ICC Cricket World Cup - 2nd semi final

India v Pakistan

India won by 29 runs

1429 Right, the hype and the build-up is over. Sehwag on strike, Tendulkar at the non-striker's. Umar Gul with the new ball, ready to run in from over the wicket. This moment cannot have come soon enough.

Gul's leaping and stretching at the start of his run up. He looks pumped ... Let's play says the umpire.

1425 Right the anthems are done. Game time. The Nehra-Ashwin-Shoaib debate is temporarily closed until further notice ... Tendulkar is having a chat (looked a little more urgent than a chat) with Sehwag, as the Prime Ministers from both countries meet the teams. Let's get on with it!

1420 Nitin Sudar and Siddarth Ravindran will be tweeting at the speed of light. Do follow if you aren't already.

The teams are walking out for their national anthems.

"I'm more amazed by their decision to keep Yusef the destroyer out of the side! His spin is handy (especially with the absence of Ashwin) and they need his ability to play that tonking role," says Gareth.

1415 "NO ASHWIN! my heart just sank.. not impressed with Nehra so far. Wonder what is happening behind the scenes. Hope Dhoni knows something we don't, other than "Pakistan plays spin well". They'll spank Nehra if he bowls the way he's been doing," says Ajaysri.

There's also the dew factor to consider. If it's a clear day there's likely to be some dew, in which case the extra seamer might help. I'm playing the devil's advocate here. Dhoni and Kirsten would have had their reasons ... and they are the India captain and coach!

"Wahab did not deliver either, Shoaib would be a better choice. They have an extra bowler anyway and they could have risked with Shoaib. He is a Game Changer on a good day. Again Abdul Rehman would be a better choice than Saeed Ajmal," says Aamir.

"I have a sneaking suspicion this match will turn on Kamran's keeping and Zaheer's slower ball. I'm torn though, as I feel Pakistan can thrive on the pressure. Above all, let the result feel fair and that both sides gave their all!" says Rob Davis.

1410: The flood of readers gnashing their teeth at Shoaib's and Ashwin's exclusion is overwhelming. There is logic to both moves. Shoaib hasn't played for a while and Pakistan have done well without him. In his last game against New Zealand, Shoaib was rubbish. This is a semi-final with no room for sentimentality.

"I'm glad Shoaib is not playing, as both Tendulkar and Sehwag love pace, so its going to be interesting if Saeed Ajmal opens with Umar Gul from other end," says Fawad.

The Ashwin decision is trickier. The pitch is flat and might not have anything in it for the spinners. Pakistan are more adept at playing spin. Dhoni might have wanted more than two seam options. On the other hand, Ashwin is a fighter, a real competitior who opened the bowling in his first two games of the World Cup. He didn't do badly either. His omission is a huge decision and if Nehra doesn't deliver, Dhoni will need to buy some superb ear plugs.

Toss, 1400: Dhoni tosses. Afridi calls head. It's a tail. India will bat. "Runs on the board in a tense game," says Dhoni. Is this the biggest game of your life, Shastri asks Dhoni, who says it's difficult to say because he can't remember how he felt before previous crunch games.

India have left out R Ashwin, which is a big call, and brought in Ashish Nehra. Dhoni said it was because he wanted to have more options to work with.

"Terrible idea to leave out Ashwin. Hope India does not drop the world cup because of that," says NS.

Afridi says this is his biggest game as captain. Pakistan are playing an unchanged team, which means we might have seen the last of Shoaib Akhtar.

1357: Five out of seven day-night games here in the last five years won by the team batting first, but one of the exceptions was in an India-Pakistan match, when Pakistan chased down India's 321 with a ball to spare in 2007.

In the last 11 ODIs between the two teams, since 2007, only three have been won by the team winning the toss. Eight times, the team losing the toss has won the match.

"It's early, in fact very early morning in USA!! Indians and Pakistanis have gathered at common squares, cheering for their teams, there is some extra amount of energy. And poor Americans are confused and asking "Does this match resolve the Kashmir Issue" - says my friend from US," says Aniruddh.

Toss in three minutes ...

1340: Weather update: Last night's scary rain has disappeared and the sun is out in Mohali. No issues on the weather front at the moment. A bit too hot and a touch humid for the players liking, but that is the least of their concerns today.

Don't forget you can get wicket alerts for this game (in fact, every match we cover), with our free extension for Google Chrome.

"I feel Pakistan has a slight edge over India because of their respective strengths," says Balaji. "India's strength is batting, but a batsman gets to make only one mistake, where as a bowler can bounce back after being hit for a couple of boundaries by taking a wicket."

We're approaching 350k fans on our Facebook page. Join them! (or on Twitter if that's your bag).

1330: A familiar early bird writes in. "Although on paper India are much stronger, I just suspect that the weight of expectation will be too much for them and that Pakistan may just sneak this," says Mark Kidger. "Not too many people fancied Pakistan before the World Cup started, but their progress has been remarkably serene."

1320: Will Shoaib play? (He was bowling a while ago during the warm-ups) Will Munaf play? Or Nehra, or Sreesanth? Will Pakistan open with spin? Will India continue to bench Yusuf Pathan?

My favourite India-Pakistan memory is from an obscure warm-up match at The Oval during the 2009 World Twenty20. The game had nothing riding on it but the ground was packed, and unlike games in either India or Pakistan, where the crowd can be extremely partisan, there was equal support for both teams. So there were no pregnant silences when the "away" team hit a four or took a wicket. The noise was unbelievable for every ball ... India won that match but Pakistan famously went on to win the tournament, with their fans singing and dancing to Dil dil Pakistan throughout.

1310: Good afternoon and welcome to ESPNcricinfo's coverage of the second semi-final of the 2011 World Cup between India and Pakistan in Mohali. But you knew that already. Sri Lanka secured their place in the final last night and Kumar Sangakkara, unlike millions around the world today, said he didn't care about whom he might play in Mumbai.

Today's game has, perhaps unfortunately, mutated into all sorts of things beyond sport, but we'll just focus on the cricket. There was some drama late last night, when heavy rain lashed Chandhigarh, but it's clear this afternoon and will be all systems go.

We've rolled out a seriously heavyweight preview package for this contest, ideal way to spend the time before the toss. In his preview, Sriram Veera paints the clash as one between two rater different leaders of men - the "passionate, exhibitionist" Shahid Afridi v "uber-cool" MS Dhoni.

Staying on the topic of leadership, Osman Samiuddin says "Dhoni's equilibrium is startling. It is actually unnerving." And Pakistan would love to have some of it.

But while Dhoni has led India manfully without producing substantial innings of late, Osman says it is different in Pakistan, where "the success of any captain lies basically in his own individual success. Players respond naturally to the man who does well, because they think that makes him strong, the man who can get stuff done, the man who can make 'em or break 'em." And Afridi, the most visceral of men , has had plenty of that this World Cup.

We asked Sharda Ugra, our senior editor, to write about Pakistan. "Pakistan shows every cricketer in the world how it can actually be done," she said. "They win some and they lose a few but always they play like millions of kids do on the street - full on. When they go down, they go down in flames. When they do well, they can set the world on fire."

And Sambit Bal weighed in with this. "While the 22 cricketers will subject their skills and temperament to the toughest of tests; equally, fans in both countries (that means you!) will be on trial … To revel in victory is the greatest reward for the sports fan, but nothing dignifies the sport more than grace in defeat."

"I'm so tensed up that I decided not to watch the match on TV for first 10 overs. Very contented to read your commentary," says Mukunda.

1.2

Abdul Razzaq to Tendulkar, no run, Razzaq takes the pace off the ball and keeps a tight line around off, Tendulkar mis-times his attempted push towards cover

Abdul Razzaq has dismissed Tendulkar six times in ODIs, the most number of times he has dismissed any player. Rahul Dravid, Mahela Jayawarene and Jacob Oram have also fallen to Razzaq six times.

Umar Gul to Sehwag, no run, short of a length around the hips, Sehwag tucks the ball off his body towards the man at square leg

2.4

Umar Gul to Sehwag, FOUR, too straight again and Sehwag flicks, this time past the fielder at square leg and the ball races across his fast outfield towards the boundary before the fielder at long leg can get to it

There's a deep square leg now. Field changes galore.

2.5

Umar Gul to Sehwag, FOUR, that's the fourth of the over. A slower ball outside off stump. The length was short and there was width. Sehwag waited for it and cut the ball hard through point

2.6

Umar Gul to Sehwag, (no ball) FOUR, the fifth! And it's a front-foot no-ball as well. Too full outside off and Sehwag drills the ball off the front foot through extra cover. Gul is rattled. Sehwag on the charge ...

Free hit coming up ...

2.6

Umar Gul to Sehwag, no run, Sehwag its on the back foot and tries to heave the short of a length ball over the leg side, he mis-hits in into his pad. This game has burst into life in this over. Pakistan need to control the damage.

3.1

3.3

4.4

Umar Gul to Sehwag, FOUR, that's a rubbish half-volley on middle and leg I'm afraid. Sehwag whips it through midwicket with a fearful lash of his wrists

4.5

Umar Gul to Sehwag, no run, there's the first bouncer! And Sehwag ducks under it.

"The last time bouncers were tried ... it went over third man for six. I don't think bouncing these two out will work. Just good out swing bowling is needed," says Arvind.

4.6

Umar Gul to Sehwag, FOUR, that's another bouncer, perhaps a touch slower? It was wider outside off though and Sehwag reached for it and lashed it over point ... Pakistan on a leather hunt

5.3

Wahab Riaz to Tendulkar, 1 leg bye, pitches outside leg this time and allows Tendulkar to nudge the ball off his thigh towards fine leg

5.4

Wahab Riaz to Sehwag, no run, Wahab tests Sehwag with the short ball, Sehwag ducks again. The short ball got him out against Australia ...

5.5

Wahab Riaz to Sehwag, OUT, Taufel has given Sehwag out and he's asked for a review against the lbw decision immediately. He didn't even check with Tendulkar. Brilliant decision from Taufel. That ball pitched just in line with leg stump, short of a length, and skidded on to Sehwag, beating the batsman's attempted flick off the back foot. That ball didn't bounce as much as Sehwag thought it would. He was on his toes playing the shot. The only doubt was whether it pitched in line, it did. Pakistan are ecstatic.

6.6

Umar Gul to Tendulkar, 3 runs, Tendulkar pushes the length ball through cover and calls for two initially, he'll get three

"Sehwag should have checked with SRT before going for the referral. Too big a match for referral to be wasted," says Keith.

G Gambhir    2* (3b)      Wahab Riaz    1-0-1-1

7.1

Wahab Riaz to Tendulkar, FOUR, Tendulkar's bat is rather awesome. He just clipped a short of a length ball from outside off between the fielders at mid-on and midwicket. It didn't look like it had enough legs to reach the boundary but it grew plenty on the way there

End of over 8 (8 runs) India 65/1 (RR: 8.12)

Wahab Riaz to Tendulkar, no run, defended on the off side off the back foot

9.5

Wahab Riaz to Tendulkar, no run, good length ball on off and middle, defended on the front foot towards the off

Early days yet but Madhu says, "Pakistan have successfully chased 300-plus targets on four occasions against India. The highest target chased is 322 in Mohali in 2007."

10.4

Saeed Ajmal to Tendulkar, no run, lbw! Ian Gould raises the finger and Tendulkar wants a review. There's only one review left. That pitches in line, hits him in line but the replays show that it is likely to miss leg stump. And listen to that roar in Mohali. That looked close. Tendulkar bats on ...

10.5

Saeed Ajmal to Tendulkar, no run, is he stumped this time? Tendulkar lunged forward to play the ball and was beaten by the doosra outside off stump. Akmal whipped off the bails in a flash. Tendulkar's leg had left the ground for a second. Replays show that he might have got it down just in time. Very very close call and Tendulkar bats on again ...

Pakistan are pumped here ...

The ball has been changed, and Hafeez will have first use of it

34.1

Mohammad Hafeez to Tendulkar, no run, nice and full, not much flight but a hint of drift. Tapped to square leg

34.2

Mohammad Hafeez to Tendulkar, no run, Tendulkar shuffles down the wicket this time, but Hafeez spots him coming and re-adjusts the length

34.3

Mohammad Hafeez to Tendulkar, 2 runs, whipped out to deep midwicket with flair, Tendulkar raising the right leg off the ground as he plays the shot. There's a fielder out there

34.4

Mohammad Hafeez to Tendulkar, 2 runs, arrowed in flat on off stump, Tendulkar makes room and slaps it out to deep cover

34.5

Mohammad Hafeez to Tendulkar, no run, again Tendulkar dances down, slightly misjudging the line to be struck on the pad ... a very optimistic appeal from Hafeez is quickly turned down

34.6

Mohammad Hafeez to Tendulkar, 1 run, dropped again! What on earth is happening out there? Tendulkar tried a whip-pull to midwicket, popping the ball in the air ... Umar Akmal is there for the shot at a wide midwicket, times the jump and gets both hands to it, and it pops out! Hafeez is fuming, Afridi is utterly disconsolate. That's the fourth drop!

36.1

Saeed Ajmal to Tendulkar, no run, doosra, Tendulkar flashes and a thick edge bounces to the man at short third man

36.2

Saeed Ajmal to Tendulkar, no run, offspinner this time, flicked to backward square leg

36.3

Saeed Ajmal to Tendulkar, 1 run, Tendulkar presents the full face of the bat on the drive to send the ball to long-off

Slip in place for Dhoni

36.4

Saeed Ajmal to Dhoni, no run, nudged back towards the bowler with no great intent

36.5

Saeed Ajmal to Dhoni, 1 run, worked slightly wider this time, and as midwicket runs across there's time for a quick single

36.6

Saeed Ajmal to Tendulkar, OUT, finally, they've held one! Sachin falls. And guess who's there to take the catch? Afridi drops to his left to hold onto a stinging drive at short extra cover. 'If you want the job done right, then do it yourself,' he's thinking. Possibly. Relief flows visibly over the Pakistanis as they gather at the fall of the wicket. Plenty of smiles out there now

37.3

Shahid Afridi to Raina, no run, that looked like an offspinner, pitching outside leg and turning in towards the pad

37.4

Shahid Afridi to Raina, no run, Raina attempts a little glance to short fine leg, but the fielder runs round in good time to stop the single

This is the first time since the second over that the run rate has dipped below five

38.1

Saeed Ajmal to Raina, 2 runs, chipped in the air to wide long-on

38.2

Saeed Ajmal to Raina, 1 run, a slightly wild swipe across the line from Raina, the ball was a little short but not short enough for that shot. Just the single as the ball rolls out to midwicket. The odd one is definitely keeping low for the spinners

38.3

Saeed Ajmal to Dhoni, 1 run, Dhoni leans well forward and allows ball to hit bat, angling the blade to get the ball to short fine leg. Good one-day batting, and another quick single

Shahid Afridi to Dhoni, 1 run, Afridi attacks the stumps, Dhoni stretches down the wicket and drives cautiously into the off side

39.2

Shahid Afridi to Raina, 2 runs, this has been a confident start from Raina, and now he picks the half volley and whips it out to deep midwicket for two more

39.3

Shahid Afridi to Raina, no run, Raina is down on bended knee to drive, but he picks out the man at cover

39.4

Shahid Afridi to Raina, 1 run, again this looked like the offspinner rather than the wrong 'un, turning across the left-hander as he flicks square

39.5

Shahid Afridi to Dhoni, no run, huge appeal from Afridi as Dhoni lunges forward and is struck on the pad! Taufel says no ... but Afridi asks for the review all the same. But he's going to be disappointed, as there's a huge inside edge. A wasted review. Trust the Taufel!

39.6

40.1

Saeed Ajmal to Dhoni, 1 run, a thick inside edge ricochets off the pad and rolls to midwicket, allowing them to steal a quick single

40.2

Saeed Ajmal to Raina, 1 run, Raina gets back and across and glances to Afridi's right at short fine leg

40.3

Saeed Ajmal to Dhoni, 1 run, Dhoni doesn't look to be in the best of nick! He thrusts the bat out more in hope than anything else, not sure he's picking Ajmal's variations. A leading edge loops into space at cover, and they get a single. "Scratchy, like chalk on a chalkboard," says George Binoy

Wahab Riaz comes back. He's bowled a couple of really impressive spells today

41.1

Wahab Riaz to Dhoni, no run, gosh, an ugly jab bobbles into the covers, feet and hands going everywhere

41.2

Wahab Riaz to Dhoni, 1 run, edged and dropped! Kamran it is, a thick edge flies to his right, hitting the fingers and bouncing out. That was a really tough chance, there's no slip in so he's got to go for it, he stretches into the dive ... but can't hold on!

41.3

Wahab Riaz to Raina, 1 run, back of a length and rising, Raina gets across to off and glances off the hip

That's six catches dropped now. Stunning

41.4

Wahab Riaz to Dhoni, OUT, well, that's one way to take the faulty catching out of the equation! Dhoni is rapped on the pad as he shuffles to off, huge appeal and Taufel has given him out! Dhoni wants a review though ... but it's not going to help, three reds as it pitches and hits him in line, definitely hitting the stumps and that's gone. Wahab Riaz to Harbhajan Singh, no run, that's better, nicely straight this time to draw a defensive stroke from Harbhajan

43.3

Wahab Riaz to Harbhajan Singh, 1 wide, Kamran saves runs! Again Riaz sends one down the leg side, this one went even further and was heading for four wides ... until Kamran leapt athletically to his left to stop it one-handed

43.4

Wahab Riaz to Raina, no run, edged and dropping short of Kamran! This one kept low, touched the edge and dropped a metre in front of the keeper ... who is perhaps a little deep with the ball keeping low fairly often now

43.5

Wahab Riaz to Raina, 1 run, Riaz attacks the stumps, with a hint of shape through the air, but Raina meets the ball with the full face of the blade to send it down to long-on

43.6

Wahab Riaz to Harbhajan Singh, no run, Riaz steams in from round the wicket to Bhajji, banging this one in fairly short. It spits up, going with the angle towards leg stump and strikes the batsman on the hip, looping towards short fine leg. Bhajji was looking for the paddle-pull but couldn't connect

The Batting Powerplay is taken. Who is going to bowl? Ajmal had the ball in hand... and yes he'll bowl.

44.1

Saeed Ajmal to Raina, 1 run, Ajmal comes round the wicket, firing one flat at the toes and Raina flicks to midwicket ... he wants two, but just the single

Now what's happened here? Raina dropped his bat just as Ajmal got to the crease, the bowler still delivered it and Harbhajan just hung the bat out as dead ball was called

44.2

Saeed Ajmal to Harbhajan Singh, no run, Harbhajan sweeps, it comes off the glove and balloons to gully ... no fielder is close enough

44.3

Saeed Ajmal to Harbhajan Singh, no run, flapped back to the bowler

44.4

Saeed Ajmal to Harbhajan Singh, FOUR, this time he connects with the sweep! That's hit uppishly but well-placed, beating short fine leg and deep square. First boundary for the best part of 15 overs

44.5

Saeed Ajmal to Harbhajan Singh, 2 wides, this'll be wides, speared down the leg side, the ball strikes Kamran's glove and rolls to fine leg. Ajmal isn't happy

44.5

Saeed Ajmal to Raina, no run, good ball! Arrowed in very full outside off, a great yorker and it slips right under Raina's bat. Too wide to be of danger to the stumps, but it's a dot ball

44.6

Saeed Ajmal to Raina, 1 run, Raina skips down the wicket to take the ball on the full and whips out to deep midwicket

Gul to bowl in the Powerplay. He can be very dangerous at the death, but Raina showed against Australia what he can do

45.1

Umar Gul to Raina, FOUR, lifted majestically down the ground! Dead straight, powerfully hit. It was a length ball from Gul, and Raina got nicely underneath it

45.2

Umar Gul to Raina, 1 wide, this time he aims for the yorker, but it slips down the leg side. A hint of wobble through the air, that delivery would be dangerous if he could get it on target

45.2

Umar Gul to Raina, no run, full toss this time, and Raina is taken a little by surprise, driving back to the bowler. Gul hasn't been quite at his best today, but a low full toss is at least better than a length ball at this stage

45.3

Umar Gul to Raina, FOUR, hmm, or maybe not! Another full toss from Gul but this time it's dished up wide of off. Raina drives, picking the gap in the field to pick up four

Change in the field, man goes out to the cover point boundary ... Third man is in. Long-off also goes out

45.4

Umar Gul to Raina, 1 run, a better ball, but the damage has already been done in this over. With the field set back on the off side, Raina eases a very full ball to long-off for one

"What an earth is he doing?" screams Imran. "Has Hul just found out he has indian family lineage and wants play for india....Where is the yorkers gone!!?" Well, we all share the same lineage eventually.

A suspiciously-named Circ Magnica has some breaking news: "This just in from secret but reliable sources: Sania Mirza to play a revenge tennis match against Shoaib Malik in case of an (now likely) Indian loss!"

45.5

Umar Gul to Harbhajan Singh, FOUR, four runs to fine leg! Gul is losing it here, another full toss and this time it's misdirected down the leg side, a deflection off the bat and it beats Kamran

"If Raina was a Taylor, that 2nd ball full toss would have disappeared across the Pakistan border," chuckles Kishan.

45.6

Umar Gul to Harbhajan Singh, no run, dot ball to finish, very full and reversing to beat the bat, but wide of off. India really needed an over like that

46.3

Saeed Ajmal to Harbhajan Singh, no run, well, Harbhajan wasn't picked the doosra when he first came in but he seems to be doing so now. Defended

Ha, what has Ajmal done here? He trots to the crease, then stops as he gathers and gives Harbhajan a smile. A touch of gamesmanship, but it's all in good fun.

46.4

Saeed Ajmal to Harbhajan Singh, OUT, doosra, missed and stumped! Harbhajan jumped down the wicket and aimed for the straight boundary, but ran straight past the ball and is easily stumped by several metres. Ajmal the clear winner in the battle between the two offspinners

47.2

Wahab Riaz to Khan, no run, hmm, interesting shot from Zaheer, he clears the left leg and then flings the bat out, apparently with his eyes shut. Doesn't get close to laying bat on ball

47.3

Wahab Riaz to Khan, 2 runs, well, same shot this time he manages to get bat on ball but that is a shocking effort! The ball loops up, and Zaheer is lucky to survive as it drops safely in the deep near cover. They're back for the second

47.4

47.4

47.5

Wahab Riaz to Khan, FOUR, this is comedic stuff! How has he hit that for four? Riaz fires one in full and fast, and it's a case of ball hitting bat, a leading edge loops over the infield and rolls to the wide third man boundary. Well, they're runs no matter how you get them

Long-off, long-on and deep square leg are on the boundary

48.4

Umar Gul to Khan, 1 run, Zaheer slams a full toss down the ground ... and another great piece of fielding from Pakistan! Younis Khan it is this time, sliding across from long-off to save runs. Still, 250 up for India

And Raina asks for a change of bat now

48.5

Umar Gul to Raina, 2 runs, yet another full toss, Raina drives along the ground to wide long-off ... they take on the fielder's arm, Umar Akmal it is out there, and they're back for the second!

48.6

Umar Gul to Raina, FOUR, shot! Raina walks across to off stump, and picks a half-volley up and over fine leg ... the fielder is inside the circle there, and once it was past him it was four

49.5

Wahab Riaz to Nehra, OUT, Nehra's been watching too much of Zaheer! A big swing, nowhere near it ... but Raina calls him through for one! Kamran throws to Riaz, who runs back and takes the bails off, Nehra doesn't bother to dive, easily run out

49.6

Wahab Riaz to Raina, 2 runs, powerfully drive to wide long-off, but Ajmal sprints across and slides, cutting the ball off just inside the boundary to keep them to two

Well, fairly manic stuff out there at the end but India will be fairly happy to have reached 260 after losing their way a touch in the middle overs. Tendulkar will have to wait for that 100th ton, but top-scored with 85. He shouldn't have got nearly that many, of course, but was gifted life after life by Pakistan. There was a danger that the wheels could come off completely for Pakistan, but Wahab Riaz responded with the performance of his career, bowling with vim and vigour with the old ball to claw Pakistan back into the game with five wickets. What an emotionally draining first half it's been, this game is certainly living up to the hype! It's still poised on a knife-edge, both teams will believe they can win this from this position. Phew! Join us in 20 minutes or so, and in the meantime check out Brydon Coverdale's bulletin to be filled in on all the thrills and spills (there were plenty of both) in the first half of this semi-final.

"260 is a good score against Pakistan," writes Bachi. "But with Nehra in your team you might want to be little more cautious."

I'm not sure about Ankit's maths here: "260 is not a bad score actually. Add 10 to it because of the pressure of a World Cup semi-final. Add another 15 to it because India's fielding will save that many. And add another 15 to it because of the pressure of both country's Prime Minister's watching. So it all adds up to a total of 300! Well done, India."
