Australia in India ODI Series - 1st ODI

India v Australia

Australia won by 72 runs

Phil Hughes is opening the batting with Finch, Bhuvnewshwar Kumar to bowl

1.25 pm Five minutes to go, the ground is 60% full, but looks like more engineers will fill it up later.

1.15 pm TV analysts are deconstructing Yuvraj's onslaught in Rajkot, and how good it was, but how many of you think that the short boundaries in Rajkot had a part to play. Most of his sixes there would have ended up well inside, into the hands of fielders, in most grounds around the world.

"I am not sure whether Bhuvaneswar Kumar knows about this pitch. Most of the IPL matches were played in the Sahara stadium in Pune and not in this Stadium," aaha Satish, so what ground do you think this is? The stands look pretty similar to that IPL ground.

steven.wedgbury: "hi had a day of work for this or shall i say sick day ...whats a par score looking at the pitch ...good thing to know before the start" ----- 280 being mentioned as the par-score. The pitch has a tendency of staying low and being slow.

Anand: "Today's matchup on reminds of a clash between these two sides on a Dusshera day in the mid 90s. I think the match was in Bangalore and the local boys Srinath and Kumble did a superb rearguard action while chasing to take India to an unlikely victory against the then giants of World Cricket. How the tables have turned since then!" ---- Wonderful match it was, and here is the link Ashish, another feedbacker, has dug out.

Robertito: "Loved the link to the 96/97 game. One of the wonderful things about cricket is how you can read a scorecard like a story. Imagine Azharuddin and Taylor both playing in a one dayer!"

1.00 pm Australia have won the toss and they will bat first. A number of changes in the Australian XI from the team that played the T20, and they have brought in Maxwell (compared to their last ODI XI). MS Dhoni says he would have bowled anyway on the pitch, which George Bailey thought looked flat. India are playing the same XI that featured in the T20.

It's funny what inputs the captains get when they take a call at toss. For Australia, Aaron Finch would have had something to say about the ground and the pitch, being the captain of the city's IPL franchise. For India, a few names from Pune Warriors - Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ashok Dinda and the guy who made that impressive comeback in the T20 in Rajkot.

12.45 pm Holaaa everyone, welcome to our coverage of the first ODI between India and Australia. Few years back, this used to one of the most sought after contests, but this time, it looks like it has been shoved in a bit. However, it's still a match between two good powerpacked teams and Australia, as you know, have an excellent record in ODIs in India. So we can expect it to be an even contest. Toss in 15 minutes.

Abhishek Purohit did a bit of geographical maths and worked out that if you trace the line between the venues, it forms a big question mark. That is one thing that has got me excited about this match. The question mark. So thanks to Abhishek for that. The match is being played in Pune's new ground, which has hosted a number of matches in the IPL and a T20 as well, but this is the first ODI being played here. Pune is an industrial city, lots of manufacturing, lots of IT here, so the ground is bound to be replete with engineers. We all love engineers.

Surya Meduri: "As per maps, you take Pune and Mohali out, then the question mark becomes clearer. So lets see that Aussie win those two and Ind wins the question mark" ----- Are you suggesting that this should be called the Question Mark Trophy? I like it anyway, we will call it the Question Mark Trophy

"This has been happening for so many years, but why do we have India matches on festive day, wouldn't cricketers want to be at home with their family on such days," says Rohit Jain

Divyesh: "@Rohit, it's because the money you get out of these matches can buy you better time off with your family...I know it is always better idea to be home on festive day but when u have high income, who cares about day, it's the holiday destination that matters."

Hari Krishnan: "@Rohit. Matches are held on festival days since it will be a holiday and hence more people can watch."

Prabhakaran: "@Divyesh : Money is also a point acceptable but they have the pride of playing for their nation too. That can't be changed by anyone"

"I guess its about saying NO to something," suggests Rohit Jain again. "Being an IT engineer, we tend to follow client's holiday calendar sacrifying our own festival's, imagine any of ENG. SA. AUS. player playing on christmas, it wont happen. Money and playing for nation is just a convenient excuse" -------- Say NO to the BCCI? I would rather bell a cat.

Gareth: "I would have expected bailey to field first. I'm concerned a faltering batting line up may not know how much to set. On a flat deck the Aussies will really rely on the pace of Johnson and the slow balls of MacKay and Faulkner."

End of over 8 (8 runs) Australia 37/0 (RR: 4.62)
PJ Hughes    18* (24b 3x4)      R Vinay Kumar    4-1-18-0

First change for India, Ishant Sharma comes in to bowl, he just needs 6 more wickets to get to 100 in ODIs

9.5

9.6

I Sharma to Finch, no run, he stands tall and cuts the short of length delivery, but hits it straight to cover point

End of over 10 (7 runs) Australia 50/0 (RR: 5.00)

AJ Finch    18* (28b 2x4 1x6)      I Sharma    1-0-7-0

11.1

I Sharma to Hughes, 1 run, a straightforward chance at point has been dropped by Virat! It was outside off and the batsman just plays a loose drive that heads straight to Virat, who is not able to hold on to this. Ishant immediately turns away and walks back to his mark

I Sharma to Finch, FOUR, another short and wide delivery, this one is not hit very hard, but he make sure he places it to the left of the point fielder, and it has enough legs to beat the third man fielder

11.5

I Sharma to Finch, no run, he bowls this one fuller and on off stump, the batsman comes forward to defend, but inside edges it on to his pads

Lyndon McPaul: "Hughes has to give Finch as much of the strike as possible; especially against spin. For Australia to win; we must get the best out of Finch!"

11.6

I Sharma to Finch, 1 run, another length delivery on off, the batsman pushes it to the left of cover fielder for an easy single

12.6

Ashwin to Finch, no run, he makes room and tries to force the quicker delivery through off, but is beaten by the bounce

End of over 13 (10 runs) Australia 73/0 (RR: 5.61)

15.1

I Sharma to Hughes, 1 run, full delivery outside off, the batsman crunches a drive through extra cover, but there is protection in the deep

15.3

I Sharma to Finch, 1 run, better delivery, this is around off stump, the batsman drops it towards cover for a quick single

Kohli to Finch, 1 run, stays in the crease and punches it down to long on for a single

Govind: "Is Finch the answer for Matty Hayden's replacement in ODIs for Aus? On the evidence of the last few matches, it does look so. The Batting Powerplay has been called and Dhoni turns to his weapon: Vinay Kumar (sigh)

FormerCricketLover: "I was very impressed by Sharda Urga's Article about BCCI's restrictions on Commentators. Finally someone had the guts to say something. I always felt Indian commentary was way below par but could put my finger the exact reason. Why do I need people of experience of Gavaskar and Shastri to tell me that the ball as been hit straight to cover (even that is not allowed if it is a senior player like Dhoni, Kohli etc.) when I can see that with my own eyes? What the public needs is an insight into inner workings of cricket from the commentators, that they have access to, but the public doesn't. 39.6

Vinay Kumar to Haddin, no run, short of length delivery wide outside off, Haddin aims his pull to the leg side, but misses it completely

Greg: "What sort of a pitch do we have - is 300 a match winner?" --- 280 was thought to be competitive at the start, but I agree with Mudit, who says, "With all the power hitters in the Indian team, Australia would need to make at least another 100 runs to be competitive."

41.1

Jadeja to Bailey, no run, quicker delivery on off, the batsman goes back and punches it to cover point

41.2

Jadeja to Bailey, no run, that was actually too close to cut, the batsman is lucky not to chop that on, plays it towards short third man

42.2

Ashwin to Haddin, OUT, this one is plumb, Haddin was deep in his crease and tried to flick this flatter delivery towards the leg side, but it was pushed a bit quicker too and Haddin was beaten to be hit right in front of the middle stump. That would have gone on to hit the top of the middle

43.1

Kumar to Faulkner, 1 run, it's short of length outside off, the batsman punches it to deep cover for a single

43.2

Kumar to Bailey, FOUR, short delivery outside off, it doesn't get up much, but Bailey plays a neat pull past midwicket, all along the ground and there is a huge gap there for him to exploit

A man is placed at deep midwicket now

43.3

Kumar to Bailey, FOUR, but the batsman plays a similar delivery smartly, pulls it finer on the leg side, between short fine leg and backward square leg

43.4

43.5

Kumar to Bailey, 1 run, slower delivery outside off, the batsman waits and forces it to deep cover with ease

44.1

Ashwin to Bailey, 1 run, flatter delivery on the off stump line, the batsman stays in the crease and whips it to deep square leg for a single

Anupam: "@ZCFOutkast: Looks can be deceptive. Jadeja is a pretty smart bowler as his List A and First class records suggest. As well he has matured as an international bowler. Accurate line and length bowling and subtle variations make him a very skillful and difficult customer to handle. Credit to Dhoni for persisting on him!!"

44.2

Ashwin to Faulkner, no run, slower this time, and on the off stump line, the batsman defends it off the front foot

44.3

Ashwin to Faulkner, no run, even slower this time, Faulkner waits and then defends it to the leg side

44.4

Ashwin to Faulkner, 1 run, shorter and quicker, but on the leg stump line, Faulkner shuffles across and clips it to deep square leg

44.5

Ashwin to Bailey, FOUR, attempts a carrom ball, but this a wrong line, way down the leg side and it's helped to the fine leg boundary with a powerful sweep

45.2

Vinay Kumar to Faulkner, no run, length delivery on off, the batsman checks his shot at the end, plays it to cover off the front foot

Lakshman: "A round of applause to India's over rate. At this rate they will be finishing by about 20 minutes ahead of the scheduled finish."

45.3

Vinay Kumar to Faulkner, 1 run, he waits and steers the length delivery to backward point for a single

45.4

Vinay Kumar to Bailey, 1 run, length delivery on off, the batsman dabs it towards mid-on and takes the first easily, but then he thinks about a second. Vinay, in the meantime, had run to the ball and fires a throw at the non-striker's. Had that hit, it was curtains for Bailey, but he survives

45.5

Vinay Kumar to Faulkner, 1 run, he stays in the crease and clips the back of length delivery to deep backward square leg

45.6

Vinay Kumar to Bailey, FOUR, smart pull shot again! It was short of length outside off, instead of pulling it along the ground like he was doing earlier, Bailey chooses to go straighter and in the air, he finds the gap at wide long-on and it just drops short of the boundary

Ashwin to Bailey, FOUR, he makes room my moving outside leg and thuds this through extra cover, once it beats the man at extra cover, it picks up speed

46.3

Ashwin to Bailey, OUT, and he holes out at deep midwicket! The shot was on though, it was a tossed up delivery on off and Bailey aimed for the stands at deep midwicket, he just doesn't get as much as he would have liked behind that and the fielder takes a simple catch right on the edge of the boundary

46.5

manoj: "Why isn't Bailey not playing for Australia in Test matches. Doesn't he fit into the 'already struggling' middle order in the longest format of the game?"

46.6

Ashwin to Faulkner, 2 runs, tossed up and full on off, the batsman pushes it to wide mid-on for an easy single, but Ashwin was not watching the throw from the fielder and allows an overthrow

Vinay comes round the wicket

47.1

Vinay Kumar to Johnson, 1 run, angled in to the batsman, who tucks it to midwicket for a single

Ravi: "Wonder about the fast bowling stocks of India. We hardly produce a quality bowler to be called a spearhead of Indian attack. BK is the best choice with swinging ball and the rest what are they good at? pace? swing? death bowling?!!"

47.2

Vinay Kumar to Faulkner, 2 runs, length delivery on off, the batsman gives it mighty swing and it goes way up in the air towards deep midwicket, between the two worst fielders - Ishant and Ashwin - and it lands safely between them. It should have been Ishant's

47.3

Vinay Kumar to Faulkner, SIX, another length ball, but this time Faulkner gets it in the meat, it's flat and it flies through that gap between Ashwin and Ishant again

47.4

Vinay Kumar to Faulkner, SIX, and again, even bigger now, Ishant and Ashwin can keep looking now, this one is in the stands

47.5

Vinay Kumar to Faulkner, 1 run, bowls a wide yorker now, the batsman can only dig it out towards long on for a single

Purav: "@Lakshman: Probably enough to sneak in an India-SA series in those 20 mins."

47.6

Vinay Kumar to Johnson, no run, length delivery on off stump, slightly slower as well, the batsman defends it back to the bowler

48.1

Kumar to Faulkner, no run, fuller length delivery on off, the batsman inside edge it on to his pads as he looks for a drive through off

48.2

Kumar to Faulkner, 1 run, he bowls a good yorker on off, which gets a thick outside edge and flies low to the right of Dhoni. It didn't carry, but Dhoni gets a hand to it

48.3

Kumar to Johnson, no run, attempts a premeditated paddle, but Bhuvi bowls it wide outside off, the batsman misses

48.4

Kumar to Johnson, FOUR, he misses his length by just a fraction, ends up bowling a half-volley and it's hammered down the ground, all along the turf

48.5

Kumar to Johnson, FOUR, and he errs the other way now, it's a low full toss on off and the batsman muscles it to the gap at deep midwicket

48.6

Kumar to Johnson, no run, another length ball and it was in Johnson's arc, somehow it misses the bat, and also the off stump

End of over 49 (9 runs) Australia 291/7 (RR: 5.93)

And to bowl the final over, we have Ishant

49.1

I Sharma to Faulkner, 2 runs, bowls a full and wide delivery outside off and he is lucky not to give away four, the batsman gets a toe-end in his drive and Jadeja covers it up at deep extra cover

49.2

I Sharma to Faulkner, OUT, Ishant gives a stare to the batsman! It was another wide and full delivery, and unlike the previous delivery, Faulkner gets a whole lot of bat in this one, times this one perfectly, but just hits it at catchable hight at Vinay Kumar at extra cover. The fielder times his jump and plucks it

McKay comes in

49.3

I Sharma to McKay, no run, he drives the length delivery slightly in the air, straight to point

49.4

I Sharma to McKay, FOUR, back of length delivery outside off, McKay likes it, he flat-bats it to wide long-on boundary with utmost ease. The mid-on was in, and he is being sent back now

49.5

I Sharma to McKay, SIX, slower delivery on a length, asking to be hit, McKay swings and gets it right of the meat, sends it soaring in the Pune sky to the stands at deep midwicket

Aus beyond 300

49.6

I Sharma to McKay, 1 run, he gets a low full toss that's driven to long-on for a single

Australia have done well to bring up a strong total here, 304. It was led by a well-controlled opening stand between Aaron Finch and Phil Hughes, and then there were excellent but contrasting contributions in the middle order by George Bailey and Glen Maxwell. On a pitch that is slow, Australia would be very happy with what they have achieved here. Yuvraj Singh conspired to slow the Australians down with a couple of wickets in the middle and a run-out as well, but India's main bowlers struggled to put the check on scoring. Back in 45 minutes

Vikrant Kakde: "Impressive over rate by India. Gone are the days when Dhoni was used to being charged with slow over rate."

Rohit Verma: "With these types of flat batting wickets, I am sorry to say that there will be odd good bowling spells here and there but I do not think India will ever have a good bowling attack. And onus is on the Indian Cricketing management for what they are providing to play on!"

Ekant: "I don't understand Dhoni's tactics at times. BK was by far the best Indian pacer today and he ends up bowling only 7 overs. Waste of resource which is already very scarce in Indian context."
