England in India ODI Series - 3rd ODI

India v England

India won by 5 wickets (with 4 balls remaining)

Sam: "Cook is batting first because only one team has ever won an ODI on this pitch batting second. Good toss to win. Our batters are much more adept to this type of pitch early on, less so with dew."

We're good to go, Cook and Kieswetter to open for England. They're marking their guards. Praveen Kumar to begin India's attack, from over the wicket. One slip and a gully are the catchers.

2.20 pm "Didn't understand bat first approach by England. They have better bowling attack. In first one-day they were good until Dhoni changed the equation. Mohali also gives some assistance to fast bowlers. They should have tried to contain India rather than folding for below par score," says Omkar.

I found Cook's decision puzzling too. He's allowing India's spinners to bowl with a dry ball and his with a possibly wet one. Having said that, two new balls under lights could do a fair bit.

2.15 pm So England have stuck with the XI that lost the first two ODIs. Admirable faith in the players, or a case of "You got us into this mess, now get us out of it." There was reportedly a lot of dew last night and if tonight is similar, Samit Patel and Graeme Swann could struggle.

Simon: "I'm all for backing your men but this is just daft. Sticking with XI players who have been comprehensively outmatched in a must-win game when you have the likes of Bell, Onions and Borthwick in the side beggars belief. Even Meaker looks worth a punt."

Karkel: "Ian Bell should have replaced Kieswetter as he would offer more in batting than Kieswetter has so far. Jonathan Bairstow is a very good keeper so England would lose nothing there."

Toss, 2.00pm Alastair Cook has won the toss and England will bat. England are unchanged. Cook's backing the same XI to turn it around.

Dhoni said he was going to bowl first anyway. He said that in Delhi too because of the dew. Though he added that he doesn't think there will be much of a difference on this pitch. India are unchanged as well.

1.55 pm Sunil Gavaskar on NEO Sports reckons the England bowlers will like this Mohali pitch. There's a bit of grass on it. But then he goes on to say that the ball will come on to the bat and expect more than 250 runs on this pitch. Go figure. There should be some dew in the evening.

The teams are reportedly unchanged. Will have confirmation of that shortly.

1.40 pm Hello and welcome to ESPNcricinfo's ball-by-ball coverage of the third ODI between India and England in Mohali. India lead the five-match series 2-0 so England need to win three on the trot to steal the series. It appears an impossible task. They have won only one out of their last 15 ODIs in India and none since April 2006. But stranger things have happened in cricket.

Here's Andrew Miller's preview of the game. Andrew McGlashan had a few ideas for the England team - a fightback plan. Do you have any novel ones?

The forecast is for fair weather today. A high of about 25-26C and mostly sunny conditions. The players are out on the field warming-up. Noticed several empty stands at the PCA Stadium. ODI attendances have been oddly less than houseful this series.

Vinay Kumar to Cook, OUT, lbw! The umpire is quick to raise the finger. The ball pitched short of a length on middle, began to angle across Cook before straightening into the left hander. Cook played across the line from his crease and was hit just above the knee roll. I wonder if that was a touch high. Cook lingered and wasn't pleased.

11.5

12.1

Kohli to Kieswetter, OUT, bowled! How did that happen? Kohli delivered a full ball outside off which swung into the right-hander. Kieswetter stayed in his crease and tried to chop towards point or third man. He should have been forward to that. The ball took the inside edge right at the bottom of the bat and uprooted leg stump. Thanks George. Hello everyone! Praveen Kumar comes back for a Powerplay spell.

16.1

Kumar to Pietersen, no run, just short of a driveable length, KP standing tall and punching to mid off

16.2

Kumar to Pietersen, no run, deceptive stuff from Praveen. He looks so innucuous, yet always gets the ball to do a little more than expected. This was a slow legcutter that was defended back down the track

16.3

Kumar to Pietersen, FOUR, shot! There wasn't a great deal wrong with the delivery - perhaps just a hint of width - but Pietersen's power and placement through cover was spot on

16.4

Kumar to Pietersen, no run, an offcutter this time, Praveen straightening his line and drawing KP's defence again

16.5

Kumar to Pietersen, FOUR, four more! Again too much width is offered on this benign pitch, and Pietersen sends the ball screaming to the cover boundary with a firm slap

"In Brendan Taylor is another Andy or a Fletcher in making?" asks Avinash. He's certainly got the potential to be. He's already edging into the top five runscorers of all time for Zimbabwe in ODIs. In Chandigarh, it's Umesh Yadav back into the attack.

Jadeja's left-arm spin back into the attack. One way or another, this should be interesting!

29.1

Jadeja to Pietersen, OUT, a huge appeal, and the finger goes up! Pietersen stretched forward in defence but the ball goes straight on with the angle from round the wicket to rap him on the pad. He's given, lbw. That's a brave decision, as Pietersen was quite a long way down, but it did look pretty adjacent. KP was flabbergasted to be given out, but eventually dragged himself from the crease
