Mohit likely to retain place, Yuvraj a chance

63

Mohit Sharma, who bagged the Man-of-the-Match award on his ODI debut during India's tour of Zimbabwe, is likely to keep his place in the squad for the first half of India's limited-overs series at home against Australia, which starts with the lone Twenty20 international in Rajkot on October 10. Yuvraj Singh has done enough upon his return to be on the selectors' radar.

The national selection panel, which was retained during Sunday's BCCI annual general meeting, will meet in Chennai on Monday to pick the squad for the T20I and first three of the seven ODIs to be played against Australia.

Mohit, the medium-pacer from Haryana who followed up an excellent Ranji Trophy season with Haryana with an impressive IPL season for Chennai Super Kings, has a reputation for striking early in the innings. It is this ability, combined with his work ethic, that has impressed coach Duncan Fletcher. The selectors are of the view he is ready for the highest level.

If Mohit is rewarded with a place, he is likely to replace Vinay Kumar from the triumphant Champions Trophy squad. Besides Mohit, the most discussed player will be Yuvraj, who led India Blue to the Challenger Series title on Sunday.

Yuvraj made his return to international cricket last September after recovering from a rare germ cell cancer. He subsequently lost his place in the side after some middling performances. He is now back after a a prolonged fitness stint in France with renowned trainer Tim Exeter. Ever since returning to competitive cricket, a lean and fit Yuvraj has blazed away consistently.

He marked his return to competitive cricket with an astonishing knock of 123 runs for India A against West Indies A two weeks ago, and followed it up with scores of 40 and 61 in the following one-dayers before signing off the series with a quick-fire 52 in the lone T20. Though he missed the Challenger opener due to a stiff back, he carried in his form with a trademark 84 against India Red before scoring 29 against Delhi in Sunday's final.

Yuvraj has appeared to be at his fluent best, thus forcing the selectors to take note. The selectors have been viewing Yuvraj's resurgence as a "good headache". They now have three choices: to bring back Yuvraj, or to stick with Dinesh Karthik who had a decent Champions Trophy outing, or to go with Ajinkya Rahane, who has been waiting in the wings for a long time.

Two of these middle-order batsmen can be accommodated in case the selectors decide not to go for a like-for-like replacement for an unfit Irfan Pathan from the Champions Trophy squad. However, it is understood that Abhishek Nayar's name will pop up during the discussion for the slot left vacant by Irfan's injury.

Yuvi deserves his place, and India will have 4 left handed batsmen if he makes it to the 11. That gives opposition bowlers a real headache as there will always be a left-right combination at the crease, and the entire batting line up will be capable of clearing the fence. It also frees up the four bowling spots to pick pure bowlers. We can't ask for much more in terms of balance or firepower.

India can easily put together a good team for ODI. Dhawan, Rohit, Raina,Yuvraj, Dhoni, Jadeja, Ashwin, Kohli - more or less are definite. In the recent games played by India A, U19's and U23, we can choose to definite s in Pujara, Juneja, Kohli, Bhuvi and Dhoni for tests. Fringe players like Rahane, Vijay,Mohit, Pandey, Zol, Menaria, Lokesh Rahul, Amit Mishra need to step up further to gain places. The selectors will have headache choosing. I mention Juneja as a test player cause this is one batsman who seems to be in mould of Pujara - they can face many balls - longevity without losing their wicket.

@RyanHarrisGreatCricketer : Yuvraj Singh not good for quality fast bowling ? what a ludicrous analysis. Yuvraj Singh is one of the best player in all time India XI who can face qualty fast bowling. You forgot the six sixes of Stuart Board ( all well timed shots) or you didnt witness 20yr old debut innings of 74 from 54 balls against the quality pace attack of Mc Grath, Gillespie and Lee in inaugral champions trophy. The reason I reckon it debut innings as he didnt get a chance to bat in his first match. Did you forget that he was the Man of the Series in the recently concluded worldcup? There are numerous more but would not like to waste my time in convincing you. if Dravid can be summed as Do until they die then Yuvraj SIngh is like : Do Die Reborn Do die Reborn ..:)

  • RyanHarrisGreatCricketer on September 30, 2013, 2:58 GMT

Yuvraj has never been a good player of quality fast bowling, which is the reason Dinesh Karthik was brought in from the Champions Trophy onwards. And given the fact that Jadeja has excelled in UV's erstwhile role, we need to wait and watch for a couple more 'A' series and see hoe UV goes.

    My Indian team for ODIs:

Rohit, Shikhar, Virat, Karthik, Dhoni, Rasool, Jadeja, Mishra, Bhuvi, Yadav, Mohit Reserves: Mandeep Singh, Kedar Jadhav , Shami Ahmed and Pragyan Ojha.

No need of a defensive bowler like Ashwin and a bad player of shortpitched bowling like Raina. And in the long term, if injury free, Irfan Pathan should play at #6, but because he is unavailable, this is the time to introduce Parvez Rasool, who is a quality allrounder and maybe he can be India's mainstay

  • TheShawshankRedemption on September 30, 2013, 2:58 GMT

Mohit impresses coach and selectors. Has any other seamer has not? Munaf, Sreesanth, RPSingh, B & P Kumar, Nehra, Ishant, Vinay, Mithun, Unadkant, Umesh, Varun, etc etc. Its high time we focus on WC' 15 and find 5 to 6 good potential fast bowlers than juggling around. You cannot win a WC without a great death fast bowler and can take wickets at will or reduce run rate drastically just like Zaheer did time and again for Dhoni in 2011. Hence select 5 or 6 guys and put them in high performance camps.

Well, ZAK should be there as he is a LEFT-HANDED FAST BOWLER who will bring the ball INTO THE RIGHT HANDER. A lot of teams like WI, ENG, ZIM, SRI, BANG don't have a good LEFT HAND FAST BOWLER. I feel Zaheer with his death bowling will make a difference with Bhuvi who will bring the ball in to the LEFT HANDER. Unadkat will be the under-study of ZAK.

I would slot Binny and Yuvraj in T20 Playing XI for Rajkot. Rajkot is traditionally good wicket for batting. India needs more All-rounders in T20, who can bowl over or two as well as bat with strike rate of 150 to 200. Binny and Yuvraj can definitely fill this spot. My T20 Playing XI would be

DHAWAN, ROHIT, KOHLI, RAINA, YUVRAJ, DHONI, JADEJA, BINNY, ASHWIN, BHUVNESHWER, ISHANT.

For ODI I would replace Binny with Mohit Sharma in my playing XI.

  • Aju.Nair on September 30, 2013, 0:06 GMT

Abhishek Nayar and Yuvaraj Singh deserves a chance..But Dhoni's attitude towards A.Nayar is key here..Last time in the West Indies series where he made his debut, it was clear that Dhoni doesn't want him to be in his 11...Also its time for S.Binny also to come front after his excellent performances..he is a bowler who can chip in with few overs as well...U.Yadav's death bowling is a major concern here..Jaydev Unadkat had a decent outing in Zimbabwe, so dropping him will be unethic, but selectors may go for experience, so U.Yadav who had exp. playing against Australia would surely favor him...As it is for first few matches, selectors should come up with some gutsy decisions to drop someone who is not playing well in these matches, and should give chance to some new faces for the later stage of the tournament...1.Dhawan,2.Rohit,3.Kohli,4.Dhoni,5.Yuvaraj,6.Raina,7.A.Nayar 8.R.Jadeja,,9.R.Aswin,10.B.Kumar,11.M.Sharma would be nice.. Dhoni should have to bat atleast at no.4... Godspeed. :)

Captain&wk- Dhoni Openers- Dhawan,Rohit & Rahane Middle order- Kohli,Yuvraj,Raina,Raydu(unfair to drop him as he hasnt got many chances) all rounder- jadeja, nayar spinners- Ashwin, Nadeem, mishra Fast bowler- Bhuvi, umesh, Ishant, Unadkat , Ishwar Pandey (vry slim chance)

i Doubt about mohit as he was not on a tour and his pace is similar to bhuvi. two bowler wid such pace on indian condition may b not. I hardly see any another selection than above. M quite suree about unadkant as he has been the only impressive left armer. Suyal needs to have some moer gud perfomances and shud b tested on a tours

Nayar in XI gud give an intersting option to play 3 spinners Jadeja, Ashwin ,Nadeem/mishra .

Another intersting choice wud b who plays at no.4 - yuvraj, Rahane(He shud nt b made to sit on bench nymore) ,Raydu or they promote raina and get in Nayar and play 2 spin/pace attack.

Great time for indian cricket to have a huge pool of player .

  • Nampally on September 29, 2013, 21:31 GMT

My biggest concern with selection of the team at this stage is likely dropping of ZAK, still the best Indian seamer. I consider ZAK, B.Kumar, Pandey, Yadev & Ishant Sharma to be the 5 seamers in the squad. As for batting it is almost self selecting with: Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Kohli, Yuvraj, Raina, Dhoni, Jadeja. Ashwin, Mishra & Karthik/Rayudu will complete the 15. Yuvraj gets into the XI as a batsman. The Selectors have already ruled out Pujara from ODI's. Pujara is still the best technically sound batsman in India today. Is the Wily ZAK fit & match ready? - this question remains unanswered till the 4 day unofficial test. Rohit Sharma may be good but still inexperienced. India can expect Pandey to perform better than Mohit in SA because of his pace. Nayar is a fine all rounder deserving a chance. But the only available spot is taken up by Jadeja. Similarly it is difficult to find a spot for Rahane. The Selectors will have a tough challenge to select a team without raising questions.

  • Cpt.Meanster on September 29, 2013, 21:01 GMT

Yuvi should definitely be in the team after a string of fine performances against WI A in the recently concluded unofficial ODIs. It would be unfair if the selectors ignore him. I also would like to see Robin Uthappa involved in some capacity with the Indian team. He's still very young and has a lot to offer our team. Amit Mishra also deserves a call up. The Aussies are poor against spin and Mishra can torment them. I also hope Pervez Rasool gets an opportunity in some of the games because he's a crafty all-rounder. So many exciting things about Indian cricket at the moment. It bodes well for us - the fans.

So many option now Yuvraj, Abhishek Nayar, Stuart Binny, Ashok Manaria, Parvez Razool, Baba Aparajith, Piyush Chawla, U Chand, S Nadeem (like that so many promising all rounders) & Manpreeth Juneja. No need Umesh Yadav; even he cannot bowl well in internal matches (with in 10 overs 80, 70 runs), Rajat Bhatia is better than him. His bowling speed is 130 or 125 km only. But not this much expensive and also Bhatia can bat well.

Yuvraj Singh for DK is a not that difficult a choice. Rest all pick themselves. Though seeing that Duleep Trophy will be underway I would rather like only 3 reserve players in the form of Mohit Sharma, Amit Mishra & Dinesh Karthik as the extra batsmen and reserve keeper. 1. Rohit 2. Shikar 3. Virat 4. Yuvraj 5. Raina 6. Dhoni 7. Jadeja 8. Ashwin 9. Bhuvi 10. Ishant 11. Umesh

I don't know why people are obsessed with Ajinkhya Rahane hie not performing highest level yes he is showing great confidence for RR but when playing for India he is not confident enough, The best option is Yuvraj who is in very good form, Nayar can not replace Irfan becuase Nair is a batsman who can bowl some overs Dhawan Rohith Kohli Yuvraj Dhoni Raina Jadeja Aswin B kumar Mohith sharma ishanth Sharma reserves Dinesh Karthik Umesh Yadav Shami Ahmad Parvez Rassool/Piyush Chawla

Good headache for Indian selectors with performing players knocking on doors. However its important not to mess with side's balance

Mohit sharma is good but yuvraj in side except rohit, dhoni, kohli batting line will be loaded with left handers which can be disadvantage especially in odi cricket

I guess the team would be something like: Dhoni (c), Kohli, Rohit, Dhawan, Yuvraj, Jadeja, Raina, Rahane, Ashwin, Bhuvi, Mohit, Ishant, Shami, Mishra. It's nice and balanced, too, so no problems. There's some stability now as well which is good.
