ICC Cricket World Cup, 1st Match, Group B: Bangladesh v India at Dhaka, Feb 19, 2011
ICC Cricket World Cup - 1st match, Group B
India won by 87 runs
19 February 2011 - day/night match (50-over match)

14.25: The teams are lining up for their national anthems. India are first. And there's a reasonable cheer when it finishes. It pales, absolutely pales, in comparison to the noise at the Shere Bangla after the Bangladesh anthem.

Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag punch gloves as they stride to the middle. Shafiul Islam will bowl the first ball of the World Cup. Sehwag will take strike.

14.20 The bowlers who will be under the pump first up will be the Bangladesh quicks, Shafiul Islam and Rubel Hossain. This will be the first World Cup that Bangladesh have plenty of expectations on them. Can they handle the pressure of a fervent home support? They have a very young squad, the youngest in the World Cup, and the grand old man in the side is Abdur Razzak, who is all of 28 years old.

Here's another stat: "There have been five scores over 250 that have been successfully chased in day-night games in Mirpur. The highest ever target chased is 297 by India against Bangladesh in the tri-nation tournament in 2010."

Hope you have got your Fantasy teams in place. Some great prizes on offer. It's over here.

To all smart phone users, we have our Andriod and iPhone apps over here.

14.10 A good move by Bangladesh choosing to bowl? Especially given what a strong batting line-up India have?

Madhu, one of our stats chaps, will be providing us factoids through the game. Here's his first one: "Of 42 matches played in Mirpur, 27 have been won by the team batting second and only 15 by the team bating first. In day-night games, only three out of 16 matches have been won by teams batting first."

We have also introduced an over-by-over feature, which will focus more on fans discussions. That's being manned by Nitin Sundar as of now. Head there to join in the conversation. Nitin and me, Siddarth Ravindran, will be alternating between the ball-by-ball and the over-by-over through the game.

14.00 Toss Ravi Shastri is his typically loud self, welcoming the captains. Shakib spins the coin, 'heads' is the call, 'tails' it is. Bangladesh choose to bowl.

Shakib says the boys are confident ahead of the big match, he says he'll be happy to chase anything below 260. Mohammad Ashraful left out.

Dhoni says he'd have like to bowl first as well, since dew could be a big factor. He's says preparation has been good, though the team has had to travel a bit in the past few days. He says "Ashwin, Chawla, Raina and one other guy won't play". That other guy is Ashish Nehra, who is presumably left out due to a sore back.

See above for the XIs of both the teams.

Sidharth Monga, one of our chaps at the ground, says the stands aren't full yet due to tedious security checking.

13.55 We saw during the opening ceremony how passionately the people of Bangladesh have embraced this World Cup. The excitement levels are a touch lower than that in India, but not if you see the newspaper headlines. Most of them have front-page banner headlines such as: "Team India seek revenge for 2007 debacle", "Tonight: vengeance", and "Time to put Caribbean nightmare behind".

Big cheer from the crowd as the captains make their way for the toss.

13.45 Fifteen minutes to go for the start. There's plenty of stuff on ESPNcricinfo to keep you occupied. Here's George Binoy's preview for the game.

In his pitch report, Sunil Gavaskar says that the team batting second may have some trouble since the track is slow, and it could keep low. He also says there's plenty of runs in the pitch as well, history suggests teams winning the toss will choose to bowl first on this venue - the last 12 day-night matches have been won by the team batting second.

Have you heard of Mike Horn, the extreme adventurer who has inspired team India? Nagraj Gollapudi has all you need to know about him here.

13.30 The World Cup is upon us. And it kicks off with a tussle in Mirpur between two co-hosts - a much-improved Bangladesh and one of the favourites India.

We're still have half an hour to go for the toss, but the stands are already filling up in Mirpur. Bangladesh have already given the World Cup a stirring opening ceremony, can they provide the tournament more buzz with an upset?

There can't be any discussion of a World Cup match between Bangladesh and India without talking about this game which Bangla fans will recall fondly. Asked about that game and whether it will play on the minds of the Indian team, MS Dhoni was typically guarded, talking about a 'fresh start' and 'focussing on the future'. Virender Sehwag, on the other hand , was typically forthright, saying that India have a good record against Bangladesh, and that they have lost only one or two games against Bangladesh.

17.2

17.3

Shakib Al Hasan to Gambhir, no run, another good bit of fielding as Gambhir thinks of taking a single down to long off, the fielder at extra cover ran across, dived away and stopped it. Good stuff

18.2

Naeem Islam to Sehwag, 1 run, aha, Sehwag plays the forehand crosscourt, but he thinks he is playing on grass. This pitch, however, is Roland Garros. It stops and scoots along slowly and he nearly pats it straight to midwicket. Just gets it over the fielder's head

19.1

Shakib Al Hasan to Gambhir, FOUR, whoa, what's the deal with the outfield? Gambhir skips out, gets to the pitch and deftly lofts over midwicket. Mahmudullah had a chance to save that on the ropes, but lost his bearings on some loose soil and skated over the ropes along with the ball

Shakib Al Hasan to Gambhir, 1 run, Gambhir works it square for another single

21.6

Shakib Al Hasan to Sehwag, 2 runs, short and slipping down the leg - not the best delivery to bowl at this stage to Sehwag. He goes for a pull and gets it very fine for a couple.

Naeem Islam to Gambhir, FOUR, dexterity, thy name Gambhir. Short yes, wide yes, turning away yes. Still, there were two men for the cut standing square. How Gambhir found the gap with his cut, only he knows.

22.6

Naeem Islam to Sehwag, 1 run, short and a touch outside off, Sehwag rocks back and cuts behind square for one

This by the way, is Sehwag's highest score against Bangladesh. Ominous. Jitin identifies some pattern for us. "Sachin was out at 69 in 10.5 overs. and sehwag and gambhir scored next 69 at same pace in next 10.5 overs (ind 138 in 21.4 overs)"

Mahmudullah comes on, off spin round the wicket

23.1

Mahmudullah to Sehwag, 1 run, flighted outside off, Sehwag gets forward and across and creams a single through cover

23.2

Mahmudullah to Gambhir, OUT, soft dismissal, softer than a baby's bottom as they say! Gambhir gets a non-descript ball that lands back of a length on leg and middle, and straightens a touch. He looks to work it to the leg side, but was just a little loose in the execution. The ball sneaked through between bat and pad, to disturb the stumps. Mirpur finds its voice again. Interesting dismissal, it seemed to stay lower than Gambhir thought. In hidsight, he should have been on the front foot.

G Gambhir b Mahmudullah 39 (49m 39b 3x4 0x6) SR: 100.00

24.3

Abdur Razzak to Sehwag, 2 runs, short ball again, Sehwag stays back and looks to larrup over midwicket, but it stayed low and he had to adjust. Didn't overhit it, and focused on finding the gap at deep midwicket. Nifty footwork from Rubel running across from square leg saves the four

24.4

Abdur Razzak to Sehwag, no run, this one skids along, Sehwag looks to stay back and force it from the crease, and it nearly sneaked in, but his bat came down in time

26.4

Shafiul Islam to Sehwag, no run, the first yorker of World Cup 2011, and a very good one. Shafiul puts Sehwag's toes in danger, though not at great pace, and he does well to dig it out to the off side. He was taken by surprise there.

26.5

Shafiul Islam to Sehwag, 1 run, another yorker attempted, this one ends up as a low full toss on the pads and Sehwag flicks it smoothly to deep square leg, where there is cover

26.6

Shafiul Islam to Kohli, no run, aha, Kohli nearly played on. Good short ball, came on so slowly that Kohli was through with the bull an instant too early. Ended up bottom-edging it close to leg stump.

28.2

Shafiul Islam to Kohli, FOUR, twice in two balls, Kohli is in trouble against Shafiul. This time, it is the lack of bounce that nearly does him in as he looks to force through the off side without getting across. Inside edge, almost onto the stumps, but ends up at fine leg

28.3

Shafiul Islam to Kohli, 1 run, close miss for Sehwag. Kohli times the straight drive perfectly, but Shafiul gets his hand on it and nearly guides it back onto the stumps. Sehwag was not even trying to get back, he was a couple of feet outside his crease.

32.3

Naeem Islam to Sehwag, 1 run, whoa, what was that? Sehwag goes back and looks to chip-loft over long on. You thought there was a gap there, but there wasn't. He did well not to time it, else he'd have holed out.

Stat bit from Madhu: "Sehwag, wih his second century in World Cups becomes the third Indian and 13th batsman overall to score ten centuries or more in away/neutral ODIs. Indian batsmen have scored the most centuries in ODIs (183), followed by Australia (156)."

Whoah, that was not what the huge crowd in Mirpur expected. Sehwag had talked of this being a 'revenge' match for the 2007 debacle, and he delivered in style. He blasted 175, his highest individual score, to power the Indian innings. There can be no complaints about India's batting , each player doing his bit, as Bangladesh's slightly one-dimensional attack could do nothing to stop the onslaught.

Virat Kohli says he was very nervous as he went out to bat, but decided to take his time to play himself in and not play a silly shot early. It worked like a charm for him, getting his fifth ODI century.

Some stats from the hit-athon. India's 370 is the highest team total in a World Cup opener, going past England's 334 in the 1975 World Cup. 2. Virender Sehwag's 175 is the highest individual score in the opening game of the World Cup, going past Glenn Turner's 171 in the first World Cup.

3. Sehwag's 175 is the highest score by an Indian batsman against Bangladesh and also the highest score in an ODI in Bangladesh.

4. The 203-run stand between Sehwag and Kohli is the fifth 200-plus partnership for India in World Cups. Sehwag has been involved in two of them
