Anthems time now. Here we go.

Toss news: West Indies have chosen to bat.

Three changes for West Indies: Gayle, Chanderpaul and Roach come in for Edwards, Benn and Andre Russell

One change for Pakistan: Saeed Ajmal will come in for Rehman.

We shall squeeze in some reader comments here. The captain's quotes are below.

Tim: "Would have preferred to see Russell instead of Rampaul but other than that like both these teams. Glad Windies showed the guts to drop Benn, who has been very disappointing."

Farrukh: "good to see ajmal back in team...west indies dint inducted suleman benn in their attack...so roach, rampaul and bichoo would be their main weapons...but Pakistan have much better bowling then w indies...inshallah we will win...:)"

Mark Kidger: "It's nearly 2 years since the Windies beat a top-level opponent in an ODI. Pakistan are playing very impressive cricket, so all logic says that this should be one-sided, but will Pakistan have an off-day after their great win against Australia? Long winning and losing sequences always end some time!"

Tim: "Sammy should bat at 3 again. Worked against England and I think it would be the sort of thing Pakistan would hate. They like to strangle teams. It's hard to strangle six hitters."

Andrew: "At least one of the teams (Pakistan) have made the right decision (dropping Rehman for Ajmal), but what on earth are the Windies thinking? Benn has been one of the best spinners at the WC so far (12 wickets at a sub 20 average)!?"

Shishank Dahiya: "I think WI might have missed a trick here by not including Andre Russell.Ravi might have got wickets in the last match but i think Russell has done enough in the WC to guarantee a place."

Shafaqat Ali: "I think windies have missed on trick here, left hand spinners have always done well against PAK."

Prasanna Seshadri: " West Indies are playing safe here by bringing Chanderpaul. And it's hard to imagine one 5 wicket haul by Rampaul replaces the consistent bowling all-rounder in Russel."

shankareta : "Is there any rule that Captains should not be dropped, Otherwise Benn in place of Sammy would have taken West Indies through"

Ali Datwani: "Ajmal having been played just one match might feel pressure to perform in a big stage like Quarter Final but will be interesting if he bowls up straight to the mighty Gayle."

Habeeb: "Pakistan should have given chance to Akthar..he may deliver his best in this important match."

Atif Shahbaz: "Is it not taking longer than usual to start the match? I made some calculations and found that 1 minute is passing in 2 minutes today."

Shahzad: "In an IDEAL WORLD we all would have liked sammy to go up to gayle and say, "Ok boss I have done my part; Now you captain, i sit out and russel plays for me."

Saad: "BIG thing for PAK to remember!!! 'IF' they suffer Gayle's onslaught up front then they should not panic because PAK's bowling is very much capable of doing what SA did against IND."

Derrick: "Pakistan are poor at chasing, plus wicket will deteriorate in latter half. I'd say its 50-50 unless pak bowlers pull off a stunner."

Anurag: "I was hoping to see the great man Akhtar retiring in style but dunno why he wasn't given a chance here. I hope WI score piles of runs but Pak somehow manage to win this. Afridi then reshuffle his bowlers in next match & we can see the Akhtar express firing for one last time...."

Sammy: "We gonna have a bat. We have to put a good total and come back and defend it. We are much more comfortable in setting a total. The bowling line up can defend it. This is do or die quarter-final, We have all the people in the Caribbean waking up now. We hope to put an excellent performance."

Afridi: "Toss doesn't give any difference. We bowled first against Australia; we will carry on with the same attitude. All the boys know the importance of this competition. We are very positive and looking forward to this game. Rehman has done a great job so far but we are going in with Saaed Ajmal as they have couple of left-handers. I am going in with the same batting order; maybe Razzaq might go up the order. We are planning game by game. Alhamdulillah, we have done a great job so far."

Pitch report by Wasim Akram: "There is green grass and hint of moisture but team will bat first. The ball will keep slow and low in the second innings. so win toss and bat first."

1.30 pm local time Hello hello! It does get better than this but don't let the marketing men know. No need to hype anything anymore, eh? This is the World-cup quarterfinal after all.

Will Pakistan play Shoaib Akthar? Will they play Saeed Ajmal? Will West Indies bring in Chanderpaul? Will they make Benn sit out and bring in Rampaul?

I don't think they will bring in Shoaib. They might agonise over Saeed Ajmal - Imran Khan has said they should play him- but might persevere with Rehman.

SMGavaskar has said that West Indies might think about playing only with Bishoo, drop Benn and bring in Rampaul.

Waqar Younis: "I am very happy. Beating Australia isn't easy but the boys stuck to the task. The boys worked really hard. We know where we came from in the last year or two. You got to be sensible with how you bowl. Umar Gul has been very sensible. Wahab might be little wayward but the whole bunch, if you take the bowling unit, we have done a super job. The tracks in Sri Lanka haven't been easy to bat; In India and Bangladesh it should get easier. All I am telling the boys is just to take one game at a time. One at a time. That's how we started the tournament and that's how we need to go forward."

Pakistan's bowling variety allows an extra batsman, says Osman, our Pakistan editor.

Nazeer sends in our first comment for the day: "why shouldn't Pakistan play both ajmal and rehman, the match is in sher e bangla where it has been a wee bit slow low and turning."

0.1

Umar Gul to Smith, FOUR, Whack! Smith sets the ball rolling in the first Quarter-final with a cracking square cut. Two slips in place and Smith spanks it past point. It was shortish and outside off and Smith loves to cut

0.2

Umar Gul to Smith, no run, bowls this straighter and Smith respects the line and length by tapping it back to the bowler

0.3

Umar Gul to Smith, no run, shout for lbw but it pitched outside leg. It was full in length, landed just outside leg and straightened to hit the pad in front of the leg stump.

0.4

Umar Gul to Smith, no run, lovely delivery. Just a bad ball first up but tight after that. This one straightens just outside off, Smith had a waft outside the line, he wasn't expecting the ball to straighten at all. The ball went through bat and pad gap to the keeper

0.5

Umar Gul to Smith, no run, takes this one away but Smith had his off stump covered and shouldered arms.

0.6

Umar Gul to Smith, no run, another one that straightens and whenever Gul has done that Smith has been in trouble. This one probably seams back a bit from the middle stump line and moves past the defensive prod to hit the thigh pad.

Hafeez to bowl his off breaks

1.1

Mohammad Hafeez to Gayle, no run, from round the stumps on the off stump line, Gayle gets forward to push it to the on side. Inside edge there.

1.2

Mohammad Hafeez to Gayle, no run, Shout for lbw Pad first or bat first? It came in with the arm and Gayle was late in picking it. He just about managed to stab it to his pad

1.3

Mohammad Hafeez to Gayle, 1 wide, this one slips down leg for a wide

1.3

Mohammad Hafeez to Gayle, no run, on the middle, again looking for that lbw, and Gayle gets the bat in front of the pad to defend

1.4

Mohammad Hafeez to Gayle, no run, around the off stump, pushed away to short midwicket

1.5

Mohammad Hafeez to Gayle, FOUR, Smack! The first ball that Hafeez flighted and Gayle pounces immediately. It was around off stump and he dragged it to wide midwicket boundary.

1.6

Mohammad Hafeez to Gayle, no run, leans well forward to defend this one to the leg side

End of over 2 (5 runs) West Indies 9/0 (RR: 4.50)

DS Smith    4* (6b 1x4)      Umar Gul    1-0-4-0

2.1

Umar Gul to Smith, no run, lands around middle and off and cuts away sharply. Smith was on the back foot and poked out at it. he didn't quite get close to it, though.

2.2

Umar Gul to Smith, 1 run, this one cuts across from outside leg and Smith gets back to deflect it to midwicket for a single

2.3

Umar Gul to Gayle, FOUR, Walloped! The Gayle charge is on. He rushed down the track, got outside the leg in the process and smashed this length delivery on the up and over mid-off.

2.4

Umar Gul to Gayle, no run, Ah! lovely stuff from Gul who goes for the yorker on the off stump line and Gayle digs it out back down the track.

No slips for Gayle. Short midwicket in.

2.5

Umar Gul to Gayle, OUT, Gul takes out Gayle. And he jumps in joy. It was a full length delivery around off; Gayle backed outside leg and went for his powerful lofted hit. He didn't get the elevation and the ball screamed to right of mid-off where who else but Shahid Afridi pouches it. Now then.. huge pressure on this West Indies team. How will they respond?

CH Gayle c Shahid Afridi b Umar Gul 8 (12m 9b 2x4 0x6) SR: 88.88

Sarwan walks out at no 3. Promoted ahead of the young Bravo. I hope Bravo is not in the "Washroom"!

2.6

Umar Gul to Sarwan, no run, lovely probing delivery in the corridor outside off, Sarwan gets forward and across, covers his off stump and shoulders arms

End of over 3 (5 runs) West Indies 14/1 (RR: 4.66)

3.2

Mohammad Hafeez to Smith, no run, gets back to try clipping this one to the leg but it rolls off the pad

3.3

Mohammad Hafeez to Smith, no run, turns away from the off stump, first sign of spin, pushed back to the bowler

3.4

Mohammad Hafeez to Smith, 1 run, leans forward to push it to mid-on for a quick single

Play held up. Not sure what's happening out there. The umpires talking. Ah here we go. The Bail is broken Perhaps, by Sarwan who loves to hammer the bail into the ground to mark his ground. I remember Praveen Amre, an Indian batsman, used to almost dig his own grave while in his stance. He would absolutely keep hammering the earth with his bat while awaiting the bowler

3.5

Mohammad Hafeez to Sarwan, no run, on the leg stump, nudged to short fine-leg

3.6

Mohammad Hafeez to Sarwan, no run, quicker, around the off stump line, defended to cover

End of over 4 (1 run) West Indies 15/1 (RR: 3.75)

4.1

Umar Gul to Smith, 1 run, short and outside of stump, Smith cuts it hard to point where there is a slight fumble. It was hit very powerfully.

4.2

Umar Gul to Sarwan, no run, in the zone outside off and Sarwan lets it go through to Akmal

4.3

Umar Gul to Sarwan, no run, fuller in length, probing to see if Sarwan is late in getting forward; he is but manages to push this one away to the on side of the pitch

4.4

Umar Gul to Sarwan, no run, Shout for a catch by Kamran. It was in the zone outside off and Sarwan went for a big cut shot. Kamran screamed out. They don't get for a review. No noise as the ball went past the bat

4.5

Umar Gul to Sarwan, no run, Gul continues to impress. This one lands on a good length just outside off and sort of holds its line. Sarwan shoulders arms again. Will he get on to cut back in

4.6

Umar Gul to Sarwan, no run, full in length around off stump, Sarwan mistimes his drive to mid-off

End of over 5 (1 run) West Indies 16/1 (RR: 3.20)
RR Sarwan    0* (8b)      Umar Gul    3-0-10-1
DS Smith    7* (13b 1x4)      Mohammad Hafeez    2-0-6-0

Abhishek, my colleague, says he lip read Afridi saying to Kamran: "'har cheez ka review nahin kar sakte yaar," (Can't review everything mate!"

5.1

Mohammad Hafeez to Smith, OUT, West Indies are wobbling here. If they don't take care, they would land in complete chaos soon. This one came in with the arm, as most Hafeez deliveries do, but West Indies are yet to figure him out. Smith was caught at the crease and he poked outside the line. Pretty clueless and the ball nailed him in front of the middle. Looked dead plumb.

DS Smith lbw b Mohammad Hafeez 7 (25m 14b 1x4 0x6) SR: 50.00

5.2

Mohammad Hafeez to Bravo, no run, Almost out! It was full in length on the off stump line, Bravo was caught off guard. He was shaping to get back and cut. Yeah cut! It was too full and he managed to get back in line to stab it away

5.3

Mohammad Hafeez to Bravo, no run, leans forward to defend to the on side

5.4

Mohammad Hafeez to Bravo, OUT, Bravo has been given out lbw and Windies go for review. Another one of those straighter ones from Hafeez. It landed full on a length on the off stump line and drifted in towards the leg stump line. Bravo was pushing way outside the line. Again, no clue about Hafeez's strength. That would have hit the leg stump. He is gone and West Indies are in disarray now.

DM Bravo lbw b Mohammad Hafeez 0 (2m 3b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

Now its up to Chanders and Sars. That old firm. Can they produce some magic? Chanders walks in, takes guard by hammering the bail into the earth. He then walks to the leg side and does some stretches.

5.5

Mohammad Hafeez to Chanderpaul, no run, That's the way to play it. he gets the bat in front of the pad to defend it down the track

5.6

Mohammad Hafeez to Chanderpaul, no run, turns this to Gul at short fine-leg region

End of over 6 (wicket maiden) West Indies 16/3 (RR: 2.66)

Chris: "I'm pretty sure Praveen Amre didn't *literally* dig his own grave at the crease. Unless, of course, he's buried in a cricket ground." Ha ha! Yeah. I meant almost literally. You should have seen him batting, though.

6.1

Umar Gul to Sarwan, no run, leans forward to drive this to the off side

6.2

Umar Gul to Sarwan, no run, on the middle stump line, pushed out to the on side

6.3

Umar Gul to Sarwan, 1 run, That old problem of Sarwan. He does get squared up when the ball straightens on the off stump line. For a top-order batsman, I am always surprised how much he gets squared up by that delivery. Edges this one to third man

Two slips in

6.4

Umar Gul to Chanderpaul, no run, goes for the yorker, Chanderpaul works it to midwicket

6.5

Umar Gul to Chanderpaul, no run, goes for the short pitched delivery in the zone outside off, Chanders arrests his shuffles, and sways away

6.6

Umar Gul to Chanderpaul, no run, shuffles across, gets behind the line of delivery moving across from the leg stump line and defends

End of over 7 (1 run) West Indies 17/3 (RR: 2.42)

8.2

Umar Gul to Sarwan, no run, short in length outside off stump, punched out to cover

8.3

Umar Gul to Sarwan, no run, stays back to punch this to the off side. He then taps the pitch in front of him, before taking a stroll to the leg side. He adjusts his gloves and returns

8.4

Umar Gul to Sarwan, no run, a low swinging full toss, Sarwan hits it hard but straight to cover. He then suggests he should have timed it through extra cover instead of going after it hard

8.5

Umar Gul to Sarwan, no run, short in length, bounces in to the middle, pushed out to the off side

Afridi comes on now. West Indies have already been through a lot before facing the World Cup's leading wicket taker.

16.1

Shahid Afridi to Sarwan, no run, drifts onto the pads, Sarwan tries to glance but finds short fine leg

16.2

Shahid Afridi to Sarwan, no run, back of a length on off stump, Sarwan defends to the off side

16.3

Shahid Afridi to Sarwan, no run, This seems like a ridicuous review for lbw. Sarwan has jumped out of the crease, he's atleast a couple of feet outside as he defends with bat and pad close together. Googly from Afridi, lands outside off and jams into bat and pad. Or is it pad and bat? The distance is over 2.5 m. Impact is outside the line. The only thing going for the appeal is that the ball is hitting off stump. The decision stays.

16.4

Shahid Afridi to Sarwan, no run, similar ball, similar appeal, same decision, but this time no referral. Sarwan was again out of the crease, but if anything this time he was hit in line. Hmm. Replays in. It was barely clipping the top of middle.

16.5

Shahid Afridi to Sarwan, no run, holds the length back, Sarwan feels for it after getting half forward and defends

16.6

Shahid Afridi to Sarwan, no run, interesting first over from Afridi, it is a maiden as Sarwan glances another one drifting into the pads, and Hafeez does well at short fine leg.

Replays in for the second appeal. It was barely clipping the top of middle.

17.1

Saeed Ajmal to Chanderpaul, no run, lands on leg and comes in, Chanders defends to the leg side

17.2

Saeed Ajmal to Chanderpaul, no run, turns away from middle, poked into the off side but without any intention to score

17.3

Saeed Ajmal to Chanderpaul, no run, on middle again, Chanders comes forward to defend.

17.4

Saeed Ajmal to Chanderpaul, 1 run, eventually he gets a single, as one delivery turns away sharply and bounces from middle and leg.

Widish slip in place.

17.5

Saeed Ajmal to Sarwan, no run, turning in from outside off, Sarwan forces back to the bowler off the front foot

17.6

Saeed Ajmal to Sarwan, no run, an airy cut to end the over, Sarwan misses as Ajmal zips one past a foot outside off. Not short or wide enough for the shot.

18.1

Shahid Afridi to Chanderpaul, 1 run, Afridi concedes his first run as Chanders pushes a full delivery towards long off

18.2

Shahid Afridi to Sarwan, 2 runs, dropped by Gul in clumsy fashion. Even Kamran looks incredulous! It wasn't that easy. Leggie from Afridi outside off, Sarwan again jumps out, gets to the flight and looks to chip over extra cover. Gul attacks the ball from widish long off at a poor angle, running sideways instead of head on. He then tries to tumble and pouch, gets his hands to it, and lets it slip.

18.3

Shahid Afridi to Sarwan, no run, full and wide outside off, Sarwan lets it go

18.4

Shahid Afridi to Sarwan, 1 run, he works another full ball to the leg side calmly for a single

18.5

Shahid Afridi to Chanderpaul, 1 run, Chanders whips with the wrists through square leg for a single

18.6

22.3

Shahid Afridi to Sarwan, 2 runs, Sarwan is out of the crease again, but gets too close to a full ball on leg stump and ends up mistiming a swipe to midwicket. All the same, its into the gap and he gets a couple

22.4

Shahid Afridi to Sarwan, no run, again Sarwan skips out of the crease, he's concerned about Afridi's lbw threat clearly. Played defensively into the off side

22.5

Shahid Afridi to Sarwan, 1 run, gets the single this time, again from out of the crease, he works it down past mid off

22.6

Shahid Afridi to Chanderpaul, no run, this is tragic enough without a run out. Sarwan almost makes it worse by running half way down the pitch as Chanders glides straight to short third man. He is able to get back in time though.

23.3

Saeed Ajmal to Sarwan, no run, Sarwan nearly, again, falls for the doosra. Back of a length outside off, and extra bounce as it holds its line. Sarwan ends up inside edging a forceful square drive and it goes close to the stumps.

24.1

Shahid Afridi to Sarwan, OUT, all over. Afridi has threatened to dismiss Sarwan right from the word go, and ends up getting him on the square drive. This time Sarwan doesn't jump out. Afridi keeps it full and a little wide of off stump, but importantly gets bounce out of the turf, and that did the trick. Sarwan went for the on the up square drive, but could not keep the shot down. The extra bounce meant, he carved it straight at Umar Akmal standing at point. West Indies are going nowhere.

26.4

Shahid Afridi to Pollard, OUT, the moment of truth has come. Pollard has gone. He's not the best players of spin. And sure not the best player of the best legspinner in the ODI format now. It would have required a miracle to see him come out of this unscathed. The only miracle in that dismissal was that Kamran held a sharp chance. It was the patent Afridi quicker one, delivered from a foot wide of the stumps, comes in with the angle, darts in on a length and hurries through without deviating much outside off. Pollard went for an ill-advised cut and got an inner edge. Kamran pouched and appealed hard. It was eventually given, and Pollard trudges away.

26.5

Shahid Afridi to Thomas, OUT, in and out. West Indies are not even referring them. Afridi sends down a trademark thunderbolt, meaner, faster, straighter and bouncier than the previous one. In less than a twinkling, it was across the turf, skidding past Thomas' backfoot defensive, pinning him in front of middle and leg. I can't believe they did not refer it, might have been worth a try. 27.5

Saeed Ajmal to Bishoo, OUT, West Indies are being Pakistunned here. Or should I say Paki-spun. Ajmal slips in another doosra from round the wicket. Bishoo did most things right, he leaned as far out as possible to cover the line and smother the spin. Clearly he wasn't picking the turn, but on this occasion, he did not pick the flight either.
