England in India ODI Series - 1st ODI

India v England

India won by 126 runs

Bresnan to bowl the first ball. Here we go. The grudge series. You can read about it and listen to it, but can't see anything. For now. Walking into the darkness ... Parthiv faces.

We still have no live pictures! The game starts in five ...

Benny will make a tough paymaster. "What is Aaron doing in the squad? If he's just there to carry water bottles, I think he shouldn't be paid," he says. Bipul chimes in with some sarcasm: "How can you say Ashwin is the lone spinner, what about Vinay Kumar?"

"Vinay Kumar? Again? Seriously?" That's nothing, Jayesh - the shocking part is that Vinay says he is now a senior member in the side and will be guiding the youngsters. Strange times.

Kidger again: "Nitin, I'd love to think that India will be just as weak as last summer (only 4 specialist bowlers and one spinner? Maybe you have a point!) Any England fan would take a series win, even if only 3-2, but probably most fans would settle for being competitive in the series and seeing some of the young players make a real case for themselves." Same here.

The early news from Hyderabad is that Ian Bell is not playing. Stay tuned for more. India win the toss and elect to bat. India are playing three seamers and R Ashwin is the lone specialist spinner. There seems to be some broadcast issue at play, we haven't seen any live pictures yet, but the toss is done and dusted.

India XI: Gambhir, Parthiv, Rahane, Kohli, Dhoni, Raina, Jadeja, Ashwin, Praveen, Vinay, Umesh Yadav

I am only 99.99% sure, but this is the England XI: Cook, Kieswetter, Trott, KP, Bopara, Bairstow, Patel, Bresnan, Swann, Finn and Dernbach

Mark Kidger, as always, slips in the first comment of the day. "Everything suggests that a young England side are going to find life a lot tougher in this series than it was last summer. Indian fans will prefer not to remember that they have lost their last two ODI series in England and will expect to win comfortably. Everything is going to depend on how well the England young guns adapt and how much the experienced hands in the England side can deliver," he says. But Mark, India have a more popgun attack than they had in the England ODIs. I wonder how much the batsmen will have to make for the likes of Vinay Kumar, Aaron and co. to be able to defend it. Praveen Kumar won't be the swing-meister he was in England, either.

1.50 pm A warm welcome to what's being billed as the 'Payback Series'. Anyone remember the movie Payback that came way back in 1999? It starred Mel Gibson, and a lot was expected of it, but it was a bit of a damp squib. Like the Indian team was in England. Can they change things around, with a side that's still as depleted as it was in that disaster tour? Toss in Hyderabad in 10 minutes.

While we wait for toss and team details, do pop across to our Facebook page. You will 'Like' the content on our Wall, irrespective of whether you are a Rahul Dravid fan. Or if twitter is what works for you, then do follow us @espncricinfo.

0.1

Bresnan to Patel, no run, very wide of off stump, Parthiv doesn't play at it.

0.2

Bresnan to Patel, 1 run, worked off the body to fine leg. India are away, Parthiv is away.

0.3

Bresnan to Rahane, no run, turned to the on side where Samit Patel fields.

0.4

Bresnan to Rahane, 2 wides, down the leg side, the batsman looks to flick but it sails past the keeper and down to fine leg for runs. Apparently went off the pads.

0.4

Bresnan to Patel, no run

0.5

Bresnan to Patel, 1 run, Parthiv plays it into the left of the covers for one more.

Would you believe me if I said a spaceship just landed midpitch? You would have to, since you can't see any pictures. Haha

Finn takes the second new ball. Runs in to Patel.

1.1

Finn to Patel, 2 wides, and he whangs the first one down the leg side. Kieswetter parries it over to fine leg. More wides.

1.1

Finn to Rahane, no run, outside Rahane's off stump, good carry for Finn and he thuds it into Kieswetter's gloves.

1.2

Finn to Rahane, no run, edged and dropped by Trott. It was a clean edge from Rahane, straight forward loopy take for Trott at slip, who kept waiting for it and then spilled a dolly.

1.3

Finn to Rahane, 2 runs, angled into the body, and Rahane opens his account after being dropped. A couple to midwicket.

1.4

Finn to Rahane, no run, Bopara over-rusn a straightforward save in the covers, but no run conceded.

"Good time for Shahid Afridi to allege that he saw Indians running on horses between the wickets," says Denzil Correa. Ha!

1.5

Finn to Rahane, no run, 91.6 mph on the speed gun, we hear, and it is played straight to mid-off.

1.6

Finn to Rahane, no run, Rahane is forward and mistimes the push to mid-on to end a bustling first over from Finn. He was so pacy that we couldn't see the ball. Or something like that.

2.1

Bresnan to Patel, no run, Parthiv lets one go through to the keeper.

Plenty of empty seats in the stands. They are watching it on TV back home?

2.2

Bresnan to Patel, 1 run

2.3

Bresnan to Rahane, 1 run, clipped crisply off the pads through midwicket, as Bresnan drifts into the pads again.

2.4

Bresnan to Patel, 1 wide, very wide outside off. I guess Bresnan, like us, can't see the stumps. Another extra.

2.4

Bresnan to Patel, FOUR, clipped away. Over-pitched on Parthiv's toes and he flicks it away, I am sure with a big flourish too. Four through the leg side.

2.5

Bresnan to Patel, no run, plays this one into the covers with a defensive push.

We have live pictures! The dark ages are past us. So help us, God.

2.6

Bresnan to Patel, 1 run, short ball, Parthiv is on the hop and gets the ball down to third man.

3.1

Finn to Patel, 1 run, Parthiv opens the face and steers a length ball backward of point for a single.

No signs of that spaceship now. Looks like it has done the skedaddle.

3.2

Finn to Rahane, no run, full ball outside the off stump, Rahane pushes forward and check-drives to mid-off.

Two slips for Rahane.

3.3

Finn to Rahane, no run, back of a length this time outside off, Rahane guides it to point.

3.4

Finn to Rahane, no run, fuller and straight, Rahane nudges to the leg side cautiously.

That edge in the 2nd over seemed to die on Trott at first slip, but no excuse really as he tumbled to his right.

3.5

Finn to Rahane, OUT, Parthiv is in big trouble. Run out at the non-striker's end, backing up too far. It was overpitched in Rahane's zone and he played the perfect straight check drive. Finn, on his follow through, tried to stop it with the right hand and ended up helping it along to the stumps. Parthiv was not even in the picture.

Gambhir, on his birthday, is in at No. 3. What does this man have to do to open the innings? He doesn't get to open when Sachin and Sehwag play. He doesn't get to open even when they aren't playing.

3.6

Finn to Rahane, no run, full again on Rahane's pads and he clips it sweetly, but straight to square leg.

End of over 4 (1 run) India 17/1 (RR: 4.25)

4.1

Bresnan to Gambhir, no run, back of a length around the off stump, Gambhir stays in the crease and defends.

4.2

Bresnan to Gambhir, 1 run, Gambhir walks down the track and looks to cut on the move as the short ball angles away. He can't piece the field, but gets a single.

Chris: ""Parthiv was not even in the picture". Aha, I see what you did there, very good." Hilarious!

4.3

Bresnan to Rahane, no run, already a big change from the lengths Bresnan was hitting back home. He's bowling really full to Rahane here. This time, Rahane on-drives to mid-on.

4.4

Bresnan to Rahane, 1 run, back of a length this time, shaping into Rahane who works it off the hips down to fine leg for a single.

4.5

Bresnan to Gambhir, no run, full to Gambhir now, at 135 kph, and he quietly defends to the off side with soft hands.

4.6

Bresnan to Gambhir, no run, a hint of inward movement into Gambhir, who check drives to mid-off to end the over.

End of over 5 (2 runs) India 19/1 (RR: 3.80)

5.1

Finn to Rahane, no run, Rahane stays pinned on the back foot as he waits for a pacy length ball to come beside him before dropping it to the off side.

5.2

Finn to Rahane, no run, yorker attempted on off stump, Rahane dead-bats it down the track.

5.3

Finn to Rahane, no run, 144 kph and back of a length. Finn's beanpole angle allows him to get that ball to jump up and hit the glove as Rahane plays forward. It pops up in front of him, but doesn't carry back to the bowler.

5.4

Finn to Rahane, 2 runs, Rahane gets some width and leans into a good-looking square drive, on the up, away from the body, but fully in control as he used the wrists. The ball slows up in the outfield and they get three. Ouch. Short run. Only two given.

5.5

Finn to Gambhir, FOUR, Gambhir at his best. This wasn't too full, it just sat up from a length and Gambhir just eases it through the line and threads the covers.

5.6

Finn to Gambhir, no run, Finn shortens the length and angles it across Gambhir who dabs it from the crease towards point.

End of over 6 (6 runs) India 25/1 (RR: 4.16)

6.1

Bresnan to Rahane, 1 wide, pushed down the leg side, Kieswetter tumbles, collects and appeals, and the umpire responds by spreading his arms.

6.1

Bresnan to Rahane, 1 wide, is this pitch on its way to dusty death already? This one keeps low as it angles down the leg side again. Just as well, Rahane was on the back foot and would have been plumb if it had been straight. He was in no position to get bat on it.

6.1

Bresnan to Rahane, 1 run, fuller length, Rahane carefully turns it around to square leg.

Short cover in for Gambhir. Already signs of a sluggish pitch.

6.2

Bresnan to Gambhir, no run, full ball, tempting Gambhir to drive into the covers, and he consciously keeps it down.

6.3

Bresnan to Gambhir, no run, Gambhir invokes his inner Ganguly as he dances down the crease while making room, and looks to carve into the off side. Play and a miss.

6.4

Bresnan to Gambhir, no run, fuller and wider outside off, Gambhir opens the face and chops it to point.

6.5

Bresnan to Gambhir, no run, driving length on middle and off, Gambhir drives it back to the bowler.

6.6

Bresnan to Gambhir, FOUR, that's far too wide outside off. Gambhir did well to actually time the shot as it arrived with spongy bounce well outside the hitting area. He hops and stretches to get the cut away and it barely makes the ropes.

End of over 7 (7 runs) India 32/1 (RR: 4.57)

Finn to Rahane, no run, Rahane stays defensive. Full ball on off, blocked into the off side.

7.2

Finn to Rahane, 1 run, shorter length, Rahane opens the bat face and guides it behind point for a single.

7.3

Finn to Gambhir, no run, touch of width to Gambhir, who steers to point and for a quick single. Not to be had.

7.4

Finn to Gambhir, FOUR, Gambhir jumps out once again, and throws the bat at a full toss outside off. He beats point easy, but third man (KP I think) makes a great effort to get there, before letting it go through the legs.

7.5

Finn to Gambhir, 1 run, gets the single this time, typical Gambhir tap off the back foot behind point, and Rahane responds.

One slip for Rahane now.

7.6

Finn to Rahane, no run, length ball on middle and leg, turned away cautiously to the leg side.

Dernbach into the attack now.

8.1

Dernbach to Gambhir, 1 run, Gambhir looks to lash a full ball over the leg side, and gets a leading edge that dribbles away safely behind point on the off side. The birthday boy is having a bash or two.

8.2

Dernbach to Rahane, no run, short and pacy outside off, Rahane tries to cut but is beated by the quickness.

8.3

Dernbach to Rahane, no run, fuller on off stump, Rahane gets forward early this time but doesn't drive with conviction.

8.4

Dernbach to Rahane, no run, that ducked into Rahane off the seam, he was clearly surprised as he looked to cut expansively. Good ball, that, from Dernbach.

8.5

Dernbach to Rahane, no run, looks to crack it square this time, without getting the foot across. The timing eludes him and the ball goes straight to cover.

8.6

Dernbach to Rahane, 1 wide, needlessly attempts a back of the hand slower ball now, and he loses the line. It rolls through to a diving Kieswetter, well outside off.

8.6

Dernbach to Rahane, 1 run, Rahane guides the last ball to backward point.

9.1

Finn to Rahane, no run, full ball outside Rahane's off stump, he again seems to be picking the line and length late, leaving him without enough time to play a forceful shot.

9.2

Finn to Rahane, 1 wide, Finn bustles down the leg side again, and it is the 7th wide ball of the innings.

9.2

Finn to Rahane, 1 run, pitched up outside off, Rahane pushes into the covers and scampers across. Cover and point both run in, but neither manages to pick it up cleanly.

9.3

Finn to Gambhir, 1 run, Gambhir steers a ball angled across him down to third man for a single.

9.4

Finn to Rahane, 1 run, better shot from Rahane, sets himself up for the whip early and eases it to midwicket.

9.5

Finn to Gambhir, 1 run, Gambhir leaps out to a wide ball, and ends up yorking himself. He digs it out to mid-off and keeps running for the single.

9.6

Finn to Rahane, 1 run, Rahane opens the face and angles a ball outside off down to third man for a single.

10.1

Dernbach to Rahane, no run, full ball swerving into the pads, Rahane works it to the leg side, again without intent to score. I am reminded of Rahul Dravid's horror first couple of seasons in ODI cricket.

10.2

Dernbach to Rahane, no run, short and wide outside off, it keeps low as it drifts past Rahane's limp attempt to guide it to point.

10.3

Dernbach to Rahane, no run, gets forward well and early this time, guides the full ball into the covers.

10.4

Dernbach to Rahane, 1 run, Dernbach's back of the hand slower ball again, slips out and is a full toss outside off. Rahane slaps it to the leg side without timing, he was clearly surprised by it. Gets the single, though.

10.5

Dernbach to Gambhir, 1 run, swerving across from Gambhir's middle to off stump, he flicks firmly wide of midwicket for a single.

10.6

Dernbach to Rahane, 1 run, fast delivery back of a length outside off, Rahane guides it late to third man for a single.

Swann gets the ball now. Note, this is not a Powerplay. The Powerplays can only be taken from over 16 to 36.

11.1

Swann to Rahane, no run, curls in from outside off, Rahane steps back and forces it back down the track.

11.2

Swann to Rahane, 1 run, more flight this time, Rahane gets forward and works with the turn to long-on for a single.

One slip for Gambhir. Round the stumps.

11.3

Swann to Gambhir, 1 run, turns away sharply from Gambhir, who waits and forces it square with the turn for a single.

11.4

Swann to Rahane, OUT, Rahane will want to forget this innings as soon as possible. Swann again strikes in his first over. Rahane's worked himself into a shotless corner, and suddenly tries to break free against spin. He tries to step out to Swann and loft through the off side, but Swann's canny drift takes the ball away before it dips and breaks in, easily beating the shot. Kieswetter completes an easy stumping.

Unfortunately for Rahane, most of that innings is on video evidence now. Unlike the first few overs. Very poor effort. Kohli is the new man in.

Slip in.

11.5

12.3

Dernbach to Kohli, no run, that curved in sharply in the air, Kohli was forward and pushing to the off side and keeps it out.

12.4

Bowling powerplay taken now. Bresnan comes on. Just to bring you up to speed - here are the new rules.

16.1

Bresnan to Kohli, 1 run, length ball angled into Kohli, who works it off the hips for a single.

Four men in the off side saving a single, sweeper cover is back as is third man. The other man back is on the leg side, I reckon.

16.2

Bresnan to Gambhir, 1 run, angled well outside Gambhir's off stump and he dabs it down to third man for one.

16.3

Bresnan to Kohli, 1 run, Kohli whips it from well outside off towards midwicket. Looking quite wristy today, is Kohli.

16.4

Bresnan to Gambhir, 2 runs, Gambhir does the Ganguly routine again, he leaps out and cracks a wide ball up and over point. He doesn't time it, though, and sweeper covers comes around to field it. The man from the deep yorks the keeper with a horror throw and they get a second. And then next throw back is also wide.

16.5

Bresnan to Gambhir, no run

16.6

Bresnan to Gambhir, no run, Gambhir stays beside the line and guides quietly to point.

End of over 17 (5 runs) India 76/2 (RR: 4.47)

Dernbach is back now.

17.1

Dernbach to Kohli, no run, brings the first one into Kohli, who defends down the track.

17.2

Dernbach to Kohli, 2 runs, shaped into the pads again, this time Kohli works it nicely through square leg and sprints back for two.

Sridhar: "The wayward throws are probably a tactic for scuffing up the ball." Interesting take, that.

17.3

Dernbach to Kohli, 1 run, short ball, Kohli is early on the pull but the ball comes on quicker still. Played without timing to mid-on.

17.4

Dernbach to Gambhir, no run, leading edge, not the first time today for Gambhir. He tries to work a ball that is well outside leg through square and it pops up into the covers, landing just short of the man charging in.

17.5

Dernbach to Gambhir, OUT, the back of the hand slower one does for Gambhir. The full toss is now a genuine wicket-taking delivery! The ball just looped out in slow motion out of Dernbach's fingers, and Gambhir did a double take as he saw it take its time traversing the 22 yards. He tried to slap it away, but missed and was hit on the full just in front of leg stump. Very weird stuff, but I guess that was a good call from umpire Billy.
