ICC Champions Trophy - 3rd match, Qualifying Group

Sri Lanka v Zimbabwe

Sri Lanka won by 144 runs

0.1

Ireland to Tharanga, no run

0.2

Ireland to Tharanga, no run, that's left by the lefthander as an innocuous delivery sails with plenty of room across the batsman and down the channel

0.3

Ireland to Tharanga, no run, nudged a shorter one to the leg-side, but didn't quite get hold of it and it went straight to a fielder anyway

0.4

Ireland to Tharanga, no run, decent ball in the channel and the batsman shoulders arms

0.5

Ireland to Tharanga, no run, loose ball and a loose shot from Tharanga, who goes down on one knee and proposes to swoosh that one through cover, but he plays right over the top of that and misses completely

0.6

Ireland to Tharanga, FOUR, short, wide and gets the treatment, lashed through point for a confident four

End of over 1 (4 runs) Sri Lanka 4/0 (RR: 4.00)
WU Tharanga    4* (6b 1x4)      AJ Ireland    1-0-4-0
ST Jayasuriya    0* (0b)

1.1

Mupariwa to Jayasuriya, 1 run, Jayasuriya is off the mark straight away: he tickles a short ball into midwicket where it's winged back in quickly but not accurately and the batsmen scramble through without alarm in the end

1.2

Mupariwa to Tharanga, no run, left alone by the batsman as the ball whistles through over the stumps; decent delivery

1.3

Mupariwa to Tharanga, 1 no ball, the bowler falls away slightly in delivery and that one strays down the off-side; he was looking out-of-sorts with that one, and it's a no-ball to boot

1.3

Mupariwa to Tharanga, no run, ooh, another loose shot from Tharanga, reaching out to cover-drive one down the off-side channel, but he missed completely - again

1.4

Mupariwa to Tharanga, no run, left alone this time

1.5

Mupariwa to Tharanga, no run, a straight delivery right up there and that's defended down

1.6

Mupariwa to Tharanga, no run, another ball on the button and all the batsman can do is defend on the back foot

A good start from Mupariwa there. These are very good conditions to bat in, incidentally

End of over 2 (2 runs) Sri Lanka 6/0 (RR: 3.00)
WU Tharanga    4* (12b 1x4)      T Mupariwa    1-0-2-0
ST Jayasuriya    1* (1b)      AJ Ireland    1-0-4-0

2.1

Ireland to Jayasuriya, no run, the batsman plays that fairly lateish, readjusting his thoughts as the ball pitches straight rears slightly and he fends that one down on the back foot

2.2

Ireland to Jayasuriya, no run, defended into covers, another decent delivery

two slips for Jayasuriya and the third man is fairly square and there's a gully in place

2.3

Ireland to Jayasuriya, no run, that one strays down leg and the batsman chases it round; there was a noise but it came off the thigh pad, as it was Taylor fluffed any potential catch

2.4

Ireland to Jayasuriya, 3 runs, punched nicely through point but Chigumbura chases that down well, just inside the boundary and the batsmen run three

2.5

Ireland to Tharanga, no run, right on the money and Tharanga can only defend that one down

2.6

Ireland to Tharanga, 2 wides, that one strays down leg and the keeper misses that one again, too, the ball rolling behind him

2.6

Ireland to Jayasuriya, no run, tidy end to the over, there, with a decent delivery that's defended once more

End of over 3 (5 runs) Sri Lanka 11/0 (RR: 3.66)
ST Jayasuriya    4* (6b)      AJ Ireland    2-0-9-0
WU Tharanga    4* (13b 1x4)      T Mupariwa    1-0-2-0

3.1

Mupariwa to Tharanga, FOUR, gorgeous drive off the back foot through cover and that runs away off the back foot; a beautiful shot, just guided easily with sumptuous wrists

3.2

Mupariwa to Tharanga, no run, better from the bowler - straight and that's defended

3.3

Mupariwa to Tharanga, no run, the batsman didn't quite hold of that one, which he steers into the cover region and it's easily picked up

3.4

Mupariwa to Tharanga, no run, shorter ball, played off the back foot but it's swooped on by the man close in on the off side

3.5

Mupariwa to Tharanga, no run, tidier from the bowler, pitching on middle and off and that's defended

3.6

Mupariwa to Tharanga, no run, pushed right up there, the batsman tries to straight drive it and Mupariwa dives over the ball which crashes straight into the stumps at the non-striker's end, saving any runs

End of over 4 (4 runs) Sri Lanka 15/0 (RR: 3.75)
WU Tharanga    8* (19b 2x4)      T Mupariwa    2-0-6-0
ST Jayasuriya    4* (6b)      AJ Ireland    2-0-9-0

4.1

Ireland to Jayasuriya, 1 run, a good delivery but the batsman works that cleverly to leg, with a mere press, where they batsmen scramble a single as there is no fielder at square leg; indeed there are seven men on the off-side for Jayasuriya

4.2

Ireland to Tharanga, 1 no ball, just overstepped with a little extra effort there and the batsman doesn't quite manage to get hold of the ball, chopping it into the ground

4.2

Ireland to Tharanga, 2 runs, didn't time that one properly, an inside edge flies through to the mid-wicket area

4.3

Ireland to Tharanga, no run, sends that one aerial, but just short of Chigumbura at point, and the few supporters in the ground cheer loudly at the temporary excitement

4.4

Ireland to Tharanga, no run, banged in by the bowler with a scrambled seam, but that's defended quite easily in the end

4.5

Ireland to Tharanga, no run, ooh, that one pitched in line and there was an appeal. That pitched in line but height may have been a factor in the call being turned down, as was the possible inside edge

4.6

Ireland to Tharanga, no run, played a defensive one off the back foot to round off another tidy over

This has been a steady start from Sri Lanka and a decent start from the Zimbabwe opening bowlers who have managed to keep the batsmen fairly quiet so far

End of over 5 (4 runs) Sri Lanka 19/0 (RR: 3.80)
WU Tharanga    10* (25b 2x4)      AJ Ireland    3-0-13-0
ST Jayasuriya    5* (7b)      T Mupariwa    2-0-6-0

5.1

Mupariwa to Jayasuriya, no run, straight and that's defended again

5.2

Mupariwa to Jayasuriya, 1 run, another inside edge and that one flies behind square where it's winged back in without difficulty

5.2

Mupariwa to Jayasuriya, 1 run, another inside edge and that one flies behind square where it's winged back in without difficulty

5.3

Mupariwa to Tharanga, FOUR, crashing front-foot drive on the up through cover and that was four all the way

5.4

Mupariwa to Tharanga, no run, slight change of pace and that jumps off the bottom third of the bat but bounces easily shy of the mid-off

5.5

Mupariwa to Tharanga, 2 runs, lifts a straight delivery into the mid-wicket region, but again the timing is not quite precise

5.6

Mupariwa to Tharanga, no run, defended off the back foot and a dot ball rounds off the over

End of over 6 (7 runs) Sri Lanka 26/0 (RR: 4.33)
WU Tharanga    16* (29b 3x4)      T Mupariwa    3-0-13-0

Ireland to Jayasuriya, no run, on the money and that's defended

6.2

Ireland to Jayasuriya, no run, another tight delivery and again that's defended

6.3

Ireland to Jayasuriya, 1 run, made room to squeeze that one behind point, good wrist action

6.4

Ireland to Tharanga, no run, that one pitches on leg and the batsman tries to get over it, fails and the ball pops up into space on the leg-side

6.5

Ireland to Tharanga, 1 run, lovely cover-drive this time

6.6

Ireland to Jayasuriya, 1 run, dug out a full ball and turned it into a straight drive for a quick single

End of over 7 (3 runs) Sri Lanka 29/0 (RR: 4.14)
ST Jayasuriya    8* (13b)      AJ Ireland    4-0-16-0
WU Tharanga    17* (31b 3x4)      T Mupariwa    3-0-13-0

7.1

Mupariwa to Jayasuriya, 1 run, short and wide and that's hit out on the off, but Chigumbura does well to recover in the covers, after initially fluffing the ball

Mupariwa to Tharanga, no run, straight and true and that can only be defended

7.3

Mupariwa to Tharanga, no run, dug out into the covers

7.4

Mupariwa to Tharanga, 1 no ball, a big swoosh from the batsman and Taylor quickly takes the stumps, but the batsman is well in

7.4

Mupariwa to Tharanga, SIX, makes that straight drive look really easy as he smacks it over long-off for a six, with a lot of bottom hand. Lovely

7.5

Mupariwa to Tharanga, 1 run, easy drive into the covers

7.6

Mupariwa to Jayasuriya, no run, that's better from Mupariwa; full and that's defended

End of over 8 (9 runs) Sri Lanka 38/0 (RR: 4.75)
ST Jayasuriya    9* (15b)      T Mupariwa    4-0-22-0
WU Tharanga    24* (36b 3x4 1x6)      AJ Ireland    4-0-16-0

8.1

Ireland to Tharanga, OUT, absolutely brilliant fielding from Chigumbura after Jayasuriya went walk about at the non-striker's end. That wicket came from nowhere, but Jayasuriya was backing up too far and the Zimbabweans get their reward for some enthusiastic fielding. Jayasuriya walks off shaking his head

ST Jayasuriya run out 9 (39m 15b 0x4 0x6) SR: 60.00

Jayawardene strides in

8.2

Ireland to Tharanga, 2 runs, worked well off his hips just in front of square and that's some good running from the batsmen to make it two

8.3

Ireland to Tharanga, no run, ooh, the batsman whips his wrists at that one, trying to flash an off-drive back past the bowler, but a loose shot away from the body results in a complete miss

8.4

Ireland to Tharanga, 2 runs, cracking shot, picked the gap but with a packed off-side field that won't go for four

8.5

Ireland to Tharanga, 2 runs, compact stroke, nudged away behind square on the leg side for a comfortable two

8.6

Ireland to Tharanga, no run, driven into cover, straight to a fielder

End of over 9 (6 runs) Sri Lanka 44/1 (RR: 4.88)

9.3

Mupariwa to Jayawardene, no run, flashed hard at the short cover fielder who was straight on it

9.4

9.5

Mupariwa to Tharanga, 1 run, more good fielding, this time on the leg-side where Masakadza runs and dives full stretch to cut off the ball. Good work

9.6

Mupariwa to Jayawardene, 1 run, streaky shot, the batsman opens the face slightly and that runs down to third man

It's over to Andrew McGlashan for the next ten overs.

End of over 10 (5 runs) Sri Lanka 49/1 (RR: 4.90)
DPMD Jayawardene    4* (5b)      T Mupariwa    5-0-27-0
WU Tharanga    31* (43b 3x4 1x6)      AJ Ireland    5-0-22-0

Thanks Jenny and morning/afternoon/evening to everyone depending on where you are follow this match. An interesting first 10 overs with the Zimbabwe bowlers managing to keep the Sri Lankans under some sort of control. The wicket of Jayasuriya was a huge boost but can they build on it?

10.1

Ireland to Jayawardene, no run, driven powerfully into the covers but straight to the fielder

10.2

Ireland to Jayawardene, no run, attempted bouncer from Ireland and that surprised Jayawardene, good thinking from the bowler

Ireland to Jayawardene, no run, defended into the covers

The first five-over Powerplay has been taken

10.4

Ireland to Jayawardene, no run

10.5

Ireland to Jayawardene, OUT, a short, wide ball brings another breakthrough for Zimbabwe as Jayawardene chases the delivery from Ireland and sends a thin edge through to Taylor. It would probably have been called a wide and Jayawardene can hardly believe what he's done but that's a huge wicket

Thanks Jenny, hi again folks. Those ten overs seemed to speed by thanks to Utseya and Kamungozi racing through their overs. But the spin pair have done a good job, keeping a tight leash on the batsmen, making use of a slowish pitch which makes scoring difficult when there isn't much pace on the ball. However, Sri Lanka have a good platform and some big hitters still to come.

Well, Sri Lanka will be more than happy with reaching 285 for 7 on a slowish wicket. Zimbabwe's ground fielding has been good and they can be pleased with themselves, and their bowling was decent in parts. But now comes a huge challenge with the bat. Can they get anywhere close? Join Andrew McGlashan after the break to find out

Welcome back to the second half of this qualifying match with Zimbabwe chasing 286 for an unlikely victory. Sri Lanka don't have Chaminda Vaas today but there is plenty of quality in their attack with the rapid Lasith Malinga providing the pace and Muttiah Muralitharan the main spin threat. The Zimbabwe spinners made scoring difficult in stages and Mahela Jaywardene will also be able to use Sanath Jayasuriya and Tillakaratne Dilshan if he needs further options. The key for Zimbabwe is not losing early wickets against the new ball, let's see how they get on.
