ICC Cricket World Cup - 39th match, Group B

Bangladesh v South Africa

South Africa won by 206 runs

Shafiul will start off, he has a wide slip in place

9.27am: I'm Sid Talya, and I'll be taking you through the first innings. Sriram Veera will take over for the second. Raju and Gopi are our scorers for the day. Big cheers for the Bangladesh players as they walk out. Lovely rendition of Amar Sonar Bangla just minutes ago. Hashim Amla and Smith have made their way out as well. Ready for the start, we are.

9.22am Time for the anthems.

Do watch the updated XIs above. Ian Chappell, Geoffrey Boycott, Harsha Bhogle, Sanjay Manjrekar.....some of the people playing our World Cup fantasy game. What about you? Click here

Sriman: "Disastrous start!!! I have AB, Steyn and Morkel from SAF in my fantasy team..."

Toss: Smith calls and wins the toss. He's decided to bat. Ganguly was right then? Two changes: Parnell and Tsotsobe are playing, Steyn and Morkel are not. They've been rested. Bangladesh won't mind that. Imran Tahir's also been picked, an extra spinner in place of Colin Ingram. One change for Bangladesh, Naeem Islam comes in for Suhrawadi Shuvo. Allrounder for spinner. No AB de Villiers, still, for South Africa.

Athar Ali Khan doing the pitch report says this is a bowl-first pitch, given the overcast conditions and the moisture in the track. However, the experts in the ESPN Star studio, including Sourav Ganguly, believe there really isn't going to be much moisture in a track for a game that involves South Africa. They claim it's a bat-first pitch. Anyway, the suspense shall end in a minute when the toss happens. Disagreement among the experts there.

8.55am local time: Hello and welcome to the live coverage of the must-win game for Bangladesh, against South Africa in Mirpur. A do-or-die situation for the hosts following England's thrilling win against West Indies in Chennai the other night. South Africa are favourites to knock out the hosts but remember that the only win that Bangladesh have secured over South Africa in ODIs came in the World Cup. Plus, home advantage has to count for something. The toss is in another five minutes. Cloudy, overcast conditions to begin with.

Sashank: "Sid Talya?? would have been much better with starting letter M in the last name... anyways hoping to see a great green game" Indeed. The difference betweeen a T and an M is a few billion dollars. As I say that, it's become quite bright in Mirpur

John Muir: "What was Harper thinking? The impact on that ball he gave out lbw was a good 4 inches outside off stump. Even with the left-armer's angle in from the off to the left-hand batsman it only just would have clipped off stump. Thank goodness for DRS." Yes, it would have been what we generally refer to as a howler. But there also a doubt about whether or not there was an inside edge. I think the ball lobbed up off the pads and the slip fielder caught it. Either way, replays showed there was no contact with the bat and the impact was outside off

Dave: "John Muir's criticism of Harper seems particularly churlish. The umpire only sees the ball once at high speed, with moving body parts all around the point of impact. Aditya: "About the reversals against Harper's decisions, in a way I think the DRS has made the umpires go back to their instincts rather than spend too much analysing, which one has to admit is difficult to do while watching in real time. So yes there maybe a few reversals, but it also means that the umpires are going to rely a lot on their instinct knowing fully well that they have a fall back. So one can say they are a bit trigger happy now."

South Africa have now decided to take the batting Powerplay. Shakib to bowl

44.1

Shakib Al Hasan to Kallis, 1 run, short on middle, punched down the ground to long-on

Long-on, Long-off and deep midwicket are the three fielders in the deep

44.2

Shakib Al Hasan to du Plessis, 1 run, played away off the back foot past square leg for a single

44.3

Shakib Al Hasan to Kallis, OUT, Kallis falls, short and it took forever to get to him, tried to smack it through extra cover off the back foot, was expecting it to turn away but it went straight on, instead of extra cover it went straight into the palms of Shakib Al Hasan, who took it on the second attempt

JH Kallis c & b Shakib Al Hasan 69 (88m 76b 5x4 1x6) SR: 90.78

Just the third ball of the batting Powerplay and we have a wicket, but an excellent foundation for the hitters down the order to take advantage of. van Wyck can hit, and he's made his way in

44.4

Shakib Al Hasan to van Wyk, 1 run, quick single on the off side, played it off the back foot wide of cover

44.5

Shakib Al Hasan to du Plessis, no run, short ball down the leg side, tries to clip it square, misses, it's called a wide, Mushfiqur has appealed for a stumping as du Plessis did leave the crease for just a moment. The appeal for the stumping has been turned on but the review is for a caught-behind. Replays show there is definitely a deflection, but we can't really make out for sure if that was off the thigh pad or the bat. There is no Hot Spot. It's really difficult to make out. It's definitely not a wide, that's for sure. But even close-up replays are inconclusive. The benefit of the doubt goes to the batsman in the end. The wide has been reversed. Worth a review, definitely, but lack of technology the problem this time.

44.6

Shakib Al Hasan to du Plessis, 1 run, worked away off the back foot through square leg for a single

End of over 45 (4 runs) South Africa 225/4 (RR: 5.00)

Abdur Razzak to du Plessis, no run, short ball on middle and off, punched hard but straight to cover

45.2

Abdur Razzak to du Plessis, SIX, short and he connects it well, rocked back and pulled it high and handsome over long-on, came off the meat, poor delivery

45.3

Abdur Razzak to du Plessis, FOUR, another short delivery, short on middle and he rocks back to pull it over midwicket for a one-bounce four

45.4

Abdur Razzak to du Plessis, FOUR, unfortunate this time is Razzak, hurried onto the batsman, was the arm ball, and kept low as well. du Plessis got low and his bat down in time, it took the inside edge, went past short fine, Shafiul chased well and dived but his body made contact with the ropes as he was trying to drag it back in

Raises the fifty for du Plessis, a collective batting effort this from South Africa. Everyone's chipped in so far

45.5

Abdur Razzak to du Plessis, 1 run, worked away off the back foot wide of square leg for a single

45.6

46.2

MN van Wyk b Shakib Al Hasan 5 (13m 5b 0x4 0x6) SR: 100.00

F du Plessis c Tamim Iqbal b Rubel Hossain 52 (73m 52b 4x4 1x6) SR: 100.00

Robin Peterson, who won South Africa that game against India, comes in

47.4

Rubel Hossain to Peterson, FOUR, edged and four, he would be familiar with that shot, inside edge as he went for a pull over midwicket, went instead to the fine-leg boundary, 250 up for South Africa

47.5

Rubel Hossain to Peterson, 1 run, pushed off the front foot towards mid-off for a quick single

47.6

Rubel Hossain to Botha, FOUR, Botha plays the scoop and it pays off, there is a short fine leg in place but he just managed to evade him, full on middle and leg and he scoops it over the in-field to the ropes

End of over 48 (11 runs) South Africa 258/6 (RR: 5.37)
J Botha    7* (4b 1x4)      Rubel Hossain    7-0-45-2
RJ Peterson    5* (2b 1x4)      Shakib Al Hasan    10-0-46-2

48.5

Shafiul Islam to Peterson, 1 run, slower one and another inside edge bit this one rolls down in the direction of square leg, tried to make room and loft him over extra cover

48.6

Shafiul Islam to Botha, FOUR, Botha cases in on a length ball, pitched up on the off and he hammers that over mid-off to complete the Powerplay on a high for South Africa

52 runs for the loss of three wickets in the Powerplay. South Africa will take that. There's one more over to go.

End of over 49 (15 runs) South Africa 273/6 (RR: 5.57)
J Botha    12* (6b 2x4)      Shafiul Islam    5-0-44-0
RJ Peterson    15* (6b 3x4)      Rubel Hossain    7-0-45-2

Rubel has the ball

49.1

Rubel Hossain to Peterson, OUT, run-out, in the blockhole outside off, Peterson digs it out, Botha wants the single, Peterson sends him back, Rubel collects and throws down the stumps at his end to catch Botha short

Tsotsobe comes in

49.6

Rubel Hossain to Tsotsobe, FOUR, clubs it down the ground, that was a short delivery on middle and he swatted it back past the bowler to collect a boundary

South Africa may have lost a few wickets at the end but they've posted a tough target here. They're playing with three spinners, the track is keeping slow and low and despite a depleted bowling attack, with no Steyn or Morkel, they'll back themselves to defend this. Bangladesh have a big task ahead of them to stay in this competition. South Africa were helped by a series of partnerships and useful contributions, and some cameos towards the end. "It's a tough wicket, the pitch is a little slow and the ball was gripping a bit," says Faf du Plessis.

Bangladesh, in a do-or-die game, need to pull off something special to win this. Join Sriram Veera in 25 minutes for the chase. Abhishek Purohit's updated bulletin should be up soon.

Our Stats Editor Rajesh sends me this: "HIghest total chased here is 297, by India. Highest successful chase by Bangladesh though, is only 221."

There's more: "Highest successful chase in a day game here is only 251, again by India v Bangladesh in 2007. Only twice has a team successfully chased more than 200 in a day game here."

Ponder over that until Veera takes you through the remainder of the game. Adios.

End of over 50 (11 runs) South Africa 284/8
LL Tsotsobe    4* (2b 1x4)      Rubel Hossain    8-0-56-3
RJ Peterson    22* (9b 4x4)      Shafiul Islam    5-0-44-0
