Sandeep Patil's selection panel is set to reveal their plans for reviving India's Test fortunes on Monday when they pick the team for the first of the four Tests against England, starting in Ahmedabad on November 15.

Though the five new selectors met in Chennai on October 24 to pick the India A squad for last week's tour opener in what was their first formal selection meet, this will be the first time they will announce a Test squad after taking over from Kris Srikkanth's panel at the beginning of last month.

Despite Patil's belligerence on the field during his playing days, he is unlikely to make any drastic changes to the squad that featured in the two-Test series against New Zealand in August-September. The selectors are likely to first get their eye in before starting to play the big shots, especially if there are no fitness worries with the squad.

As of now, there were minor concerns over two first-choice players. Virender Sehwag had a cut on his right index finger, which prompted him to move down to No. 6 for Delhi in their Ranji match against Uttar Pradesh, though he batted for an hour till stumps. The other worry is Zaheer Khan, who walked off mid-over in the final session of Mumbai's match against Railways after seemingly indicating a problem with his groin.

One big change from the squad for the New Zealand series is likely to be the widely expected recall of Yuvraj Singh after being on the sidelines for almost a year. He was diagnosed with a germ-cell cancer soon after he was dropped for the third Test against the West Indies in Mumbai in November last year. Since making his return to international cricket during the Twenty20 international against New Zealand and the World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka, Yuvraj has continued to take rapid strides towards a Test spot. His 208 for North Zone against Central Zone in the Duleep Trophy on his return to first-class cricket last month was followed up with a 59 and a five-for against England for India A at the Brabourne Stadium last week.

As a result, one of the two reserve batsmen during the New Zealand Test series - Ajinkya Rahane and S Badrinath - is set to make way for Yuvraj from the squad that featured against New Zealand. With Rahane making a statement with a second-innings fifty against England and a big hundred against Railways in the Ranji opener, it could be the unlucky Badrinath who is excluded from the squad yet again.

The other change will be in the spin department. Piyush Chawla, the Uttar Pradesh legspinner who was surprisingly brought in as the reserve spinner against New Zealand, is yet to recover from a thumb injury. As a result, don't be surprised if Harbhajan Singh, who was recalled for the T20s against Kiwis without having done anything remarkable during his year-long hiatus from the national team, returns to the Test squad. Despite Harbhajan having gone wicketless in his 21 overs for Punjab against Hyderabad in Mohali, the selectors don't have many options to look at as the third spinner, especially as Amit Mishra is far from his best at the start of the domestic season.

Good that he's returning but if he's trying to be the Number 1 all-rounder forget it he has no chance unless he scores a 100 and takes a 5 wicket haul against a strong team like England in the same innings to make a case good luck!! :)

legspiinwr should be included as from his googl;ies . spinnies the straighter one but india doesnt have one - if they had i bet would hv taken arnd 15 wickets

if sehwag is not fit plz brng rahane instead of vijay

Posted by joseyesu on (November 5, 2012, 7:35 GMT)

Considering fitness, I would go with Gambir, Dhawan, Kohli, Sachin, Yuvraj, Pujara, Dhoni, Yadav, Ishant/Praveen, Ashwin, Ojha in the playing 11.

NADEEM seems like a young spinner with a lot of heart. Could he be INDIA's search for a good left arm orthodox spinner???? Some of his victims are being CLEAN BOWLED. He takes wickets by the buckets and also had shown lots of heart in IPL.

My Choice 1. Shewag 2.Gambhir 3. Pujara 4. Sachin 5. Kohli 6. Yuvi 7.Dhoni 8. Pathan 9. Ashwin 10. Ojha 11. Uadav 12.Rahane 13.Tiwary 14.Bajji 14.Zaheer

I am just foreseeing the pathetic situation, wherein Sachin is forced to retire from all form of Cricket. He got a wonderful chance after the World Cup win. But now, He is kinda trapped looking for a chance to retire. But It's gonna be Worse than Pathetic!!!

This article makes depressing reading. I wish they would go boldly and pick Rahane for the number six spot. As for the third spinner, we dont need one for a home test unless we play five bowlers. if either Ashwin or Ojha get injured we should call the best bowler so far in Ranji this season and just fly him in. It is an unlikely event anyway. Harbhajan's time is better spent in first class cricket where he can learn how to spin.

Posted by AbhiPahil on (November 5, 2012, 6:55 GMT)

And plz no more Gambhir in test matches(on basis of test form) ....he need to shut his mouth and play ranji to prove his form.

Posted by satish619chandar on (November 5, 2012, 6:54 GMT)

@wolf777 : Just the name leg spinner won't scare but a potentially good LS. Mishra and Chawla are not that good to be trusted. What India have is, almost similar type- left arm who can turn the ball away from the right hander. Though it can't be same as leg spinner, it will almost equal it. Ojha will certainly play and Yuvi almost certain to play. It should work if England succumb to their weakness.

my 11 for 1at test: Rahane,Sehwag,Pujara,Tendulkar,Kohli,Y Singh,Dhoni,Ashwin,Yadav,Ojha,Khan(if fit) or Irfan.

@Indianumerouno, if a domestic average of 60+ over 10 years is not an indication of hunger and temperament, then what is? To be able to make a statement, one should get opportunities. Why was Badri not even in the India A team to be allowed the chance to fail? He has just played three test innings, all against South Africa, in which he has scored one 50. Whenever CK is 0 for 2, Dhoni sends Badri ahead of himself and Raina - that shows the trust he has in Badri's temparement and ability to hold an end up. As compared to the chances Yuvraj, Raina and Rohit Sharma have got, Badri has not even got 5% of the chances. The question is not Badri or Rahane, which seems to be your misunderstanding here. The question is why Raina and Yuvraj for tests? And why must people like Badri suffer all the time? For test cricket, my pecking order has Badri, Pujara, Rahane and Manoj Tiwari ahead of both Raina and Yuvraj - since their temperament and consistency for the longer format is much better.

I don't understand why all the selectors are in favour of giving harbhajan singh so many chances again and again, even though he has done nothing convincing to get back into the team, jst on the basis of experience u can't do it.....his selection in the world T20 was also done on the basis of experience only n what did he do there except against england,??????????? sO its better to give chance to a new young bowler like RAHUL SHARMA, who was unecessarily excluded from the squad against new zealand without even making his debut, so atleast he should get a chance to show his calliber in the longer form of the game and this could be the best time for giving him a chance by selecting him in the first test.......

announce just twelve people. why 15 for a home test series? this is stupid. at least the player who sits out can play a ranji without warming the seat.

Question here is not who is inform or not,, question is that who can bat for long hours,, who can bowl long spells. Does Zak has that stemins?? big question,, does any of our bowlers have that stemina,, even bigger question. Steyn can bowl consistantly at 140 speed for long spells,, yet he plays in every game,, be it IPL or test or T20 and delivers,,,, Can Sehwag, Gautam, Sachin, Zak, Bhajji, Balaji, run fast and slide to save boundry?? i dont think so,,,, Can MSD show a same body language in test matches as he shows in one dayers?? big question,, Why we stick to same people till eternity??

Binny shoukd be given chance as allrounder in intl matches rather than the useless Jadeja. Binny is showing consistent performance from last year.

If Sehwag, Gambhir, Tendulkar, M.S.Dhoni, Zaheer Khan, Suresh Raina are retained in the squad for the 1st test, then England is leading the 4 match series 1-0

raina should not be given chance,he is not test material.his capacity is hardly 135-140 and he wont make a century unless dropped twice or thrice..rohit should be told to focus only on tests and ipl.he can play all the day.we dont have any replacement of dhoni right now as everybody in the team is struggling barring kohli and pujara who are too young..irfan should be included he scored good score against england in warmups and scored a century in ranji trophy frm Baroda and picked two wickets..btw where is sreesanth?

team india should be! NO PLACE FOR DHONI IN TEST TEAM, 1)viru.... if fit .2)gauti.. 3)rahane..he is very talented, we must use their talent 4)SRT..5)kohli..6)pujara...7)parthiv..every body know he is much better than dhoni, 8)pathan...very good option for slow indian pitch, 9)leg spiner..must play a legspiner against English, 10)ashvin...11)yadav..and other three is pankaj, raina, binny,

yuvi has got many chance, he have't temprament for first class, if someone looks his double then why not look jadhav's double, zak and ishant are not ready for test, sory for manoj, badri, mukund,

I can read all kind of weird XI suggestions here ... so here is mine too. 1. Gambhir (Going through a bad patch bat India should remain invested in him. He is a Gem) 2. Rahane (It will be quite rubbish if Sehwag denies this guy with his poor form, poor fielding and poor attitude) 3. Pujara 4. Sachin (Better than Manoj Tiwary but should make way for him sooner or later) 5. Kohli 6. Yuvraj (Prone to spinners, but can bowl well and england is not known for spinners anyway) 7. Dhoni (He is still far better than the alternatives we have) 8. Ashwin (He is phenomenal) 9. PK (I don't understand what keeps him out) 10. Zaher 11. Ojha (Need better spinner though) ... Bench Manoj Tiwari, Rahul Sharma, Umesh Yadav and Karthik/Parthiv/Saha (doesn't matter anyway)

Posted by himohan007 on (November 5, 2012, 4:31 GMT)

@Wicky Our veteran Yuvi is better batsman, bowler, fielder than ur over hyped young Umar Akmal who is in the team because of the PCB rules that " Atleast one of the Akmal brothers should be in the team."

Big mistake yuvrav can't play quick seam bowling. Why us sachin still there, time to move on.

Posted by satish619chandar on (November 5, 2012, 4:12 GMT)

The guys who pick themselves in the 11 : Gambhir, Pujara, Kohli, Sachin, Dhoni, Ashwin, Ojha, Umesh. The guys who will get in surely if fit, Viru and Zak. Backup opener should be Rahane and the backup for Zak should be a choice between Dinda and Irfan with Irfan having a upper hand with experience and is also batting beautifully now. If Irfan plays, the No.6 slot would go to Yuvi as he can provide backup to the spinning option as Irfan is not as good as Zak in all stages of game as a bowler. Pick Irfan and Dinda as 12 and 13 with Tiwary and Raina as substitute fielders. Tiwary can always get in at 6 if someone is injured.

Leg spinnder is a must against England...English are known weak players of leg spin bolwling...

Posted by Aatish_Ahire on (November 5, 2012, 3:42 GMT)

My Xi, 1. Shewag/Gambhir 2. Rahane 3. Pujara 4. Sachin 5. Kohli 6. Yuvi 7. Parthiv Patel 8. Pathan 9. Ashwin 10. Ojha 11. Uadav

other 12. Binny 13. Pankaj Singh 14. Dhawan 15. Tiwary

No place for Dhoni in team & so play ranji. Bhajji has to prove in ranji Zak to get it fitness back & automatic selection. Kohli or parthiv as captain.

Posted by SoverBerry2 on (November 5, 2012, 3:40 GMT)

It is strange that all people (who wanted Rohit out from ODIs) want Yuvraj in the Test setup. He had enough chances to prove himself.!!

Posted by ADI_GUNGALIYA_FANTASY on (November 5, 2012, 3:26 GMT)

Players I am impressed with in ranji are till now, P Patel (162 runs + 80 runs) I Pathan (121 + 33* + 2 wickets) U Yadav ( 5 wickets + 2 wickets) Sachin (137 runs) Pankaj Singh ( 5 wkt + 3 wkt) Praveen kumar (3 WKt + 51* runs) Binny ( 5 wkt + 55 runs + 1 wicket)

Seeing parthiv i doubt whether dhoni to consider or not.

Selector should consider the performance here. Ojha, binny & ashwin 3 spinner i would consider. Parthiv as keeper Irfan, yadav & pankaj 3 fast bowler Shewag & Rahane as opener Sachin, Pujara & Yuvi as other.

My Playing XII is .........1) Rahane 2) Gambhir 3) Virat 4) SRT 5) Pujara 6) Dhoni 7) Yuvi 8) Ashwin 9) ojha 10) Yadav 11) ishant ...... zaheer and viru is unfit its blessing in disguse ... its good opportunity for young rahane and ishant ( he is dark horse)

India should consider finding new batsmen who can bat anywhere irrespective of pitch conditions or at least Tendulkar should teach his team mates how to bat outside Asia. Once Tendulkar retires that will leave a bunch of flat track hitters with no hope otherwise.

Posted by GerrardLK on (November 5, 2012, 1:53 GMT)

Does he have batting techniques to play even 4 day cricket? He's just a slogger & still considered for test. India's bowling is anyway below average. Now it's their bating too.

Posted by Naresh28 on (November 4, 2012, 23:45 GMT)

Indias bowling resources are dwindling fast. We cannot dream of replacing Zaks - our last wicket taking bowler. BCCI needs to invest in this aspect. Since Kumble retired we fail to find an apt replacement spinner.Taking twnty wickets is now a big problem. We relie on helpful conditions to win games. Yadav bowls fast but fails to take wickets We will never develop good bowlers unless we have a variety of pitches. Years ago I read about a bowler called Abid Nabi (Northern Light) - he still languishes in the domestic league. Kumble, Dravid, and ? need to be assigned the job of scouting for talent. While our bowling takes a back seat, our batting talent grows in leaps and bounds. Hence we are not able to win matches We seem to make do with what meagre resources we have, Having a 4 bowler policy is no longer viable.

Posted by bonobo on (November 4, 2012, 23:33 GMT)

Yuvraj has been a gifted player, who has never fulfilled his talent at the highest level for a long time now. Like a lot of Indian players, the short ball has undermined him overseas. What is disappointing is that he never seems to have addressed this. A lot of players have simply learnt to get out the way, even though it reduces their attacking options. He was the one, who I think for a long time people were looking to fill the void of the slow departure of the Fab 4. He is what 31 or 32 now? he is in great form with bat and ball, is always a great fielder, if he is not going to become a test player now, then never. So I think India have to back him, and I know its a home series, but if he doesnt get through this, then we know there is no hope of taking him to Safrica. He has also gone through quite an extreme experience with his health, maybe lets hope it has focused him, because he is really such an entertaining talent (and I am an England fan) the series is better with him

My XI .. 1) Rahane 2) Gambhir 3) Pujara 4) SRT 5) Kohli 6) Yuvi 7) Dhoni 8) Ashwin 9) Zaheer 10) Yadav 11) harbhjan singh This 11 will b more than enough for england ,

Posted by   on (November 4, 2012, 21:31 GMT)

i don't agree with most of you'll on selection this would be my team 1) gambhir 2)kohli 3)pujara 4)sahin (until he does not retire) 5)shewag 6)dhoni 7)irfan 8)ashwin 9)bhaji/ojha 10 ) zaheer/ishant 11) umeshand if sahin decides to retire move shewag up and yuvi to 5 irfan needs to play in any condition

Posted by anparhdehaati on (November 4, 2012, 20:48 GMT)

@Sanatanu Tripathy: Ashwin is pretty good in test matches and especially in India. He has 49 wickets in 8 tests. If he takes one wicket in next 2 matches, he will be quickest Indian bowler to reach 50 wickets. I am big Harbhajan fan, but to be honest Ashwin is leading the Indian spin scene. I would have preferred Harbhajan over Ojha, given Harbhajan's batting, but Ojha being left armer would add variety, and is good bowling form and could be the weapon agaisnt Pietersen.

In my post below - I did not select Zaheer, Sehwag and Yuvi as they need to prove their fitness. Yuvi should have played for Punjab to prove his fitness like all the other players did. Harbhajan and Ishant need to prove their form before they are considered. Badrinath is unfortunate to miss out but his time is gone - his prime coincided with the fab 4, not his fault but not the present selectors fault either.

Posted by aryan-is-dravid-fan on (November 4, 2012, 20:39 GMT)

Here is my squad - giving importance to Ranji form in last couple of years and A tours plus performance for India recently: Openers - Gambhir and Mukund (both deserve limited opportunities with an example of dropping Sehwag to let them know performance counts. Middle Order - Pujara, Kohli, Tendulkar, Raina (last 2 chances on home soil to perform if selected in 11) and M Tiwari. WK - Dhoni (only because he is captain - not performance based) - I would have Saha instead ideally. Spinners - Ashwin, Ohja (both in 11) and Harmeet or Abdulla as 3rd spinner - we dont play 3 spinners anymore but exposure for one of the youngsters would be good. Allrounder - I Pathan. Pacers - Zaheer needs to prove fitness for me to have him - so has to be Umesh, Pankaj and Parveen Kumar. My back-ups are: Dhawan (opener), Kaif (middle order) Saha (my wk), S Binny (allrounder), and Nehra (pace). Rahane not selected as opener for not opening in Ranji - needs to bat at the position he will be selected for!!

yuvraj is not a test material....any player who is vulnerable at giving catches to slip fielders cant be a test material like yuvraj, gambhir. bring solid classical players like rahane, pujara, badri, rohit. manoj is also not a test material.

Posted by   on (November 4, 2012, 20:15 GMT)

If Badrinath is not included in the squad, then it is the saddest day for Indian Cricket. Not because Badri's presence will turn over things but his absence will tell a very shameful story about Indian cricket to the rest of the world.

Posted by   on (November 4, 2012, 20:11 GMT)

In my opinion...the first XI should be like this.... 1. Sehwag 2. Gambhir 3. Kohli 4. Sachin 5.Yuvraj 6.Pujara 7.Dhoni 8.Harbhajan 9. Zaheer 10.Yadav 11.Ojha....... Ashwin is never a good test off spinner...he is okay for T20 and one day...he need to learn how to flight the ball and how to ball in test matches..he needs to bowl much slower...yes he was match of the series for last three series in sub continent....but anyone can bowl spin on sub continent pitch....what about abroad....see his records there....Rahul sharma should be kept along with Ashwin as reserve spinners....

Yuvraj, Manoj Tiwary, even Mohd. Kaif deserve a shot at no.6 position - Raina is simply not test material. Among the bowlers - Imtiaz Ahmed of UP deserves a chance. He recently took 5 wickets in an innings against a star studded Delhi side comprising of Viru, Gauti, Kohli, Manhas, etc. He is a well built bowler in the mold of Yadav. Among the spinners, please try a youngster like Aparajith or Iqbal Abdulla instead of old horse Bhajji.

@insidehegde : Perhaps u are not following domestic cricket. Badri is scoring tonnes of runs in domestic circuit for years(this season is yet to kick off) ... U give him just a couple of odi's to show his worth ? why not back him the same way as rohit sharma (who simply gets into the team coz of 'amazing talent' and not of performance) and raina(who fails against quality pace bowling ..) ..

Its not just badrinath , wat abt tiwary ?? he is also unk]lucky tpp..

By mistake, I pick a wrong name "Ganguly" instead of "Gambhir"in my below post :). The correct staement is "Gambhir need to battle against his recent struggles, but he needs to be an opener always." . Another argument to suport Sehwag as No: 6 is, in that position somebody has to be a game changer and Sehwag is an excellent choice as a game changer.

Here we go again, the Badrinath supporters come out of the woodwork. It's real simple - when was the last time he played a meaningful first-class innings? What did he achieve on the tour to Windies in 2011?

Score runs and your name will be in the selector's thoughts. Yuvraj has a double ton, and five wicket haul as a bowler to boot, with his charisma and the ability to lift the team's spirits, no-one should be surprised that he's well on his way to a comeback. As the article states, Rahane has scored a 50 and a ton in the last few days. Badri? Nada. End of.

Why not Sehwag to come at No:6? In my opinion, No:6 should be a good player of spin and a good player of new ball that is taken after 80 overs. Sehwag fit that bill better than anybody else. Ganguly need to battle against his recent struggles, but he needs to be an opener always. My team is: 1. Mukund/Rahane 2. Gambhir 3. Pujara 4. Sachin (No other option till he retires) 5. Kohli 6. Sehwag 7. Dhoni 8. Ashwin 9. Zaheer Khan 10.Ojha 11. Yadav

I m glad to see yuvii.. but this should be his last opportunity for the test team. Leave Sewagh out and play Rahane.. My XI .. 1) Rahane 2) Gambhir 3) Pujara 4) SRT 5) Kohli 6) Yuvi 7) Dhoni 8) Ashwin 9) Zaheer 10) Yadav 11) Ojha.. This 11 will b more than enough for england and

Ashwin has sealed harbhajan career and is on his way to get 3rd consecutive man of the series at home. Go ashwin go, make England dance

Posted by   on (November 4, 2012, 17:19 GMT)

My team: Dhawan, Rahane, Pujara, Kohli, Tiwary, Yuvraj, Parthiv, Ashwin, Zaheer, Ojha, Yadav.

Dhawan and Yuvraj for left hander variety otherwise too many right handers makes it very predictable and easy for opposition bowlers to settle into a line.

I am very surprised with no one talking much about Badrinath here. He was the next in line after Raina in the previous series. With Raina faltering, Badrinath should be the next to get an oppurtunity, at least for 3-4 test matches. I don't know why people keep talking about age as a factor, he still has a solid 4-5 years of cricket left in him. Yuvraj needs to show more in the coming matches, have no idea how come Yuvraj becomes an automatic choice, i agree he scored a 200 as well a 50 against England, but he needs to keep performing..He did decently well in his two test matches, has a MOM in his only T20. He couldn't grab his oppurtunity in ODI's against WI, but then he was gfiven 3-4 matches only!! Sharma has played 85 odd with much more faliures. I was so sure that Badri would be given a chance in that WI series in test matches, but alas, Vijay, Mukund, Raina leapfrogged ahead for no obvious reasons. He will be the Brad Hodge of Indian cricket!!

There is no sense in picking a 15 man squad, especially when there is the Ranji trophy going on. I'd pick Rahane, Gambhir, Pujara, SRT, Kohli, Tiwary, Dhoni, Ashwin, Ojha, Umesh, Zaheer, and another spinner as the 12th man. That gives you options as well; your batting line up is more or less settled. I'd have Yuvi play another couple of first-class matches before he makes a comeback. Right now, we are high on emotions but we'd have wasted a major chance if we discover that after 4 matches, Yuvraj hasn't done anything substantial. Throw in Tiwary and Rahane right now and see how they perform.

Posted by Porky_PigTheToon on (November 4, 2012, 16:12 GMT)

UV is the best bet for Ind @ No. 6. If he plays he gives 5th genuine bowling option to Dhoni. Gauti, Viru, Pujara, SRT, Kohli, Yuvi, Dhoni, Irfan, Ashwin, ZaK, Ojha.

Amol, How can Harbhajan get in with his ZERO wkt. in the recent Ranji game & poor bowling over past 18 months? Indian list of spinners is already filled up, thank you. Ashwin, Ojha, Yuvraj, Rahul & Tiwary are the likely spinners chosen with an eye to the future. M.Kartik is the best left hand spinner but unfortunately he has been black listed for the unknown reasons!. India is in the rebuilding phase and needs to make a gradual transition for the individual greats. Pujara & Kohli will replace Dravid & Laxman. There are at least 4 openers Rahane, Dhawan,Mukund & Vijay waiting to replace Gambhir & Sehwag . Yadev, Ishant Sharma & Aaron are the new seamers. Yuvraj & Irfan Pathan - All rounders. Middle order batsmen-Tiwary, Raina, Rohit, U.Chand. WK: D.Karthik, Saha & Dhoni.Tendulkar, Gambhir,Sehwag &Zaheer will get a chance for 2 tests in this series to perform or retire. Likely XI: Gambhir, Sehwag, Kohli, Pujara, Tendulkar, Yuvraj,Dhoni, Ashwin, Irfan/ZAK, Yadev, Ojha/M.Kartik.

peeps tokin against dhoni are so unfair to our captain.....after pujara and kohli ..dhoni was 3rd highest run getter in the recent test series against averaging 91... i don't like raina in test squads, when real test cricketers like Tiwary, rahane have to sit out...raina should be out of the 15...and tiwary should be in ..yuvi should be made to play only after checking his match fitness...peeps like badri/kaif won't find place easily when peeps like rahane/tiwary/rohit have averaged about same and are younger..also its unfair to sehwag/gambhir who have fairly averaged about 30-35 in last 2 years..they're just not in the best of their forms. my squad against eng.. 1.Rahane2.Sehwag3.pujara 4.sachin 5.kohli 6.tiwary7.dhoni 8.ashwin 9.ojha 10. yadav 11.zaheer12.pankaj singh 13.gambhir 14.yuvi 15 bhajji/rahul sharma.. i am from mumbai but i wouldnt mind sachin being out of the side if he performs badly this series!..rahane isnt a natural opener and can bat anywhr if needed to!

Posted by citizenkc on (November 4, 2012, 15:46 GMT)

Prepare for a series of attrition and possible boredom. Neither of the two sides' bowling attacks look capable of taking 20 wickets, whereas the batting will manage to score big on what will be mostly dead pitches. India is not going to learn anything new from this series and the next time they tour, the same problems will remain. These are: Our openers are no longer the force that they used to be--Sehwag is on his way out and a liability of the field; Gambhir cannot play real pace India does not have a replacement for Sachin at number 4, unless that becomes Kohli's spot, but then who will play at 5? Zaheer is almost done. There is no one to replace him. The second pacer's spot is also in uncertain hands: Yadav, Ishant, etc. are prone to injury and do not match winning skills. Ashwin and Ojha have succeeded at home against NZ and WI. They have not been tested overseas, so we have no idea if we can count on them.

We can either stagnate or we can start getting serious about the future

Posted by SamRoy on (November 4, 2012, 15:37 GMT)

Yuvraj, never was a good test player and should not be picked as he is not ready enough for test cricket (it takes time to recover to recover properly from Cancer treatment). What will happen when he fails (more chance of him failing than succeding)? Bring Raina back, who is even worser. What happens when Raina fails? What happens then? Bring Yuvraj back again? Give others a chance, will you selectors? At least give Rohit Sharma a chance at test level. If Rohit Sharma doesn't play ODI cricket again he won't be missed. The only to see whether he belongs at test level is by playing him in test matches. ODI cricket is not test cricket. Then Dhoni would have been a great test player (which he is not).

selectors met in chennai to select india a squad. No wonder we find likes of vijayi in the team. glad he flopped. kick him out permenantly.

Posted by bistaumanga on (November 4, 2012, 15:22 GMT)

How can a player with average of 34 and 9 wickets after 37 test be picked for a test spot??? Its insane to keep talents like rahane, nayar, pujara, unmukt chand, manoj tiwary, parthiv patel etc to sideline for flop players like yuvraj and raina(in tests) and Rohit Sharma( in ODIs). Its injustice to these core to the young indian players. Look at Australia, how they sidelined Marcus North, Phil Huges etc even they they are losing matches because they are averaging below 40 and 40 is not enough for tests. Yes Yuvraj and Raina are good ODI & T20 players but they are not for tests.....

Posted by   on (November 4, 2012, 15:16 GMT)

What wrong has Badri done? You pick him, don't give him a chance; and then drop him. Both Yuvraj and Raina have got so many tests to prove themselves and their average is in the low 30s or even below. Should Badri not at least get a run of two clear series to provie (or disprove) himself? Guess some guys have all the luck and others all the bad luck.

Posted by Numerouno9 on (November 4, 2012, 15:06 GMT)

Looking at the current form of the players, yuvi should be picked for the no. 6 slot, he would be effective with the ball too.

Posted by rock_sumit on (November 4, 2012, 15:05 GMT)

Remove Gambhir and viru from Team (Also dhoni). Parthiv is best in these days.

Posted by   on (November 4, 2012, 15:00 GMT)

Johli & Yuvi: these are the ONLY two players, about whom one feel confident. All the rest come with some nagging doubt or other (including the Captain).

Posted by   on (November 4, 2012, 14:58 GMT)

Harbhajan: If his name is touted for a 3rd spinner's slot, it is a shame. We should give that slot to some of the young spinners like Abdulla or Appanna ( not because, their names start with an "A", but because of their potential.)

Posted by   on (November 4, 2012, 14:56 GMT)

Rahane: should be given a chance to open, along with Gauti ( minus Gauti's "poke-poke" business, and protection from the "influence" of Veeru)

Posted by   on (November 4, 2012, 14:53 GMT)

Sachin: Though I had been repeatedly clamoring for his honorable retirement, for a selfish reason, I wish they keep him just for the Ahmedabad test (I am Ahmedabad based, and would love to see him play an international test match one last time -- hopefully he will survive the first 31 balls he faces, and then unleash his array of strokes from the yester-years!)

Posted by   on (November 4, 2012, 14:49 GMT)

Veeru: Excellent opportunity for the selectors to "rest" him due to his "injury". Hopefully, he may return to the national team, a more responsible player, changing his line "that is the way I play" to "That is the way I play for my team". Hopefully, it may also make Gauti, be more careful with his "poking" and giving catching practice to the slip cordon.

the team will be 1.gambhir 2.sehwag 3.pujara 4.sachin 5.kohli 6.yuvraj 7.raina 8.dhoni 9.ashwin 10.ojha 11.zaheer 12.umesh 13.ishant 14.rahane 15.harbhajan

Though i feel shikhar dhawan should also be rewarded... He has been outstanding... N if gambhir is ever replaced, dhawan should be selected.

Posted by   on (November 4, 2012, 14:28 GMT)

If Harbhajan Singh is taken then the selectors should be taken to court. If past or present form is taken as criterion for selection Harbhajan singh will no way pass the bench mark. Let the selectors go for a rookie spinner he will be far better than Harbhajan

Posted by ambrishsundaram on (November 4, 2012, 14:16 GMT)

I would much rather include Amit Mishra in the playing XI than Harbhajan Singh. England have generally exhibited a weakness against leg-spinners. Mishra may not be in the best form and when in form may not be a huge threat against other sides, but he is a decent legspinner and should be able to prey on the doubts in the minds of the English batsmen. My preferred 14 member squad: One of Sehwag or Gambhir, Rahane, Dhawan, Pujara, Kohli, Tendulkar, Yuvraj, Dhoni, Pathan, Mishra, Ashwin, Zaheer, Yadav, Ojha.

Posted by   on (November 4, 2012, 14:14 GMT)

2 spinners with part-timers like YV,VIRU,SACHIN will be enough for spin bowling department against England....

Posted by   on (November 4, 2012, 14:12 GMT)

1. Virender Sehwag 2. Gautam Gambhir/Ajinkya Rahane 3. Chateshwar Pujara 4.Sachin Tendulkar/Rohit Sharma 5. Virat Kohli 6. Muhammad Kaif/Yuvraj Singh/Rehane 7.Dhoni 8. Ashwin 9. Pragyan Ojha 10. Rahul Sharma/Umesh/Irfan Pathan 11. Zaheer Khan. If Gambhir continues his poor form, Rehane should replace Gambhir. If Gambhir hits form, Rehane should play down the order, and probably ahead of Yuvraj Singh. Muhammad Kaif is the best bet for No. 6 position, or may be even no.5. If Yuvraj Singh makes to the eleven, India should play two spin bowlers, and two pace bowlers. Yuvraj Singh is as good a bowler as Harbhajan Singh or even better. If Yuvraj Singh does not make it to the XI, then India should play three spinners and Zaheer Khan. Rohit Sharma should replace Tendulkar whenever he retires.

Why not in expense of Raina than poor Badri? but I am counting on Sandeep Patil to do right thing.

Posted by   on (November 4, 2012, 13:55 GMT)

At least one of the two openers(sehwag or gambhir) should be replaced by Rahane ...

Why we need Harbhajan in squad. . . We are playing in India and no need of 4 men sitting in bench

Posted by Raj12345 on (November 4, 2012, 13:44 GMT)

Amol Karhadkar - respected writer, you are so interested making Yuvi into Team. Not sure why.

Posted by SJCfan_cricket on (November 4, 2012, 13:40 GMT)

Why nobody is talking about Manoj Tiwari. He has performed well and is yet to get a chance in the test squad. He has to sit most of the times in the dressing room as the other so called talented players has to be given chance.

I can foresee Rehane's career going down the same path as Badrinath's! It is unfortunate but that's just the way things go. One could argue that it is partly the own fault of the 'unlucky' players - look at the disparity between Rehane's Ranji trophy and List A averages. Similarly, Badrinath has also fallen everytime he was give an opportunity to set up. That's just the way things go!

Posted by bramville on (November 4, 2012, 13:30 GMT)

selecting a team for an home series should not be such an herculain task for the selectors, because every Indian player is accoustomed to the playing conditions in India, so its no big deal to select a team for an home series

Posted by rahulcricket007 on (November 4, 2012, 13:23 GMT)

if the selctors wants to give any tight message to players then this is the right time . we saw how in ranji matches & practice matches pujara scored runs , rahane hit a 100 , mukund made a decent 73 in practice match against england . now compare these performances to our senior openrs gambhir & sehwag , these both have again get out after 30 -40 runs against UP , sehwag is carrying an injury . please at least drop sehwag from the first test match . same goes in the bowling department . ISHANT SHARMA IS STRUGGLING TO TAKE WKTS EVEN AGAINST RANJI TEAMS . today he gave 90 runs & picked just 2 wkts with an economy of 3.65 . he should not be selected . A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR HIS REPLACMENT CAN BE PANKAJ SINGH WHO IS TAKING WKTS IN 5 WKT HAULS FROM LAST 2 RANJI SEASONS , EVEN IN THE CURRENT MATCH AGAINST BENGAL HE HAS TAKEN 8 WKTS ALREADY FROM 15 WKT OF BENGAL .the guy is a class , HE SHOULD DEFINITELY BE GIVEN AT LEAST ONE CHANCE TO PROVE HIMSELF .

Posted by IndiaNumeroUno on (November 4, 2012, 13:15 GMT)

Why is Badrinath "unlucky"? As far as I recall he has never made a statement of intent as a challenger to be a part of the final 11. Temperament, hunger and performance matters - and Rahane has shown much more of it than Badri.

Posted by QingdaoXI on (November 4, 2012, 13:12 GMT)

The likely Squad should be as follows: MS Dhoni (Cap and Wk), Gambhir, Rahane, Pujara, Sachin, Kohli, Yuvraj, Ashwin, Ojha, Praveen, Umesh, Pankaj, Tiwary. Select only playing XI and 1-2 for back, when playing India when domestic tournament is going on no need to selct a squad of 15 if they will not get chance to play, and on match day after playing XI is announced free the reserve players to play for his state side so he will have enough match practice when he will join the team if needed. Sehwag and Zaheer should be rested for first 2 test due to there injury as well as form concern and after playing extra 2-3 matches in Ranji they will definately come good till that board can do expt for opening batsmen as well for fast bowler slot. If Gambhir still fails to deliver after 2 tests drop him and make him play ranji and make Sehwag and Rahen open. So in this way we can expt Rahane if he comes good Sehwag/ Gambhir will come under pressure and may start delivering once again.

Posted by ADI_GUNGALIYA_FANTASY on (November 4, 2012, 13:04 GMT)

Posted by cricsom5667 on (November 4, 2012, 13:03 GMT)

The XI in order of batting should be - 1) Gambhir 2) Sehwag 3) Pujara 4) Tendulkar 5) Virat 6) Yuvraj 7) Dhoni 8) Ashwin 9) Praveen Kumar 10) Harmeet Singh 11) Pankaj Singh. Alternatives - In case Sehwag is unfit, Rahane should be considered. In case Yuvraj is unfit, Sehwag should drop to 6) and be replaced by Rahane as opener. Other alternatives for pace department are Umesh Yadav & Ishant. Murli Karthik could be considered as well as he can serve up a good bag of tricks for unnerving the English.

Posted by TSJ07 on (November 4, 2012, 13:02 GMT)

If you r selected Yuvi then I guess you are going to to cement your place if test eleven. All the best Yuvi!!

Though the five new selectors met in Chennai on October 24 to pick the India A squad for last week's tour opener in what was their first formal selection meet, this will be the first time they will announce a Test squad after taking over from Kris Srikkanth's panel at the beginning of last month.

Posted by roversgate on (November 4, 2012, 12:48 GMT)

I know Yuvraj adds a lot of value as a bowler and a test batsmen with experience of travelling everywhere but I dont necessarily agree with the decision. His reward for the way he is playing is a return to the ODI squad despite his replacement (Tiwary) having done well. I would really prefer to see Rahane open with Gambhir and drop Sehwag to #6.

Posted by at_affu on (November 4, 2012, 12:48 GMT)

BCCI please dont go with previous records of the players & Good that YUVI is making a come back in team india test cricket,But we need Ajinkya Rahane to b in playing 11, he is such a talented cricketer in domestic for last 4 years. Its better to rest Gambhir, so that he can play the complete Ranji season and get back to form.
