Tom Taylor was regarded as one of the outstanding allrounders of the 18th century. A hitter rather than, as was more common, a stonewaller with the bat, a good bowler and one of the finest cover fielders, he made his debut in 1775 and played for Hampshire and Berkshire. In 1786 he scored a hundred for White Conduit Club in the same innings as Tom Walker also made a hundred, rare instances at the time. An innkeeper by profession, he ran the Globe Inn at Alresford from 1787 until his death.
