ICC Cricket World Cup - 40th match, Group A

Australia v Pakistan

Pakistan won by 4 wickets (with 54 balls remaining)

2.30pm It's all ready to start. Shane Watson and Brad Haddin will face up to Umar Gul with the new ball. He has two slips to start. Here we go...

2.25pm Shoaib has just posed for a picture on the boundary's edge with his fellow speedsters, Brett Lee and Shaun Tait. How lovely. Blimey, those three can be quick on their day ...

Are they in your Fantasy team? Mine has gone to seed in the past few days, but it's all to play for as the knock-outs approach.

2.20pm Here come the teams for the national anthems. A lively crowd at the Premadasa so far. A small threat of showers later in the day apparently, but clear skies for now.

2.05pm So, over to the permutations - and how often has that word been used in the past few days? Given what is going on in Dhaka at the moment, we look as though we finally know the identity of the last eight, but who will play who is still up for grabs. If Australia win this match, they will finish top of Group A, and Pakistan fourth. If Pakistan win, they will go top with Australia third ...

Here's one potential set of fixtures. If Australia maintain their unbeaten run, while West Indies lose against India just as Bangladesh look to be doing against South Africa, the quarter-finals could be as follows.

Australia v West Indies in Dhaka; India v New Zealand in Ahmedabad; Pakistan v South Africa in Dhaka, and England v Sri Lanka in Colombo. We shall see ...

2pm Australia have won the toss and will bat. Ricky Ponting has named the same side that saw off Canada last week, but the big news comes from the Pakistan camp, where Shoaib Akhtar will not be playing. Having announced his retirement, could it be he's played his last game? Surely he'll be back for the quarters, but you never know with Pakistan ...

Australia 1 Shane Watson, 2 Brad Haddin (wk), 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 Michael Clarke, 5 Cameron White, 6 Michael Hussey, 7 Steven Smith, 8 Mitchell Johnson, 9 Brett Lee, 10 Jason Krejza, 11 Shaun Tait.

Pakistan 1 Mohammad Hafeez, 2 Kamran Akmal (wk), 3 Asad Shafiq, 4 Younis Khan, 5 Misbah-ul-Haq, 6 Umar Akmal, 7 Shahid Afridi (capt), 8 Abdul Razzaq, 9 Umar Gul, 10 Abdur Rehman, 11 Wahab Riaz.

1.55pm Good morning and welcome to Cricinfo's ball-by-ball commentary of Group A's penultimate fixture - a tasty tussle between the undisputed World Cup heavyweights, Australia, and Pakistan, the team whose mantle as cricket's most mercurial performers has been swiped by England, of all the improbable sides.

It is almost 12 years and counting since Australia last lost a World Cup fixture, and guess who the opponents were back then? Yep, at Headingley on May 23, 1999, Pakistan won by 10 runs in what Graeme Swann would have described as an "arse-nipper", a result that put Aussies on the brink of elimination, and left them needing victory in every one of their remaining fixtures to lift the trophy. Sure enough, they responded (albeit with a winning tie at Edgbaston) and they haven't stopped since. This could be their 35th unbeaten World Cup match since that day ... could.

0.1

Umar Gul to Watson, no run, straight as a die, slightly back of a length, defended off the back foot

0.2

Umar Gul to Watson, no run, outside off stump, good carry again, left alone to the keeper

0.3

Umar Gul to Watson, 1 run, on the hip, turned down to fine leg, Australia are off the mark

0.4

Umar Gul to Haddin, no run, attacking the top of off stump, back of a length again, defended urgently back down the pitch

0.5

Umar Gul to Haddin, no run, blocked once again, a good tidy over so far to kick off the day's proceedings

0.6

Umar Gul to Haddin, no run, nothing to work with there, slightly angled into the pads, but starting from an off stump line. Defended to midwicket

End of over 1 (1 run) Australia 1/0 (RR: 1.00)
BJ Haddin    0* (3b)      Umar Gul    1-0-1-0
SR Watson    1* (3b)

An interesting choice, with Abdur Rehman the left-arm spinner sharing the new ball. A packed off-side field, as he comes round the wicket

1.1

Abdur Rehman to Watson, FOUR, top strike! Only three on the leg-side, so Watson flicks gloriously, and no-one can stop the boundary through midwicket

1.2

Abdur Rehman to Watson, no run, Review! Watson was eyeing up those acres on the leg-side again. Playing all around his front pad, and Pakistan ask for a second opinion. Very full length, but probably missing leg. No idea why these reviews are taking so long at the moment. Just get us the pitch map. Sure enough, it's an umpire's call

That's Pakistan's 16th review in the tournament, and they've only been successful with four! And Afridi has brought himself in from the boundary to make the call on the next review. He didn't have much of a view of that one...

1.3

Abdur Rehman to Watson, 1 leg bye, speared down the leg side, and flicks the pad

1.4

Abdur Rehman to Haddin, no run, driven hard to short midwicket, well fielded

1.5

Abdur Rehman to Haddin, no run, defended on middle stump, solidly forward

1.6

Abdur Rehman to Haddin, no run, a hint of turn as the ball straightens on middle. Solidly blocked again

End of over 2 (5 runs) Australia 6/0 (RR: 3.00)
BJ Haddin    0* (6b)      Abdur Rehman    1-0-4-0
SR Watson    5* (6b 1x4)      Umar Gul    1-0-1-0

What's the matter with Umar Gul? His knee looks to have locked up at the top of his mark, and he's in proper trouble. He tries to run in, but pulls up after a couple of paces, and now the physio is rushing out. This is not good at all. It looks as though he went down heavily on his kneecap while fielding in the last over. Lots of concerned looks out there.

Some grimaces from Gul as the physio gives him some brutal-looking treatment on the outfield. And now ... wow, it's a miracle cure! He's up and gambolling like a spring lamb. Tough love from the physio, and we might be over the worst!

2.1

Umar Gul to Watson, no run, no signs of discomfort there as Gul hits his length outside off, and Watson drives loosely

2.2

Umar Gul to Watson, 1 run, sliding into the pads, and flicked round the corner

2.3

Umar Gul to Haddin, no run, solid line and length, defended back to the bowler

2.4

Umar Gul to Haddin, no run, first signs of aggression from Haddin as he gave himself room for a slap, but his shot went straight to Misbah at short extra

2.5

Umar Gul to Haddin, no run, a very cunning slower ball, wraps his fingers round the side, and the ball dribbles past a swish and through to Akmal on the fifth bounce

2.6

Umar Gul to Haddin, 1 run, banged in short, a measured pull to backward square

End of over 3 (2 runs) Australia 8/0 (RR: 2.66)
BJ Haddin    1* (10b)      Umar Gul    2-0-3-0
SR Watson    6* (8b 1x4)      Abdur Rehman    1-0-4-0

3.1

Abdur Rehman to Haddin, 1 run, driven with a closed face to mid-on

3.2

Abdur Rehman to Watson, no run, short, but skids through, defended from the crease

3.3

Abdur Rehman to Watson, no run, fuller length, met with a big stride

3.4

Abdur Rehman to Watson, no run, a compact drive to mid-off

3.5

Abdur Rehman to Watson, no run, probing work from Rehman, Watson is finding the middle well enough, but no width to work with

3.6

Abdur Rehman to Watson, 1 run, on the pads to finish, a grateful flick to midwicket

End of over 4 (2 runs) Australia 10/0 (RR: 2.50)
SR Watson    7* (13b 1x4)      Abdur Rehman    2-0-6-0
BJ Haddin    2* (11b)      Umar Gul    2-0-3-0

4.1

Umar Gul to Watson, 2 runs, banged in short, a swivel pull through midwicket

4.2

Umar Gul to Watson, no run, full length and defended to cover

Two loud and prolonged cheers, maybe even a touch mocking, from the Mirpur crowd as Bangladesh first equal, and then pass, 58. But they are six down. It is, literally, all over bar the shouting in Dhaka

4.3

Umar Gul to Watson, OUT, that's the nut! Bang on target, nip off the seam, a loose drive and a touch of inside edge, and the stumps are shattered!

SR Watson b Umar Gul 9 (24m 16b 1x4 0x6) SR: 56.25

Now then Ricky Ponting. You wanted a test before the quarters. Here it comes

4.4

Umar Gul to Ponting, no run, tight line, and defended off the back foot

4.5

Umar Gul to Ponting, no run, deflected to midwicket, hopping across the stumps a touch, as is his wont

4.6

Umar Gul to Ponting, no run, outside off, Ponting shoulders arms dramatically

End of over 5 (2 runs) Australia 12/1 (RR: 2.40)
RT Ponting    0* (3b)      Umar Gul    3-0-5-1
BJ Haddin    2* (11b)      Abdur Rehman    2-0-6-0

Trying times for Australia ...

5.1

Abdur Rehman to Haddin, no run, defended on off stump, out to midwicket

5.2

Abdur Rehman to Haddin, SIX, bonk. That was an up and under lofted drive, all timing and just enough power as the ball plops over the rope at long-on

5.3

Abdur Rehman to Haddin, no run, defended into the off side

5.4

Abdur Rehman to Haddin, no run, stands tall in defence, and works the ball to cover off an inside edge

5.5

Abdur Rehman to Haddin, no run, big stride and blocked on off

5.6

Abdur Rehman to Haddin, 2 runs, aside from that one big blow, another tidy over from Rehman

End of over 6 (8 runs) Australia 20/1 (RR: 3.33)
BJ Haddin    10* (17b 1x6)      Abdur Rehman    3-0-14-0
RT Ponting    0* (3b)      Umar Gul    3-0-5-1

6.1

Umar Gul to Ponting, no run, on the pads, whisked into the leg side, without much timing

6.2

Umar Gul to Ponting, no run, attacking off stump once again, Ponting's defences are tested again

6.3

Umar Gul to Ponting, no run, a loopy slower ball, cunningly bowled but Ponting picked it early and defended

6.4

Umar Gul to Ponting, 1 leg bye, on the hip, flicked fine. Slim pickings so far against the wily Gul

6.5

Umar Gul to Haddin, no run, another slower ball, and Ponting has to scamper for his ground as Haddin turns down a sharp single in the gully. That could have been tight

6.6

Umar Gul to Haddin, no run, defended out to midwicket. Another unrelentingly accurate over from Gul

End of over 7 (1 run, maiden) Australia 21/1 (RR: 3.00)
BJ Haddin    10* (19b 1x6)      Umar Gul    4-1-5-1
RT Ponting    0* (7b)      Abdur Rehman    3-0-14-0

7.1

Abdur Rehman to Ponting, 1 run, flicked out to square leg

7.2

Abdur Rehman to Haddin, no run, Haddin advances, but Rehman's line is too good. Forced to defend

7.3

Abdur Rehman to Haddin, no run, blocked from the crease this time. Good metronomic work

7.4

Abdur Rehman to Haddin, no run, punched into the covers, but there's nothing doing there

7.5

Abdur Rehman to Haddin, 1 wide, poor ball, down the leg-side, and though it's a wide, Haddin missed out on an easy four as he swept at thin air

7.5

Abdur Rehman to Haddin, no run, back on a better line

7.6

Abdur Rehman to Haddin, no run, fenced out to point, and the grind continues for the Aussies

End of over 8 (2 runs) Australia 23/1 (RR: 2.87)
BJ Haddin    10* (24b 1x6)      Abdur Rehman    4-0-16-0
RT Ponting    1* (8b)      Umar Gul    4-1-5-1

8.1

Umar Gul to Ponting, 1 leg bye, on the pads, flicked to square leg. No bat involved

8.2

Umar Gul to Haddin, no run, advancing again, but still unable to thread the gap, Haddin's drive rolls to mid-off

8.3

Umar Gul to Haddin, 1 run, slower ball, beautifully bowled, Ponting waits and dabs a single to mid-on

8.4

Umar Gul to Ponting, 5 wides, whoops. That was Gul's first show of aggression, and ropey as Akmal's keeping may be, he was never going to intercept that!

8.4

Umar Gul to Ponting, no run, hits the seam and jags back in, but that was doing too much. Good delivery though

More than a third of Australia's runs have come from two deliveries ...

8.5

Umar Gul to Ponting, 1 run, flicked round the corner again, to backward square

8.6

Umar Gul to Haddin, FOUR, slower delivery, but too short, and Haddin's delayed pull has enough legs to go all the way. Australia needed that

End of over 9 (12 runs) Australia 35/1 (RR: 3.88)
BJ Haddin    15* (27b 1x4 1x6)      Umar Gul    5-1-16-1
RT Ponting    2* (11b)      Abdur Rehman    4-0-16-0

Rehman continues, as well he might

9.1

Abdur Rehman to Ponting, no run, round the wicket, looped onto a good length, defended

9.2

Abdur Rehman to Ponting, no run, a hint of turn from middle stump. Straightens into a defensive push

9.3

Abdur Rehman to Ponting, 1 run, punched to long-on

9.4

Abdur Rehman to Haddin, no run, tossed up towards the blockhole, defended again

9.5

Abdur Rehman to Haddin, no run, on the pads, poked to short midwicket

9.6

Abdur Rehman to Haddin, no run, good areas, as they say. Pitching middle from wide on the crease, and straightening. Defended

End of over 10 (1 run) Australia 36/1 (RR: 3.60)
BJ Haddin    15* (30b 1x4 1x6)      Abdur Rehman    5-0-17-0
RT Ponting    3* (14b)      Umar Gul    5-1-16-1

A massive cheer as Boom Boom comes into the attack. And the Powerplay has been taken as well

10.1

Shahid Afridi to Ponting, no run, a fraction short, and cut hard to point. Well stopped

10.2

Shahid Afridi to Ponting, 1 run, tossed up, and driven compactly to cover

10.3

Shahid Afridi to Haddin, no run, devious through the air, and zipping into a defensive push outside off

10.4

Shahid Afridi to Haddin, no run, blocked solidly on off stump

10.5

Shahid Afridi to Haddin, no run, the blade turns in the hands but midwicket tidies up. No angles for Australia to work with yet

10.6

Shahid Afridi to Haddin, 1 run, pushed firmly to cover. Pakistan in complete command at the moment. But they'll like a few wickets for their pressure

Another change, here comes Wahab Riaz

End of over 11 (2 runs) Australia 38/1 (RR: 3.45)
BJ Haddin    16* (34b 1x4 1x6)      Shahid Afridi    1-0-2-0
RT Ponting    4* (16b)      Abdur Rehman    5-0-17-0

11.1

Wahab Riaz to Haddin, 1 run, whippy delivery on off stump, Haddin jabs down into the gully and a sharp piece of fielding saves a run

11.2

Wahab Riaz to Ponting, 1 run, short and pulled handsomely, off the front foot, but without a lot of power

11.3

Wahab Riaz to Haddin, FOUR, a valuable boundary, and with fine leg up, Wahab can't really bowl there, on the hips. Enough bat to beat the field

11.4

Wahab Riaz to Haddin, 2 runs, on the pads again, Wahab's line isn't right just yet. A slide at square leg saves another four

11.5

Wahab Riaz to Haddin, no run, probed into the gully

11.6

Wahab Riaz to Haddin, no run, pushed down the track to mid-off. A bit of pressure released in that over

End of over 12 (8 runs) Australia 46/1 (RR: 3.83)
BJ Haddin    23* (39b 2x4 1x6)      Wahab Riaz    1-0-8-0
RT Ponting    5* (17b)      Shahid Afridi    1-0-2-0

12.1

Shahid Afridi to Ponting, 1 run, pushed into the gap to keep the strike rotating

12.2

Shahid Afridi to Haddin, FOUR, belted, hard and straight. Not a lot of feet involved, not a lot needed. That fizzed onto the bat, and straight off again

12.3

Shahid Afridi to Haddin, no run

12.4

Shahid Afridi to Haddin, no run, flighted and defended on off stump. Good bounce in that topspinner

12.5

Shahid Afridi to Haddin, 1 run, sharp calling for a deflection into the gully

12.6

Shahid Afridi to Ponting, no run, Australia starting to pick up the tempo now, a few quick singles making themselves available through urgent calls and calm deflections

End of over 13 (6 runs) Australia 52/1 (RR: 4.00)
RT Ponting    6* (19b)      Shahid Afridi    2-0-8-0
BJ Haddin    28* (43b 3x4 1x6)      Wahab Riaz    1-0-8-0

13.1

Wahab Riaz to Haddin, no run, a flat-footed whoosh outside off stump. Half an appeal from Akmal

13.2

Wahab Riaz to Haddin, 1 run, on the pads from Wahab, not quite the right line yet

13.3

Wahab Riaz to Ponting, FOUR, that was a remarkable shot! Short, and badly beaten by sharp lift, and Ponting's late pull takes a fat top-edge and sails over the keeper's head for four!

13.4

Wahab Riaz to Ponting, 1 run, another single to keep the strike rotating

13.5

Wahab Riaz to Haddin, 1 wide, that's a poor ball, Wahab is letting the noose slip now, with a wide down the leg side

13.5

Wahab Riaz to Haddin, 1 run, punched through point

13.6

Wahab Riaz to Ponting, FOUR, over-pitched outside off this time, and that's Ponting at his best. Leaning into his cover-drive and piercing the field. He's getting into his stride now

End of over 14 (12 runs) Australia 64/1 (RR: 4.57)
RT Ponting    15* (22b 2x4)      Wahab Riaz    2-0-20-0
BJ Haddin    30* (46b 3x4 1x6)      Shahid Afridi    2-0-8-0

14.1

Mohammad Hafeez to Haddin, 1 run

14.2

Mohammad Hafeez to Ponting, no run

14.3

Mohammad Hafeez to Ponting, no run

14.4

Mohammad Hafeez to Ponting, 1 run, on the pads, turned through midwicket

14.5

Mohammad Hafeez to Haddin, 1 run

14.6

Mohammad Hafeez to Ponting, no run, carefully prodded back to the bowler

End of over 15 (3 runs) Australia 67/1 (RR: 4.46)
RT Ponting    16* (26b 2x4)      Mohammad Hafeez    1-0-3-0
BJ Haddin    32* (48b 3x4 1x6)      Wahab Riaz    2-0-20-0

Hello everyone, small technical glitch there but you didn't miss much. Ponting looking a touch uncertain. Anyway, I'm Sahil and here's Afridi.

15.1

Shahid Afridi to Haddin, no run, quick and flat, sliding into Haddin who hurriedly pushed to leg

15.2

Shahid Afridi to Haddin, no run, once again Haddin is full of respect, which is no common thing

15.3

Shahid Afridi to Haddin, 1 run, touch more air here, Afridi tempting up outside off stump. Haddin eases into a drive to cover

15.4

Shahid Afridi to Ponting, no run, huge appeal from bowler and keeper as Afridi slides one into Ponting's pads but a big, big stride prevented trouble

15.5

Shahid Afridi to Ponting, 1 run, more secure here for the batsman, full-facing a single down the ground

15.6

Shahid Afridi to Haddin, 1 run, googly to finish the over, plenty of overspin finds some extra bounce. Haddin is unperturbed and nudges around the corner

It's drinks by the way. Australia making steady progress, nothing spectacular yet. Shoaib fans must be looking with disgust at the rubbish Wahab served up in his two overs.

End of over 16 (3 runs) Australia 70/1 (RR: 4.37)
BJ Haddin    34* (52b 3x4 1x6)      Shahid Afridi    3-0-11-0
RT Ponting    17* (28b 2x4)      Mohammad Hafeez    1-0-3-0

16.1

Mohammad Hafeez to Haddin, no run, tight line around middle on a length and Haddin content to push it away

16.2

Mohammad Hafeez to Haddin, no run, very careful from Haddin again, tapping back to the bowler

16.3

Mohammad Hafeez to Haddin, no run, hint of uncertainty as Haddin plays for spin that isn't there

16.4

Mohammad Hafeez to Haddin, no run, prodded back to the bowler again, good run of dots being built

16.5

Mohammad Hafeez to Haddin, no run, tossed up outside off stump, Haddin stretches across to dab back to Hafeez

16.6

Mohammad Hafeez to Haddin, 1 run, finally the single is taken as Haddin's flick goes wide of the bowler down to long-on

End of over 17 (1 run) Australia 71/1 (RR: 4.17)
BJ Haddin    35* (58b 3x4 1x6)      Mohammad Hafeez    2-0-4-0
RT Ponting    17* (28b 2x4)      Shahid Afridi    3-0-11-0

17.1

Shahid Afridi to Haddin, no run, no timing here for Haddin as he slaps to point

17.2

Shahid Afridi to Haddin, no run, ooh, the pressure almost told there. Attempting to run down to third man came off the bottom edge, onto the boot, very close to the stumps and almost to the keeper

17.3

Shahid Afridi to Haddin, no run, this time Haddin is more secure in defence

17.4

Shahid Afridi to Haddin, 1 run, Afridi is really tossing this up, clearly feels in good control and Haddin threads a single into space

17.5

Shahid Afridi to Ponting, no run, ah, nothing there for Ponting. He wanted to squeeze a cut away but it was too close to him for the shot

17.6

Shahid Afridi to Ponting, 1 run, nothing as ambitious this time from Ponting, instead easing his hands over the ball to flick to leg

End of over 18 (2 runs) Australia 73/1 (RR: 4.05)
RT Ponting    18* (30b 2x4)      Shahid Afridi    4-0-13-0
BJ Haddin    36* (62b 3x4 1x6)      Mohammad Hafeez    2-0-4-0

18.1

Mohammad Hafeez to Ponting, 1 run, Misbah has dropped Ponting at square leg! Really hard sweep flew low to him and went straight through. Looked like a tough chance though

18.2

Mohammad Hafeez to Haddin, 1 run, Haddin more calmly works a single

18.3

Mohammad Hafeez to Ponting, no run, careful defence from Ponting, he hasn't looked safe against Hafeez at all

18.4

Mohammad Hafeez to Ponting, OUT, gone! Akmal has held a very good catch and Ponting has to go! Things really bubbling over here. Ponting went back to cut a ball which wasn't really there for it, got a thick edge that Akmal did well to hold. It was given not out originally, but rightly was overturned on review. While waiting for the third umpire to confirm the edge there was some verbal exchanges though between Haddin and the Pakistan fielders and plenty of chat as Ponting was sent on his way

RT Ponting c †Kamran Akmal b Mohammad Hafeez 19 (57m 33b 2x4 0x6) SR: 57.57

18.5

Mohammad Hafeez to Clarke, no run, bit of spin here for Hafeez back into Clarke who prods it to leg

18.6

Mohammad Hafeez to Clarke, 1 run, carefully defended into the off side. Looked a touch uncertain as he did, getting a leading edge

So Ponting's poor run continues, he never looked particularly fluent. Clarke, on the other hand, is at the opposite end of the form spectrum.

End of over 19 (3 runs) Australia 76/2 (RR: 4.00)
MJ Clarke    1* (2b)      Mohammad Hafeez    3-0-7-1
BJ Haddin    37* (63b 3x4 1x6)      Shahid Afridi    4-0-13-0

Wahab is back, Afridi just trying to get rid of a few overs here. Clarke is a very good player of spin so Wahab is recalled.

19.1

Wahab Riaz to Clarke, 1 leg bye, starts a touch short and down the leg side, nibbled away behind square

19.2

Wahab Riaz to Haddin, no run, banged into the pitch short of a length. Haddin calmly stands tall to defend

19.3

Wahab Riaz to Haddin, no run, looks like Haddin has set his stall out to bat through. Very watchful at the moment

19.4

Wahab Riaz to Haddin, no run, much better this over from Wahab. This is his best delivery yet, good length around off stump, Haddin was hanging back and had to jab his defence away

19.5

Wahab Riaz to Haddin, 1 run, too short this time and allows Haddin to turn a single to midwicket

19.6

Wahab Riaz to Clarke, FOUR, Clarke gets four when he so nearly could have gone! Loose shot really, aiming an airy drive to a shortish ball, flew off the inside edge close to the stumps and actually not all that far from the wicketkeeper before disappearing to the boundary

End of over 20 (6 runs) Australia 82/2 (RR: 4.10)
MJ Clarke    5* (4b 1x4)      Wahab Riaz    3-0-25-0
BJ Haddin    38* (67b 3x4 1x6)      Mohammad Hafeez    3-0-7-1

20.1

Mohammad Hafeez to Haddin, no run, Umar scoots around at midwicket to cut off a Haddin flick

20.2

Mohammad Hafeez to Haddin, no run, doosra, or possibly just one that didn't spin. Either way Haddin was very careful in defence

20.3

Mohammad Hafeez to Haddin, no run, ooh, Haddin advances and again is defeated by back of turn, thickish outside edge ran along the ground to point

20.4

Mohammad Hafeez to Haddin, 1 run, this is far safer, pushed down to long-on

20.5

Mohammad Hafeez to Clarke, no run, Clarke flicks firmly but straight to square leg

20.6

Mohammad Hafeez to Clarke, no run, the bounce and sprightliness seems to have returned to Clarke's set up at the crease. Even as he defends back to the bowler

End of over 21 (1 run) Australia 83/2 (RR: 3.95)
MJ Clarke    5* (6b 1x4)      Mohammad Hafeez    4-0-8-1
BJ Haddin    39* (71b 3x4 1x6)      Wahab Riaz    3-0-25-0

21.1

Wahab Riaz to Haddin, no run, Haddin wants a pop at Wahab I suspect, he's edging down the crease and winding up for a big shot but doesn't get the width he wants so only pushes back to the bowler

21.2

Wahab Riaz to Haddin, 1 run, this time there is width outside off and Haddin creams a drive to deep point

21.3

Wahab Riaz to Clarke, no run, better delivery this time, back of a length around off stump. Blocked to cover

21.4

Wahab Riaz to Clarke, 1 run, touch too wide and Clarke flashes a cut shot out to third man

21.5

Wahab Riaz to Haddin, 1 wide, nonsense down the leg side. Doesn't look like Wahab can land six deliveries consistently

21.5

Wahab Riaz to Haddin, no run, that's more like it from Wahab, fuller, quicker and straighter. Earns a forward block for the effort

21.6

Wahab Riaz to Haddin, 1 run, Haddin gets the slightest invitation of width and dabs down to third man

End of over 22 (4 runs) Australia 87/2 (RR: 3.95)

22.1

Mohammad Hafeez to Haddin, no run, very delicate from Haddin opening the face to steer to third man. Fairly ineffective though because there is a fielder there

22.2

Mohammad Hafeez to Haddin, 1 run, clipped past a diving Umar at midwicket, who is disgusted with himself for missing

22.3

Mohammad Hafeez to Clarke, no run, good work from Hafeez pinning Clarke to the crease

22.4

Mohammad Hafeez to Clarke, no run, Clarke whips to leg but picks out midwicket

22.5

Mohammad Hafeez to Clarke, no run, ooh, flash and a miss outside off stump. Similar to the Ponting dismissal but Clarke is in form so misses. Such are the unwritten laws of the game

22.6

Mohammad Hafeez to Clarke, 1 run, good work from Clarke here, skipping down the wicket and clipping to long-on

23.1

Wahab Riaz to Clarke, 1 run, too short from Wahab means Clarke can stand tall and run down to third man

23.2

Wahab Riaz to Haddin, no run, Haddin flashes outside off stump and misses

Just looking at the earlier incident when there were some verbals, Umar and Haddin had quite the face off!

23.3

Wahab Riaz to Haddin, no run, more secure this time by Haddin, getting in line to defend under his eyes

23.4

Wahab Riaz to Haddin, OUT, Wahab strikes and Australia are in trouble now! Akmal takes another catch! I between the dross Wahab has found some bounce and nibble and Haddin aimed a nothing steer to third man, got a faint edge and Kamran held on to the chance.

Well well, Australia haven't really been tested so far in this tournament but Cameron White and Clarke have some rebuilding work to do.

23.5

Wahab Riaz to White, 2 runs, after the good delivery Wahab serves up an easy one on the pads for White to clip towards square leg for a couple

23.6

Wahab Riaz to White, no run, this is fuller, much fuller but outside off stump and ignored by White

White comes into the game hideously out of form. David Hussey is waiting in the wings so he could do with runs today.

24.1

Mohammad Hafeez to Clarke, no run, Hafeez is doing a fine, fine job here. Nothing fancy, just hitting lengths and lines and nowhere for Clarke to go

24.2

Mohammad Hafeez to Clarke, no run, very carefully defended once more

24.3

Mohammad Hafeez to Clarke, 1 run, ooh, this was a very tight single. Clarke picked out Misbah at midwicket and hared off for a single. A quicker pick-up and a direct hit would have gone but as it was Clarke was safe

24.4

Mohammad Hafeez to White, no run, White is hanging back in his crease and looks rushed as he blocks this

24.5

Mohammad Hafeez to White, no run, carefully defended once more this time White got forward though

25.1

Wahab Riaz to Clarke, 1 wide, Wahab is pounding in after his wicket and this is quick but the length and line is wrong

25.1

Wahab Riaz to Clarke, FOUR, the shot looks risky but really from this line - wide outside off - Clarke is safe. He flashed an expansive drive off a thickish edge that flew past the slip to the third-man boundary

25.2

Wahab Riaz to Clarke, no run, poor shot this time, Wahab seems to have Clarke's beans going here. Just stood still and swiped across the line at fresh air

25.3

Wahab Riaz to Clarke, no run, far calmer on this occasion with Clarke flagging one through outside off

25.4

Wahab Riaz to Clarke, 1 run, Afridi fluffs a regulation stop at mid-off but it was always going to be a single

25.5

Wahab Riaz to White, 1 run, good run to bring up the Australia 100. White drops to point with soft hands and scoots through for a single

25.6

Wahab Riaz to Clarke, no run, solid delivery to end the over, on a length at off stump and Clarke gives it the respect it deserves

27.2

Shahid Afridi to Clarke, 2 runs, touch shorter and quicker and Clarke is back in a flash flicking into the leg side for a couple

27.3

Shahid Afridi to Clarke, no run, Clarke is offered some width to drive at but is careful on the shot

27.4

Shahid Afridi to Clarke, 1 run, this time he does pick up a single, flicking into space

27.5

Shahid Afridi to White, 1 run, good hands from White here, finally, as he nudges to deep square

27.6

Shahid Afridi to Clarke, 1 run, hint of spin from a shortish length, Clarke waits and then drives his bottom hand through the ball to send it from outside off stump down to long-on

28.3

Mohammad Hafeez to Clarke, 1 run, good follow-up, keeping the strike ticking by pushing down the ground

28.4

Mohammad Hafeez to White, no run, White can't match his partner's skills and picks out a fielder

28.5

Mohammad Hafeez to White, 1 run, big sweep heaved away this time, all along the ground to deep square

29.4

Shahid Afridi to White, no run, White tries to steal a single by dropping this towards point but he gets too much of it

29.5

Shahid Afridi to White, 2 runs, in the end it looks a good shot but White would have been worried for a moment as he lifted this high down towards long off

In actual fact, Hussey might as well save it for the knock-outs, but you know what I mean

34.2

Abdul Razzaq to Clarke, no run, defended with a hop into line, might have kept a bit low but Clarke hammed it up a touch

34.3

Abdul Razzaq to Clarke, no run, poked in the air, straight back past the bowler, who nearly brushes his fingers on the ball as it thuds into the non-striker's stumps

34.4

Abdul Razzaq to Clarke, OUT, that was coming all the way through that over. Clarke didn't look happy at Razzaq's box of tricks, and an attempted pull somehow wriggles through the stroke to dislodge the off bail

Umar Gul to Krejza, 2 runs, much too short and much too wide, this is poor stuff from Gul and Australia just building a decent run of play here. Krejza cuts out in front of deep cover for a couple

44.2

Umar Gul to Krejza, no run, better, much better. More intent on this Gul delivery, firing it in fuller and sliding into Smith who couldn't work it away

44.3

Umar Gul to Krejza, OUT, there it is! The Umar Gul inswinging yorker strikes again. Why did he wait so long? Krejza backed away to give himself room to pierce the off side but he missed and the stumps were shattered instead

JJ Krejza b Umar Gul 7 (22m 19b 0x4 0x6) SR: 36.84

Brett Lee is the new man, just needs to keep Smith company.

44.4

Umar Gul to Lee, FOUR, ooh, a second slip would have had it. As it is the outside edge flew wide of first slip and skimmed to the ropes. 200 must be Australia's target

44.5

Umar Gul to Lee, no run, hooping, late reverse-swing at a full length would have burst through but for Lee's inside edge

44.6

Umar Gul to Lee, no run, this one nips away and past an enquiring outside edge. Much better over from Gul that

End of over 45 (6 runs) Australia 173/8 (RR: 3.84)
B Lee    4* (3b 1x4)      Umar Gul    7-1-30-2
SPD Smith    24* (28b 1x4)      Shahid Afridi    8-0-31-0

With 45 overs gone Australia have no choice but to take a batting Powerplay.

45.1

Shahid Afridi to Smith, no run, the field comes in and Smith picks out cover

45.2

Shahid Afridi to Smith, no run, prodded back to the bowler

45.3

Shahid Afridi to Smith, 1 run, little bit short but it's quickly onto the batsman who flips a single towards midwicket

45.4

Shahid Afridi to Lee, 1 wide, speared a long way down the leg side

45.4

Shahid Afridi to Lee, 1 run, googly finds the gloves as Lee defends with very low hands, there are no slips in place or catchers up to the crease so Lee can feel safe

45.5

Shahid Afridi to Smith, OUT, Afridi strikes! Smith backs away to a googly that follows him and it crashes into middle stump

SPD Smith b Shahid Afridi 25 (46m 32b 1x4 0x6) SR: 78.12

If Australia don't pass 207 it will be their worst World Cup total since 1992! Yikes. Shaun Tait has the job of getting them somewhere near.

45.6

Shahid Afridi to Tait, no run, full, flat, spearing yorker. Tait manages to jab a bat down

End of over 46 (3 runs) Australia 176/9 (RR: 3.82)
SW Tait    0* (1b)      Shahid Afridi    9-0-34-1
B Lee    5* (4b 1x4)      Umar Gul    7-1-30-2

Right then, Lee might as well have a heave. Shaun Tait has never even batted in a World Cup. That said, heaving Gul's yorkers is no easy task.

46.1

Umar Gul to Lee, no run, this isn't a yorker but it's quick on a length, moving away and carefully blocked to cover

46.2

Umar Gul to Lee, no run, that's the delivery that he's famed for! It snakes back so late homing in on the toes. Lee desperately clamps a bat down in time

46.3

Umar Gul to Lee, no run, yorker followed by a short ball followed by a stare! Excellent bowling, this climbed past Lee

46.4

Umar Gul to Lee, OUT, that's it! Australia slump to 176 all out - their lowest since 1992. Pakistan have a celebratory huddle! Lee aimed a swipe but it got high on the bat and looped to mid-off

B Lee c Misbah-ul-Haq b Umar Gul 5 (11m 8b 1x4 0x6) SR: 62.50

Pakistan need 177 to win The last team to beat Australia in a World Cup have a fantastic opportunity to do it again. Australia were strangely tentative with the bat but before Pakistan fans celebrate too early, the pitch is touch on the slow side so the total is worth a little more. Not much though! Remember the winner tops Group A to set up a quarter-final date with West Indies, in all probability. Andrew McGlashan can tell you all about it in his bulletin and during the break I'm sure Pakistan fans would like to have their say on the Facebook page.
