ICC Champions Trophy, 2nd Qualifying Match: West Indies v Zimbabwe at Ahmedabad, Oct 8, 2006
ICC Champions Trophy - 2nd match, Qualifying Group
West Indies won by 9 wickets (with 214 balls remaining)
Played at Sardar Patel Stadium, Motera, Ahmedabad (neutral venue)
8 October 2006 - day/night match (50-over match)

Hello and welcome to Cricinfo's coverage of the 2006 Champions Trophy. Today's match is the second qualifier, to be battled out between Zimbabwe and West Indies at Ahmedabad. This is Jamie Alter, and together with Sriram Veera, I'll be bringing you today's commentary as it happens. Do stay with us as we await for the toss from out in the middle.

The pitch, as is true with any Ahmedabad surface, looks to be quite dry and hard. History has shown that it tends to be a bit sluggish as well.

Right, here wo go. Prosper Utseya calls tails and wins, and decides to bat. He says the dew factor is not a major consideration based on Zimbabwe's practice sessions here. They will be without Vusi Sibanda, a batsman who has looked good against top opposition in recent times, as his Australian club has denied him permission to tour India at this time. In his place steps Tafadzwa Mufambisi, the right-hand batsman. Tafadzwa Kamungozi, a young legspinner just one ODI old, has gotten a second opportunity to impress.

The West Indies have retained the same XI from the final of the DLF Cup which they lost to Australia. Brian Lara doesn't seem that disappoined on losing the toss, he wants to see how chasing under lights will go. Lara has insisted well before this match that playing the preliminary round will help West Indies, as they begin the defence of the trophy they so splendidly won back in 2004. Their recent form has been promising: they thumped Zimbabwe 5-0 and beat India 4-1, then beat India to reach the final of the Malaysian tri-nations series recently.

Zimbabwe are the dark horses, but the Champions Trophy is a big deal for them. They have nothing to lose.

Okay then, the umpires are walking out to the middle, followed by the Zimbabwean openers, Mufambisi and Chamu Chibhabha. Here come the West Indian player, led by Lara.

Gayle to Ireland, OUT, Gentle off break, did nothing dramatic and that was the secret. Ireland pushed at it , expecting it would turn in sharply - why he thought so, only he would know- and ended up playing inside the line. Landed just outside off stump and hit off. As simple as it gets. I think I caught a sheepish grin pastered on Gayle.
