ICC Cricket World Cup - 25th match, Group B

India v Netherlands

India won by 5 wickets (with 81 balls remaining)

11.1

Chawla to Barresi, no run, leggie to start off, lands on a length on off stump and goes away. Defended to the off side

11.2

Chawla to Barresi, no run, good one, slows it through the air and nearly gets Barresi to chip it back at him. Lands just short

11.3

Chawla to Barresi, no run, on leg stump this time, Barresi can't get it away yet

11.4

Chawla to Barresi, 1 run, aha, Chawla nearly strikes as Barresi jumps out too early and gets too close to the ball. He manages to bring the bat down just in time to squeeze an inside egded single to square leg

11.5

Chawla to Szwarczynski, 1 run, appeal for lbw, turned down and given as a leg bye. Dhoni decided to review it. This is going to be interesting. The initial replay suggested there was some glove on it as Eric went for a sweep to a full ball on off stump. If it hadn't hit the glove that would have been out. Now, the umpire says not out. And then says it is not a leg bye. I am stumped. The umpire is confused. He's asks Eric to go back to take strike. Not sure how he can do that. Ah, now he gets it right. Eric gets the single. But it seems unfair that this should cost India a review. The umpire said leg bye, which is what prompted the review in the first place - Dhoni assumed it had hit pad first and hence was in for a chance to get the lbw. Reversing the leg bye and penalising the review that was based on the legb-bye seems unfair. UDRS controversies and India - now that's unconditional love!

11.6

Chawla to Barresi, 1 run, flatter and turning away, eventful over ends with a punch into the covers for one

Netherlands 46/0   PP Chawla 1-0-3-0

13.1

Chawla to Barresi, no run, flighted on middle and off, far better lengths from Piyush so far today, defended off the front foot down the track

13.2

Chawla to Barresi, no run, again full on the pads, driven down to mid on

13.3

Chawla to Barresi, 1 run, flighted on off stump this time, swept along to square leg for one more.

13.4

Chawla to Szwarczynski, FOUR, lovely shot from Eric to bring up 50. Sunny Gavaskar says that was a fine late cut. It was fine in more senses than one. Flatter leggie from Piyush, lands outside off and breaks away. Eric waits and then deftly opens the face of the bat to send it scurrying down to third man. Tendulkar had no chance to stop that.

13.5

Chawla to Szwarczynski, 1 run, tossed up this time, Eric skips out to the pitch and drives with the spin through mid off for one more

13.6

Chawla to Barresi, no run, too close to cut, just outside off and Barresi gets an under edge that goes away safely as he looks to chop through the off side

Netherlands 53/0   PP Chawla 2-0-9-0

15.1

Chawla to Szwarczynski, no run, turning away from off stump, defended with an opened face through backward point

15.2

Chawla to Szwarczynski, OUT, at long last, Piyush Chawla's much feted and much hyped googly has made its presence felt. Anil Kumble would have called that a flipper, but this is Chawla's googly, it is generally shorter in length than the leggie, and skids along with the angle, with slight inward turn. The delivery's hopes of striking hinge on the batsman's propensity to cut. Eric did just that, ambitiously setting himself up for the square cut by getting back and looking to come down on it. He saw it sliding in and tried to arrest the shot and cover the line. Too late. The ball hurries through and thuds into middle and leg. Chawla looks relieved, big break this for him.

ES Szwarczynski b Chawla 28 (59m 42b 4x4 0x6) SR: 66.66

23.1

Chawla to Cooper, 1 run, Has Chawla put him down? Full delivery on the stumps, Cooper punches it back without quite getting to the pitch and it hurries back towards Chawla who can't hold on. He was surprised, and went with the right hand.

23.6

Chawla to Cooper, 1 run, gets away with a scratchy short ball well outside off that Cooper doesn't quite carve over the infield. He mistimes into the covers for one and looks at the bottom of the bat.

Netherlands 84/2   PP Chawla 7-0-26-1

38.1

Chawla to Kervezee, OUT, and Chawla has a wicket first ball. He looks almost embarassed. Harbhajan at midwicket takes the catch at midwicket and must be wondering why he's not getting these freebies. That was dropped in Chawla's half. It was a miracle it did not bounce again before Kervezee hit it. He flat-batted the pull with such blinding ferocious intent that he forgot to place it. He picked out Harbhajan at deep midwicket.

AN Kervezee c Harbhajan Singh b Chawla 11 (45m 23b 1x4 0x6) SR: 47.82

38.2

Chawla to Kruger, 2 byes, not sure what that hit. Googly from Chawla, and on replays a sure edge as he poked for it. Dhoni missed it as it deviated away from him, and they get some runs through third man

40.4

Chawla to Borren, no run, Borren did well to get bat, or glove or whatever on that. Googly, hurries in sharply as Borren plays the cut. He was not even near picking it, and it hit the inside edge just before hitting the pad. Borren looks sheepish.

42.1

Chawla to Kruger, FOUR, friendly full toss from Chawla to begin the Powerplay, and Kruger gleefully dumps it through the covers after strutting out of the crease. It came at a nice hitting height too.

42.2

Chawla to Kruger, OUT, Another run out, this time Kruger is gone. Chawla lands it this time, but too full and there for the drive. Kruger times the shot well as he advances and flows through the shot, but picks out Kohli inside the circle at cover. He promptly returns to Dhoni who is quick with the collection and removes the bails in a flash.

42.5

Chawla to Borren, SIX, Borren has dumped Chawla over long on. Such a free-spirited slog, he just seemed to enjoy lacing into the length ball. Turning away from off and middle, Borren gets the front foot across and thwacks it with a crossed bat over the straight field. As Ravi Shastri would say, "That went, many a mile."

42.6

Chawla to Borren, SIX, another six here. Borrn has ruined Chawla's figures by taking 17 off the final over. This was more of a damage control ball. Flat and full on middle and leg, Borren again swept with power, getting the shot to fly away over midwicket. Fiercely powerful hit.
