ICC Champions Trophy - 2nd semi final

New Zealand v Pakistan

New Zealand won by 5 wickets (with 13 balls remaining)

2.28pm: Kamran and Nazir walk out. The sun's out.

2.25pm: The national anthems are on. Back to the inbox.

Bazish: "I see 40% chances of rain in Johannesburg, and i am concerned more about the performance of the pakistan cricket team.. because if there is no match, New Zealand through to the finals."

2.15pm: Fifteen minutes to go. Wasim Akram and Simon Doull reckon there will be plenty of runs scored tonight. The fast bowlers might enjoy the conditions for the first five overs or so.

Time to catch up with the inbox.

Asim: "I think its good that Pakistan didn't go for 4 pace bowlers.. Pitch is not fresh so two spinners are must."

Salman: "Maybe Younis should have opened with Akmal, then Asif could have replaced Imran Nazir. On a batting track, you don't need such long batting line up anyway."

Toss and teams: Vettori spins, Younis Khan has won the toss and Pakistan will bat first.

When asked about the team composition, Younis chuckles and replies: "We'll I'm unfit, but I'm still playing." Mohammad Aamer returns. We'll have the full teams up shortly. For New Zealand, Aaron Redmond has gotten over his jet lag and he replaces Gareth Hopkins.

Spot trivia: Jet lag is otherwise known as 'circadian rhythm stress' or desynchronosis.

Back to the cricket, just to reconfirm the teams. Two changes for Pakistan - Aamer comes in for Asif and Imran Nazir replaces Misbah-ul-Haq. Grant Elliott is fit for play today. The teams will be updated above shortly.

I'm a little disappointed that Asif has been omitted. I missed the last game and I was told he bowled an excellent second spell. Anyway, this bowling attack looks quite potent.

1.45pm: It's the second semi-final of the Champions Trophy between New Zealand and Pakistan at Johannesburg. Good morning/afternoon/evening wherever you are and welcome to Cricinfo's coverage of this day-night match. Time for introductions. This is Kanishkaa Balachandran and I'll take you through the first 25 overs. Siddarth Ravindran will take over for the remainder of the innings.

The toss is about 15 minutes away. All talks so far has been of the pitch. The experts have described it as a belter for batting. Win the toss, pile on the runs but don't sit back and relax on the field. The team chasing might just upstage you.

Lots to read. Here's the preview, and Younis Khan's quotes about winning another cup for his people and Vettori speaking about breaking the semi-final jinx.

47.2

Mills to Saeed Ajmal, no run, again tips it to cover point, charges down for a single this time, sent back wisely by Aamer

Nick from New Zealand: "New Zealand took their batting powerplay just after their first powerplay in the last match against England to continue their assault on the English openers. At the time it was the perfect time to take it."

47.3

Mills to Saeed Ajmal, 1 run, slashes at a ball well outside off, gets an edge to third man which brings Aamer on strike

Mike from the Netherlands: "The only thing Powerplays are gonna do if you take them with your batsmen set but still 20 overs to go, is get your set batsmen out as they'll go for the big shots. That then leaves unset batsmen and tailenders to bat out the remaining 20 overs. If you take it late, the tail would have been licensed to hit, but if you take it early and get out (and mind you, people get out in Powerplays) the tail has to bat properly. It's way better to keep your set batsmen just batting normally, and take it late when if they get out, you don't take the risk of not batting out the overs. "

47.4

Great work from Pakistan's final pair but overall New Zealand should be happy with their bowling effort. There aren't too many devils in this pitch, and Pakistan's bowlers need to be at their best to keep New Zealand from the final.

One of the bright spots for Pakistan was young Umar Akmal, who made a brisk half-century when the rest of his side struggled to push on. The dodgy lbw decision against him cost Pakistan, but questions will have to be asked of the approach of Pakistan's other frontline batsmen.

Btw, Umar Akmal's dismissal was Vettori's 250th wicket, and Butler's 4 for 44 is his career-best figures.
