ICC Champions Trophy - Final

Australia v West Indies

Australia won by 8 wickets (with 41 balls remaining) (D/L method)

Hello, hello, wherever you are! You've tuned in to Cricinfo's coverage of the 2006 Champions Trophy final, a much-awaited clash between Australia and West Indies at Mumbai's Brabourne Stadium. This is Jamie Alter, and I'll be joined in a while by Sriram Veera to bring you every delivery - four, six, wicket, whatever - as it happens. This it it, we've reached the big day!

The toss: Brian Lara has won the toss, taken a good look at the pitch, and decided to bat first. Corey Collymore comes into the side in place of Dwayne Smith. Australia have dropped Mitchell Johnson for Brad Hogg, the specialist spinner.

The pitch: Its dry and hard, but the curator says there will be good bounce and carry, with the pitch slowing down later in the day. Its a humid day, and word is that the dew will not be a factor. This is the venue at which West Indies beat Australia by 10 runs, but also where they were bowled out for 80 by Sri Lanka. The pitch is the one that Graeme Smith complained about.

The teams:The West Indies, who had to qualify to make the league round, remember, are a resurgent side. One man stands tall - Chris Gayle. 437 runs and eight wickets at an economy rate of less than four an over show you just how crucial he has been, and will need to be today. He's got successive centuries, against England and South Africa, behind him, but I'm pretty sure he'll remember a first-ball duck against Australia in the DLF Cup final not too long ago. His contributions have been paramount to his side's success in this tournament. He goes, and....

Now to the favourites. Australia have never won the Champions Trophy, but England, India and New Zealand have been swept aside without too much bother in this tournament. Its known pretty well that once they reach finals, Australia don't usually lose them. This is a hard unit, and they'll come harder at West Indies.

They said:

Ricky Ponting: "We have probably won more one-day finals, one-day tournaments, and World Cups than any other team... certainly a lot more than the West Indies have. We know what it takes to win big games and we will see how the West Indian players will cope under pressure."

Brian Lara: "It's been tremendous. I love the tag unpredictable, which means that no opposition, no matter how strong they are can think that they're going to roll us over. Of course Australia are the favourites. They're world champions, No. 1 in the world, going into the match you'd be unwise to think otherwise. We're looking to excel and carry that through to the final."

Okay, here we go. The umpires, Aleem Dar and Rudi Koertzen, are all set. Brett Lee to bowl to Shivnarine Chanderpaul. Buckle up, folks, the final is on!

What a calypso collapso. Great start, it was raining fours and sixes but couple of wickets and suddenly it was a heavy downpour of wickets as Australia stormed their way back. It will be just a 10 minutes break, so please don't go away anywhere.

Bracken quote on that Gayle wicket Just said on air. Apparently he was running in with the idea of bowling a slower ball. Suddenly, at the last minute he decided to go for that late outswinger! Bulls eye!
