ICC Cricket World Cup, 5th Match, Group B: England v Netherlands at Nagpur, Feb 22, 2011
ICC Cricket World Cup - 5th match, Group B
England won by 6 wickets (with 8 balls remaining)
22 February 2011 - day/night match (50-over match)

Well, well, well, well, well ... we have a match, and some! Just as England did the decent thing in 2009 and played a stinker on the opening night of the World Twenty20, they have turned the 2011 World Cup into a truly global event by bowling out of their prams against the minnows of the Netherlands. Ryan ten Doeschate is currently trending worldwide on Twitter, which I am assured is a significant feat in this Justin Bieber-powered era.

Anyhow, the job is only half done for the Dutch. They now have to defend 293, under the lights and with dew bound to be a factor of sorts. Nevertheless, they don't have many bowlers who will be putting pace on the ball in these conditions. England have it all to do, and then some ... here's Mudassar Bukhari

0.1

Mudassar Bukhari to Strauss, no run, outside off, a touch of swing, and Strauss flashes outside off

0.2

Mudassar Bukhari to Strauss, FOUR, on the pads, you can't bowl there with fine leg up ...

0.3

Mudassar Bukhari to Strauss, FOUR, zoinks ... two in two for Strauss, but that could have been played on ... an under-edged cut bounces past off stump!

0.4

Mudassar Bukhari to Strauss, no run, good delivery, full length, a touch of movement, beats the edge

0.5

Mudassar Bukhari to Strauss, no run, aggressive drive from Strauss, but sharp fielding at point cuts off the run

0.6

Mudassar Bukhari to Strauss, FOUR, wrong line from Bukhari, Strauss taps another boundary wide of short fine leg, and he's up and running

Twelve off the over ... England only have a mountain left to climb. Here's KP... what a test for him in his new role. Tendo took 12 balls to get off the mark, will he have or need similar patience? One slip in place

End of over 1 (12 runs) England 12/0 (281 runs required from 49 overs, RR: 12.00, RRR: 5.73)

    • AJ Strauss 12 (6b 3x4)
    • KP Pietersen 0 (0b)
    • Mudassar Bukhari 1-0-12-0
1.1

Westdijk to Pietersen, FOUR, no, he will not need such patience! A calm strike through the covers, and that's a maiden four as an international opener

1.2

Westdijk to Pietersen, no run, full again, and driven to short cover

1.3

Westdijk to Pietersen, no run, outside off stump and a bit of a loose flash at that one. Gets away with it

1.4

Westdijk to Pietersen, no run, big stride forward and defended back down the track

1.5

Westdijk to Pietersen, no run, outside off once again, not a lot of carry in that delivery. Left alone

1.6

Westdijk to Pietersen, 1 run, drilled into the covers for another single

As if we haven't already got enough excitement going on here, here's some exciting news for any Dutch fans trying to see the action. We are streaming this match on ESPN Player, throughout Europe (excluding UK, I'm afraid) and errr... Japan. So there you go, get clicking

    • KP Pietersen 5 (6b 1x4)
    • AJ Strauss 12 (6b 3x4)
    • BA Westdijk 1-0-5-0
    • Mudassar Bukhari 1-0-12-0

2.2

Mudassar Bukhari to Strauss, 1 run, Strauss returns the strike

2.3

Mudassar Bukhari to Pietersen, no run, firm drive, but good line and length from Bukhari. Pietersen has to go straight, and hits the bowler in his followthrough

2.4

Mudassar Bukhari to Pietersen, 2 runs, misdirected, and flicked firmly off the pads to deep midwicket

2.5

Mudassar Bukhari to Pietersen, 1 run, clipped in front of square, good firm strokeplay from Pietersen, getting onto the front foot at every opportunity

2.6

Mudassar Bukhari to Strauss, no run, Strauss stays in his crease to work off the hip, but straight to square leg

End of over 3 (5 runs) England 22/0 (271 runs required from 47 overs, RR: 7.33, RRR: 5.76)

    • AJ Strauss 13 (8b 3x4)
    • KP Pietersen 9 (10b 1x4)
    • Mudassar Bukhari 2-0-17-0
    • BA Westdijk 1-0-5-0
3.1

Westdijk to Pietersen, no run, another well-struck flick, but midwicket intercepts

3.2

Westdijk to Pietersen, FOUR, now that's the way to do it, onto the front foot, and a presumptuous steer in front of square on the leg side. Almost a flamingo flick, but the back leg didn't quite kick up as it used to. Oh well, still four

3.3

Westdijk to Pietersen, 2 runs, drilled! That was four all the way, but it deflected off middle stump and away to mid-on

3.4

Westdijk to Pietersen, no run, pushed to midwicket

3.5

Westdijk to Pietersen, no run, cracked into the covers, he is timing it well today. But straight at the fielder this time

3.6

Westdijk to Pietersen, FOUR, too much width, Pietersen waited a split-second, then caressed a wristy cut in front of point.

Time for the spinner, squawks Gnasher. He's got a point you know ...

End of over 4 (10 runs) England 32/0 (261 runs required from 46 overs, RR: 8.00, RRR: 5.67)

    • KP Pietersen 19 (16b 3x4)
    • AJ Strauss 13 (8b 3x4)
    • BA Westdijk 2-0-15-0
    • Mudassar Bukhari 2-0-17-0
4.1

Mudassar Bukhari to Strauss, no run, Strauss goes up onto his toes to cut, but can't time the stroke as cover intercepts

4.2

Mudassar Bukhari to Strauss, 1 run, another cut, again not timed, but a fumble ensures a single

4.3

Mudassar Bukhari to Pietersen, no run, another firm flick. Midwicket is in place once again

4.4

Mudassar Bukhari to Pietersen, no run, slightly back of a length, though Pietersen is still on the front foot. Mistimed drive rolls out to mid-on

4.5

Mudassar Bukhari to Pietersen, no run, down the track, he's feeling the power now. Good work at midwicket saves the run

4.6

Mudassar Bukhari to Pietersen, 1 run, nearly scuds one through KP's defences, but he jams the bat down late to work a single through square leg

End of over 5 (2 runs) England 34/0 (259 runs required from 45 overs, RR: 6.80, RRR: 5.75)

    • KP Pietersen 20 (20b 3x4)

Westdijk to Pietersen, no run

5.2

Westdijk to Pietersen, no run, worked to midwicket once again

5.3

Westdijk to Pietersen, no run, the keeper is up to the stumps now - a good move - as KP stands up in his crease to push out to cover

5.4

Westdijk to Pietersen, FOUR, dragged down, and Pietersen is onto it in a flash. Yet again on the front foot, and brutalised through midwicket

5.5

Westdijk to Pietersen, no run, driven hard back to the bowler

5.6

Westdijk to Pietersen, no run, blocked on the front foot. An authoritative defensive shot, as it happens

England have taken the molehill out of their mountainous target. But still a long way to go

End of over 6 (4 runs) England 38/0 (255 runs required from 44 overs, RR: 6.33, RRR: 5.79)

    • KP Pietersen 24 (26b 4x4)
    • AJ Strauss 14 (10b 3x4)
    • BA Westdijk 3-0-19-0

6.3

Mudassar Bukhari to Pietersen, no run, worked off the pads again

6.4

Mudassar Bukhari to Pietersen, no run, driven hard, back to the bowler. KP is hitting the field a lot in his innings so far...

6.5

Mudassar Bukhari to Pietersen, 1 run, red-bull run! The fielder was back on the edge of the circle, so Pietersen sprinted an instant single to mid-off. Made it in time

6.6

Mudassar Bukhari to Strauss, FOUR, bosh. Strauss's determination to hang back in the crease pays dividends as Bukhari drops short. Well pulled through midwicket

End of over 7 (6 runs) England 44/0 (249 runs required from 43 overs, RR: 6.28, RRR: 5.79)

    • AJ Strauss 19 (13b 4x4)
    • KP Pietersen 25 (29b 4x4)
    • Mudassar Bukhari 4-0-25-0
    • BA Westdijk 3-0-19-0
7.1

Westdijk to Pietersen, no run, outside off, a hint of swing, and Pietersen lets it pass by with a quizzical raise of the bat

7.2

Westdijk to Pietersen, FOUR, woomph. That was travelling. A catchable height as Westdijk thought for a split-second about sticking out his left hand, but valued his digits more than a wicket

7.3

Westdijk to Pietersen, no run, full again, met on the front foot. Inevitably

7.4

Westdijk to Pietersen, no run, an uppish drive, a few men lurking for that shot, but he plays it well enough, into the covers

7.5

Westdijk to Pietersen, no run, driven on the up to a tumbling point. Slightly sliced stroke

7.6

Westdijk to Pietersen, no run, driven back down the track

It's all about KP at the moment, but look at those strike rates. Strauss has hardly faced, but has 19 from 13 ...

End of over 8 (4 runs) England 48/0 (245 runs required from 42 overs, RR: 6.00, RRR: 5.83)

    • KP Pietersen 29 (35b 5x4)
    • AJ Strauss 19 (13b 4x4)
    • BA Westdijk 4-0-23-0
    • Mudassar Bukhari 4-0-25-0

Right, here's the first change of bowling. Bernard Loots is in, as the Dutch stick to seam-up

8.1

Loots to Strauss, 2 runs, flicked off the toes, through midwicket

8.2

Loots to Strauss, no run, cut into the covers, again not timed especially well

8.3

Loots to Strauss, 1 run, back into the crease, tucked out to midwicket

8.4

Loots to Pietersen, no run, tossed out wide, and KP was reaching as he inside-edged past his stumps. A bit dicey ...

8.5

Loots to Pietersen, 1 run, on the pads, a regulation clip through square leg

England are almost precisely up with the required rate at the moment.

8.6

Loots to Strauss, no run, oops, they've dropped behind now

End of over 9 (4 runs) England 52/0 (241 runs required from 41 overs, RR: 5.77, RRR: 5.87)

11.6

Westdijk to Strauss, FOUR, same line, same shot, same result...another freebie boundary for Strauss who has looked in fine touch. Turns his wrists and sends it racing to deep square

End of over 12 (9 runs) England 72/0 (221 runs required from 38 overs, RR: 6.00, RRR: 5.81)

Ah! This is exciting. Jonathan Trott and Ian Bell in the Batting Powerplay. Muscular smiters of the ball that they are. Ryan ten Doeschate, officially the best ODI cricketer in the world, has the ball.

40.1

ten Doeschate to Bell, 1 run, very wide delivery to start, a long way outside off, Bell stretched and stretched to just about toe-end this, fetching it to mid-on. Cricket at it's finest there

40.2

ten Doeschate to Trott, 1 wide, OUT, wow! That is an absolute stunner from Barresi! So sharp! Trott aimed to flick a delivery that was sliding down the leg side, overbalanced and before he could even think about what had happened, Barresi had the bails off. It was a wide too, remarkable stuff

England not quite got control of this game yet, Netherlands just need a couple of good overs. Bukhari is the bowler.

41.1

Mudassar Bukhari to Collingwood, no run, ooh, how has this got through? Yorker finds a bottom edge, goes through the legs and past the stumps, past the keeper too

41.2

Mudassar Bukhari to Collingwood, 2 runs, shovelled into the leg side for a couple, neatly done

41.3

Mudassar Bukhari to Collingwood, no run, full and on the pads, Collingwood just needed to pierce the infield but picked out a diving short midwicket

41.4

Mudassar Bukhari to Collingwood, 1 leg bye, with all the fielders on the off side this kind of deliver - short and down the leg side - is criminal. Luckily for Bukhari, Collingwood couldn't get hold of a pull and it scraps away down the leg side

41.5

Mudassar Bukhari to Bell, FOUR, poor ball, short, wide, sitting up and asking for trouble. Bell, the menacing beast, is trouble and creamed it to the point boundary

41.6

Mudassar Bukhari to Bell, 1 run, much better delivery but the damage is done. Full, straight and patted down the ground

42.2

ten Doeschate to Collingwood, 1 run, good delivery, aimed full and at the stumps, Collingwood squeezes it to midwicket

42.3

ten Doeschate to Bell, no run, Bell gives himself room to unfurl a back-foot drive, well timed, but straight to cover

43.1

Mudassar Bukhari to Collingwood, no run, shortish delivery that Collingwood aims a heave at, his form is still some way from vintage and it dribbles off an inside edge

43.2

Mudassar Bukhari to Collingwood, FOUR, wrong line from Bukhari and precious runs for England. Full and sliding down leg, Collingwood only needs his favourite inside edge and it speeds away to the rope

43.3

43.4

Loots is back, can he pull off a Netherlands heist? Guffaw. Sorry.

44.1

Loots to Bopara, no run, flurry of arms and legs in delivery it ends up slowish and straight and Bopara defends

44.2

Loots to Bopara, 1 run, Bopara drives straight to cover and hares off for a tight single

44.3

Loots to Collingwood, no run, slower ball, gosh this really was slow. Well executed legcutter and Collingwood was through his stoke a few times before the ball arrived

44.4

Loots to Collingwood, FOUR, that will do nicely! Another slower ball but this time Collingwood read it and swatted that rearrest of beasts - an offside Collingwood boundary, over mid-off

44.5

Loots to Collingwood, 1 run, back to single mode, pushed into space

44.6

Loots to Bopara, 1 run, Bopara keeps the strike by languidly driving this down to mid-on

End of over 45 (7 runs) England 256/4 (37 runs required from 30 balls, RR: 5.68, RRR: 7.40)

    • RS Bopara 3 (5b)
    • PD Collingwood 18 (16b 2x4)
    • BP Loots 8-0-48-0
    • Mudassar Bukhari 9-0-54-1

The Powerplay is up. Not sure if anyone, particularly the England batsmen, noticed they had taken it. They managed 34 runs for 2 wickets in it.

45.1

Seelaar to Bopara, no run, Bopara aims a back-cut, plays it firmly but straight to the short third man

45.2

Seelaar to Bopara, 1 run, this time it's fuller and pushed down the ground easily

45.3

Seelaar to Collingwood, 1 run, Collingwood down the wicket, aims a horrible heave and it's that staple of Collingwood knocks - the inside edge - that saves him as it skims this far past leg stump

45.4

Seelaar to Bopara, no run, blocked by Bopara to mid-on, pressure building

45.5

Seelaar to Bopara, 1 run, this time Bopara gets a single, down the wicket and patting to long-on

45.6

Seelaar to Collingwood, 1 run, Collingwood keeps the strike by bunting this out to deep square

End of over 46 (4 runs) England 260/4 (33 runs required from 24 balls, RR: 5.65, RRR: 8.25)

    • PD Collingwood 20 (18b 2x4)
    • RS Bopara 5 (9b)
    • PM Seelaar 9-0-44-1
    • BP Loots 8-0-48-0
46.1

Loots to Collingwood, FOUR, ah, that's the Collingwood England love. Nerveless, down on one knee and dinking a paddle sweep past short fine leg for four

46.2

Loots to Collingwood, 1 run, aims another one, but this was a long way outside off stump so he didn't have the angle on his side. In the end it bobbles off the knee into the off side

46.3

Loots to Bopara, 2 runs, Bopara walks down the ground and gets an inside edge that runs into the long-on region, Bopara was back for a second but needed a full-length dive to get back into his ground

46.4

Loots to Bopara, 1 run, Bopara is eyeing up the leg side and aims a wristy chip that sails down towards long-on, looked horrid half-way but bounced short of the man

46.5

Loots to Collingwood, 1 run, full and on the pads, rare good timing means Collingwood can only have a single here as it speeds out to long-on

46.6

Loots to Bopara, 1 run, ooh, hint of leading edge as Bopara tries to work to leg. Ends up heading down to long-off and Bopara jogs through to keep the strike

End of over 47 (10 runs) England 270/4 (23 runs required from 18 balls, RR: 5.74, RRR: 7.66)

    • RS Bopara 9 (12b)
    • PD Collingwood 26 (21b 3x4)
    • BP Loots 9-0-58-0
    • PM Seelaar 9-0-44-1

Seelaar to bowl his last over, he's bowled beautifully tonight.

47.1

Seelaar to Bopara, 1 run, boot saves four here! Bopara nailed a straight drive and Seelaar shoved out a left foot to save the boundary

47.2

Seelaar to Collingwood, 3 runs, excellent work from Collingwood, stands tall to sort of reverse-tap this, took it from well outside leg and almost sent it down to the third man rope, really well timed

47.3

Seelaar to Bopara, 1 wide, top bowling from Seelaar here. Bopara running down the wicket and it was fired flat and down the leg side, would have been a stunning take but technically a missed stumping I suppose

47.3

Seelaar to Bopara, 1 run, another leading edge, squirts out to the off side

47.4

Seelaar to Collingwood, 1 run, Collingwood running down the wicket this time and managing to shove this to long-on

47.5

Seelaar to Bopara, 2 runs, Bopara again happy to wander down at Seelaar, who shoves through a quicker ball and with soft hands Bopara dabs a couple wide of long-on

47.6

Seelaar to Bopara, 1 run, this time Bopara stays in his crease and nudges a single into the midwicket region. England almost there now

End of over 48 (10 runs) England 280/4 (13 runs required from 12 balls, RR: 5.83, RRR: 6.50)

    • RS Bopara 14 (16b)
    • PD Collingwood 30 (23b 3x4)
    • PM Seelaar 10-0-54-1
    • BP Loots 9-0-58-0
48.1

Loots to Bopara, SIX, Bopara has seen enough! Gets a fullish delivery and backs himself to beat the long-off fielder. Aims a fluid drive and nails it, sails flat over the man and over the ropes

That's all but settled it now.

48.2

Loots to Bopara, 2 runs, good delivery - full and straight - Bopara bunts it down the ground, scampers a couple to take England within one shot of the match. In comes the field...

48.3

Loots to Bopara, FOUR, Bopara finishing it in a rush. Running at the bowler and smacking a waist-high full toss to the midwicket boundary. Scores level now

48.4

Loots to Bopara, FOUR, that's it. Bopara finishes it in style, hoiking this to the midwicket rope to take England home with eight balls to spare. Netherlands were fantastic with the bat and Borren and ten Doeschate sink to their knees now, at the half-way stage they would have been dreaming of glory

England win by six wickets. England's World Cup campaign is up and wheezing. They were disgraceful in the field, unspectacular with the bat but have got home fairly securely. There was one outstanding performance today and it came from Ryan ten Doeschate, who was stunning with his 110-ball 119. He followed it up with 2 for 47 from 10 overs on a flat pitch to prove what a high-class performer he is. Andrew Miller has more in his bulletin which will be ready shortly and you can entertain yourselves until then with our Facebook page. This has been a good day for me, I have ten Doeschate and Trott in my fantasy team. If you haven't joined yet, get involved.

"We got a lot of things wrong with our bowling and fielding," says Strauss. That's an understatement. "Very good wicket, we knew if we kept wickets in hand we'd have a good chance. We have to improve as the tournament goes on."

Unsurprisingly, ten Doeschate is named man of the match. "It was pretty special for me. I told my team-mates we're put out a really good performance here on the biggest stage. There wasn't too much planning but we assessed as we went along. I haven't set personal goals for the World Cup but I want us to carry on playing great cricket."

That's all from me, Sahil Dutta and the Andrews, McGlashan and Miller. Next game is Kenya and Pakistan tomorrow at 9.00GMT.
