Border-Gavaskar Trophy - 1st Test

India v Australia

India won by 1 wicket

Overs 1-50  | Overs 51-100  | Overs 101-150  | Overs 151-200

Right! The players are out there. Zaheer has the ball - he had a tough time in the Champs League, will he be up for this? Watson and Katich are out there. Three slips in place. Sparse crowd, should build up over the weekend, especially when India bats.

Nitesh is not too fond of the seam line-up. "Shanthakumaran "Reverse-Swing" Sreesanth would had been way better choice than Ishant "Run like a giraffe and throw half way down the pitch" Sharma, any day!" Wicked that.

Ananthamurthy sends in the kind of comment that can warm all our hearts. "Thank God for Test Cricket. India playing Australia, in a Test; I would follow it even if my pants caught fire, never mind Ayodhya, Betting Scandals, CWG mess and what not." Sundeep asks a pertinent question. "When was the last time that Aus hadn't won against a team for SIX tests in a row?" Anyone got the answers? Sydney 2008 was the last time Australia beat India. India have won three of the six ensuing Tests, in Perth, Mohali and Nagpur. The three other games - Adelaide, Bangalore and Delhi - have been draws. MS Dhoni is yet to lose a Test series as captain of India.

Paul: "Ahhh...Australia vs India! Nothing like it to inspire a bit of intra-office rivalry! We're in Brisbane, a ball hasn't been bowled yet & already my mate and I are arguing with my Indian co-worker about the pitch, the series result and Harbhajan Singh. Love it! "

9.20 Several legends will be in action during this series, some of them could make it to ESPNcricinfo's All-time XI. Picked yours yet? Click here and get cracking.

I am Nitin Sundar, starting off the commentary and will be joined by George Binoy later in the day. Peter English is on the bulletin. Sanjay Murari and Venkat Raghav are on scoring duties.

9.10 India won't be happy with the toss. Dhoni has had a sublime run of luck at the toss in the Champions League, but not such luck in international cricket - he lost most of the tosses in Sri Lanka, including the tri-series final, and all three Tests. India's half-strength bowling attack struggled to make inroads in those Tests, leaving the batsmen to chase the game more often than not. They have their first-choice attack for this game, and will hope to do better.

Toss: Ponting wins the toss and Australia will bat. "Preparation has been great, guys are in great physical shape, and we had a good practice time. India v Aus is one of the great series of our times, hopefully this one is no different. Three quicks and Hauritz - Bollinger comes back straight from the Champs League." The three quicks will be Hilfenhaus, who had a great practice game, Johnson and Bollinger. This series is a huge test for Hauritz.

Dhoni admits he would have liked to bat too. "Players have done this (switching from T20 to ODIs to Tests) often recently.. We have had a couple of days of practice, we have made the best of it. Hope to keep the controversies away and play some good, hard cricket. Harbhajan is playing." Sreesanth, Vijay, Pujara and Mishra miss out, so India are playing a two seamer - two spinner attack. Zaheer, Ishant, Harbhajan and Ojha are the frontline bowlers.

Several sub-plots to watch out for when these two sides clash. Ricky Ponting v Rahul Dravid is one of them - two of the best No. 3s of all-time, but not having the best of times recently. S Rajesh has more in the Numbers Game. Harsha Bhogle, in his column, says a battle of this proportion merits a four-match series.

8.55 Pitch report: Ravi Shastri reckons the pitch will get lower and slower as the game progresses. There has been a lot of rain in the lead-up to the game - no clouds in sight now, mind you - and the pitch has slowed up a bit as a result. Daljit Singh, the curator, says it will not have the "usual Mohali pace and bounce, but it will improve as the game progresses".

8.50 The big news in the lead-up to this game is Harbhajan Singh's niggle, and talks that he may miss out. Stay tuned for more. Meanwhile, here is Brydon Coverdale's preview. Over the last ten years, Australia have lost more Tests to India than they have won. That is saying something, considering Australia were the world's best team for most of that time. India are the only team that can boast of this record over Australia for the decade. During that period, Australia are the only team to have beaten India in a series at home. Fasten your seatbelts folks!

It's time for Test match cricket. And it's time for that match-up again. Hello and welcome to the most enduring battle of the last decade, one that us given some of the most unforgettable Test action in that time. It's time for India v Australia.

In 2001, we ran into Matty Hayden and Harbhajan Singh. We were also treated to probably the best innings of our times. In 2003, we bid adieu to Steve Waugh, but we also saw epics from Rahul Dravid and Ricky Ponting as India drew level with the world's best Test XI. The empire struck back in India, in 2004, and the hosts had no aswers against McGrath, Gillespie and co. as they lost 2-1 at home. Then came 2007, and one of the most bitter Test series of all, but not without its share of pristine on-field action. India overcame one of their most dispiriting losses in Sydney, and thanks to that man Laxman, and that other man Dravid, pulled one back in Perth. 2008 was all India's, with Zaheer and Ishant bullying Australia at home, while Gautam Gambhir served notice and VVS Laxman did what he does best. Anil Kumble and Sourav Ganguly brought the curtains down on glittering careers with a satisfying win. Now we have 2010 upon us. As Sid Monga puts it, here's to new rivalries. First Test coming up soon, toss in 10 minutes.

0.1

Khan to Watson, no run, starts with a nice delivery, back of a length angling across Watson who is a little tentative but plays inside the line

0.2

Khan to Watson, 1 run, Sehwag at gully has put him down. Wide half-volley, Watson leans out and looks to square drive, can't keep it down, Sehwag had to jump, not too high, and got both hands to it easy, but could not hold on. Single taken

0.3

Khan to Katich, no run, back of a length outside Katich's off stump and he lets it go

0.4

Khan to Katich, no run, hint of away swing, and very poor carry. Landed on a length and bounced again before it reached Dhoni. Katich lets it go

0.5

Khan to Katich, no run, a hint of seam, and some posthumous seam (as Sid Vaidyanathan would have said) after it crosses the stumps. Dhoni tumbles away to take it

0.6

Khan to Katich, no run, loses the line a touch and it slides down the leg side

End of over 1 (1 run) Australia 1/0
SM Katich    0* (4b)      Z Khan    1-0-1-0
SR Watson    1* (2b)

Tony Collins: "Up at 5am in London to watch this. It appears my dedication to test cricket is more than the local fans." True that, the ground looks really unoccupied. Zaheer is off after that over. Vijay substitutes for him. Ishant to bowl the second over. Big drop that from Sehwag in the first over, Watson will look to make it count.

1.1

Sharma to Watson, no run, another ball rolls along. Worrying signs on day one, landed on a length well outside off and did not go over ankle-height

1.2

Sharma to Watson, no run, better carry this time, comes in with the angle from wide of the crease, Watson lets it go and Dhoni collects it around shin high

1.3

Sharma to Watson, no run, double bouncer again. lands on a length outside off and Dhoni takes it after the second bounce.

1.4

Sharma to Watson, no run, better carry this time, not much movement for Ishant, but he is getting that angle that Watson does not line, from outside off. He lets it go

1.5

Sharma to Watson, no run, and again, Ishant is working up a bit of pace and Watson is not looking to play anything that is not pitched up to him. Lets it go outside off

1.6

Sharma to Watson, no run, good ball to finish the over, a hint of inward movement, Watson has to play this time and gets well behind the line

End of over 2 (maiden) Australia 1/0
SR Watson    1* (8b)      I Sharma    1-1-0-0
SM Katich    0* (4b)      Z Khan    1-0-1-0

Zaheer is back, so that was probably nature's call that took him out for an over.

2.1

Khan to Katich, no run, nice shape from Zaheer, starts from outside off as Katich shuffles across. He lets it go

2.2

Khan to Katich, 2 runs, looks to make him play, lands it on middle and off and it straightens a touch. Katich's shuffle gets him in line with the ball and he tucks it to the leg side for a couple

2.3

Khan to Katich, no run, outside off again, Katich looks to work it from there to the leg side. The bounce continues to be ordinary.

2.4

Khan to Katich, no run, good shape again, but from too wide outside off. And it is a half-volley to Dhoni

Empty stands and a pitch with no bounce. So far, this is doing little justice to Aus v Ind.

2.5

Khan to Katich, no run, good ball, pitches this up on middle and leg and gets that curve away from the left hander. Katich stays in the crease and works it against the shape towards mid on

2.6

Khan to Katich, no run, pulls the length back a touch and it is outside off. Katich is not getting drawn into these.

End of over 3 (2 runs) Australia 3/0
SM Katich    2* (10b)      Z Khan    2-0-3-0
SR Watson    1* (8b)      I Sharma    1-1-0-0

3.1

Sharma to Watson, no run, length ball outside off to Watson, yorker to Dhoni on the second bounce. Watson lets it go, Dhoni digs it out.

3.2

Sharma to Watson, no run, Ishant is not really putting much body into his deliveries, and the pitch is not offering him much carry either. Length ball outside off, Watson leaves it and Dhoni collects at knee height

3.3

Sharma to Watson, 1 no ball, and he over-steps this time. Watson gets behind the line and defends into the covers

Gareth: "I can tell you Aussie cricket fans have been waiting with anticipation. I must admit, i know this is India's best XI, but i really wanted to see young Pujara take the side. I think special series like this give birth to true champion players. I hope i don't have to wait too long to see him reach Test cricket."

3.3

Sharma to Watson, no run, appeal for lbw turned down. Ishant attacks the stumps from wide of the crease, it is pitched up on off stump and strikes Watson in front of middle and leg as he looks to flick. That was surely going down the leg, so Umpire Bowden has got it right

3.4

Sharma to Watson, 1 no ball, another no-ball. Back of a length outside off and Watson defends nicely off the back foot

3.4

Sharma to Watson, no run, floats this one well outside off and Watson reaches out, but shoulders arms

3.5

Sharma to Watson, no run, good ball this, jags in from a length and Watson is tentative as he prods off neither front, nor back foot. Inside edge trickes to Sachin at square-leg.

Swarooph: "Crowd is missing, Is everybody in Mohali busy watching Superstar's Robot first day first show?" (For the benefit of non-Indian readers, that is the name of a much-anticipated movie that is releasing today.

3.6

Sharma to Watson, FOUR, crisp! First four of the day, comes in again from outside off, but this one is pitched a foot further up. Watson gets forward nicely, covers the line and drives to the left of mid on

End of over 4 (6 runs) Australia 9/0
SR Watson    5* (16b 1x4)      I Sharma    2-1-6-0
SM Katich    2* (10b)      Z Khan    2-0-3-0

4.1

Khan to Katich, FOUR, and now Katich has got a boundary. Zaheer pitches it up on off stump and he drives it with authority, through the covers.

4.2

Khan to Katich, OUT, Zaheer has nailed Katich and India have a wicket here. Good variation from Zaheer, he has been moving them away most of the time, but he gets this one to duck into Katich, who is caught on the move as he shuffles across and looks to work it to the leg side. Hits him in front of off and it was crashing into middle and leg.

SM Katich lbw b Khan 6 (21m 12b 1x4 0x6) SR: 50.00

Ponting walks out. Can't really test him with the bouncer on this pitch.

4.3

Khan to Ponting, no run, pitches it well up from over the stumps, Ponting moves forward and across to cover the line and defends

4.4

Khan to Ponting, FOUR, well, Ponting has been troubled by the short ball recently, so Zaheer slips one in. On this pitch, Ponting has no problem though, moves back and across and slams the pull shot along to square leg.

4.5

Khan to Ponting, no run, good length, Ponting might have expected another bouncer, but Zaheer pitches this up and Ponting picks the length a touch late. But he manages to get behind the line and play it to mid on

4.6

Khan to Ponting, no run, beaten outside off to end the over, holds it line and angles across Ponting from the uncomfortable, neither full nor short, length. Ponting plays at it without conviction and misses

End of over 5 (8 runs) Australia 17/1
RT Ponting    4* (4b 1x4)      Z Khan    3-0-11-1
SR Watson    5* (16b 1x4)      I Sharma    2-1-6-0

5.1

Sharma to Watson, no run, short ball, Ishant is getting that angle going into the right hander, can he get one of those leg cutters away now? Watson stays back and defends

5.2

Sharma to Watson, no run, and again, fuller and coming in off the seam. Watson gets nicely behind the line and defends down the ground

5.3

Sharma to Watson, 1 no ball, that's Ishant's third no-ball of the morning. Back of good length outside off and Watson lets it through to the keeper

Madhu, our stats man: "India have won 30 and lost 26 matches after losing the toss at home, since 2000 however, they have won 13 and lost 5. Against Australia though, overall home and away since 2000, they have won 3 and lost 5 after losing the toss."

Silly mid-on in place.

5.3

Sharma to Watson, 1 run, pitched up on off and Watson drops it to the off side and takes off for a quick single

Ponting asks for a middle stump guard. And faces up to the man who made his reputation by troubling him two seasons ago.

5.4

Sharma to Ponting, no run, back of a length and well outside off, Ponting is on the backfoot as he chooses to let it go

5.5

Sharma to Ponting, no run, length this time, draws Ponting into the drive and he plays it cautiously towards point

5.6

Sharma to Ponting, no run, well bowled to end the over. Gets that sharp inward movement off the seam, Ponting, as he always does, moves forward with intent as that comes into him and gets an inside edge towards midwicket.

End of over 6 (2 runs) Australia 19/1
RT Ponting    4* (7b 1x4)      I Sharma    3-1-8-0
SR Watson    6* (20b 1x4)      Z Khan    3-0-11-1

Zaheer to continue.

6.1

Khan to Watson, FOUR, another bouncer from Zaheer, he really put something into it this time and it rose to around chest height as it angled across Watson, but this pitch is slow enough for him to patch on with a pull shot. Pulled from wide outside off to square leg

6.2

Khan to Watson, 1 run, pitches it up on and outside off, Watson tips to the off side and turns the strike. There will be a lot of singles and twos on this pitch, with the ball not really coming on to the bat

6.3

Khan to Ponting, 2 runs, good stuff from Zaheer, catches Ponting amidships with that in-between length and a hint of away movement. Ponting is square up a touch as he opens the face and gets a thick outside edge through the cordon

6.4

Khan to Ponting, no run, more authoritative footwork this time, Ponting reaches out to a fuller ball outside off, but lets it go

6.5

Khan to Ponting, no run, length again, angling across the right hander who is back and across. Defended to the off side

Aditya: "The last time Aus toured India, Ganguly retired. Wonder how many of the fab 3 who are left will be playing the next Ind-Aus series. This is so nostalgic...so hard to imagine an Ind-Aus series without Sachin, Dravid..and more importantly..VVS..."

6.6

Khan to Ponting, no run, back of a length outside off, and Ponting is on the front foot. That is not a bad plan on this pitch. Defended into the off side

End of over 7 (7 runs) Australia 26/1
RT Ponting    6* (11b 1x4)      Z Khan    4-0-18-1
SR Watson    11* (22b 2x4)      I Sharma    3-1-8-0

7.1

Sharma to Watson, no run, over-pitched on middle and leg, Watson defends towards the leg side

7.2

Sharma to Watson, no run, moves it back to outside off stump and it comes in with the angle. Watson shoulders arms and it goes through to Dhoni

7.3

Sharma to Watson, no run, interesting shot that, angles in from short of good length outside off, Watson goes back and looks to play a limited-overs shot by opening the face. Angles it on the bounce into the slips

7.4

Sharma to Watson, no run, good line and length, just outside off, drawing Watson forward but he lets it go early

7.5

Sharma to Watson, 1 run, Watson steals another single, drops it from off stump line wide of mid off and turns the strike over to his captain

Only two slips in place now, apart from gully and silly mid on.

7.6

Sharma to Ponting, no run, good stuff, again that inward movement from outside off, Ponting is forced to play around it after pushing onto the front foot. Gets it away off the inside half to the leg side

End of over 8 (1 run) Australia 27/1
RT Ponting    6* (12b 1x4)      I Sharma    4-1-9-0
SR Watson    12* (27b 2x4)      Z Khan    4-0-18-1

8.1

Khan to Watson, no run, length delivery on off stump, Watson hets behind the line with assurance and defends into the covers

8.2

Khan to Watson, no run, similar delivery angles into Watson from wide of the crease and he defends to the leg side

Vinci: "Ishant could be a much better bowler if he learns to use the crease properly....and btw, Zaheer has a crazy seam position..almost Godlike!!" If God were a bowler, I believe he would be a legspinner, but that's me. Some problems with the television coverage on Neo Cricket. Hope they sort it out soon.

8.3

Khan to Watson, 1 run

8.4

Khan to Ponting, no run, defended to extra cover for no runs

8.5

Khan to Ponting, no run, again, defended from outside off towards the off side

8.6

9.1

Sharma to Watson, 1 run

And the TV telecast resumes finally.

9.2

Sharma to Ponting, FOUR, over-pitched on leg stump and Pontin has clipped that cleanly behind square on the leg side. That's a gift and that's been encashed.

9.3

Sharma to Ponting, no run, draws him out outside off and Ponting defends it to the off side

9.4

Sharma to Ponting, no run

9.5

Sharma to Ponting, no run, looking for that leg stump line again, Ponting works it off the pads towards the leg side

9.6

Sharma to Ponting, 1 run, ooh, what happened there? Again, leg stump and angling down the leg from Ishant, Ponting gets too far across and can't keep the flick down. Almost on the full to Tendulkar standing well in from the square leg boundary. He takes it on the bounce

End of over 10 (6 runs) Australia 34/1
RT Ponting    11* (20b 2x4)      I Sharma    5-1-15-0
SR Watson    14* (31b 2x4)      Z Khan    5-0-19-1

10.1

Ojha to Ponting, no run, tossed up on middle and straightening, Ponting stays behind the line and defends

10.2

Ojha to Ponting, 1 run, quicker and flatter, beats Ponting int he flight as he plays it from no-man's land. Inside edge into the leg side

10.3

Ojha to Watson, no run, on off stump, pitched up and Watson gets behind the line

Silly point and slip for Watson.

10.4

Ojha to Watson, no run, tossed up again and Watson leans out to defend to the off side

10.5

Ojha to Watson, no run, pulls it back a touch, but Watson reaches out all the same. So far, not much spin on offer and he plays it off the face to covers.

10.6

Ojha to Watson, no run, pitched well up on off stump to finish the over, Watson defends to the offside

End of over 11 (1 run) Australia 35/1
SR Watson    14* (35b 2x4)      PP Ojha    1-0-1-0
RT Ponting    12* (22b 2x4)      I Sharma    5-1-15-0

More stats from Madhu: "Fair drop in Australia's average first innings since 2008- 45 between 2000 and 2007, since 2008 it has dropped to 37.4" Harbhajan Singh comes on, so spin from both ends. Slip, short leg and short midwicket. Ponting to face.

Harbhajan Singh to Ponting, no run, flighted on off stump, Ponting reaches out and defends towards the off side

11.4

Harbhajan Singh to Ponting, 1 run, over-pitched outside off, Ponting drives it gingerly wide of mid off where Ishant does well to collect cleanly and throw towards the non-striker's stumps. Ponting had to hurry in and the stumps were missed in any case.

11.5

Harbhajan Singh to Watson, no run, good length from Harbhajan, sharp bit of turn too as it breaks back in from a length outside off. Watson is tentative as he pokes it out square on the off side

11.6

Harbhajan Singh to Watson, no run, floater on off stump, Watson pushes out and gets a hint of outside edge towards point again. Ponting wants a single, but Watson wisely sends him back

That's drinks on the first session of day one. George Binoy will bring you the rest of the session.

Thanks Nitin. Not the most riveting of sessions to begin the series I'm afraid. For those of you joining us now, Watson was dropped by Sehwag in the first over of the day.

India's spin twins Harbhajan and Kumble top the wicket-takers list against Australia since 2000. Harbhajan with 77 and Kumble with 74, but while Kumble also has 44 wickets away, Harbhajan has 68 wickets at home with seven five fors and three 10 fors.

Ishant's back for another spell, from a different end this time.

12.3

Sharma to Ponting, 1 no ball, atrocious bowling from Ishant, no-ball No. 6, he's landed on the line and skidded over, and what's more that's a catch too. Ponting tried to glance the ball as it strayed down leg side and definitely nicked it to Dhoni, who's frustrated with the bowler. Ponting's been let off here, that was begging to happen, with the number of extras Ishant's bowled

12.3

Sharma to Ponting, 1 run, full on leg stump, Ponting moves across and plays to midwicket

12.4

Sharma to Watson, no run, Ishant's run up and release is lacking in intensity now, he's surely thinking about his landing stride ... Watson defends on the off side

12.6

Sharma to Watson, 2 runs, poor line and length, full on leg stump and Watson flicks powerfully towards deep square leg. Ishant cuts a forlorn figure as he collects his hat and walks to his fielding position after a 19-run over

14.6

Sharma to Ponting, 1 run, Ponting moves back, opens the face, guides the ball towards point, and sprints the single

"I don't think IPL has ruined Ishant. If you see the article by Venkatesh Prasad, recently published in Cricinfo, you will come to know how dedicated he is for the game. I think he is lacking a good guidance from his fellow fast bowlers or coach. I definitely believe, one day or the other Ishant will lead India's pace attack," says Vinayaka.

11.32 am: Who has lunch at 11.30 am? Seriously. To recap the session: Ponting won the toss, Watson was dropped in the first over, Katich was out cheaply, Ishant bowled a bizarre number of no-balls, Ponting was caught off one, Watson was dropped off a legal delivery and Australia are comfortably-placed at 101 for 1.

The pitch hasn't had any bounce at all for India's fast bowlers, Ojha did get some turn but Harbhajan didn't. The turnout has been poor at Mohali as well.

"Does anyone know whether the ticket prices for this game are particularly expensive compared to what the average local fan would be able to afford?" asks Matt. The ticket prices for Test matches in India vary greatly. There are really expensive ones as well as really cheap ones. That isn't the problem.

Here's a fine way to spend the break. Pick your all-time XI of all time.

Nitin Sundar will be back at the start of the second session.

The players are back out. Time for the second session. Zaheer to start off against Ponting. Can he get some movement with this semi-new ball? Or will there be reverse? One slip and gully as he runs in around the wicket.

12.00 pm Thanks George. Right, so India have let off a few big opportunities to make inroads here. India are notoriously slow starters in Test series, and seem to be continuing the trend so far.

Gav: "I'd rather them have the lunch at 11.30 then at 12.30 and risk bad light by the end of they day. Kudos to the BCCI for scheduling that." True that. Light fades away pretty quickly in some parts of India, especially in the east, and in this time of the year, in the north as well.

Dave: "Took your advice and using the lunch break to hammer out an all-time XI. Is Ricky Ponting's omission from the middle order group an oversight or a sick, tasteless joke? I highly doubt he would make my final XI what with Bradman, Richards and co to accommodate but surely he should have been found a place there. Hope someone's head will roll at cricinfo over this haha!" No heads rolling out here! No Steve Waugh in the long list either, and fans from Australia will be a little surprised to see VVS Laxman out of the list as well. That's the way the cookie crumbles - some big names miss out simply because of the rich talent that emerged from their respective countries.

Dan: "The World XI fast bowlers is impossible to pick! Marshal, Holding, Abrose, Lillie, McGrath, Akram ... how can I pick 3 out them!" Agreed. Not easy!

Raj: "Well Matt, the tickets for this match would definitely be cheaper than the new movie released today - Robot!" And Sriram chimes in with this: "No point complaining about low turn-out. Mohali crowd is more suited for T20 and ODIs. We need to restrict Tests to Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Kolkata and Delhi to expect any sort of crowd."
