ICC Cricket World Cup - Final

India v Sri Lanka

India won by 6 wickets (with 10 balls remaining)

Game time. The Indian huddle has broken up and they take the field. Dilshan and Tharanga are the openers, and they've been in terrific form. Tharanga to face Zaheer Khan, bowling from over the wicket.

1425 So the national anthems are underway. By the way, this is what Dhoni said last evening. "The only person who can control Sreesanth is Sreesanth," he said. "It is beyond my control and I don't think too much about."

Since 2000, of the eight finals contested, India are yet to win against Sri Lanka while chasing. Two of the matches were abandoned in 2002. India have lost three matches by a margin of 100 runs or more. But that's only history.

1405 A bizarre moment at the toss. Obviously one captain knew that he lost the toss. But because of the confusion he got away with it. Sangakkara would have known what he called, and the coin fell one way. So the captains could have sorted it out. But they didn't. I don't think the match-referee or anyone else knew what was going on. Let the mind games begin ...

"Toss confusion, can India ask for review? Can the third umpire try to lip read the what Sangakara called?" asks Anjali. Let's move on though shall we ....

For updates on this game follow Andy Zaltzman. And for super quick updates from Nitin Sundar, follow ESPNcricinfo

Toss 1400: There's some confusion over who's won the toss. What drama. And they are doing a re-toss. No one heard who called what the first time. Kumar Sangakkara has won the re-toss and Sri Lanka will bat, a massive moment.

Sreesanth is in, playing ahead of R Ashwin for the injured Ashish Nehra. That's the only change India have made from the team that beat Pakistan in the semi-final.

Sri Lanka have made a glut of changes. Mathews, Mendis, Herath and Chamara Silva are out. Perera, Randiv, Kulasekara and Chamara Kapugedera are playing the final. So they've gone for more firepower in their middle order.

How much will be enough? "Anything we get on the board will be good enough," says Sangakkara. That's the best answer to that question I've heard.

I don't know how he manages it so often, here's early bird Mark Kidger: "I think that India will win, but I'd like to see Sri Lanka pull off a surprise after two near misses. People tend to obsess on India, but what Sri Lanka have achieved since 1982 with far fewer resources and with all the problems that the country has had is nothing short of miraculous. Who would begrudge Muttiah Muralitharan a spectacular send-off?"

1355 It's a rather small ground is the Wankhede. Largest boundary is 76 meters, the smallest is 58. Nasser Hussain, on Star Cricket, says the pitch is dying to turn. Ganguly says there isn't enough grass cover, but the little moisture in it will make the new ball seam. You'd want to bat first though. Ganguly reckons India will play three quicks.

Sreesanth is marking his run-up now. So that is a pretty strong indicator ...

1345 The Wankhede has gone from 5% full to 70% full in about an hour. The teams are going through their paces, warming-up, taking catches. The Indians are on the east, the nosier side of the ground. The Sri Lankans on the west, where it's relatively quieter. And between them, there's that bare, brown 22-yard strip both captains will hope to win the toss on. In an ideal world, the pitch will confer no advantage on the team winning the toss. But it isn't an ideal world, is it?

"Zaheer getting his legs stretched so much that if anyone did this to us we would roll over and howl for mummy," says Sharda. Sreesanth is bowling on the practice wickets. Zaheer and Munaf are marking their run-ups on the match pitch. Sreesanth isn't marking his run up yet. The plot thickens.

1330 All the experts on Star Cricket are saying Ashwin ahead of Sreesanth. Dhoni has indicated a preference for three seamers, though, so your guess is as good as mine. I do think Sri Lanka will make a few changes to their team though. Toss in 30 minutes.

1315 Both these teams had a chance to win a World Cup in the 21st century but failed against the might of a marauding Australian batsman. In 2003, Ricky Ponting plundered a century of breathtaking aggressiveness, leaving my common room in college - and common rooms everywhere in India - shell shocked. In 2007, Adam Gilchrist, with squash ball in batting glove, blitzed Sri Lanka with a century more devastating than Ponting's. I never played fantasy cricket after that final.

Australia have faded since.

India are without Ashish Nehra today, he has a broken finger. He only played the semi-final because MS Dhoni misread the Mohali pitch and millions were outraged at R Ashwin's exclusion. Nehra, however, bowled wonderfully. Who will India replace him with? Ashwin (reliable, the pitch will become a turner), Sreesanth (a gamble: match-winner on his day, problem child when it isn't) or Yusuf Pathan (a defensive move, but a possible game-breaker against Sri Lanka's spinners).

Sri Lanka are without Angelo Mathews - canny bowler, calm middle-order bat, and perhaps their second best fielder. Will they play Thisara Perera instead of Mathews? And what about Ajantha Mendis, whom India have played well in ODIs? His place has been talked about as well.

The early indications are that this pitch will turn later in the evening. It looks a typically red Mumbai surface. It hasn't been used since the stadium was renovated so it's a new surface. It will have carry and bounce, which is good for the spinners as well. Win toss and bat should be a no brainer.

1300 Good afternoon and welcome to ESPNcricinfo's ball-by-ball coverage of this grandest of occasions. A World Cup final between two co-hosts, one a nation of a billion and more, the other its tiny island neighbour. India and Sri Lanka were expected to be playing today when the tournament began, and here they are.

It is also Muttiah Muralitharan's final international appearance. He's injured, in more places than one, but he's not going to pass up this stage. Sri Lanka wouldn't want him to either, on one leg or none. And then there's Sachin Tendulkar, who's been playing top-flight cricket for more years (22) than he has not (16) but hasn't won a World Cup yet. India will either celebrate with him tonight, or cherish a magnificent career that sadly was without team glory.

"Fans in the subcontinent can sometimes be accused of missing the bigger picture by obsessing with individuals and certainly no one man can win the World Cup by himself. But that Tendulkar and Murali lend this World Cup final a certain poignancy and romance is unquestionable," wrote Sambit Bal on the eve of this final. "Neither deserves disappointment but that's the cruelty of sport: for one dream realised tomorrow, there will be one broken. Murali has already been part of a World Cup-winning team but, if India lose tomorrow, Tendulkar will never know the feeling."

Feeling a bit jittery now? Nothing like a few laughs to calm yourself. And no one guarantees laughs like Andy Zaltzman. "Final Day. Mumbai is excited. India is excited. Sri Lanka is excited. Cricket is excited. My breakfast dosa was excited. "Who's going to win, Andy? Don't eat me yet, don't let me die before you tell me who's going to win …"

Sharda Ugra weighed in with a mood piece, capturing the feeling around the Wankhede on the eve of this clash. A particularly resonant bit was at the end, when she mentioned the umpires. "It will be Australian Simon Taufel's first chance to stand in a World Cup final. His partner Pakistani Aleem Dar will look up to the sky and make a familiar gesture: touch his heart and then the ground. He does this in memory of the daughter he lost when officiating in the 2003 World Cup, a reminder that man comes from and returns to the earth. It is both a remembrance and a reminder that in the manic few hours before a World Cup final, it will help everyone in cricket - those on the field and those watching outside - to always stay grounded."

"Will Sreesanth win or lose this world cup? Depends which one of him turns up," says Skippy. Well here he is, bowling from over the wicket. He hasn't played since the opening game.

1.1

Sreesanth to Dilshan, no run, huge appeal for lbw first up, Aleem Dar says not out. That ball pitched on a length around leg stump. Dilshan went to smash it on the leg side and missed. That would have missed leg

1.2

Sreesanth to Dilshan, (no ball) 1 run, Dilshan gets tucked up by a length ball and plays on the leg side, Sreesanth had over-stepped and there's a free hit coming up ... India didn't concede an extra until very late in the innings against Pakistan. They've already conceded three today

1.2

2.3

Khan to Tharanga, no run, a fuller ball outside off and Tharanga square drives fluently again, Yuvraj is in the way at point

2.4

Khan to Tharanga, no run, Zaheer shortens his length a touch outside off and gets the ball to seam away from the left-hander a fraction, Tharanga began to push at it but let it go in the end

2.5

Khan to Tharanga, no run, wider outside off stump this time but Tharanga lets it go

2.6

Khan to Tharanga, no run, Tharanga pushes forward at a good length ball round off and gets an outside edge that goes along the ground to Yuvraj at point

4.6

Khan to Tharanga, no run, three maidens in a row from Zaheer, that is some start from India's ace. The last ball is on a good length and straight, forcing Tharanga to defend from the crease.

Sri Lanka need a release ... will Dilshan give it to them?

"What a change 8 years bring -- Zaheer in 2003 0/28 in 3 overs; in 2011 3 maidens in 3 overs.. Impressive even though bowling to Hayden/Gilly is different from bowling to Dilshan/Tharanga," says Sundar.

6.1

Khan to Tharanga, OUT, caught at slip! And Zaheer hasn't conceded a run yet. Zaheer pitches the ball on a length around off, forcing Tharanga to prod because of his line as well as the pressure he's created, the ball nips away from the left-hander off the pitch and Tharanga edges it. The chance flies quickly to Sehwag's right at first slip and he takes it before falling to the ground

9.5

Patel to Dilshan, 1 run, Dilshan flashes hard at a length ball outside off and edges towards third man

This is just in: Replays of the toss indicate decisively that Sangakkara called heads the first time as well, and the call is audible to the television producers. In the noise, Dhoni mis-heard it as a 'tails' call. It was why he turned towards Shastri saying, "we'll bat." However neither Shastri nor Crowe had heard Sangakkara's call, Crowe due to the noise, while Shastri was looking up at the coin. Shastri looked across to Crowe, the referee said, "I didn't hear it." There was then a brief conversation and it was decided the  toss had to be held again.

Thanks George. It's been a good start from India but Sri Lanka have been steady, and with Sangakkara and Dilshan both starting to look good, this match is set up well. Personally, I reckon Kumar looks like he's wearing Donald Duck on his head, but there you go.

It seems as though the broadcasters in Australia have lost interest in the World Cup, with the Australians having gone home. Here's Lawls: "Channel Nine are showing the cinematic masterpiece 'Alvin and the Chipmunks' instead of the World Cup Final. Cricket in Australia just got a little sicker. SHAME!"

End of over 15 (2 runs) Sri Lanka 58/1 (RR: 3.86)
TM Dilshan    32* (42b 3x4)      Harbhajan Singh    1-0-2-0
KC Sangakkara    18* (30b 3x4)      MM Patel    4-0-14-0

15.1

Patel to Sangakkara, 1 run, Sangakkara gets a bit of width outside off and drives hard to the sweeper at deep cover point

15.2

Patel to Dilshan, no run, straight and overpitched, Dilshan winds up looking for a big hard off-drive, but he mistimes it and finds the man at mid-off

15.3

Patel to Dilshan, no run, punched away to short cover, good bowling from Munaf

15.4

Patel to Dilshan, no run, again that's a good length and no width for Dilshan to launch a big cut - he guides it straight to point

15.5

Patel to Dilshan, 1 run, pushed away through cover, and Dilshan has found the gap this time

That's Dilshan's 500th run in the tournament - what an effort. Sachin could yet beat him, though.

15.6

Patel to Sangakkara, no run, cut away to backward point and can't find the gap

End of over 16 (2 runs) Sri Lanka 60/1 (RR: 3.75)

TM Dilshan    33* (46b 3x4)      Harbhajan Singh    1-0-2-0

16.1

Harbhajan Singh to Dilshan, no run, flighted on the pads again and Dilshan flicks it to midwicket, Raina fields it well

16.2

Harbhajan Singh to Dilshan, no run, defended away to the off side

16.3

Harbhajan Singh to Dilshan, OUT, gone! Harbhajan gets Dilshan! It was a very leg-side delivery and Dilshan went for the sweep, got a bit of glove on the ball and it's lobbed back on to his leg and deflected on to the stumps! Oh dear, what a disappointment for Dilshan but full credit to Harbhajan for building that pressure.

TM Dilshan b Harbhajan Singh 33 (87m 49b 3x4 0x6) SR: 67.34

Here's Mahela Jayawardene. He and Sangakkara have a big job ahead of them now.

16.4

Harbhajan Singh to Jayawardene, 1 run, tossed up on the stumps and it's clipped to leg

16.5

Harbhajan Singh to Sangakkara, 1 run, very good running now as Sangakkara dabs it to leg with soft hands and immediately takes off

16.6

Harbhajan Singh to Jayawardene, 1 run, well flighted by Harbhajan, and Jayawardene turns it through mid-on for another single

Madhu has this: " Dilshan became the fifth player to score 500 or more runs in a World Cup tournament. Sachin Tendulkar has done it twice in 1996 and 2003. Matthew Hayden, Ricky Ponting and Mahela Jayawardene are the others to achieve this feat. All three batsmen passed 500 runs in the 2007 World Cup."

KC Sangakkara    20* (33b 3x4)      MM Patel    5-0-16-0

17.1

Patel to Jayawardene, no run, very accurate - right on off stump and all Mahela can do is defend

17.2

Patel to Jayawardene, no run, again Jayawardene gets forward with bat and pad close together to defend a good delivery

17.3

Patel to Jayawardene, no run, probing outside off - but only just outside, not giving any width - and it's left alone by the batsman

17.4

Patel to Jayawardene, 2 runs, wristy stuff there from Mahela as he gets one that's a touch straighter, flicks it a tad uppishly through midwicket

17.5

Patel to Jayawardene, no run, guided away off the face of the bat to point

17.6

Patel to Jayawardene, no run, driven gently down to mid-on and can't find a gap this time

So, Munaf Patel has bowled six overs for 18 runs. Outstanding work. In fact, Sreesanth in the latter stages of his opening spell is the only bowler to even slightly let India down so far.

End of over 18 (2 runs) Sri Lanka 65/2 (RR: 3.61)

18.2

Harbhajan Singh to Jayawardene, 1 run, clipped from outside off through midwicket, Jayawardene is going to turn the strike over as much as he can here

18.3

Harbhajan Singh to Sangakkara, 1 run, Sangakkara uses the feet now, which nobody has really tried to Harbhajan yet, and he clips it though midwicket

18.4

Harbhajan Singh to Jayawardene, FOUR, good shot! Jayawardene gets a big stride forward and drives hard through point, all the way along the ground and finds the gap. The odd boundary will relieve some of the pressure building on Sri Lanka here.

18.5

Harbhajan Singh to Jayawardene, 1 run, clipped through forward square leg, again he's happy with a single

18.6

Harbhajan Singh to Sangakkara, FOUR, edged and safe! And four, to add to Harbhajan's frustration! That was well flighted and straightened enough to get a genuine outside edge from Sangakkara, and the ball has fizzed through the vacant second slip region.

End of over 19 (12 runs) Sri Lanka 77/2 (RR: 4.05)
KC Sangakkara    26* (36b 4x4)      Harbhajan Singh    3-0-17-1

Now then, Sreesanth makes his return. Interesting move.

19.1

Sreesanth to Jayawardene, 1 run, on the pads and it's clipped through square leg

19.2

Sreesanth to Sangakkara, 1 run, very straight once again and Sangakkara works a single through square leg

19.3

Sreesanth to Jayawardene, FOUR, another boundary through slips! Not that there are any slips in for Sreesanth, and to be fair it looked like Jayawardene played that very deliberately, cutting late and opening the face to run it through third man. Well played.

19.4

Sreesanth to Jayawardene, no run, driven to mid-on and can't justify risking a single

19.5

Sreesanth to Jayawardene, no run, there's a well-timed cut, but not well-placed. Jayawardene has steered this one straight to point

19.6

Sreesanth to Jayawardene, no run, a touch straighter now and Jayawardene respects this one, defending to the off side

End of over 20 (6 runs) Sri Lanka 83/2 (RR: 4.15)

20.2

Harbhajan Singh to Sangakkara, no run, cuts forward of point, who gets across in time to save this one

20.3

Harbhajan Singh to Sangakkara, no run, there's an lbw shout from Harbhajan but even he didn't look totally convinced. Sangakkara got a huge stride in, in fact he was about three steps down the wicket, and probably outside the line

20.4

Harbhajan Singh to Sangakkara, 2 runs, good, positive stuff now as Sangakkara uses the feet again and clips it through midwicket, it's chased down on the boundary

20.5

Harbhajan Singh to Sangakkara, no run, plays back to this one and it's a good straight ball

20.6

Sreesanth is off after a one-over spell and Dhoni wants spin from both ends. It's Yuuuuvie time!

21.1

Yuvraj Singh to Sangakkara, no run, Yuvraj is around the wicket to Sangakkara, who defends from a leg-stump line

21.2

Yuvraj Singh to Sangakkara, 1 run, some aggression now as Sangakkara tries to slog this one over midwicket, it's collected on the bounce by the man in the deep

21.3

Yuvraj Singh to Jayawardene, 1 run, some drift in now, and Jayawardene just punches a single through the off side

21.4

Yuvraj Singh to Sangakkara, 1 run, soft hands now as Sangakkara clips a single off his pads

21.5

Yuvraj Singh to Jayawardene, FOUR, too short. Bad ball, really, from Yuvraj. And despite not quite timing it to perfection, Mahela has still got enough on that pull for it to trickle into the boundary at deep midwicket

21.6

22.2

Harbhajan Singh to Sangakkara, no run, good ball. That one curves in and hurries Sangakkara, who cuts but doesn't find the gap

36.3

Yuvraj Singh to Jayawardene, no run, tossed up very slowly, Mahela comes forward and smothers it

Vishnu Udayan: "How on the GOD's green earth could you call Yuvi as a part timer?!" Ouch.

Nirav: "Odd captaincy. Even without bowling sreesanth, the other 4 have enough overs between them to finish the innings. Why go to the part timers when they've done well the rest of the innings." Here is Zaheer Khan

sudhir: "@Nirav, its not about completing overs, its about trying to get wickets. Dhoni is trying best possible options to get wicket.... "

38.1

Yuvraj Singh to Samaraweera, OUT, Yuvraj has a leg-before appeal turned down by umpire Taufel, and straightaway implores his captain to go for the review, Thilan went outside off stump on his knee for the big sweep, missed the delivery that went straight on with the angle, the question will be whether that hit him in line with off stump, it did, and is taking out middle stump, it is a rare occasion when umpire Taufel has to overturn his decision, this is one of them, and it is Yuvraj Singh for India again, he pushed Dhoni to go for the review

TT Samaraweera lbw b Yuvraj Singh 21 (53m 34b 2x4 0x6) SR: 61.76

41.2

Patel to Jayawardene, 1 run, 118.4 kph slower one, played away to point, Virat scores a direct hit, but Mahela was home. Munaf is nowhere close to the stumps, he was dawdlng around in his followthrough, and they take another run as the ball ricochets

Gareth: "I question Kapugerera's place in the side. Surely there's a chandimal or someone who offers more with the bat. He's had 80-odd matches listed as a batter, and has failed to notch up one ton, even when his side needs him."

43.1

Patel to Kulasekara, no run, Kula misses the cut, Dhoni collects and immediately goes up for the catch, Munaf thinks he has got his man too, umpire Dar shakes his head, Dhoni wants another review, there seems to be no indication of an edge there, seemed like a review in hope rather than conviction, there was some sort of noise as the ball passed the bat, but that will not earn India a wicket

KMDN Kulasekara run out 32 (41m 30b 1x4 1x6) SR: 106.66

Sri Lanka have surged to 274, thanks to an elegantly effective century from Mahela Jayawardene. This will take lots of chasing, they have a terrific bowling attack. But the pitch has played true, these are the smallest boundaries at the Wankhede according to Ravi Shastri, and it can be done. This is also the big final, there will be pressure, lots of it, there will be a legend to tackle in Muttiah Muralitharan, and the yorkers of Lasith Malinga to deal with. Can India do it? They barely have twenty minutes to psyche themselves up. Join us for the final chase of this World Cup in some time. Nitin Sundar will take you through till the first drinks break. That will be it from me, Abhishek Purohit. I will see you all on the Chatterbox.
