ICC Cricket World Cup - 10th match, Group A

Sri Lanka v Pakistan

Pakistan won by 11 runs

Dilshan and Tharanga walk out. Shoaib has the new ball. Two slips in place.

Akif: "It's either the batters or the bowlers who let pakistan down, usually. Today teh batters did their bit, a bit, let's see what how teh bowlers do. This has turned out to be a bowler's game throughout."

Welcome back for the chase. Premadasa under lights. Has been a daunting proposition for the batsmen, mostly. Sri Lanka have a very good top order, but the lower middle order is a worry. Pakistan have around seven good bowlers at their disposal. Should be fun. Abhishek's moved over to the chat moderation, while I will begin commentary for this innings.

0.1

Shoaib Akhtar to Tharanga, no run, back of a length on middle at 143 kph. Shoaib is chugging away already. Tharanga hangs back and defends from the crease as it angles across

0.2

Shoaib Akhtar to Tharanga, 1 run, width outside off this time, Tharanga opens the face and steers it away to third man

0.3

Shoaib Akhtar to Dilshan, no run, 141 kph, back of a length outside off and Dilshan has a wild monster swing at it, without moving anything. That came in off the seam. Dilshan practices the textbook cover drive after missing. What a guy!

0.4

Shoaib Akhtar to Dilshan, 1 leg bye, on his pads, Dilshan can't get bat on the flick and it runs off the pads towards square leg for a leg bye

0.5

Shoaib Akhtar to Tharanga, no run, beaten by pace and movement. 141 kph as it angles across Tharanga who feels for it with feet rooted. Missed the ball by a mile.

0.6

Shoaib Akhtar to Tharanga, no run, and he mistimes a drive to the leg side off the last ball. Nice bustling over from Shoaib, ends with one more angling across, back of a length and he gets an inside edge towards midwicket

Sameer: "India wants to win d World Cup for Sachin,Srilanka for Murali,New Zealand for Vettori, Australia for the loss of Ashes (also for Warne, he was recently dumped by Liz Hurley),South Africa for SA, but they will definitely choke!!,England for South Africa (if you know wht I mean, if you dont then u r not a cricket fan, so whtver),Pakistan for Ijaz Butt(everyone will be banned if they dont win), West Indies...no idea!!"

haha!

End of over 1 (2 runs) Sri Lanka 2/0 (276 runs required from 49 overs, RR: 2.00, RRR: 5.63)
WU Tharanga    1* (4b)      Shoaib Akhtar    1-0-1-0
TM Dilshan    0* (2b)

Razzaq runs in with one slip.

1.1

Abdul Razzaq to Dilshan, no run, back of a length outside off, Dilshan defends from the crease, calmly down the track

1.2

Abdul Razzaq to Dilshan, no run, 128 kph, length ball on middle and leg, Dilshan wants more pace on the ball as he looks for a huge on-drive. Played onto the toe.

1.3

Abdul Razzaq to Dilshan, no run, keeps it back of a length again, Dilshan on-drives with more control to mid on

1.4

Abdul Razzaq to Dilshan, no run, short ball, Razzaq's pack of pace - high 120s - lets him off as Dilshan just can't time the pull well enough

1.5

Abdul Razzaq to Dilshan, no run, shade of away nip from outside off, Dilshan's feet aren't moving yet as he pokes at it and gets it to point

1.6

Abdul Razzaq to Dilshan, no run, maiden for Razzaq as Dilshan ends the over the way he began it, with a docile defensive push to the off side

End of over 2 (maiden) Sri Lanka 2/0 (276 runs required from 48 overs, RR: 1.00, RRR: 5.75)
TM Dilshan    0* (8b)      Abdul Razzaq    1-1-0-0
WU Tharanga    1* (4b)      Shoaib Akhtar    1-0-1-0

Vicky: "@sameer you left out bangladesh, ireland, zimbabwe etc mate.. they would probly like to win to remain in the next world cup"

2.1

Shoaib Akhtar to Tharanga, FOUR, pace, pure pace. That clocked at 141 kph, but I am sure it came off the track at much greater speed. Short ball, hustles Tharanga onto the back foot where he dangles the bat, horizontal and in hope as the ball whizzes by, it cracks the outside edge, flies high and nearly carries over third man.

2.2

Shoaib Akhtar to Tharanga, no run, more assurance from Tharanga, leans into a check drive into the covers as Shoaib lands it fuller

2.3

Shoaib Akhtar to Tharanga, 1 run, Tharanga controls the steer this time, Shoaib again drops short, he rides the bounce and angles it backward of point for one

2.4

Shoaib Akhtar to Dilshan, no run, Dilshan's not finding this easy yet. Shoaib angles into middle and leg, he looks to whip-hoick behind square but can't make connection

2.5

Shoaib Akhtar to Dilshan, 1 run, whoa, Dilshan smashes a cover drive with great vengeance and furious anger (As Samuel Jackson says, in Pulp Fiction), and it bursts through Afridi. They take a single and Afridi is wringing his hands in pain after returning the throw

2.6

Shoaib Akhtar to Tharanga, no run, length ball on off stump, Tharanga gets into a nice position as he eases the cover drive, and finds the fielder

End of over 3 (6 runs) Sri Lanka 8/0 (270 runs required from 47 overs, RR: 2.66, RRR: 5.74)
WU Tharanga    6* (8b 1x4)      Shoaib Akhtar    2-0-7-0
TM Dilshan    1* (10b)      Abdul Razzaq    1-1-0-0

3.1

Abdul Razzaq to Dilshan, no run, Dilshan beaten outside the off by a Razzaq typical legcutter that just nips away a shade from back of a length. Ambitious shot from Dilshan, no feet and just hitting on the up, and he misses

3.2

Abdul Razzaq to Dilshan, no run, Razzaq is bowling real well here, another one on the spot outside off, McGrath would approve. Dilshan just defends to the off side

3.3

Abdul Razzaq to Dilshan, 1 run, hmm, thick edge now as he looks to force the upper cut away, though Razzaq's not giving him any room. If he timed it any better, he'd have holed out to third man

3.4

Abdul Razzaq to Tharanga, FOUR, Tharanga is away with a fine shot. Back of a length again from Razzaq, probably six inches further up than he should have been. That was enough for Tharanga to move forward and drive through the line. Lovely touch.

3.5

Abdul Razzaq to Tharanga, no run, fuller this time, Tharanga probably taken by surprise by the fuller length, digs it out into the covers

3.6

Abdul Razzaq to Tharanga, no run, normal service resumes, back of a length outside off and Tharanga hangs back to steer it straight to point

End of over 4 (5 runs) Sri Lanka 13/0 (265 runs required from 46 overs, RR: 3.25, RRR: 5.76)
WU Tharanga    10* (11b 2x4)      Abdul Razzaq    2-1-5-0
TM Dilshan    2* (13b)      Shoaib Akhtar    2-0-7-0

4.1

Shoaib Akhtar to Dilshan, 1 run, Shoaib pumps it in, back of a length and targeting Dilshan's body, he calmly taps it to square leg for one

4.2

Shoaib Akhtar to Tharanga, no run, short of a length and just outside off, too close for the cut and not short enough either. Tharanga gets a bottom edge away to the slips. Good start this, from Pakistan.

4.3

Shoaib Akhtar to Tharanga, no run, slow offcutter from Shoaib - at 130 kph. Yes, I know thats faster than many fast bowlers' fastest balls, but well. Tharanga stays on the crease and drops it to the off side

4.4

Shoaib Akhtar to Tharanga, no run, fuller, and on the stumps, he drives it with the full face straight to mid off

4.5

Shoaib Akhtar to Tharanga, 1 run, another slower ball at 126 kph. Praveen Kumar, are you watching? Tharanga opens the face and dabs it to third man for a single this time

4.6

Shoaib Akhtar to Dilshan, 1 run, 145 kph, saved by Shoaib's pace! Dilshan looks to flick and gets a leading edge that balloons up over point and to third man for a single

End of over 5 (3 runs) Sri Lanka 16/0 (262 runs required from 45 overs, RR: 3.20, RRR: 5.82)
TM Dilshan    4* (15b)      Shoaib Akhtar    3-0-10-0
WU Tharanga    11* (15b 2x4)      Abdul Razzaq    2-1-5-0

5.1

Abdul Razzaq to Dilshan, no run, length ball angling into Dilshan who drives without much fluency to mid on

One catcher at leg gully, the other at short midwicket. Ok, now midwicket goes back, while short cover comes in.

5.2

Abdul Razzaq to Dilshan, FOUR, at long last, Dilshan times one of 'em on-the-up thumps through the covers. Again back of a length from Razzaq, and Dilshan goes through the line. Not much movement this time and he gets it off the middle

5.3

Abdul Razzaq to Dilshan, FOUR, edged, but there are no slips in place to take it. Dilshan releases the pressure with two fours in two balls, again stays rooted on leg stump and looks to flail at one back of a length outside off. Thick edge, flies away in a hurry.

5.4

Abdul Razzaq to Dilshan, no run, Razzaq sticks to his tight lines on off stump, Dilshan can't time the forceful punch off the back foot and finds cover

5.5

Abdul Razzaq to Dilshan, 1 run, legcutter on middle and off, Dilshan opens the face and runs it down to third man for a single

5.6

Abdul Razzaq to Tharanga, 1 run, ahh, Pakistan. Tharanga is let off, he should have been run out by two yards. On a length on middle stump, Tharanga turns it away to square leg and takes off. Mistake. The throw comes in, not the best, and it is not collected. Tharanga huffs in for the last couple of yards and makes his ground

End of over 6 (10 runs) Sri Lanka 26/0 (252 runs required from 44 overs, RR: 4.33, RRR: 5.72)
WU Tharanga    12* (16b 2x4)      Abdul Razzaq    3-1-15-0
TM Dilshan    13* (20b 2x4)      Shoaib Akhtar    3-0-10-0

6.1

Shoaib Akhtar to Tharanga, no run, back of a length outside off, Tharanga hangs back and steers to backward point

6.2

Shoaib Akhtar to Tharanga, 1 run, slow offcutter, 126 kph and outside leg before gripping and turning into the pads. Tharanga deflects it behind square for a single

6.3

Shoaib Akhtar to Dilshan, no run, short of a length outside off, this time Shoaib tries to punch on the up and finds cover

6.4

Shoaib Akhtar to Dilshan, no run, ah, bouncer at 143 kph, but it seemed to come slowly off the track as Dilshan tried to sway away and upper-cut. He couldn't get it away though.

6.5

Shoaib Akhtar to Dilshan, no run, this is real good bowling. 145 kph, and a McGrathesque length. No way he can get it away, Dilshan stays on leg stump and tries to force it through point, but finds the fielder

6.6

Shoaib Akhtar to Dilshan, 1 run, short ball, wider outside off and he looks to cut, but gets an under edge away to third man. Jittery start this for Sri Lanka.

End of over 7 (2 runs) Sri Lanka 28/0 (250 runs required from 43 overs, RR: 4.00, RRR: 5.81)
TM Dilshan    14* (24b 2x4)      Shoaib Akhtar    4-0-12-0
WU Tharanga    13* (18b 2x4)      Abdul Razzaq    3-1-15-0

Gul comes on now. Sri Lanka need to break free here.

7.1

Umar Gul to Dilshan, no run, Dilshan can't time a ball for the world today. Gul sprays the first one on the pads and he looks to hoick it behind square. Doesn't make contact and it thuds into the pads.

7.2

Umar Gul to Dilshan, no run, another wild swing. Rameez Raja says Dilshan's looking like a tail-ender. I think that's a little uncharitable. Back of a length outside off, flails away violently and misses.

7.3

Umar Gul to Dilshan, no run, gets bat on the ball this time, cracks a cut away straight to point

7.4

Umar Gul to Dilshan, 1 run, fuller length this time from Gul, Dilshan looks to drive on the up. Timing is again conspicuous by its absence. Played so feebly that he gets a single despite playing straight to mid off

7.5

Umar Gul to Tharanga, no run, 138 kph, short ball hustles Tharanga into the late steer and he's hoplessly late on the shot

7.6

Umar Gul to Tharanga, no run, ends the over with a quiet dab to point as Gul gives him no room outside off, played straight to point.

Ending that over with this imagined gem from Andy Zaltzman. Umar Gul's dream is to discover a chemical element and name it UmarGullium.

End of over 8 (1 run) Sri Lanka 29/0 (249 runs required from 42 overs, RR: 3.62, RRR: 5.92)
WU Tharanga    13* (20b 2x4)      Umar Gul    1-0-1-0
TM Dilshan    15* (28b 2x4)      Shoaib Akhtar    4-0-12-0

8.1

Shoaib Akhtar to Dilshan, no run, seamless shift from pace to seam for Shoaib, leaves Dilshan looking sheepish as it darts away from middle stump line, past his flat-footed swish

8.2

Shoaib Akhtar to Dilshan, 1 run, short of a length, coming into Dilshan who mistimes the pull since he is beaten for pace. Edged and away for one to midwicket

8.3

Shoaib Akhtar to Tharanga, no run, fuller length on leg stump, at 141 kph, Tharangs check drives to mid on

8.4

Shoaib Akhtar to Tharanga, 1 run, he gets the single away, playing back to a delivery on a length outside off, goes away off the inside edge to mid on for one

8.5

Shoaib Akhtar to Dilshan, FOUR, that's a slice of life for Dilshan. Short ball, just outside off, he again looks for a whole-hearted carve and it flies away well over the solitary slip and down to third man

8.6

Shoaib Akhtar to Dilshan, no run, short length again, comes into the batsman and Dilshan looks to whip it square and misses

End of over 9 (6 runs) Sri Lanka 35/0 (243 runs required from 41 overs, RR: 3.88, RRR: 5.92)
TM Dilshan    20* (32b 3x4)      Shoaib Akhtar    5-0-18-0
WU Tharanga    14* (22b 2x4)      Umar Gul    1-0-1-0

9.1

Umar Gul to Tharanga, 1 run, full length ball on leg stump, it is squeezed away to mid on for a single

9.2

Umar Gul to Dilshan, 1 run, Gul hits the deck hard as he always does, angling into the pads and Dilshan somehow gets a single away to square leg

9.3

Umar Gul to Tharanga, FOUR, Tharanga is looking the better batsman out there, though it is not saying much. Short ball from Gul, angles across Tharanga who arches back and makes room to crack a cut through point.

9.4

Umar Gul to Tharanga, no run, whoa, where did that bounce from? 135 kph and a foot short of a length, Tharanga was looking to steer the ball to third man, but the ball missed his bat my half a foot as it reared up like the Loch Ness. Kamran did well to leap up and collect it

9.5

Umar Gul to Tharanga, 1 run, Tharanga gets it away for one, stays back in the crease and opens the face to steer a single this time as Gul lands it fuller outside off.

9.6

Umar Gul to Dilshan, no run, length ball at 139 to end the over, Dilshan hits it so hard on the up, but can't time the shot. Straight to mid on

End of over 10 (7 runs) Sri Lanka 42/0 (236 runs required from 40 overs, RR: 4.20, RRR: 5.90)
TM Dilshan    21* (34b 3x4)      Umar Gul    2-0-8-0

10.5

Mohammad Hafeez to Tharanga, 1 wide, another wide, this time down the leg side and is called

10.5

Mohammad Hafeez to Tharanga, no run, sharp turn for Hafeez from off stump, Tharanga opens the face and adjusts to get it away to point

10.6

Mohammad Hafeez to Tharanga, FOUR, ah, he's spoilt the over with a half-tracker. Tharanga cashes in, rocking back and rifling another cut behind point for a single.

End of over 11 (6 runs) Sri Lanka 48/0 (230 runs required from 39 overs, RR: 4.36, RRR: 5.89)
WU Tharanga    24* (32b 4x4)      Mohammad Hafeez    1-0-6-0

Marcio: "Shoaib Akhtar is sweating so much, he should be sent Straight to China after the tournament ends. he could single handedly solve their water crisis."

There's a water crisis in China?

11.1

Umar Gul to Dilshan, FOUR, timing, Dilshan's long forgotten friend, makes a late appearance. Not too late really. Short ball from Gul, Dilshan hangs back, sets himself up beside the ball and cracks it away viciously. The man sweeping at deep backward point had no chance.

11.2

Umar Gul to Dilshan, no run, fuller delivery, coming into leg stump, Dilshan punches straight to mid on

11.3

Umar Gul to Dilshan, no run, tight line just outside off, Dilshan tries to force it off the back foot and finds point

11.4

Umar Gul to Dilshan, FOUR, another upper, the shot is working well for Dilshan today. Gul is looking to hassle him with bounce, but he can't keep Dilshan quiet, he stays under the ball and redirects it to third man.

11.5

Umar Gul to Dilshan, 1 no ball, well, Pakistan need a wicket. No-balls don't help. Plays it out to mid off, and retains strike for the free hit. Here we go ....

11.5

Umar Gul to Dilshan, 5 wides, Umar Gul may want to discover a chemical element, but he's not in his element today. Yet. Short ball, wide well over Dilshan's head and away to the boundary

11.5

Umar Gul to Dilshan, no run, finally he gets the free hit out of the way, full and a foot wide outside off, Dilshan squeezes it out square for a single

11.6

12.6

Mohammad Hafeez to Tharanga, no run, and another dot ball to end the over, short of a length and turning away, played away into the off side

14.1

Mohammad Hafeez to Tharanga, FOUR, Hafeez in the Powerplays is not working. Three fours in three overs. Short ball, just outside off, there are men patrolling the infield on the off side, but Tharanga has no problem cracking it away past all of them for four

14.2

Mohammad Hafeez to Tharanga, OUT, well, I take that back. Hafeez has nailed Tharanga. As mentioned earlier, there is an army of green shirts inside the circle on the off side. Tossed up outside on leg, Tharanga drives on the up, and picks out Afridi at mid-off. He's thrilled after pouching the catch, tumbling forward. The game is back in the balance after Sri Lanka's recovery of sorts.

The required rate is comfortably under six, as Afridi brings himself on

17.1

Shahid Afridi to Dilshan, 1 run, he is welcomed with a front foot slap wide of sweeper cover by Dilshan, just plonks the front foot out and gives it a fearful tonk

17.2

Shahid Afridi to Sangakkara, 1 run, pushed behind point off the back foot

Abdur Rehman to Sangakkara, (no ball) 1 run, Sanga backs away to the 17th stump, Rehman follows him full and fast, Sanga flicks it despite not having room. Oho, Rehman has over-stepped.

Silva to face the free-hit. What a waste.

36.6

Abdur Rehman to Silva, 2 runs, full toss on leg stump, he just can't time them today. Swings it high to deep square leg, couple of bounces to the man patrolling the deep.

37.1

Shahid Afridi to Sangakkara, no run, Afridi reviews an lbw decision turned down by Umpire Gould. Short ball, Sanga goes for the pull and misses. What a shocker of a review! That landed two miles outside leg stump. And hit him on the top flap of the pad. Might have been not out on height. Certainly not out for line. George Binoy says thats the worst review he has ever seen. I have seen worse, for third rate Bollywood movies.

37.2

Shahid Afridi to Sangakkara, no run, another one wide outside leg stump, Sanga looks to heave and miss? Will Afridi review it? Not this time.

37.3

Shahid Afridi to Sangakkara, 2 runs, finally Sanga connects with the sweep, Umar Gul does the good old skate along the tummy as he puts in a really amazing diving effort at deep midwicket. Keeps him down to two.

37.4

Shahid Afridi to Sangakkara, OUT, Captain strikes. Captain falls. How much of a contribution did Gul have to this dismissal? Sanga skips out of the crease. Afridi sees him and drops it short outside off. Sanga still wants to go over the top, so stops his initial shot and tries to cross-bat it over long on. Too ambitious. Shehzad runs in, tumbles forward and pouches. Finally someone doesn't let a stumping or a catch go.

38.2

Abdur Rehman to Silva, 1 run, tossed up on off, leans into the cover drive after skipping out and gets it away for one

38.3

Abdur Rehman to Mathews, no run, extra spin for Rehman, gets this to land on middle and off and break away sharply, past the outside edge

38.4

Abdur Rehman to Mathews, no run, ha, Kamran collects one and is so gleeful, he's appealed for it. Turned down and reviewed by Pakistan. Lovely turn from Rehman again, lands this outside off, turns away from Mathews who is squared up and it goes close to the outside edge. Can't say from the replay if he edged it. The way Kamran went up, he must have been 100% sure. But then, he is Kamran. Well, if this was an edge - and there's no way we can confirm it - then its a slur on the UDRS. Pakistan have been penalised a review for what actually may have been out. They are out of reviews now.

38.5

Abdur Rehman to Mathews, 1 run, back of a length outside off, dropped to cover for a single

38.6

Shahid Afridi to Mathews, no run, run out chance but Silva escapes. Mathews dinks Afridi from leg stump line to the leg side and starts, but he was never serious about the single. Silva ran half way down and then turned back as Kamran ran across, collected and had a go. He missed, and Silva made it despite sliding

39.2

40.1

Abdur Rehman to Silva, no run, full delivery outside off, he goes for the cut and finds point.

40.2

Abdur Rehman to Silva, 1 run, another run out chance missed. It's not even an event anymore. Silva chops straight to Shehzad, Mathews hares down, Silva responds late, Shehzad collects and throws at the bowler's end. And misses. The bowler is not there to collect and Silva tumbles in.

40.3

Abdur Rehman to Mathews, no run, Mathews runs out of the crease and looks to carve through the off side, can't time it

40.4

Shahid Afridi to Mathews, FOUR, a rare boundary for Sri Lanka. And it comes through good fortune. Angelo charges out and throws the bat at a flighted ball outside off. It turns away and takes the outside edge to run away for four through third man

41.2

Shahid Afridi to Mathews, no run, what a response, quicker one on the spot outside off, Mathews nearly edges it as he looks to dab to the off side

41.3

Shahid Afridi to Mathews, no run, and a slower one looped up this time, Mathews goes for a reverse sweep and misses

41.4

Goes for a sweep, the ball goes nowhere, the bat is headed for Harper at square leg, who ducks. Must be sweaty out there.

42.2

Abdur Rehman to Silva, FOUR, who said he can't hit a boundary. Rehman looks very disappointed it comes against him, as Silva goes ddown on a knee and slams a sweep over short fine leg

42.3

Abdur Rehman to Silva, FOUR, Silva is on a late roll here. Two fours in two balls. Rehman angles this on down the leg side again and Silva slaps it along to fine leg for four more

42.4

42.6

Abdur Rehman to Mathews, FOUR, aha, is this game turning again? Three fours in that over. Mathews times the slog sweep powerfully as Rehman messes up his line and length big time. Short ball on the stumps, no bounce or turn. Sat up and asked to be hit, Mathews did the needful.

43.4

Shahid Afridi to Mathews, OUT, Angelo is gone. Afridi has four. Shehzad has another catch. Angelo skips out of the crease, and Afridi sees him. He holds the length back and gets it to turn away. Angelo is forced to go with the shot and tries to cross-bat swipe it over long off. Mistimed, and it carries straight to Shehzad. Almost cleared the ropes, but not quite.

44.5

45.2

Shoaib Akhtar to Silva, FOUR, did someone give Silva Red Bull? He's certainly got wings now. Short ball from Akhtar, and out of nowhere, Silva murders it in front of midwicket. Finishes with a swagger as he sees it early and connects emphatically. The crowd is buzzing now.

45.3

Shoaib Akhtar to Silva, 1 run, short ball, Silva looks to heave over the leg side again, but gets only a single to backward square leg

45.4

Shoaib Akhtar to Perera, 2 runs, Perera is dropped by Younis. As always he wants to play the expansive pull. Shoaib sees him and bowls a slow short offcutter on leg stump, Perera goes for the pull and gets a top edge, Younis runs back from short fine leg, dives away and makes a superb effort, but he can't hold on.

45.5

Shoaib Akhtar to Perera, OUT, Shoaib Akhtar - rearranging stumps and landing like an aeroplane since 1997. What a legend. Thisara is gone. He finds out the hard way, than you can't set yourself up for pre-meditated slogs against the world's fastest. He moves the front foot away and looks to heave. It runs away to the of side and they try to steal a single. Herath made it in the nick of time as the throw missed. No marks for guessing that Rehman was not ready to collect the throw, behind the stumps.

46.2

47.6

Shoaib Akhtar to Kulasekara, 2 runs, Kula is not giving up just yet. Backs away to the leg side, and Shoaib responds with a bouncer on off stump. Kula keeps his cool and slaps it high over point for a couple before deep cover can get across.

49.2

Umar Gul to Herath, 1 run, right, he's got a single. Kula needs to hit more that four fours to win this game. Four fours will tie it. Full delivery on the stumps, another cross-batted heave and an inside edge to short fine leg, who does extremely well to dive and keep it down to one

49.3

Umar Gul to Kulasekara, FOUR, that's one of 'em four fours. Some finish this. Gul gives him just enough width outside off for Kula to swing his arms hard at it. It hits the outside edge, and flies away unimpeded to third man

49.4

Umar Gul to Kulasekara, no run, two things that rarely happened today just happened. Gul landed a yorker. And Kamran pouched a tough catch. Superb ball this, follows Kula as he backs away and it goes right through him. Kamran dives to the left and collects. He stands up sheepishly and claps for Gul. A smile on the face too.

49.5

Umar Gul to Kulasekara, OUT, Gul has a wicket and Kula's free-scoring surge has come to an end. Not a yorker this time, it was a low full toss on leg stump and Kula couldn't get as much muscle under it as he would have wanted. Umar Gul to Muralitharan, 1 leg bye, all over, after a lot of fuss. Pakistan had no business losing this, but they made a really solid effort. In the end, it was not enough, since Sri Lanka made more than their share of mistakes too. Murali backs away and looks to swing across the line, it hits his pads and goes to the leg side for a leg bye. Sighs of relief being heaved everywhere on the field

Right, the World Cup has come alive finally. Here's hoping for another humdinger when India play England tomorrow. Apologies for the scoring glitch when Mathews got out today - the pressure seemed to get to us as well, a bit! In fact, the umpires for that wrong. Mathews faced the last ball of thr 43rd, which he hit for four, and the first ball of the 44th. And he got out in that over. So it goes.

On behalf of Abhishek and the rest of the team, this is Nitin Sundar signing off. Cheers!

Presentations:

Afridi is the Man of the Match. Finally, a bowling effort gets rewarded! " That was a big game. The way Misbah and Younis played - beautiful and very mature. The fielders relaxed a bit, but on a stage like this we can't do that. I am sure they will improve in the coming games. Good conditions for bowlers - spin and bounce. This is a strong message to other teams, we will come stronger, game after game!"

Sangakkara: "Quite a few positives - we bowled well on a flat deck, but lost three wickets at the wrong time. We got a good start, and needed players to bat long. Unfortunately, Pakistan played very well. Younis and Misbah kept picking singles well, but we did well to drag it back to 270. We got to keep going on - it is a long tournament and lot of games to win."

Misbah who did not take the field says there's nothing to worry with his niggle and he should be good in a couple of days. "It was keeping a little bit low, and in the first innings things were good for batting. I just wanted to be there till the end."

Well, we have finally seen a game go the distance - good development after a full week of the World Cup. What stood out today was that the experienced players stood up for Pakistan under pressure - Misbah, Younis, Afridi and Shoaib. You will see that happen a lot, when the going gets tough.
