ICC Cricket World Cup - 2nd match, Group A

Kenya v New Zealand

New Zealand won by 10 wickets (with 252 balls remaining)

We are set for the second game of World Cup 2011. Alex Obanda to take strike to Tim Southee. Seren Waters strikes an, er, serene pose at the non-striker's end.

And while you are at it, you might also try out your prediction skills here. Let us know who do you think might make the knockouts.

Know what, you could also pick the winner of this match and move up the ladder in the Bracket Predictor.

9.15 am Robin Jackman doing the pitch report on ESPN says that the pitch is going to help the spinners. The seamers might want to look elsewhere, there is not one blade of grass on the surface.

9.10 am Brendon McCullum says on air it is exciting to finally get things going after a long build-up. Seren Waters says they will try to emulate to do what the 2003 Kenya side achieved. He says to be actually playing against players he saw on television is massive.

Liam and Firdose, in their preview, think both sides have a lot to prove. Kenya have been going downhill since the 2003 World Cup dream run, and the less said about New Zealand's recent run, the better.

9.00am The toss isn't too far away. In fact, it's right now. Daniel Vettori and Jimmy Kamande are out in the middle. Kamande calls heads, wins and opts to bat. "We've been here for a few days and are getting used to it. The heat is not going to be a problem," he says. Vettori expects the track to deteriorate over the day. There's no Kyle Mills for this match. Hamish Bennett and Tim Southee are the two frontline seamers. We'll get you the XIs in just a bit.

8.50am local time: Hello and welcome to Cricinfo's coverage of the second game of this World Cup. Kenya take on New Zealand at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The track is dry, no grass whatsoever and the experts have do doubts saying the thing to do after winning the toss is to bat.

4.1

Southee to Waters, no run, dug in short of a good length, he gets in to some sort of a tangle as he decides to work it square but is hit on the thigh pad

4.2

Southee to Waters, no run, for the first time, Southee offers a lot of width outside off stump, but he fails to capitalise, a hint of away shape, just a hint, bit of bounce too, the attempted cut remains only an attempt

Bennett to Waters, 1 run, lets a length ball come on to him outside off and steers it to third man

Boris: "I would be more inclined to say that this would be an 800m dash. It is important to pace the innings, not fall too far behind and then sprint at the death. Kenya don't want to run out of fuel too early. But they cannot progress at 3-3.5 an over for too long."

Oram to Patel, 1 run, steered down to third man

21.2

Oram to Odoyo, no run, looks to play something more than a defensive shot to a length delivery, but there was room only to do that, and so he does that, block it down the track, that is

21.3

Oram to Odoyo, OUT, another one stops on the batsman, there have been a few of those, but the problem for Odoyo was, it also produced the Oram extra bounce, Odoyo was taken by surprise and ungainly fended it in the air for Jesse to take the dolliest of dollies at point, dear me, Kenya have gone nowhere in this innings

TM Odoyo c Ryder b Oram 2 (6m 6b 0x4 0x6) SR: 33.33

21.4

Oram to Odhiambo, no run, defended off the back foot towards extra cover

21.5

Oram to Odhiambo, no run, fuller this time, he cannot beat extra cover with a firm push

21.6

Oram to Odhiambo, 4 byes, what a delivery, beats everyone from a very full length, batsman, who flails at it, stumps that stand still, and keeper who makes a vain effort to stop the byes

End of over 22 (5 runs) Kenya 67/7 (RR: 3.04)
NN Odhiambo    0* (3b)      JDP Oram    2-1-1-2
RR Patel    14* (20b 1x4)      DL Vettori    6-1-16-0

Southee is back

22.1

Southee to Patel, no run, tucks him up with a back of a length ball, he defends it off the back foot

22.2

Southee to Patel, 1 run, fuller delivery on the pads, flicked away to fine leg

22.3

Southee to Odhiambo, no run, Southee gets ambitious with the leg before appeal, the batsman was struck high on the pads, but it was slipping down leg

22.4

Southee to Odhiambo, no run, goes for an extravagant drive to a full delivery, but gets an inside edge on to pad and the ball rolls away towards point, there have been so many of them today, inside edges, and wickets too

22.5

Southee to Odhiambo, OUT, and another one goes, nothing shot really, swinging wildly to a full delivery that was of the you-miss-I-hit types, well Odhiambo missed, and the ball uprooted off stump, ho hum

NN Odhiambo b Southee 0 (6m 6b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

22.6

Southee to Ngoche, OUT, two in two for Tim, pinpoint yorker on the stumps, and before the bat could come down, the ball had crashed on to boot, not much to decide for the umpire, Southee is on a hat trick with one wicket to go

SO Ngoche lbw b Southee 0 (1m 1b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

End of over 23 (1 run) Kenya 68/9 (RR: 2.95)
     TG Southee    6-0-13-3
RR Patel    15* (22b 1x4)      JDP Oram    2-1-1-2

23.1

Oram to Patel, 1 run, pitched up close to the batsman, who gets forward and drives in the air, but wide of extra cover

Daniel: "I think it's time for the batting power play"

23.2

Oram to Otieno, no run, solidly behind the line of this length delivery around off stump

23.3

Oram to Otieno, no run, full toss outside off stump, but he cannot beat Nathan at mid off with the drive

23.4

Oram to Otieno, no run, swinging in a touch and landing almost on a yorker length close to off stump, dug out to point

23.5

Oram to Otieno, OUT, oops, there will be no hat trick for Southee, another one stopped on the batsman, he was already well forward and pushing hard at it, and the ball flew to one of the two men at short midwicket, it's all over for Kenya, nice gesture from the big man Oram, grins sheepishly and gestures apologetically in the direction of Southee, who has an even broader smile on his face

E Otieno c Styris b Oram 0 (4m 4b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

Peter with this gem: "Finally New Zealand get a target they might actually chase." How cruel

Dillon: "NZ should send Bennett and Southee out to bat, should be a walk in the park."

With eight batsman not getting past 6, this has been a sorry outing from Kenya, one they would like to quickly forget. This is the fifth-lowest total at a World Cup, and Kenya's lowest.

New Zealand will have boosted their confidence, as Dan Vettori wanted them to before the start of this game. On a pitch expected to favor spin, Kenya had no answers to the fury of Bennett, the wiles of Southee, and the bounce of Oram. Should be a comfortable little chase for New Zealand. Don't go away.
