England in India ODI Series - 2nd ODI

India v England

India won by 8 wickets (with 80 balls remaining)

Praveen Kumar to open the bowling...slip and a short midwicket in place

The players are making their way out. England looking to take advantage of the opening Powerplay

2.20pm Quite a few India supporters asking why Varun Aaron hasn't had a game yet. Hard to change a team after a big win, the England tour would have been a better place to try him.

"Still no sign of Bell, wonder what English team management thinking," asks Shankar. It's amazing how quickly a players' stature rises when he's not in the side. Bell's ODI record is fairly mediocre.

2.10pm The card suggests Kevin Pietersen will bat at No. 3 again - he's under pressure to perform - and England's middle order will need work out a method to play India's spinners.

"England need to get the batting order right..especially on a slow track like this one," says Kapil. "Trott should be at 3 and Pietersen at 4.. If Kieswetter goes early, Bairstow should be promoted." It's certainly an ongoing debate.

2.00pm India are unchanged, meanwhile England have won the toss and will bat. Can they make the most if it? Interestingly, MS Dhoni says he would have bowled because of the dew at this time of the year. Is that a bluff or local knowledge?

India 1 Parthiv Patel, 2 Ajinkya Rahane, 3 Gautam Gambhir, 4 Virat Kohli, 5 Suresh Raina, 6 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Praveen Kumar, 10 Vinay Kumar, 11 Umesh Yadav

1.55pm Ha, well, so much for Meaker playing. England unchanged. Some early intrigue there. So the preview was right, after all.

England 1 Alastair Cook (capt), 2 Craig Kieswetter (wk), 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Kevin Pietersen, 5 Ravi Bopara, 6 Jonny Bairstow, 7 Samit Patel, 8 Tim Bresnan, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 Steven Finn, 11 Jade Dernbach

1.50pm Early news coming from ground suggests that Stuart Meaker, the Surrey pace bowler, will make his debut today. We'll get confirmation of teams and toss news shortly. Meanwhile, here's a preview to the match (sorry, written by myself. Yep, didn't pick Meaker. Oh well) and some thoughts from Virat Kohli.

1.45pm Welcome to coverage of the second one-day international between India and England from Delhi. The home side were convincing winners in the opening clash and England need to win here to have a realistic chance in the series. If they go 2-0 down it will be too much ground to make up.

One of our local spies has this about conditions. "Temperature in the early 30s, but sun isn't harsh by delhi's standards. Early sunsets these days, again by delhi's standards!" England will be grateful for slightly less heat.

4.2

Kumar to Trott, FOUR, back-to-back boundaries, Praveen loses his line down the leg side and it's neatly flicked down to fine leg

6.5

Kumar to Trott, no run, driven up to the mid-off

7.2

Vinay Kumar to Pietersen, no run, back of a length, sweetly punched to mid-off

7.3

Vinay Kumar to Pietersen, 1 run, pitched up, driven to the right of mid-off without much timing and despite a stretch Pietersen was well home - unlike the opening match

7.4

Vinay Kumar to Trott, FOUR, lovely shot, that's Trott at his best as he leans into a half volley and threads the gap between point and cover

7.5

Vinay Kumar to Trott, no run, now he drives with good timing to mid-off...most things are coming off the middle for Trott so far

7.6

Vinay Kumar to Trott, no run, this wasn't a half volley, he drives on the up but straight to a fairly short point

End of over 8 (7 runs) England 34/2 (RR: 4.25)

MS Dhoni has come up the stumps to stop Pietersen advancing down the pitch

8.1

Kumar to Pietersen, 1 run, driven firmly off the back foot towards mid-off who is deep enough to allow a sharp single

8.2

Kumar to Trott, no run, as there an edge? Trott went for cut and Dhoni couldn't gather. Don't think he touched it

8.3

Kumar to Trott, no run, punched firmly to short cover

8.4

Kumar to Trott, no run, can't take advantage of some width, he went to cut but it came off the bottom edge and rolled towards slip

8.5

Kumar to Trott, no run, takes the bottom hand off the bat as he drives into the covers

8.6

Kumar to Trott, FOUR, clipped away beautifully from around off stump and it whistled through midwicket...barely any effort, all timing

End of over 9 (5 runs) England 39/2 (RR: 4.33)
IJL Trott    26* (32b 5x4)      P Kumar    5-1-26-1
KP Pietersen    8* (13b 1x4)      R Vinay Kumar    4-1-9-1

9.1

Vinay Kumar to Pietersen, 1 run, for this over Dhoni is stood back, so Pietersen can walk across the crease and down the pitch then he flicks to mid-on

9.2

Vinay Kumar to Trott, FOUR, more superb timing and placement from Trott as he drives through the covers...no issues with his strike-rate today

9.3

Vinay Kumar to Trott, no run, pushed back down the pitch to the bowler

9.4

Vinay Kumar to Trott, FOUR, back of a length, whipped off the stumps and the outfield is very quick. The fielder was kept interested but couldn't quite flick it back

9.5

Vinay Kumar to Trott, no run, seems harder to time on this pitch when the ball is back of a length and Trott punches back to the bowler

9.6

Vinay Kumar to Trott, OUT, breakthrough! Just as England were fighting back Trott feels outside off stump and gets a simple edge through to Dhoni. Nice line from Vinay, but slightly lazy from Trott after such a good start

IJL Trott c †Dhoni b Vinay Kumar 34 (43m 37b 7x4 0x6) SR: 91.89

So with that dismissal England are back in trouble. Now it's Liam into the comms seat.

End of over 10 (9 runs) England 48/3 (RR: 4.80)
     R Vinay Kumar    5-1-18-2
KP Pietersen    9* (14b 1x4)      P Kumar    5-1-26-1

Thanks Gnasher. Despite England's disastrous start, that wicket was against the run of play. Trott hadn't really had any problems and the pitch looks pretty benign. Oddly, Virat Kohli has been brought on after the wicket!

10.1

Kohli to Pietersen, no run, he lobs one up full and wide outside off to start, and is firmly driven to cover

10.2

Kohli to Pietersen, no run, pitched right up again, and the drive is stopped at cover

10.3

Kohli to Pietersen, no run, even slower through the air from Kohli, and KP dabs to gully

10.4

Kohli to Pietersen, no run, cracked on the up to extra cover

Kohli medium-pace wobblers will provide a serious test of Pietersen's patience.

10.5

Kohli to Pietersen, 1 run, finally the single comes, Pietersen's drive threading the gap in the covers before being hauled in by the sweeper

10.6

Kohli to Bopara, no run, full and straight from Kohli, Bopara defends with bat and pad firmly together

"Getting Kohli to bowl a few at Ravi while he's still scratching is a good idea," reckons Hugh. "He's not bad, and it'll give Dhoni more flexibility later on."

End of over 11 (1 run) England 49/3 (RR: 4.45)
RS Bopara    0* (1b)      V Kohli    1-0-1-0
KP Pietersen    10* (19b 1x4)      R Vinay Kumar    5-1-18-2

11.1

Vinay Kumar to Pietersen, no run, nicely full from Vinay Kumar, who stoops in his follow through to palm Pietersen's drive to mid-off

"Liam, who is all rounder in today's game?" asks Ashwin, a little cheekily. Erm ... Ravi Bopara?

11.2

Vinay Kumar to Pietersen, 1 run, Pietersen walks right across to off stumps and flicks off the pad, the ball rolling out to deep square

11.3

Vinay Kumar to Bopara, no run, well, there's an enthusiastic appeal as this one keeps a little low ... But that's come off the face of the bat

11.4

Vinay Kumar to Bopara, no run, a good testing line outside off from Vinay Kumar, who's still getting the ball to seam away from the right-handers

Actually, Ashwin, I'm going to put Kohli down as my allrounder for the day. How's that?

11.5

Vinay Kumar to Bopara, no run, pitched right up outside off, Bopara feeling a little for the ball as he stretches out to defend to point

11.6

Vinay Kumar to Bopara, 1 run, Ravi is off the mark, nudging a single through square leg

End of over 12 (2 runs) England 51/3 (RR: 4.25)

KP Pietersen    11* (21b 1x4)      V Kohli    1-0-1-0

Kohli, the all-round cricketer, to continue

12.1

Kohli to Bopara, 1 run, a slow-medium delivery outside off is tapped to extra cover

Biju has some questions, and he wants answers: "AS Kohli gives flexibility to Dhoni, why Dhoni himself to field and bowl some overs in between.? Is Parthiv Patel is a better fielder than a WK..??"

12.2

Kohli to Pietersen, no run, a very slow offcutter sits up in the pitch and is tapped hard back to the bowler

I should also tell you that Kohli is bowling in sunglasses. Pretty cool, no?

12.3

Kohli to Pietersen, 1 run, another offcutter, and it's turned with the spin towards midwicket

12.4

Kohli to Bopara, no run, full and straight, and Bopara comes forward to defend

12.5

Kohli to Bopara, 1 run, chopped down just behind square for a single

12.6

Kohli to Pietersen, no run, KP stands tall at the crease and slams a length delivery to wide mid-off

End of over 13 (3 runs) England 54/3 (RR: 4.15)
KP Pietersen    12* (24b 1x4)      V Kohli    2-0-4-0
RS Bopara    3* (8b)      R Vinay Kumar    6-1-20-2

Vinay Kumar continues. He's still got a solitary wide slip catcher, which is good to see

13.1

Vinay Kumar to Bopara, no run, a rising length delivery is pushed firmly to point

13.2

Vinay Kumar to Bopara, FOUR, once again Bopara cracks the ball behind square, this time the placement is superb and he beats both backward point and third man to pick up four

13.3

Vinay Kumar to Bopara, no run, the bowler responds by going fuller and straighter, and a defensive prod rolls to mid-off

13.4

Vinay Kumar to Bopara, no run, straighter still from Vinay Kumar. Bopara steps across and attempts to work to leg, but finds the man at midwicket

13.5

Vinay Kumar to Bopara, 1 run, pitched up and shaping gently away outside off. Bopara steps to the pitch and gets a good connection on the drive, sending the ball rolling out to deep cover

13.6

Vinay Kumar to Pietersen, no run, exaggerated seam movement! This was a cracking delivery. It went like a legbreak off the pitch and Pietersen, who was pressing half forward, was well and truly beaten

End of over 14 (5 runs) England 59/3 (RR: 4.21)
KP Pietersen    12* (25b 1x4)      R Vinay Kumar    7-1-25-2
RS Bopara    8* (13b 1x4)      V Kohli    2-0-4-0

14.1

Kohli to Bopara, 1 run, full and wide outside off, Bopara collects a single with a flashing square drive

14.2

Kohli to Pietersen, 1 run, a low, dipping full toss is squeezed down to short third man, where Parthiv makes a tumbling stop and parries the ball to Jadeja, who had run round from point

14.3

Kohli to Bopara, no run, full and straight, tapped into the off side

14.4

Kohli to Bopara, no run, Kohli cuts a slow delivery in off the pitch and Bopara, who stayed deep in the crease, can only push it back to the bowler

14.5

Kohli to Bopara, 1 run, a touch too straight from Kohli, and he's eased through midwicket for a single

14.6

Kohli to Pietersen, no run, punched to mid-on off the front foot

End of over 15 (3 runs) England 62/3 (RR: 4.13)
KP Pietersen    13* (27b 1x4)      V Kohli    3-0-7-0
RS Bopara    10* (17b 1x4)      R Vinay Kumar    7-1-25-2

With 15 overs bowled, there are powerplays up for grabs now. India immediately opt to take the bowling powerplay, and Umesh Yadav is brought into the attack. He bowled with good pace in the first ODI.

15.1

Yadav to Bopara, FOUR, and he's slammed to straight midwicket first ball! It wasn't the greatest delivery, a long hop that sat up and asked to be hit. Bopara obliged, nailing the pull

"@Biju: Partiv is a better fielder than Dhoni," writes Ashok.

15.2

Yadav to Bopara, no run, much better! Yadav bent his back this time and pitched it on a good length, beating the outside edge of Bopara's poke. Good carry through to Dhoni too

A slip has been brought in after that play-and-miss.

15.3

Yadav to Bopara, FOUR, shot! Bopara steps forward and caresses a cover drive through cover point. Great timing on the shot, he didn't try to over-hit it at all

15.4

Yadav to Bopara, no run, well, this over has been a real mixed bag. After that great shot Bopara stands still at the crease and attempts a flat-footed pull, missing the ball completely

15.5

Yadav to Bopara, no run, the fastest ball of the day so far. It's full of length and pushed defensively to cover

15.6

Yadav to Bopara, FOUR, Yadav has been a little all over the place in this over. Now he attempts a bouncer but there's no help off the pitch and Bopara doesn't bother trying to keep his pull down, collecting four at deep square

Just the 12 runs off the first powerplay over!

End of over 16 (12 runs) England 74/3 (RR: 4.62)

R Ashwin comes into the attack. About time too. No slip in place for him.

16.1

Ashwin to Pietersen, 1 run, he starts with a regulation offspinner that is flicked in front of square on the leg side

16.2

Ashwin to Bopara, no run, flighted on off stump. Ashwin gets some grip off the surface, Ravi defending the offspinner towards midwicket

A leg slip comes in now.

16.3

Ashwin to Bopara, no run, Ashwin continues to keep things tight, Bopara defending to leg

16.4

Ashwin to Bopara, 1 run, driven down to long on for an ambled single

16.5

Ashwin to Pietersen, no run, this looked pretty close! Pietersen went right across to off and bent down to sweep, but the ball fizzed past the bat and appeared to strike him on the pad. Perhaps there was some glove or bat on it? Either way, the umpire wasn't the least bit interested

16.6

Ashwin to Pietersen, FOUR, that's what he was trying to do! Again Pietersen bends low to sweep and moves across to off stump, but this time he gets a good connection and a diving fielder at fine leg can't stop the boundary

And that'll be drinks at the Feroz Shah Kotla.

"Playing Parthiv in XI makes no sense to me," writes Kamal. "The place can be easily taken by a proper batsman or an all rounder." Is Parthiv not a proper batsman? He's certainly got a decent first-class record.

17.1

Jadeja to Bopara, no run, flighted up on off stump from round the wicket, tapped to point

17.2

Jadeja to Bopara, no run, Bopara hangs back in the crease and pushes defensively square of the wicket

17.3

Jadeja to Bopara, 2 runs, a little too short from Jadeja, Bopara sends the ball forcefully out to deep cover where Vinay Kumar fumbles and allows them back for the second

17.4

Jadeja to Bopara, 1 run, that's the length! A little fuller from Jadeja, Bopara is drawn forward and the ball takes a thick edge, rolling to third man

17.5

Jadeja to Pietersen, no run, almost caught-and-bowled! Pietersen came forward without much certainty and pushed at the ball, which lobbed back towards Jadeja. The bowler leapt forward but couldn't quite get to it

17.6

Jadeja to Pietersen, no run, after the drama KP completes the over by defending to cover point

End of over 18 (3 runs) England 83/3 (RR: 4.61)

Ashwin to Pietersen, no run, flicked off the pad to square leg

18.4

Ashwin to Pietersen, 1 run, Ashwin trundles to the crease and does a little stop-start before releasing the ball, but it's safely negotiated by a defensive Pietersen

18.5

Ashwin to Bopara, 1 run, pushed wide of mid-on for one

18.6

Ashwin to Pietersen, 1 run, swept hard out to deep square leg, where there is protection on the boundary

End of over 19 (4 runs) England 87/3 (RR: 4.57)
KP Pietersen    20* (35b 2x4)      R Ashwin    2-0-10-0
RS Bopara    28* (33b 4x4)      RA Jadeja    1-0-3-0

19.1

Jadeja to Pietersen, 1 run, Pietersen skips down the track, getting to the pitch and nurdling to leg for one

19.2

Jadeja to Bopara, no run, watchfully played by Bopara, who waits for the spin and chops behind square

19.3

Jadeja to Bopara, no run, probing stuff from Jadeja, but again Bopara is very cautious and defends right under his eyes

19.4

Jadeja to Bopara, no run, pushed defensively into the covers

19.5

Jadeja to Bopara, 1 run, this lands a little too wide of off, and Bopara steps forward to drive to deep cover

19.6

Jadeja to Pietersen, no run, this one keeps a little low, but KP keeps his eye on it and taps back to the bowler

Here's Andrew McGlashan.

20.2

Ashwin to Bopara, 1 run, touch too straight, worked off the hip to square leg

20.3

Ashwin to Pietersen, 1 run, tries to use his feet, but this is a touch flat so he just bunts it along the ground to long on

20.4

Ashwin to Bopara, 1 run, outside off stump, Bopara onto the front foot and opens the face

20.5

Ashwin to Pietersen, no run, driven to cover

Thanks Andrew. It's been a see-sawing sort of a game so far. England will be in a healthy position if Samit and Jonny bat for much longer. Here's Kohli with the ball

40.1

Kohli to Patel, FOUR, not a great start! Short, wide, and slapped powerfully through cover point for four

Patel reached his highest ODI score with that six, by the way. And England won the match in which he got his previous top score ...

40.2

Kohli to Patel, 1 run, an offcutter is flicked to leg for one

40.3

"A few years into International cricket, Kohli's pace has not dropped unlike the others (not sure if it can drop any further) but lets give credit where it is due." That did make me chuckle, Pavel Braganza. Good name too!

40.4

Kohli to Patel, 1 run, full outside off, and eased through wide mid-off

Kohli's done a decent enough job but he needs a wicket or two to solidify his allrounder status ... Well, allrounder of the day at least.

40.5

Kohli to Bairstow, 1 run, tapped away, the call for the single is immediate but this is very tight! Bairstow really needed to get his legs moving as he charged across, a direct hit from mid-on finding him safely home

41.3

Yadav to Bairstow, 2 wides, ah, that is a horrid delivery, sprayed really wide by Yadav, and Dhoni had to stretch to stop it. In fact, he couldn't cut the ball off cleanly and is struck a painful blow on the ends of the fingers of his right hand

41.3

Yadav to Patel, no run, Raina! The ball was chopped hard to cover and it looked like runs were a certainty ... until Raina leapt athletically to his left to cut it off. He's exemplary in the field

41.4

Jadeja to Swann, 1 run, and Swann follows suit, working with the round-the-wicket angle to pick up a single on the leg side

44.5

Jadeja to Bresnan, 1 run, an attacking sweep from Bresnan, who gets a good connection and keeps it down but picks out the man at deep square

44.6

Jadeja to Swann, 1 run, canny bowling! Jadeja spotted Bresnan charging out and speared in a quicker one at his toes to draw a hurried jab from the batsman

End of over 45 (6 runs) England 227/7 (RR: 5.04)
GP Swann    7* (6b 1x4)      RA Jadeja    7-0-38-1

Vinay Kumar comes back into the attack.

45.1

Vinay Kumar to Swann, OUT, off stump cartwheels! Kumar has struck straight away, picking up his third wicket with a length delivery that kept just a shade low to beat Swann's attempted glide to third man, crashing into the top of off stump. England are in serious danger of being bowled out short of their 50 overs.

GP Swann b Vinay Kumar 7 (9m 7b 1x4 0x6) SR: 100.00

45.2

Vinay Kumar to Finn, no run, Kumar attacks the stumps again with a nicely full, straight delivery. Finn's defence is good enough to keep it out

45.3

Vinay Kumar to Finn, no run, sliding down leg? There's an emotive appeal from Kumar as he raps Finn's pads with one that does a little off the seam. The umpire is unmoved, however, and that looked to be going down the leg side

45.4

Vinay Kumar to Finn, 1 run, dug in short on off stump. The tall Finn gets up to ride the bounce and angles it down to third man

45.5

Vinay Kumar to Bresnan, no run, speared at middle and leg again, and Bresnan misses with the flick. There's no appeal this time, the ball clearly going down

45.6

Vinay Kumar to Bresnan, 1 wide, the attempted bouncer goes awry, going down the leg side

45.6

Vinay Kumar to Bresnan, OUT, an easy catch for Raina! Bresnan tried to loft a full delivery down the ground but didn't come close to timing it, scooping the ball tamely towards deep mid-off, where an unflustered Raina leapt to pluck it out of the air. There goes another one!

"Well, England have finally got some consistency in their ODI batting," spits James. "It's been rubbish both these games."

End of over 46 (2 runs) England 229/9 (RR: 4.97)

ST Finn    1* (3b)      RA Jadeja    7-0-38-1

46.1

Yadav to Finn, no run, good intent from Yadav, hurling one down full and straight. It hits the pad, but the angle was taking it down leg

46.2

Yadav to Finn, 1 run, tapped cautiously to midwicket, where Gambhir tumbles over in his attempt to stop the ball, allowing a scampered single

46.3

Yadav to Dernbach, 1 run, close! A full delivery was dropped close in on the off side and Finn wanted the single, but Jadeja sprinted in from point and under-armed the ball straight into the stumps. Finn had to get the dive out ... and it's fortunate he did so, as it's saved him!

46.4

Yadav to Finn, no run, arrowed in at Finn's toes, but he manages to get the bat down just in time to keep it out

46.5

Yadav to Finn, no run, and again! Superb yorker from Yadav, and the inside edge of Finn's bat saves his stumps

46.6

Yadav to Finn, 1 run, just short of a length on middle, the ball is tucked off the hip to leg ... and they take a single courtesy of a wild return throw from the fielder

End of over 47 (3 runs) England 232/9 (RR: 4.93)
ST Finn    3* (8b)      UT Yadav    8-0-48-2
JW Dernbach    1* (1b)      R Vinay Kumar    8-1-27-4

47.1

Vinay Kumar to Finn, no run, the ball takes a healthy outside edge of a poking bat and bounces towards backward point

47.2

Vinay Kumar to Finn, no run, nice length from Kumar, and the batsman is neither forward nor back as he presents a defensive bat

47.3

Vinay Kumar to Finn, 1 run, just a little short of that good length, and Finn is able to hang back and work a single wide of midwicket

"So much for spin friendly tracks," Nasir points out. "7 wkts have been taken by faster bowlers."

47.4

Vinay Kumar to Dernbach, 1 run, and now Kumar sends down the yorker! He doesn't quite have the same pace as Yadav, however, and is kept out easily enough

47.5

Vinay Kumar to Finn, 1 run, a hint of width is offered outside off, but and a firm push to cover brings a single

47.6

Vinay Kumar to Dernbach, no run, Dernbach looks a little clueless as he swishes at this length delivery, the ball taking the inside edge and thudding into his pad. Still, he survives!

Sam has this: "@James : Welcome to India mate. We had the same feeling while India was in England."

End of over 48 (3 runs) England 235/9 (RR: 4.89)
JW Dernbach    2* (3b)      R Vinay Kumar    9-1-30-4
ST Finn    5* (12b)      UT Yadav    8-0-48-2

48.1

Yadav to Finn, 1 run, chipped in the air on the leg side, but hitting the ground well short of the long on fielder

"Wickets always fall in pairs... True today! Other than the wicket of Trott, all the other wickets have fallen in pairs - in consecutive overs - until this last pair (8th and 9th) which fell in the same over." Yes, we'd noticed that Shrikant, a truism proved true today.

48.2

Yadav to Dernbach, 1 run, OUT, silly running! The ball was flicked to leg and there was certainly an easy single on offer. Dernbach certainly thought it was only one, he ran past the stumps at the non-striker's end, but Finn was set on a second run. A total communication breakdown, and even as Dernbach set off in the vain hope of reaching the striker's end before the ball, Finn was turning around with the same idea. Needless to say, Dernbach is easily run out and England are out for 237

JW Dernbach run out 3 (13m 4b 0x4 0x6) SR: 75.00

Not the happiest day with the bat for England, who repeatedly set themselves up with plucky partnerships before losing wickets at crucial times. And in pairs! There were no real demons in the wicket. Yes, the odd one seamed, kept low, or spun, but there was nothing dramatic and 250 or more should've been on, despite their disastrous start. But let's take nothing away from India, who obviously had a gameplan with the ball and were generally very good in the field. Vinay Kumar led the way with a career-best 4 for 30, and you can read all about his effort and the first-innings action in George Binoy's report. Join us in half an hour or so for India's chase.
