ICC Cricket World Cup - 2nd semi final

India v Pakistan

India won by 29 runs

1835: The chase will get underway in about 10 minutes from now. Pakistan would have taken 260 at the start of the day. India would have taken 260 after they imploded through some super ordinary cricket. Riaz and the Pakistan spinners were spectacular. India are lucky to have so many to defend for Pakistan's catching and Umar Gul's bowling was atrocious.

Over to Veera, who will take over at the start of the chase.

Thanks George.

Hussain: "@Ankit, you forgot to add 50 runs as a peace gesture. Dude its 260, why are you adding runs to it!"

Some bad news: From the Dawn newspaper: "Famous Pakistani comedian Liaquat Soldier passed away after a heart attack in Karachi on Wednesday. He was participating in a live television show in a special transmission for the World Cup semifinal between India and Pakistan when he suffered a heart attack and passed away while being transported to a hospital."

Hello everyone, good to be back. This match is poised on the knife-edge, it could easily go either way from here. With one over to go before the ball is changed, Dhoni hands the ball to Harbhajan Singh. He'll come round the wicket

33.1

Harbhajan Singh to Umar Akmal, OUT, bowled 'im! Bhajji strikes straight away, it wasn't the doosra - more of an arm ball - but Umar played it horribly, neither forward nor back and swishing hopefully through the line of the ball. It nipped past the bat and clattered into the off stump

34.1

Patel to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, legcutter, defended carefully towards cover point

"That is real excitement from Dhoni after Umar Akmal's wicket. You dont see it very often." Yes Ravishankar, his jump was sping-loaded. And rightly too, it was a huge wicket.

34.2

Patel to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, this one nips back in off the seam, again Misbah can't get it away. He can barely get it off the square at the moment!

"Just went fora loo break, and Umar Akmal out !! Should go 5 more times in next half an hour," says Paresh. I suggest beer.

34.3

Patel to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, nice and straight from Munaf, good length too, and Misbah taps to midwicket

No problem with dew, by the way

34.4

Patel to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, a touch fuller from Munaf, closer to off stump, and all Misbah can do is tap it back to the bowler

34.5

Patel to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, Munaf aims for the yorker, but it slips out a very low, dipping full toss outside off. Misbah jams the bat down to get it to third man

"Why hasn't Afridi gone in instead of Razzaq? Pakistan needs to pick up their run rate and who is a bigger run getter than Boom Boom? Plus he is captain - at this point he needs to show leadership and bring some calm and runs to this show." It's a question many of you are asking, Amanda. I guess Afridi hasn't been in good touch with the bat for the last couple of years.

34.6

Patel to Abdul Razzaq, 1 run, Munaf goes full again, this time he slips towards leg stump however and Razzaq tucks him easily through square leg

End of over 35 (2 runs) Pakistan 146/5 (115 runs required from 15 overs, RR: 4.17, RRR: 7.66)

36.2

Patel to Abdul Razzaq, 1 wide, Razzaq steps to leg, giving himself room, and swishes wildly outside off ... the ball cuts away to beat him. Taufel's called that wide, but it's a bit harsh

Incredibly, that's the first extra of the innings! Disciplined stuff from India's bowlers

36.2

Patel to Abdul Razzaq, OUT, gone! Bowled! Munaf sends down a slower ball, another legcutter, and Razzaq plays down completely the wrong line to lose his off stump. India surge ahead with that wicket, they've got control now.

Cometh the hour, cometh the Boom Boom. His team need something special

36.3

Patel to Shahid Afridi, no run, full on off stump, cutting away and keeping low. Afridi taps to cover and looks for a single - but there is none

"Folks, before drawing any conclusions based on the high required run rate, do remember that there is a small matter of a batting powerplay looming around for the Indians." Fair point Ankit, surely Pakistan need to take it now? Maybe give Afridi a few deliveries, but he's normally out by then.

36.4

Patel to Shahid Afridi, 1 run, flicked uppishly down to long-on, and he's off the mark. Plenty of bottom hand in the shot

36.5

Patel to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, Misbah walks into a defensive stroke, dropping the ball towards point

36.6

Patel to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, this pitch continues to get slower and lower, Misbah was too soon into the drive here but the ball is chipped safely down to long on for one

"Oh Man Paresh! Are you drinking lot of beer!! Razzaq is out....thanks man," says Raj. And about a thousand other people.

End of over 37 (4 runs) Pakistan 152/6 (109 runs required from 13 overs, RR: 4.10, RRR: 8.38)
Misbah-ul-Haq    13* (36b)      MM Patel    9-1-33-2
Shahid Afridi    1* (2b)      Yuvraj Singh    8-1-37-2

37.1

Yuvraj Singh to Misbah-ul-Haq, 2 runs, driven in the air once again, but threading the gap at cover ... and they're back for a second run

37.2

Yuvraj Singh to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, flighted up on off stump, Misbah stretches out and unfurls a forward defensive that would not be out of place in a Test match

37.3

Yuvraj Singh to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, this one rushes on with the arm, Misbah nudges in front of square on the leg side for a single

"I am sitting here in cold Boston forgetting to swtich on the room heater overnight. The tension in this match is enough to keep me warm." Haha, good stuff Suhasa.

37.4

Yuvraj Singh to Shahid Afridi, FOUR, thrashed through cover! Immense power in the shot, it was pitched up and Afridi scythed through the line to send the ball screaming to the cover boundary

37.5

Yuvraj Singh to Shahid Afridi, 2 runs, full and on the toes, whipped through midwicket

37.6

Yuvraj Singh to Shahid Afridi, 2 runs, again this one goes on with the arm from round the wicket, Afridi steps back in his crease and works to midwicket ... he's initially hesitant about a second run, but some slovenly fielding allows it

End of over 38 (11 runs) Pakistan 163/6 (98 runs required from 12 overs, RR: 4.28, RRR: 8.16)
Shahid Afridi    9* (5b 1x4)      Yuvraj Singh    9-1-48-2
Misbah-ul-Haq    16* (39b)      MM Patel    9-1-33-2

Another change - Zak is back

38.1

Khan to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, good start, he rushes in and hits a good length on off stump, beating the outside edge as Misbah tries to slash to third man

38.2

Khan to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, straighter this time, on a length and Misbah defends with minimal foot movement

Mid-on is up, long-off, deep point, third man, fine leg and deep square leg are out

38.3

Khan to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, fuller, driven down to long-off

"Afridi is the key. If he gets out cheaply, India will win," suggests Sanjay doing a remarkable Shastri impression.

38.4

Khan to Shahid Afridi, 1 wide, Zaheer is going to attack Afridi's stumps here. This one is slightly off line, but the intent is there

38.4

Khan to Shahid Afridi, 2 runs, slammed down the ground, but the fielder on the boundary sprints round to cut it off

38.5

Khan to Shahid Afridi, no run, slower ball, the cutter, and it's chopped to cover point with little timing

Afridi eyes up the leg side boundary ...

38.6

Khan to Shahid Afridi, 1 run, another slower ball, this time Afridi finds a gap on the off side for a single

End of over 39 (5 runs) Pakistan 168/6 (93 runs required from 11 overs, RR: 4.30, RRR: 8.45)
Shahid Afridi    12* (8b 1x4)      Z Khan    6-0-32-1
Misbah-ul-Haq    17* (42b)      Yuvraj Singh    9-1-48-2

Yuvraj continues

39.1

Yuvraj Singh to Shahid Afridi, 1 run, Afridi jumps down the track, hitting the ball on the full toss down to long-on

39.2

Yuvraj Singh to Misbah-ul-Haq, FOUR, where has that come from? Misbah reverse sweeps, beating a diving short third man, and picks up his first boundary!

39.3

Yuvraj Singh to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, again the reverse sweep, finer this time, but short third man zips across to cut it off

"Someone forgot to tell Misbah-ul-Haq that he is playing in the semi-final of the world cup ODI. He's got the mindset of trying to save a test match in the final session of the fifth day." Indeed Doug, looks like he's playing for the draw. Making up for the drop catch earlier that's for sure.

39.4

Yuvraj Singh to Shahid Afridi, 1 run, Is that out? If it is it is a stunning piece of fielding from Ashish Nehra! Afridi pulled in the air out to deep midwicket, he charged across and leapt ... India celebrate, but Ashish immediately says he's not sure. And they go upstairs ... Yep, that's bounced just in front of him. Still a wonderful effort in the field from someone who's not usually known for it

Nehra has hurt his finger as well, and is getting it strapped by the team physio. It's his right hand, so shouldn't affect his ability to bowl

Mayur: "3 tabs or 4. should i chat with someone on gtalk or not. what to do... get up? fool around with housework, or sit and watch? just cricinfo or streaming? watch or drive to work? keep feet on wooden plank of bed or on carpet... ah so many questions..."

39.5

Yuvraj Singh to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, nudged into the leg side

39.6

Yuvraj Singh to Shahid Afridi, 1 run, Nehra again! Afridi slashes, the ball flies off a thick edge and bounces away towards third man ... but Nehra dives across at short third man and keeps them to one

End of over 40 (9 runs) Pakistan 177/6 (84 runs required from 60 balls, RR: 4.42, RRR: 8.40)
Shahid Afridi    15* (11b 1x4)      Yuvraj Singh    10-1-57-2
Misbah-ul-Haq    23* (45b 1x4)      Z Khan    6-0-32-1

40.1

Khan to Shahid Afridi, 1 run, inswinging yorker! Well, not quite, a touch too full, and is whipped behind square on the leg side. Definite movement through the air though, back in to the right-hander

Zaheer will come round the wicket to Misbah

40.2

Khan to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, short on middle and off, Misbah steps back and pulls, turning his wrists on the shot to keep it down

40.3

Khan to Shahid Afridi, no run, again Nehra does the job in the field! Afridi slams a length delivery to mid-on, Nehra has a split second to move to his left and does so, stopping it. The ball is following him around!

40.4

Khan to Shahid Afridi, 1 run, low full toss, Afridi chips it up and over midwicket, and it falls safely in front of the fielder out there

40.5

Khan to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, very full, and straight too. Misbah drives straight back to the bowler

Afridi and Sehwag have a quick chat ... all smiles though, on both sides

40.6

Khan to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, this looked slower through the air, dipping on the batsman at the last moment. Misbah nudges through square leg for a single

End of over 41 (4 runs) Pakistan 181/6 (80 runs required from 54 balls, RR: 4.41, RRR: 8.88)
Misbah-ul-Haq    25* (48b 1x4)      Z Khan    7-0-36-1
Shahid Afridi    17* (14b 1x4)      Yuvraj Singh    10-1-57-2

Harbhajan comes back. Pakistan need 80 off 54

41.1

Harbhajan Singh to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, Bhajji comes round the wicket, Misbah nurdles straight to the fielder on the leg side and for some reason both he and Afridi look eager for a single. Absolutely no chance

"I am confident of Afridi," starts Sathish Rao. So far, so normal. "He surely goes to dressing room in 2 overs because fresh chicken is waiting for him" Bah?

41.2

Harbhajan Singh to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, glanced very fine down the leg side, short fine runs round to keep them to one

41.3

Harbhajan Singh to Shahid Afridi, 2 runs, Bhajji switches to over the wicket for Afridi, who dances down the track and slaps a full toss down to wide long-on

41.4

Harbhajan Singh to Shahid Afridi, no run, fired down full and flat outside off, Afridi leaves alone, perhaps hoping for a wide ... that was well within the line though

41.5

Harbhajan Singh to Shahid Afridi, OUT, gone! Harbhajan sends down a high full toss, Afridi attempts to smash it baseball-style down the ground but the ball takes the top edge and swirls up for cover to take an easy catch. The captain departs, he had to go for his shots but couldn't execute that one too well. This is India's game now

Shahid Afridi c Sehwag b Harbhajan Singh 19 (25m 17b 1x4 0x6) SR: 111.76

Harbhajan's celebration to that wicket was epic. A lengthy roar, mouth wide open. Surprised a bug didn't fly in there, there are plenty buzzing around under the lights! In comes Wahab Riaz. He was a hero with the ball, and now his team need a miracle from him with the bat

41.6

Harbhajan Singh to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, full and straight, pushed carefully into the leg side

End of over 42 (3 runs) Pakistan 184/7 (77 runs required from 48 balls, RR: 4.38, RRR: 9.62)
Misbah-ul-Haq    26* (51b 1x4)      Harbhajan Singh    9-0-36-2
Wahab Riaz    0* (0b)      Z Khan    7-0-36-1

Ashish Nehra comes back. He looked a changed man in the field for that 10-minute spell. Can he close out the game with the ball? Riaz on strike

42.1

Nehra to Wahab Riaz, no run, past the outside edge! Suddenly Nehra's found a bit more zip off the wicket, that could well be his fastest ball of the evening

42.2

Nehra to Wahab Riaz, no run, Riaz thrusts the bat out, looking for a single to gully, but backward point cuts it off

42.3

Nehra to Wahab Riaz, 1 run, just short of a good length, Riaz paddle-pulls out to Tendulkar at deep midwicket

42.4

Nehra to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, whipped off the pads down to fine leg

42.5

Nehra to Wahab Riaz, FOUR, Riaz finds the boundary! Unorthodox but effective. He backs away to leg, Nehra follows him and he's cramped for room but gets a good connection on a bottom-handed swipe that races to wide long-on

42.6

Nehra to Wahab Riaz, 1 wide, speared down the leg side by Nehra, that's a wide

"Seems Misbah will do 2007 WC... Make India win," says Abhisek.

42.6

Nehra to Wahab Riaz, 1 run, cutter from Nehra, and it's a good one! The ball grips and turns from leg to off, taking the leading edge of Riaz's bat and rolling into the covers

End of over 43 (8 runs) Pakistan 192/7 (69 runs required from 42 balls, RR: 4.46, RRR: 9.85)
Wahab Riaz    6* (5b 1x4)      A Nehra    8-0-30-0
Misbah-ul-Haq    27* (52b 1x4)      Harbhajan Singh    9-0-36-2

43.1

Harbhajan Singh to Wahab Riaz, 1 run, Harbhajan comes round the wicket and misdirects one fast and flat down the leg side ... but Riaz gets bat on it, so it's just a single to short fine leg. That could well have been five wides

"Once again, no SRT century and India does well," observes Pradeep, dangerously.

43.2

Harbhajan Singh to Misbah-ul-Haq, FOUR, another reverse sweep from Misbah, and he places it perfectly! He used the extra pace as Harbhajan fired down another quicker one, getting it fine of the man at short third man

43.3

Harbhajan Singh to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, worked off the pad to short fine leg, and they race through for a quick single

43.4

Harbhajan Singh to Wahab Riaz, no run, nudged to midwicket, Misbah charges out loooking for a single and Wahab sends him back just in time!

43.5

Harbhajan Singh to Wahab Riaz, no run, hmm, Harbhajan is lucky to get away with this one. It was really speared flat again, but well wide of off. Riaz slashes and doesn't connect, and that could've been called wide. Borderline

43.6

Harbhajan Singh to Wahab Riaz, 1 run, Riaz runs one down to short third man, and they steal a quick single

Harbhajan leaves the field after completing his 10th over

End of over 44 (7 runs) Pakistan 199/7 (62 runs required from 36 balls, RR: 4.52, RRR: 10.33)
Wahab Riaz    8* (9b 1x4)      Harbhajan Singh    10-0-43-2
Misbah-ul-Haq    32* (54b 2x4)      A Nehra    8-0-30-0

44.1

Nehra to Wahab Riaz, no run, a very full delivery outside off bursts past the outside edge as Riaz tries to drive

44.2

Nehra to Wahab Riaz, no run, what is it with the left-arm quicks today? Riaz takes his cue from the Zaheer/Nehra school of batting, backing away to be beaten flailing outside off

Mid-on is up, long-off, deep cover, third man, fine leg and deep midwicket are on the boundary

44.3

Nehra to Wahab Riaz, no run, bouncer! Again Riaz was making room, Nehra followed him with the bouncer and he was forced to duck

Phani is nipping the SRT debate in the bud. "@Pradeep - Totally disagree with you. India won the match 33 times when Sachin had hit a century and lost only 15 times when he crossed 100."

44.4

Nehra to Wahab Riaz, no run, another dot ball! Riaz clears the left leg, Nehra hurls down a low, dipping full toss wide of off and it slips past the bat

44.5

Nehra to Wahab Riaz, OUT, there's another one! Full and straight, Riaz swings mightily across the line but all he can do is send the ball straight up in the air, an easy catch for Tendulkar at cover. India are just two wickets away from a World Cup final. Pakistan are still alive, but only just. The pressure really told on Riaz there, all those dot balls made him feel as though he absolutely had to hit the boundary

Wahab Riaz c Tendulkar b Nehra 8 (16m 14b 1x4 0x6) SR: 57.14

44.6

Nehra to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, low full toss, Misbah cracks it to mid-on and they charge through for one

"If anyone deserved wicket today it is surely Nehra. Superb bowling Nehra. Take a bow. People will say another master stroke from Dhoni." I suppose they'll have to, Swaraj.

End of over 45 (1 run) Pakistan 200/8 (61 runs required from 30 balls, RR: 4.44, RRR: 12.20)
Misbah-ul-Haq    33* (55b 2x4)      A Nehra    9-0-31-1
Umar Gul    0* (0b)      Harbhajan Singh    10-0-43-2

Here's the Batting Powerplay, and it comes with India in almost complete control of the game. Misbah is Pakistan's last hope, but he doesn't look like he's about to explode into a flurry of boundaries ...

45.1

Khan to Misbah-ul-Haq, FOUR, ha! He's not listening to me. Zaheer sends down a leg-stump half-volley and Misbah clips him neatly to the square leg boundary

45.2

Khan to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, slower ball, on a length and outside off. Misbah taps it towards point and they scramble through for one

Two runs a ball from here on in, is what Pakistan need

45.3

Khan to Umar Gul, 1 run, Gul guides down to third man to get off the mark

45.4

Khan to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, full and fast outside off, driven with very little timing at all ... but that gives them the chance to sprint through for another

45.5

Khan to Umar Gul, 1 run, Gul gets too far underneath a low full toss, chipping it in the air to midwicket ... but it falls safely in no-man's land

45.6

Khan to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, whipped powerfully off the pads, but straight to Raina at midwicket ... Misbah wanted one all the same, but Gul sent him back. Raina's throw is just wide, and would've caught him short!

"Even I, a West Indian fan, is frustrated with the stupidity of Pakistan not taking the batting powerplay around the 38-43 overs period. I can't imagine what the Pakistani supporters are doing now," says Dave Simpson.

End of over 46 (8 runs) Pakistan 208/8 (53 runs required from 24 balls, RR: 4.52, RRR: 13.25)
Misbah-ul-Haq    39* (59b 3x4)      Z Khan    8-0-44-1
Umar Gul    2* (2b)      A Nehra    9-0-31-1

Nehra to bowl his last over. Misbah asks for a change of gloves. Long-off, third man and midwicket are out on the boundary, everyone else in the ring

46.1

Nehra to Umar Gul, OUT, gone! Full, swinging, and Gul is struck flush on the foot as he swipes across the line. He asks for a review but to no avail, that's stone dead. Gul's unhappy day comes to an end. India are just one wicket away from a dream final

Umar Gul lbw b Nehra 2 (9m 3b 0x4 0x6) SR: 66.66

46.2

Nehra to Saeed Ajmal, no run, full, hooping through the air around off stump and it's tapped sheepishly to point

46.3

Nehra to Saeed Ajmal, no run, back of a length, too quick for Ajmal and he's late on the pull. The ball goes nowhere

"@Dave: Banging our heads against the wall and tearing our hair out." Poor Talya.

46.4

Nehra to Saeed Ajmal, 1 run, full again, the ball takes a thick edge as Ajmal tries to angle it down and rolls away through gully

46.5

Nehra to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, Misbah opens his stance and pushes to mid-on, rushing across for a single

46.6

Nehra to Saeed Ajmal, no run, high full toss outside off, Ajmal runs it down to third man but Misbah says no to the single - he's got to keep the strike if Pakistan's slim hopes are to be kept alive

The end of Nehra's contribution with the ball, good effort from him

End of over 47 (2 runs) Pakistan 210/9 (51 runs required from 18 balls, RR: 4.46, RRR: 17.00)
Saeed Ajmal    1* (4b)      A Nehra    10-0-33-2
Misbah-ul-Haq    40* (60b 3x4)      Z Khan    8-0-44-1

47.1

Khan to Misbah-ul-Haq, 5 wides, well, Zaheer's completely lost the radar here. Misbah backed away to leg and Zaheer tried to follow him but he went too far, the ball shooting well down the leg side and beating a diving Dhoni

47.1

Khan to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, full and straight, Misbah steps away and slams it straight to mid-off. He's got to hit the ball in the air, there aren't many gaps along the ground

47.2

Khan to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, that could've been it! Misbah steps away, Zaheer follows him with a length delivery and he still goes for the cut, chopping it down just past his stumps

47.3

Khan to Misbah-ul-Haq, FOUR, full toss outside off, and Misbah puts it away through cover. Too late?

Deep cover goes out now

47.4

Khan to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, length delivery, slapped out to the man who's just been placed at deep cover. He turns the single down

47.5

Khan to Misbah-ul-Haq, FOUR, slower ball from Zaheer, Misbah picks it and lifts it sweetly over mid-on, four more! Is there still a chance here?

"If there is anyone out there, who is still wondering why India and Sri Lanka played each other so many times in the last 2 years, they have their answers now. It was all practice for the BIG GAME on April 2, 2011 :)" Finally Shrikanth has unravelled the mystery.

47.6

Khan to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, tip-and-run from Misbah, he pushes to mid-off and they charge through ... he's home, just!

End of over 48 (14 runs) Pakistan 224/9 (37 runs required from 12 balls, RR: 4.66, RRR: 18.50)
Misbah-ul-Haq    49* (66b 5x4)      Z Khan    9-0-58-1
Saeed Ajmal    1* (4b)      A Nehra    10-0-33-2

37 off 12, surely not? Munaf to bowl

48.1

Patel to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, on a length and straight, Misbah steps to leg and, perhaps undone by the pace of the wicket, can only defend

48.2

Patel to Misbah-ul-Haq, SIX, six! Slammed down the ground, sailing over the boundary. Fifty for Misbah, but there are just too many runs needed now

48.3

Patel to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, Munaf hits a length again, and Misbah can only tap it back to the bowler

48.4

Patel to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, slapped out to deep cover, Misbah is just backing himself to hit boundaries now, again he turns down the single

48.5

Patel to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, Misbah clears the front leg and muscles this to wide long-on, but Raina sprints across to save the boundary ... that's just a single.

48.6

Patel to Saeed Ajmal, no run, Ajmal walks across to off and paddles ... but he can't beat short fine leg! If that had been a boundary ...

End of over 49 (7 runs) Pakistan 231/9 (30 runs required from 6 balls, RR: 4.71, RRR: 30.00)
Saeed Ajmal    1* (5b)      MM Patel    10-1-40-2
Misbah-ul-Haq    56* (71b 5x4 1x6)      Z Khan    9-0-58-1

Zaheer to bowl the final over, and Pakistan need a miracle. India have one foot in the final. Long-on, long-off are back

49.1

Khan to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, drilled down the ground, Misbah turns down the single ... so now he's got to hit every ball for six

Ash: "Misbaha completed 50 and 2000 ODI runs... Hmmm.. Might be he was targetting this"

49.2

Khan to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, full and wide outside off, is that a wide? Swing and a miss from Misbah

49.3

Khan to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, short, pulled and straight to midwicket. The crowd are excited now, they know India are through

49.4

Khan to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, on a length now, heaved across the line and straight to midwicket

The Pakistan players look utterly downcast in the dressing room, the dream is over

49.5

Khan to Misbah-ul-Haq, OUT, there's the game! Misbah swings, the ball goes miles up in the air and lands safely in Kohli's hands at long-on

Misbah-ul-Haq c Kohli b Khan 56 (134m 76b 5x4 1x6) SR: 73.68

India win by 29 runs to reach a dream home final in Mumbai, where they will face Sri Lanka to decide the World Cup! Shahid Afridi leads his team out to shake the hands of the victorious Indians, Pakistan can certainly hold their heads up high after their performances in this tournament. After they breezed through the group stages, with one blip against New Zealand, this was always going to be their biggest challenge. There was so much hype around this game, so much pressure on both teams, but there can be only one winner. Today, it was India.

You can't blame Misbah's slow start for Pakistan's failure. He was always there to hold the batting together while other people hit out around him, but there was nothing substantial from the top order. Where Pakistan must really be disappointed is in their fielding. How much of a difference could it have made if they had held all their catches?

"This was almost like a final, whenever India and Pakistan play each other the pressure is always doubled," says Harbhajan, somewhat superfluously.

Shahid Afridi, the losing captain, can still manage a smile which is nice to see. "First of all I'd like to congratulate the Indian cricket team and the Indian nation for this great victory, and wish them all the best fo the final," he says, magnanimously. "Wahab really bowled well today, but we missed some opportunities. They played better than us. We didn't make partnerships, we played some irresponsible shots, and a partnership was crucial. I want to say sorry to my nation. We tried our level best, and we enjoyed ourselves at this tournament."

M S Dhoni looks very pleased. "We got off to a fantastic start through Sehwag and Sachin. As the game progressed the wicket got slower, and in the middle overs it was difficult to score. Shahid bowled really well, and it was important to just play the bowling with respect. 260 was a good score for this pitch. It was turning, we read the wicket wrong and that's why we went with three seamers, but in the end the seamers bowled really well too. We don't have bowlers who can bowl 140 plus, overall we really on what you might call deception - change of length, line and pace. Zaheer did really well, over the years with experience and in IPL and things like that he's become really smart. We've struggled at times in this tournament, but that's the beauty of this game."

Sachin Tendulkar, who's played in every world cup game between India and Pakistan since 1992, is the Man of the Match. "First of all I'd like to thank everyone here for terrific support, without that this wouldn't have been possible, and not to forget the whole team's efforts today. We just had to make sure we got to a decent, fighting total. When we started I was thinking of 310 to 315, whch was par score for me, but the way the ball started stopping and spinning, something closer to 270 was par.

"Going back to Mumbai for this event is going to be a wonderful occasion, we've got to be calm and focussed. This has been memorable, and something I will cherish all through my life."

And there you have it. Through 48 games, the teams in this World Cup have slowly been whittled down, and now only India and Sri Lanka remain. They will meet in the final, in Mumbai, on Saturday. With so much riding on this game, this was India's biggest challenge of the tournament, and the build-up to the final could well feel low-key in comparison! Read all about today's fantastic game in Brydon Coverdale's bulletin. We've also got no less than two galleries for you to enjoy, one detailing the pre-match excitement and one detailing the thrills and spills of the action on the field. That's all from your commentary team today, from Liam Brickhill, Sriram Veera and George Binoy - as well as the rest of the team behind the scenes - it's goodbye, and see you on Saturday.
