Robert Brown thinks Watson erred by not converting his start: "This is what you call strangling the opposition, same old Watson, looks good then like the last test just gives it away, looks good while its coming off then look now. " Sreesanth returns. Two slips to Hussey and a gully

50.1

Sreesanth to Hussey, no run, back of a length on leg stump and it jags back into Hussey who plays around it. Good carry too.

50.2

Sreesanth to Hussey, no run, on a length outside off, Hussey stays back to see if there is movement and punches into the covers. Should have been coming forward to it

50.3

Sreesanth to Hussey, no run, half volley outside off, Hussey does not place the off drive past Harbhajan at mid off. Ponting had started for the run and had to hurry back in

50.4

Sreesanth to Hussey, FOUR, drilled. Another shot of authority from Hussey there. That was again over-pitched, on leg stump, Hussey got to the pitch with a half stride and drove it right through Sreesanth for a four. Along the ground, it gathered speed as it purred across the turf

50.5

Sreesanth to Hussey, no run, whoa, false shot and posthumous swing there. Hussey wanted to pull, but it was not short enough for the shot, he missed and it then curled viciously forcing Dhoni to tumble to his right to save it

50.6

Sreesanth to Hussey, 2 runs, fuller on off and Hussey opens the face to run it square past Tendulkar at widish gully for a single

Ojha to Ponting, no run, tossed up on off stump and Ponting reaches out to defend

51.2

Ojha to Ponting, FOUR, this time, Ponting tees off, much like Shane Warne and co. are doing in a golf tournament in Scotland. Tossed up on middle, Ponting got to the pitch and went through with the lofted drive, straight over the bowler's head for four.

51.3

Ojha to Ponting, no run, well bowled, holds it back a touch and gets Ponting to flash airlily off the front foot as it broke away viciously. Dhoni collects and whips the bails, but no damage done

51.4

Ojha to Ponting, no run, covers the line with intent this time and defends

51.5

Ojha to Ponting, no run, lets another big spinner outside off go. Ojha getting some purchase.

51.6

Ojha to Ponting, 2 runs, whoa, what is Ponting doing there? Steps out again, does not reach the pitch and gets an outside edge towards long off as he looks to loft down the ground, just out of the reach of Vijay running back from mid off. Sliding stop prevents the boundary

No official warning yet, mind you.

52.2

Sreesanth to Hussey, no run, back of a length on leg stump, Hussey plays it off the back foot towards the leg side. A touch of inward movement again

52.3

Sreesanth to Hussey, no run, that's a beauty and very smartly done. Sree runs away on his run-up and delivers from wide of the crease, angling it across Hussey who fell for the bait and flashed without being near the pitch. No outside edge though

52.4

Sreesanth to Hussey, 1 run, short outside off and angling across, this time Hussey is back in the crease as he guides it past a diving cover fielder into the outfield for one

52.5

Sreesanth to Ponting, 1 run, good length, short of driving length and forcing Ponting back. He defends to the off side quietly

52.6

Sreesanth to Hussey, no run, again, Sree weaves away at the last moment and bowls from wide of the crease. Lands on leg and angles across. Hussey plays it from the crease from the off stump line to the on side and Sree fields

54.1

Sehwag to Hussey, no run, tossed up on off, Hussey reaches out and plays it defensively

54.2

Sehwag to Hussey, no run, Hussey looks to work it off middle stump line to the leg side for a single

54.3

Sehwag to Hussey, FOUR, almost a chance. Tossed up on off stump and Hussey looks to loft over the substitute Mukund's head at mid off. He leapt high and tried to haul it in, but it still cleared him by a couple of feet or so.

55.4

Sidharth comes up with some logic that I don't follow. "According to the principal of equality of the scores of Hussey and Katich, combined with the strike rate which Hussey is scoring at, he is due to give away his wicket very shortly now." Last over before tea. Sehwag it is.

56.1

Sehwag to Hussey, no run

56.2

Sehwag to Hussey, no run, chips out of the crease and defends a ball flighted on off stump

56.3

Sehwag to Hussey, no run, goes back in the crease this time to defend to the leg side. Hussey is very fidgetty, he wants to steal some singles

56.4

Sehwag to Hussey, no run, very full and very sedately defended down the track

56.5

Sehwag to Hussey, 1 run, short and wide, Hussey rocks back and cuts into the outfield for one

56.6

Sehwag to Ponting, 1 no ball, Sehwag oversteps and one more ball to go for tea.

56.6

Sehwag to Ponting, no run, he doesn't overstep this time, Ponting stays back and works it with the spin off the pads.

Australia head to tea at 189 for 3. A major recovery that after the spinners began with menace in the second session. Hussey has consciously tried to keep things moving along, while Ponting, barring a couple of nervous moments against spin, has looked good. After tea, it will be our wicket-taker Sriram Veera back on commentary. Meanwhile, Peter English's updated bulletin can be read here.

Thanks Nitin. Let's start the session with another Lala story. From that wonderful writer and story teller Ram Guha via Kishore Bhimani: "A wonderful story is told of the arrival of the 1978 Indian team, the first to tour Pakistan in twenty-three years. As the team (which included both Mohinder and Surinder) and its entourage got off the plane, it was met on the tarmac by a bus and a Toyota. As the cricketers and journalists strolled towards the bus, one man strode imperiously towards the car. This was the team's manager, Fathehsinghrao Gaekwad, in his time the ruler of Baroda, art collector, wild-life enthusiast, Member of Parliament and a column of the international jet set. Not surprisingly, the prince assumed the car to be at his disposal. As he approached the Toyota however, he was shooed away by its liveried chauffeur, who pointed towards the bus and firmly said: 'Tum udhar jao. Ye siraf Lala Saheb ke liye hai' (You go there. This is only for the Lala)."

Right. Here we go. The last session of the opening day.

Khan to Hussey, OUT, And he has edged it to that gully fielder! It was a length delivery outside the off stump, Huss reached out, bat away from the body, and edged his drive to right of gully where Sehwag pouches it. Sehwag made that look very easy. Nice soft hands and good reflex. Hussey was looking to be positive today and had made a breezy 34 but he is gone now. Enter Marcus North who is under pressure to score some runs.

Vijay swings around immediately and fires a throw at the non-striker's end. North was trying to lunge back into the crease but the ball missed the stumps and ran away. Had he hit, North would have been run out. Harbhajan had jumped to allow the ball go between his legs towards the stumps and then Bowden manages to side-step out of trouble

Irishman: "Interesting thought about the Ganguly approach. Although I think this innings is beyond trying to keep Ponting on the simple work with the turn on the push-drive: Aussie going to quicken up the pace this innings? "

Aussiejosh: "I hate to dwell in the past but given the opportunity in the 1st test when we had them 8 for and plenty to get do you think Ponting should have attacked with more fielder around the bat earlier? Ojha to North, 1 run, skips down the track and works it to the long-on fielder. They have deep midwicket as well for North.

69.4

Ojha to Ponting, FOUR, Crunched! It was slightly short and Ponting jumps to his back foot and forces it through cover point. Whack!

69.5

Ojha to Ponting, no run, straighter, on the middle stump line, worked to midwicket

69.6

Ojha to Ponting, no run, slower through the air, on the middle stump line, straightens and Ponting stretches forward to defend.

Ponting has looked very solid out there. Easy on the eye. I can't recall too many hurried forward lunges to the spinners. Nice knock so far. Over to Nitin Sundar.

Thanks Sriram Veera. Ushering in the last passage of play with this comment from Reeba. "Overcast conditions forecast for all days of this test?Wonder if Praveen Kumar or Nehra, the sultans of Indian swing bowling, might have been the better option,as horses for courses!" I am a huge fan of the idea of trying Praveen in Tests. Not sure Nehra has the fitness to last an entire Test though.

Sunny Singh: "Watch out guys, my algorithm here says Ponting will get out at 71 +/-2 runs." I want that computer that comes up with these algorithms.

Robert doesn't was to miss the moment: "As an English fan, I hope North scores a hundred here. Then he would retain his place for his Ashes. England would love a weak no. 6."

Sree to bowl. Can he get some swing going? The ball has been maintained beautifully for reverse. One side rough, the other glistening like a polished cherry.

70.1

Sreesanth to North, no run, length ball, angles across the left hander from over the stumps. He lets it go

70.2

Sreesanth to North, no run, and again, gently angled across the left hander. North pushes forward and lets it go. Remember how he got out in the first innings in Mohali? I'm sure he does.

70.3

Sreesanth to North, 1 run, bangs it short and it rises oaround head high. North plays the pull almost compulsively, though he is in no position for the shot. Gets it out towards midwicket safely

70.4

Sreesanth to Ponting, no run, first sign of low bounce for the day. That scooted low from back of a length as Ponting stayed back in the crease looking to defend. Had to quickly bend low to keep it out

70.5

Sreesanth to Ponting, no run, nice shape, but starts from well outside off. Ponting leans out and spots the movement to let it go. Hmm.

70.6

Sreesanth to Ponting, no run, nifty variation from Sree, starts from wide of the crease and straightens from outside off. Ponting is very watchful and lets it go again

71.3

Harbhajan is back. He bowled a couple of poor overs after tea and was taken off. Now is the time to make up for it. Slip and short leg and good friend Ponting facing.

72.1

Harbhajan Singh to Ponting, no run, ah, Ponting looks to drive an off spinner coming in without covering the gap between bat and pad. Extra spin, inside edge, thuds into the pads and dribbles out to the off side

That was a rare loose ball from Ojha that.

75.2

Raina to Ponting, OUT, Raina has removed Ponting, would you believe it! Another conventional offie, lands on and around off stump. Ponting moves across and looks to work it off the pads with the spin and misses. Struck in front of middle and leg. That would have struck leg stump. Ponting is on his way.

85.4

Khan to North, FOUR, huge swing there from Zaheer, it curved away viciously from a full length. North was in no position to drive and edged up flashing a mile away from his body. It flew through the area behind square on the off side. Lucky.

85.5

Khan to North, no run, this is special stuff from Zaheer, he took the last one away, and decided to go the other way with this one. It tails in sharply, headed for North's toes like a guided missile and he does well to keep it out.

Peter English's bulletin for the day is here. Three days to go before we announce the all-time XI. Meanwhile you can pick yours here. On behalf of my strike bowling colleague Sriram Veera, and the rest of us at ESPNcricinfo, this is Nitin Sundar signing off for the day. Do log in later for more stories from Sid Monga. Cheers!

16.39: Bad light stops play and it is stumps. The umpires have seen enough. North barely managed to survive the last two balls and the umpires took another reading and decided to stop play. Dhoni has a quiet word with them - the new rule is that the umpires have the final say and it cannot be offered to the batsmen. That's what happened there.

End of an exciting day of cricket, on a good pitch in front of a good crowd. And lots of high quality action too. Australia go in 285 for 5 - tough to say who is on top, both sides will be reasonably happy. India could have attacked a little more after getting Ponting's wicket, but they won't be too unhappy with the way the day panned out.

9.00 am Hi there. Welcome to the second day's play. It's overcast, a lot more gloomy than last morning. There wasn't much swing on offer yesterday. At least as much as the experts reckoned. It wobbled a bit here and there but nothing that struck you visually. Let's see how it plays today. The pitch will remain slow; its bald and dry.

Determined Ponting left disappointed says Sidharth Monga while Virender Sehwag says India are happy with Australia's score. "The way they started, we thought they might make 350 or so," Sehwag said. "We're especially happy with the wicket that Raina took, when Ponting looked set for a hundred."

Robbo: "For all the comments of how well Paine is doing...I'd still love to see Ronchi get in there. Drinks break

Jon: "Forget Hartley...Matthew Wade from Victoria is a far better gloveman and coming into his own as a bat but haddin will come back in for Ashes, he's from NSW" Ah the good-old Nsw bias eh!

Tomek Holland: "Cain: I don't think the question has ever been whether North can score a ton, it's what he does next game and the game after that is the problem."

Marcus: "why has nobody mentioned the continual slow over rates in the both tests thus far? I have yet to see India bowl anything like the 15 overs an hour that should be bowled?"

Jason: "@ Cain. North can do no wrong in the selectors minds. It is 90% of cricket fans he needs to convince."

Laurie: "at James: Hartley was actually the top scoring keeper in SS in 2009/10. He got 827 runs (avge 48) to Ronchi's 716 (avge 47), and Hartley was named Player of the Tournament as well. Based on overall career record, though, Ronchi edges Hartley (avge 36 to 31). Both are outstanding keepers, and both should feel aggrieved that Paine has got the inside running on a test place based on a bit of one-day form."

Sunil: "Another 50 runs and this might well be the match winning partnership for Aussies! India needs to do something...and do it really quick before they are batted out of the game!"

Tom: "Why all this talk of whether Paine will supplant Haddin? Queensland's Chris Hartley was the Shield player of the year last season and still doesn't get a mention. Oh, I forgot - only players from NSW and Tasmania merit consideration for the national squad."

Ryan Carters is the Victorialn wicket keeper, isnt he? I (this is Sriram Veera here) was watching a CL t20 game in a team hotel bar with Matthew Hayden. He suddenly pointed out that he thinks the victorian keeper ( the game was on the telly there) was good and that he thinks that boy will play for Australia one day. He didn't mention the name then, he just that Victorian keeper, pointing to the telly. So may be another name to watch out for
