Sri Lanka squad for second Test

  • Mahela Jayawardene (capt), Angelo Mathews (vc), Tillakaratne Dilshan, Tharanga Parnavithana, Kumar Sangakkara, Thilan Samaraweera, Dinesh Chandimal, Prasanna Jayawardene (wk), Dilhara Fernando, Suraj Randiv, Rangana Herath, Nuwan Kulasekara, Nuwan Pradeep, Thisara Perera, Jeevan Mendis

Sri Lanka have recalled fast bowler Dilhara Fernando to the squad for the second Test against Pakistan, which begins at the SSC on June 30, as a replacement for the injured Chanaka Welegedara. The selectors were short of options, with several back-up seamers nursing injuries.

Fernando's last Test appearance was the Boxing Day match against South Africa in Durban in 2011. His inclusion is the only change to the Sri Lanka squad that won the first Test in Galle by 209 runs.

"Fernando has recovered from a shoulder injury and we have included him in the 15, but I am not sure whether he will play," chairman of selectors Ashantha de Mel said. "The team management will take a call on who should support Nuwan Kulasekara.

"Nuwan Pradeep bowled impressively but he has a history of injuries so I don't know whether he will play back-to-back matches. If Pradeep is rested his place is likely to go to either Thisara Perera or Fernando."

De Mel said the two other bowlers who would have been in contention, Suranga Lakmal and Shaminda Eranga, were both nursing injuries.

"Lakmal has a serious ankle injury and he is out for at least six months, and Eranga is having a nerve problem in his back," De Mel said. "We have sent Dhammika Prasad to South Africa with the Sri Lanka A team to gain fitness and to bowl many overs in the four-day unofficial Test matches. These bowlers cannot play an entire Test series without breaking down or getting injured."

When Dilhara Came to SL ..Team Will Be Pakistan 12, Srilanka 11

i will be good to have dilhara in the team. He adds a good contrast and will beat the PAK batsmen all five days. Also with Rangana Herath in the tean we have a good batting line up. Herath has really proved him self now and is ranked 4th in the test bowler ranking. He will be the next great spin bowler of the world.

Give this guy a chance. You need a bowler who can play some chin music to the opposition batsmen. Malinga can but he is not available. This guy has a good slower ball and the bouncer. Please give him some encouragement. Good luck Dilhara.

Why wasn't Thissara Perera in the squad? Is it a bad to have two all rounders in the team? Along with the specialized batsman and bowlers, the more all rounders a team has the better it would be. SL needs to break out of thinking 'old style' if they are to be a team to be reckon with.

Actually Sri Lanka have umpires in their squad, so they have nothing to worry :-)

its sad to see some pathetic comments by some about Dilhara Fernando, easily the best fast bowler in the squad. He literally won us that test against SA with his fierce fast bowling. Give this guy some support, I am sure he will trouble any attack any time. Military medium pace bowling of Kula may become handy occasionally but will be milked MANY TIMES, esp. outside of sub continent. Dilhara is some one who give 100% and work hard to achieve the best for the team. Other than Malinga or Welegedera I dont see any fast bowler better than him, yet. Best now-ball bowler, Ohh sajhera when did you last watch a ball game, 10 yrs ago ?
