England in India ODI Series - 5th ODI

India v England

India won by 95 runs

Minutes away from the start. Gautam Gambhir will open with Ajinkya Rahane today because Parthiv Patel was replaced by Manoj Tiwary, who slots in to the middle order. Tim Bresnan will open the attack from the Pavilion end. It's a bit overcast at the moment. Two slips in place ...

Just before we start we have a public service broadcast. Sam Collins, one half of the Two Chucks, has a request. "We are looking for an amateur film-maker/cameraman in Nagpur for unpaid help on a project discussing the future of cricket, contact info@chuckfleetwoodsmiths.com." So if anyone can help him, get in touch. With Sam, not us, that is!

2.20 pm Here's an interesting take from Tom Bombadil: "Perhaps people are saving up for Sachin's 100th 100. Who knows how many matches people will have to watch (with Sachin playing in the XI) before he actually gets there. And imagine the stadium turnout after he has reached that mark!" Where's Goldberry, Tom?

Suyog: "The low turnout is due to expensive tickets. The local associations are trying to milk the public by charging exorbitantly where facilities for the spectators are sub-standard."

Biswa: "Even though Sachin, Yuvraj, Sehwag, Bhajji, Zaheer are not playing and it is Diwali time and the ticket is costly, I expected a lot of people to go watch it in Eden. One does not witness a whitewash everyday."

Barney: "Nice one England, drop scott borthwick after one game. Good for his confidence. And take Graham Onions half way around the world and not bother to give him one game in what is, after all, a dead rubber!"

And a reply from Goldberry: "Tom Tom where have you been Tom, The forest misses you, so do I. Tom Tom you have been watching cricket lately? How dare you not tell me, wait until I die. Tom Tom I hate you Tom. I am going to Jerry." And that's the last of the Tolkien randomness. The cricket is about to begin.

2.15 pm "Is it possible that the low crowd turn out is due in part to the World Cup? asks Tim. "I can imagine tickets would have been more expensive for WC games and the fans that went to them would have already seen India play England this year." There are enough people who wouldn't have watched the World Cup games at the stadium to fill several Eden Gardens.

Hari: "Before coming to conclusion that poor turn out is because of too much cricket, remember that Sachin, Sehwag and Yuvraj are not playing which is still important reason for many to watch cricket."

Charan: "Low turn out also could be because of Diwali,a major festival in India, and most of the family budget goes towards it rather than the high ticket price."

George: "Not surprised the grounds aren't full. A gang of us were going to travel to Mumbai from Dubai but getting tickets proved nigh on impossible. Gave up in the end. Shambolic."

Toss, 2.00 pm Alastair Cook's won the toss and this time England will bowl. Tactical change, Cook says, dew a factor. Pietersen's not playing because of a broken thumb and has been replaced by Bell. Graeme Swann's back as well, in place of Scott Borthwick.

Dhoni said he would have bowled first too. India have made one change, Parthiv Patel has been replaced by Manoj Tiwary, which means Gautam Gambhir is likely to open with Ajinkya Rahane.

1.55 pm Sourav Ganguly, on NEO sports, says the pitch will play slow and that there will be dew in the evening. He should know, given it's Kolkata. India will look to chase as usual. Will Cook want to bat first again though?

1.35 pm Hello and welcome to ESPNcricinfo's ball-by-ball coverage of the final ODI between India and England in Kolkata. There were reports in the newspapers that only about 6000 tickets had been sold (not including member passes etc) and the early images from the ground are of an empty Eden Gardens. It seats about 65,000. The turn-out in Mumbai was poor as well, on a Sunday that too. None of the first three venues were full either, an unprecedented occurrence for an ODI series in India.

The word is that Kevin Pietersen is out of the game with a chipped thumb. So Ian Bell might finally get a game. England are down 0-4 in the series.

Then, with wickets in hand & big hitters, you can more than double your score. Rahane has been pretty consistent but we can give him a little more time to be comfortable at this level. There is always a huge pressure on these youngsters to score big to retain their place."

India reach 271 for 8 courtesy of a superbly-paced knock from their captain, MS Dhoni. He started slowly but took full control at the death, accelerating to an unbeaten 69-ball 75 and setting a new Indian record for an unbeaten run in ODIs. After a solid opening stand, Dhoni had helped to steady the middle overs with Suresh Raina, and also found able partners in Jadeja and Praveen Kumar, whose cameos helped to boost the total. England have quite a task ahead of them if they are to avoid a clean sweep. Read all about today's action in Andrew Miller's report, and join us in 40 minutes or so for the chase.
