ICC World Cup Warm-up Matches, 2010/11 / Commentary

Now comes the real noise. Tendulkar trots out with Sehwag, so Gambhir will play at three or lower. Chennai is going delirious. This is one of Tendulkar's favourite grounds. It's Sehwag taking strike for now, though. Not that that is reducing the crowd's enthusiasm one bit. Mills has the ball. Two slips.

14.23 The Chepauk stadium is quite unrecognisable. Beautiful white canopies, very Adelaide style, over the stands. Huge gaps between the stands, apparently to allow the sea breeze come in and aid swing. The Marina beach is a stone's throw away if you have a very strong arm.

Chennai of course is a great place for a 'warm-up' game. The heat is mostly unimaginable.

14.17 local time Here are the toss quotes, then. (Barely audible over the raucous Chennai crowd's din.)

Dhoni: "Chennai will love to see Sachin bat, so we are batting first. I expect the pitch to have some bounce."

Taylor: "We batted first in the first game, so good to see how we can field first here. Vettori's hammy is not a 100%, so we don't have to risk it." Chennai yells! So does Taylor, to be heard.

Hello all! Welcome to the India v New Zealand warm-up game being played in Chennai. India have won the toss and will bat. We understand Daniel Vettori is not playing this game, but as reported earlier, Sachin Tendulkar is. While we confirm the teams and everything else, there's enough time to check out our World Cup Fantasy game. Play on!

While India's batting was scratchy in their first warm-up game, the spinners were impressive in helpful conditions. Expect another spinner-friendly track in sunny Chennai. Meanwhile, MS Dhoni wins two tosses on the trot. Miraculous!

"It just takes one game to change everything," says Piyush Chawla on air. "That's what happened in the last game [where he picked up 4 wickets]. I never take criticism to my mind. I was confident I'll do well whenever I get my chance."

Sravan sends in this comment. "Don't know what track you could expect in sunny Chennai, but you could always expect a "Sunny" Chennai!" You bet!

0.1

Mills to Sehwag, no run, short of a length and nice lively bounce as he tucks up Sehwag. He stays back and fends to the leg side.,

0.2

Mills to Sehwag, 1 run, Sehwag is away, again Mills tries to cramp him but it is on the pads and he nudges behind square for one. Sachin to take strike. The noise from the crowd is something else

0.3

Mills to Tendulkar, no run, Mills bangs it in back of a length and it thuds into the middle of Sachin's backfoot defence. Played away into the off side

0.4

Mills to Tendulkar, no run, fuller length, not there for the drive though. Sachin reaches out and is compact in defence.

0.5

Mills to Tendulkar, 1 run, Sachin's away now. Reaches out and pushes a full length ball on off stump towards mid off and he's off

Second slip disappears.

0.6

Mills to Sehwag, no run, back of a length and very straight. That's lesson one in the How to bowl at Sehwag book. Don't give room outside off. Defended off the back foot down the track

End of over 1 (2 runs) India 2/0
V Sehwag    1* (3b)      KD Mills    1-0-2-0
SR Tendulkar    1* (3b)

Tim Southee runs in now. Had a good time against Pakistan in the recent series.

1.1

Southee to Tendulkar, no run, short of a length on off stump, Sachin hops back and defends to the off side

1.2

Southee to Tendulkar, no run, so far, nice carry on this track. Sachin stays back again and looks to steer a delivery as it carries at good pace from back of a length. Defended square on the off side

1.3

Southee to Tendulkar, 1 run, this one comes in too much, allows Sachin to cover the line and drop it to midwicket for one

1.4

Southee to Sehwag, no run, Aha, Sehwag gets a sliver of width and room, and he lines up an upper cut. Southee hustles past him at good pace and Sehwag misses.

1.5

Southee to Sehwag, FOUR, Sehwag gets his first boundary. This one ends on his hips as Southee looks to cramp him on the off side. Sehwag calmly gets inside the line and whips it square for four

1.6

Southee to Sehwag, no run, and a nice short one to end the over. It wasn't wasted, it followed Sehwag as he swayed back, and he had to really swerve low to stay out of harm's way

Vibhash: "Imagine MSD running sachin out on 99..who will chennai support them, the batsman they have loved it for almost 2 decades or CSK captain?" Don't answer that one, Chennai!

End of over 2 (5 runs) India 7/0
V Sehwag    5* (6b 1x4)      TG Southee    1-0-5-0
SR Tendulkar    2* (6b)      KD Mills    1-0-2-0

2.1

Mills to Tendulkar, no run, Mills gets a lively legcutter going, lands on off and cuts away. Sachin adjusts well and defends with an opened face

2.2

Mills to Tendulkar, 1 run, Mills is generating decent speed here, and bounce. Sachin stays on the back foot, waits for the ball to get beside him outside off and then taps it down to third man

Slip and short cover for Sehwag.

2.3

Mills to Sehwag, 1 run, short ball, again too straight, Sehwag gets back and whips from the top of the bounce through midwicket. Half save, and he gets a single

2.4

Mills to Tendulkar, 1 run, fuller length to Sachin, also a little closer to leg stump line. He stays back and tucks it square with soft hands for one

2.5

Mills to Sehwag, 1 run, nice timing from Sehwag. Mills again bends it into his pads and Sehwag clips it with the wrists. Only a single though, as mid on cleans up

2.6

Mills to Tendulkar, FOUR, Sachin enthralls the crowd with a pleasing flick. Back of a length, a pretty decent delivery though it ended up on the pads. Not many people could have timed it so well. Sachin not only middled it, but also turned the wrists extra to get it to the right of the man at midwicket. It sped away.

End of over 3 (8 runs) India 15/0
SR Tendulkar    8* (10b 1x4)      KD Mills    2-0-10-0
V Sehwag    7* (8b 1x4)      TG Southee    1-0-5-0

3.1

Southee to Sehwag, no run, conscious effort here to deny Sehwag room or length. This was short too on off stump, and he had to rock back and try to force it through the off side. Can't time it too well

3.2

Southee to Sehwag, no run, and again, nice line from Southee. Gentle inward movement, not much really, but unless Sehwag looks to cross bat him over midwicket, there's no boundary to be had. He again punches off the back foot into the off side

3.3

Southee to Sehwag, 1 run, this time Sehwag gets an inch outside off. And he uses it, opening the face and running it towards third man for a single

3.4

Southee to Tendulkar, 1 run, interesting feet movement from Sachin. He knows fine leg is in, and trots across to off stump even before the ball is bowled. But it is very full and on off, so not the length for him to lap it away fine. Styris at short fine leg fields the flick

3.5

Southee to Sehwag, no run, finally some width and Sehwag looks to guide it past point. Can't place it too well and Ryder tumbles away to make a smart save

3.6

Southee to Sehwag, FOUR, part upper-cut, part square cut, part edge, part middle, and it speeds away for four through third man. Again, Southee ofers rare width and Sehwag throws everything at it.

End of over 4 (6 runs) India 21/0
V Sehwag    12* (13b 2x4)      TG Southee    2-0-11-0
SR Tendulkar    9* (11b 1x4)      KD Mills    2-0-10-0

4.1

Mills to Tendulkar, no run, Mills lands one full, Sachin gets forward and steers it square towards point

4.2

Mills to Tendulkar, no run, short of a length, Sachin is waiting on the back foot and defends square again

4.3

Mills to Tendulkar, no run, aha, now Sachin has an almighty go. Short and a foot and a half wide outside off, Sachin looks to bang it away backward of square. Mills is a little faster than he seems, most of the time. He was through Sachin quickly

4.4

Mills to Tendulkar, no run, and an offcutter now, Sachin spots it as it grips and turns into him from off and middle. He chooses to handle it with a defensive bat. Played to mid on

4.5

Mills to Tendulkar, no run, nice stuff here from Mills, another offcutter, this time and more pace than before and Sachin gets an inside egde as he looks to force through the off side. Fielded at short fine leg

4.6

Mills to Tendulkar, no run, maiden from Mills, this one keeps inexplicably low outside off. Hmm. Interesting pitch this. Good carry and a grubber. Sachin had no chance as he shaped to cut

End of over 5 (maiden) India 21/0
SR Tendulkar    9* (17b 1x4)      KD Mills    3-1-10-0
V Sehwag    12* (13b 2x4)      TG Southee    2-0-11-0

5.1

Southee to Sehwag, no run, Southee again denies Sehwag outside off and he looks to rock back and make room of his own. Can't get it this time

5.2

Southee to Sehwag, no run, very tight lines and a very straight bat. Sehwag stays back and punches to mid on with a very straight bat as it nips into him from off stump

5.3

Southee to Sehwag, 1 run, a bit of width, Sehwag doesn't look to cut and instead steers with an angled face to third man for a single

5.4

Southee to Tendulkar, FOUR, that's Sachin, vintage 1996 World Cup. On the up punch through the covers. Takes the length out of the equation. Why, he even takes the bowler out of the equation completely and just creams him through the line.

5.5

Southee to Tendulkar, no run, Southee wisely cuts the room outside off, Sachin shuffles across and forces wide of mid on

5.6

Southee to Tendulkar, no run, slower ball to end the over, cuts in off the track, Sachin spots it and drops it square on the off side for one

End of over 6 (5 runs) India 26/0
SR Tendulkar    13* (20b 2x4)      TG Southee    3-0-16-0
V Sehwag    13* (16b 2x4)      KD Mills    3-1-10-0

6.1

Mills to Sehwag, 1 wide, Mills strays just down the leg side, and umpire Tucker belatedly says wide. It was quite close to Sehwag's pad as it went through

6.1

Mills to Sehwag, no run, short ball outside off, not a bouncer like he means it. In fact, Curtly Ambrose might even call that a length ball. It goes through at around chest height as Sehwag weaves away

6.2

Mills to Sehwag, no run, fuller this time, enough for Sehwag to get the front foot out and square drive. He finds point though

6.3

Mills to Sehwag, no run, bangs it back of a length, Sehwag can't play through his favourite V - the one square on the off side. Punched without power to short cover

6.4

Mills to Sehwag, FOUR, right, Sehwag's not waiting for room anymore. He's manufactured a boundary here, by moving the front foot out of the line. He gets a short ball on off stump and cross bats it down the ground.

6.5

Mills to Sehwag, no run, short again, this time not much room, and extra pace too. Sehwag is late on the shot and drags it away wide of midwicket for no run

6.6

Mills to Sehwag, no run, smart change of pace, full and well outside off, Sehwag had to change his initial intention to launch into a cover drive, and eventually missed the shot as the ball came too late. Close to a wide, but he gets away with it

End of over 7 (5 runs) India 31/0
V Sehwag    17* (22b 3x4)      KD Mills    4-1-15-0
SR Tendulkar    13* (20b 2x4)      TG Southee    3-0-16-0

7.1

Southee to Tendulkar, no run, short of a length outside off, not enough room for Sachin to play him on the up. He gets it away, straight to mid off

7.2

Southee to Tendulkar, FOUR, Fine leg is in. Not the best time to dangle one on Sachin's pads. To be fair, it wasn't as straight as Sachin made it seem. He got inside the line with nifty feet movement and glanced it fine of short fine leg.

7.3

Southee to Tendulkar, OUT, Southee has silenced Chennai with a full slower ball on middle and off. Sachin initially throught of driving down the ground, then realised it was coming slow and looked to force it through mid on with the bottom hand. It came through too slow even for that shot. It found a way past between bat and pad and disturbed the timber. Lovely delivery.

SR Tendulkar b Southee 17 (31m 23b 3x4 0x6) SR: 73.91

That slow offcutter decieved Sachin in the flight. Talking of Southee and flights ....

Gambhir is in at three. Not Kohli.

7.4

Southee to Gambhir, no run, short of a length and angling across Gambhir who stays in the crease and defends to the off side

That was a slow offcutter from Southee.

7.5

Southee to Gambhir, 1 run, this one is on the pads and Gambhir helps it along fine for a single.

7.6

Southee to Sehwag, 1 run, another offcutter to end the over, Sehwag stays back and dabs it towards cover point for one

End of over 8 (6 runs) India 37/1
V Sehwag    18* (23b 3x4)      TG Southee    4-0-22-1
G Gambhir    1* (2b)      KD Mills    4-1-15-0

8.1

Mills to Sehwag, no run, full length from Mills, not over-pitched and Sehwag defends into the off side

8.2

Mills to Sehwag, FOUR, how did Sehwag find that gap? There is cover point and backward point. Mills bowled it to his field, back of a length on off stump. Sehwag leaned out and opend the face. Both fielders moved quickly and dived towards the ball, but it eluded them both.

8.3

Mills to Sehwag, no run, short ball on off stump, Sehwag goes back in the crease and looks to play it square but that was onto him quickly. Sehwag could not get it past point.

8.4

Mills to Sehwag, no run, aha, just short of a length outside off. Sehwag plays the pull shot, on the bounce to mid off. That was hit real hard, but did not find the gap

8.5

Mills to Sehwag, no run, short ball, back of a length outside off and he looks to smear it square, but misses. Mills is generating just that extra yard of pace that can get it through Sehwag before he hits it

8.6

Mills to Sehwag, 1 run, this time Sehwag stays beside the line and gets a single through cover point.

End of over 9 (5 runs) India 42/1
V Sehwag    23* (29b 4x4)      KD Mills    5-1-20-0
G Gambhir    1* (2b)      TG Southee    4-0-22-1

Jacob Oram comes on now. Seems to have got a haircut, and I dare say, lost some weight.

9.1

Oram to Sehwag, OUT, Oram's removed Sehwag's off stump with the first ball of his spell. Good delivery, but it kept low as a befuddled Sehwag looked back after it went through under his bat. On a length on off stump and Sehwag got marginally forward and looked to guide through the off side. The ball slid under the bat and sent off stump cartwheeling. Oram's pleased with the result.

V Sehwag b Oram 23 (40m 30b 4x4 0x6) SR: 76.66

Kohli walks in.

9.2

Oram to Kohli, no run, full delivery on off stump, Kohli leans out and defends towards cover

9.3

Oram to Kohli, no run, full length ball on off again, Kohli again reaches out with bat and pad close to each other. He defends it again

9.4

Oram to Kohli, no run, on the pads this time, Kohli plays it watchfully towards midwicket

9.5

Oram to Kohli, no run, full slower ball well outside off, Kohli reaches out and looks for the square drive, but can't get the gap

9.6

Oram to Kohli, no run, Oram begins with a wicket-maiden. Length ball on off stump, Kohli meets it with a defensive bat as he reaches out.

End of over 10 (wicket maiden) India 42/2
V Kohli    0* (5b)      JDP Oram    1-1-0-1
G Gambhir    1* (2b)      KD Mills    5-1-20-0

Bowling Powerplay taken, as James Franklin comes on, over the wicket.

10.1

Franklin to Gambhir, 1 run, slants into Gambhir's pads and he nurdles round the corner for a single

Kohli and Gambhir scored a truckload of runs against NZ in the recent ODI series.

10.2

Franklin to Kohli, 1 run, on Kohli's pads and he gets off the mark by staying back and clipping through square leg for a single

Sidd: "I think it is pretty bad for India that Sehwag desires to play out all 50 overs. In the last two games, he hasn't seemed like the giant we know. I'd rather that he scores 50 of 25 than 30 of 30 and get out either ways. With Dhoni, Raina & Yuvraj being mere numbers in the batting line up at the moment, I don't think we're very well placed with Sehwag's personal desires. I'd like a Sehwag's fiery start followed by a Yusuf's fiery finish. But then, that's just me."

10.3

Franklin to Gambhir, no run, very tight line from Franklin, a hint off off cut as it cramped Gambhir from off stump line. He opened the face and sliced it square.

10.4

Franklin to Gambhir, no run, again, on off stump, Gambhir has no room to work with and plays it to the off side and Franklin fields on his follow through

10.5

Franklin to Gambhir, 1 run, again that offcutter from Franklin, Gambhir did well to stay back and run it square with a completely opened face

10.6

Franklin to Kohli, FOUR, perfect line for Gambhir, but it is Kohli on strike. Friendly ball from left arm over, on the pads and Kohli tickles it daintily fine of short fine leg for four

End of over 11 (7 runs) India 49/2
V Kohli    5* (7b 1x4)      JEC Franklin    1-0-7-0
G Gambhir    3* (6b)      JDP Oram    1-1-0-1

Oram trundles in, round the wicket.

11.1

Oram to Gambhir, 1 run, back of a length outside off, Gambhir gets across and steers square for the 50th run

11.2

Oram to Kohli, no run, back of a length outside off, Kohli covers the line without gap between pad and bat. Defends it to the off side of the pitch

11.3

Oram to Kohli, no run, on middle and off, Kohli looks to try and play it to the leg side, but doesn't time it

11.4

Oram to Kohli, 1 run, this one is on the pads, Kohli gets inside the line and works it in front of square for a single

11.5

Oram to Gambhir, 1 run, a touch of width outside off, Gambhir takes the single with s guided steer down to fine leg

11.6

Oram to Kohli, 1 run, Kohli goes for a pull, but he's not completely in control. Oram seemed to generate more lift that either of them expected. Kohli managed to play it fine though, safely away from deep backward square leg

End of over 12 (4 runs) India 53/2
V Kohli    7* (11b 1x4)      JDP Oram    2-1-4-1
G Gambhir    5* (8b)      JEC Franklin    1-0-7-0

12.1

Franklin to Kohli, FOUR, another gift from Franklin to Kohli. Not as bad a ball as the one last over, but a supreme piece of timing from Kohli. Back of a length, angling into the pads and all that, but Kohli coaxed it away square without much more than a turn of the wrists

12.2

Franklin to Kohli, no run, full ball on the off stump line and Kohli looks for the booming off drive. Can't get it past mid off.

12.3

Franklin to Kohli, no run, not so full this time, Kohli gets forward without the same kind of intent and defends.

12.4

Franklin to Kohli, FOUR, shot from Kohli. Franklin over-pitched marginally outside off, and though it was coming in with the angle, Kohli had no problem driving it fluently through the covers.

12.5

Franklin to Kohli, 1 run, this time angles into middle and leg, he clips it through midwicket for one

12.6

Franklin to Gambhir, 1 run, touch of width outside Gambhir's off stump, he stays beside the line and cuts it behind square for a single

End of over 13 (10 runs) India 63/2
G Gambhir    6* (9b)      JEC Franklin    2-0-17-0
V Kohli    16* (16b 3x4)      JDP Oram    2-1-4-1

13.1

Oram to Gambhir, 1 run, on Gambhir's pads, quietly turned away square for one

Sen Saban from USA: "Practice games are useful not just for players. Myself, am practicing waking up at an ungodly morning hour here, firing up the comp without disturbing wifey, walking into work with redeye, continue following cricinfo steathily at work...getting the routines in for next 6 weeks."

It's all about perfecting the process.

13.2

Oram to Kohli, no run, this one is sliding down the leg side again, Kohli looks to help it away but can't get it wide of Baz

13.3

Oram to Kohli, 2 runs, Kohli's timing is looking a little ominous. Back of a length on middle and he turns it away without any fuss through square leg. The ball's just purring away off his blade.,

13.4

Oram to Kohli, 1 run, gets a single this time, with a quiet bunt to midwicket off a delivery on middle

13.5

Oram to Gambhir, 1 run, Gambhir gets half forward and drives into the covers for a single

13.6

Oram to Kohli, 1 run, Kohli turns another one from his pads through midwicket for a single

The entire NZ team seems to have got a close crew cut for their subcontinent visit. Nathan McCullum comes on now.

14.1

NL McCullum to Kohli, 1 run, tossed up outside off, he reaches out and flicks with the spin through long on

14.2

NL McCullum to Gambhir, no run, Gambhir plays him back down the track as he tosses up outside off

14.5

NL McCullum to Kohli, 1 run, Kohli leans out and works him with the spin wide of mid on for another single

Woodcock to Kohli, 1 run, this time he goes against the spin and works through midwicket for one

Woodcock to Kohli, 1 run, on the pads, Kohli works it square and gets a single

15.6

Woodcock to Gambhir, no run, another dot to end the over, and it is drinks

By the looks of it, Suresh Raina will struggle to make India's starting XI. Kohli is in pristine form. Yuvraj needs a good hit today.

NL McCullum to Kohli, no run, tossed up and turning into the pads, Kohli works with the spin to midwicket

16.2

NL McCullum to Kohli, 2 runs, legspinner from Nathan, he did this against Pakistan too now and then. Speared in on the pads, Kohli nurdles it fine and hares away furiously for two. I reckon he's among the fastest runners India have ever played. He made it by the time the throw came in and the stumps were broken

16.3

NL McCullum to Kohli, 1 run, back of a length, he stays back and works it with the spin through midwicket

16.4

NL McCullum to Gambhir, 1 run, Gambhir steals a single now, opens the face and dabs him into the off side for one

Woodcock to Kohli, 1 run, short ball, not too short but enough for Gambhir to latch on with a hurried pull shot. Can't elude deep midwicket

17.5

Woodcock to Gambhir, FOUR, dropped by Franklin and four. Tough take, mind you. Gambhir skips out, can't quite get under this flattish delivery on off and ends up scooping it hard and flat towards long off. Franklin runs in, and lunges forward but can't get his hands under the ball. It dribbles away for four.

47.6

Mills to Raina, OUT, Raina goes now, wanted to go over wide long on with his favourite heave, but got too much underneath the full delivery for extra cover to run in and take the skier, but he has played a blinder here, more pleasant worries for Dhoni about the batting line-up

Nakeeran: "WHAT! this is not a official match ? ........how cruel."

144 runs have come after Gambhir's dismissal in the 39th over, in a brutally effective display of power hitting by MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina. Dhoni took his time to get going as he always does, but even the adoring Chennai crowd could not have imagined that he would explode in such fashion. After half-centuries from Gambhir and Kohli, India have launched themselves into orbit, and 361, one feels, would be too much for a shocked New Zealand. Join us in 30 minutes for the chase

End of over 50 (15 runs) India 360/5
