India's selectors could have finally run out of patience with the established Test opening combination. ESPNcricinfo understands* that at least two selectors want Wasim Jaffer in the squad for the Australia Tests, "most probably" replacing Gautam Gambhir.

The Sandeep Patil-headed selection panel will meet on Sunday to pick the squad for, most probably, the first two Tests against Australia. The panel is likely to retain most of the other batsmen who featured in the 15 for the Nagpur Test against England but the faltering openers will be under the scanner.

With M Vijay hitting a century in the Irani Cup and Jaffer having plundered 915 runs from 12 innings this season, the growing feeling among the selectors is that both Vijay and Jaffer "deserve to be in the squad". While Vijay was the reserve opener during the Test series against England, Jaffer last played for India almost five years ago.

Despite increasing doubts over Virender Sehwag and Gambhir's place in the side, a couple of selectors also feel the Delhi pair deserves to be given "one final chance". Though Sehwag, who pulled out of the Irani Cup tie with a stomach upset, scored a century in the opening Test against England in Ahmedabad, he lost his place in the ODI side soon after.

Gambhir's drought of centuries has extended over three years, and he has averaged just over 30 since then. If the pro-Jaffer selectors manage to convince the rest of their colleagues, the casualty will "most probably" be Gambhir.

While Ajinkya Rahane set to be retained as the reserve batsmen, Ravindra Jadeja, who made a surprising debut at No. 6 in the Nagpur Test, could make way for either Suresh Raina or Rohit Sharma.

In the spin department, R Ashwin and Pragyan Ojha are assured of leading the attack. It will again be a toss-up between Piyush Chawla, who played the last Test against England, and Harbhajan Singh for the reserve spinner's slot.

Although Harbhajan is on the verge of leading Rest of India to the Irani title, his performance with the ball hasn't been compelling in the domestic season. His lack of "big-wicket hauls" may go against him though his outstanding record at home against Australia could prove "too difficult to ignore" for the selectors.

With Zaheer Khan, Umesh Yadav and Irfan Pathan recovering from injuries, the selectors will have a tough task of finding their replacements; they may have to rely on the second string of pace bowlers. Though Ishant Sharma's ankle pain recurred recently, he is expected to be available for the Test series.

The contenders for the remaining two fast bowlers' slots will include Sreesanth, who has recovered from multiple toe surgeries, Madhya Pradesh's Ishwar Pandey, the highest wicket-taker in the Ranji Trophy season, Shami Ahmed and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, both of whom have impressed on their limited-overs' debuts against England and Pakistan. Ashok Dinda and Parvinder Awana, both of whom were in the squad for the Nagpur Test, are "out of reckoning".

The selectors had dropped Zaheer, Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan after losing the third Test against England.

MS Dhoni and coach Duncan Fletcher are unlikely to attend the meeting, to be held at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai, and it is "almost unlikely" that the selectors will discuss replacing Dhoni as captain.

Likely squad: MS Dhoni (capt & wk), Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir/ Wasim Jaffer, M Vijay, Cheteshwar Pujara, Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, Ravindra Jadeja/ Suresh Raina/ Rohit Sharma, R Ashwin, Pragyan Ojha, Harbhajan Singh/ Piyush Chawla, Ishant Sharma, Sreesanth/ Shami Ahmed, Ishwar Pandey/ Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Stop hanging on to old coots and give the new guys a chance. In a country of a billion cricket mad people, there have got to be better options than crummy Srishanth. We cannot keep rewarding mediocrity and select the same old non performers. If we are really out of quality seamers, I would rather fill that slot with a budding alrounder.

Posted by guru1964 on (February 10, 2013, 12:01 GMT)

I don't think Dinda was the right choice as replacement pacer. Shamim Ahmed was a better option. Harbhajan may play his 100th test but was it necessary to look back. When the selectors did not take Jafer on the ground that Dhawan and Vijay was the way forward, why differ for Bhajji? It is time to blood new players. Australians are doing it and will have a good team by the end of 2013-14. Why does India balk at dropping big names?

We lost the Eden Gardern test match becuase f GG,because of him Shewag run out in the firt innings and he called Pujara for a non existing single and he became runout. And he is always saying bad aginst Dhoni in the press. Dhawan is a good option,Jadeja in number six can provide Dhoni a chance to bat one postion up remember he scored 99 in the last test in that position and there are three players who can bat follows dhoni Aswin,Jadeja & B Kumar that will take lot of pressure from Dhoni. So i hope in this series we will see Dhoni as effective as in ODI ,So Aswin,Ohja,Buvi,Ishant as bolwers and Jadeja as the fifth bowling option remember he bowled 70 overs in the Last test.

Khudos to the selection team for dropping Ghambir who was just a passenger and liability for the team. With his experience, players like him shouldn't be content with securing their places with a mere, 30 or 40 listless runs which do not make any impact to the team's cause and this move would sure send the right signals to Viru too and he should either perform or perish! But, why Harbhajan? Isn't this a step in backward direction? Aren't there spinners to look to, beyond Harbhajan, Amit Mishra and Piyush? Ashwin if doesn't perform in these 2 tests, should be dumped once and for all as we need a bowler and not an allrounder. We already have one in Jadeja who too instead of being content with bots and pieces performances, should deliver more to hold on to his place. My team for the first 2 tests will be: Viru, Vijay, Pujara, Kohli, Tendulkar, Jadeja, Dhoni, Ashwin, B.Kumar, Ishant & Ojha and these players should get to play the 2 tests to assess their utility and retained / discarded.

CAPTAIN COOL is gonna take india to the top!

Posted by   on (February 10, 2013, 8:26 GMT)

After the 2nd innings performance I feel Rohit can be dropped from Mumbai side too, and Bhajji is definitely bowling better than Ojha and I hope Dhoni and Duncan are watching the match on TV. Wasim Jaffer is a class apart he should open for India against Australia. Sreesanth should also be picked

Posted by purusottamsamarath23 on (February 10, 2013, 8:08 GMT)

Jaffer and Gambhir both are good players but during this season with in the Indian domestic tournament/domestic pitch Jaffer plays better than Gambhir's last series with in the country during England series, so selector may be look after Jaffer's performance at least for the next series with in the country side as opener in the place of Gambhir.

Posted by   on (February 10, 2013, 7:52 GMT)

Jaffer should get chance how much one should prove to the selector. how long selector will give chance to rohit sharma and why is manoj tiwary not getting ample chance. in bowler i would like to see harbhajan, ishwar panday, and b kumar should be given chance. Need to change the captain if dhoni is sagged from captaincy then he will struggle to be in playing XI. Other wicket keeper batsman are getting tons of runs in domestic. if they dont get chance to play then how will the bench strength will improve. so selectors should keep this in mind before selecting the team.

@tanstell87 kohli is in bad form then is rahane in good form??? He is so called good backfoot player but he is so obsessed with that backfoot of his that the ball that could have been easily put away for boundaries on fronfoot he was defending them on backfoot too.Gambhir and rahane are one of the most irritating pair of recent times reason being they just know how to play edgy stroke through fine leg and thirdman so a player with talent like kohli definitely deserve a place, at least more than Rahane as last time i checked Kohli did score a match winning 78* against england in ODI what did Rahane do?

Posted by sahasranaman on (February 10, 2013, 7:31 GMT)

Hi time we see Sehwag and Gambhir dropped. They nid 2 play atlest 2 seasons of Domestic cricket wer they have 2 perform consistently. Not tat just a couple of solid scores seeing em back in2 d team. Wat our team nids r youngsters coming 2d party. Id like 2c shikar dhawan open alongwith rahane. Simply because both of em r gud players or short stuff. No matter how dead a pitch India prepares 4d visiting OZ team, they will surely give em sum sweet chin music every now nd then. So With Dhawan, Rahane and Pujara at d top im sure they have 3 gud players of short pitch bowling. Needless 2 mention SRT nd MSD also play d short pitch bowling well. One saving grace 4 gambhir can be if he can fit into d No 6 position wer India is currently pondering whom to fit. He provides d southpaw angle nd also d ball might be little old to his comfort nd help him back to form. All in all this team should play with youngsters and not out of form oldies!!! And SRT, watch out for low scores and lack of form!!!!

@nyv_missile: Sachin just outscored Jaffer, Rahane, Rohit, Vijay and Dhawan in the recent Irani trophy match... are you seriously recommending him being taken out of the test team?

Posted by AR_22 on (February 10, 2013, 7:15 GMT)

RGS selection on what grounds?????d selectors will send a wrong message to the likes of tiwary nd rayudu if dey pick RGS....yes rohit has got the talent but he must earn his place in the side....

Posted by   on (February 10, 2013, 7:05 GMT)

I can tolerate watching Jadeja instead of Nohit Sharma as Jadeja still can field superbly and bowl some tight overs in-between. But still both should not be considered in the final 11.Better to go with Sehwag at no. 6 and open with Gambhir and Jaffer.Ask Sehwag to bowl some overs also.If Sehwag and Gambhir fails, Please drop them forever.I would request selectors to find an alternative of Ashwin and Harbhajan, as the former doesn't have the patience to bowl the six consistent deliveries at the same spot and often releases the pressure by offering freebies. The latter is completely out of sorts and have forgotten how to out even the inexperienced first class batters.

Posted by ArvindReddy on (February 10, 2013, 7:05 GMT)

Ambati Rayudu, the man who can able to perform well in all formats of the game. Why selectors are not thinking abt him? He is a good fielder & keeper too... Please please giv him a chance. Dont go for Jadeja, Vijay & Gambhir always.

Posted by   on (February 10, 2013, 7:03 GMT)

My squad of India's Test series against Australia would be. Shikar Dhawan, Sehwag, Pujara, Sachin, Kohli, Jadeja, Dhoni, Ashwin, Ojha, ZaheerKhan, BhuwaneshKumar. Reserves: M Vijay, Rahane, Harbhajan, Umesh Yadav.

Posted by skvinod on (February 10, 2013, 6:56 GMT)

Sehwag to be given a last chance, Gauti has serious technical flaws creeping into his batting and his time is definitely up. This series should be Sachin's Swan Song. Get Vijay to open with Rayadu on the stand by. Manoj Tiwari, Rahane and Raina should fight for the #6 spot.

On the spin bowling front, Ashwin should be sent back to the domestic circuit for the longer format, Bajji can be given his last chance with Ojha / chawla playing the role of the second spinner. R Jadeja should be groomed as a shorter format specialist.

Fast bowling options are I Sharma (subject to fitness) and Sreeshant with B Kumar and Dinda as backups.

nyc_missile - the most clear comment ... rest is just hogwash.

Posted by kdevil3 on (February 10, 2013, 6:50 GMT)

Please No more Gambhir Again .He cant play bigger innings .The way he bats it looks like he just manages to survives still 30-40's .Its just a matter of one good length ball on the Off stump -Keeper or slip caught.Jaffer is good option but temporary only .With Vijay i dont think he s capable of playing a test match winning innings & not consistent enough .We need some one like Cook who can play big innings . For just Aus series Jaffer is the best option. Bowling we need Umesh is must Sreesanth to add some spice .Bhuv ,irfan ,aswhin, oja more new spinner( No chawla please)

Posted by rashivkd on (February 10, 2013, 6:43 GMT)

When we were talking about a guy aged more than 30, people thinking its going backwards. I can't understand the logic about it. Cricket is all about playing ball by ball, over by over, session by session, then why people thinking like he can only play two more years. If he can play well in two years for India, that is a huge achievement. If he can give a solid start against Aus and SA, that is enough.

It is just repeating the mistake we had done it before. We all remember the CB series in Aus, where we given opportunity to R Sharma and sat out SRT or Veru, and result is India didn't reach the final and R Sharma failed poorly in Srilanka. So we have to look each series by series. I am not saying Jiwanjot or any other player not enough. Allow him to settle more in the domestic circuit as he only played odd 10 matches, let us see how he will improve.

Posted by getsetgopk on (February 10, 2013, 6:29 GMT)

Never in my life I have seen any cricket board that deliberately adopted a policy to squash test cricket in a country. As an outsider and a keen observer and admirer of test cricket I believe the Indian fans are being let down by their board for the sake of money. Grounds are not jam packed so they thought oh lets get rid of test cricket all together. People often blame PCB as the most incompetent board in world cricket but in reality its BCCI who is after test cricket in her own country. And I say this when I see names like Dhoni, Ghambir and Sehwag in their lineup. How many matches will India have to loose before any change is initiated? Its high time India is thrown out and banned from test cricket before they further drag the most important format of the game.

Shewag should play... say bye to gambhir.... For wht dash u bringing rohit sharma... ask him to watch in tv... raina should play... shwag & vijay should open the innings...

will somebody please explain to me why is Ambati Rayudu not being considered? He seems like a much safer option compared to Raina or Rohit Sharma.

Posted by   on (February 10, 2013, 6:14 GMT)

i think rohit sharma temperament is under the scanner..he seems to be too casual at times...but will love to see him fix his spot whenever given a go!jaffer is a treat to watch nd gambhir is absolute failure nd annoying nd its been now for some time..jaffer should be in!! well, dhoni would stay,i think..but very surprised to see him again and again despite of his frequent poor tactics in tests..i am not saying this just now,,when india were winning,,still it didnt mean that dhoni was right,,but the team was such that dhoni's fault was overshadowed!!! I AM IN FOR A SURPRISE SELECTION(THOUGH ON SELECTOR'S PART THIS WILL BE A NO DIFFERENT SELECTION) India huge favourite despite all

Posted by Karnamkotil on (February 10, 2013, 6:14 GMT)

Woohooo !! Wasim Jaffer!(even though not yet selected) I always felt that age should not be a factor in a Test match & that to in d home conditions. Its a selfish plan, but at least, u r bulletproof at home. Its all about winning. (better plan than the Chapple under arm ball to win a match) Jaffer is 36yrs, so he can play till 40, means we have 4 yrs & thats a good time for any team. (Remember Mark Richardsn of NZ). Side by side we can build a young batsman in d that time. Looking at the current Ind domestic form- These people must be given a chance - Jaffer, M.Vijay. I also feel, y cant we give Rohit a chance in d entire Test series? He'll get enough time in Test & if succeeded, can take his form to ODI. If failed, TERMINATE him! But we dont want him in ODIs anymore.

Posted by   on (February 10, 2013, 6:02 GMT)

Yes .. Rohit Sharmah should be picked ..So what he has faltered for last 5 years ? He has the God Given Talent and he is World's Greatest batsman in Net ..

Posted by   on (February 10, 2013, 6:00 GMT)

with India looking to build a team for the future...I think the selectors might not think of Wasim Jaffer as opener to replace Gautam Gambhir. But if they have this series' win on their mind (against Australia), they Jaffer would get a nod, which is mostly unlikely.

Jaffer, Sehvag, Pujara, Sachin, Kohil, Rehane, Dhoni, Harbhajan, Sree, Pande, Oza. Extra - Aswin, Awna, Jadeja

rayudu ,jaffer ,raina,m.vijay IN...sehwag,gambhir OUT..still doubt rahane's spot as opener after england series...he's a bit scratchy against the new ball ...middle order is pretty no tinkering with it ...pace attack must consist of bhuv.kumar, shami ahmed, iswar pandey , the squad....spin attack..ashwin and ojha are good enough for inexperienced oz batting...harbhajan reserves.. my final XI for 1st test : 1.jaffer 2.M.vijay 3.pujara 4.sachin 5.kohli 6.raina 7.dhoni 8.ashwin 9.sreesanth 10.shami ahmed/b.kumar 11.ojha...

@nyc_missile...why are you delivering such hate speeches like akbar owaisi...If you read Geoff boycott's perspective,he says India is lucky to have Dhoni as captain in these times of transition....And you dont have a better choice ...And it was under him we became no1 test team after Kumble's period...Then would you attribute the entire success to Dhoni alone...Obviously not, similarly cant blame him entirely for the loss..4th test in australia he did not play...We failed under Sehwag..So the unit is struggling,we need to support thenot shout slogans....

Posted by   on (February 10, 2013, 5:33 GMT)

Mike Hussey at 30, Jonathan Trott at 29 ,George Bailey at 30 represented respective countries for the first time. Thilan Samarweera came back into Sri Lankan side after a decade and cemented his place. why cant we ignore the age factor and ask someone like WASEEM JAFFER to open for India in test series against Australia? after all its a crisis situation for us, isnt it ? Jaffer has scored more than 1000 runs in his last 15 innings (12-13 first class games) JAFFER deserves it. at least give him a chance to fail then drop him.

Posted by FAB_ALI on (February 10, 2013, 5:32 GMT)

I would be very happy if Selectors pick.......1. Sehwag 2. Vijay/Jaffer 3. Dhawan 4. Tendulkar 5. Kohli 6. Pujara 7. Rahane 8. Dhoni 9. Jadeja 10. Ashwin 11. Harbhajan 12. Ojha/Mishra 13. Ishant 14. Sreesanth 15. Bhuvneshwar.

Posted by aakkil on (February 10, 2013, 5:31 GMT)

hoping there is at least one who could analyse indian domestic cricket honestly.selector going by numbers, giving chances to ball hitters(eg-raina , vijay and rohit). abhinav mukund, dhavan should open for india, jaffer is a good player, but has anybody ask about the wickets mumbai played on. Flat batting paradise .while TN played eighter on seaming wickets or squire turner at home. We need a selector who is respected and can make right decision at right time.

Posted by   on (February 10, 2013, 5:00 GMT)

shewag need for austrial test in india.......because he is expirenced person

give him first test chance.... if he play well continue him other wise remove him for second test

Posted by   on (February 10, 2013, 4:59 GMT)

Surely he should be picked up for the upcoming Australia series. Indian team desperately need an opening batsman who can go through an Innings.

Posted by Neeta on (February 10, 2013, 4:50 GMT)

I believe that one of Gambhir or Sehwag should move down the order. For me it is Gambhir as he has the ability to attack the spinners and play them with aplomb. Also the selectors should now start selecting the team on the basis of the playing conditions. For eg: There is no problem having Raina or even Jadeja at the no.6 slot in home conditions but for the overseas we need to have someone technically correct playing at that important spot. For me that is Rohit Sharma who despite his ordinary List A performances is given continuous oppurtunities in ODI's and tests's while he is really suited for the longer format. Swing should be our weapon if we can't find fast bowlers. Play Irfan, B.Kumar overseas and make them operate with the new ball and see them wreak havoc upon the opposition with Zak and Yadav as the supporting acts. This should be the policy for the future selections.By the way, no more Jaffer please we have already seen how inconsistent the guy is at int'l level.

Posted by Sir.Ivor on (February 10, 2013, 4:46 GMT)

Jaffer Rahane Pujara Tendulkar Kohli,Sehwag,Jadeja Dhoni,Bhuvaneshwar,Ishant,Ashwin,Mishra, is probably the way to go. Sehwag started his ODI carreer as a No 6 allrounder. He should get back to where he belongs.Besides he has an excellent record in Chennai. Mishra has a good record against Australia and should be in consideration.Jaffer and Rahane have been a good opening pair for Mumbai and that should be extended to Tests. The selectors must heed these small points because they are as important as conditions of play like the type of pitches, moving ball or swinging ball and such things. This business of having the same XI coming up for all matches should be a thing of the past. So if someone has a got a 100 in the last match played at Kotla, it should not be a benchmark for his selection in the next game if it is in Perth because it calls for a different set of skills to play on that wicket. I hope the selectors will imbibe this philosophy and people accept it as a practical way to go.

Posted by gpindian on (February 10, 2013, 4:46 GMT)

When you talk about test cricket, only performance and form should be taken into consideration - not age. If a 40 year and 36 year old are performing better than the Rohit Sharma's, they should be in the team. Period. And yes, playing Sehwag down the order is a good idea. He is surely better than the likes of Raina and Yuvraj.

Posted by   on (February 10, 2013, 4:42 GMT)

Jaffer has been a deserving opener from quite some time now....The more we avoid him the more we are wasting his talent.

Posted by cricketkumar on (February 10, 2013, 4:33 GMT)

Wasim Jaffer should be recalled. Murali Vijay has been given enough chances.

Posted by Sachit1979 on (February 10, 2013, 4:33 GMT)

If selectors have vision for team India just to survive in this series then they would dig the grave even deeper. Problem with team India is their world famous struggle against fast and swing bowling. You could bring in anyone from domestic circuit and with good form, he would play well on flat tracks and spin friendly conditions against any rivals. But the problem would re-emerge whenever team would go anywhere outside subcontinent. Dada, Laxman, Dravid gone forever. Sachin may be 1 or 2 series more. After them, do we have answers to Steyn, Morkel, Anderson, Roach, Cummins, Pattinson, Starc etc in their conditions. Pujara and Kohli are promising but need to work on their consistency. Rest nobody else is around who look confident against pace. Captaincy is another serious issue to be addressed. MSD still holding in tests only because nobody else is ready yet to hold it. I would be keen to see whether selectors address these issues or just blanket them until next series and move on.

Posted by   on (February 10, 2013, 4:28 GMT)

Considering future in the mind selectors will not select the player who ages 35 for the important serious, though he has good 1st class record selectors will look for another options like vijay, dhawan who also has impressive record and also they have still 10 years of cricket left. Its very important serious for both the side, india has to prove that they are good in Test cricket and Ozz needs to build the good team for back to back Ashes. Probables may ::: MS Dhoni (Capt & WK), veeru/Gauti, Vijay/Dhawan, pujara, kohli, SRT, Raina/Tiwari, Jaddu, Ashwin, Ohja, Bhajji, Ishanth, Sreesanth, Bhuvanesh kumar ect.

Some interesting stats, Tests outside subcontinent AVERAGES: Sehwag: SA (25.46) AUS (46.86) NZ (20) Eng (27.80), total 5 centuries in Asia 58.76, need i say more for this GREAT player lol

Gambhir: SA (60.50) AUS (22.62) NZ (89) Eng (17) total 2 centuries--> only toured these countries once! Better than Viru but current form on last 3 years, pathetic

MS Dhoni: SA (31.44) AUS (18.69) NZ (77) Eng (39)... Much better than most other indian wicket-keepers of the past.

Wasim Jaffer: SA (30.83) AUS (8.16) Eng (24.40) total 1 century--> only toured these countries once! but age not on his side

SO.. do is it time for youngster, DHAWAN, RAHANE, MUKUND to get their chance to open. NEXT 2 YEARS india TOUR SA, NZ, ENG, WI.. we need a good set of openers! LETS go TEAM INDIA

Posted by AjberTheGangulian on (February 10, 2013, 4:20 GMT)

Jaffer definetly my choice not because he is 35 but he lack technique to stay in bouncy tracks.. He was completely failure on his last Aussee tour though he was amid a good form at home.. So his performance in subcontinent prove nothing.. As far as age is concerned , test cricket should be played by Men not by t20 kids.. Take all players in form despite of their ages

Posted by jmcilhinney on (February 10, 2013, 4:09 GMT)

It seems to me that the India selectors just keep rotating Raina, Yuvraj and Rohit. One comes in, might make a score or two but doesn't really do well and then the next comes in. Round and round it goes. I can't help thinking that it's time to break that cycle. I also feel that they would be better off dropping Sehwag down the order. He seems amenable to that himself and he seems to have lost his edge that made him such a danger at the top of the order. With his diabolical lack of footwork, even a small loss of reflex and eye-hand coordination makes him a liability against the new ball and that seems to be the case. While fast starts are great, he could be far more effective now coming in against tired bowlers and an older ball.

It is about time Gambhir gets the axe, he has forgotten to play with a straight bat. Let us try Jaffar as a stop gap until we find someone else. Either that or bring in Ajinkya Rahane and look at him long term. As for Rohit Sharma, I personally feel he is happier with the IPL and unwilling to make the sort of commitment needed to play for India.

I still remember how desperate Shivalkar, Hans, Doshi etc., were so unfortunate to make the Indian XI in the presence of Bedi, Pras, Chandra and Venky. We were so proud of our spinners and now wonder what has happened.

Posted by vathabivaranan on (February 10, 2013, 3:02 GMT)

My dear Editor! I enjoy and appreciate whenever you call a spade is a spade. Now I wonder why you are not calling certain spades! For instance, Harbhajan's records good against Australia. Fine but, when? When Steve was the captain,Harbhajan's record was very good, Now except Clark nobody who played then is in the Australian team, Further technology helped all over to expose even an ordinary batsman the loopholes in the Off-spinner's deliveries. And, Harbhajan has also lost the bite in his deliveries on pitches which offer some bite for bowlers. It is our country's pride to do well against any team. Simply if we say Harbhajan is good against Aussies, will not hold any water. Similarly how many chances were given to Gambir and Sewag. They should have scored atleast a 50 at every 3rd innings they played in the last few months! When not good, remove them and give chances to other batsman who prove time and again and patiently sitting in the bench seeing non-performers.

oh boy,the Rohit haters are back! Bet most of these worthies don't even know he hasn't made a DEBUT YET.Cut the man some slack and give him a full series if not 10 matches like Sehwag,Gambhir & Sachin have got despite atrocious performances.

@ Cpt.Meanster on (February 9, 2013, 18:18 GMT) : I've got to say that I agree with you, in principle anyway. When you look at the facts, there is no way Australia should win this. Our batting is significantly weaker than when you were in Australia last year due to no Mike Hussey this time. His value to our team simply can't be over-estimated. .. looking at our top order batting, only Watson and Clarke have any experience in India. The rest of them will have to learn on the job. It's even worse with the bowling. By my reckoning, unless Mitch Johnson gets a run, NONE of our bowlers have had any time bowling in Indian conditions. .. really, you SHOULD win this one quite comfortably. ... about Gambhir and Sehwag. I would say that the Aussies are hoping they will play. I'm pretty sure they don't rate Gambhir against genuine pace and while you should always be worried about Sehwag, I think they can live with the "hit or miss" way he has been batting recently. Exciting series ahead imo

Why not Ambati Rayudu compared to Raina, Jadeja and Rohit. Atleast he is better in second innings than these three.

Posted by tanstell87 on (February 10, 2013, 1:51 GMT)

i hope selectors pick Wasim Jaffer with a view on away tours in the future....Jaffer has a test hundred in against South Africa in South Africa + a double hundred against West Indies in West Indies..after this series India play their test cricket away in South Africa at the end of the year,in New Zealand in Feb 2014 ,in England in July-August 2014 & finally in Australia in December 2014.

Posted by WC2011Champs on (February 10, 2013, 1:37 GMT)

Please no Rohit Sharma. He has to work on consistency in domestic cricket first and occasionally be tested in ODIs. It is 5-days game and if he gets out early which is highly likely event it would be a hard grind for other players for five days. I would back Jadeja who has stamina (scored 300+ twice) to field, bowl, and bat some (that will only improve) in longest format. Call it rotation policy and bring Bhajji in playing XI for Ashwin who is struggling to take wickets. It is crucial to start the series on good note and for that reason give Gambhir a break for the first two tests and pick someone in form. Then again come real test Sachin (centuries before England series and now), Yuvraj (200+ before England series), Rahane will find it hard to carry on.

Posted by tanstell87 on (February 10, 2013, 1:32 GMT)

my 11 for Australia series - 1.Sehwag 2.Jaffer 3.Pujara 4.Tendulkar 5.Rahane 6.Dhoni 7.Nayar 8.Harbhajan 9.Amit Mishra 10.Bhuvneshwar 11.Ojha

no need to play good for Ashwin & out of form Kohli

Posted by sportofpain on (February 10, 2013, 1:10 GMT)

Jaffer didn't get enough chances compared to Gambhir - he was dropped after an indifferent tour to Australia 5 years ago. But he has 5 test hundreds including a double hundred against the Windies in the caribbean - perhaps only the great Gavaskar has also done that. So picking him is worth it since that experience is needed in the batting esp now. Viru should play since he is a match winner so Gambhir may have to sit out- 3 years without a test hundred is very troubling for a specialist bat right at the top of the order.

Posted by Dhanno on (February 9, 2013, 23:21 GMT)

This is joke of an article. They put Jaffer headline, but really its about spreading word that "vijay is in contention". Why ? Done nothing whole ranji season, you guys have Rahane who is opener. Ok moving on. "rahane will get chance as reserve batsman in middle order". Why ? We need opener, rahane made FC debut in pakistan, as opener, at 19 (mohammed nissar trophy) and scored hundred. So why is he reserve middle order? And whom is he acting as reserve ? Oh wait here is the kicker " Rohit/ raina will come to squad in place of Jadeja". One flat track bully and another pleasant on eye but huge failure. But due to nepotism one fav goes out (jadeja) another will make in (raina/ rohit). so there is nothing new here. You are saying most likely team will consists of Vijay/sehwag opening. kohli/pujara/ sachin dhoni (again useless), + raina/rohit and Rahane as backup.

Stop kidding yourself. This is same failed batting lineup you are wrapping in new paper and selling.

Posted by brusselslion on (February 9, 2013, 22:50 GMT)

Let's face it. Anyone would be an improvement on Gambhir. When the going gets tough, Gambhir certainly gets going - as far away from the action as possible.

Posted by TM on (February 9, 2013, 22:26 GMT)

Wasim jaffer? why? we should be looking at the future i think its time for Jiwanjot singh hes shown he can score runs on a green mohali track why not take a left field selection Vijay is not a test quality player he struggled today and hasnt had a consistent ranji trophy. As for raina hes consistently shown hes not test class rohit and jadeja should be in the squad as jadeja can feild and bowl aswell as being as good a batsman as raina and rohit deserves a chance in tests it could be what he needs as hes never had a chance he could thrive

Posted by LetThereBeLogic on (February 9, 2013, 21:55 GMT)

I think that our middle order is still solid. Pujara, Sachin, Kohli & Dhoni are the best we have for number 3,4,5 & 7. Only the number 6 spot is up for grabs. Someone with a solid technique should be there. Yuvi/ Raina are ok in Sub-content pitches. Rohit Sharma could be that guy but only after he learns to value his wicket. Not now. So I can think of only M. Tiwary for that spot. Or just hope that Raina or Yuvi improve their technique.

Problems lie in : openers and bowlers. Sehwag and Gambhir have been erratic. I am more disappointed with Gambhir for not showing any efforts to improve his technique despite constant failures. We might try Rahane or Jaffer to open with Sehwag. Vijay needs to improve defensive skills. And drop Gambhir for a while.

In bowling, sadly fasters are injured and spinners are not good enough. Thats worrying. Yadav and Zaheer are still best if fit. Ashwin, Ojha or Bhajji are just so easy to tackle with. They can't pose any threat. Sad but true!

Posted by roversgate on (February 9, 2013, 21:50 GMT)

While I do think Gambhir needs to be replaced, I think giving him a last chance against Aus should be an option because he did well in the last tour of SA and that is what awaits. Also, Jaffer is the wrong choice, pick Rahane instead, he has been an opener in the past and I am sure he will take the opportunity. If VVS can start as an opener and then fall into the middle order, Rahane can do the same.

My playing XI: (1) Gambhir (2) Rahane (3) Pujara (4) Tendulkar (5) Kohli (6) Sehwag (7) Dhoni (8) Ashwin (9) I. Sharma (10) Sreesanth (11) Ojha

Only because B. Kumar and S. Ahmed are not ready for tests at home yet.

Posted by mvkk on (February 9, 2013, 21:49 GMT)

Are you kidding me? Jaffer? He is almost 35years old and what are the selectors thinking to achieve? A similar issue was tackled by England when they had to fill in their No.3 Slot, they went for Trott instead of Mark Ramprakash. You always should look for the future.

Posted by binu.emiliya on (February 9, 2013, 21:48 GMT)

This will be my test eleven i don't know what ne selectors think

Shewag,Gambheer/Jaffar/M Vijay,Pujara,Sachin,Kohli,Dhoni,Jadeja,B Kumar, Aswin,Ohja,Shammi/Sreeshanth Res:Raina,Rahane,Amith Mishra,Ishanth

Posted by   on (February 9, 2013, 21:43 GMT)

definitely gambhir needed a whack, time to test Jaffer or Vijay. why not play with rahane at no. 6 instead of raina/yuvi/jadeja or they can bring vijay/rahane at 3 & push tendulkar at 5 & kohli at 6.

Posted by ThemanID on (February 9, 2013, 21:37 GMT)

Remove gambhir, sehwag permanently from the team. Change the bowling completely, new spinners and pacemen. Drop dhoni for sometime

Posted by bumsonseats on (February 9, 2013, 21:33 GMT)

both teams could not bat themselves out of a paper bag. i guess 2 - 2 would be my guess the ozzies fast bowlers will keep the indian batters in check, thats if they can last the pace as chocolate fireguards come into mind when they are bowling. with the ozzie batters struggling against the indian spinners even as shown on bowler friendly spinning wickets they still struggle but as its aus they will take i guess scores of 200 will be the norn and over inside 3 days.with the bcci not bothered by gate revenues as they have plenty of dosh.

THE TEAM BATTING ORDER : Wasim Jaffer Cheteshwar Pujara Jalaj Saxena Virat Kohli Sachin Tendulkar Virender Sehwag M.S.Dhoni Amit Mishra Bhuvneshwar Kumar Ishant Sharma Sreesanth Bowling Order: Ishant Sharma Sreesanth Bhuvneshwar Amit Mishra Jalaj Saxena

Sreesanth should be selected...

Posted by keecha on (February 9, 2013, 20:08 GMT)

An unemotional analysis of the failed home tour against England will highlight 2 things. 1) Failure to get solid start from openers (except 1st match which India won) 2) Failure to get early wickets (except first match which again India won). These 2 are critical areas which create a knock on effect. Having a solid start gives middle order to play positively against spin (than getting into defensive mode and letting Swan and Monty appear lethal). And getting early wickets would make it easier for spinners to attack (than being drained out after having conceded about 200 runs to the openers alone). If India is to win the Australia series they need to address both concerns. 1) Need strong and solid openers and 2) Fast bowlers who can strike early. That has been India's blue print for success in the past which was recently highjacked by England and hence the reversal in results.

Posted by   on (February 9, 2013, 20:01 GMT)

The selectors should try to look at the possibility of having Sehwag at #6 ( a position he wants) and have Jaffer and Gambhir open. This can be a make or break series for Gambhir - Understand he was one of the few batters who played well in our last SA tour, so if he has a good series against the Aussies, he will be an important player in South Africa. Selectors need to have some vision. If Sehwag clicks at #6 , great - he deserves that chance. Jaffer on the other hand can play in the international level for 3 years at least , he is a massive player and cannot be ignored anymore. But then , this brilliant scenario is very unlikely. We would see Raina get the #6 position, play well in the subcontinent and most likely be average overseas.

Posted by Vivek_Singh3089 on (February 9, 2013, 19:48 GMT)

In domestic Jaffer does seems to be a good batsman, but one must not forget that he's already 36 & if he's used as an opener then it will only be a stop-gap plan.....already Tendulkar is on the verge of retirement so I guess chances should be given to youngsters who are eager enough to make their mark...Jiwanjot & Akshath Reddy are two young openers with good technique & decent performances....even Rahane can be a good bet for the opening slot..he is already been tried as an opener in ODI's & T20's & can be uesd in tests also....selectors need to take some bold decisions & drop Gambhir-Sehwag pair....allow the youngsters to settle down...IMO the test team should be Rahane, Jiwanjot, Pujara, Tendulkar, Kohli, Rayudu, Dhoni (c & wk), Ashwin, Pandey, Awana, Ojha. with Bhuvi, Shami, Tiwary , Jadeja in reserves.

Posted by amit1807kuwait on (February 9, 2013, 19:47 GMT)

Jaffer?! No offense to all the achievements of Wasim in domestic cricket, but why look backwards? Why not blood youngsters? I am sure we can find enough young players with a fire in their belly. Such a player need not be an opener - remember Ganguly's inspired decision to make Sehwag open in test matches? Come on guys (I mean Dhoni and Co, and the selectors), lets think out of the box. Throw some greenhorns in the deep end of the pool, and lets see if they can swim!!

Posted by GoofyJerryTom on (February 9, 2013, 19:41 GMT)

@bluefunk although Rohit Sharma has not yet played any Tests, he hasn't even been able to perform consistently in other formats. After almost five years he is still not a regular in the ODIs. He did not do anything great during this Ranji season and in the ongoing Irani trophy match which would have bolstered his chances, he played 11 balls, lost his patience and pooped (it can only be called this considering the horrible slog he played)...out o? So how much confidence does he inspire? Everyone including me who has been supporting him and hoping that he delivers is getting a little wary of his God given "talent"

Posted by smartrah on (February 9, 2013, 19:38 GMT)

Seconding @RKC, please pick any squad but do not pick Rohit Sharma. Anyone who saw him get out in the Irani cup tie (slogging to get off the mark) can't be insane enough to pick him.

Posted by bluefunk on (February 9, 2013, 19:28 GMT)

All those talking against Rohit Sharma need to remember that he hasn't yet played a single Test match. And he is primarily a longer format batsman. He is India's best bet for a long term No. 4 in Tests.

Others: Raina, Ojha, Rohit Sharma

Gambhir - Mr . Out of form Sehwag - Mr. Explosive (Now explosives are mixed up with water) Kohli - Mr. Consistent (not a contestant for consistent ) Dhoni - Mr. Cool ( Dont know how he can laugh after losing all these matches) Raina - Mr.Aggressive (Please some one tell me the definition of aggressiveness. Aswin - Mr. Variety (Batsman trying various successful shots while he bowls) Zaheer - Mr. Express (130 kph - thats his maximum speed . Even kumble bowls @ 135 kph)

Posted by Al_Bundy1 on (February 9, 2013, 18:46 GMT)

2 back to back white washes, 1 series loss at home, still no change!! This is insane!! If you keep doing the same thing, you will get the same (not different) results. If Indian Selectors can't bring any changes, maybe it's time to change them?? They can begin by getting rid of 3 biggest non-performers - Tendulkar, Sehwag, and Gambhir. No Indian Selector will dare to drop Tendulkar, but they can drop Gambhir and Sehwag. Replace them with Jaffer and Dhawan as test openers.

I think this squad is enough to beat the MEDIOCRE Aussies. They are not the Aussie team of the past. No quality players in their ranks besides Pup Clarke. So, I strongly believe India have the players to win a test series at home. However, what worries me as always is the bowling department. We need to take 20 wickets in this slow and slugging format of cricket. Do we have the bowlers to do that ? Yes, I know the Aussie batting is below average than normal but still all the flat pitches in India can neutralize even the most deadliest of bowling attacks. The fact is the Indian bowling attack is no where close to being a deadly one.

Posted by allysvalley on (February 9, 2013, 18:12 GMT)

I think more than anything else a season of county cricket could do a world of good for players like gambhir, raina, rohit, ishant, shreeshant,rp singh

Posted by wolf777 on (February 9, 2013, 18:06 GMT)

'Ravindra Jadeja could make way for Suresh Raina or Rohit Sharma'? Lol…What is this fetish with the sixth batsman? It is ridiculous. Drop an allrounder for guys like Rohit Sharma and Suresh Raina? Nohit is hit only in nets and Suresh Raina cannot play short balls. Teams that pick only four bowlers, usually have an allrounder to share the bowling load. Without the fifth bowling option, often India's bowling attack gets tired once a long partnership is formed and then the opposition just runs up the score. Even when bowlers take early wickets, often the opposition is allowed to escape to safety as tiring bowlers cannot mop up the tail.

Posted by   on (February 9, 2013, 17:58 GMT)

If I were the captain, i would well go with three seamers 1.Zaheer Khan 2. Umesh Yadav 3. Gamble between Sreesanth and Bhuvaneshwar Kumar, in my opinion playing 2 spinners and 2 pacers will not be sufficient against an extremely dangerous aussie batting line up..Lets wait and see what MSD has in his mind..

Posted by rsurya on (February 9, 2013, 17:52 GMT)

Dhoni's favorite Ishanth sharma, sreesanth, jadeja, piyush chawla will be the future of Indian bowling attack. Worthless. Tired of Dhonism.

Posted by   on (February 9, 2013, 17:51 GMT)

My 11: Rahane, Vijay, Pujara, Sachin, Kohli, Raina, MSD, Harbhajan, Ojha, Ishant, Shreesanth. no way Gambhir , Sehwag should be in the team. Gambhir is a good player but he needs to get his form back, India can't wait and suffer anymore for his form. And Sehwag is a brainless cricekter. And throw Ashwin out too, he is no more a bowler who can take wickets.

Posted by Shuresh29 on (February 9, 2013, 17:47 GMT)

Shewag is good at home pitches. He can attack bowlers & break bowler's mind set. It changes entire series. So give chance to Shewag for 1st two tests. 1st test XI: 1.Shewag 2. Vijay 3. Pujara 4. Tedulkar 5. Kohli 6. Jedeja 7.Dohni 8. Ashwin 9. Harbajhan 10. Bhuwanesh 11.Sreeshanth/ Ishant 12. Ojha 13. Rayudu 14. Rohit 15. Shami

Still Rohit Sharma didnt play a test match. So better to give a chance in test matches. Specialy, in a home series. Test matches are different format. Before landing in South Africa, he should get a chance in home series.

Posted by usernames on (February 9, 2013, 17:41 GMT)

@Uddyalok -- He has to become a better batsman than Rohit, for a start. Go and watch the Irani trophy to see how Tiwary is struggling against mediocre bowling from Jawed Khan and Nayar. Honestly, he isn't a long-term test prospect. I'd give Rohit a go; if he does well, we will have a very decent order in SA, otherwise, we will risk going with the likes of Raina and Yuvraj which would mean a definite shellacking.

Posted by usernames on (February 9, 2013, 17:38 GMT)

I don't think we have a very good chance, to be honest, but I'd use this opportunity to build a good team. I'd let go of Gambhir -- seriously, there is nothing wrong in going back to domestic cricket to find some form -- and have Rahane in his place. He deserves these 4 tests. So, my squad would be: Rahane, Sehwag, Pujara, Tendulkar, Kohli, Rohit, Dhoni, Ashwin, Ojha, Ishant, Shami, Bhuvneshwar, Rohit, Mishra, Vijay, Sreesanth. There's a backup for each of the spots, and Sreesanth only comes into reckoning if Ishant doesn't play. I wouldn't want to go into the first test with a completely green attack, even if it means having Sreesanth back. I don't think a century from Raina should allow him a comeback. He needs to have at least two really good first class seasons before he comes back. He's a very good player but he needs to rack up those scores to justify his place ahead of Rohit. I think Rohit deserves a go in the test series; if he can't score in 4 tests, I don't think he will ever

Posted by TM on (February 9, 2013, 17:36 GMT)

i think the indian team needs a massive overhaul maybe start picking some U19 players like chand and harmeet singh. my squad: 1) Jiwanjot singh 2) rahane 3 Pujara 4)Tendulkar 5)Kohli 6)rohit sharma 7) MSD 8)Ashwin 9)bhuvuneshwar Kumar 10) Ishant ( if fit)/ Shami ahmed 11) pragyan Ojha 12)jadeja 13)Harmeet singh 14)unmukt chand 15)Sreesanth. Of course when umesh returns hell be in the team and people who say rohit is inconsistent and doesn't have the temperament he's never been tested in test matches so it could be the making of him because hes got so much ability

Posted by JosephThomas on (February 9, 2013, 17:35 GMT)

I cant believe that Dhoni could still remain captain of the TEST TEAM. He does not know what is TEST CRICKET. He's good in ODIs & T20s but not TESTs. His failure is unberable in TEST matches, esp as captain... Better we give the job to Gambhir for time being. Kohli is the man for the future but dont rush him into captaincy, esp for TEST cricket right now. Maybe after a year he can do it. Harbhajan should be selected. He should be given a fair run also. He was not allowed to bowl much in the Mumbai Test against England whereas the other 2 spinners got lots of overs to bowl. Ashwin is like Mendis of SriLanka. Everyone has figured out how to play him. Harbhajan & Ojha can do well... My Team - 1. Gambhir(C), 2. Sehwag, 3. Pujara, 4. Sachin, 5. Kohli, 6. Raina, 7. Dinesh Kartik, 8. Harbhajan, 9. Ishant, 10. Sreesanth, 11. Ojha, 12. Mishra, 13. Tiwary, 14. Shami Ahmed... There is no need for a 15th player when you play in India. No other country takes 15 when they play at home.

harbhajan in team? for claiming rahane lbw of an inside edge?for getting out rohit who played a reckless shot? Harbhajan got wickets only because a world class spinner like kumble was on the other end.He is afraid of bowling many overs even in the ipl and domestic matches fearing that he may get hit. Dont give importance to this outdated spinner

Sewag and Gambir should be left out and Vijay , Rahene, or Jafer should be selected.Harbajan should play more domestic to proove his past and lost talent. Instead Piyush, Misra should be considered, These all the main points to be borne in mind while selecting a team against Aus. Instead, they stick horses for the course, they cannot redeem the Indian Team who lost the last 10 Test matches. Hope, the Selectors learned a lesson to do better if not the best.

It is evident from the Team India's recent test performances that it is high time to build a team for future which should be mix of both experience and young blood. In the absence of the pace bowling spear head Zaheer, Ishant shouldn't be given a young chap like Bhuvi or Shami. Sree must be given a chance if the selectors are eyeing at least the SA tour in 2013-14. Ishant may be injured at any time as he is struggling with post-surgery ankle prob and if such is the case in the middle of the series,an experienced hand must be there and Sree is the only one fitting for such a spot. Ashwin should get a last chance for now in the first test and if he proves to be a failure, then he should be replaced by a new face as Ojha can lead the spin dept. Jaffer must also be given a chance considering his experience in the top of the order and current form. Gambhir could be asked to play in the domestic circuit to pick up his form. Give a chance toTiwary or Rahane rather than going back to Raina.

Posted by CaptainKool on (February 9, 2013, 17:02 GMT)

There is no way Chawla should be selected ahead of Bhajji. Even Amit Mishra is better than Chawla. I don't even get the fact that why chawla is in the team? Everone knows there is no one other than Sreesanth who can bowl that deadly fast outswinging delievery. So He should be in the team, at least in test matches. Ashwin can be dropped if he doesn't perform in first two test matches. Lately he is trying so many variations and it is not working for him. Selectors should remember the performance of Bhajji against Australia.

Sreesanth and Bhajji deserve to be in the test team squad. We need genuine fast bowler and spinner and both of them can provide that. Where is Praveen Kumar though?

Posted by vigneshvinu on (February 9, 2013, 16:50 GMT)

i think the team which has played against england will be retained, but harbhajan should not be included,he struggled to take wickets against domestic players, then i don't think he will take wickets against quality players like clarke..ishant should not be picked unless he proves his fitness by playing a pratice match.bhuvanesh must be picked because he is the best swing bowler at the moment, especially against clarke who stuggles against inswingers.rayudu should be given a chance for his consistency in scoring. 1.sehwag 2.gambhir 3.pujara 4.sachin 5.kohli 6. dhoni 7.raina 8.jadeja 9. ashwin 10.ojha 11.ishant/sreesanth 12.bhuvanesh 13.ishwar pandey 14.rayudu 15.vijay

M. Vijay is a NOT a test player, let alone an international player. Honestly VIru/ Gauti need to go, does it really matter to that extent that we lose this series if we change the openers.. Ishant Sharma is a baggage on this team, doesnt do anything, barely any wickets, just one spell to Ricky Ponting and he is god, seriously. We lost against england at HOME with the so called strong batting line up.. We have a lot of international commitment coming up, let the youngster go up against some good pacers (siddle, starc, pattinson, etc). My starting Xi:

1. Rahane 2. Dhawan/(someone else maybe not sure) 3. Pujara 4. SRT 5. Kohli 6. Jadeja (who deserves a run in tests) 7. MSD 8. Ashwin 9. Sreesanth 10 Ojha 11. Shami Ahmed/ Ishwar Pandey

This team will probably either lose or draw aganist the aussies, A lot will depend on MSDs captaincy. Play Viru/Gauti/ Ishant we will for sure lose the series and then whe time comes for SA in SA.. we will b less than 50 all out. Selectors need to tough!

Posted by blink182alex on (February 9, 2013, 16:33 GMT)

Please select Suresh Raina, that's two cheap wickets right there. Cant play the short ball, can't play any ball against a decent test attack.

Posted by hariharan_cricinfo on (February 9, 2013, 16:24 GMT)

My Squad would be 1. Sehwag 2. Vijay 3. Pujara 4. Sachin 5. Virat 6. Manoj 7. MSD 8. R Jadeja 9. Ashwin 10. Bhuvi 11. Ishant..... Back Ups are: 12. A Mukund 13. Rayadu 14. Mishra 15. Shami Ahmed

If Sreesanth, Harbhajan and Rohit Sharma get in to the test team, then it would add to the mystery - what selectors think.

Posted by   on (February 9, 2013, 16:21 GMT)

Guys, I am hard fan of cricket. But While comparing with Aus, our guys are not good and well short in bowling and middle order batting.. I am going to pray god that we ll not lose the series with 4-0....

Posted by GoofyJerryTom on (February 9, 2013, 16:19 GMT)

@Mankappan Hu granted that Tendulkar hasn't been in any sensational form (by his standards!) in the last 10 Tests or so, however, Imagine this...Sehwag and Gambhir are both out, the score is something like 30/2, Kohli is also struggling, Pujara is new, Dhoni can hardly handle quality bowling in Tests, there's either Raina or Yuvraj to come in before Dhoni, Aussie bowlers are on such a scenario who would like to see emerging from the dressing room at number 4?

Posted by   on (February 9, 2013, 16:13 GMT)

Rohit Sharma has a chance to replace Ravindra Jadeja? That will be insanity of the worst kind!. Rohit is not cut for international cricket, he doesn't have the temprament. Could play 2 good knocks in a year, he has already done half of his good work for 2013 in that ODI against England. Jadeja on the other hand is a much better all-round package, did very well and consistently as the ODI all-rounder against England, and didn't disgrace himself with the ball during his debut test. He has shown he has the temprament to bat long in the longer format at the domestic level. A no-starter this debate. Raina has had his chances, now Jadeja has to get a run in the side to see whether he can establish himself as the all-rounder in the test side as well.

Posted by Gurram on (February 9, 2013, 16:08 GMT)

Get Michael Clarke out, twice, cheaply, game is India's.

Posted by guru1964 on (February 9, 2013, 16:06 GMT)

The selectors are not likely to experiment much. The Team is likely to be: 1. Sehwag 2. Gambhir 3. Pujara 4. Tendulkar 5.Kohli 6. Dhoni 7. Jadeja 8. Ashwin 9. Ishant Sharma 10. Bhuwaneshwar Kumar 11. Shami Ahmed 12. Ojha 13. Sreesanth 14. Raina 15. Murali Vijay. Since Jadeja is in good bowling form and is a better batsman, he may get a nod before Ojha.

Posted by   on (February 9, 2013, 16:02 GMT)

Jaffer, Rahane, Pujara, Kohli, Rayudu, Raina, Dhoni, Ashwin, Ojha, Bhuvnesh and Shami is my playing 11.

Posted by vak1997 on (February 9, 2013, 16:01 GMT)

Jaffer should be included in the squad. he is in a good form and BCCI should lay down the carpet for the players in form. moreover, Jaffer has already played 31 tests.

the Delhi pair could be given "one final chance" I do n't know from how many years i am reading the same line. Selectors have to to think out of book, neglect the previous record of most successful opening pair of India. Specially Gambhir, man he don't learn from his mistakes, repeats poking the ball outside off stump again & again. Presence of Sehwag is necessary as he takes the attack to the opposition & the type of Australian bowlers are Sehwag if got in touch can murder the bowling attack. My choice of second opener is vastly experienced Wasim Jaffer, he will better than the kid Rahane who needs some more time & Murli vijay who is in a habit losing patience after getting settled. Middle order Raina for such a fabulous form he is in & "Sir" Jadeja for his allround performance in the case Bhajji not selected for the team or not in final 11, 3 spinners should be in final 11. Zaheer will be surely in,Yadav & Pathan(if both fit). Bhuvneshwar Kumar should be in team if not in final 11.

@ what way does SRT inspire confidence....he is as hopeless as the others you have mentioned...

Posted by PraveenGV on (February 9, 2013, 15:48 GMT)

I feel we can give Sehwag and Gambir another chance. They are one of the best opening stand..I do agree they are out of form in the recent times but I strongly feel they will be at their best in the Australia test series. Jadeja's spin will definitely be needed against Australia. His batting got better from what I have seen from the recent odi is just a bit ahead from others for No.6/7 spot. Raina may not get into playing 11 but deserves a place in 14 atleast bcos of his consistancy.. Harbhajan is another player whom I feel need to be selected bcos Ashwin, Ojha and Harbhajan are the 3 best spinners available from the current spinner's in India. Here's my team: Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, Cheteshwar Pujara, Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni (capt & wk), Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin, Harbhajan Singh, Ishant Sharma, S Sreesanth, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Suresh Raina, Pragyan Ojha.

my final squad is as following dhoni viru jaffer pujala sachin kohli jadeja ashwin ojha bhuvi ishant p kumar/shreesant rayudu bhaji

Wasim Jaffer shud be in the Indian team any day...he shud hav replaced Gauti long back after Aus tour.No changes..well,same result expected..the Aussies hav better bowling attack.Hope Jaffer some how makes the cut!!

Posted by Malti65 on (February 9, 2013, 15:41 GMT)

Sehwag and Gambhir have been struggling for far too long. I dont see any harm in giving Wasim Jaffer another go. He may be at the end of his career, but he has been scoring so heavily in the domestic games that if he gets a series, then he is definately likely to do better then Gambhir & Sehwag.

Posted by Apocalypse_EX on (February 9, 2013, 15:40 GMT)

Dinda always had good first-class stats yet he is never chosen in tests. He is only an average list-A player yet is given chances in ODIs. Rahane has superb stats in tests but is made to play in ODIs where he isnt that good, same with Rohit Sharma. Meanwhile, they gave chances to Abhinav Mukund in tests when his great list-A stats should have been rewarded with a place in ODIs. The selection committee are an absolute joke if they dont have the common sense to give the right international format for the player who plays well in the respective domestic format.

Posted by arun_padmanabhan on (February 9, 2013, 15:38 GMT)

Its understandable why the BCCI is reluctant to make radical changes - TANA (There Are No Alternatives). New inclusions to the squad might be Jaffer and a fast bowler (Kumar, Ahmed, Sree, etc.). No fresh talent in spin department . In my opinion no. 6 should be Rahane as he has a decent technique to play the turning old ball and the second new ball. Jaffer/Vijay should replace Sehwag. If only Gautam can improve his off-stump play, he will be a good player for the South Africa series, as he already has experience.

My Team is

Veeru, Gambhir, Pujara, Sachin , Kohli, Raina/Rayudu, Dhoni, Ishanth,Sreeshanth,Bhuvaneswar/Shami Ahmed, Aswin, Oja, Harbajan Rahane

But Zaffer also very good form in Ranji and irani tropy. let see who is in the squad. better to give chance to Rayudu. i think in test is very difficult, but atleast give final eleven chance in ODI and T20. All the best Team India. win test series with 4-0 . Thanks cricinfo for give a chance to post a comment in cricinfo. all the best.

I think Sandeep Patil and hs team of selectors are showing the same lack of guts as the previous board did. They should learn to move on. We are talking of a very competitive sport with a lot of money in it.

Even in the batting department some harsh decisions are long overdue. But it looks like everyone is just interested in passing the buck, thus making the task of the next group of selectors even more deficult.

When Buvaneshwar Kumar was selected for the fist time against Pakistan, immediately he gave a very good performance. The same can be said about Umesh Yadav, Shami Ahmed & Ashok Dinda. Then why do our selectors keep giving us the impression that we do not have any good fast bowlers. I think these boys are very good and if they get good international exposure along with the best guidance at the highest level, then they will definately improve and some of them might go on to become some of the best bowlers in the world. Umesh Yadav, Shami Ahmed & Ashok Dinda have shown that they can bowl consistently at 140 kmph. I think that is good enough.

Very depressing to read this. If there are going to be no changes in spite of repeated failures of e.g. openers and if the same old Rainas and Yuvrajs are going to be tried again and again, if in spite of not doing anything of note, people like Harbhajan are going to be called back, God save us.We have to thank our stars that the Aussies have forced Ponting into retirement and Mike Hussey has gone on his own. Luckily they have a lot of first timers for the India visit. Thats our only chance. Clarke will kill us. I also expect the likes of Warner and Hughes and Khwaja to prosper. I am so tired of watching Sehwag throw his wicket away after a few shots, Gambhir giving catching practice to the slip cordon, Dhoni with no technic for Tests. Imagine people wanting Tendulkar to retire? We could have still had Laxman but he was pushed away. Dravid retired as well. Except for Tendulkar, no one inspires any confidence.

Final 11 Squad should be Viru, GAMBHIR, PUJARA, VIRAT, Ajinkya, Raina, Dhoni, Ashwin, Bhajji, Bhuvneshvar, ishant

Posted by Ranta on (February 9, 2013, 15:09 GMT)

My Team

Sehwag Rahane Pujara SRT Kohli Rayudu : Ahed of Raina, Rohit & Manoj Dhoni (C) Mishra Ahead of Ashwin in 11, On form Ojha (Overlooking Irani Performance so far) Bhuvnesh/Shami ( Due for good show in one day and Domestic performance) Ishant

Rest : Jadeja ( Has done nothing wrong to be thrown out, Can be an option ) Ashwin ( one out of 3 spinners in squad ) Shami/Bhuvnesh ( Who ever is not picked )

After Irani Trophy I Don't think Srisanth is still up to his full potential. Give him few domestic games before putting him in big match. he is getting there. Bhajji is far from threat he was. We want more from him, let him play domestic cricket and get back that edge. Let him take wickets. Raina still is far from test batsman. Having done well here. keep him as option but consider him only after good show in chapions trohy in England. Rohit is his best enemy. Can someone tell him to sort his head out. or he is another Kambli in making. Manoj needs few more maches he looks rusty

I think Squad should be Dhoni(Capt),Gambhir,Vijay,Rahane,Pujara,Raina,Kohli,Sachin,Ashwin,Ohja,Harbhajan,Sreesanth,B.Kumar,Dinda,I.Pandey. Viru and Zaheer is not in form,Yuvi is Limited over player.Raina is dependable than Rohit. We can choose Manoj Tiwary also.

Posted by   on (February 9, 2013, 15:00 GMT)

I don't understand Indian selectors. Do they understand how to do their jobs? Gambhir averages 30 over the last 3 years with zero hundreds. Yet they will give him 'one last chance'. He will score a scratchy 50 and keep his place in the team. Sehwag as well is out of form, I would prefer Rahane and Jaffer to open. Rahane can definitely open better than Sehwag and Gambhir right now, and Jaffer is a run machine. As for the no6 slot, they pick guys like Raina and Yuvraj. These guys average in the low 40s in first class cricket. Then you have guys like Tiwary and Badrinath averaging 60, who aren't even picked for the team. The selectors need to sort themselves out and take some blame for India's form. They pick the wrong players for the team and so the team performs badly.

Posted by   on (February 9, 2013, 14:56 GMT)

So the India captain plays on for the CSK.. even if that means another home series loss. "CAPTAIN COOL" has now survived 2 whitewashes , and one home series loss to middle England.

Mr. Srinivasan & Co. will have to answer history when they are asked why they didnt act when they could have still saved some of pride earned in the past decade. Why indian cricket went from World No.1 to slogging champs in less than 2 years. Remember

Posted by TM on (February 9, 2013, 14:51 GMT)

Raina again? its time for Rohit and rahane to be selected along with jadeja

Posted by GerrardLK on (February 9, 2013, 14:48 GMT)

And when you have players like Bhaji & Sree in a side, India won't be liked by any neutral cricket fan. They're the most indisciplined cricketers to ever witness on a cricketing field.

Posted by anuajm on (February 9, 2013, 14:46 GMT)

After the high of the WC victory in 2011, Indian cricket has gone to the lowest level possible specially in test cricket and lost a lot of real fans. The most appalling fact is the selection process which clearly shows their is no thought process in developing the team or developing test cricket in India. What is the point in having Ranji trophy if the top batsman and bowlers in the Ranji are not eve discussed for team selections. Clearly the level of domestic cricket needs to be improved so that you can trust players who do well in it. If Harbhajan and Sreesanth are back in the reckoning, it clearly states the mess Indian cricket is in. If a century in Irani trophy match against a poor attack can catapult players like Raina and Vijay in the test team who have been inconsistent in the Ranji otherwise, God save Indian cricket. Bhajji - one wrong decision, one rash shot, on tail ender, what a bowling sirjee. Also check his recent record agianst Aus. in India, he will be thrashed.

Posted by GerrardLK on (February 9, 2013, 14:44 GMT)

If Aussies can't beat this minnow side, then they will be considered just above Bangladesh. A true fact!

Posted by anton111 on (February 9, 2013, 14:44 GMT)

Hussey made his test debut at 30 and did very well. Jaffer is not too old to play tests. He is in excellent form and should play ahead of Viru or Gauti

Posted by   on (February 9, 2013, 14:41 GMT)

Another defeat coming up.. a. Raina/ Rohit Sharma for tests b. Captain Cool being made the skipper again! Recipe for disaster!!!

Hail virender sehwag the greatest of the greatest!

Posted by Cricketfan101 on (February 9, 2013, 14:26 GMT)

My Squad Would Be Rahane, Jaffer,Pujara,Tendulkar,Kohli,Jadeja ( his bowling better than bhajjis),Dhoni, Ashwin, Ohja, Ishant, B.Kumar,Ahmed. The next three spots can go to ny one of these Rayudu, Rohit,Raina, Tiwary, Mukund,Vijay,Dhawan as for bowlers Kaul, pandey, nadeem,Awana,Dinda or V.Joshi Maybe even bring Sreesanth back.

Posted by rezmata on (February 9, 2013, 14:22 GMT)

This is what will happen... Viru and Gauti will be selected and Viru will make a on an knofe edge 50 on the presented flat track on a first day and Gauti will play a scratchy 50 off 999 balls and will extend their career by another 20 or so matches.

Posted by indianpunter on (February 9, 2013, 14:21 GMT)

As much as i detest selecting the tried, tested and failed players ( read Raina, Harbhajan and Sreesanth), at the end of the day, India has to field 11 people and therein lies the agony for the indian cricket fan !! Another lashing, this time at the hands of the Aussies, beckon ! I am surprised that there is no mention of SRT at all. The man is 40 and had a miserable series against england. There is self doubt ( in him) and that leads to self preservation. The heady cocktail for an impending disaster.

Posted by   on (February 9, 2013, 14:21 GMT)

So, what does Manoj Tiwary have to do to get over Rohit Sharma ? And for heaven's sake, at least Jadeja can bowl and field ? What can Rohit do ? WHAT IS WRONG WITH THEM ??!
