England in India ODI Series - 4th ODI

India v England

India won by 6 wickets (with 59 balls remaining)

2.29pm Right, we're just about ready to go. Praveen Kumar has the new ball in his hands, and two slips behind the wicket. Cook to face.

"I can't fathom why Cook is batting first for the 3rd time in a row!" writes Tilo. "Chasing a target may actually allow the English batsmen to come out of their shells a bit, not to mention the dew. Only reason I can think of is that they have Borthwick and want him to come into the game in the 2nd innings."

"Yadav has been bowling around the 140kp mark all through the series. How could Varun be faster?" asks Stefan. "Is he India's long waited Brett Lee?"

2.15pm A typical Mumbai wicket, reckons a sweaty Sir Ian, who also brings England's surplus of dot balls in their previous couple of matches. While we're waiting for the action to begin, there's a full preview package for you to peruse. This has been a noticeably bad-tempered series for England, but coach Andy Flower has defended their attitude. Batsman Jonathan Trott has suggested that the problem may be that England have not been doing the basics well enough. Meanwhile, Sharda Ugra warns that, while India have done well to seal the series with three wins in three games, if anyone thinks India have righted the wrongs of the summer in England with the result in the home ODI series, they need to think again.

2.05pm England have won the toss and decided to bat first. Interesting. As Dustin Silgardo's excellent preview will tell you, India have won nine of the last 10 matches they have chased in. And indeed, India wanted to bowl so they won't mind this. There's also some team news just in - Borthwick and Meaker's entrance has been confirmed, and Varun Aaron comes in for Umesh Yadav. He's widely regarded the fastest bowler in India.

Rumour has it that England have included Borthwick and Meaker for Swann and Dernbach, but no batting changes. Still no Ian Bell in the XI!

It's a hot, bright day at the Wankhede. Touch of green on the grass, which will help the batsmen more than the bowlers, quickening the wicket a touch.

Hello everybody, and welcome to ESPNcricinfo's coverage of the fourth ODI between India and England. The series, which has already been sealed by India, has moved on to the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

0.1

Kumar to Cook, no run, predictably, there's a touch of swing for Praveen first up. This one wobbles away through the air outside off and is left alone

Sidd writes: "Aaron doesn't actually have much First class, List A or T20 experience (35 matches in all). his first class bowling avg. is ordinary (41.5) but list A avg. looks good (17.47). Hasn't done much in his recent matches either barring a 4-for in the emerging players series. Hmm... so he is in just because he is fast?"

0.2

Kumar to Cook, no run, curving away once more, and Cook punches hard to cover off the back foot to cover, where Rahane pulls off a diving stop

0.3

Kumar to Cook, no run, Cook doesn't quite have the requisite room for the cut, and a cramped shot is bottom-edged straight down

0.4

Kumar to Cook, no run, fuller from Praveen, and Cook leans forward into a punchy drive. Cover point gets a hand to it, and the man on the edge of the circle stops the single

0.5

Kumar to Cook, no run, full, wide and swinging away. This time Cook's not tempted, and leaves alone

0.6

Kumar to Cook, no run, a full length delivery just about on off stump is pushed to extra cover, and Praveen starts with a maiden

End of over 1 (maiden) England 0/0 (RR: 0.00)
AN Cook    0* (6b)      P Kumar    1-1-0-0
C Kieswetter    0* (0b)

Vinay Kumar will open from the other end. He has just the one slip in place, and a man catching at a close cover point.

1.1

Vinay Kumar to Kieswetter, no run, banged in just short of a good length outside off, the ball seaming away as it's left alone by Kieswetter

Not much bounce or carry in the wicket, it appears.

1.2

Vinay Kumar to Kieswetter, no run, pushed firmly to cover off the back foot, but there's a ring of fielders there to stop the shot

Speaking of dot balls, Kieswetter has apparently played the most of all the batsmen in this series.

1.3

Vinay Kumar to Kieswetter, no run, slung down on a length just outside off. The delivery goes straight on after pitching, but is safely left on length

1.4

Vinay Kumar to Kieswetter, no run, Kieswetter is half forward and defending to extra cover

1.5

Vinay Kumar to Kieswetter, no run, Kieswetter continues to play with utmost caution, leaving alone outside off

1.6

Vinay Kumar to Kieswetter, no run, a checked punch bounces into the covers, and there's no run to be had. Two maidens on the trot for India!

End of over 2 (maiden) England 0/0 (RR: 0.00)
C Kieswetter    0* (6b)      R Vinay Kumar    1-1-0-0
AN Cook    0* (6b)      P Kumar    1-1-0-0

"To me England's main problem is their slow start in every ODI here," reckons Shamshir. "How on earth you would play 120 k's bowler like Parveen for a maiden? and that too on flat tracks? Why be over defensive?"

2.1

Kumar to Cook, no run, Cook swivels back to pull but is beaten on the under edge and struck on the thigh

2.2

Kumar to Cook, FOUR, finally, runs! Nice shot from Cook, who leaned forward to place a drive wide of mid off. Once it beat the fielder it raced quickly to the fence

2.3

Kumar to Cook, no run, a flashing drive, and a play-and-miss! Praveen got this one to jag sharply away off the pitch, and a flat-footed Cook didn't get close

2.4

Kumar to Cook, no run, this time the feet did move, but it didn't make a difference, and Cook is beaten once again!

There's some sort of problem near the sightscreen behind the bowler's arm that's troubling Cook. Not sure what the issue is.

2.5

Kumar to Cook, no run, beaten for the third time in a row! Well, there's nothing really extravagant off the pitch but Cook is struggling to put bat on ball. This time he is back and cutting, to no avail

2.6

Kumar to Cook, no run, straighter from Praveen to finish, and Cook taps it back to the bowler

End of over 3 (4 runs) England 4/0 (RR: 1.33)
AN Cook    4* (12b 1x4)      P Kumar    2-1-4-0
C Kieswetter    0* (6b)      R Vinay Kumar    1-1-0-0

3.1

Vinay Kumar to Kieswetter, SIX, Kieswetter has had enough of defence! He comes down the track to the first ball, a length delivery, and smashes a towering six back over the bowler's head. That's more like it

3.2

Vinay Kumar to Kieswetter, no run, and he follows that up with studied defence as Vinay hones in on the top of off

3.3

Vinay Kumar to Kieswetter, no run, appreciable seam movement away from the batsman, and off a good length too. Kieswetter raises his hands to leave alone

3.4

Vinay Kumar to Kieswetter, FOUR, slapped hard through cover point! Vinay offered too much width, and Kieswetter scythed through the line of the ball to send it racing to the boundary

3.5

Vinay Kumar to Kieswetter, FOUR, Kieswetter is up and running with another boundary! This was another gift from the bowler, who speared the ball towards leg stump. Fine leg was very wide, and couldn't get around to stop Kieswetter's glance

3.6

Vinay Kumar to Kieswetter, no run, a full ball on off stump is met with solid defence

End of over 4 (14 runs) England 18/0 (RR: 4.50)
C Kieswetter    14* (12b 2x4 1x6)      R Vinay Kumar    2-1-14-0
AN Cook    4* (12b 1x4)      P Kumar    2-1-4-0

4.1

Kumar to Cook, 2 runs, good placement brings Cook a couple, his shovel to leg bisecting the men at mid on and midwicket

Suresh Raina is off the field. He was at cover point in the last over and took a nasty blow to the end of the fingers on his right hand trying to stop the Kieswetter boundary in that region.

4.2

Kumar to Cook, no run, whipped into the leg side again, but straight at the fielder this time

4.3

Kumar to Cook, no run, cut hard, but again Cook hits the field

4.4

Kumar to Cook, no run, fetched into the leg side again, but the ball is stopped inside the inner circle

4.5

Kumar to Cook, FOUR, hammered through point! Cook breaks the shackles with a flashing cut

Meanwhile down in Auckland, an epic Rugby World Cup final is entering the final quarter. Follow it now on ESPNscrum.

4.6

Kumar to Cook, no run, punched firmly to mid off to end the over

Raina is back on the field now, so the damage can't have been too severe.

End of over 5 (6 runs) England 24/0 (RR: 4.80)
AN Cook    10* (18b 2x4)      P Kumar    3-1-10-0
C Kieswetter    14* (12b 2x4 1x6)      R Vinay Kumar    2-1-14-0

Now, this is an interesting decision. Dhoni is bringing R Ashwin on. Good move, you'd say. Both openers would prefer pace on the ball. There's an orthodox slip and a very deep leg slip/short fine leg in place. Ashwin will start round the wicket.

5.1

Ashwin to Kieswetter, no run, nudged watchfully to square leg

5.2

Ashwin to Kieswetter, FOUR, drilled down the ground! Kieswetter isn't going to let Ashwin settle, and uses his feet to get to the pitch, slapping the ball with great power

5.3

Ashwin to Kieswetter, SIX, Kieswetter on the charge! Again he's down the track, but this time doesn't bother to keep it down. Quite the opposite, in fact, and a towering six lands in the crowd beyond wide long on.

A man is sent out to long on after the shot, deep backward square comes in. And Ashwin switches to over the wicket.

5.4

Ashwin to Kieswetter, FOUR, the carrom ball from Ashwin, but it slips down the leg side and comes off the face of Kieswetter's bat. Four more!

5.5

Ashwin to Kieswetter, 1 run, floated down outside off, Kieswetter defends to midwicket and finds something of a gap, allowing a single

"Kieswetter is a poor man's Sehwag: when it clicks, it clicks!" writes Mark Kidger. "Over the last few months he's been showing signs that he's getting back to his destructive best without quite managing a matchwinning innings. Pehaps, with the series lost, he'll just go out to enjoy himself."

5.6

Ashwin to Cook, OUT, he's given him! The ball rushed straight on as Cook pressed forward, rapping him on the front pad. The appeal was exuberant, and Umpire Asnani's finger went up straight away. Cook doesn't look entirely pleased with the decision. He was a long way down the pitch, stretching forward

AN Cook lbw b Ashwin 10 (19b 2x4 0x6) SR: 52.63

End of over 6 (15 runs) England 39/1 (RR: 6.50)
     R Ashwin    1-0-15-1
C Kieswetter    29* (17b 4x4 2x6)      P Kumar    3-1-10-0

6.1

Kumar to Kieswetter, OUT, both openers depart, Kieswetter following his captain and falling lbw. This one shot through very low off a length, nipping under Kieswetter's defensive bat and hitting him right in front. It was obviously plumb, and Praveen's appeal was a little Broad-esque, as he charged towards his team-mates in celebration before belatedly turning to appeal

C Kieswetter lbw b Kumar 29 (18b 4x4 2x6) SR: 161.11

"Looks like the England batsmen are again falling in twos!" writes Kshitij Baldua. Pietersen has a slip and a leg slip waiting for an edge off his bat.

6.2

Kumar to Pietersen, no run, Pietersen lunges forward to defend his first delivery

Dhoni is coming up to the stumps to stop Pietersen using his feet now.

6.3

Kumar to Pietersen, 1 run, punched just wide of mid off, and Pietersen is off the mark with a scampered single

6.4

Kumar to Trott, FOUR, superb touch! That's quite a way to get off the mark. Praveen pitched one up outside off, and Trott leaned into a checked cover drive to caress the ball to the boundary

6.5

Kumar to Trott, no run, again Trott is forward and driving, but this time the ball goes to mid off

6.6

Kumar to Trott, no run, Praveen keeps his length full, and Trott's drive is intercepted in the covers

End of over 7 (5 runs) England 44/2 (RR: 6.28)
IJL Trott    4* (3b 1x4)      P Kumar    4-1-15-1
KP Pietersen    1* (2b)      R Ashwin    1-0-15-1

Dhoni immediately brings Ravindra Jadeja into the attack. How will Pietersen respond?

7.1

Jadeja to Pietersen, no run, a watchful drive is placed into the covers, Jadeja having come round the wicket

7.2

Jadeja to Pietersen, 1 run, pitched right up on off stump, Pietersen eases a single to long off

A man is brought in to a close, straight mid off for Trott.

7.3

Jadeja to Trott, no run, tapped gently to cover

7.4

Jadeja to Trott, no run, driven hard towards mid off, and a diving stop cuts it off

7.5

Jadeja to Trott, no run, Jadeja offers width outside off, but the backfoot punch goes to point

Straight mid off is moved to leg slip.

7.6

Jadeja to Trott, 1 run, driven to long off for an ambled single to end the over

End of over 8 (2 runs) England 46/2 (RR: 5.75)
IJL Trott    5* (7b 1x4)      RA Jadeja    1-0-2-0
KP Pietersen    2* (4b)      P Kumar    4-1-15-1

8.1

Kumar to Trott, no run, pitched up and wobbling away from the batsman outside off. Trott comes forward and drives hard to cover

The two catchers are at short cover point and short extra cover.

8.2

Kumar to Trott, 1 run, punched down the ground. Mid on scoots round to stop the shot, but a single is taken

8.3

Kumar to Pietersen, no run, Pietersen stands tall and cracks a length delivery hard back to the bowler

8.4

Kumar to Pietersen, no run, there's plenty of intent in this backfoot slap from Pietersen, but the ball goes straight to mid off

8.5

Kumar to Pietersen, SIX, lifted over long off! The delivery - a long half-volley - invited the shot. Pietersen seemed to have sliced across it a little, but the timing was good enough for the ball to clear the rope

8.6

Kumar to Pietersen, 1 run, drilled at mid off to end the over. The man is deep so the single is on

End of over 9 (8 runs) England 54/2 (RR: 6.00)
KP Pietersen    9* (8b 1x6)      P Kumar    5-1-23-1
IJL Trott    6* (9b 1x4)      RA Jadeja    1-0-2-0

9.1

Jadeja to Pietersen, 1 run, Pietersen bends into a sweep, sending the ball bouncing out to the man at deep square

9.2

Jadeja to Trott, 2 runs, whipped off the pads to deep midwicket, and they're back for the second

9.3

Jadeja to Trott, FOUR, a poor delivery gets the treatment, Trott hanging back to thump a long hop through cover

9.4

Jadeja to Trott, no run, fuller and straighter from Jadeja, and Trott drives to straight mid off

9.5

Jadeja to Trott, no run, Trott stays back to defend quietly back to the bowler

9.6
