ICC Cricket World Cup - 4th quarter final

Sri Lanka v England

Sri Lanka won by 10 wickets (with 63 balls remaining)

Lasith Malinga prepares for the first over...and we still hang around for the clock to tick over.

Teams out for the anthems. Adil Rashid has completed his long journey from the Caribbean, it might be a short stay.

2.20pm A little more than 10 minutes away from the start so go and find yourself your Saturday beverage of choice and prepare for what should be a cracking game.

2.10pm Kumar Sangakkara put on a brave face at the toss and backed his side to win from any position. There is a thought their middle order is a weak link, but the top order is very strong. Sangakkara also has plenty of spin options - expect to see four of them in operation today.

The merry-go-round of England's opening pair has continued with Ian Bell moving up. It's a sensible move and gives Bell a chance to build an innings. Also a show of confidence in Tremlett - or a vote of no confidence in Anderson - after his five overs went for 47 against West Indies.

2.00pm Good start for Andrew Strauss, England have won the toss and will bat with an unchanged team. The stats for this ground show batting first is a huge advantage. In 49 completed games, 36 have been won by the side batting first. Nuwan Kulsekera misses out for Sri Lanka as Herath.

Sri Lanka 1 Upul Tharanga, 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (capt & wk), 4 Mahela Jayawardene, 5 Thilan Samaraweera, 6 Chamara Silva, 7 Angelo Mathews, 8 Rangana Herath, 9 Lasith Malinga, 10 Muttiah Muralitharan, 11 Ajantha Mendis

England 1 Andrew Strauss (capt), 2 Ian Bell, 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Ravi Bopara, 5 Eoin Morgan, 6 Matt Prior (wk), 7 Luke Wright, 8 Tim Bresnan, 9 James Tredwell, 10 Graeme Swann, 11 Chris Tremlett

1.55pm Interesting news filtering through from the ground is that England are unchanged which means no recall for Anderson as Chris Tremlett keeps his place. However, it appears they will switch the batting order and open with Ian Bell instead of Matt Prior. Sri Lanka set for three spinners as suggested.

1.45pm Hello everyone. We know three of the quarter-finalists but who will complete the list today? Sri Lanka or England? Home advantage, consistent form and a host of matchwinner bowlers favour Sri Lanka, but you can never write off England at this World Cup. They have learnt to live on the edge and that will serve them well when the going gets tough.

The first thing to say is that there was rain during the morning in Colombo but that has cleared up leaving a hot, muggy day. The team are out in the middle warming up with much speculation as to the side England will pick. Same as against West Indies or a recall for James Anderson? We'll know in a few minutes.

The talk is that Sri Lanka will play three spinners with a place for left-arm Rangana Herath. Also, each match from now on could be Muttiah Muralitharan's last. Surely he has a few tricks left. Check out what Andrew Miller makes of it all in his preview.

2.4

IR Bell    5* (9b 1x4)      SL Malinga    2-0-7-0
AJ Strauss    2* (9b)      TM Dilshan    1-1-0-0

3.1

Dilshan to Strauss, no run, almost a run out! Strauss came down the pitch, drove into the covers where Silva brought off a great save and Strauss had to turn quick to get back

3.2

Dilshan to Strauss, 1 run, that's a bit of a heave as he tries to break the shackles and the ball dribbles through square leg

IR Bell    6* (13b 1x4)      TM Dilshan    2-1-2-0
AJ Strauss    3* (11b)      SL Malinga    2-0-7-0

Early change of bowling as Angelo Mathews comes into the attack

4.1

Mathews to Bell, FOUR, lovely shot through the leg side, used his feet and taken from around middle and off with a whip of the wrists which beats deep square-leg

Sangakkara comes up to the stumps after that shot from Bell

4.2

Mathews to Bell, no run, outside off and driven to short cover

4.3

Mathews to Bell, 2 runs, tucked off the stumps backward of square on the leg side

4.4

4.6

Mathews to Bell, no run, defended into the off side

End of over 5 (8 runs) England 17/0 (RR: 3.40)
IR Bell    14* (19b 2x4)      AD Mathews    1-0-8-0
AJ Strauss    3* (11b)      TM Dilshan    2-1-2-0

5.1

Dilshan to Strauss, no run, he can't get this away as he drives to cover

5.2

Dilshan to Strauss, no run, that's close! He went for a sweep and the ball almost deflected into the stumps

5.3

Dilshan to Strauss, no run, misses another sweep as this goes down the leg side but it's not called wide

5.4

Dilshan to Strauss, 1 run, uses his feet and squirts off the inside edge into the leg side...he's really struggling and has a smile to himself

5.5

Dilshan to Bell, 2 runs, placed nicely through the off side, presses onto the back foot and opened the face to beat cover

5.6

Dilshan to Bell, 1 run, fuller on off stump and worked down to long on

It's hot out there and the batsman have their first drink of the day

End of over 6 (4 runs) England 21/0 (RR: 3.50)
IR Bell    17* (21b 2x4)      TM Dilshan    3-1-6-0
AJ Strauss    4* (15b)      AD Mathews    1-0-8-0

6.1

Mathews to Bell, FOUR, cracked! Short and wide from Mathews, gave Bell plenty of time to cut it away through the off side...he's looking good

6.2

Mathews to Bell, no run, onto the back foot, defended to mid-on

6.3

Mathews to Bell, no run, onto the front foot to drive into the off side

6.4

Mathews to Bell, no run, flicked into the leg side but midwicket cuts off any runs

6.5

Mathews to Bell, no run, not much pace in this pitch and Bell doesn't time this drive which bobbles back towards Mathews

6.6

Mathews to Bell, 1 run, waits a little longer this time and places it towards mid-on who is fairly deep

End of over 7 (5 runs) England 26/0 (RR: 3.71)
IR Bell    22* (27b 3x4)      AD Mathews    2-0-13-0
AJ Strauss    4* (15b)      TM Dilshan    3-1-6-0

7.1

Dilshan to Bell, 1 run, uses his feet then drives into the off side wide of mid-off but it doesn't have the timing

7.2

Dilshan to Strauss, no run, driven back to the bowler...pressure builds on Strauss

7.3

Dilshan to Strauss, no run, angling towards leg stump and takes the pad

7.4

Dilshan to Strauss, 1 run, that's better, some nice footwork gets him into position to drive down to long off

7.5

Dilshan to Bell, 1 run, worked through midwicket and for a moment they want a couple but decide against it

7.6

Dilshan to Strauss, OUT, gone! That was always going to happen. A horrid innings from the captain is ended when misses a pull against a ball that doesn't bounce much. Much deserved for Dilshan

AJ Strauss b Dilshan 5 (30m 19b 0x4 0x6) SR: 26.31

Not Strauss's best day in the middle to say the least, but clever work from Sri Lanka

End of over 8 (3 runs) England 29/1 (RR: 3.62)
     TM Dilshan    4-1-9-1
IR Bell    24* (29b 3x4)      AD Mathews    2-0-13-0

Here's Jonathan Trott who isn't always comfortable with pace off the ball, either

8.1

Mathews to Bell, no run, pushed back to the bowler

8.2

Mathews to Bell, 1 run, neatly angled away down to third man...Bell has been playing a different game so far

8.3

Mathews to Trott, no run, full outside off, Trott drives to mid-on

8.4

Mathews to Trott, no run, driven on the up to short cover

8.5

Mathews to Trott, 1 run, ooh, he had to get a shift on but picked out the right man - Murali at mid-on - to take a quick single

8.6

Mathews to Bell, OUT, gone! Huge wicket for Sri Lanka as Bell chips a catch to midwicket. Was back of a length and Bell tried to force it through the leg side but didn't keep it down. Was a loose shot and a simple catch. Another start wasted from Bell. England wobbling.

IR Bell c Samaraweera b Mathews 25 (36m 32b 3x4 0x6) SR: 78.12

End of over 9 (2 runs) England 31/2 (RR: 3.44)
     AD Mathews    3-0-15-1
IJL Trott    1* (3b)      TM Dilshan    4-1-9-1

Ravi Bopara up to No. 4 in this match...big pressure on England now. Sri Lanka are swarming. Change of bowling, here's Herath with left-arm spin

9.1

Herath to Trott, no run, on off stump, defended on the front foot

9.2

Herath to Trott, no run, round the wicket, driven to short cover

9.3

Herath to Trott, no run, pushed off the back foot to mid-off

9.4

Herath to Trott, no run, angled into Trott who blocks to the off side

Silly point now comes in place alongside the slip

9.5

Herath to Trott, 1 run, beats short cover with a drive and gets a single to long off

9.6

Herath to Bopara, no run, pushed square on the off side

Ideal start for Sri Lanka and still no Murali or Mendis. Tough times for England. There's a change here, it's time for Sahil.

End of over 10 (1 run) England 32/2 (RR: 3.20)
RS Bopara    0* (1b)      HMRKB Herath    1-0-1-0
IJL Trott    2* (8b)      AD Mathews    3-0-15-1

Cheers Gnasher. What a start from Sri Lanka. England need to climb out of a World Cup hole again. First Powerplay is up, with England's lowest score of the tournament. Unsurprisingly, Sri Lanka have taken the bowling Powerplay.

10.1

Mathews to Trott, no run, solid from Mathews, hitting a decent length and line. Trott happy to eat some dot balls for a while

10.2

Mathews to Trott, no run, very straight, back of a length this time. Trott punches to mid-on but not on offer

10.3

Mathews to Trott, no run, Trott picks out cover with a careful drive

10.4

Mathews to Trott, 3 runs, combination of a powerful drive on the up and a slightly clumsy effort from Malinga at mid-off releases some of the pressure, not much though. Given the circumstances England could not ask for a better man than Trott

10.5

Mathews to Bopara, no run, this is such a big innings for Bopara, if he could just turn in a performance under intense pressure I think his international career could kick off. As it is he drives carefully

10.6

Mathews to Bopara, no run, ooh dear, Bopara and running is never a serene story. Here he prods to point sets off for a single before turning back in a hurry

End of over 11 (3 runs) England 35/2 (RR: 3.18)
RS Bopara    0* (3b)      AD Mathews    4-0-18-1
IJL Trott    5* (12b)      HMRKB Herath    1-0-1-0

11.1

Herath to Trott, no run, Herath has been nothing if not accurate and Trott's full face finds cover

11.2

Herath to Trott, 2 runs, Trott gets down on one knee very early and dinks over his shoulder

11.3

Herath to Trott, 1 run, yes, no, wait, yes, no, yes. no is the clear calling as Bopara's neat cut shot is half stopped at point. Never run on a misfield they say, and eventually Bopara followed the advice

11.4

Herath to Bopara, no run, fullish ball on middle that Bopara gets back to try and defend, looked hurried on the shot

11.5

Herath to Bopara, no run, more solid as Bopara comes forward to defend some flight from Herath

11.6

Herath to Bopara, FOUR, silky cut shot to a ball that was a fraction short. Bopara picked a gap behind point and threaded it through beautifully. That ought to ease his palpable nerves for a moment

End of over 12 (7 runs) England 42/2 (RR: 3.50)
RS Bopara    4* (6b 1x4)      HMRKB Herath    2-0-8-0
IJL Trott    8* (15b)      AD Mathews    4-0-18-1

12.1

Mathews to Trott, no run, full and straight from Mathews, and much the same from Trott's bat. Smartly fielded in the follow through

12.2

Mathews to Trott, 1 run, a late turn of the wrists meant Trott picked a gap between the bowler and short midwicket to earn a single

12.3

Mathews to Bopara, no run, slightly slower from Mathews and on this track it barely reaches Bopara who was waiting in position to defend

12.4

Mathews to Bopara, 1 run, the inside edge helps Bopara get off strike and it dribbles to mid-on

12.5

Mathews to Trott, no run, width outside off stump but Trott couldn't make use of it as he clunked a drive to cover. England are pinned back at the moment

12.6

Mathews to Trott, no run, Trott again times sweetly but straight to a fielder. Most other batsmen would be frustrated but I doubt Trott has even noticed

End of over 13 (2 runs) England 44/2 (RR: 3.38)
IJL Trott    9* (19b)      AD Mathews    5-0-20-1
RS Bopara    5* (8b 1x4)      HMRKB Herath    2-0-8-0

13.1

Herath to Bopara, no run, tossed up around off stump and Bopara stretches forward to defend under his eyes

13.2

Herath to Bopara, no run, ooh, some flight and bite from Herath. Bopara looked to turn it to leg but it spun onto the leading edge

13.3

Herath to Bopara, no run, massive shout for lbw as Bopara plays around a quicker ball, looked to be heading to leg but the umpire gave it not out and Sri Lanka opted not to review. Really looked worth another look

13.4

Herath to Bopara, no run, ooh! Close again! Bopara goes back to a full and flat ball that skids under his attempted cut this far past off stump

13.5

Herath to Bopara, no run, very tentative now Bopara, creeping forward and hanging a bat somewhere in line. The ball slides past the inside edge

13.6

Herath to Bopara, no run, Bopara plays for turn that isn't there and ends up prodding with an inside edge. Just shows what one spinning delivery can do. For the moment, Bopara has no clue if it's turning or not

End of over 14 (maiden) England 44/2 (RR: 3.14)
RS Bopara    5* (14b 1x4)      HMRKB Herath    3-1-8-0
IJL Trott    9* (19b)      AD Mathews    5-0-20-1

Slowly Sri Lanka are building towards their big gun, here's No. 2 in command, Mendis.

14.1

Mendis to Trott, 1 run, cagey start from Trott getting back to drive to cover, brings Bopara back on strike

14.2

Mendis to Bopara, no run, Bopara sniffs the ball in defence

14.3

Mendis to Bopara, no run, very straight from Mendis, as always, and Bopara is more confident on his defence this time

14.4

Mendis to Bopara, no run, Sangakkara is very confident with a stumping appeal! Might just be to heap pressure on Bopara as he played and missed in defence. His foot just popped up for a moment but it came down in time. Close though. Something has to give soon with Bopara

Bopara has had two scoring shots in 17 deliveries. Tense, tense times...

14.5

Mendis to Bopara, 1 run, finally picks up a single, pushing forward in defence towards cover

14.6

Mendis to Trott, no run, wonderful bowling has Sangakkara up in appeal again! After spinning a few away this one comes back and through the gate created by Trott's drive. Close to an inside edge, close to a stumping but neither in the end.

This ineptitude in one-day cricket against spin is really retro England.

End of over 15 (2 runs) England 46/2 (RR: 3.06)
IJL Trott    10* (21b)      BAW Mendis    1-0-2-0
RS Bopara    6* (18b 1x4)      HMRKB Herath    3-1-8-0

15.1

Herath to Bopara, no run, Bopara is pinned to the crease in defence. After all the playing and missing I doubt they'd fancy charging down

15.2

Herath to Bopara, 1 run, gold, otherwise known as a single, as Bopara sweeps very uneasily

15.3

Herath to Trott, 1 run, more conventional from Trott pushing a single down the ground

15.4

Herath to Bopara, no run, Bopara could be gone here lbw. Given not out by Doctrove, but he gives everything not out. Sri Lanka review. It was flighted and Bopara got forward and across his stumps. He's more than 2.5m down and 49% of the ball is hitting leg which means it just stays an on-field call

15.5

Herath to Bopara, 1 run, quicker ball dragged down, sweet mercy for Bopara as he turns it to leg

15.6

Herath to Trott, 2 runs, good work from Trott, skipping down the wicket and flicking fine around the corner for a couple that brings up a torturous England 50

End of over 16 (5 runs) England 51/2 (RR: 3.18)
IJL Trott    13* (23b)      HMRKB Herath    4-1-13-0
RS Bopara    8* (22b 1x4)      BAW Mendis    1-0-2-0

16.1

Mendis to Bopara, 1 run, a misfield from Malinga means a nervy single becomes more comfortable

16.2

Mendis to Trott, 3 runs, not entirely sure Trott read this but he's benefited from another misfield, chopping backwards of point to earn three

16.3

Mendis to Bopara, no run, Bopara is playing so late, clearly has no idea which way it's spinning

16.4

Mendis to Bopara, no run, more flight on this, ended up half-volley length but because Bopara is so unsure what's going on he can't time his drive

16.5

Mendis to Bopara, no run, lovely bowling, everything is straight on a length but spinning in different directions. England making it look impossible

16.6

Mendis to Bopara, 1 run, an outside edge trickles down point and Bopara hares off for a tight single. In his excitement Dilshan, who was backing up the throw, tumbled over

End of over 17 (5 runs) England 56/2 (RR: 3.29)
RS Bopara    10* (27b 1x4)      BAW Mendis    2-0-7-0
IJL Trott    16* (24b)      HMRKB Herath    4-1-13-0

17.1

Herath to Bopara, no run, some flight on this as Bopara defends

17.2

Herath to Bopara, 1 run, single, precious single, taken with a careful push wide of cover

17.3

Herath to Trott, 2 runs, good shot from Trott, he looks more certain here, full-facing a drive wide of cover for a couple

17.4

Herath to Trott, no run, touch short and a touch wide but it skids on and under Trott's attempted cut

17.5

Herath to Trott, no run, the bounce here is very low, Trott again shaped to cut but could only toe-end it

17.6

Herath to Trott, 1 run, more flight here and Trott celebrates by milking a single to long-off

Time for drinks. After watching that England show I could do with a stiff one. Remarkably tense first hour that. Murali hasn't even bowled yet but England are squirming against the spinners. It's not even turning that much but a slow deck, combined with the variation of the spinners has England scrambling. Perfect start from Sri Lanka after losing the toss. 240 looks a competitive total, but it also looks a long way away.

End of over 18 (4 runs) England 60/2 (RR: 3.33)
IJL Trott    19* (28b)      HMRKB Herath    5-1-17-0
RS Bopara    11* (29b 1x4)      BAW Mendis    2-0-7-0

Right this should break the shackles. Here's Murali, could be his last 10 overs in international cricket. Not sure it will be though...

18.1

Muralitharan to Trott, no run, starts bang on a length and line from around the wicket and Trott defends

18.2

Muralitharan to Trott, 1 run, top-edged sweep loops up towards fine leg, who stood motionless before eventually reacting. Collected on the bounce, could have been close

18.3

Muralitharan to Bopara, 2 runs, Bopara on the sweep, a paddle version

18.4

Muralitharan to Bopara, no run, doosra early on, oddly Bopara seemed to read it

18.5

Muralitharan to Bopara, no run, hint of spin back into Bopara who looks to play with the spin

18.6

Muralitharan to Bopara, no run, slightly fuller and quicker, and with Bopara playing Murali off the pitch he looks rushed in defence

End of over 19 (3 runs) England 63/2 (RR: 3.31)
RS Bopara    13* (33b 1x4)      M Muralitharan    1-0-3-0
IJL Trott    20* (30b)      HMRKB Herath    5-1-17-0

19.1

Mendis to Trott, no run, Trott forward and stern in defence. He'll be loving all this scrapping

19.2

Mendis to Trott, 1 run, flight from Mendis finds an inside edge while Trott drives

19.3

Mendis to Bopara, no run, Bopara forward to prod a defence

19.4

Mendis to Bopara, no run, very straight from Mendis, absolutely nowhere for Bopara to go unless he manufactures something

19.5

Mendis to Bopara, 1 run, the slightest hint of angle towards the pads means Bopara can inside-edge a single to midwicket

19.6

Mendis to Trott, no run, Trott prods to point to end another tight over

Right then, wicketless spell from me, here's Gnasher.

End of over 20 (2 runs) England 65/2 (RR: 3.25)
IJL Trott    21* (33b)      BAW Mendis    3-0-9-0
RS Bopara    14* (36b 1x4)      M Muralitharan    1-0-3-0

Cheers Sahil, tough work for the batsmen

20.1

Muralitharan to Bopara, 2 runs, picks this off leg stump and tickles it past short fine-leg

20.2

Muralitharan to Bopara, 1 run, steps back towards leg then drives square through the off side out to the sweeper

20.3

Muralitharan to Trott, no run, finds the inside edge as Trott plays forward but no one at short leg

20.4

Muralitharan to Trott, 1 run, onto the back foot and punched down the ground

20.5

Muralitharan to Bopara, 3 runs, that's very nicely done from Bopara, glides it past slip with a delicate late cut but some brilliant work on the boundary denies him a boundary

Short leg now comes in for Trott

20.6

Muralitharan to Trott, 1 run, swept from outside off down to deep square

End of over 21 (8 runs) England 73/2 (RR: 3.47)
IJL Trott    23* (36b)      M Muralitharan    2-0-11-0
RS Bopara    20* (39b 1x4)      BAW Mendis    3-0-9-0

21.1

Mendis to Trott, 1 run, goes down early for another sweep and sends it to deep backward square

21.2

Mendis to Bopara, 1 run, lofted down towards long on, was in the air for quite a while but well short of the fielder

21.3

Mendis to Trott, no run, bad and pad together into the off side

21.4

Mendis to Trott, 1 run, worked from off stump down to long on...sensible batting from this pair

21.5

Mendis to Bopara, 1 run, low full toss which Bopara bunts down the ground

21.6

IJL Trott c Jayawardene b Muralitharan 86 (172m 115b 2x4 0x6) SR: 74.78

Sri Lanka continue to keep England quiet in the closing overs...Luke Wright needs to try and slog a few

Murali getting some treatment on something... possibly his hamstring

48.4

Muralitharan to Prior, 3 wides, he's really limping...speared down the leg side, the keeper misses it as well so that's a bonus for England

49.6

Malinga to Prior, 1 run, full at the stumps, Prior swings hard and gets a single to midwicket to end the innings

England reach 229, a useful little effort from Matt Prior. It's a par score on this ground so gives them a fight chance, but the vital period will be how Sri Lanka go against the hard new ball. We'll only know the true value of Trott's innings in a few hours however, he's given England something to bowl at along with Eoin Morgan's fifty. Sri Lanka's bowlers were good - although England worked the spinners nicely - but some of the fielding was horrendous and could yet cost them. We'll be back in about half an hour at 6.30pm for the run chase. A place in the semi-finals at stake. Meanwhile, this is an interesting read about chasing on this ground and here's some fallout from what happened yesterday.

End of over 50 (7 runs) England 229/6
MJ Prior    22* (19b 2x4)      SL Malinga    10-0-46-1
LJ Wright    1* (3b)      M Muralitharan    9-0-54-2
