Fast bowler Umesh Yadav has injured his left hand and will be replaced by Abhimanyu Mithun in India's squad for the last two ODIs against England. Umesh hurt the webbing on his hand while stopping a shot from Jonathan Trott at short fine leg during the last over of England's innings in the third ODI in Mohali. MS Dhoni, the India captain, had confirmed the injury after the match and the BCCI have now announced Mithun as Umesh's replacement.

Though he was expensive in the last two games, Umesh impressed with his pace over the series, and took two wickets in each of the first two matches.

India also have Varun Aaron, the 21-year-old fast bowler, in the ODI squad. Aaron was on the limited-overs leg of India's tour of England as well, but did not get a game. Umesh's injury means he might make an international debut.

Mithun has played four Tests and two ODIs for India but appeared to have fallen out of favour after an ordinary tour of the West Indies.

Well Said Ravi!!!! Players that Dhone Likes : Dhoni likes Players like Jadeja,Raina,Vinaykumar,Munaf Patel,Praveen Kumar,Zaheer,Nehra etcc...He will make them play well even though they dont perform well.. Only Exception is Zaheer who is a good player..Dhoni always looks for an oppurtunity to Praise Jadeja or a Praveen kumar in any Press Meet.... I donno why??Pls help me in this!!!! Players Dhoni doesn't Like : Sehwag,Uthappa, Varun Aaron, Of these players, Sehwag is exceptional talent and Dhoni cant keep him out!! Uthappa and Aaron are out of Dhoni's favor.. as soon as they have 2 failures, you can be sure that they will be out of the team ASAP!!! Behind all this, I like Dhoni though as he is a Match Winner.. :) He needs to be Open Minded Though!!!!!!Cannot be this Partial..Everyone wants to play for the country... hehe

@MihirMapara, South India is not another country, its part of India. When will u realise to think unified and stop complaining about the petty differences. For years, selectors have selected players predominantly from the north and finally a selector comes from the south and people look to put him down since he's from the south.Dude, this is 2011, hope u realise that and be aware of the fact that your comments are read by all.Iam sorry to say that some of our Indians still live in a closed mind set

@SRT_GENIUS - Had to say something negative didn't you? What quota system? Which other pacer is fit and fresh to come into the squad?

Posted by royalg on (October 22, 2011, 0:27 GMT)

wud have preferred to see young abu nachi ahmed bowled vry well in the champions trophy showed lot of promise, has gud pace, swings it away, wat more can u ask, even young pradeep sangawan is starting to show signs of an all rounder,

Posted by   on (October 21, 2011, 23:32 GMT)

Im basing my opinion not so much on domestic cricket but the IPL and Champions league trophy and also the West Indies and England tours . No bowler was hit more in the champions trophy than S Aravind .No bowler seemed to bowl worse in West Indies than Abhimanyu Mithun and except for the second game against England Vinay Kumar has not been deserving . Of the three perhaps the only one that partially can be there is Vinay Kumar . Domestic cricket is a good yardstick for initial selection but once we see how the player performs when exposed to international cricketers then we can seperate the cream from the crud . I have seen Irfan Pathan turn in many a match winning performance for INDIA ,not for Baroda and for him to be just shunned for so many years is terrible .

We are choosing these players for ODIS against England ,not against East Zone I know Vinay Kumar took plenty of wickets in one of the IPL seasons but Irfan also did .Hypocrisy!

There walks in the 3rd God into the Indian Trinity of speed demons....Vinay Kumar, S Aravind and Abhimanyi Mithun....Beware Australia! Here we come!

Many of them here are hyping pathan brothers alot, i agree they can do a decent job, but there are many other indian domestic players are doing a better job than them. I would appreciate the selectors for doing a good job.

Posted by BharathRatna on (October 21, 2011, 20:02 GMT)

Who are all taking about Irfan Pathan and Some others bowlers, can compare domestic matches b/w karnataka bowlers and others, see the statstics first then talk about others. Selectors give the chance to irfan in challengers Trophy, wat happens..?He didn't take didn't take a single wicket in the series. If he taken wickets defintely selectors given chance to irfan instead of Mithun. Then in England's tour Twenty20 warm-up match varun Aaron got the chance to bowl and shares the opening the bowling but he didn't take any wicket if he taken the wickets in tat match definetly he hav chance for ODI's instaed of Vinay,in tat match he taken 3 wickets. And also varun didn't played in any Ranji Super League but he has taken in Ranji Plate group matches.

Posted by   on (October 21, 2011, 19:59 GMT)

Once again the replacement is a South Bowler, i mean this has been the case since Srikanth has become the selector chief. Anytime you see a batsman injured then the replacement will be 70% from South. Look at some recent examples every time there is replacement needed Badri/ Mukund/ Vijay are choosen. Why only these guys.? Why Jaffer was not selected when on England tour, Jaffer has consistently scored at Ranji level and dont forget he has double hundred in SA. Rajasthan bowler Pankaj Singh why was he not selected even when he got 50+ wickets in Ranji season.? What has Mithun done to be selected as replacement, i mean he didnt even played single IPL match, then in recent Duleep trophy took only 4 wickets in a 4 day match. Selection committee needs to change.

Those of you disturbed by the selection of Karnataka Bowlers should really be more informed before comenting on sites such as this one. I mean comprehensive details about players profiles and achivements are just a click away.. I am a big Irfan Pathan fan and would be thrilled if he gets to play for India again but that should only be purely on Merit in terms of solid performance in the domestic circuit. Honestly anybody please enlighten me on what has he done recently to deserve india cap? Karnataka bowlers, all three have been very consistant for not just one season but for two three now.. They are just been rewarded for their consistant perfomance in domestic games and not any regional/state bais. what else should be the yard stick for selection apart from performance?? Please read, analyse and compare before complaining just for the sake of it.. Jai Hind

Posted by monisammy on (October 21, 2011, 19:26 GMT)

I REALLY WONDER WHY MR. PARTHIV PATEL IS THERE IN THE INDIAN SIDE, THAT TOO IN THE PLAYING 11... there are so many players in INDIA who are MUCH MUCH better than this guy and deserve a chance.. eg. uthappa, manish pandey, paul valthathy, saurab tiwari, anirudha, abinav mukund, bisla etc

Posted by   on (October 21, 2011, 18:59 GMT)

Pradeep Sangawan or AN Ahmed shoul include in the team instead of Mithun

Posted by vinayespn on (October 21, 2011, 18:32 GMT)

Very good move.. Its karnataka bowlers read Prasanna, Chandrashekar, Srinath and Kumble who have always bowled their heart out in test matches for India - home or away.. Its only good for team India to believe in another rookie from Karnataka to don the bowling attack.. One doesn't need to turn the ball square or bowl at 150km to take wickets.. Its always the guile and the variety which gets you wickets in test matches.. Kumble and Srinath are best examples.. We need to give opportunities for the likes of Aravind, Vinay or Mthun before commenting on their ability..

Posted by CricNtruth on (October 21, 2011, 18:25 GMT)

@Sujay Venkatesh - You definitely have something against people/players from Karnataka, as it is evident from many of your comments thus far. I would never mind if all 11 players are from a particular region/state if all 11 best of India are from the same state! What matters most is that India play 11 best avaialble at any point of time. It's good that selectors are showing a broader vision, which is good for the game.

Posted by SRT_GENIUS on (October 21, 2011, 18:09 GMT)

Happy to see that quota system interfering even for injury replacements! Though personally I like Vinary Kumar better than Mithun. Vinay Kumar has Vaas like quality. WOuld like to see more of Aaron. Even if he is expensive, he is at the learning stage of his career.

Posted by Precioustar84 on (October 21, 2011, 17:42 GMT)

Ok guys! He could've just been BORN in Jharkhand but family roots from Kerala? I was born in USA but I'm a Gujarati but who cares! Anyways, I might be wrong here but isn't Varun Aaron a fast-bowler? Wouldn't the England players know how to play to fast bowling better then spin?? I mean, even Yadav was taken for runs in the last game.

Posted by Ganchu on (October 21, 2011, 17:38 GMT)

Those who are asking for Thyagi,Nachim and other bowlers pls go through their stat what they have acheived in domestic cricket. They are not up to the ranaji level, inpact these mithun and vinaykumar and aravind taken more wickets than these bowlers and shown lot of maturity.

Posted by   on (October 21, 2011, 17:31 GMT)

vinay kumar is a mediocre bowler…I am sorry I I sound harsh but sometimes have to call a spade a spade he doesnt have pace nor does he natural swing bowler. I would prefer somelike like Irfan pathan or ashish nehra over him .Problem with bowlers like vinay kumar and to some extent is that they are bound to get thrashed on flat wickets. Is there any test team in the world which has a bowler who operates at125 Ks …I rest my case.

Posted by SamRoy on (October 21, 2011, 17:22 GMT)

Why no Abu Nechim? Cause he belongs to the forgotten state of Assam? At least he is both accurate and lively , which can't be said of any other Indian seamer.

Posted by zico123 on (October 21, 2011, 17:10 GMT)

we are all very eager to see Varun Aaron make international debut, hopefully he gets his chane in next ODI and have an impressive, mean, lethal, speedy, accurate spell...10-1-35-4.

Posted by   on (October 21, 2011, 17:04 GMT)

Why dont people look at the players from an Indian point of view ,not from their state point of view .Ive never understood this regional sentiment of people to get happy when players from their state are chosen instead of thinking whats better for India . Im from Mumbai and i coudnt care less if no player from Mumbai was chosen as long as the best Indian players were chosen . I think its ridiculous that Aravind ,Mithun and Vinay Kumar are chosen ,they are just substandard .while players like Irfan Pathan among others are not given chances .this is nothing against whatever state they may be from ,its just that they are not deserving of selection over other cricketers. Theres always been a strong regional bias in the present selection committees picks and the sooner the newer committee comes in .Im sure Kumble or Ganguly or Mohinder would do much better ,they strike me as people interested in Indian and not their own regions players .

Posted by   on (October 21, 2011, 16:20 GMT)

All these boys from Karnataka are in Venkatesh Prasad Mold than Srinath...I dont think a vinay kumar or Arvind or Mithun will make Aussies or Australians Jump...We already have Munaf,PK and Ashish who are all same kind of bowlers

For Windies test I hope it would be PK, Yadav or Aaron and spinners. I would love to see an Attack with Zaheer, Ishant and one of these youngsters from Yadav and Aaron for a series in Australia and SA.

Posted by bigdhonifan on (October 21, 2011, 16:17 GMT)

Sudip Tyagi is not a good performer.... Dhoni given him chances in CSK squad as well in Indian Squad!!!

Posted by bigdhonifan on (October 21, 2011, 16:15 GMT)

Abhimanyu Mithun was the highest wicket taker in Challenger trophy and He was in top form in Ranji trophy... this got him selection... I think Sreesanth was better... is he fit???

Posted by partha132 on (October 21, 2011, 15:45 GMT)

I think we should have slots like 2 right arm mediums, 2 left armers and two express pace and 2-3 spinners in the squad and pick the 11 as per requirement.. Taking a medium pace bowler in place of an express pace doesnt make sense... Variety in the bowler dept is imp when there is not a single champion world class bowler to restrict or bowl opposition out....

Posted by reghuh on (October 21, 2011, 15:23 GMT)

Abhimanyu mithun is a club like bowler similar to aravind and vinay kumar.....vinay kumar is better among the three and he himself is a glorified club bowler who gets wickets in slow dead pitches...............IM surprized that in a subcontinent like india where cricket is like a religeon, there are only these mithuns, vinaykumars, aravinds and rp singhs of the world............ Ishant,Sreesanth,Munaf,Varun Aaron,Umesh are better bets .......... Mithun,Aravind in the team is just like a player(resource) wasted....Instead of them, kohli can bowl........Selectors have gone crazy........as if there is no other bowler in all the ranji teams, they are picking ppl who have same skills/capability

Posted by yenjvoy1 on (October 21, 2011, 15:22 GMT)

The only good thing that can be said about the combined efforts of Mithun, Arvind and Vinay is that they make Venkatesh Prasad and Sreenath seem like Ambrose and Walsh in comparison.

Posted by yenjvoy1 on (October 21, 2011, 15:20 GMT)

Cool. Vinay, Mithun and Arvind, 3 "pace" bowlers from Karnataka in the Indian team, all big strapping lads brought up on a steady diet of curd rice, and not one of them can touch 135 kph on a good day. The English batsmen must be quaking in their boots for fear of the Karnataka pace battery about to be unleashed on them at the breathtaking average speed of 121 kph with impeccable line and length. Never since the storied West Indies pace battery of the 70s has a unit like this been seen, and I hope it is never seen again, for the collective good of Indian cricket as well as of any Indian audience members in one of Andy Zaltzman's stand up routines.

Posted by anilkp on (October 21, 2011, 15:05 GMT)

@Raaj Vinu: That is a great statement for the BCCI/Selection Panel/Cricinfo editor/non-performing bowlers and what-nots, Raaj! Awsome thoughts. By the way, I was wondering if you would mind translating it for the sake of your fellow readers...

Posted by Texmex on (October 21, 2011, 15:01 GMT)

Umesh impressed with his pace. He was consistently around 140-147 better than all English bowlers except perhaps Finn. I hope Varun plays for the next 2. These bowlers should be asked to bowl as fast as possible. It is ok if they go for more runs now as they can improve their accuracy with more experience. Continously they should get chances in the next 2-3 years. Else we will lose them.

Posted by Ravi_kumar_Kinnera on (October 21, 2011, 15:00 GMT)

Hello Dhoni, You only give chances to those whom you like. you give n number of chances to Raina even though he fails to play a shot delivery... You will give n number of chances to Jadeja eventhough he is not at all international standard player. there are many cricketers in india who are better than Jadeja.... Tell me when will you give chance to VARUN ARON? we wanted to see a young bowler who bowls at speeds 145+.... What did you see in Vinay kumar? He is not at all a bowler in international standard... He has been sitting in dressing romm from quite a long time....

Posted by vjndr4u on (October 21, 2011, 13:48 GMT)

So finally the time has come for varun. He is a damn good fast bowler. He is the fastest indian bowler at the moment his fastest delivery in domestic cricket is 153 kph. Also his line n length is much better than Umesh Yadav. I think Umesh Yadav & Varun Aaron will be a deadly combo for indian team in future. Mithun is also a good bowler he too got some good pace around 140 kph and he also can bat. He is a very good hitter of cricket ball. I think team management should try atleast two bowlers out of Varun , Umesh & Mithun in every match vs West Indies...... Let them grow in confidence they could be the future of indian team.

Posted by   on (October 21, 2011, 13:40 GMT)

Why is it always regional bias when it comes to players from the south.......there have been so many from mumbai , delhi and punjab ......y don't u say its bias there? @AbAdvani.......he is not in either team because he is not CONSISTENT!!!

Posted by noorenasir on (October 21, 2011, 13:40 GMT)

You are giving chances to bowlers like umesh yadav has abid nabi done any mistake that he is not been taken in the squad.

Posted by virufan1 on (October 21, 2011, 13:29 GMT)

Visionless choice by gutless selectors to prefer trundlers over pacers.

Posted by   on (October 21, 2011, 13:28 GMT)

Mithun to replace Injured Umesh Yadav in the Indian Team. Proud of you Karanataka boys. Now We have 4 Players from Karnataka with Robin in T20 team. With Manish Pandey and Gowtham waiting in wings we expect more Way to go Boys Keep it up

Posted by jam-11 on (October 21, 2011, 13:10 GMT)

anand krishna comments is worst i saw in my life. he compare mithun and vinay club level bowler, those two are top two wicket takers in last ranaji season. according to him indian batsmen also club level batsmen who got out of these two bowlers.atleast give respect to ranaji performer.

Posted by CricketLife.net on (October 21, 2011, 13:06 GMT)

This means that Varun aaron could get a game now. hopefully.

Posted by   on (October 21, 2011, 12:17 GMT)

cool . arvind , mithun and vinay kumar. 3 pace bowlers from karnataka in india squad

Posted by AbAdvani on (October 21, 2011, 12:01 GMT)

Where is Sudip Tyagi ? He was impressive in pace (140+) and could also swing in Indian conditions in IPL -not to be seen in the CSK squad also ?

Posted by   on (October 21, 2011, 12:00 GMT)

instead of mithun ,Sudeep Tyagi should have been sellected.Sudeep Tyagi and Varun Aaron could have been a good bowling combo. But now it is a karnataka bowling trio in the picture bowlers like mithun arvind and vinay kumar are waste bowlers.Karnataka are producing the worst bowlers ever now.In 90s they were good Karnataka bowlers.Mithun vinay kumar and arvind will only spoil the name.

Posted by   on (October 21, 2011, 11:54 GMT)

Dohni please give varun a chance he can generate more speed then umesh i.e 147 to 151kmph needs to concentrate on his line and length and can also generate a good yorker, bouncer.mithun is same as vinay.k i think varun should be given a chance.

Posted by   on (October 21, 2011, 11:36 GMT)

Have the sinking feeling in my stomach. I think we're going to see Mithun, yet again. Don't think of him or vinay Kumar as anything but a club level bowler.

Posted by satish619chandar on (October 21, 2011, 11:26 GMT)

I would have preferred Sangwan or Abu Nechim instead of Mithun.. Mithun and Aravind need heavy coaching.. They are very vunerable under pressure as we saw in IPL and CLT20.. Sangwan is a good bowler and he certainly need to be looked upon as the next leftie rather than Aravind.. Anyway, i expect Varun Aaron to play next match.. Hope so too..

Posted by satish619chandar on (October 21, 2011, 11:23 GMT)

@ultimatewarrior - Went for hiding.. They ll be back when we start to lose..

Posted by   on (October 21, 2011, 11:08 GMT)

Pradeep Sangawan or AN Ahmed shoul include in the team instead of Mithun

Posted by   on (October 21, 2011, 10:16 GMT)

Damn you selectors why dont give Varun Aaron a chance he is waiting for ages, India have already won this series its best time to gove this kid a chance so he can play his own game under no real pressure.

Posted by   on (October 21, 2011, 10:14 GMT)

Posted by Stier on (October 21, 2011, 10:06 GMT)

Since when did Varun Aaron become a Kerala Fast Bowler. Last I knew he was from Bihar and plays for Jharkhand

Posted by Raman.UV on (October 21, 2011, 9:32 GMT)

Umesh got some extra pace and it will help us in seaming conditions like Australia and England but for him its necessary to maintain his fitness level. He can be a good prospect for Indian Fast bowlering unit along with zaheer, Ashish PK Ishant and Munaf. India must try varun to check his ability. I dint think guys like VK Aravind or Mithun have good variation n pace to take wickets consistently again good opposition overseas.

Posted by pvwadekar on (October 21, 2011, 9:19 GMT)

why Abhimanyu Mithun ??? .. he is in the same category as R. Vinay Kumar, an over-rated domestic bowler.

Posted by Haleos on (October 21, 2011, 9:05 GMT)

Hope they play Varun this time. What is the point if he just warms the bench.

Posted by ravi_shankar88 on (October 21, 2011, 8:45 GMT)

Now,umesh please don't drop your pace and become another munaf or r.p.singh or irfan.... pls work more on your fitness and increase more pace.hope you will return to the team in west indies matches.now i think aaron deserves a chance.

Btw another good selecton by selectors to bring in young mithun and going not going back to r.p or nehra.

Posted by   on (October 21, 2011, 8:31 GMT)

why the selectors not think about all rounders. In team already fast bowlers, again one more fast bowler even replace of umesh why not an all rounder, so many option but they not thinking about that??????????

Posted by Naresh28 on (October 21, 2011, 8:29 GMT)

Yes it would be good to let Varun loose. Mithun is also one that has potential. I feel Dhoni and Raina need a break in the next two games now that the series is sealed. It would be good opportunity to experiment.Gambhir could catain the next matches.

Posted by jmcilhinney on (October 21, 2011, 8:27 GMT)

That's a shame. He copped a bit of stick this last game but has generally looked good. Surely now they'll play Varun Aaron. If so he will be under a lot of pressure after all the speculation. I hope he does well but, as an England fan, not too well.

Posted by PiyushD on (October 21, 2011, 8:24 GMT)

May be now we will see Aron in an International, I will be disappointed if Mithun gets to play and Varun is again ignored.

Posted by   on (October 21, 2011, 7:58 GMT)

What did Mithun show, after the West Indies tour and now, to merit this selection? With his inclusion, now we have three pacers from Karnataka --none of the other Ranji teams do not have any worthwhile pacers to be tried out? Amazing!

Posted by ultimatewarrior on (October 21, 2011, 7:56 GMT)

Where are those Indian Fans gone who were blaming IPL for the India loosing matches in England, Dhoni/Virat/Raina are playing non stop even after England tour in Champions League and still scoring briskly.........

Varun aaron must be given a go in this series just to have a look at what he brings to the table.. Re the series it is another match and another hammering for sorry England team... Were a bit arrogant in Eng and have been brought down to ground by india here..

Aaron from Kerala? He is from Jharkhand.Big Mistake in the Article. And just one test in West Indies qualify as an ordinary series for Mithun? That said I would like Aaron to play ahead of Mithun.
