A thoughtful analysis as usual from Dravid..Regarding Rahane,he has been given opportunities in ODI cricket(although hasnt played those ODI's consecutively)which he hasnt taken..Averaging just around 25..Also Dhoni likes openers who are pace setters and give momentum(choosing dhawan and vijay) to the team..Rahane is a grinder and better suited for middle order..I think his chance will come only when sachin retires or may be in south africa where dhoni may opt to bat at no:7,rahane taking no:6 and jadeja out of playing 11..
Here is what I think I would do if I was the Captain/Coach/Selector: First, demote I. Sharma, H. Singh, and S. Tendulkar. These are not good now. Encourage Sachin to retire. Open with Vijay and Pujara. Force Sehwag and Gambhir to retire. Form a new team around Vijay and Pujara. Dhoni should retire in a year. Term limits for Captains. Make Pujara the future captain.
Posted by jayeshvk on (March 19, 2013, 15:06 GMT)The best opportunity to try out Rahane is in 4th test. If Dhawan not fit, open with Pujara and Vijay, Kohli @ 3, Sachin @ 4 and Rahane @ 5. If Dhawan playing, rest Sachin and bring Rahane to no.5 and promote Kohli to no.4
Posted by hnlns on (March 19, 2013, 12:59 GMT)It is absolutely a great idea to bring in Rahane with no pressure on India now. Tendulkar must be "RESTED" if that looks a respectable way of putting things in perspective. Also, bringing in somebody like Dhinda to replace Ishant Sharma would be really good as well, since he is a very hard working guy who puts in honest effort and can be put to test in Delhi on what is a rank dead surface and a real graveyard for fast bowlers.
Posted bysachin is not doing any great wonder now and is now an also ran player in the team. plus he is a liability in the field. time to bring rahane in place of sachin for the delhi test.
Posted by Sir.Ivor on (March 19, 2013, 12:09 GMT)This is the season it seems, in which the message coming home is that it is about time to realise that India does have a wealth of good youngsters to choose from. If it was Dhoni at Chenna it was Pujara and Vijay in Hyderabad and now Dhawan,Bhuvaneshvar and Jadeja in Mohali. In keeping with that trend, I feel that the time for Rahane has come as Rahul says. But quite apart from this reason of serendipity, Rahane is perhaps as deserving as Pujara is. Both have been not just domestic galacticas but have sound cricketing ability as well. And they have been so for the last 5 years or so. Dhawan too waited but when he got the chance he showed everyone how wrong the selectors were in having kept him away. Rahul Dravid knows what he is talking about when he judges a cricketer. His earnestness does'nt just come out of IPL association. It comes from having seen Ajinkya Rahane from close quarters as a batsman. There is simply no two ways about it. Rahane must play but in the middle order.
Posted by Sakz on (March 19, 2013, 10:24 GMT)@ Dravid_grvitas You just put your judgement and made the decision that who will be in team n who will not be? You see only one poor kid n what about many others who are awaiting their chances before him, Rayadu,Manoj Tiwari, n others.( You should be made Indian team selector). there are many waiting for their chances that doesn't mean you put all of them in team ,they will have to earn it in a hard way ,seeing the competition nowadays. Abt sachin, what is bothering u about him? that he is still playing? Or when he makes run he does so for his records....and when Murali and dhawan scores ,they do it for the country....I think murli, dhawan and any other newcomer is only playing for himself more than sachin....coz if they don't perform whether India wins or not they will soon be out of the team.Have you ever seen a batsman who celebrates when team's total scores reaches 100 or 200 ,they raise their bat only when they make 100..so, do keep in mind everybody plays for himself only.
Posted by mihir_nam on (March 19, 2013, 8:39 GMT)Rahane since 2011 in Indian team. Well if he don't get 2-3 chances to prove himself. In South Africa entire team is going to fail 0-3. No need for him to play there again. and now when Dhawan is injured they will try to bring Raina for Middle order. and fit in. Pujara Vijay will open then Kholi Rahane again misses out. Rahane should follow example of KP,Trott and should find himself new home like New Zealand,Zimbabwe,Ireland
Posted by muthu4664 on (March 19, 2013, 6:23 GMT)This Guy As much as talented like Pujara. Both are the run machines at Domestic cricket. If he can translate the same success at International Level then Indian Batting will be World Beaters.
Posted by Dravid_Gravitas on (March 19, 2013, 4:19 GMT)Please drop Statchin if Dhawan is fit and let Rahane play. That poor kid deserves his place in the team. Very sorry for Rahane. I'm fortunate to have watched him closely in IPL, as I go wherever Rahul anna goes.
