Ishant Sharma, the India fast bowler, is struggling with viral fever but is expected to be fit for the first Test against England, which starts on Thursday. The BCCI has named Bengal fast bowler Ashok Dinda as a standby.
Ishant has missed cricket for much of the year due to an ankle problem which needed surgery. He returned to the India squad for the New Zealand series three months ago, but didn't get to play as Zaheer Khan and Umesh Yadav were preferred.
The standby player, Dinda, has played 10 ODIs and five T20Is for India but is yet to make his Test debut. Dinda had a strong start to the domestic season, taking nine in the Duleep Trophy match against South Zone, but his form has tapered off since. In four subsequent first-class matches, he has only managed four wickets for 316 runs.
It is unlikely that either of Ishant or Dinda will get to play the first Test in Ahmedabad as India are expected to go in with Zaheer and Yadav as the fast bowlers, with two spinners to complete the attack.
Ishant missed India's two-and-a-half hour practice session in Ahmedabad on Tuesday, while Zaheer, who was a slight fitness concern after walking off from his Ranji match against Railways with a groin problem, took part.

I feel INDIA should go with five front line bowlers. Two pacers , three spinners and six batsmen. As we all know INDIA is a poor starter. First test at ( Motera ) Ahmadabad will be very vital. If India start with with a winning note then we can think of clean sweep. Last time India lost a test series in India in the year 1984. In the next series es 1992, 2001.2005, 2008, England could not do well, every time struggled against Indian spinners. England batsmen having poor avg. in Asian pitches except in Bangadesh they did not do well. This time they did lots of home work to counter spin. Chief Coach Andy Flawer and Greaham Gooch both are great exponents of spin bowling. this series will be a litmus test for senior pro's like Sachin, Sahwagh, Gouti, Zaheer, Bhajji and more over capt. Mahi. If he wants to keep his place intact as an Indian capt. he has to be spot on. At the same he should not forget the Sahwagh has a great cricketing brain on his shoulders, Always Keep him happy .
Posted by SanjivAwesome on (November 14, 2012, 9:50 GMT)A team with that selects Tendulkar, Gambhir, Harbhajan, Sehwag, Ishant and Rohit goes into this match as under-dogs. Pitch conditions are secondary. England are a dangerous team and we should have selected a better team.
Posted by RandyOZ on (November 14, 2012, 9:10 GMT)Ishant has a terrible record. Boy the cupboard is as bare in India as it is in England.
Posted by alwaysindia on (November 14, 2012, 8:02 GMT)@ wolf777 don't worry man , no need to play bowlers at all, play 11 batsmen . yuvraj singh and sehwag are enough for england
Posted by alwaysindia on (November 14, 2012, 8:00 GMT)@ GerrardLK what about eng have they produced good fast bowlers to play well outside eng. you are making yourself look very foolish. lets see what your fast bowlers can do here
Posted by alwaysindia on (November 14, 2012, 7:58 GMT)@ neerajprasher not to mention where he got most of his wickets. and yet he is called SIR. wonder what srt would have been called if he played for eng. don't worry about gerrard uk , he always barks
Posted by Fast_Track_Bully on (November 14, 2012, 6:27 GMT)@yorkslanka. India always played with 4 bowlers. We have Sehwag, Yuvraj etc as part time spinners to add one more batsman. And our spinners are good enough to take 20 wickets at least in sub-continent pitches. Read the history.
Posted by 007Pralay on (November 14, 2012, 6:13 GMT)where is Varun Aarun,, we want to see him in action..!!
Posted by ranjithrissur on (November 14, 2012, 5:44 GMT)@Yorkslanka:we can ask for yuvi.we can depend him.
Posted by wolf777 on (November 14, 2012, 4:26 GMT)@ Vinay Kolhatkar Rohit S. as in Nohit Sharma??? Real batting prospect? LOL…agree with the rest of the comment though…If you overbowl your fast bowlers, the speed will naturally drop. Same is true with the spinner…overbowling will kill the spin. Need to have an allrounder in the team…
