ICC Champions Trophy - 5th match, Qualifying Group

Bangladesh v Zimbabwe

Bangladesh won by 101 runs

Good morning all, and welcome to coverage of the latest match of the Champions Trophy. I'm Jenny Thompson and I can tell you that Zimbabwe have won the toss and chosen to field against Bangladesh.

With Zimbabwe having beaten Bangladesh 3-2 in the recent series in Zimbabwe this match could at least be competitive, which would make a nice change from the drubbings Zimbabwe have been suffering. They've made a few changes to their side in a bid to register a win at last. Tafadzwa Mufambisi drops to the subs' bench, Tawanda Mupariwa and Piet Rinke are out; Greg Strydom, Gary Brent and Ed Rainsford are in.

As expected Bangladesh have dropped the out-of-form Mohammad Ashraful and Syed Rasel and they have brought in Rajin Saleh and Mehrab Hossain, which will be Hossain's international debut.

Speaking of debuts, Edward Craig is lined up in the commentary chair to replace me after the first ten overs and later on his fellow ginger Andrew McGlashan will be taking up the reins.

Meanwhile, here are the teams:

Bangladesh Shahriar Nafees, Rajin Saleh, Aftab Ahmed, Saqibul Hasan, Habibul Bashar (capt), Mehrab Hossain jnr, Farhad Reza, Khaled Mashud (wk), Mohammd Rafique, Mashrafe, Abdur Razzaq, 12th - Shahadat Hossain

Zimbabwe Brendon Taylor (wk), Chamunorwa Chibhabha, Hamilton Masakadza, Gregory Strydom, Elton Chigumbura, Gary Brent, Stuart Matsikenyeri, Prosper Utseya (capt), Anthony Ireland, Edward Rainsford, Tafadzwa Kamungozi, 12th - Tafadzwa Mufambisi

0.1

Rainsford to Rajin Saleh, no run, bangs it in short, gets some reasonable bounce but that bends away from the batsman and he shoulders arms

0.2

Rainsford to Rajin Saleh, no run, a little wider this time and that bends right away from the batsman who has no interest in chasing it

Two slips in first up

0.3

Rainsford to Rajin Saleh, no run, straighter and the batsman defends that one with a straight bat, showing the maker's mark perfectly

0.4

Rainsford to Rajin Saleh, no run, again that one was defended and this is tidy so far from Rainsford, right on the money there

0.5

Rainsford to Rajin Saleh, no run, a hint of swing again and that leaves the batsman, who leaves the ball in turn

0.6

Rainsford to Rajin Saleh, no run, more swing and Saleh leaves that well alone to bring up a maiden first off and that's a good start for Zimbabwe

Ireland to open from the other end, two slips in place for the lefthander

End of over 1 (maiden) Bangladesh 0/0 (RR: 0.00)
Rajin Saleh    0* (6b)      EC Rainsford    1-1-0-0
Shahriar Nafees    0* (0b)

1.1

Ireland to Shahriar Nafees, no run, the ball died slightly on its way through to the keeper past the batsman who left that well alone

This is showing to be a low pitch

1.2

Ireland to Shahriar Nafees, no run, that one died again, with a bit more movement away from the lefthander

1.3

Ireland to Shahriar Nafees, no run, good areas from Ireland and that one sailed through this time

1.4

Ireland to Shahriar Nafees, no run, the ball died once more and Saleh was quick to shoulder arms and leave that be

1.5

Ireland to Shahriar Nafees, no run, more of the same, the ball angling across the lefthander and once more he perfects his leave

1.6

Ireland to Shahriar Nafees, no run, ooh, that one kept a bit low and the batsman jabbed at that one but he left it as it went away from him

This has been a great start from Zimbabwe's bowlers, delivering two maidens on the spin

End of over 2 (maiden) Bangladesh 0/0 (RR: 0.00)
Shahriar Nafees    0* (6b)      AJ Ireland    1-1-0-0
Rajin Saleh    0* (6b)      EC Rainsford    1-1-0-0

2.1

Rainsford to Rajin Saleh, no run, the batsman steers that one out to cover where it's tidily picked up and Bangladesh are still searching for their first run

2.2

Rainsford to Rajin Saleh, no run, left alone as that one sails down the off-side channel

2.3

Rainsford to Rajin Saleh, 2 runs, runs at last! And they're cheered loudly by the crowd. Good hands, pushing that in front of square and that's his 1000th run in one-dayers. Well done that man

2.4

Rainsford to Rajin Saleh, FOUR, and more runs the very next ball! Struck more fluently this time, a lovely, balanced cover-drive which he threw his hands at, and that evades the diving fielder at cover and races away

2.5

Rainsford to Rajin Saleh, 1 wide, very wide down the off-side, but the batsman had a bit of a head-rush and chased it with his bat, but it was too wide to reach

2.5

Rainsford to Rajin Saleh, no run, that one swung away from the righthander who slashed at it with an ugly swish

2.6

Rainsford to Rajin Saleh, no run

End of over 3 (7 runs) Bangladesh 7/0 (RR: 2.33)
Rajin Saleh    6* (12b 1x4)      EC Rainsford    2-1-7-0
Shahriar Nafees    0* (6b)      AJ Ireland    1-1-0-0

3.1

Ireland to Shahriar Nafees, no run, More bounce for this one - but only comparatively, it's still pretty low - hitting the dry section of the pitch and that leaves the batsman and finds the keeper

3.2

Ireland to Shahriar Nafees, no run, Ooh, uppish drive dropped by a diving Chigumbura in the covers. A difficult chance, low and to his right, and he got a hand to it but the chance went down.

3.3

Ireland to Shahriar Nafees, 1 wide, wide of off-stump

3.3

Ireland to Shahriar Nafees, 1 no ball, an overstepped no-ball follows the wide

3.3

Ireland to Shahriar Nafees, no run, better from Ireland, pushed up and that's guided easily into the covers

3.4

Ireland to Shahriar Nafees, no run, left alone, excellent areas

3.5

Ireland to Shahriar Nafees, no run, left that one alone again, and that's a great seam position, stable and the ball arcs gently away from the lefthander

3.6

Ireland to Shahriar Nafees, no run, wider from the bowler and the batsman cracks a delicious cut but straight to point where it's leapt on and smothered

End of over 4 (2 runs) Bangladesh 9/0 (RR: 2.25)
Shahriar Nafees    0* (13b)      AJ Ireland    2-1-2-0
Rajin Saleh    6* (12b 1x4)      EC Rainsford    2-1-7-0

4.1

Rainsford to Rajin Saleh, no run, play and miss, the batsman was squared right up there by one which beats him with the lack of bounce. This pitch is showing some variation in bounce; it's quite heavily cracked

4.2

Rainsford to Rajin Saleh, no run, the batsman squares up to that to defend it and a thick outside edge flies low and out of danger

4.3

Rainsford to Rajin Saleh, no run, straighter line and that's defended

4.4

Rainsford to Rajin Saleh, no run, left alone

4.5

Rainsford to Rajin Saleh, no run, straighter and that's helped into the on-side

4.6

Rainsford to Rajin Saleh, OUT, plumb! Not much doubt about that one, as the batsman shaped to pull but the ball failed to get up at all, and struck on the back leg just above the knee roll. The ball would have gone on to hit the top of off

Rajin Saleh lbw b Rainsford 6 (21m 18b 1x4 0x6) SR: 33.33

End of over 5 (wicket maiden) Bangladesh 9/1 (RR: 1.80)

5.1

Ireland to Shahriar Nafees, no run, defended into the covers

5.2

Ireland to Shahriar Nafees, no run, defended on the back foot this time

5.3

Ireland to Shahriar Nafees, 1 run, Straight drive is cut off by the man at mid-off who slides at full stretch. Typically good fielding from Zimbabwe, this

5.4

Ireland to Aftab Ahmed, 1 run, squeezed into the gap between mid-wicket and mid-on

5.5

Ireland to Shahriar Nafees, 1 wide, strays right down leg

5.5

Ireland to Shahriar Nafees, no run, pushed right up there and that's defended into the covers

5.6

Ireland to Shahriar Nafees, no run, on the button and that's quickly defended by the batsman just outside the off stump

End of over 6 (3 runs) Bangladesh 12/1 (RR: 2.00)
Shahriar Nafees    1* (18b)      AJ Ireland    3-1-5-0
Aftab Ahmed    1* (1b)      EC Rainsford    3-2-7-1

6.1

Rainsford to Aftab Ahmed, no run, defended forward

6.2

Rainsford to Aftab Ahmed, no run, defended on the front foot again

6.3

Rainsford to Aftab Ahmed, no run, hit into the covers

6.4

Rainsford to Aftab Ahmed, no run, good length delivery and that's defended once more

6.5

Rainsford to Aftab Ahmed, no run, played that one away from the body, a cut on the back foot but that goes straight to the man at point who gets his body behind it

6.6

Rainsford to Aftab Ahmed, no run, ooh! Another big appeal but that one's missing leg

End of over 7 (maiden) Bangladesh 12/1 (RR: 1.71)
Aftab Ahmed    1* (7b)      EC Rainsford    4-3-7-1
Shahriar Nafees    1* (18b)      AJ Ireland    3-1-5-0

7.1

Ireland to Shahriar Nafees, FOUR, whipped off the hips on the front foot and that races through the square-leg boundary

7.2

Ireland to Shahriar Nafees, no run, defended this time

7.3

Ireland to Shahriar Nafees, no run, banged in but that one doesn't get up - there's really not a lot of pace in this pitch at all - and the batsman has time to defend that on the back foot

7.4

Ireland to Shahriar Nafees, 1 run, hit out square to the boundary where it's winged back in

7.5

Ireland to Aftab Ahmed, 1 run, a bit wayward down the leg side and that's tucked away with the batsman taking his bottom hand off the bat on the follow-through of that shot

7.6

Ireland to Shahriar Nafees, FOUR, ooh, too straight from the bowler and the batsman is quickly onto that one helping it round to right behind him

End of over 8 (10 runs) Bangladesh 22/1 (RR: 2.75)
Shahriar Nafees    10* (23b 2x4)      AJ Ireland    4-1-15-0
Aftab Ahmed    2* (8b)      EC Rainsford    4-3-7-1

8.1

Rainsford to Aftab Ahmed, 1 run, straight drive but that's quickly picked up

8.2

Rainsford to Shahriar Nafees, 2 runs, worked off his hips and that's hit just behind square

8.3

Rainsford to Shahriar Nafees, no run, that's a good length and that's straight and defended

8.4

Rainsford to Shahriar Nafees, no run, defended into the covers

8.5

Rainsford to Shahriar Nafees, no run, pushed right up there and defended once more

8.6

Rainsford to Shahriar Nafees, 1 wide, wide signalled and Rainsford puts his hands on his hips, but he can't argue with the umpire, that was really wide down off and the batsman gamely tries to lash that through covers but can't get anywhere near it

8.6

Rainsford to Shahriar Nafees, no run, defended this time

This has been a fairly sluggish start from the Bangladesh batsmen, not helped by a sluggish pitch and some fairly accurate bowling from Rainsford and Ireland

End of over 9 (4 runs) Bangladesh 26/1 (RR: 2.88)
Shahriar Nafees    12* (28b 2x4)      EC Rainsford    5-3-11-1
Aftab Ahmed    3* (9b)      AJ Ireland    4-1-15-0

9.1

Ireland to Aftab Ahmed, OUT, strangled down the leg-side and that's really very well held by Taylor, diving low to his left and getting his left glove underneath it to scoop it up. That's a good decision from the umpire to match; the batsman just getting a shade of glove on it. Zimbabwe's tails are up pretty early on indeed

Aftab Ahmed c †Taylor b Ireland 3 (20m 10b 0x4 0x6) SR: 30.00

9.2

Ireland to Shakib Al Hasan, no run, straight and the batsman isn't sure what to do with that so he leaves it and it crashes into him

9.3

Ireland to Shakib Al Hasan, 1 run, squeezed off his hips and that one goes square

9.4

Ireland to Shahriar Nafees, no run, ooh, lovely delivery just moving away a little but from the lefthander who's in all sorts of difficulties and somehow fails to get an edge on it. Ireland asking all the questions here and Bangladesh don't have many answers

9.5

Ireland to Shahriar Nafees, 1 run, whipped to fine leg where it's comfortably picked up and returned

9.6

Ireland to Shakib Al Hasan, 1 run, scrambled single

That's the end of the first PowerPlay where Zimbabwe are on top and that's the end of my stint for now. Here's Edward.

Thanks Jenny, they have taken the second PowerPlay and I am starting off gingerly

14.6

Chigumbura to Shakib Al Hasan, no run, full and pushed back to mid off

Drinks break and we all breathe a sigh of relief, most of all me after my first five overs, hope it's okay - it's certainly a tight tustle on a low, slow pitch. That Taylor catch was great, by the way, diving a long way to his left.

End of over 48 (6 runs) Bangladesh 218/6 (RR: 4.54)
Mohammad Rafique    2* (3b)      EC Rainsford    10-3-41-2
Shahriar Nafees    119* (157b 17x4 1x6)      GB Brent    6-0-23-1

48.1

Brent to Mohammad Rafique, 1 run, good change of pace, but the batsman gives himself room

48.2

Brent to Shahriar Nafees, 1 run, a tired swipe from Nafees who chips it to a mid off who's deep, he scrambles forward, leaps and puts down a tough chance - Chibhabha is the fielder

48.3

Brent to Mohammad Rafique, no run, swing and a miss and catches the keeper on the arm

48.4

Brent to Mohammad Rafique, 1 run, full and whacked at point who can't quite gather cleanly

48.5

Brent to Shahriar Nafees, 1 run, slow one again and swung to deep midwicket

48.6

Brent to Mohammad Rafique, 1 run, that's the shot patented by Andrew Strauss, steps across his stumps and flicks it to fine leg but can only chip it short of Ireland

End of over 49 (5 runs) Bangladesh 223/6 (RR: 4.55)
Mohammad Rafique    5* (7b)      GB Brent    7-0-28-1
Shahriar Nafees    121* (159b 17x4 1x6)      EC Rainsford    10-3-41-2

49.1

Ireland to Mohammad Rafique, 2 runs, chopped out to deep point

49.2

Ireland to Mohammad Rafique, 1 run, full and clubbed past the bowler with an extraordinary piece of improvisation - good fielding though

49.3

Ireland to Shahriar Nafees, 1 run, width and slapped to cover for one

49.4

Ireland to Mohammad Rafique, 2 runs, more width and a swipe over point

49.5

Ireland to Mohammad Rafique, 1 leg bye, that Strauss shot again but it hits his pad and the bowler can't stop them taking the run

49.6

Ireland to Shahriar Nafees, 1 run, last ball is smeared to midwicket and that's it for Bangladesh

A great display from Nafees on a slow wicket. Zimbabwe bowled well early and nicely at the death, but Nafees found his range towards the end. These may not be the best two teams in the competition but they are the most colourful both with their strips and the energy of their cricket. Rainsford's bowling was full of passion and the delight on Nafees' face on becoming the first Bangladeshi to score two ODI hundreds was brighter than the floodlights. He ended on 123, the highest score for his country in ODIs - he looked exhausted and has gone for a welcome cup of tea - like me. I'll be back to watch the Zim reply.

End of over 50 (8 runs) Bangladesh 231/6
Shahriar Nafees    123* (161b 17x4 1x6)      AJ Ireland    9-1-45-2
Mohammad Rafique    10* (11b)      GB Brent    7-0-28-1
