ICC Champions Trophy - 13th match, Group B

South Africa v Sri Lanka

South Africa won by 78 runs

Hello, and welcome to Cricinfo's live coverage of the seventh match in this Champions Trophy. This is Jamie Alter, here to bring you the commentary in the company of Sriram Veera.

Today's encounter is between Sri Lanka and South Africa at the Sardar Patel Stadium in Motera, just outside Ahmedabad which, incidentally, is the largest city in the state of Gujarat and the seventh largest city in India. But enough history, lets get down to what we're really all here for - the match!

Toss: Sri Lanka have won the toss and will be bowling first. Dilhara Fernando, the fast bowler, has been brought in place of Chamara Kapugedera. South Africa have no issue bowling under the lights, and they seem prepared for the dew factor. They have one change as well - AB de Villiers comes in for Andrew Hall.

Where the teams stand: Another defeat for South Africa, who lost their opening game to New Zealand, would end their hopes of reaching the semi-final stage. And as for Sri Lanka, a loss today would mean that they need to rely on Pakistan winning all their matches. Then there's the run rate factor: Sri Lanka could only go the distance if their run rate was superior to that of South Africa and New Zealand.

Here's what the captains had to say on the eve of this clash -

Graeme Smith: "We need to grind a little more. Adapting to the pitch is the key for us. Whether you bowl first or bat first, you've got to be able to adapt to conditions as quickly as possible. Probably the conditions here [in Ahmedabad] will suit Sri Lanka more, but it doesn't mean we can't beat them."

Mahela Jayawardene: "We know that it's a crucial game for us, it's more like a quarter-final. We have already played a match here earlier and we are hoping to derive some positives out of it."

The pitch: As Anand Vasu, Cricinfo's man during both sides' warm-up yesterday, noted, "The pitch had just a tinge of green on it - not the kind of grass that would make it a seaming bunsen, but the kind that would hold it together and ensure that the top didn't come off, as it did when South Africa went down to New Zealand in Mumbai." Interesting. Something Smith and Co. can take heart from? There's also the dew factor, which encouraged Jayawardene to have a bowl.

Head-to-head: This is close stuff. Of the 43 times the teams have come across each other, Sri Lanka have won 21, South Africa 20, with one tie and one no result. AND....in neutral countries in the subcontinent, South Africa have a clean 4-0 record. Hmmm.

Like Rob Thomas crooned in his hit single with Santana, "Smooth" - man, its a hot one. There's going to be a lot of refreshments being asked for by the players.

With that, lets get to the action. That Australian duo, Daryl Harper and Simon Taufel, are out in the middle, the Sri Lankans are taking their places on the field, and here come South Africa's openers, Graeme Smith and Boeta Dippenaar. Chaminda Vaas will take the new ball, Smith to face.

Let's roll!

South Africa were choked through the innings till Peterson and Pollock tried to break free with a few biffed hits but 220-run target shouldn't, in theory, make Sri Lanka sweat. But, remember the stat fact that in the neutral countries in the subcontinent, South Africa have a clean 4-0 record against Sri Lanka. Join us in 40 minutes for the run chase

End of over 50 (10 runs) South Africa 219/9
M Ntini    1* (1b)      SL Malinga    9-0-53-4
SM Pollock    21* (17b 1x6)      MF Maharoof    5-0-34-0
