ICC Cricket World Cup, 29th Match, Group B: India v South Africa at Nagpur, Mar 12, 2011
ICC Cricket World Cup - 29th match, Group B
South Africa won by 3 wickets (with 2 balls remaining)
12 March 2011 - day/night match (50-over match)

Welcome back to South Africa's pursuit of 297. They'll have to score at about a run a ball from the start. Against the new ball, that shouldn't be hard, but we saw towards the end of South Africa's innings that the spinners found significant turn in the pitch and so Harbhajan Singh and even Yuvraj could be dangerous. I'm Liam Brickhill and I'll be your commentator until the drinks break.

0.1

Khan to Amla, no run, good start from Zaheer, swing straight away back into the right-hander, who nudges into the leg side. Someone wanted a single there, confusion though and there was never one on. Smith is quickly sent back

0.2

Khan to Amla, FOUR, shot! This one didn't swing, or not nearly as much, and Amla stood tall to punch it with power and elegance to the cover boundary

0.3

Khan to Amla, no run, slanting across the right-hander once again, this lands well outside off and goes further though. No need to play at that

0.4

Khan to Amla, no run, Zak finds his line, aiming at the off stump. Amla is rock solid in defence

0.5

Khan to Amla, no run, well, that was anything but solid! Zaheer gives him width again and Amla just flings the bat out at it wildly, aiming to go through - or over - the off side. An airy waft, and a play-and-miss

0.6

Khan to Amla, no run, back to defence to finish the over, as Zaheer goes full and straight

End of over 1 (4 runs) South Africa 4/0 (293 runs required from 49 overs, RR: 4.00, RRR: 5.97)

    • HM Amla 4 (6b 1x4)
    • GC Smith 0 (0b)
    • Z Khan 1-0-4-0
1.1

Nehra to Smith, no run, width from Nehra, Smith gets across and slaps straight to point, on the bounce

1.2

Nehra to Smith, no run, this one hits the seam and comes back in to the left-hander, who tucks to square leg this time. Smith is going hard at the ball here

1.3

Nehra to Smith, 2 runs, chopped very hard into the ground, Yuvraj leaps at point but the ball bounces over him, and they're back for the second as third man runs round

1.4

Nehra to Smith, no run, fuller this time, aimed at the pads. Smith sets himself for the glance but ball beats bat and strikes pad

1.5

Nehra to Smith, FOUR, too short, and with a total lack of venom. Not sure what the plan was, but that was a pretty feeble attempt at a bouncer, and Smith is in no trouble hammering a muscle-bound pull out to midwicket

1.6

Nehra to Smith, 1 run, tapped down to third man, a single to finish the over

End of over 2 (7 runs) South Africa 11/0 (286 runs required from 48 overs, RR: 5.50, RRR: 5.95)

    • GC Smith 7 (6b 1x4)
    • HM Amla 4 (6b 1x4)
    • A Nehra 1-0-7-0
    • Z Khan 1-0-4-0

San isn't happy: "Why not open with a spinner and give the openers something to think about? Havin 3 medium pace bowlers on what he himself described as a dry wicket!!! I am afraid dhoni has become too stubborn and absolutely one dimensional"

2.1

Khan to Smith, no run, Zaheer is getting it to go both ways, this one snakes in through the air and is heading for middle and off - before Smith's heavy bat comes down in defence

2.2

Khan to Smith, no run, fuller and straighter this time, Smith aims a flick towards midwicket but hits the field

2.3

Khan to Smith, no run, resounding crack off the bat as Smith leans forward to drive a very full ball outside off, the ball is hit straight into the ground and bounces up to Kohli at cover. The crowd think it's a catch!

2.4

Khan to Smith, no run, has that kept low? Perhaps just a touch. It was nice and straight too, but Smith jabs down in defence in good time

2.5

Khan to Smith, no run, Smith looks almost like Shane Watson in mirror-image here as he steps forward and chop-cuts, but straight to point

2.6

Khan to Smith, 1 run, punched just straight of mid-on, and there's room for them to steal a single. Smith keeps strike

End of over 3 (1 run) South Africa 12/0 (285 runs required from 47 overs, RR: 4.00, RRR: 6.06)

    • GC Smith 8 (12b 1x4)
    • HM Amla 4 (6b 1x4)
    • Z Khan 2-0-5-0
    • A Nehra 1-0-7-0
3.1

Nehra to Smith, 2 runs, full, slipping into the pads, and flicked just behind square leg. Doesn't have the power to reach the boundary though

3.2

Nehra to Smith, no run, nipping back in to the batsman, that has moved appreciably and was zeroing in on Smith's middle stump. He's watching it closely, though, and defends wide-eyed to leg

3.3

Nehra to Smith, no run, full again, this time outside off and Smith presents the full face of the bat as he defends to mid-off

3.4

Nehra to Smith, no run, well, the width was there but Smith just tried to smash this too hard. His bottom hand took over completely and the ball went nowhere, trickling into the covers

3.5

Nehra to Smith, 1 run, slower through the air from Nehra, and he finds a touch of swing in to the left-hander. Smith slices across the ball and gets it down to third man

3.6

Nehra to Amla, no run, Amla really nails these backfoot drives, as he does now, but Yusuf Pathan gets in the way of the shot at cover. Saved four there

End of over 4 (3 runs) South Africa 15/0 (282 runs required from 46 overs, RR: 3.75, RRR: 6.13)

    • HM Amla 4 (7b 1x4)
    • GC Smith 11 (17b 1x4)
    • A Nehra 2-0-10-0
    • Z Khan 2-0-5-0
4.1

Khan to Smith, no run, full and straight, a cautious Smith defends towards mid-on

4.2

Khan to Smith, 1 run, back-of-a-length and rising towards the hip, nudged down to fine leg

4.3

Khan to Amla, 1 run, Amla punches through the line on the drive, but the ball just left him off the seam and a very thick edge flies down to third man

4.4

Khan to Smith, no run, hooping into Smith's famously 'big' pads, he usually thumps those away with ease but this time the ball nips past the bat and hits the pad. Definitely going down leg

4.5

Khan to Smith, no run, Smith walks down at Khan but then tries a cute dab to third man, the bowler had re-adjusted his length when he saw him coming and the ball zips past the outside edge

4.6

Khan to Smith, no run, punched firmly, but without much timing, to mid-on

End of over 5 (2 runs) South Africa 17/0 (280 runs required from 45 overs, RR: 3.40, RRR: 6.22)

    • GC Smith 12 (22b 1x4)
    • HM Amla 5 (8b 1x4)
    • Z Khan 3-0-7-0
    • A Nehra 2-0-10-0
5.1

Nehra to Amla, no run, Smith is struggling to middle it but Amla is really finding the middle here - but he also keeps picking out the fielders! This time he aims a cracking drive into the covers but straight to a man in blue

5.2

Nehra to Amla, no run, punched off the back foot, this time it's straight at Yusuf, who flings the ball at the non-striker's stumps. Smith is easily home, and the throw is wide

5.3

Nehra to Amla, FOUR, slashed over gully! He was offered width and went for it, a third or fourth slip might've been interested, but there isn't one and the ball beats third man too

5.4

Nehra to Amla, FOUR, Amla leans forward and drives again, this time threading the gap at cover ... a fielder is after it, it's Tendulkar and that's quite an effort for a 37-year-old, he chases it all the way and dives ... but can't quite haul it in

5.5

Nehra to Amla, no run, Nehra pulls the length back, punched into the covers

5.6

Nehra to Amla, 1 run, pushed towards mid-off, who is deep, and a single to finish the over

End of over 6 (9 runs) South Africa 26/0 (271 runs required from 44 overs, RR: 4.33, RRR: 6.15)

    • HM Amla 14 (14b 3x4)
    • GC Smith 12 (22b 1x4)
    • A Nehra 3-0-19-0
    • Z Khan 3-0-7-0
6.1

Khan to Amla, 1 run, drop-and-run from Amla, he taps the ball towards mid-off and they set off. I think Munaf is the fielder there ...

6.2

Khan to Smith, no run, Smith is struggling to get the ball off the square, now he walks down once again and Zaheer cuts one off the seam to strike the pad

6.3

Khan to Smith, no run, full and straight, Smith brings the bat down in an arc that sends it towards midwicket, straight to the fielder

6.4

Khan to Smith, 1 leg bye, and again, what's happened to Smith's bread-and-butter shot off his pads? He walks down the wicket, Zaheer aims at the pad and he can't lay anything on it. One off the pad

6.5

Khan to Amla, 1 run, was that slower? It was certainly a cutter. Amla waited on the ball, guiding it down to third man

6.6

Khan to Smith, no run, a touch of wobble through the air, the ball aimed right at middle, and Smith brings his bat down dead-straight in defence

One might've expected South Africa to target India's seamers, but Zaheer Khan and Ashish Nehra have done a fine job of keeping them quiet so far

End of over 7 (3 runs) South Africa 29/0 (268 runs required from 43 overs, RR: 4.14, RRR: 6.23)

    • GC Smith 12 (26b 1x4)
    • HM Amla 16 (16b 3x4)
    • Z Khan 4-0-9-0
    • A Nehra 3-0-19-0
7.1

Nehra to Amla, no run, slower again, dinked to point. It looks like this pitch has really slowed up under lights

7.2

Nehra to Amla, no run, pushed to mid-off, again there's no run to be had

7.3

Nehra to Amla, no run, Nehra's bowling nice and straight in this over, Amla has no room to work with and so can only push to mid-off again

7.4

Nehra to Amla, no run, offcutter by the left-arm seamer, the ball lands and nips away from Amla, who was trying to run it down to third man but is beaten

7.5

Nehra to Amla, FOUR, pitched up outside off, Amla steps forward and deliberately lifts it over cover. Cracking shot, power and placement

7.6

Nehra to Amla, FOUR, Nehra re-adjusts, but too much - it's on Amla's pads and he whips confidently to the square leg boundary

End of over 8 (8 runs) South Africa 37/0 (260 runs required from 42 overs, RR: 4.62, RRR: 6.19)

    • HM Amla 24 (22b 5x4)
    • GC Smith 12 (26b 1x4)
    • A Nehra 4-0-27-0
    • Z Khan 4-0-9-0
8.1

Khan to Smith, no run, Smith simply doesn't have a clue against Zaheer Khan - at least not in these conditions. Again he charges the bowler but then swipes with no great certainty, the ball hits pad and loops towards gully

8.2

Khan to Smith, FOUR, just a hint of desperation in that shot! Smith aims down the ground with the lofted drive, he doesn't get all of it but gets enough to beat mid-off and find the boundary

8.3

Khan to Smith, OUT, gone! Pitched up, Smith's eyes light up and he launches into a drive but hits it straight to Tendulkar at mid-off. Khan gets Smith once again, he's well and truly won this battle. An early breakthrough - just what India wanted!

GC Smith c Tendulkar b Khan 16 (39m 29b 2x4 0x6) SR: 55.17

8.4

Khan to Kallis, no run, a brave leave from Kallis! He steps forward and raises the bat high above his head, but that's not missed off stump by more than a couple of inches

8.5

Khan to Kallis, no run, Kallis steps forward and drives hard to mid-off

8.6

Khan to Kallis, no run, tight end to the over from Khan, he's been outstanding with the new ball and once again zones in on the stumps to draw a defensive stroke from Kallis

End of over 9 (4 runs) South Africa 41/1 (256 runs required from 41 overs, RR: 4.55, RRR: 6.24)

    • JH Kallis 0 (3b)
    • HM Amla 24 (22b 5x4)
    • Z Khan 5-0-13-1
    • A Nehra 4-0-27-0

Change in the attack, here's Munaf!

9.1

Patel to Amla, no run, Amla walks down the wicket and across to the off side, but Munaf adjusts his length and a rising ball is tapped to midwicket

9.2

Patel to Amla, no run, fuller, outside off and Amla steps into a fluid drive - but straight to the fielder

9.3

Patel to Amla, 1 run, definite seam movement for Munaf, away from the bat, but Amla isn't troubled as he runs it down to third man

9.4

Patel to Kallis, no run, back-of-a-length, Kallis stands at the crease and punches to cover. This really doesn't look like the easiest wicket to start on, definitely getting slower

9.5

Patel to Kallis, 1 run, Munaf strays onto leg stump and Kallis gets across to flick to fine leg, the ball goes straight to the man at 45

9.6

Patel to Amla, no run, the ball dies off the pitch, nipping under the bat as once again the batsman tries to force it away through the off side. No edge though, and if there had been one it wouldn't have reached the keeper

End of over 10 (2 runs) South Africa 43/1 (254 runs required from 40 overs, RR: 4.30, RRR: 6.35)

    • HM Amla 25 (26b 5x4)
    • JH Kallis 1 (5b)
    • MM Patel 1-0-2-0
    • Z Khan 5-0-13-1

India take the Bowling Powerplay straight away, and why not?

10.1

Nehra to Kallis, 1 run, a touch of extra bounce, but he rides it well, taking a hand off the bat and getting the ball down to third man

10.2

Nehra to Amla, no run, on a length and straight, pushed into the leg side

10.3

Nehra to Amla, no run, landing on off stump, the ball seams away off the pitch and Amla stands up to crack it to cover

10.4

Nehra to Amla, 1 run, Nehra has generally been good today, and he's keeping Kallis quiet here. More defence

10.5

Nehra to Kallis, no run, there's a single, finally, into the covers

10.6

Nehra to Kallis, 1 run, but he's tight on the stumps to end the over, no run there

End of over 11 (3 runs) South Africa 46/1 (251 runs required from 39 overs, RR: 4.18, RRR: 6.43)

    • JH Kallis 3 (8b)
    • HM Amla 26 (29b 5x4)
    • A Nehra 5-0-30-0
    • MM Patel 1-0-2-0
11.1

Patel to Kallis, no run, Kallis leans into a very Kallis-esque drive, standing tall and leading with the left elbow, but the ball goes straight to cover

11.2

Patel to Kallis, no run, pitched up again, another drive and this time it's to mid-off

11.3

Patel to Kallis, no run, Munaf keeps it full, and Kallis is content to bide his time, pushing to cover

11.4

Patel to Kallis, 1 run, now he tries to manufacture something, walking down and across to off. He flicks to midwicket's left, the fielder gets a hand to it but they taje a single

Fine leg comes up into the ring for Amla

11.5

Patel to Amla, no run, again the ball dies off the pitch, squeezing under the bat as Amla tries to run it down to third man

11.6

Patel to Amla, 1 run, this time it behaves, and Amla connects with the glide to third man

End of over 12 (2 runs) South Africa 48/1 (249 runs required from 38 overs, RR: 4.00, RRR: 6.55)

    • HM Amla 27 (31b 5x4)
    • JH Kallis 4 (12b)
    • MM Patel 2-0-4-0
    • A Nehra 5-0-30-0
12.1

Nehra to Amla, 2 runs, rising off a length on a leg stump line, Amla glances out to long leg. They're back for the second and that brings up South Africa's 50

12.2

Nehra to Amla, 1 run, driven towards mid-off, the timing is not great and so they've got time to sneak through for one

12.3

Nehra to Kallis, no run, another languid, aesthetically-pleasing drive from Kallis, but straight to cover

12.4

Nehra to Kallis, 1 run, the ball angles towards off stump but Kallis whips across the line to pick the gap at square leg. Gap in the circle that is, as there's a man out on the boundary there

Third man is also out, and there's a cover sweeper

12.5

Nehra to Amla, no run, great line, more than anything else, from Nehra as he lands one on off stump and beats the outside edge of the bat. It's kept low too, getting to the keeper on the bounce

12.6

Nehra to Amla, 1 run, Amla steps a foot across to off stump and flicks with springy wrists out to deep square leg

End of over 13 (5 runs) South Africa 53/1 (244 runs required from 37 overs, RR: 4.07, RRR: 6.59)

    • HM Amla 31 (35b 5x4)
    • JH Kallis 5 (14b)
    • A Nehra 6-0-35-0
    • MM Patel 2-0-4-0
13.1

Patel to Amla, 1 run, superb fielding! Amla punches towards mid-off and sets off, Kohli stops the ball and hurls it at the stumps in one fluid movement ... it misses by a whisker! Amla was gone if that had hit

13.2

Patel to Kallis, 1 run, angled down to third man

13.3

Patel to Amla, 1 run, good length, but outside off and Amla aims a deft little late cut down to third man ... Tendulkar sprints across and cuts it off, stopping the second run

13.4

Patel to Kallis, FOUR, South Africa needed a boundary, there it is! But that could easily have been a wicket too, Kallis thrashed a drive in the air and just over a salmon-leaping Kohli in the covers. Just past the outstretched fingers

13.5

Patel to Kallis, 1 run, another booming drive from Kallis, but he finds cover point. It's not stopped cleanly, so they get a single

13.6

Patel to Amla, 1 run, forced away off the back foot, again it's intercepted in the ring but not quickly enough to stop a cheeky single

End of over 14 (9 runs) South Africa 62/1 (235 runs required from 36 overs, RR: 4.42, RRR: 6.52)

    • HM Amla 34 (38b 5x4)
    • JH Kallis 11 (17b 1x4)
    • MM Patel 3-0-13-0
    • A Nehra 6-0-35-0
14.1

Nehra to Amla, 1 run, Amla walks to the off side but Nehra follows him, going well wide of off. Amla responds with a drive, but can't beat Kohli at mid-off, who is having a great time in the field tonight. Just a single

14.2

Nehra to Kallis, 2 runs, glanced off the pads and out towards deep square leg, they're back for the second

14.3

Nehra to Kallis, no run, Kohli is in the right position here - another punch off the back foot and he's the man well-positioned to stop it

14.4

Nehra to Kallis, no run, full and straight, Kallis bends into a straight drive but can't time it

14.5

Nehra to Kallis, no run, back of a length, outside off and rising. Kallis aims a punch to cover, but again there's no timing in the shot

14.6

Nehra to Kallis, 1 run, driven hard at mid-off, somehow there's time for a single there. The fielder is too deep

That's drinks and here's George Binoy

End of over 15 (4 runs) South Africa 66/1 (231 runs required from 35 overs, RR: 4.40, RRR: 6.60)

    • JH Kallis 14 (22b 1x4)

    • A Nehra 7-0-39-0

Cheers Liam. Cricinfo's stat-man Madhu: "India lost their last nine wickets for 29 runs collapsing from 267 for 1 to 296 all out. There have been four occasions when teams have lost eight wickets for 29 runs and three when there have been fewer than 29 runs scored for the last eight wickets. The lowest is 17, by Zimbabwe against Sri Lanka in 2004."

16.2

Pathan to Amla, 1 run, short again outside off stump, cut towards deep point

Here's an odd thought from Pritesh: "Dhoni has this habit of surprising. Who knows he might not give the bowl to Yuvraj at all today!"

17.1

Patel to Kallis, no run, good length ball on off stump, driven off the front foot towards mid-off

17.2

Patel to Kallis, 1 run, Kallis walks forward and towards the off to whip a length ball from off towards deep square

17.3

Patel to Amla, 1 run, length ball on off, driven off the back foot through cover point

17.4

Patel to Kallis, no run, Raina's on the field for ... I'll confirm shortly. So South Africa's batsmen can't simply punch to mid-off and run, like they did when Munaf or Zaheer was there

17.5

Patel to Kallis, 1 run, Kallis carves the ball over cover but to the fielder in the deep, flamboyant shot for one run

17.6

Patel to Amla, 1 run, Amla strides forward and flicks through midwicket with lost of wrist power

35.3

Khan to Kallis, no run, They're going for a review here. Kallis walked down and across to off and was struck on the pad, Zaheer wanted it straight away. It pitches inline, would've hit off but he's more than 2.5 metres down. Some part of the ball needs to be hitting middle if that is the case, so Kallis survives! That was mighty close

35.4

Khan to Kallis, 1 run, OUT, a great bouncer from Khan, Kallis whips it away from in front of his nose and out into the deep ... they come back for the second but the throw is good and the bails are whipped off in a flash ... he's gone! What terrific work from Dhoni, he took the ball in front of the stumps from Harbhajan's throw and swivelled round in mid-air to catch Kallis short. Pressure on South Africa's middle order!

Now this is interesting. That wicket brought India back into the game and it looks as though South Africa are trying to take the upper hand again by calling for the batting Powerplay. 124 from 84 needed, and it'll be Nehra first up

36.1

Nehra to de Villiers, 1 run, full of length and slanting towards off, de Villiers cracks it to mid-off and hares off for a single

36.2

Nehra to Duminy, FOUR, shot! Duminy has walked out into an intensely-pressurised situation but he's shown great composure to pick up the line and length early and open the face on the latest of late cuts down to the third man boundary

Nehra to Duminy, no run, swinging in through the air, on a length again, but no width to work with this time, dot ball

36.4

36.6

Nehra to de Villiers, no run, same shot, different result! Again he backs away, looking to scoop the ball to long leg but this time the ball zips right past him - and not far from the leg stump - through to Dhoni

37.3

Khan to Duminy, 1 run, superb ball, swinging in and the only thing that's saved Duminy from being plumb lbw was a little inside edge

37.4

Khan to de Villiers, 2 runs, full toss outside off, slammed down the ground but excellent, diving stop from Harbhajan saves the boundary! Great commitment, and they've only come back for two

37.5

Khan to de Villiers, 1 run, yorker, dug out to the mid-on fielder and they take him on ... fumbled! Who was that? Munaf it is, and he's let them through for one. To be fair, they were always going to try for the single, but he could've done better there

37.6

Khan to Duminy, 1 leg bye, Zaheer hits the seam, the ball jags back in and leaps off a length to beat Duminy's attempted whip to leg ... but de Villiers calls him through all the same, great running

    • Z Khan 8-0-22-1
    • A Nehra 8-0-49-0

What's happening here? It looks like Amla is coming out as a runner, but for who? It's de Villiers, looks like he's struggling with a sore knee. Munaf replaces Nehra.

38.1

Patel to Duminy, 1 run, nudged off the hip into the leg side

Neal: "India's Fielding have been incredible this innings, thats positive for them even they lose this match."

38.2

Patel to de Villiers, 1 run, de Villiers sets himself for a big shot, slamming the ball down the ground ... well, theoretically that's a caught-and-bowled chance, but it was hit really hard. Went right through Munaf's legs. de Villiers ran halfway down before he remembered he had a runner

38.3

Patel to Duminy, FOUR, Duminy jumps out and slashes over a leaping point fielder!

Patel to de Villiers, FOUR, full toss on middle and leg, de Villiers lifts it over wide mid-on and that's four!

38.6

Patel to de Villiers, no run, head-in-the-air slog from de Villiers, who steps away to leg. He doesn't get anywhere near the ball, which was on a length and shoots past leg stump

    • MM Patel 7-0-35-0

Zaheer continues ... this is his second-last over. Should Dhoni be using these overs from him now? Who will bowl at the death?

39.1

Khan to Duminy, 1 run, what a yorker! Swerving in towards middle, Duminy jabs down and gets a thick inside edge on it

39.2

Khan to de Villiers, FOUR, what on earth kind of shot is that? It defies description ... he set himself for the reverse sweep, but the ball appeared to hit the back of the bat and flew down to fine leg. Still, a boundary is a boundary

39.3

Khan to de Villiers, FOUR, four more, sliced over backward point! That was too full and too wide, it was always going to invite a big shot and he's got no cover there during the powerplay

39.4

Khan to de Villiers, 1 run, full toss on middle and off, cracked down to long-off

39.5

Khan to Duminy, SIX, down the ground, over the bowler's head, that's six! It was a slower ball from Khan, picked by Duminy and he lofted it dead straight down the ground. At first it didn't even look like he'd got all of that, but it crashed straight into the sightscreen

He's broken his bat too, so he's asking for a new one

39.6

Khan to Duminy, 1 run, yorker, snaking in towards off stump but not quite straight enough and Duminy jabs it out through point

South Africa win by three wickets, they had obviously planned their chase and pulled it off superbly at the end. Chokers? Not at all, this was a fighting performance from their lower order under real pressure. Fifties from Amla, Kallis and de Villiers formed the bulk of their effort, but there were contributions all through the order. South Africa move up to third on the Points Table with the win, India remain top with 7 points.

Robin Peterson: "I'm extremely ecstatic at the moment. To have a great game with so many great innings was such a good advert for the world cup. I've got to give Johan [Botha] credit, he put them under pressure with that cameo. We were quite calm in the changing room, but it was nice to come out on the winning side!"

M S Dhoni: "We just needed the bowlers to bowl in the right spot, but they were under tremendous pressure. The batsman played well, and if you're not bowling in the right spot more often than not you get hit. Bhajji was the only other choice for the last over, but I thought it would be better to use the seamer. Maybe I was wrong, but I thought that was the better option.

"The second powerplay, what is important is you don't play for the crowd you play for your country. We should have batted the full fifty overs. If we could have fielded better we could've made the score look bigger, but we're not a side known for our fielding."

Graeme Smith: "For 25 overs up front we took a beating, but for the other 75 we came back really hard and showed some real fight. The guys showed a lot of composure, it was helluva noisy out here. Dale bowled well, and to chase down the runs under pressure is great. The confidence you get out of a win like this is huge. I haven't seen Robbie [Peterson] hit the ball that clean in a long time, we've backed him in this world cup and he's performed. We can get on a run now, we've had long breaks between our games but we're playing every three or four days now."

Dale Steyn is Man of the Match for his five wickets: "After my first five overs I was staring down the barrel, but we pulled it backed beautifully. A great team performance. Once we picked up one wicket, we picked up another and we started build up pressure and a wave of energy on the field that we could capitalise on."

And there you have it. India's collapse of 9 for 29 at the end really hurt them there, what could an extra 20 to 30 runs have done? South Africa will take so much confidence from the way they played under pressure here. There are all sorts of goodies to peruse after this game: a match bulletin, Plays of the Day and even a match gallery.
