Match slipped the moment Kohli came in - Bailey

"Smart cricket" from Virat Kohli was the primary reason behind Australia failing to defend 359 in Jaipur, Australia captain George Bailey has said. Kohli slammed the fastest ODI century by an India batsman, 100 off 52 balls, an innings which helped his team stroll to their highest successful one-day chase.

"He started attacking us from ball one but never took any risks which would have helped us come back into the game," Bailey said. "He set the tempo and it was smart cricket from him. Basically all three of them [Kohli, Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma] batted amazingly, but it was Virat who took the game away from us. [The match slipped away from Australia] the moment Virat came to the crease."

India's batting had struggled against the pace and bounce of Australia's seamers in the first match of the series, but, Bailey said, this time they had emphatic answers to every question his bowlers posed, resulting in an "absolutely deflating" defeat for his side. However, since it's a long series, Australia have enough time to turn things around, he pointed out.

"The fuller deliveries were going over our head while the short ones were hit to the side [square] boundary. [But] we still have five matches to go. We will go to a new venue and it will be a new venue."

There was no need to panic, Bailey said, saying Australia's all-round performance was good in the first match, while the batting clicked once more in Jaipur - they had managed scores of over 300 in both matches, and bowled India out for 232 in the first match. "The manner in which we batted was great. We also bowled well in one of the matches. I would like to take these positives into the next match."

The third ODI will be played on Saturday in Mohali.
