ICC Champions Trophy - 1st semi final

Australia v New Zealand

Australia won by 34 runs

Hello and welcome to Cricinfo's continuing coverage of the 2006 Champions Trophy. This is your commentator Jamie Alter once again, and I'll be joined by Sriram Veera later in the day.

The match: the first semi-final, between Australia and New Zealand. The venue: the Punjab Cricket Assocation Stadium in Mohali. The scenario: Its a doozy - the winner goes to the final.

The toss: New Zealand has won the toss and Stephen Fleming has opted to bowl first. The big news: Shane Bond is in. Scott Styris' injury has brought Hamish Marshall back into the XI. Australia have fielded the same side that trumped India to make this stage. That equates to four fast bowlers and Shane Watson opening the innings.

The pitch: This is a surface favouring pace, hence Fleming's decision to bowl. Its the same on on which Pakistan were bowled out for a paltry 89 against South Africa. Ian Chappell describes it as having "browned off" after that much, and there isnt as much lateral movement off the pitch. The spray applied to the outfield is believed to have worked insofar as keeping the dew to a minimal goes.

The lowdown: We don't need to remind you - Australia have never gone beyond this stage of the tournament in eight years of its existence. New Zealand have won this before. And these two sides share a storied rivalry.

As my colleague Siddhartha Vaidyanathan pointed out in his match preview yesterday, Australia have won 15 of the last 17 matches played against New Zealand. Australia have romped home by a margin of 40 runs or more on seven occasions. Enough said.

But New Zealand, having won the 2000 edition of this tournament, can carry the confidence of their wins to get them this far. And then there's Bond. In six games against Australia, he's knocked over 22 wickets at a stunning average of 10.45 and has been part of a winning side in three of the six clashes.

They said: Ricky Ponting: "We expect to win every game but we're not always going to do that. We've had our backs to the wall and we've enjoyed that. This game is a great challenge but no more than the last couple of weeks."

Stephen Fleming: "Australia will say we place more emphasis on it than they do but there's every reason to be excited about this clash."

Right-o, we're set for some action. The umpires, Steve Bucknor and Rudi Koertzen, are out in the middle, as are the New Zealanders. Kyle Mills will do duty with the new ball. Here come the Australian openers, Gilchrist and Watson. Play ball, signals Koertzen!
