ICC Champions Trophy - 6th match, Qualifying Group

Sri Lanka v West Indies

Sri Lanka won by 9 wickets (with 220 balls remaining)

Under a burning sun, Brian Lara won the toss and chose to bat first. The square looks a bit dry and Lara would be hoping to pile on some runs first. Mahela Jayawardene, however, said he would have chosen to bowl had he won the toss. So both teams seem to be happy with the result and hopefully, we shall witness a cracker of a contest.

I am Sriram Veera, and along with George Binoy, shall bring you the live commentary for the day.

West Indies will look to Chris Gayle and Shivnarine Chanderpaul to get them off to a great start. "Chris has always had a great influence," said Lara yesterday. "He's a key member of our team the way he bats, bowls and fields. It's very important that he hits his straps, especially batting at the top of the order. It's very important for us that he or [Shivnarine] Chanderpaul carries on. One of the top four have to bat the full fifty overs, and Chris has done that for us on occasion."

Right, here come the Sri Lankans, behind the umpires and ahead of the West Indies' openers, Gayle and Chanderpaul.

0.1

Vaas to Gayle, no run, Drama straightaway. Gayle shoulders to a delivery that comes in with the angle to rap him on the pads. Slips go up in appeal but Gayle was outside the off stump. And there was little puff of dust where the ball landed. And this is just the first ball.

Two slips and a point in place.

0.2

Vaas to Gayle, no run, beaten. That one landed on a length on the off stump and left Gayle. Vaas is right on the money here.

0.3

Vaas to Gayle, 1 no ball, length delivery on the off stump, pushed to the off side

0.3

Vaas to Gayle, no run, That one didn't bounce much. sailed harmless outside the off stump.

0.4

Vaas to Gayle, OUT, Vaas strikes early. Gayle is drawn into a fatal push outside offstump and Kumar Sangakkara swooped low to his left to pick up the catch. Gayle tarried briefly to get the confirmation from the umpires that it did carry cleanly before walking off. It landed just short of a driveable length around the off stump and bent away a bit.

CH Gayle c †Sangakkara b Vaas 0 (4m 5b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

0.5

Vaas to Sarwan, no run, Sarwan survives a huge shout for lbw. It pitched on a length on the leg and middle and veered towards the leg stump. Sarwan went back, rather than forward, and his bat came down in a angle but the ball was going down leg. Only just.

0.6

Vaas to Sarwan, no run, Similar delivery, similar shot but luckily, for Sarwan, there is a inside-edge this time.

What a start for Sri Lanka.

1.1

Malinga to Chanderpaul, 1 no ball, Fidel Edwards starts off with a no ball.

1.1

Malinga to Chanderpaul, no run

1.2

Malinga to Chanderpaul, no run, pushed to mid-off. Edwards is slowly getting his radar right. From outside leg to around off stump.

1.3

Malinga to Chanderpaul, no run, this one was on the middle, worked to the on side.

1.4

Malinga to Chanderpaul, FOUR, Chanderpaul gets off the mark with a flicked-four past square-leg. Fullvand on the legs.

1.5

Malinga to Chanderpaul, (no ball) FOUR, Malinga again drifts on the legs and Chanderpaul flicks it behind square again. Easy pickings.

1.5

Malinga to Chanderpaul, no run, fullish and outside off, Chanderpaul goes for a drive, but too much bottom-hand and the bat handle rotates in his hand. The ball rolls towards mid-on

1.6

Malinga to Chanderpaul, no run, Finally the over ends after a series of no-balls and a wide. This one, full and on the off stump, is pushed away to cover

2.1

Vaas to Sarwan, OUT, Got him! Vaas threatened to do this off the last two balls of the previous over but gets his man this time. He shifted his line towards the middle and that did the trick. It landed on a length and bent back in and Sarwan was caught at his crease. Feet went no where and now they will take him to the hutch.

2.2

Vaas to Lara, no run, Hmm... quite similar ball, again curves away after pitching on a length, Lara leans forward and gets his bat around his front pad to push it to the on side.

2.3

Vaas to Lara, no run, curving away outside off, left alone

2.4

Vaas to Lara, no run, That exaggerated forward defense by Lara. He leans forward to a delivery outside off and makes every effort to get behind the line, head over the ball to dead bat it away

2.5

Vaas to Lara, 1 no ball

2.5

Vaas to Lara, no run, Nice little outswinger that draws Lara further away from where he wanted to be when he went for a drive. Lara adjusts by taking one hand off the bat-handle and drives it towards point

2.6

Vaas to Lara, no run, And again. This time Lara tries to go through with his square drive but gets a inside edge.

3.1

Malinga to Chanderpaul, OUT, And now Malinga strikes. After a wayward first over he produces a peach to remove Chanderpaul. A length-delivery around the off stump draws Chanderpaul towards the ball but it left him at the last minute and took a bit of outside edge enroute to Sangakkara. West Indies are reeling here. They won the toss, but so far its all Sri Lanka.

3.3

4.1

Vaas to Hinds, no run, Went for the dream outswinger, the one that swings from middle and leg. To his credit Hinds didn't look to play it to the on side, chose to wait for the swing and albeit a bit ungainly, pushed it to off side

4.2

Vaas to Hinds, 1 wide, Vaas goes for the one that comes in, but ends up dragging it down the leg

4.2

Vaas to Hinds, no run, almost gets his radar right this time. Again it comes in and Hinds falls over a bit in his attempt to flick it and is rapped on the pads. But it was going down leg.

4.3

Vaas to Hinds, no run, leans forward to a fullish delivery on the off to push it away to the off side.

Hinds is now standing just outside the crease, obviously to counter the swing.

4.4

Vaas to Hinds, no run, stretches outside off to reach a outswinger and pushes it towards point

4.5

Vaas to Hinds, no run, well outside the off stump, moves further away, and Hinds lets it go through to Sangakkara

8.5

Vaas to Lara, no run, lovely length delivery outside off stump. i use that adjective as it appeared to be a replica of the previous one when he let it go. But this time he had dragged back the length and Lara adjusted well to play it quietly to the off side.

8.6

10.4

Vaas to Lara, no run, Lara thrusts his right foot out to drive a fullish ball outside off to cover

10.5

Vaas to Lara, no run, Huge shout for a lbw decision. That one was close. It came in from outside off and Lara falls over a bit, his bat comes down in an angle and is rapped on the stumps. It would have taken out the middle. Hawk eye confirms. Plus no inside edge as well. Lucky break for Lara. Lara did the smart thing by fleeing the crime scene as quickly as possible! He shuffled his feet quickly to outside the off stump, and that must have thrown some doubt in the umpire (Asad Rauf)'s mind

Maharoof will have a bowl now.

12.1

Maharoof to Lara, no run, Another appeal for lbw against Lara. It just pitched on the leg stump line and went straight on and Lara ends up playing outside the line and is hit in front of leg stump. Perhaps, the umpire thought it pitched outside the line. The tracker shows it landed just inside. Tough call.

14.3

Maharoof to Lara, no run, just short of length on the off, Lara cuts but can't beat point

14.4

Maharoof to Lara, FOUR, Again the slowness of this pitch beats an intended stroke. Lara went for a drive through the off side ring but it stops on him and the inside edge takes it past square-leg

14.5

Maharoof to Lara, OUT, Lara is out. After negating two close shouts Asad Rauf uphelds this one. It landed on a length on the middle and straightened. Lara shaped up to cut and is cramped. Tries desperately to bring his bat in front of his pad but it thuds into his front pad. Would have hit the top of the middle. West Indies are bleeding here.

Sri Lanka have dismissed West Indies for 80 in just 30.4 overs. Maharoof was easily the best bowler, finishing with 6 for 14, the best figures in Champions Trophy history. Chaminda Vaas also bowled an excellent spell early on and took two early wickets.

It was by no means a terrible pitch, just a slow one that required grafting, and West Indies came a cropper. Do join us for Sri Lanka's chase. It should be a short one unless West Indies can pull off something even Harry Houdini would be proud of.
