Australia in India ODI Series - 2nd ODI

India v Australia

India won by 5 wickets (with 7 balls remaining)

Sriram Veera is on the bulletin today. I am Nitin Sundar, starting off commentary, and will be joined by the Sids Vicious - Ravindran and Talya - later in the day. Venkat Raghav is on scoring.

2.29pm The Indian team runs out into the field. Cricinfo Towers is divided in opinion about India's new colours. Abhishek Purohit and S Rajesh are not too fond of it, while I personally think it is an improvement on the previous kit - a brighter shade of blue. Praveen has the ball. Marsh to face.

2.26pm Here is the India squad for today: Vijay, Dhawan, Kohli, Yuvraj, Dhoni (capt and wk), Raina, Tiwary, Ashwin, Praveen, Vinay, Nehra.

Two debutants, and then Ashwin and Vinay, who have played one ODI each. This is a very inexperienced India side, but on paper, it bats deep.

2.16pm David Warner is not playing today. That leaves me a little disappointed, as I am sure, it does a lot of his fans around the world. Warner, meanwhile, hopes to be the next Gilchrist.

Michael Clarke leads Australia in Ponting's absence. Does he have the material to take over full-time from Punter in the future? This is what Peter Roebuck thinks. David Frith picks an all-time XI that he would field if his life depended on it. It has no Steve Waugh. And no Rahul Dravid. Just saying.

2.00pm Toss The coin rolls and rolls and rolls and falls in favour of MS Dhoni. At long last. India choose to field. "This may be a good toss to win, and fielding will suit our side for today. Ravindra Jadeja is not playing. Two debuts - Shikhar Dhawan and Saurabh Tiwary will play today. We are looking to get a few more guys into our bench."

Clarke: "Not sure what we would have done. There may be dew. We'll look to put some runs and defend well in the night."

So, Ravindra Jadeja is not playing. I don't think any Indian player in recent times has got so much flak from our readers as the Saurashtra scintillator. Want to discuss the teams composition and everthing else about this game? Head to our Facebook page and indulge in some clean, abuse-free debate.

Jesse Hogan of the Age tweets thus: "Two Tweeting debutants for Aus today: @hasto194 and @crats56. Very surprised that Callum Ferguson not getting a run tonight vs India." Possibly since Ferguson is not on Twitter?

1.50pm Ten minutes to the toss. While we wait: Andy Zaltzman, the handy stats-man finds out how many cricketing degrees of separation stand between Julius Caesar and Sachin Tendulkar. Not too many, mind you! Click here and enter the delightful world of Page 2.

Plenty of cricketing action these days. Australia are sweating it out in Vizag, while Sri Lanka have already pitched tent Down Under to play Aus when they return home. Meanwhile West Indies have announced an interesting squad to play Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka after that. James Anderson cracks a rib in the midst of all this, putting his Ashes plans in some jeopardy. Phew. Here's how you can keep track of everything - download the ESPNCricinfo toolbar. It is for free and it is quite awesome. Ditto with our Chrome extension. Anyone out there still using archaic browsers? Chrome's the way to go people.

1.36pm Trumpet and drum-roll! The India-Australia two-match challenge rolls on - rain in Kochi means the ODI leg, like the Test series that preceded it, is a two-game shoot-out. Both sides have rested several players going into this series. As Sriram Veera puts it in his preview, it is a chance for the youngsters to perform. India will turn out in spanking new limited-overs outfits, so that's something else to look forward to. Toss in around 20 minutes time.

Early signs are that John Hastings and Mitchell Starc could be making their debuts today. Michael Bevan and Brad Hogg, who are part of the commentary team, were with the Australia group, handing out caps to these two. We await formal confirmation.

Pitch report: "Hot and humid conditions in Vizag, yet I wear this jacket.. People think I am mad," says Ravi Shastri on air. "Good track for batting. Ball will come on to the bat, bowlers will have to take the pace off. With this humidity, there could be dew later on. This is the first day/night game here.. Team winning toss will think about fielding," he says. If Dhoni is watching, he will have a wry smile. Does he even make plans for the unlikely eventuality that he will win a toss, one of these days?

Right, our hunch was correct. Mitchell Starc and John Hastings will make their debuts today. David Warner is not playing, he is the 12th man. No inputs yet on the India side.

Australia squad: Shaun Marsh, Tim Paine (wk), Michael Clarke (capt), Michael Hussey, Cameron White, Steve Smith, James Hopes, Nathan Hauritz, John Hastings, Mitchell Starc, Clint McKay

Starc, like his namesake Mitchell Johnson is a left-arm whippy fast bowler. Hastings, who we had a good look at during the Champions League, is a slower ball specialist. That Victoria side had a few of those in operation in the CLT - Clint McKay is another, and he too is playing today. Remember that slower ball that dismissed Sachin Tendulkar on 175 in Hyderabad last year? That was McKay on debut.

0.1

Kumar to Marsh, no run, a bit of swing, from leg stump across towards off, Marsh stays behind the line and defends to the off side

One very wide slip in place.

0.2

Kumar to Marsh, 4 leg byes, starts the swing from wider outside leg and takes the pads to slip down the leg for four leg byes.

George Binoy: "That is a terrible colour."

0.3

Kumar to Marsh, 1 leg bye, again, starts the swing from outside leg stump and Marsh gets some pad on it down the leg. Dhoni puts in the dive to half-stop it

0.4

Kumar to Paine, no run, back of a length outside off, no movement. Right hander reaches out and lets it go

0.5

Kumar to Paine, no run, on the money this time, lands on middle and leg and straightens towards Paine, who stays behind the line and defends down the pitch

0.6

Kumar to Paine, no run, again, a hint of shape away from leg and gets the leading edge as Paine looks to close the face and work to the leg side. It goes safely towards short cover, no harm done

End of over 1 (5 runs, maiden) Australia 5/0 (RR: 5.00)
TD Paine    0* (3b)      P Kumar    1-1-0-0
SE Marsh    0* (3b)

Nehra to bowl the second over. Two slips. Left arm over.

1.1

Nehra to Marsh, no run, short ball, angles down the leg without straightening and it is worked towards the leg side

Sriram Veera: "Nehra averages a very respectable 30.54 in ODIs, but it would be an understatement to say that he has struggled against Australia. In 12 games against them, he has an average of 51.75 and an economy rate of 6.14." Hmm.

1.2

Nehra to Marsh, no run, good length and line this time, draws Marsh forward with a length delivery and he feels for it, uncertain of the movement. Safely played to the leg side

1.3

Nehra to Marsh, no run, on a length and angling into the left hander, who works it off the front foot to short midwicket

1.4

Nehra to Marsh, no run, this one shapes away from outside off, not much of pace off the track it gently bounds up from back of a length as Marsh shoulders arms

1.5

Nehra to Marsh, no run, over-pitched on off stump, Marsh does not capitalise. Worked from outside off straight to mid on

1.6

Nehra to Marsh, no run, and Nehra begins with a maiden. Back of a length on middle and leg, Marsh looks to work it square off the back foot but can't get it away.

Our readers, like us, have mixed reactions to India's new blue. Chetan: "The blue is definitely more crisp. might grow on us might not. but no one will care what the players are wearing as long as india wins the world cup at the end of the season!"

TD Paine    0* (3b)      P Kumar    1-1-0-0

2.1

Kumar to Paine, no run, good length ball, straightens from off stump as Paine plays from the crease to the off side

2.2

Kumar to Paine, no run, that's a pearler from Praveen. Lands on a length outside off and rears up as it darts away from Paine, who thought it was a rope and then found it was a snake and yanked his bat away

2.3

Kumar to Paine, no run, wider outside off, again nice shape outside off as Paine reaches out and lets it go

2.4

Kumar to Paine, FOUR, Lucky! Paine chips out to get to the pitch and negate the movement, but still can't get there. He gets an inside edge as he waves at it without conviction and it screams past the off stump for four.

2.5

Kumar to Paine, no run, stays in the crease this time and covers the line on off stump to defend to the off side

2.6

Kumar to Paine, 1 run, Should I play it? Should I leave it? Paine was undecided and the ball hit the bat as he was drawing it back outside off. It runs down to third man for a single

End of over 3 (5 runs) Australia 10/0 (RR: 3.33)

Sameer: "Looks like they accidentally bleached the old jerseys but decided to wear them anyway"

3.1

Nehra to Paine, no run, no movement for Nehra, banged short and angled across Paine, it does not deviate and the bounce is low too as Dhoni covers it

3.2

Nehra to Paine, no run, sprayed on the pads and Paine looks to nurdle it round the corner. Goes very fine, off the pads I reckon, and Dhoni cleans up

3.3

Nehra to Paine, 1 run, angled across again from back of a length, Paine reaches out and opens the face to dab it fine for a single

3.4

Nehra to Marsh, no run, lets a short of length ball go outside off. On the second bounce to Dhoni. Hmm.

3.5

Nehra to Marsh, OUT, rattle! Marsh is gone. Nehra keeps it on that length outside off, and despite the lack of movement, there is enough doubt in Marsh's mind, thanks to the slowness, the uneven bounce and the steady lines, as he plays from the crease without conviction. Healthy inside edge crashes into the castle.

Clarke walks out.

3.6

Nehra to Clarke, no run, back of a length outside off, Clarke stays in the crease and defends to the off side

Shahbaz disses the outfit in telling fashion. "I guess its Kalmadi who has chosen these new jerseys for the Indian team. Looks like its Nike (made in Ulhas Nagar)"

4.1

Kumar to Paine, 1 run, very slow pitch this, Paine stays back and runs the ball from outside off towards third man for one

4.2

Kumar to Clarke, no run, this one is on the money and Clarke nearly plays all over it as he looks to work to the onside. Need to time the lunge perfectly on this pitch

4.3

Kumar to Clarke, no run, this one is outside off and Clarke covers the line well to defend to the off side

4.4

Kumar to Clarke, no run, another one on the money and Clarke is staying back - not a bad idea when the ball is not on the stumps - and defending to the off side

Silly mid on comes in.

4.5

Kumar to Clarke, no run, ooh, that's on a length outside off and Clarke gets into a mess as he looks to work it to the off side. Nearly sneaks in off inside egde, but he closes the gap

4.6

Kumar to Clarke, no run, slower ball this time, Clarke looks to work it from middle and leg towards the on side, but can't quite time it

End of over 5 (1 run) Australia 12/1 (RR: 2.40)

Stat-man Madhusudhan: "Australia have not lost a final of a major tournament/bilateral series in India since their defeat in Mohali in the Titan Cup 1996. They won two tri-series- the Pepsi Cup in 1998 and the TVS cup in 2003, the Champions trophy in 2006 and three ODI series against India in 2001, 2007 and 2009."

5.1

Nehra to Paine, no run, floated on a length at 120.5 kph and it angles across the right hander, who gets into the cover drive but can't time it at all

5.2

Nehra to Paine, no run, shorter outside off and more pace on it - 130 kph - Paine times it well as he cuts it straight to point. Guess who is back there - Yuvraj Singh.

5.3

Nehra to Paine, no run, almost another chop on to the stumps, that could be the theme of the day. Nehra keeps it back of driving length as Paine looks to cut it without much room to work with. It bounces near his feet and goes over the stumps.

5.4

Nehra to Paine, no run, more width on offer this time and he again looks to cut. Can't find the gap though

5.5

Nehra to Paine, 1 run, Right, he has had enough, so stays back, opens up the off side and looks to carve this over the off side. Thick outside edge down to third man where debutant Tiwary fields

5.6

Nehra to Clarke, no run, walks out and in line with off stump to try and work it around his pads to the on side. Would have been in trouble if that had hit his pads, but he managed to work it off the legs to midwicket. Can't find the gap though.

End of over 6 (1 run) Australia 13/1 (RR: 2.16)

6.1

Kumar to Paine, 1 run, back of a length on off stump again as Paine nervously tries to defend. Inside edge goes square on the leg side as Praveen oohs and aahs

Good lengths here from India. This is exactly what needs to be done on this pitch.

6.2

Kumar to Clarke, no run, back of a length again, on and around off stump. Clarke can't get forward and plays it out to the off side

6.3

Kumar to Clarke, no run, this one is on middle and leg, Clarke tries to work it off the pads to the leg side. Straight to mid on

6.4

Kumar to Clarke, no run, fuller on the pads as Clarke tries to flick. Straight to midwicket again. An opportunity missed this time.

6.5

Kumar to Clarke, 1 run, another one on the pads and Clarke turns it around the corner to the right of Ashwin at square leg. He takes the single and gets off the mark as Ashwin's throw balloons in slowly to the non-striker's end

Dhoni is up to the stumps now. Silly mid on and silly mid off in place.

6.6

Kumar to Paine, no run, length ball on middle and off, no adventurism from Paine who stays in the crease and defends to the on side

End of over 7 (2 runs) Australia 15/1 (RR: 2.14)

MJ Clarke    1* (11b)      A Nehra    3-1-2-1

7.1

Nehra to Clarke, 1 run, angled across Clarke from over the wicket and he punches it with some conviction to mid off for a single

7.2

Nehra to Paine, no run, fullish on off and middle, angling across at 130 kph as Paine looks to open the face and run it to the off side.

7.3

Nehra to Paine, no run, lands this on middle and leg, works it off the pads to the leg side

7.4

Nehra to Paine, no run, back of a length again, Paine can't do anything with these lengths, so he just defends from the crease with the half-forward movement

7.5

Nehra to Paine, OUT, this was a-coming. Paine has been pained into a suicidal dismissal here. He tried this before, and got away with it. He again chips out, can't reach the pitch, the ball does not come onto the bat and he closes the face early as he tries to flay over the on side. It bobbled up off the inside half straight to mid on. Gone.

7.6

End of over 8 (1 run) Australia 16/2 (RR: 2.00)

8.1

Kumar to Clarke, 1 run, turned behind square for a single, Hussey back on strike.

8.2

Kumar to Hussey, no run, hmm, Praveen gets it to straighten from off stump as Hussey comes half-forward looking to prod. Played off bat and pad down the pitch

8.3

Kumar to Hussey, FOUR, there are three people on the off side inside the circle, but that's not a problem for Hussey who unfurls a delightful cut to thread a gap between those fielders into the cover boundary. Not short enough for the cut, and not quick enough to get the timing right, but that's not a problem for Hussey.

8.4

Kumar to Hussey, no run, lets this one go outside off, from a length. Not much movement

8.5

Kumar to Hussey, no run, on the stumps this time and Hussey covers the line and drives straight to mid off

8.6

Damien: "I made a cup of coffee returning not only to find Clarke still batting, but also scoring at close to his T20 run rate. Way to go Pup."

Vinay Kumar comes on.

9.1

Vinay Kumar to Clarke, 1 run, over-pitched on off stump and punched straight back by Clarke. Vinay does not make the effort to bend and stop in his follow through. Ashwin from mid on runs across to his right and does the honours

9.2

Vinay Kumar to Hussey, FOUR, another delight from the Hussey box of shots on tough wickets. This was over-pitched and Hussey had the room, band Hussey got into position early to carress it through the covers for four

9.3

Vinay Kumar to Hussey, no run, was that an off cutter? Hussey spots it and waits for it to come on from the leg stump line and defends to the off side

9.4

Vinay Kumar to Hussey, FOUR, smooth. Vinay has started in wayward fashion and Hussey has cashed in. This one is on the pads, Hussey spots the length early and clips it neatly through the leg side for four. Kohli runs back from midwicket, and in Brad Hogg's words he was, "diving for the pool, but there is no water there".

Round the wicket now.

9.5

Vinay Kumar to Hussey, no run, fullish on middle and off, Hussey comes forward and plays to the off side of the pitch

9.6

Vinay Kumar to Hussey, no run, Hussey closes the face a touch early as he tries to work it off the pads and gets a leading edge towards mid off. It stayed along the ground through out

End of over 10 (9 runs) Australia 30/2 (RR: 3.00)
MEK Hussey    12* (11b 3x4)      R Vinay Kumar    1-0-9-0

Bowling Powerplay taken by India. Three fielders in the covers inside the circle, apart from silly mid off.

10.1

Kumar to Clarke, no run, Back of a length on off stump as Clarke covers the line and punches into the covers

10.2

Kumar to Clarke, FOUR, that shot is a masterpiece in the art of timing. Not full enough to be driven and it does not quite come on to the bat from outside off. Clarke pushes forward and makes all the momentum with his bat speed, and makes contact on the up with the meat of the bat to find the gap between the bowler and mid off.

10.3

Kumar to Clarke, no run, fuller this time and Clarke plays it more watchfully

Kohli stands at an inexplicable position. Mid off, not too close, not too far. Around hya;f-way up from Praveen's run up.

10.4

Kumar to Clarke, no run, full on the stumps and Clarke falls into the off drive, straight to Kohli who is standing on uncharted territory

10.5

Kumar to Clarke, 1 run, works this into the covers where a fumble allows the single. Raina misfielded there, believe it or not.

10.6

Kumar to Hussey, no run, very slow slower ball, wide outside off and Hussey wants nothing to do with it. Double bouncer to Dhoni.

Dharma: "Experimentation from dress to the dressing room. India getting all geared up for the WC?"

11.1

Vinay Kumar to Clarke, no run, Clarke motions out of the crease and looks to flick Vinay through midwicket. Yuvraj stops, does not collect, yet gets ready to throw.. and stares Hussey back into the crease. If looks could kill!

11.2

Vinay Kumar to Clarke, no run, a hint of inward movement, Clarke tries to play around the pads to the leg side, but can't beat mid on

11.3

Vinay Kumar to Clarke, no run, better from Vinay, he is hitting more Praveenesque lengths here. Clarke gets half forward, looking to cover any movement and defends to the off side

11.4

Vinay Kumar to Clarke, no run, Clarke jumps out, but Vinay keeps it very short as Clarke hits it hard into the covers

11.5

Vinay Kumar to Clarke, no run, and again, Clarke tries to make some pace happen by driving hard on the up. But he can't get enough momentum and punches it straight to mid off

11.6

12.1

Nehra to Hussey, FOUR, sprays the first ball of his spell into Hussey's pads. Meat and drink for Hussey who works it without fuss off the pads for four, to the left of midwicket inside the circle

Abhishek: "Wonder how Boycott would call Clarke the "Pup" given that he calls mum as "moom"." Naughty.

12.2

Nehra to Hussey, no run, keeps it very short outside off and Hussey stays back to open the face and run it square. Can't beat point though, who nearly concedes an overthrow with a needless shy at the stumps

12.3

Nehra to Hussey, 1 run, another one on the pads, Hussey waits on this one and nurdles it fine for a single

12.4

Nehra to Clarke, no run, cat and mouse stuff. Clarke darts out of the crease, Nehra possibly saw him coming and kept it very full and very wide outside off. Clarke plays it defensively to the covers

12.5

Nehra to Clarke, 1 leg bye, Clarke is out of the crease again, Nehra keeps this short on the pads and Clarke does not manage to make decent contact

12.6

Nehra to Hussey, 1 run, another one on Hussey's pads - this over has been an aberration given the way Nehra started - and again worked towards square leg for one

13.1

Vinay Kumar to Hussey, 1 run, back of a length and angling in, Hussey calmly drops it to the off side off the back foot and takes an easy single

A lots of readers mention David Johnson as the fastest bowler of India. All-time.

13.2

Vinay Kumar to Clarke, FOUR, Ashwin makes a mess of it at mid off. Drifts into Clarke's pads and he flicks it wide of mid off, as Ashwin runs across and tumbles. He moved very slowly there and the ball had already scooted past for four

13.3

Vinay Kumar to Clarke, no run, full on middle and off, Clarke drives it crisply towards mid off

13.4

Vinay Kumar to Clarke, no run, stifled appeal from Vinay who gets a bit of inward movement from outside off. Clarke pushes outside the line and gets a bit of bat and pad on it.

13.5

Vinay Kumar to Clarke, 1 run, short ball, rises slowly as it angles into Clarke who stays in the crease and works it off the hips for one

13.6

Vinay Kumar to Hussey, no run, full outside Hussey's off stump as he looks for the steer past point. Can't beat the fielder this time

No answers, but Ramesh Powar will make my final shortlist. Ashwin comes on with a slip.

14.1

Ashwin to Clarke, no run, on a length outside off, not much movement as Clarke defends

14.2

Ashwin to Clarke, 1 run, straighter this time and Clarke works it off the pads towards midwicket

Ashwin is bowling with a different action to what we saw in the IPL and CLT20. A lot more motions with his hands before release.

Round the wicket to CSK mate Hussey

14.3

Ashwin to Hussey, 1 run, full on off and Hussey reaches out to play it siftly into the covers for one

14.4

Ashwin to Clarke, no run, full on off and Clarke looks to drive, but gets too close to the ball and squeezes to the off side

14.5

Ashwin to Clarke, 1 run, this one is shorter and Clarke stays back to play it square on the off side for one

Last ball of the Bowling Powerplay coming up.

14.6

Ashwin to Hussey, no run, full on off and Hussey plays watchfully to the off side.

Over and drinks. Dheeraj nominates Trevor Chappell's under-armer as the slowest ball ever bowled. Beat that! Peter George bowled a couple of very slow slower deliveries in the Tests. Lots of nominations for Venkatapathy "Muscles" Raju too! And Jeremy Snape, the erstwhile slow man who is now an integral part of England's support staff.

15.1

15.2

Vinay Kumar to Hussey, no run, short ball outside off, Hussey looks to punch it off the back foot but can't beat Raina at cover

15.3

Vinay Kumar to Hussey, no run, good length, keeps it outside off and not full enough for Hussey to drive. He looks to drop it to the off side, but can't get it away for one

15.4

Vinay Kumar to Hussey, 2 runs, misfield in the covers by Raina. Hussey drives on the up, and Raina should have stopped that as he tumbled to the right. Lets it go and it is a couple. The weather must be quite oppressive.

17.6

Yuvraj Singh to Clarke, 1 leg bye, huge appeal for lbw turned down. Full from Yuvraj, on middle and off as Clarke bounds out of the crease. Hits him on and around off stump as he misses the flick. Was he too far down? Was he outside the line? Leg bye taken towards third man. It landed on leg and was straightening. Might have hit middle and off, or might not have. Clarke was well forward.

18.1

Ashwin to Clarke, 1 run, turning in from middle and off, a bit of sharp turn there, but Clarke covers the spin and works it to the leg side

The last ball of the previous over: it landed on leg and was straightening. Might have hit middle and off, or might not have. Clarke was well forward.

18.2

Ashwin to Hussey, 1 run, Hussey picks a single. They are turning the strike over well.

19.3

Yuvraj Singh to Hussey, 1 run, straighter this time, full and on off stump, Hussey drives it down to long off for one

19.4

Yuvraj Singh to Clarke, FOUR, lovely play from Clarke here. He skips out, ensuring that he does not get too close to the ball, and hence has the room to free his arms and go over the covers. Inside-outed to perfection over the infield and well wide of long off running across.

Neo Sports seems to have conked out. Bear with us while they fix the issues.

20.1

Ashwin to Clarke, no run, full on off stump and Clarke works it off the pads to midwicket

20.2

Ashwin to Clarke, 1 run, that is as delicate as they come. Back of a length outside off and turning in. Clarke taps it so softly to the off side, you barely saw the bat make contact with the ball there. Single inside the circle

20.3

Ashwin to Hussey, 1 run, worked off the pads by Hussey - he will do this all day - and a single behind square on the leg side

20.4

20.6

Ashwin to Clarke, no run, back of a length and turning in sharply. Clarke stays back, spots the spin and works it to midwicket

22.3

Ashwin to Clarke, 1 run, full on off and driven nicely towards long off, Vinay bustles across to his right and tumbles to field that. Well done.

22.4

Ashwin to Hussey, no run, full on middle and turning across Hussey who again looks to work it softly with the spin. Can't find the gap

22.5

Ashwin to Hussey, 1 run, whoa, Hussey nearly holed out to a half-tracker. It was bad ball, spinning away from outside off as Hussey looked to pull. Hardly middled it, and it landed a few metres away from Praveen at cow corner

22.6

Ashwin to Clarke, 1 run, Clarke this time, ships out and tries to slam a ball that does not come on to the bat, down the ground. It goes no where. Lands somewhere between midwicket and wide long on, where there's no one to take the catch

This pitch is slow death epitomised. Watch out for Hastings and Mckay later today.

Srikanth: "When I watch Hussey play in ODI's I immediately connect him with an ant - busy stealing singles and patiently waiting to feed on bad balls - before you notice he has amassed some 30 odd runs - the Indians are busy trying to contain clarke while it is Hussey who is slowly mounting up the pressure"

Not sure if ants steal singles and wait for bad balls, but the analogy is appreicated. Raina comes on.,

24.1

Raina to Hussey, 1 run, full on the pads and Hussey punches firmly off the toes to midwicket for one

24.2

Raina to Clarke, 1 run, worked with the spin through square leg for one

24.6

Raina to Clarke, 2 runs, shorter to Clarke and it goes down the leg with the spin as he dinks it along for a coule to fine leg.

25.1

25.2

Yuvraj Singh to Clarke, 1 run, shorter and straightening from off and middle into Clarke, who waits for the deviation and works against the spin for a single to square leg

25.3

Yuvraj Singh to Hussey, FOUR, Hussey blasts that one through the covers. Over-pitched outside off and Hussey was waiting for it. He got to the pitch and smote it through to the right of Vijay at cover. Lovely timing.

25.5

Yuvraj Singh to Clarke, 1 run, speared on the pads and deviating into Clarke who has no problem working it to the leg side for another one.

This is a top partnership. They have played the bowling, and more importantly the conditions, on merit.

Comments on the outfit continue to pour in. Here's Nishant: "The uniform reminds me of a detergent color or a toilet cleaner, i am not sure. Fav color was India in dark blue 1992 WC Australia. Also like the uniform in SA during the tri-series with Zim in the fray, when Dravid smashed Donald over the ropes. NIKE we are not some American Baseball team, please more creativity, more culture and more flavour"

That Standard Bank tri-series in 1997 had some vintage gear.

28.1

Raina to Hussey, 1 run, short and turning away from Hussey, who stays bacl and works it against the spin to midwicket for one

28.2

Raina to Clarke, FOUR, Clarke has played his best innings on the tour, and what a shot to bring up the fifty landmark. Slightly short and slightly wide outside off, and placement was of the essence as Clarke rocked back and fsent it purring through the covers with a cut shot.

28.3

Kurian is on a nostalgia trip: "When it comes to jersey color, nobody even seems to know or remember the brown n black outfit India had when they toured in the late 80s and early 90s before the 92 world cup made them Men In Blue. Wish they could bring that shade back on. I remember a lot of Sachin and Kapil pinups donning that outfit."

Another favourite India outfit of mine was the 1999 CB series in Australia. Pity the team got absolutely thumped in those colours. Atleast they looked good while taking a beating.

Vinay comes back on.

30.1

Vinay Kumar to Clarke, no run, on a length around off stump, not much movement, but comes into Clarke with the angle as he looks to work it around to the leg side. Can't quite get it away

30.5

Vinay Kumar to Clarke, 1 run, run-out chance, but Dhawan misses from mid off. That shaped in from outside off and Clarke pushed it towards mid off and took off for the single. Dhawan covered ground quickly, but missed with his throw. Would have been touch and go.

30.6

Vinay Kumar to Hussey, no run, textbook defence from Hussey to an over-pitched offering on middle and leg

31.2

Kumar to Clarke, 2 runs, chips to the off side as the ball angles into him from off stump, and picks a couple behind deep square leg. This partnership has been a lesson on middle-overs batting in an ODI.

31.3

Kumar to Clarke, no run, short and wide outside off, Clarke is out of the crease as he looks to guide it to the right of Yuvraj at point. Fumbled, but no run conceded

31.4

Kumar to Clarke, 1 run, another misfield, what's happening here. Single conceded this time by Vijay at midwicket. Short ball angled into Clarke who flicked straight to Vijay, who deflected it to Dhawan, allowing them to steal one

31.5

Kumar to Hussey, 2 runs, very short and Hussey latches on with a pull over the in-field. He focused on control rather than power this time and kept it down to deep square leg as Tiwary ran across to field. Couple taken.

31.6

Kumar to Hussey, FOUR, thumped! Over-pitched outside off and Hussey drills it on the up through wide long on as the fielder in the deep makes a vain attempt to tumble and save.

The India-Australia Test series is over, but talk about Ricky Ponting and his future hasn't died down. Have a listen to Harsha Bhogle, Sanjay Manjrekar and Tom Moody discussing Ricky Ponting's future and role in the Australian team in this week's Time Out.

Buggy, another of Ashwin's many friends who seem to be reading Cricinfo commentary, says: "Ashwin was my school mate and he was indeed a batsman who could roll his hands over. Lost track of him though untill IPL. To my surprise and horror, he was being used as a bowler. He has saved many matches for PSBB with his bat. "

Ravi from the UK: "Its too early to call Ashwin as an allrounder its all wishy washy stuff mate, In my view there were only handful of allrounders in world cricket till date, I would say its an extremely wishful."

Srikanth asks: "The Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde show by Clarke is bewitching. One day he is clueless about Spin and pace alike and deflates as a balloon in the test series - the next day he stands tall and dominates the pacers and spin alike in a near flawless innings today - who is the real Clarke ?"

And Matt asks: "Do India really have an all-rounder/5th bowler problem? They seem to be doing pretty fine to me..."

End of over 49 (15 runs) Australia 266/3 (RR: 5.42)
CL White    67* (44b 5x4 3x6)      A Nehra    10-1-57-2
MJ Clarke    110* (138b 7x4 1x6)      P Kumar    9-1-51-0

49.1

Vinay Kumar to Clarke, 1 run, a yorker just outside off, Clarke looks to get it away to point, hits the bottom of the bat and rolls to the off side

White was 3 off 11 deliveries at one stage

49.2

49.5

Vinay Kumar to White, SIX, Brutality, another full toss and White hammers that one over midwicket, a flat, powerful hit for six more, Vinay Kumar can't wait for this to end

49.6

Vinay Kumar to White, SIX, The perfect finish for Australia, six more, but a delicate six (if that's possible), a low full toss and White's timing to get that away beyond midwicket was sensational, totally different to the previous shot which was a brute force hit

White was 45 when the 48th over started, and he finishes on 89. He blasted 70 of his final 24 balls. At one stage, there were questions over whether Australia would reach 250, they ended up on 289. Last five overs cost India 84 runs. White's hitting has overshadowed what was a well-paced, determined innings from Clarke, who ends unbeaten on 111. He and Hussey steadied Australia with a 144-run stand after the openers fell cheaply, before White left India facing a tough target.

A plethora of exclamation marks from Paras: "Speechless. At first I thought that maybe Aussies would reach 250-260. But Cameron White had other ideas. Hope Yuvi plays a blinder today!!!!"

Kunal David: "What an innings, a game changer!"

Billy is a satisfied Australian fan: "I think that display just proved Australia's dominance in the ODI format. Imagine if Warner and Watson, what should be our first choice opening pair, were at the top of the order..."

Jason points out: "There were only 9 dot balls in the last 10 overs. First rule of batting is to keep the scoreboard ticking over!"

There is some support (and plenty of unflattering feedback) for Vinay Kumar, after the hammering he received today. Ravi says: "Vinay Kumar should still be persisted after today's pasting as Vinay has got the potential to be the next Javagal Srinath for India, lets hope this will be a good learning curve."

And there are plenty of people questioning why Vinay was given the final over.

White's hitting has also stopped all mails about the new Indian jersey. India may have got off to a good start, but it is Australia who have ended their innings on a high. Here's a look back in our Gallery.
