As expected, Yuvraj Singh has been named in the squad for the first two Tests against England, starting November 15. Harbhajan Singh was also recalled while Suresh Raina was dropped. M Vijay was included as the third specialist opener in the squad of 15, with Ajinkya Rahane as a middle-order batsman.

The first national selection meeting of the newly-appointed panel, headed by Sandeep Patil at the Cricket Centre in Mumbai, also attended by the captain MS Dhoni, didn't last long. While it was announced earlier that only the first Test squad would be selected, the selectors picked the squad for the first two Tests.

While Yuvraj has proven his fitness for the rigours of Test cricket over the last month after recovering from a germ cell cancer, Harbhajan was selected for his experience and lack of options once Piyush Chawla failed to recover from a thumb injury.

Yuvraj last featured in a Test in November 2011, (against the West Indies in Mumbai). The fact that Raina, who scored a half-century in the second Test against New Zealand in Bangalore, has been replaced by Vijay as the reserve opener clearly indicates that the selectors are looking at Ajinkya Rahane more as a middle-order batsman than as an opening option.

"We have selected three openers, not four," Patil told the BCCI website. "Ajinkya Rahane has been picked as a middle-order batsman. We have tried to provide the captain and the team management with a backup option for all departments. We have an extra spinner, top-order batsman, middle-order batsman and pacer."

India squad for first two Tests

  • MS Dhoni (capt & wk), Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Cheteshwar Pujara, R Ashwin, Umesh Yadav, Pragyan Ojha, Ajinkya Rahane, Harbhajan Singh, Ishant Sharma, M Vijay, Zaheer Khan

Harbhajan, who last played a Test during the 2011 England tour, was included despite an ordinary start to the Ranji Tropy season. He went wicketless in 21 overs in the first innings for Punjab against Hyderabad, but picked up three wickets in the second. Harbhajan was recalled for the World Twenty20, where he turned in a match-winning 4 for 12 against England. He was not considered for Test selection by the previous selection panel following the England tour.

Asked whether the selectors had any specific long-term goal for the team, Patil said "No, we're going match by match and series by series. Every match is going to be important and we want the Indian team to do well in each of those matches. Let's not talk about the season ahead of us but this series against England that is coming up."

The only bone of contention for the selectors was to check Zaheer Khan's fitness status. The left-arm seamer had left the field with discomfort on Monday during Mumbai's Ranji Trophy game against Railways and underwent a fitness test. Minutes after the National Cricket Academy physiotherapist Ashish Kaushik submitted his report to the selection panel, the selectors finalised the squad.

@VijayHaters - Can any one list all the matches played by him for India with the scores and Please check the gaps between the games he got. Also, how many were last minute replacements for our so called BIG openers !!!

When guys like Nohit Sharma get so many opps, Vijay purely deserves this chance. Unfortunately, he may not get a game due to our so called BIG openers !!! I wish Sehwag / Gambhir get injured ... Also look at their scores against UP in the local game.... really funny....

@Rumy1 bhaai..ye 21st century h..kahan aap 20th century k players k naam le rahe ho..Kaif,waseem jaffer, stuart binny ...nd badrinath is good player bt i think he lacks some skills in fielding

Posted by Mohit Kalal on (November 8, 2012, 2:41 GMT)

haha...murali vijay,i would rather prefer munaf patel in his place..i think he can bat well thn our 'highly talented murali vijay' ,peace of crap :D

Posted by   on (November 7, 2012, 18:54 GMT)

stop blaming only gambhir&sewag see the others record including kohli also not performing to the expectation level.these r the critical time for them but our batsmens will perform well again, our bowling is still in worse condition, where is RPsingh, praveen, varon aaron,,sree shant or we have to introduce some new FAST bowlers.stop blaming ishant an excellent bowler searching for his recoganisation.we have to cement up our middle order with players like kaif, badri etc whohave some experience &then go for yuvraj, pujara, rahne as middle order, but rahane should keep as the reserve opener instead of vijay.tiwary should adds as the reserve m.order batsmen.this is the time to create some young fast bowlers.stop giving chances to medium pacer vinay kumar in test.keep pathan as all rounder&medium pacer.chances to rohit, vijay, are not waste, keep rotating them.keep rotating PUJARA,KOHLI,GAMBIR as 1down.my 15 wil include badri, kaif, insted of vijay, rahane/yuvi good luck india well done to be back!

I think Ravi Kiran would have done a wonderful job than harbhajan in the team... Harbhajans inclusion would have helped England to gain their confidence back.. overall a very poor selection...No middle order stability found in the team.. Can some 1 explain me for what has been Harhajan selected for? I wouldnt be surprised if I see England win the series..

Ishant and Bhajji are big mistakes - why not try Pankaj Singh or Imtiaz Ahmed inplace of Ishant, and Iqbal Abdulla or Aparajith in place of Bhajji?

Posted by saidai-bhaski001 on (November 7, 2012, 12:46 GMT)

Hey.. 50 god & 50 bad in selection.. Re-enter Yuvi & Bajji good, Drop Raina & given chance to vijay really unworthful... Y not go with Praveen ? Pujara & pathan..... little disapponting selection :(

Posted by loki_rockz on (November 7, 2012, 7:37 GMT)

This is very sad bcoz not of yuvi & bajji are back. It is for vijay again and agian he is getting chances, instead of him they could have taken raina. Vijay is the worst batsman i ever seen. I think selectors this one member to squad made me so disappointed. Plz sack him from the squad. And even instead of shewag the options for raina getting into squad.

Posted by   on (November 7, 2012, 6:19 GMT)

Why Ishant Sharma, we have Dinda or Pathan as third seamer. Or Vijay for what place? opener? already three in the squad. Last squad had Badri as Middle order. So, Badri or Tiwary was justified. Bad work by new panel.

Posted by Indian_Cricket_Fanatic on (November 7, 2012, 5:14 GMT)

Apart from the batting selection does anyone know why praveen kumar has been dropped from the indian test squad? he was india's highest wicket taker in test series against WI and in England in 2011....fair enoough had injuries and then he was alright...why isn't he considered again when the likes of ishant and zaheer arn't performing ?...

Posted by JustIPL on (November 6, 2012, 23:26 GMT)

Too many spinners in Indian side. Fast bowling has to be good also. On the other hand Swann, Panesar, Patel all can bowl competitive spin and are highly expected to settle down through the series. Ashwin, Bhajji, Yuvraj, Ojha will also be tough to face. No doubt India are stronger in this area. To balance it out England's batting has edge over India after the retirement of some key batsmen from Indian side. Therefore, I expect a keenly contested series and time will prove if Indian spinners prove to be the difference b/w triumph and defeat.

Posted by Rumy1 on (November 6, 2012, 18:18 GMT)

The team for first two Tests should have been a mix of experience, youthful energy and talent. It should have read like this....Wasim Jaffer, Ajinkya Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara, Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Mohd.Kaif, S.Badrinath, Manoj Tiwary, MS Dhoni, Harbhajan Singh, Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav, Pragyan Ojha, Harmeet Singh and Stuart Binny. Dhoni must play Bhajji by replacing his favorite Ashwin in XI.

Posted by Rumy1 on (November 6, 2012, 18:08 GMT)

Surprised that selectors have stuck with Gambhir and Sehwag who average 30 in Tests over the last two years. Gambhir has no century to boast of in the last 2 years while Sehwag has only one. What a shame that a guy like Vijay has got the nod ahead of much talented, classy, accomplished and experienced Wasim Jaffer who is ignored again and again.Another one ignored here is Mohd.Kaif who just struck a masterful 91 against Delhi. Kaif and his folks yesterday outplayed strong Delhi which had Sehwag, Gambhir, Kohli and Unmukt Chand besides likes of Ishant Sharma and Ashish Nehra. Both Jaffer and Kaif are 32 only. If Sachin can play at 39, and if Sehwag can at 33 then why not Kaif and Jaffer. Another unlucky chap is Badrinath. He is a much better Test batsman than Yuvraj, Gambhir and Kohli. Selectors did well to reinstate Bhajji. He is a class act and much better than Ashwin. Dhoni must play Bhajji. Good that Umesh and Ishant are back. Ishant is a special talent. Zaheer should have been rested

Why am I not picked in the team? I write comments here constantly:):):)

@raj_che: exaaaactly!!! Awwww.....Vijay!!!!

bhajji in and raina out? was dhoni really really (one more) REALLY involved in the selection?? :)

Posted by fan_2_fans on (November 6, 2012, 14:20 GMT)

Suresh Raina should be in the team,M. Vijay has been given enough chances in the past and still he hasent proved himself.

Posted by dork29 on (November 6, 2012, 14:17 GMT)

Drop Sachin, he can play for Australia. After all they honoured him.

Posted by   on (November 6, 2012, 14:16 GMT)

Instead of Sewag and Bhajj, who were out of form for the past 1 year +, one/ two from the victorious under 19 should have been considered. It is a pity that though Sewag possessed plenty of natural talent, could not see reasons for his failures and work for. If he is not seeing means to overcome now, then when? Seeing the form, Irfan Pathan should have been considered.

Posted by Raj12345 on (November 6, 2012, 14:01 GMT)

When Yuvi was included based one 200 in Domestic, then why not Vijay who scored 200,100 & 93 recently in Domestic. Also Yuvi played more tests than Vijay. Also Yuvi not performed well in the past and it is not case with Vijay who failed in few tests and given not consistent opening opportunity.

Posted by couchpundit on (November 6, 2012, 13:55 GMT)

@mnkgpt - Praveen kumar is a player who will break down in middle / start of the game....check his record.

Posted by   on (November 6, 2012, 13:46 GMT)

muruli vijay ?? u serious :\

Posted by couchpundit on (November 6, 2012, 13:38 GMT)

@phunny_game - i guess you missed the selection explanation by a distance.....Rahane is backup middle order batsman, harbhajan is backup spinner.

If dhoni brings in Harbhajan at the expense of Ashwin or Ohja...then he is to be blamed and not selectors. Given current dhoni's mind set(which is loosers mindset in stark contrast to what he was a year ago) he will not dare to bring harbhajan.

I dont understand why Vijay is brought as backup opener...it should have been mukund. Mukund and rahane was the only good thing in last england tour. Vijay(beyond indian pitches) is good for nothing Mukund is better player and should be groomed for future.

Posted by Hammond on (November 6, 2012, 13:38 GMT)

India really is the underdog here. Hope the squad does well against a superior England test squad.

Posted by raj_che on (November 6, 2012, 13:19 GMT)

@Pushan001 - if Vijay shuld not have been selected for just one good inning then how about our beloved Yuvraj singh. he scores just one double century in the duleep trophy and just walks into the team. do you think that is fair?? just stop this nonsense of CSK players getting selected, tell me how many CSK players r there in this team?? just 2..so you would want the selectors to drop Ashwin or Dhoni?? and you need a backup opener and who else other than Vijay?? Does anybody even think about how many players r there from Delhi...yes its 4 and another 2 from Punjab which makes it 6 out of 14.....so can i call this a north dominated team???

Posted by PravinJP10 on (November 6, 2012, 13:06 GMT)

If M.Vijay failed in WI tour, what about Sachin's performance in Eng and Aus??? If M.Vijay suppose to be dropped from the team so as sachin, Gambhir and Zak. Don't look at past glory of the player and speak....,

Posted by   on (November 6, 2012, 13:01 GMT)

It is indeed a pity that Sachin's Son did not get a chance in the Indian team for the first Test against England. He played along side his father in the "Nets" and really wanted to impress the Selectors!!!! The Press also took valuable time in photographing his play but unfortunately could not get a chance!!!!!

@phunny_game,,,,, well said abt rahul dravid, i like this line very much (Everybody cannot be Rahul dravid) in england the god was afraid to open the inning, he doing that in odi,,, the wall done,,,, hat's of to dravid,,, now comeing to series, i dont care who playing, in end of the series we need 4-0 win that is all the best india & yuvi

Posted by k.vijayasankar on (November 6, 2012, 12:18 GMT)

Hats off to new selection panel. An opener who is not selected to an A tour to NewZeland is Indians reserve opener. Ajinkya Rahane dont know what he is. He is opener for Mumbai but Middle Order Batsman for Indian Team. Just look at the recent record of Ajinkya Rahane in Westindies A tour. He failed miserably facing lanky WestIndian A team fast bowlers. So Sandip Patil should feel he is good at middle order. So what is Manoj Tiwari then? His only problem is he is not from Tamil Nadu or Mumbai. Vijay is not good enough to be selected to Indian A team but he is good to be selected for Indian team. Great stuff from new selectors. It is a new news that Ajinkya Rahane is a middle order batsman. But dear all selectors what ever you guys do nor Vijay or Ajinkya Rahane will going to be suceed as players. For that you have to go to fast bowlers around the world and tell them to bowl slow to these kids. Sorry Manoj Tiwari you are not a good middle order batsman.

Posted by   on (November 6, 2012, 12:07 GMT)

I am sure ki sehwag will gonna score runs in the first test (probably a 100 +). but the problem will arise after that. If u look at sehwag's history, whenever he has a good inning under his belt in the recent past, he doesn't bother about the match situation, he just keep on playing his ridiculous shots and finding easiest ways to get out. ...... where was his natural game when he played the T20 world cup match against Pakistan(29 off 25 balls), & where was his natural game when he made a 150 plus score (off 260 balls) against Australia (4th test match in australia) in 2008. In both those innings he was trying to gain his place back into the Indian team. WHENEVER SEHWAG IS SURE ABOUT HIS PLACE IN THE TEAM, HE PLAY RIDICULOUS SHOTS saying that I WAS PLAYING MY NATURAL GAME.

Posted by phunny_game on (November 6, 2012, 11:55 GMT)

I think harbhajan shouldn't play. Ashwin and Ojha have been bowling well in tandem, and a third spinner is not required with yuvraj being an automatic selection for the tests.

Posted by parthaacs on (November 6, 2012, 11:51 GMT)

one thing is very clear from these comments is how divided and difficult is selecting team India.. every one wants a player from their region or state etc over a player from another region or state! so whatever the selection committee do, we will always be fighting over few players!! I am from chennai, so i have no problem with Vijay in the team when you can have gambhir (who only play against lanka) and bhajji... if vijay is in team because of csk influence then why badri wasn't there? why was he not given fair amount of chances compared to so many others?

indian team was never about merit.. it was always about influence - we indians know it.. so why whinge or angry about it!

Posted by phunny_game on (November 6, 2012, 11:50 GMT)

I guess everyone here thinks rahane is an opener... He is not an opener. Even for mumbai he usually bats at 3 or 4. So how can he be the reserve opener... How can you expect him to open at international level, when even sachin tendulkar can't do that... Everybody cannot be Rahul dravid !!!

Posted by Cricket_Critics on (November 6, 2012, 11:32 GMT)

England as Bowling & Feilding Unit look far better than India and talking about rank turners will only make India digging their own GRAVE. i dont feel Ishant/Yadav/Ojha/Ashwin who i think sure for 1st test will trouble english batsman untill batsman them self play some self destructive Shots like they did against Indian in WT20.Also not to forget this English Team is better than NZL or WI when they toured India and gave the Indians some trouble by dragging the games more than India expected. Also not to forget India is a team which expects opposition to make mistakes rather than been proactive to make them commit one.

Posted by mnkgpt on (November 6, 2012, 11:18 GMT)

vijay had got the benifit of csk's player and also selection of ishant is also strange. i mean why selectors didnt consider praveen kumar or irfan pathan mainly irfan. an allrounder is always better than bowler.. irfan is really consistent after the last test series..

Posted by   on (November 6, 2012, 11:16 GMT)

problem is, we indians have a problem in 'letting go'. once a player establishes his place, then he plays for all eternity, even if he is dropped once in a while. we keep swapping players like its a country of only 100 humans and we dont have choices.all new players have to score in 1 or 2 matches and anyone who amazingly does this feat, stays forever! Wonder how many gr8 players lost out due to this 'sticking on to existing players forever' policy. just cant believe the pampering some players receive forever! my poor country suffers.

Posted by svel on (November 6, 2012, 10:58 GMT)

everyone r talking about vijay's selection... atleast he has done decently of late with double century with rajastan and a century against india A... but what has harbajan singhji done to deserve a place... even rohit sharma spins the ball more than him ;) y don any of u talk about this???

Posted by MOHDsarfaraz on (November 6, 2012, 10:42 GMT)

Only problem in the team is M Vijay, it should be M Tiwari why everybody knows , and easiest way to be selected for team India if u r in Chennai super kings, u will definatly got your chances, hard luck M Tiwari,u can try for chennai super kings selection,Jai hind

Some comments made me laugh. @pavan.adapa, Tiwary better spinner than Ojha? This isn't T20. I wouldn't compare Bajji's and Ishanth's track record as Ste13 did. Ishanth was very good in England and Australia. Batsmen respected him and avoided playing shots in his bowling. Other bowlers did not take advantage of the pressure he added. Bajji has been pulling of all the pressure. Ishanth should be in. Pushan001's comment, preferring Dinda over Ishanth makes no sense to me. I would prefer Raina over Vijay (Rahane as backup opener).

Posted by rkannancrown on (November 6, 2012, 10:17 GMT)

Picking such a big squad for a home series is pathetic. It should have been restricted to 12 or max 13 players. A player is better off playing Ranji than warming the benches. With the first XI selecting itself, what purpose will having Vijay, Bhajji, Ishant & Rahane in the squad serve ?

Posted by   on (November 6, 2012, 10:01 GMT)

Good luck for Indian team .Hope atleast they will draw series

Posted by surveakshay31 on (November 6, 2012, 9:28 GMT)

why not tiwary????i don't think vijay deserves a chance

Posted by chaituaddanki on (November 6, 2012, 9:05 GMT)

Once again Manoj Tiwary feels the heat despite of his superb form.Ajinkya Rahane could be a reserve opener and Manoj Tiwary could be the bench strength in middle order.Sandeep Patil and co. made a blunder picking Murali vijay ahead of Manoj Tiwary.

Posted by   on (November 6, 2012, 8:37 GMT)

Posted by Harshmeswanirafanadal on (November 6, 2012, 8:32 GMT)

Everyone who is complaining about vijay the selectors have made a smart move by selecting him. Unless a back up opener is there gambhir and sehwag will take their place for granted. Everyone who wants mukund, tiwary, parthiv etc they wont get to play anyway so wats the point? And everyone who is saying that rahane is not being fairly treated he is in the squad! Wat more do you want? Its better to waste vijay on benches than tiwary. Great selection.

Posted by Pushan001 on (November 6, 2012, 8:28 GMT)

Why has Murali Vijay been recalled? jsut for scoring that 266? well Manoj Tiwari scored a hundred against WI last year in tough Chennai conditions and back in ranji trophy he scored three big hundreds including a 267 and yet was overlooked. then how is M vijay being selected? jst dor being a CSK player? and why have the brought back ISHANT SHARMA? remermber his performance in australia? he gave away hundreds of runs without picking wickets and now without much of a good performance behind him he gets picked ahead of Ashok Dinda? this is not a good 15

Posted by ste13 on (November 6, 2012, 8:25 GMT)

Incredible selection - I mean H. Singh and I. Sharma. Hardly any record in the last 5 years and poor form confirmed by their performance in Ranji games. And also Ranji games show that there are some options to consider...

Posted by Mr.Ram on (November 6, 2012, 8:17 GMT)

Youvraj definitely! Harbhajan seriously?

Posted by moBlue on (November 6, 2012, 7:52 GMT)

i don't care how "talented" y'all think the youngsters are... 2 seniors should not be removed from the *test* team until they decide they want to retire, based on their track record in *test* cricket - which by the way consists of 2 innings over 5 tense days and is very different from the "gully cricket" you all like to watch your young-uns excel in! - and those two seniors are sachin and sehwag. if you wanna quibble with me, i suggest you look at their test match records - on the cricinfo web page - first! i would also point out that those two have belonged to a special class called "matchwinners", if you have paid any attention to test cricket at all! as for the rest, i believe pujara and kohli and dhoni are automatic choices, the last only because he happens to be the skip. that leaves an opening spot and a middle order spot, or two opening spots, depending on whether sehwag wants to bat in the middle... which *could* mean gambhir, rahane and yuvraj since 6 bowlers have been picked

Posted by Murali1221 on (November 6, 2012, 7:36 GMT)

don't know why they have picked vijay.. he doesn't have technique..not much tempermant either.. can't play away from home.. if you want to build a team..this is not hte way it should be.. atleasat raina has shown spirt/temprament

Posted by pavan.adapa on (November 6, 2012, 7:31 GMT)

why every time selectors selecting the ishant sharma and murali vijay, ishant even he is not wickets in internationals and ranjis..in my point of view if you take manoj tiwary as a spin bowler instead of ojha he can bowl leg spin and he can bat, compare to both tiwary much more better than ojha.. like they have samit patel..(england)

No Raina? BCCI Are you sure Dhoni is happy with the selection?

Posted by gandhala on (November 6, 2012, 7:11 GMT)

Surprised to see Vijay but I feel its a good move. He is an excellent fielder in catching positions be it slips or short leg. The best in short leg after a long time. Here he might have scored more than Sekar Dhawan or Mukund. Also Dhoni might have had his influence in Vijay's selection. Apart from that ,time to look into openers other than sehwag and gambhir. Vijay might be handy in overseas condition also we are grooming guys for next WC in Australia. Harbajan : Not just surprised , cant find any better word though. Yuvi : He can score with bat no doubt but waiting to see his bowling Fast bowlers : As always we r short of resource , i would like to try kulkurni (MI team) he is bit sharp. He can be better than Umesh yadav unless UY give me a surprise.Ishant sharma not my man to take 1 wicket in each innings in all test. He might take 4 in 1 but cant be consistant.I Pathan: Injured currently, also I am not sure if he can swing the red ball now but need to give him a chance shortly.Zak??

Posted by raj_che on (November 6, 2012, 7:04 GMT)

There are lot of players who have performed consistently for the past 1 year or so like Badrinath, Manoj Tiwary..but people like Yuvraj singh just come out of the blue score just one double century and make their way into the team. How unfair is that?? Just bcos this guy has fought his way against Cancer can earn him lot of respect and can appreciate his courage but it does not mean he should be granted a place in the team. When did yuvraj singh became an automatic selection in the test team to be selected right away with just one or 2 good performance? he can be an automatic choice in the ODI but not in test. he has played 37 test matches with a paltry average of 37. How many chances will he keep getting while manoj tiwary and badri are just not considered even after consistent performance. Selectors need to take into account the performance and not sentiments. Bad work in selecting Yuvraj for the test team. Poor luck for guys like Badri and Manoj.

Posted by Prashant_Shetty on (November 6, 2012, 7:04 GMT)

Till how long will they turn a blind eye towards mohammad kaif.. he has been consistently doing so well in the domestic circuit. He deserves a place in the test team..

Posted by   on (November 6, 2012, 7:00 GMT)

Harbhajan selection is worst of all..he is in such a woeful form that he cannot take wkts against the weak team of HYD... and his woe ful comment followed" Dont judge the bowler by wickets count...."..haha he has no motivation to take wkts..& how is he going to contribute for winning ....

Posted by   on (November 6, 2012, 6:59 GMT)

Nothing New expected in fisrt selection by new panel, but Vijay and Ishant should not be there, case of Bhajji can try in a match , if he justify in his selection in a match, he might do well against Eng and we dont have a good replacement either. Ashwin and Ojha shud be in playing XI if Dhoni go with 2 spinnrs. Pankaj Singh, Shami Ahmed , Dhawal Kulkarni, or Bhuwneshwar Kumar should have tried..Pankaj singh should have tried for 3-4 home and 3-4 away test matches, he is an intelligent long format bowle. Shikhar Dawan should have been picked along with Manoj Tewari and, Dhawan is in Best form in India at the moment. In form new talent should have been picked ahead of paperbase talent. Rahane should get a chance ahead of Yuvraj..though Yuvi's bowling make him first choice..Selector should grrom Irfan Pathan as an allrounder and for number 7 spot, with Dhoni at#6.

Decent side but seniors are there only on past reputation. Why is Harbhajan there though when he is unlikely to figure in 11 ? Yuvraj has been given umpteen chances. He really needs to click as he is likely to get nod in the first test. Please prepare picthes that assist spin bowling and Dhoni please spin the coin that way that you win the toss.

@kanwar11 - exactly the same thoughts from fans out there. TIWARI and RAHANE are our future.Time has come to put them with KHOLI and PUJARA. Short- sightedness does not work. Dhoni and seniors are blocking path of youngsters.

For those of you who were wondering why Vijay and Harbhajan were selected, Selection is not just about picking by the averages and picking by whoever played well in their last match. The selectors are selectors because they have got immense experience and they know who will succeed and when is the right time to bring in someone. That is what they have done here. I, for one, is always a big supporter of Vijay. Harbhajan's selection is quentionable. However, I get the feeling that is the right time to give him a last opportunity. He was a champion, once. The call for the selection of Tiwary is very much valid. May be he should have been selected instead of Rahane. Anyway, if India gets a spinning track and if they play all the 3 spinners, it will be hard to beat India.

why is M Vijay in the team ???? I think is very worst batman in test..Otherwise good selection by Patil. One thing is good, yuvi is come in team India. He is in good form, made double century in Ranaji and took 5 wickets in practice match against England. So we will hope to be continued Yuvi's form.My Team India 11 should be as follows: 1.Virender Sehwag 2.Gautam Gambhir 3.Cheteshwar Pujara 4.Sachin Tendulkar 5.Virat Kohli 6. Yuvraj Singh 7. MS Dhoni (capt & wk) 8. R Ashwin 9. Harbhajan Singh 10. Umesh Yadav 11.Zaheer Khan All The best Team INDIA...We will win series with 4-0...

Where is Praveen kumar. Why ishant sharama in the list

Posted by IndCricFan2013 on (November 6, 2012, 4:33 GMT)

Overall a good Selection. Yuvi is a better choice than Irfan for Indian conditions as a spinning all rounder. It is better to leave Raina out than take him and bench. Let him focus on Ranji games, I am sure he will be back. Rahane deserves a chance that he got as a middle order back up. If yuvi or some one else fails, he would get his chances, but if fails it will go back to Raina. Again Vijay is a the only choice for opener back up, he will be an ideal replacement for Shewag. He can play long innings and at a higher scoring rate. Mukund bit struggled and Vijay is bit more positive than him. But this would be Vijay's last chance. Indian conditions, so Harbajan is probably only choice they had for test matches, as a backup. Isant Sharma is some how holding on to the place, he has age on this side, he need to make use of it. Only left out to feel for is Manoj Tiwary, the guy never had a luck, injuries, captain, selectors, no one seems to be convinced. More seams will be added overseas.

Posted by GlobalCricketLover on (November 6, 2012, 4:30 GMT)

"Asked whether the selectors had any specific long-term goal for the team, Patil said 'No'". Excellent ! so we will continue to remain shortsighted.

Posted by kanwar11 on (November 6, 2012, 4:06 GMT)

Dear selectors, I just have one question for you guys. Where the hell is Manoj Tiwary. I feel bad for him and Rahane. First of all they are never picked if they are, we don't see them in the playing 11. I have no idea what they will have to do to get into this Indian side.

Posted by Harry1218 on (November 6, 2012, 3:59 GMT)

@mikey76 : This england team can't even score over 200 against india spin attack.... No doubt India will threash england by 4-0 in test, 5-0 in ODI and 2-0 in T20..

Posted by Pacelikefire_Samrat on (November 6, 2012, 3:51 GMT)

I feel real sorry for Ojha. Its tough being the 2nd best spinner in India coz the best spinner and Harbhajan will always be picked to play for India. What a farce!I expected the new selection committee to do lotsa changes with Sandeep Patil now at the helm. But this team selection is even more conservative than it was before. On what basis were Harbhajan,Zaheer & Ishant selected?Guess Dhoni didnt have the total say in the team selection like Clarke has for Australia, else we would have seen a test team with Ravindra Jadeja,Piyush Chawla and Rohit Sharma in it.Forget a 4-0 whitewash, lets just hope that it wont be the other way around.

Very happy to see Yuvraj back in most important test format. I really appreciate his courage & determination! Wish him & India all success.

why india left out irfan pathan.........he is ahead of yadav and harbhajan..........irfan can get wickets with the new ball........

Posted by joseyesu on (November 6, 2012, 2:51 GMT)

The selection commitee clearly wants Yuvraj in the playing 11. Rahane, Vijay wont play in 11 unless there is a injury concern to sehwag and harbajan selection is a headache for Dhoni as already Ashwin, Ojha are perfroming well in tandem.

Posted by luckydibs on (November 6, 2012, 2:35 GMT)

I think Bhaji and Vijay did not deserve a place in the Indian squad. Bhajji has not done any thing special better to say anything worth enough to even bring his name in the selection Panel. Getting wickets in T20 isnt the same as getting wicket in Tests. Bhajji should have proved by getting wickets against Hyderabad who except for VVS Laxman does not have a class player in their squad. He did not even get a single wicket in the first innings. I would have prefered a Iqbal abdullah or Jalaj Saxena or even Akshay Darekar who were getting wickets in first class cricket and were in India A squad. Bhajji and Vijay were not even considered for India A squad simply because they were not good enough. Regarding Vijay's case a single knock of 266 for ROI against Rajasthan who were a depleted attack in that match was not worth enough to get a place in the Indian squad. His one day form is good should have given a chance in one day squad. I would have prefered Shikhar Dhawan or Abhinav Mukund.

Posted by Al_Bundy1 on (November 6, 2012, 2:28 GMT)

By selecting the likes of Murli Vijay, Ishant Sharma, and Bhajji, Selectors have forced Dhoni's hand. Now he has no choice but to play the likes of Gambhir, Sehwag, and Zaheer, even if they are woefully out of form and unfit.

Posted by Al_Bundy1 on (November 6, 2012, 2:23 GMT)

Murli, Bhajji and Ishant Sharma should never be considered for Test matches. People still think Ishant has potential! He has almost played 50 test matches. If he had any potential, he should have been India's leading fast bowler by now. Pankaj Singh of Rajasthan, and Imtiaz Ahmed of UP are better fast bowlers. In recently concluded Ranji Trophy match, UP beat a star studded Delhi mainly because of excellent bowling by Imtiaz Ahmed. Imtiaz claimed 9 wickets in that match, while Ishant Sharma could barely manage 3 wickets. Murli is a fast track bully who can play only on dead wickets. Bhajji has forgotten how to spin the ball.

India can pick any team whilst 4-0 defeat awaits them. An undeniable truth

Posted by Feroz9700 on (November 6, 2012, 1:43 GMT)

Predictable selection by a new panel. Excellent decision to drop Raina, he is a good T20 player but needs to work on his batting for test matches. Irfan should have made the team this time b'coz he was looking good for a past few months with both bat and ball. Having a backup for each department sounds good but needs to be supported by proper logic by selecting In-form players. Yuvraj making the team was the best decision, he earned his place and really silenced his critics in a big way, he can easily call himself an all-rounder.Indians need not worry about there 5th bowler now with Yuvraj doing so well and on Spin friendly pitches should serve Indian cause pretty well. Still a good balanced team, should do well this time.

Test Cricket is a waste of time. Play T20s and you will draw 15 times more spectators.

Posted by fair-heart on (November 5, 2012, 23:48 GMT)

In this indian squad Ishan sharma and Harbhajan are bad inclusions, Yuvraj is not bad because he can bat and bowl as per situation we can use him, rehane is good option because he is in good nik and young, why cant we go for dinda instead of Ishan?

Posted by Cricketcraze912 on (November 5, 2012, 22:42 GMT)

1. Gambhir 2.Sehwag 3. Pujara 4. SRT 5. Kohli 6. Yuvi 7. Dhoni 8. Ashwin 9. Ojha 10. Harbajan 11. Yadav/ Z Khan. This is the ideal team. If any batsman gets injured and is not going to play, Rahane can go in. If a pace bowler is out, then I Sharma or Varun Aaron ( who should be groomed even though not in squad ). If a spinner is out, Yuvi can bowl ( we can rely on him ; after all, he just took 5 wickets against the england team for India A ).

Posted by Virs_Ferrari on (November 5, 2012, 22:29 GMT)

Would have loved to see irfan pathan in the playing eleven , so india can have Zaheer , Irfan , Ashwin , Bhajji , Ojha , Yuvraj to compromise the bowling. Gambhir and sehwag are both out of form. I dont have a lot of hopes on Vijay. But India dont seem to have good reserve openers now that Rahane is put in the middle order. I think Rahane should be groomed as a opener and Rohit Sharma should be put in the middle order as a last chance to prove himself. His first class record is excellent and i still believe he can be a great addition to the test team. Raina should never be allowed in a test match. Pujara , Kohli & Yuvi are deserving candidates. Dhoni though not the ideal test candidate, is still the best wicket keeper batsman india has. And finally whenever tendulkar does decide to retire one of (Kohli , Sharma , Tiwary , Badri ) can take his place.

Posted by mikey76 on (November 5, 2012, 22:27 GMT)

B-ind. your team didnt get anywhere near 450 in England on some flat tracks so I wouldn't get overly confident against an apparently "weak" England team that spanked you 4-0.

Posted by B-Ind on (November 5, 2012, 22:10 GMT)

Bhajji is a value addition..he 'can' bat (for a bowler)..he can bowl 50 overs (may not be very effective) but still..England are a weak team now, and Bhajji is very strong now! I think we have nothing to worry when it comes to batting on Indian tracks..we are sure to put up 450+ with any batting squad, the challenge is to wrap them up..Ojha, Ashwin, Bhajji, Ishant and zaheer should do it..without having to rely on Yuvraj.!

Hope Harbajhan plays, he's terrible. More afraid of his batting than his bowling. Zaheer Khan can be devastating but most likely will pull up injured. I think if Onions plays he will definitely probe Gambhir's weakness outside off stump while Anderson has a great record against SRT. Kohli and Yuvraj are definitely the danger men for England. Swann vs Yuvi is a mouthwatering prospect.

Posted by SandhyaMohan on (November 5, 2012, 20:57 GMT)

I wonder why nobody gave a comment about manoj tiwari, considering the current form manoj tiwari might be much better option than murali vijay. Even though tiwari is a middle order batsman, there is nothing wrong in choosing him a specialist opener to re-place murali vijay....

Posted by S.Jagernath on (November 5, 2012, 20:50 GMT)

A fair selection,Yuvraj Singh offers a decent 5th bowling option.Great to see Suresh Raina being dropped, don't want Graeme Swann to inflict another pair on him.Ajinkya Rahane's test debut is getting closer hopefully.Murali Vijay scored the runs & gets his reward.Harbhajan Singh on the other hand has done nothing but gets a reward.Iqbal Abdulla can also bat, field decently & is a good spin bowler.Praveen Kumar & Ashok Dinda should have been contending the 3rd seamer in the squad & not Ishant Sharma.

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 20:29 GMT)

Ishant shouldn't play, Harbhajan shouldn't play. Zaheer shouldn't play, the guy will bowl 4 overs and quit. the only option is to play yuvraj as the third spinner. Kohli will open with Umesh Yadav, and someone give the curator at Ahmedabad the right incentives to make an appropriate pitch.

1. M. Vijay 2. G. Gambhir 3. C. Pujara 4. S. Tendulkar 5. V. Kohli 6. V. Sehwag 7. Y. Singh 8. M. Dhoni 9. R. Ashwin 10. U. Yadav 11. P. Ojha

Posted by inswing on (November 5, 2012, 20:09 GMT)

The choice of Vijay is weak. He has been tried many times before, and has not excelled in international cricket in any conditions. Giving a chance to Mukund would have been far better.

Arrow011: England played with 3 pacemen last year in all their tests against India, and indeed any opposition. Doesn't mean India shouldn't play 3 frontline spinners + Yuraj, mind.

I'm delighted to see Yuvraj Singh And Harbhajan back in the team But as Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir are not rocking form then SS Das could also have been picked.. And yeah one more thing.. Where's IRFAN PATHAN?! He's In Awesome so why havn't the selectors taken him? :O

I really dunno how people forget M Vijay's scores of 266, 93 and 155 at the start of this domestic season and call for his axing!!!

Posted by Watchit on (November 5, 2012, 19:33 GMT)

I think people on the forum are getting too aggressive against Bhaji. I am very sure he will play. Ojha had a terrible match with figure of 2/200 and at the same time he can't bat, can't bowl. On the other hand Yuvraj will be an ideal shield for Dhoni as a left arm spinner. Bhaji had a great run against England in Sri Lanka they will like to capitalize that. Ashwin can bat and bowl and is still fairly young although a horrible fielder. Furthermore I think Indian selectors have done well to pick Bhaji he has spent one year out of the team and any player who has spent a year out of the team has done well when he has returned to the team in India. Reent examples are Zaheer Khan played for county, Shewag brought back in Australia and scored a 100, Irfan Pathan, even Dada Gangully, and lots more to name. Harbhajan has great experience and the guile to be champion bowler, He also adds strength to the batting. Although instead of M Vijay and Ishant it should have been Irfan Pathan and Tiwar

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 19:15 GMT)

We should play all 3 specialist spinners & Yuvraj Singh. It should be an all-spin attack. When Ashwin can bowl with a new ball in ODI & T20, then why not in test matches?!

About Vijay's inclusion - Guys have you not seen his 266 in the Irani cup a month ago?? He is in great form and his inclusion is totally justified by that innings.

Pujara should be No.3 and Kohli should be No.6. So here is my order.

1.Sehwag/Vijay 2.Gambhir 3.Pujara 4.Sachin 5.Yuvraj 6.Kohli 7.Dhoni 8.Harbhajan 9.Ashwin 10.Zaheer 11.Ojha

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 19:12 GMT)

Why is Ishant Sharma ever selected ? again he ll bowl 30 overs and go wicketless. It better to include Irfan (who is a wicket taking bowler) or Dinda (who has performed so well in the domestic matches).

Posted by Rajesh_india_1990 on (November 5, 2012, 18:59 GMT)

@wickyroy.paklover leave yuvraj,raina..ashwin is a better batsman than umar akmal..... if harbhajan is an uncle what about Afridi, ajmal, misbha?new born babies?..:))

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 18:52 GMT)

Just a point: Yuvraj's last Test (as mentioned in the article) was not in Mumbai but in Kolkata which was the second Test of the series. He was then dropped for Rohit Sharma for the third Test in the squad but actually Virat Kohli played in place of Yuvraj in the playing eleven.

Posted by Sakthiivel on (November 5, 2012, 18:52 GMT)

How does Harbhajan came into the team ? With his wonderful t20 performance in T20 WC where his balls send out of the ground or excellent county season where he hardly picked wickets.

@ADI_GUNGALIYA_FANTASY…Sachin probably spins more than any of these and then there is Sehwag with his off spin too…however, if Yuvraj is playing as a spin bowling allrounder then there is no need for Ojha.. …Chawla of Rahul Sharma would have provided variety in spin attack. Anyways, hope Zaheer Khan does not end up in the final eleven…I doubt he is fully fit to play.

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 18:27 GMT)

I don't know if its deliberate, but having an extra spinner, opener, middler order means there will be pressure to stay fit and perform. I would've taken Mukund over Vijay.

Posted by Johnny_129 on (November 5, 2012, 18:24 GMT)

I'm sitting up late in Melbourne and watching Foxtel - they are showing highlights of the first test from the last India v Aust series. I had almost forgotten how beautifully Tendulkar had batted to make 73 - it looked as if he was batting on a different pitch to all the other batsman! Now that he is close to the end, hopefully, Pujara, Kohli and Rehane can learn a few things from him, before his exit. India's batting will remain in decent shape with Pujara, Kohli and Rehane likely to succeed at this level (still early to assume in all 3 cases). However, pace bowling as always is a worry. Hopefully, Yadav will maintain his pace and continue to improve and Ishant manages to regain his old form. I'm not a fan of medium pace stuff but PK is one guy who could make a good support act - he has the BEST Test bowling average of all Indian bowlers EVER!!!

Couldn't see any change despite the new selection committee. No point of Harbhajan Yuvraj and Murali Vijay being back in the squad..Yuvraj has been tried in test alot of times young Rahane should be given the first priority to play... Badrinath has to suffer once again.. Selecters should select players who are comfortable playing the short ball so exclusion of Raina makes sense. Sachin should compromise with his batting slot.

Posted by CaptainKool on (November 5, 2012, 18:16 GMT)

Selection of Vijay shows positive step because of poor forms of Viru and Gauti. Although I'm surprised to see omission of Praveen Kumar. Has anyone noticed that?

Yuvraj is an easy wicket if there is any bounce so he should be fine on the flat roads of india.

Posted by stormy16 on (November 5, 2012, 17:45 GMT)

I am not sure how Harbajan can be selected on the basis of 'no other options'! If India canot find a quality spinner no one else can. Also I dont see anyone playing ahead of Ohja and Ashwin so I would have selected a younger chap for the experience. Its not like you need experience on the bench. Surely Yuvi needs to deliver this time around. He has been given so many chances and just hasnt been able to deliver. In the past he was lucky to get a shot but now there is a permanent spot up for grab if he can take it.

Posted by rsurya on (November 5, 2012, 17:25 GMT)

Selecting bowlers in India is always a funny thing, Ishanth sharma can take a wicket only if a batsman thinks its boring to face his deliveries, Yadav will be wayward with his line and length, Zak is now considered successful if he bowls his spell without any injuries, its boring to see a teams fast bowling department is present only for a name sake and spinners will do the job. Cook should advice his batsman not to sleep while playing ishanth sharma, he will bowl a slow bouncer outside offstump and consistently do it without any swing or pace, definitely the audience will sleep. Inspite of this many are busy talking of sachins retirement laxmans retirements, young batsmans replacements, atleast Mr.sehwag gives some entertainment in this match but some are targeting him too, after all its entertainment game, but its going down.

Had high hopes of badrinath making it ..but surprised with the selection of M Vijay

Posted by Arrow011 on (November 5, 2012, 17:22 GMT)

Playing 11 should be - Gambhir, Sehwag, Pujara, Sachin, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj, Dhoni, Ashwin, Harbhajan, Zaheer & Ojha. Play 3 frontline spinners & also Yuvraj. We need no pace bowlers, if need be Sachin & Kohli can bowl with Zaheer to make it old for spinners to operate. England fed us 4 pacemen in England, it is time we fed them 4 spinners.

Vijay should not have got a chance when Raina was establishing, he score 50+ in his last test series, he was coming to form, besides he is a tremendous team man + fielder. Even as a 12th man he could have been a bonus.

Posted by PPD123 on (November 5, 2012, 17:09 GMT)

Selection was along predictable lines. No point debating the inclusion of Vijay and exclusion fo Raina as neither would have made the playing 11 anyways. The top 7 count themselves in and Ind will go in with 2 spinners (Ashwin&Ojha) and 2 medium pacers(Zaheer and Umesh). Rahane/Vijay/Ishant/Habhajan will warm the benches.

Posted by QingdaoXI on (November 5, 2012, 17:03 GMT)

I personally think India should not play Yuvraj in Playing Xi as he is tried and tested failure not once but many times so Bring in Rahane @3 and push Pujara, Sachin and Kohli one spot down, it would have been better if selectors would have include new fast bowler in place of ishant and would have rested Zaheer for First test atleast. Still My Team is Gambhir, Sehwag, Rahane, Pujara, Sachin, Kohli, Dhoni(Cant drop him, becuase he is the captain otherwise he doesnt deserves the place ahead of Kartik, Saha and Parthiv), Ashwin, Zaheer (if found unfit bring in Irfan), Yadav, Ojha. Sorry Yuvi you only belongs to ODIs and T-20 with Raina, tests are not for you, better try Rohit Sharma and Manoj Tiwary. What is MVJ doing in this squad, he should be only allowed on field as water-boy and nothing more than that.

Posted by ovzdatta151 on (November 5, 2012, 16:59 GMT)

It doesn;t defy any logic of selecting Bhajji in the squad. Definitely, he won't be in playing eleven. I hope openers come good in this series otherwise we will be looking at new opening partners soon. I wish Rahane could be in playing XI, but I am not sure where he will be fitted in, until an unless Tendulkar's misery continues in the test series. I wish one leg spinner could have been selected in the team in place of Bhajji. In respect of Zak, I don;t know whether he gonna last for five days or not? I hope Indian team performs up to the mark...

Posted by Naresh28 on (November 5, 2012, 16:58 GMT)

@nampally - Karthik or even try NADEEM - took wickets in Ranji win and has played IPL as well. What might happen in these two games is that all the guys we are calling to be axed will start performing again.Batsman are aplenty to replace these seniors. Its the bowlers we need to find. I feel for TIWARI though.

Posted by Aussasinator on (November 5, 2012, 16:56 GMT)

Rahane should play immediately for India. Time to say bye to Sehwag but the selectors will need some more indisciplined innings to realise it. England is a good side to groom some upcoming bowlers and batsmen against, without the risk of losing.

Posted by vpk23 on (November 5, 2012, 16:54 GMT)

Not a bad selection; Guys we have only 11 slots...This is the bes. Yes 2 tests is more than enought to test the seniors durablity.

Posted by Iyer on (November 5, 2012, 16:38 GMT)

Any tom, dick and harry would perform in Indian conditions. So selection of sehwag, gambhir, etc. would help revive their career. When they go overseas they become a super flop or fake an injury to avoid humiliation, and the selectors will give chance to Badri and Mukund in such trying conditions only to find them to be the scapegoat. We have seen this selection policy for decades. Superstars get chance to make up their records in super good batting conditions, and promising talented youngsters from south india unfairly put to very testing conditions at the beginning of their career only to be sabotaged.

Why Dinda was not selected? Why Harbhajan was selected? Why M Vijay given another chance?

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 16:31 GMT)

poor guy manoj ..... he must be thinking wat more he can do to get a match .... why on earth vijay doing there ... u hav rahane as opener if ur opener having "53 avg" get fail one more tym (as we now usual to see tht). i think manoj shud be selected i really feal fr the guy. Selection of bhajii is also nt acceptable .... he didn't do aany thing good in home series ... i think rahul sharma may be gud option over bhajji as it may bring more variation into attack (not any disrespect fr bhajji , he is awsome bowler i still think he can make a comebck bt on recnt form i pick rahul above him). Not a very gud selection by ne selection commission Wat happen to Varun Aoron .. where he is ... guy remain more inzured than playing a game ... i really think selector shud pay attention toward pace bowling soon as possible , it looks Zak soon hav to retire in one format due to his inzury prone career..

Posted by mayank125 on (November 5, 2012, 16:24 GMT)

rohit sharma is a rare, class and good player than murli vijay.we already have a spare opener in rahane than why is he selected?

so shocked to see that no one talks about DHOBI , i mean dhoni...no talent....when team was doing good he was captain COOL....when team is not doing good no one even mentions his name....what has he done to earn his place in this team....every one started questioning the likes of Dravid laxman and Sachin....look at their contribution guys...he stands no where....

Posted by BetterReading on (November 5, 2012, 16:19 GMT)

UP won against Delhi, but still 4 players (Sehwag, Gambhir, Kohli and Ishant) of Delhi got selected while none from UP.

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 16:15 GMT)

Can somebody explain why Ishant Sharma is in the team? Forget 4-0 I think there is a chance we might lose this. So many deserving candidates Praveen Kumar: nobody knows what wrong he has done, just look at his stats in Test level and compare them with IS. Ashok Dinda: In the middle so many good spells in domestic level.

I have a feeling Umesh Yadav is going to end up as another Ishant Sharma in the long run.

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 16:13 GMT)

Murali Vijay does not deserve a place in this squad. Ishant sharma also has no significant performance in recent time..i really doubtful about india's series win.

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 16:11 GMT)

I dont know why everyone is gunning for M Vijay. To me, he is a bit of a gamble, as he has the ability to be an attacking opener. And i greatly hope that Umesh Yadav adds to his reputation of being a threatening bowler, this series. He is too exciting a potential to just let peter away...

Posted by Prakmca on (November 5, 2012, 16:10 GMT)

I thought the new selection committee head, Sandeep Patil is going to try something different and good., but sadly he made the worst decision by brining in Harbajan back to Intl squad. HE DID NOTHING IN RECENT MATCHES... Not able to given break through against Ranji team...... WORST DECISION.

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 16:03 GMT)

The team which has been selected looks a balanced one except Murli Vijay..I wonder,we have 27 Ranji teams in Domestic circuit and still they recalled Vijay....I second Runny1's opinion...at least Jafar should have been given an opportunity,a player who has been scoring heavily in domestic circuit..Anyways I wish Team India all the very best for the upcoming series...

Posted by TSJ07 on (November 5, 2012, 16:00 GMT)

yes it looks like the selection of Ishant and Bhajji is bit baffling but let me give you some insight into what Patil is thinking.1st about Bhajji:-We all know out of all non subcontinent teams Eng is weakest against spin and very weak against off spinners on spinning tracks.Bhajji has good past record against Eng and that why patil took him instead of others. Also IMO Ashwin might not be very effective coz he is more of a mystery spinner than a proper spinner. Also if Bhajji is not part of team then can anyone think of a alternative good spinner..no. And about Ishant;-He is talented but recovering from injury. He might not get into playing eleven but thats why Patil chose to create some dressing room environment for him to get used to it and practive with main players to get fully fit.

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 15:46 GMT)

Vijay is a poor call. I would have liked if someone like W.Jaffer was considered in the team because whenever he scores he scores big and that is a great sign for a test match opening batsman. I would have appreciated even a selection of a young man like Unmukt Chand or the First Class debutant batsman from punjab who is fresh from his debut double century.

Posted by InsideHedge on (November 5, 2012, 15:46 GMT)

As someone wrote, let's hope the selectors don't drop a bombshell and pick Bhajji ahead of Ojha, justifying the switch by claiming that Yuvi's left arm spin and recent fifer renders Ojha redundant. You never know with these jokers, anything is possible.

Posted by InsideHedge on (November 5, 2012, 15:44 GMT)

During one of the recent Champions League T20s matches, Murali Vijay played a dreadful shot to be dismissed. He was soon seen on the TV cameras poring over a laptop with a useless backroom staffer pondering where he went wrong. Seriously, you didn't need a laptop or any analyst to see what was wrong.

The images that I saw captured everything that is wrong with these modern batters, esp the ones honed on T20 games.

Posted by satanswish on (November 5, 2012, 15:44 GMT)

Ajinkya Rahane is way better than this over-hyped Murali Vijay.

Posted by InsideHedge on (November 5, 2012, 15:42 GMT)

Sehwag & Gambhir must be chuckling to themselves. With a guy like Murali Vijay "pushing" them, I bet they're REALLY REALLY afraid. Lol.

i am glad that raina wasnt picked rahane should open why are they trying to make him a middle roder batsman murali vijay has gotten many chances i dont think he deserves a chance how about badrinath

I feel this is a composite mix -but No young blood in the team-I mean giving chnace to a new or uncapped budding player-then only we will get some new palyers coming at early age.Good thing That Rahane Pujara got a chnace.Murali is a class player but he had a lean period-Hope he will do some good knock. But as you Know every body expects the Big man SRT to hit a form so that he can go for another 2-3 good big scores and decide to step down sooner. It is unfortunate for Badrinath to loose out all the time .Well he will get a chance unlike the unfortunate wasim or Kaif. All in all we want the indians to do well in all apsects than only batsmen doing well and bowlers alone doing well or so

Posted by Arunviz on (November 5, 2012, 15:35 GMT)

batting side is ok under Indian standards against any team whom visiting; worry about bowling side , need to introduce a new young leg spinner and a pace bowler who can bat under normal wicket like Bhuvaneswar Kumar from UP. Considering fitness and current form Zak , Bhaaji , Ishant , Ohja are need to be dropped out from bowling side.

Posted by salimk on (November 5, 2012, 15:30 GMT)

Hello Selectors , I guess here you have missed out Irfan Pathan ahead of Ishant Sharma who could be handy for batting as well, check his last ranji game he has scored in both innings of Baroda. Cant complain, Selectors has the habit of doing the mistakes again and again. Good luck Dhoni with your team. Let the player be selected on merit not for any odd reasons.

gr8 selection. glad to see ishant back into the team. he was a man,who can turn the match at any stage.zaheer should be rested.. nd kaif should be in.one universal truth.... jaffer has been neglecting by years.

Posted by sk12 on (November 5, 2012, 15:27 GMT)

Dont think Vijay is a good selection, even considering he is an opener (so not a like replacement for Tiwary, Raina). Why do we need 4 openers for a home series? Are we so not-confident of our regular openers' fitness? Why were they selected then?? A squad of 13 is sufficient for a 3 test home series, rest should play in the Ranji. And I am from Chennai btw.

Posted by vathabivaranan on (November 5, 2012, 15:27 GMT)

Instead of Sewag and Bhajj, who were out of form for the past 1 year +, one/ two from the victorious under 19 should have been considered. It is a pity that though Sewag possessed plenty of natural talent, could not see reasons for his failures and work for. If he is not seeing means to overcome now, then when? Seeing the form, Irfan Pathan should have been considered.

Posted by Cricketfan11111 on (November 5, 2012, 15:23 GMT)

Bhajji may not be in the playing XI, but just by being in the squad will send reminders of the capitulation England suffered in the T20 world cup. Yuvraj's spin will add to the spinning duo Ashwin and Ohja. All in all good selection. Hope oldies in the team keep injury free.

Posted by aravabalaji on (November 5, 2012, 15:22 GMT)

Everybody else is getting chances on one or two performances whereas ever consistent Badrinath has always been treated unfairly. He scored more than 2000 runs in all formats during 2010-11 but alas he never got a Test. He was picked for NZ series on Laxman's exit but he was not given a game. He will hold the record for the most benched player in Indian history. It's still baffling that a guy scored a debut 50 against Steyn & co in imposing conditions has never got another Test to play. It can happen only to Badri!

Posted by Haleos on (November 5, 2012, 15:20 GMT)

@ the_blue_android - perfectly put about Gauti. Why does he have to try to guide the ball to third ma and get out everytime. Lot of Indian bastman do that. They should be taught lessons on Cost-Benefit-Analysis.

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 15:19 GMT)

@praveen4honestremark. I agree with your remarks but I would like to add one rider. If the ball does not swing, he is a treat to watch. But if it does, he is a sight for sore eyes. Having said that, I would have AR as a reserve opener and MT as an able middle-order batsman.

Posted by Haleos on (November 5, 2012, 15:18 GMT)

@ y4yoga - bet u r from TN. Rohit has excellent Ranji record. Go check the stats. I wont select Vijay if he is the last opener left in India. I would ask one of the bowlers to do that job. Atleast we will have an extra bowler than useless batsman.

Posted by Indian_Cricket_Fanatic on (November 5, 2012, 15:18 GMT)

I don't understand why selection team does this to Rahane...first he has had about 3 years as a 1 down 2 down in the mumbai line up.....he has had to made open the innings in the past 1 year or so...and now again they claim they want him as a middle order batsman.....poor lad who is so technically talented but won't get much opportunities either... another thing being need of vijay as an opener when he's much suited for t20...Tiwary has scored so brilliantly and he deserved his chance instead... bhajji is needed in the side as he does provide experience and england are weak against spin...less said about our bowling line up the better...every1s mostly a flop! sachin should make a way for rahane...and he should bat at 4...yuvi at 6...vijay why are you here? if dhoni gambles and makes vijay open with gauti/sehwag its to see....

Parthiv Patel, in his current form, would have been a better choice for the position of the wicket-keeper-batsman. But, with Dhoni, being the captain, will be in the playing XI, and PP would just have warmed the bench... may be, it is better that PP is out and can again (and, again) prove his worth playing Ranji matches. (Parthiv, could also have been an equally good choice as the third opener, if PP can not push Dhoni out of his wicket-keeping position). But, Chennai would not have "approved", Parthiv replacing M.Vijay! NO?

My 15 member team India (including 3 reserves) : (1) Sehwag/ Vijay (when Sehwag unfit, which he will be for sure on a long tour), (2) Gautam Gambhir, (3) Virat Kohli, (4) & (5) Yuvraj Singh/ Rahane/ Pujara/ Raina (keep switching between them in the next 4-5 seasons to we have a very good middle order formed, (6) MS Dhoni (WK); (7) R Ashwin, (8) Umesh Yadav, (9) Pragyan Ojha, (10) Ishant Sharma (11) Zaheer Khan/ Parvinder Awana (when Khan is injured) as he has fitness problem.

Posted by Rumy1 on (November 5, 2012, 15:03 GMT)

The team for first two Tests should have been a mix of experience, youthful energy and talent. It should have read like this....Wasim Jaffer, Ajinkya Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara, Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Mohd.Kaif, S.Badrinath, Manoj Tiwary, MS Dhoni, Harbhajan Singh, Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav, Pragyan Ojha, Harmeet Singh and Irfan Pathan.

Posted by ADI_GUNGALIYA_FANTASY on (November 5, 2012, 15:03 GMT)

@wolf777, Sachin can bowl some leg-break if needed. If yuvi can pick 5 wicket + some drop catches against his bowling shows how england struggles against spin then sachin can pick wicket or two.

Posted by Nampally on (November 5, 2012, 14:59 GMT)

I can see why Indian fans are so irrate at the pointless selection of Harbhajan in the squad. The best comments came from @gnanzcupid. I wonder whether his Grandfather is a better bowler than Harbhajan or Not. But he is making a point just like Boycott once did. There should be a rationale for selection of Players into India Test team. It has become a joke to get into the Indian squad.Performance, Form & Fitness as the standard criteria for selection are not even considered. Do the Selectors have any crdeibility at all? Is this what rebuilding of the team is about? @InsideHedge: You make several valid points too. How can Irfan & Tiwary be kept out when guys like Harbhajan & Vijay are IN? I would have ventured to include M.Kartik even at the expense of 2 for 200 Ojha if experience was the critirion for Bhaji's selection. You appear to be right in stating these guys were chosen on Zonal (North & South) basis. Hopefully Dhoni will not make another Blunder by including Bhaji in XI.

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 14:58 GMT)

RETIREMENT QUEUE: Veeru. Gauti. Sachin. Zak. Any, some, or all of these four players, should be dropped , IF he / they do NOT perform in the first two tests. Enough is enough. Does the selectors have the guts to drop these and give chance to fresh faces (I didn't include Bhajji, assuming that he will NOT be in the playing XI. If he is, his name should also be added to the list of four)

Posted by Sehwagism on (November 5, 2012, 14:57 GMT)

I'll play Rahane or someone else(not Vijay) as opener and Sehwag in middle order. no place for yuvraj in plating 11. My team will be Gambhir, Rahane/any other opener, Pujara, Sachin, Kohli, Sehwag, Dhoni, Ashwin, Ojha, Sharma, Yadav/Zak.

Posted by Rumy1 on (November 5, 2012, 14:53 GMT)

Surprised that selectors have stuck with Gambhir and Sehwag who average 30 in Tests over the last two years. Gambhir has no century to boast of in the last 2 years while Sehwag has only one. What a shame that a guy like Vijay has got the nod ahead of much talented, classy, accomplished and experienced Wasim Jaffer who is ignored again and again.Another one ignored here is Mohd.Kaif who just struck a masterful 91 against Delhi. Kaif and his folks today outplayed Delhi which had Sehwag, Gambhir, Kohli and Unmukt Chand besides likes of Ishant Sharma and Ashish Nehra. Zaheer should have been rested.

Posted by Cricketfan11111 on (November 5, 2012, 14:43 GMT)

Vijay had a very good domestic season and his selection is justified. He is there as a back up opener. Tiwary is not an opener. We expect the same players who played against NZ to be in the playing XI except Yuvi coming in for Raina. All the best.

Posted by praveen4honestremark on (November 5, 2012, 14:40 GMT)

Murali Vijay is a good player when compared to Manoj tiwary. Murali also had played opening slot earlier and he made a fine half century too. He is a classy player with good technique.

instead of having rahane as middle order bastman and vijay as third opener i would ve gone for rahane as 3rd opener and badrinath as middle order batsman...for the third opener spot dhawan is better option than vijay...also in place of harbhajan go for younger aprajith or abdulla...another surprise exclusion was irfan just after scoring a century and taking 3 wickets...

If Kris Srikanth is still the Selection committie chairman today, people would have blamed him as Biased selector towards TN & CSK for selecting M Vijay. Where are they now? I strongly believe M Vijay is a better opener than V Sehwag (in current form). But anyway M Vijay will stay in the bench thru out the series if Gauti & Viru stayed fit. I would also request all INDIAN Fans to support whoever selected for the team and lets hope for the best against Poms. This is PAY BACK TIME Guys... Go INDIA GO !*!

Posted by Triple_A on (November 5, 2012, 14:33 GMT)

It seems really redundant to pick a squad of 15 members, especially when the Ranji is going on and some of the squad members desperately need practice. Personally, I would have picked the starting eleven (we all know who they are) + Rahane. Even if there are injuries mid-match, you cant really do much. In fact, if the selectors HAD to pick 15 members, I would have picked Raina and Tiwary who can be substituted in to field when the senior players need a break. Right now, other than making the fringe players feel good about being in the India XI, this selection really isn't fulfilling any purpose. Oh well, I guess the selectors wanted to play it safe...

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 14:23 GMT)

Murali Vijay!!!!How is this possible in this world!!!Very very bad selection....Manoj is far better cricketer than Vijay.

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 14:22 GMT)

Indian selectors did a good job by naming a experienced squad according to the Indian pitch conditions. It will be all spinning tracks. The experienced Indian batting must play well on these turning tracks. The spinners will have a great battle against England batsmen. We hope team India will come out victorious in this test seris.

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 14:22 GMT)

Hope S.Raina be included for remaining matches.M.Tiwary's omission is a setback for the team.

Posted by Neeta on (November 5, 2012, 14:18 GMT)

Excellent selection by the NSP headed by Sandeep Patil. I hear my fellow friends fighting over the squad but this is a completely justifiable team although I would have liked to see IP in the side. You need 5 bowlers to take 20 wickets in India and when we play IP at 7 we give ourselves the option of playing Ojha Ashwin and Bhajji all together along with IP and Zak. But how to drop a guy who is making one of the greatest comebacks we have seen in cricket. Yuvraj has done nothing wrong since coming back and deserves to be in the side. IP may be has to improve his bowling a bit more to comeback as he can only bowl with new ball. Praveen Kumar though underrated, I find him an extremely good long term option for test matches. He did very well in his limited oppurtunities. Sehwag, Gambhir and Sachin will all do well in te upcoming series and roar back into form. Mark my words!!!

Posted by NanaNanu on (November 5, 2012, 14:18 GMT)

All fans cannot be satisfied at all times by any selector;however the final team should consist of 5 batsmen,a w.keeper and 5 bowlers. In Subcontinent, batsmen friendly pitches there should atleast be 5 bowlers to get an opponent out twice. If we choose 7 batsmen that too at home,it shows the lack of confidence in your reputed batsmen. Two off spinners is a waste, devoid of variety.Piyush Chawla or Amit Mishra should have been there. Also we should groom youngsters at home pitches instead of selecting veterans who should be automatic choices for foreign tours.

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 14:06 GMT)

An expected, predictable and "safe" selection. However, selecting Harbhajan in spite of his poor form, shows lack of spinners in India. Selecting Vijay in place of Dhawan is strange. Perhaps, selectors don't want to select so many players from Delhi and north. I can't see any other reason for picking Vijay in place of Dhawan.

Posted by ProdigyA on (November 5, 2012, 14:05 GMT)

I agree with most of the comments here that M.Tiwary or Badri should have been selected instead of Vijay and given opening slot to Rahane. But i dont think it should really matter as they would not be in the final 11 anyway. The only debate was with Raina and i think Yuvi is a good replacement. The real issue with Indian cricket is the form of the openerns GG and Viru and i think this is the last chance for them. Also bowling, Zak's fitness is like a toss which can go either way and is Yadav still young and learning? Its not a surprise that the final 11 would be - GG, Viru, Pujara, SRT, Kohli, Yuvi, MS, Ashwin, Ohja, Zak and Yadav.

People like Bhaji , Chawla are born with truckload of luck . I would not want Bhaji to be even in my fav IPL team - the Mumbai Indians team leave along India . But lo and behold he is in Indian team with ZERO performance over last 2 years.Never seen him spin the all in last 2 years at least. On other hand Badri , Tiwary and so many others hardly get 1 chance in a blue moon and they perform consistently at all levels including Ranji, IPL and all places but still get nothing. If Zaheer Khan breaks down again in these opening two Test Matches, I would like to see the Physio Ashish Kaushik REPLACED. It's clear this man is nothing but a sheep who simply signs fitness certificates as directed by the players themselves!

Posted by InsideHedge on (November 5, 2012, 13:54 GMT)

I understand this "squad" (reads more like a township than a cricket team) is for the first TWO tests only.

Let's hope some sense prevails come the 3rd Test. If Messrs Sehwag and Gambhir fail in the opening two Tests (they'll have had four poss inns), they must be DROPPED. Let's see if they have the courage.

Poor selectors are clearly at the mercy of Chennai Superkings and Co. Only that can justify Vijay's selection and Tiwari's omission. Nice one BighouseBoys :)

Posted by Nampally on (November 5, 2012, 13:54 GMT)

The Selectors chose a conservative team, as expected. But including Harbhajan in the squad defies logic. He is at his worst form even in Ranji games!Ashwin is the off spinner who will play in XI. Ojha & Yuvraj will be back up spinners in XI. Just going by common sense a right arm leg spinner will provide wrist spin on a turner. If Rahul Sharma is unacceptable, Tiwary is a useful part time leg spinner & an excellent batsman - nearly got a century in the first match vs. England. Adventerous move would have been incl. M.Kartik in,the best LH spinner in India. The second bad move is dropping of Irfan Pathan. He scored a century for Baroda + got 3 wkts. in the last Ranji match. Who did Irfan annoy to be dropped? ZAK is not even fit & is in the squad. Did his groin trouble mysteriously disappear?. Luckily this squad is for 2 tests only, as expected. This will be the final call for Gambhir, Sehwag, ZAK & Tendulkar to perform or Retire.Play disciplined & responsible Cricket- Not Reckless -OK !

@Sautrik: You write "I understand you all are highly repected officials who know more cricket than we do...."

1) With selections like these, how can we respect them?

2) These men most certainly do NOT know more about cricket than us fans. One doesn't have had to play Test Cricket to have an educated opinion on it.

Most of us who write here have a better idea of how to go about picking a competitive squad.

Posted by Munafis810 on (November 5, 2012, 13:49 GMT)

Why Bhajiiiiiiiii???? I do not believe the luck Bhaji has. He performs NIL and always gets selected. England Batsmen shiver the moment they hear word leg spin. This was perfect time to debut Rahul Sharma and get him confident and make him go through a learning curve. But Bhajii????

Posted by real26_03 on (November 5, 2012, 13:49 GMT)

No Manoj Tiwary and Badrinath!!! why is ishant sharma in the team???

Posted by Darshi007 on (November 5, 2012, 13:48 GMT)

If Rahane can bat one down he surely can be in the team as a back up opener too. Why has M.Vijay been selected? Manoj Tiwary continues to get the cold shoulder. I have a feeling that Vijay is the captain's choice. The other opening option was Mukund but his failure against the same set of bowlers in England probably went against him even though he got a decent score against England in the warm-up game. Instead of Ishant Sharma we could have given Bhuvaneswar Kumar or Ashok Dinda a look in. Bhajji got in by default as there is no 3rd spinner in the radar of selectors. The probable playing XI for the 1st test looks very strong though with Vijay, Bhajji, Ishant and Rahane warming the bench although I would love to see Rahane in stead of Sehwag just as a long term option. But alas he himself doesn't want to open I guess.

Posted by InsideHedge on (November 5, 2012, 13:47 GMT)

England have the right strategy for home test squads. On the morn of the match, all players outside the 11 (and there's usually a 13 man squad) are quickly released so they can play county cricket. Remember, England is so small that players can get in their corporate cars and quickly drive to their desired cricket venue.

Meanwhile, the 12th man is almost ALWAYS a local player from the host venue, usually a 2nd XI youngster who happens to be a quality fielder. 99% of the time, the 12th man is just running errands, and on the rare occasion he has to be on the field, he should be a top fielder - we saw that with Gary Pratt running out Ponting in 2005.

Sadly, this kind of forward thinking is not possible in India. Instead, we pick a 15 man squad when only 11 can play. What a farce! They'll have no time to reach the venue of a Ranji game; one unlucky bloke will be kept behind and bored out of his mind running drinks and shining shoes for the "seniors".

monaj tiwari is miss from test side why???????

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 13:41 GMT)

Simple rule is that every player should be able to transform domestic cricket success into international cricket. Vijay may be good against other Ranji teams but can he replicate against England??, big question, Does anyone notices Viru's attitude?? he plays as if he is doing some favour to country,, SRT looks lost on field,,,Zak looks sooo tired as if he will collapse after bowling 3 balls,,Can Bhajji turn the ball??

All Indian IPL teams lost every game in CL at Africa,, thats the eye opener for BCCI,,, these player can not play on bowler's pitch,,,they are used to play on flat tracks,,, in every match they will pile up 600+ runs and will claim victory against england. Even pace bowler could not do any wonder on SA pitches in CL,,,,,, Why we can not accept that these players can not do anything,,,,

Posted by InsideHedge on (November 5, 2012, 13:40 GMT)

I missed Ishant Sharma. Who can forget his five wickets against Australia last winter? That's five wickets over the WHOLE TEST SERIES. The man who has a strike rate of a wicket every 100+ runs since the summer of 2011 is a shoe-in for the Test Squad.

Way to go selectors. Way to go Sandeep. It doesn't matter whether these guys were former players (like Patil), or non-players (Jagdale), once they become selectors, the behaviour is always the SAME. It's consistent, and it's depressing.

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 13:39 GMT)

Unlucky Badri. Others get a million chance to prove themselves but he was a water boy & now dropped.

Posted by InsideHedge on (November 5, 2012, 13:37 GMT)

Ojha took 2 wickets for over 200 runs in a Ranji match yesterday, and he's a guaranteed starter. Zaheer's fitness is suspect for a T-20 game, but the selectors are "not worried" about his ability to play a Test. Meanwhile, a bloke who couldn't take wickets playing for Essex in the SECOND DIVISION of the English County Championship against 2nd tier county batsmen is in the 15 man squad to bowl against England's best players. Further, he can't even take any wickets playing for Punjab against low quality Ranji batters.

Batting-wise, we have a bloke (M Vijay) who is without question a South Zone pick, we know he hasn't been picked on merit. Bhajji is a North Zone pick. Just look at the selectors, they are pulling for their respective regions, don't forget (fan) that when these selectors were chosen they had a brief to carry out, this includes ensuring that their region hosts a lucrative ODI or two.

We won't get anywhere till we remove these insular, political obstacles.

Team looks OK.. It would have been better if Tiwary had given a go ahead of Vijay as we have Rahane as backup opener.. Instead of Bhajji, could have given chance to some young spinner, unknown to English batsmen...

Posted by y4yoga on (November 5, 2012, 13:35 GMT)

No surprise that M Vijay has been given a chance because of his good performance in domestic in the last month. Of course he has to be given a chance when floppers like Rohit and bajji were always given a chance over a year. Sorry for raina as he is now finding the same problem as Yuvi faced 3 years ago when there was Ganguly and Laxman in the team. one good thing about selection is that viru was not dropped as he is always dangerous to oppositions even if he stays for 1 session.people like badrinath should have been given a chance in the test side, not only in the squad but also in the playing 11. surprising that he has not got a chance despite of Rahane. Rahane should be given a chance in One dayers instead of Rohit and then based on that performance the selectors should decide. I thing Rahane is the only flop in the side as he is not fully prepared for the test matches. otherwise The squad is ok.

I seriously don't understand, have the selection committee got something against Manoj Tiwary?.... he must be the only player who gets dropped consistently after playing consistently well.... and WHAT?? mural vijay?... BCCI, please look at all the comments below. I understand you all are highly repected officials who know more cricket than we do, but there must be some reason why a single comment doesn't favour his inclusion. Furthermore, he was the worst player in India A's warm up match, plus he fails consistently whenever he gets a chance.

Posted by InsideHedge on (November 5, 2012, 13:31 GMT)

Indian fans have beaten me to the punch 2day, justifiably criticizing the selection of Harbhajan, Ishant, the lead-footed M. Vijay and the extraneous 15 man party. However, I'm amused at some of the ridiculous names that have been put forward as replacements for these proven failures (in the case of Bhajji, a man who is woefully out of form).

What we have here, folks, is a case of a lack of quality players throughout the country, especially in the area of bowling.

Posted by PhaniBhaskar24 on (November 5, 2012, 13:29 GMT)

The selection clearly shows that, Indian Selectors are looking for short term prospects only. Particularly in Bowling department, the thinking is for this series only....very very poor selection.....

In batting department, i would rather have Ajay Rahane as a back up opener than Murali & in middle order i would pick Manoj Tiwary

Posted by InsideHedge on (November 5, 2012, 13:26 GMT)

Vikram Rathour and some dude called Mr. Hans in th selection committee - that explains why Harbhajan is in the Test Squad.

Its really funny how all this time Suresh Raina was talking to media. How painful it was for him to be part of that 4-0 Indian side. And how he wanted to give it back to English team. And how he boasted that English would be on the receiving end this time. And he not giving getting selected in the team. Despite being the captain of India A. Poor Suresh Raina Can't be worse than that.

Posted by Soulberry on (November 5, 2012, 13:18 GMT)

Peculiarly, Vijay, a tried and tested failure, conrinues to be selected while Manoj Tiwary keeps wondering. This mystery obviously has hidden reasons. Rahane is there as a cover for openers anyway and Manoj deserved the spot.

Posted by sharidas on (November 5, 2012, 13:14 GMT)

Frankly, I would not want to be in the selectors shoes. With such a huge array of players in the Ranji Trophy, it is still a pity that we do not have much options left. IPL like the English Premier League (Football) will not help local talent.

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 13:11 GMT)

Unlucky Badri misses out again...we could have tried new bowlers like Pankaj Singh or Parvinder Awana....wonder what happened to Deepak Chahar who burst into the Ranji scene with 8 wickets in an innings...and do we need Harbhajan with Ashwin and Ojha in the side? Overall, not a bad composition but it does leave a few questions unanswered.

Posted by madras_boy on (November 5, 2012, 13:02 GMT)

Sad to see so many comments against VJ. While it was a good decision to include Vijay, he is actually a reserve opener like rahane for the middle order. He has a good technique and temperament to excel in this format of the game. He failed only in the WI series a year go and he can easily replace Sehwag in the test team with his temperament. VJ haters are jealous of him being included in the team. VJ is better than Tiwary or Rahane for the opening slot. Yuvi was selected due to his spin abilities and no concerns for it. Hopefully Ashwin & Yuvi will be in the final 11 with Harbhajan warming the bench.

Posted by Al_Bundy1 on (November 5, 2012, 12:59 GMT)

Murli Vijay has been a proven failure at test level. Shikhar Dhawan would have been a better option. Harbhajan Singh can't spin, and Ishant Sharma is a fast bowler who can't take wickets in seam friendly wickets of England and Australia. How do you expect him to take wickets in India? He might be quick, but he lacks the cunning to outfox top level batsmen. Pankaj Singh of Rajasthan, or Imtiaz Ahmed of UP would have been a better option. We already have enough baggage in those 3 non-performers - GAMBHIR, SEHWAG, and TENDULKAR.

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 12:56 GMT)

instead of MURALI VIJAY ,SURESH RAINA or MANOJ TIWARY would be right....... if v.sehwag and zaheer khan does not perform well in this series in all forms(batting bowling and fielding ) they can retire from indian cricket team bczzzzzz many better cricketersl are awaiting for the opportunity .

Posted by bistaumanga on (November 5, 2012, 12:55 GMT)

what's the use of getting rid of raina, poor unlucky rahane and vijay had to still carry drinks because of a 34 averaging guy called Yuvraaj. I would say Manoj Tiwary ,Badrinath & Mukund are luckier than poor Rahane and Vijay as they will still get somthing to play in the form of Ranji Trophy. Its shame that players averaging 55s, 60s and even more are not getting a single test caps for players like Yuvraj, who had hit just 3 centuries all against Pakistan if i'm correct, which mean all of those 3 are in either India or Pakistan and for Raina, though they get rid of him, but i guess they will call him back soon. Come on Indian selection Panel, grow up and stop shaming this honorable game of cricket. Test is not for ones who can hit out of ground in 60m boundaries, its the game of temperament, passion, class. Had it been any other country I bet that Rahane, Manoj Tiwary, Badri, Vijay, Mukund, Parthiv would be in team even in place of good for nothing stars like Sehwag, Gambhir, dhoni

Posted by andrew27994 on (November 5, 2012, 12:51 GMT)

Also a player like Irfan Pathan could add a lot of value to the team. He could have replaced one of our inexperienced batsman's slot and play as a 5th bowler and reduce the workload of our infamous fast bowlers.

In my opinion they should have picked Pathan in place of Ishant Sharma who still hasn't impressed enough in FC matches.

Aside from that, I'm impressed to see Vijay in the squad after his recent success in the domestic season. I hope Zaheer proves me wrong and bowls well in this series because India seem to be struggling without his contributions.

Posted by maddy20 on (November 5, 2012, 12:39 GMT)

Very good selection, but Tiwary being ignored time and again in favor of a perenially non-performing Vijay is baffling. Tiwary is a fantastic batsman with a solid temparment and a useful leg-spinner that any captain would love to have in his team. Badrinath has been rightly ignored. He has a max of 5 years of test cricket left in him and we would not want to be facing a middle order crisis anytime soon, with him either non-performing and wasting a slot, or does not make the team due to fitness issues. I think they should play both Rahane and Pujara for the first test.

why people are so furious about Vijay's selection ......... He is a classy player. has a century against Australia. Everyone knows he wont be part of the playing 11 then y people are commenting against his inclusion in 15 man squad.

Dhoni better come up with some excuse and stay away from series.. He has been given a very poor team to play with..else how would zak, bhajji, sehwag, gambhir, Ishant get selected...and at least 4 of them will be in playing 11 for sure... England will win first test for sure unless they play very very very poorly..

Virendra Sahwag is essentially middle order batsman, who was forced to open as there was no place in the middle. After retirement of Dravid and Laxman he should get his preferred place in the middle order. He may be more effective as middle order batsman. The team lack genuine right arm leg spinner and allrounder. The Selectors should look into these areas and promote talent available.

I don't know why Murali Vijay is in the team. Manoj Tiwary should have been in the team as a middle order batsman and Rahane should have been as an opener. Murali vijay is in the team because of Dhoni otherwise no one would ever know who is Murali Vijay .

And players from a losing Ranji team are also there like ishant sharma, Gambhir and Sehwag.

Delhi was banged by Uttar pradesh in ranji match despite the presence of these stars in the team.

I think same will happen with indian team if these three players will play for indian team in first test.

Posted by Raghu_Y on (November 5, 2012, 12:27 GMT)

why have reserves for 2 tests in a home series. They select the same number of players that they select for a long tour abroad. They should select the exact 12 (including the 12th man) that will play and use local players as substitute fielders. The others can play ranji atleast. Once the 11 is selected on the 1st day of the match the other 4 become mere spectators.

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 12:26 GMT)

this is not the right team how u can choose the unfit player for test cricket and those player who is not in the form( who want to play the t20 but unfit for test) veeru, gautam, zak, we can see that india will loose the test match bcause in the the 3rd or 4th over zak have some problem in the leg and then he will out of the rest test match and veeru out in the same manner, all of blame on the MSD what is do with unfit player for MSD at lat why we choose the bhaji he is also out of form.we think that the new selection team will choose the correct player what all the same.

Irfan over Ishant any day. Ishant is like Afridi - all promise no performance.

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 12:24 GMT)

A stagnant underperforming XI again. When will the selectors be ruthless and bring in new blood and have the balls to drop non perfomers like Sehwag, Gambhir, Hbhajan, Zak. These guys are way past their prime and yet we still pick them on merit. Sachin too is a pale shadow of his past, but at least in his case his mere presence lends solidity and courage to the 2 young middle order bats pujara and kohli. Yuvraj's selection is also odd..MSD himself has been pretty mediocre with the bat. Ishants bowling is not up to the mark too. all in all a tame selection

Posted by snbirdi on (November 5, 2012, 12:24 GMT)

All in all, the selection is not bad, except for the two throw away wickets of Sehwag, who doesn't belong anywhere near Test cricket is going to be a giant bonus wicket for England in all the matches he plays and Vijay, who frankly doesn't even deserve to be called a professional cricketer.

Posted by Haleos on (November 5, 2012, 12:23 GMT)

Cant believe Badri supporters. Yes he was unlucky when young but when he did get chances he looked out of sorts for Internationals. Much like the great opener since Gavaskar Mr Murali Vijayi. Yuvi is 100 times better than Badri. God know what tiwary needs to do to get selected. Irfan unlucky as well. Ishant did not deserve a place either. Get a feeling Sandip Patil is soon going to go Cheeka way. Hopeless selection committee. Do they even bother to watch Ranji and India A games. @Vijayi Fans - I am not against TN. Mukund would have been a much better choice than Vijayi. Atleast he sis young and talented and performed reasonably well.

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 12:23 GMT)

It appears we do not need a selection committee at all.. waste of money.. better let the players select themselves!! or more appropriately, like the colonial days, for a change, they could have allowed the English Team to select our team.. perhaps they would have selected a few who would put up semblence of some fight, which I reckon would be liked them for some challenge while on field.. rather than all the chasers of the leather on the side with age in late thirties!!

Posted by spinkingKK on (November 5, 2012, 12:15 GMT)

Good selection. The selectors seems to have used some of their experience in selecting the side. It is imperative that Yuvraj should be in the side with all the committment and hunger he is showing. Obviously, Raina has got to give way for him. Being young, Raina can always come back and I am sure he will. Vijay's omission from the squad has been very unfair. Vijay has got a lot of potential as a batsman and being an opening batsman, he should be selected as the backup opener. Also, he is a very good fielder. Habhajan is also trying to prove his worth and it is the right time to give him one more opportunity. Only selection questionable is that of Ishant. His return hasn't been anywhere close to spectacular. He wasn't setting the world on fire before that either. However, even before that, he looked like the only future India has had in the fast bowling. But, just giving him chances are chances is not going to help him find the motivation. I would have selected Sreesanth instead.

very gud selection.selectors can't convince each and every person.they have put sehwag and gauti under some pressure to perform.at least they are trying something.

Posted by Dhanvanth on (November 5, 2012, 12:00 GMT)

as expected poor selection!!!! rahane is a better than middle order bat...vijay is never dependable!!!! it is already time for tiwary and badri to get a look-in in the squad....sehwag, zaheer sachin pls make way for your Next-Gen:( my squad would hav been: gambhir, rahane, pujara, kohli, badri/tiwary, dhoni, ash, ojha, yadav, aoran, ishant............. pankaj singh is a good pace prospect!!!! i dont see quality selection here..mere politics!!!!

Posted by Cricketfan11111 on (November 5, 2012, 11:58 GMT)

Why all these CSK, Srinivasan bashing? Isn't Tamil Nadu part of India? Players are selected on merit and selector can't pick 22 players to satisfy all the fans. Murali Vijay had a very good domestic season scoring a 200 and few 100s. He is standby for out of form and injured openers. Tiwary is not an opener.

Posted by thecricketcritic on (November 5, 2012, 11:55 GMT)

M Tiwari should've got a look in. Poor decision to leave him out and pick Vijay. Hope Rahane plays the first test, such a talent shouldn't be wasted on the sidelines.....

Why no Lionel Messi, why no Ronaldo, why no Salman Khan, why no Santa Singh, why no Banta Singh in the squad !! Billiant batting by Vijay for India A gets him a spot, great bowling by Bhajji against Hyderabad get him in the team !! why only stop at selecting 15 players why not 20 , new selection comitee your wisdom and rationale is just too much !! best of luck to Dortmund,Malaga,Shaktar,Ajax, Barca for the CL matches this week ...

Posted by ShortGully on (November 5, 2012, 11:45 GMT)

Dhoni is not a big fan of Changing batting orders in the squad, he MOSTLY prefers settled squad who knows their position and role clear..But , I think this time , we can expect some change, I prefer Rahane open with Gauti , Sehwag down the order may be below sachin and Vijay as reserve opener..! Bajji wont be in playing eleven..!

Posted by cricketkumar on (November 5, 2012, 11:45 GMT)

Indian cricket can never change. Harbhajan Singh should never have been picked. And Murali Vijay is a proven failure as well. Why pick such players again and again. Singh's career is been long over. Zaheer and Sachin shouldn't be in the side either.

Posted by ssruprai on (November 5, 2012, 11:44 GMT)

This is a well balanced side. The time to experiment was against New Zealand. Then they could have tested few youngsters but the previous selection committee failed to do so. If Manoj Tiwari was included in place of Murli Vijay, it would have been best possible combination. Current selection committee couldn't really have afforded to drop most senior players and bring in untested players for an important home series, specially after 0-4 loss against the same team. It should be a gradual process to rebuild the team. All in all this is a good team, at least on paper.

Posted by HyderabadiFlick on (November 5, 2012, 11:42 GMT)

As expected UV in the team. Hopeless Ishant Sharma again in team, they must have selected Pankaj Singh from Rajastan instead. Good that selection team got rid of Suresh Raina, it is already very late. Harbhajan Singh must be given some more chances. Murali Vijay is getting a chance in a team which already has Ajinkya.India must have gone with Dinesh Karthik who will give a wicket keeping and good batting option if Dhoni gets injured or dropped. Sachin haters, what if Tendulkar plays an year or two. When he was at his peak Indian team screwed so many close matches because of poor bowling or batting. It does not impact if he is the team when India is winning regularly. And the losses against England and Australia recently are not because of Sachin, the whole team did not do well. - Jai Hind

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 11:41 GMT)

Not a bad selection! Surprised that Murali Vijay is back. Raina's exclusion was expected. But they should've tried Manoj Tiwary, he's a really good player.

Posted by SudharsanVM on (November 5, 2012, 11:38 GMT)

Could have been meaningful if MTiwary and IPathan instead of Vijay and bhajji. Good selection overall. one backup opener, one backup miidle order, one backup spinner and one backup quick.

Final 11 should include SEHWAG & ZAHEER both most UNFIT men in the team

VERY GOOD SELECTION.. Mohinder Amarnath was right in 80's and it holds good even today when the selection committee is having his own colleagues / team mates..!!

GG and sehwag now knows that they cant take their place for granted. They have immediate openers in MVijay and rahane waiting. If they fail to perform, they will be out of the team for atleast a match. Nice wake up call by selectors on GG and sehwag. That should be the motive of selectors.

Posted by dinuhebbar on (November 5, 2012, 11:32 GMT)

New Selection Panel, but old habbits die hard.... No chance for in form players (Manoj Tiwari, Staurt Binny etc). Once again players are selected based on past history rather than current form. Nothing new can be expected from this rugged system.

Posted by Tigg on (November 5, 2012, 11:30 GMT)

Bhaji? Really? Because 4-12 against a largely different XI in a completely different format shows he can play test cricket...

Maybe he's in for his batting?

Posted by Chetan007 on (November 5, 2012, 11:29 GMT)

A very stupid selection of Vijay and Harbhajan. Neither of them showed sing of their form. I'll bet foe Mukund than to go for Vijay. Instead of Harbhajan, I would have selected Shahbaj Nadeem. We were at rebuilding state. We need some of new guys to groom and take place vacated by yester stars.I would also go for selecting Pankaj Singh since in Indian condition spinners were going to make bigger impact than pacers, then why not go for new one than to select a half match fit player who might again breakdown during match at a very crucial stage.

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 11:27 GMT)

Pankaj singh & badri/kaif in place of bhajji & vijay

Posted by goldenpower on (November 5, 2012, 11:26 GMT)

England team batting & bowling performance is high in test cricket. so we strength our batting side which useful to make a draw.We will prefer irfan, vinay kumar, amit mishra, they are fighting tail enders.

Posted by Avi56 on (November 5, 2012, 11:24 GMT)

Murali vijay is not in such great form that he deserves to play for india....Robin Bist , rajasthans player, has done such a great job in Ranji...yet he isnot recognised...focus back on IPL over Ranji for Test utterly stupid....

Posted by GRVJPR on (November 5, 2012, 11:24 GMT)

Don't go by Harbhajan Singhs Form in Ranji Games. Indian Domestic players are excellent against spin. England will find him mighty tough on these pitches. We saw what happened in recent T-20 in sri lanka. They don't seem to have a clue against him. Gambhir should have been dropped!

Posted by indicricket on (November 5, 2012, 11:18 GMT)

I seriously think Pankaj Singh should get a look in. On form he is far better than some of the fast bowlers in the team.

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 11:17 GMT)

Manoj Tiwary, should be the man in stead of Murali Vijay!

Posted by ashankar on (November 5, 2012, 11:14 GMT)

About Harbhajan, i think our Ranji Teams' batsmen play spin better than the International Players in England. So Bhajji going wicketless here is not a hurdle for him to spin a web around the English lol

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 11:11 GMT)

My Playing XI- MS Dhoni , Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Cheteshwar Pujara, R Ashwin, Pragyan Ojha, Ishant Sharma, Zaheer Khan. Though would have loved Ajinkya Rahane to play in XI, but no place for him....

Posted by ashankar on (November 5, 2012, 11:11 GMT)

@Haleos Okay whom do you suggest for reserve opener?

Posted by sony_sr on (November 5, 2012, 11:09 GMT)

only 2 bad selections. amit mishra would have been a better choice than bhaji as eng are kwown to collapse against leg spinners. if amit mishras form is a problem bhaji is struggling to take even 1 wicket. vijay may play well in india, but he will for sure be a failure in overseas conditions. ajinkya rahane should have been considered as third opener and badri should have continued in middle order. but dropping raina is a very good decision. anybody who knows the basics of cricket can easily understand that he is not made for test cricket.

Posted by ganirules on (November 5, 2012, 11:08 GMT)

Viru,Gauti,Pujara,Sachin,Yuvi,Vijay\RahaneMSD,Ash,Zak,ishant,ojha, this may be the squad if Zak was not fit then a head ache for Dhoni in bowling department, India should look to bring bowlers forward as we are lacking in bench strength in bowling their plenty of batsman from IND but we dont have even a single bowler who can terror the opposition still believing on medium peace and spinners to take wickets is not so good in this era of cricket.

Posted by saikrish246 on (November 5, 2012, 11:06 GMT)

inclusion of vijay and harbajan is extremly bad desicons.inplace of vijay they should take raina or manoj and in place of harbajan they shold take dinda.

Murali Vijay is such a waste at the Test level. He doesn't even deserve the bench!

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 11:04 GMT)

Vijay, Ishant ,harbajhan ??? Harbajhan's selection can be justified as 3rd spinner but Ishant & Vijay .?? This is DISHEARTENING for people like Tiwary ,Mukund , Irfan & Praveen who are performing in Ranji Trophy & domestic tournaments . Newly-appointed selection panel, headed by Sandeep Patil is even worst .As well all know Zaheer & Shewag have fitness issues ..jut hope they don't get into playing XI.

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 11:03 GMT)

Posted by Sarthak1305 on (November 5, 2012, 11:02 GMT)

Well people are making too much of Harbhajan being in the team, he wont get to play especially if Ojha and Ashwin perform well, he is just there as backup and so is Vijay and sadly Rahane who actually deserves to be in the playing 11

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 11:02 GMT)

harbhajan is waste bowler in the world at present time.

Posted by nilesh91 on (November 5, 2012, 11:01 GMT)

Who are asking Mukund for Murali please notice Mukund is not part of CSK anymore (he was released last week) so he doesn't fits the selection criteria.

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 11:00 GMT)

its a good selection , murli vijay is the only doubtful selection ,we are having 4 openers ,this either means that one of Viru or Rahane is not in the team as opener or they are just showing viru or gauti that perform or persish by showing them their replacements are ready .I see some people are doubting Bhajjis selection but he is better than amit mishra ,rahul sharma and piyush chawla anyday ,those people are in no kind of form and bhajji is a reserve spinner ,i will be shock if he is in playing 11 ahead of either Ashwin or Ojha

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 11:00 GMT)

Ojha's bowling figures 2/201. Not a world-class performance by him either. Let's face it Bhajji didn't get a fair chance to prove himself at home-conditions.

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 10:57 GMT)

hope harbhajan plays both the matches and take 0 wikets.we can finally bid him goodbye.

Posted by Vnott on (November 5, 2012, 10:57 GMT)

Harbhajan Singh, Ishant Sharma, M Vijay - are all poor selections. Vijay does not hv the technique to play in test matches or fast bowling. Clearly a short term selection or a reflection on Mukund and Dhawan not standing up. Dinda deserved a look in ahead of Ishant especially with multiple good performances recently. Ishant fitness is not very clear. Bhajji - perplexing though to his credit he may take wickets if India play all 3 spinners or maybe the selectors want to give him a new lease of life........

Posted by Naresh28 on (November 5, 2012, 10:53 GMT)

Rahane could tried as an opener.Selection of VIJAY over TIWARI is bad. The search for openers continues. Gambhir & Shewag have failed us constantly. Nadeem is a proven spinner who cleans bowls his victims - so Bhajji not good. Pankaj Singh is one who has never been given a decent run in team India.

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 10:47 GMT)

Rohit Sharma should have played ahead of proven test failures in Vijay, Yuvraj & Raina. Taking Ishant ahead of Pankaj Singh and Aaron is also absolutely totally wrong. How can Vijay get selected ahead of Chand & Mukund????

Posted by Follow_thru on (November 5, 2012, 10:46 GMT)

My playing XI & batting order: Rahane, Gambhir, Pujara, Tendulkar, Kohli, Sehwag, Dhoni, Ashwin, Zaheer, Ojha, Yadav. This will allow Rahane to debut and Sehwag to drop into the middle order. Don't need additional batting - so no Yuvraj. And there's sufficient spin bowling with Ashwin, Ojha and Sehwag.

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 10:46 GMT)

Well, as usual criticism for Harbhajan, i have seen him bowling today at Mohali, he is bowling pretty well, at his best. I know he will rock this year, 3 for 50 in the second innings where ojha has a remarkable figure of 2 for 201

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 10:43 GMT)

Aaron should be in squad, why Zaheer is there?

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 10:43 GMT)

nyc team selection.. but i think the three ashwin prajyan ojka and bhajji are off spinners.. the selectors had think abt a leg spinner like talented amit mishraa also

Posted by CricketMaan on (November 5, 2012, 10:39 GMT)

With the XI being VS, GG, CP, SRT, VK, YV, MSD, RA, ZK, PO, UY..12TH man Rahane...why not release others to play Ranji? Also, does anyone here think that our stars who failed in the 1st Ranji match will play between 9-12? No rather they will be resting besides the pool while Eng XI will sweat again in Ahemedabad to prepare for Tests.

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 10:39 GMT)

Irfan 100 wickets in 29 matches is out of the team and Zaheer with 291 wickets in 85 matches is spearhead of Indian pace department. Raina with an average of 28 in 17 matches is a contender for six slot and Yuvraj with average of 34 is future of the team but Irfan with an average of 32 is nowhere in the sight. Vijay, Yuvi, Raina should not be ever considered for selection in test team. Dhoni should be the captain for one dayers but does he deserve his place in Test and T20s.

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 10:34 GMT)

I had lot more expectation from the new selection panel - headed by Sandeep Patil. Some players who do not deserve a place in this squad are: 1. Harbhajan Singh 2. Ishant Sharma Instead I would have opted for 1. Irfan Pathan - instead of Ishant Sharma and 2. Picked up a young spinner and groomed him instead of Harbhajan Singh. I want Harbhajan Singh to play Ranji and regain form before being picked in the squad. Some radical thinking while selecting the final 11 - taking care of the brittle middle order. The batting order would read as follows: Gambhir, Sehwag, Pujara, Sachin, Virat, Yuvraj, Dhoni, Ashwin, Oja, Yadav, Zaheer. Sehwag is more comfortable in middle order and he should be given that space - once Sachin retires - hopefully after the away series in South Africa.

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 10:31 GMT)

if u think practically..i think india needs a new captain in test format..dhoni is very good in oneday and t20(even though his strike rate in t20 is among the last four in the sqad)..but in test india need a better technique wckt keepr batsman..such as wriddiman saha and dinesh kartik,,if india want to win series in foregn countries like in sf,eng and aus ,,

Posted by dhoni_sachin_fan on (November 5, 2012, 10:30 GMT)

sad that badrinath has been left out. the bloke deserved at least 5-10 test matches for his domestic performance over years. happy that raina has been left out. he is no test match material. i was expecting abhinav to be selected as a reserve opener. murali vijay is a surprise. i hope dhoni plays only one of sehwag and gambhir (unlikely though) and plays either vijay or rahane as the other opener. It is time we groom replacements for our ageing under-performing openers.

Posted by PravinJP10 on (November 5, 2012, 10:29 GMT)

Good selection by the selectors. To the many people out there who are crying out for selecting M Vijay and Bhajj. If they haven't performed well in recent times in domestic cricket or international cricket, what about shewag, Gambhir and sachin? Did sachin shine well against NZ at home conditions? No, right. So why don't we people accept what the fact is. But i strongly disagree with the inclution of I sharma and Zaheer. I Pathan could have in the team.

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 10:29 GMT)

Avery fine balanced team except for one, ie, M Vijay. his selection leaves doubts of partisan sectorial considerations in ones mind. otherwise a rational one. could have had Dinda for Vijay.Hope the team does well

Posted by Buckers410 on (November 5, 2012, 10:27 GMT)

Irfan Pathan should be there. Manoj Tiwary is a way better bat than Rahane and Vijay put together. England should be; Cook (c), Trott, Bell, Pietersen, Patel, Bairstow, Prior (wk), Broad, Anderson, Panesar

Posted by caught_knott_bowled_old on (November 5, 2012, 10:24 GMT)

This squad is only for 2 tests which is great. That means Sehwag and Gambhir better perform. The readers should be focussing on Sehwag and Gambhir who are the weakest link in the batting order (not on Bhajji and Vijay - they won't even be in the playing XI).

Bhajji's inclusion for the first 2 tests is certainly a good decision. He is experienced and the opposition fear him. It is upto him whether he lives up to that or just perishes. If he perishes, then he should be dropped and a left arm spinner or a leggie should be brought in. If India play Ashwin & Bhajji, there is just no variety at all.

Selection of Harbajan seems a step in the backward direction and even worse, it shows the bench strength of India in the art which we are supposed to be masters - Spin bowling. Are there no spinners good enough to replace him at the moment? Or is it just plain bad decision by the new selectors?

two mistakes here one Irfan is not part of team and second Harbajan in part of team, yuvi-ashwin-ohja are enough for spin dpt and no need for harbajan. doni should work on his batting form in test and really need for team.

Selectors have done a good job, under the circumstances The induction of Murali Vijay is a step in the right direction. Dindia by his present form, could hve got a look in ahead of Ishant. Raina did not deliver in the opportunities he got in Tests and Yuvraj definitely merits a place. Instead of a second off-spinner Harbhajan (who is off-colour) they could have gone for either Amit Mishra or Rahul Sharma, leg spinners to add variety in the attack. But overall, full marks to the Selectors for doing a neat job - the induction of Vijay means he will be breathing the necks of Gautam Gambhir and Sehwag for a place., Rahane in the middle order is the right choocer

Its a 'Silly Point', 'Short leg' selection. Vijay and Rahane only in the team coz SRT, GG, VS, Zak cannot field for all 5 days. These two will be substitutes are to stand at Short Leg or Silly. If Tiwary is not in the mix, then its better coz he can play Ranj rather than warming benchi. Bhajji is purely in the squad as he troubled English in SL, else would not be there though would be intresting to see if he is picked ahead of Ashwin and Ohja!! This practise of selecting 16 for home game is ridiculous.

2 places have gone to non deserving players, Bhajji & Vijay. Patil and Co could have picked best performing players from ongoing Ranji Trophy.

Posted by JaganDashers on (November 5, 2012, 9:31 GMT)

S.Patil might be an agressive player, but surely doesnt seems to show that in his selection. they are not good enough to make bold decisions. Why Zaheer? who is not even fit to play 4 day cricket... bringing in harbhajan is serious comedy. He is not even capable of taking wickets against weak hyd team (barring laxman)... This was the best chance for them to try a new spinner. Opportunity lost. So does the inclusion of Ishant sharma. Murali vijay selection is something out of the blue... but selectors would've went purely based on domestic performances (where he scored 250+ in irani trophy, followed by 90+ in league stage and 150+ in challenger trophy final). Happy for Rahane, but poor guy may not get his chance in playing 11. Also feel for badri... he is someone who should be given a fair run(5-10 tests) before dropping.. Where is manoj tiwary? another unlucky guy(badrinath) in the making...

why M Vjay? and why not W Jaffer?

India took M Vijay for WI tour and miserebly failed to impress selectors and he is not at all in form in any format. W Jaffer is made for tests and selectors are ignoring him, that is pitty for team India.

Well Srinivasan will have one CSK player in the team anyhow!Mukand would have been better than Vijay..on present form, why a semi fit Zaheer & not inform Pankaj or Dinda...will they get their when they have passed the age...Why two openers when Shewag & Gambhir are certainties..why not Manoj Tiwari? what wrong has he done ..after being in the sidelines with no fault of his own & the highest scorer in just concluded India A match against England....just he comes from east..Give Dhoni a break and try Parthiv or inform Saha.the case is simple Srinivasn will have his man.Binny & chair to support(Viajy).Sandip Patil will fight for Rahane & Zaheer...What is Delhi based Saba Karim east selector doing sleeping or giving thanks to BCCI for naming him in selection panel..atleast Vikram Rathore could get in not so sucessfull Ishant Sharma and Harbhajan in squad.Pathetic regional & face based selection than performance...

Wow what a great piece of selection. My advance wishes for team england. Surely they going to win this series by 4-0. Hehe bhaji, dhoni use for nothing in this series. So sad about Indian guyzz. :-P

Posted by meastrostroke on (November 5, 2012, 9:24 GMT)

@all Mvijay bashers, there is another person called Harbajan singh who has 0 wickets in his last ranji match and did nothing to merit but mediocre at his best in the squad is selected. Vijay scored big hundreds in duleep trophy alongside shikar dhawan. He has decent test match record in his earlier days apart from WI tour. Kudos to selectors for selecting 4 specialist openers. This would send GG and viru, the much needed alarming signal. They have nothing but big mouth. good to see Mtiwary released. No use of making him to warm benches.

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 9:24 GMT)

Most of the selections are ok except Bhajji,Ishant & Vijay. Pankaj Singh should have been selected ahead of Ishant as a backup bowler on basis of his performance against Bengal, already we have Yuvi,Ashwin & Ojha as spinners so team may have selected irfan/manoj for 6th position. I think the double hundred made by Vijay in Irani Trophy has accounted for his selection, however given the recent performance of Mukund against Poms...he should have been selected ahead of Vijay.

Posted by akheel_aa on (November 5, 2012, 9:24 GMT)

Absolute Rubbish. The expectation was to lay the platform for future. It is baffling to see the selection of Harbhajan & Ishant (where is the performance?), Zaheer (Unfit) and Vijay (a total non-performer). It would have been a good bet to leave out Zaheer and bring Irfan (Good performance over a season in various formats). Yuvraj is a welcome, but will they prefer him over Ajinkya? THE BIGGEST OF ALL, what's Dhoni doing in Tests? Where is the performances to command a place in the team and he has ran out of ideas to handle Test Situations. Losing 8 tests and continuing? What does this shows? Sehwas has made the intent to play in middle order and was waiting for VVS and Dravid to move out of middle order. He has been failing against new ball and in on-going Ranji match he played in middle order and scored a hundred. Why not have Ajinkya and Gambhir open and Sehwag play in middle order, instead of having Yuvraj there? Total Dumb selection.

Posted by drnaveed on (November 5, 2012, 9:23 GMT)

i don't think this strong Indian eleven will find it difficult to defeat this England side 4 - 0 in this series.england side is vulnerable to spin bowling as always, like we are vulnerable against good quality swing bowling.yes, i agree irfan pathan should have been considered. welcome back yuvraj.

Posted by dev01 on (November 5, 2012, 9:23 GMT)

even wat will yuvraj do..what has he done for last 10 yrs in test team (in and out)..these guys still not concluded that yuvraj and raina are not test batsmen..even if they bat well on indian soil, they had always failed abroad..so y this selection again and again..hw long we will tolerate ishant sharma..get dinda instead...dnt exclude people like rohit sharma on basis of one day and t20 form...

Posted by superdoc87 on (November 5, 2012, 9:22 GMT)

My playing XI would be(in batting order)- G.Gambhir, V.Sehwag, C.Pujara, S.Tendulkar, V.kohli, Yuvraj Singh, M S Dhoni, Harbhajan Singh, R.Ashwin, Zaheer Khan, Umesh Yadav.........my reason for not selecting P.ojha is that yuvraj would be doing the left arm spinners role

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 9:20 GMT)

Forget about all other things..I really feel sad for Manoj Tiwary..I have been seeing that guy warm the benches for more than 3 years now and everytime he as got an opportunity..he has scored most of the times.. Kohli and Tiwary can be the mainstay on Indian batting in Future unless the selectors frustrate and demoralize him by not giving him any chance at all...

As per Bhajji..the only reason he is in is because he destroyed England in World t20 which I think isn't justified..as it is test level..

Murali Vijay is in just because they needed an opener..and since Raina doesn't fill in the spot, they went for Vijay which is not right because you are pushing Rahane out of the picture..or atleast they could have replaced Raina with a left handed opener since we already have a right handed opener replacement as Rahane..

Rest of the squad is Okay.. Pacers won't be having mush to do here..Yadav bowled a great spell in Ranji opener so he deserved it..cant say much for other quickies.

We understand Raina, Yuvraj and Tiwari under contention. There was so much of hype behind the all 3 of them Selection before India A vs England Match. Now, We don't understand how Bhajji, Ishant and Murli Vijay Came into Picture. Neither of them had a Good Season. Ishant was injured for last 8 months. Played Domestic Season only since couple of Months. Murli Vijay is a Flat Track Bully. He went to Champions League with a Excellect 200 Runs on his Back. Failed miserably in Swing Condition. For God Sake Pull Sehwag in Middle Order and Save the Early Blushes. We have A good Opener in Rahane. Excellent Technique. Selector have selected this Bunch of Jokers only on Pure "Emotions" coming from Each Zone. Selectors as usual have taken a wrong step again. Not Looking for Future.

Welcome Back Yuvi but where is Irfan & Vinay Kumar....

Posted by jmoses on (November 5, 2012, 9:12 GMT)

As usual Indian selectors have made some decisions which can be explained only by them. Batting unit looks strong as usual but its the bowling department that lacks some strength. Selectors have decided that spinners will take 20 wickets and there is no need for extra pacer, and I think this is where they have gone wrong. Keeping Zaheer's fitness in mind they should have opted for an extra pacer in the form of Irfan or Agarkar who are playing well for their domestic sides instead of another spinner. Since they have selected Harbhajan in the squad, will he make into the final 11?? And if he does who will sit out??

Posted by cric_freak2012 on (November 5, 2012, 9:12 GMT)

@Love_tanmay this clearly shows that you dont have any knowledge about the game. Vijay has been scoring consistently in domestic put raina into domestic he doesnt score any big hundreds for ur info vijay scored hundred against australia 2010 he is not ordinary player to be counted down no one is doing favoritism to any region its we people carry on this baggage of favoritism without proper knowledge

irfan phatan , uthappa, m tiwary deserves place instead of m vijay, bhajji, zaheer

Posted by meastrostroke on (November 5, 2012, 9:10 GMT)

Ahh. Now india can take 20 english wickets given that they are weak against spin. yuvi-ashwin-ohja forms a good combo for dhoni. I'd like to have some legspinning bowler to have some variety. But mishra and piyush are comparatively useless in any conditions. On the batting front,i'm bit worried about middle order, with no-one has the capability to play with tail-enders. I wuould ask sachin to bat at no.6 for this purpose. on the fielding front, dhoni has huge issues in placing fielders. Eight fielders of 11 Ash,zak, ishant, ojha, yuvi,gg,sehwag, sachin, are as good as chris martin's batting. God help dhoni. Better to have rahane/vijay instead of gambhir.

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 9:09 GMT)

why not irfan?? what he have to do to prove him as all rounder? or indian test team dont want any fast bowler all rounder in the team? i can bet M vijay is not going to play any game so no issue any raina have to go some day.. he is good for T20 n ODI.

Wonder if the selectors are watching rajasthan ranji matches... Pankaj singh is way better than any of the bowlers selected... Maybe not in pace, but then, the faster u bowl, the quicker it goes to the boundary, as the case of umesh yadav...

Posted by avmd on (November 5, 2012, 9:06 GMT)

I am an English team supporter and I like this selection, particularly happy to see Harbhajam, Vijay and Zaheer in the team, it would be a "dram team" if they all made the 11 but I'm not too optimistic they will include Harbhajan and Vijay in eleven, but still if Zaheer played and got unfit after bowling 5-6 overs in 1st innings, we will play against 10 players, great.

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 9:05 GMT)

I have been keenly looking forward to the incumbent Indian cricket selection commitee's decision making since they took over. Though the 'no spinner strategy' was widely discussed by cricket fraternity for various reasons (smart thinking/spirit of the game), I am not really impressed with the selection for the first two tests. Clearly Harbhajan has been selected based on his past performance but not on form. His 29 wickets against Eng in the past with two five wicket hauls has favored him. Yes the alternatives like Amit/Rahul/Chawla are either not good on form or unavailable for selection. But what about other young spinners? The fact that MV and AR are selected means that AR is being looked at as a middle-order batsman. I seriously feel sorry for MT. He would be wondering "What more I need to do to get into Indian cricket team?" Vijay has been good this season, but against Eng in warm-up match his weakness against swinging delivery was exposed and MT showed his mettle.

Getting Irfan Pathan in would have been a good option,He has improved his speed from around 120s to mid 130s and is swinging the ball again..plus gives an extra batting option so you can go with 5 bowlers

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 9:03 GMT)

Good job by the selectors , we will rock with this new team .Good to see yuvraj back and harbhajan ''.Harbhajan is an exceptional bowler and he has served the country well. He should be in the scheme of things if India has to do well against Australia and England who are coming later this year. He will complement the current two spinners (Ravichandran Ashwin and Pragyan Ojha)," Kumble said.

Rahane who is in the team is not getting chances, how can manoj tiwary expect to get even selected... U two are not from chennai, boys... No point in playing for KKR or MI.. CSK is the real deal....

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 9:00 GMT)

I seriously dont understand people's opinion against the inclusion of Murali Vijay. He scored 266 in the match against Rajastan, playing for Rest of India. That's the highest score in the Duleep Trophy matches. He scored a couple of centuried in the domestic ODI tournament as well. To me, any new member into the squad should have something significant in domestic matches. Harbhajan doesn't have such a backing to his inclusion. Definitely, Yuvraj, Vijay and Rahane deserve to be in the squad. Please who comment here, please follow domestic cricket also, to know who deserves what... dont just comment on their previous international performances...

Posted by satish619chandar on (November 5, 2012, 9:00 GMT)

Rahane should have come in as opener. Why should we waste his form? Vijay is the best opener on current form available i think and he came in as reserve. But i really wanted Rahane to be there as reserve opener. Bhajji didn't do anything to merit a place but the only advantage he has is, he is the best of the worst. The likes of Mishra and Chawla are not even upto Bhajji's standards. Ishant getting nod ahead of Dinda and Ifran is also not that good. probably, he is picked for his experience as he could be useful if Zak is not fit. Still, i would have preferred in Irfan for Ishant, Dinda for Bhajji(We don't need any reserve spinner in the 15. Ashwin and Ojha are going to be sure starters and spinners usually dont get injured off field) and Manoj Tiwary for Vijay with Rahane as reserve opener.

What about Vijay, he has no experience what so ever and they choose him ahead of an experienced batsman (Raina) in a very important test series? Where have the selectors' brains gone? I think they forgot to bring them back to India. Bad selection.

LOL at harbhajan's inclusion!! Dinda or Irfan could have been selected ahead of Ishant, anyway we will see, this is a good team when u consider the playing 11

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 8:54 GMT)

I think Vijay's inclusion in the team is a response to fears that Sehwag may get injured and thus there is a need for an opening batsmen, even though there are a few in the wings. As a CSK and TN fan I asm glad for Vijay's inclusion in the team, but am wary because it can prove to be calamatous if he is no used in the right way. For everyone here who talks of politics in cricket, don't forget that for years and years, South Indian cricketers have taken a huge back seat to their North Indian counterparts, and we sat silently and waited, while now we have one or two players selected and there is such a huge outrage. What I cannot understand is Bhajji's inclusion, we don't need anymore of his insipid spin bowling, rather give Yuvraj the pads and the ball, he seems to be in peak form trying to get rid of the weight in his shoulders. We needed Raina in this team as well as another back up spinner option. Our bowling sure looks weak heading into the first test.

Rahane & Mumbai would be thankful to selectors as they didn't pick him as reserve opener..otherwise again he would have been left warming up the benches..now at least Mumbai can utilise his services.. not surprised by the selection..but disappointed.. as compare to this Indian selection board,, Aussies are much more frank in their approach. when Watson had injury scares they openly dropped him. but in India Sehwag and Zaheer both have had injury scares in their recent outing, and there is every chance that we again might see one of two or even both walking back with an injury, yet selectors picked them just for the sake of making the team stronger on the paper at least. pathetic.

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 8:44 GMT)

Zaheer is not good for test cricket now he is nt fit and also not able to pick the wicket also and Bajiii selection really ridiculous the person who is not able to pic wic in ranjii match is in Indian team such a shame for selectors.

Once they were giving expert comment in News channel (Saba kareem, patil etc.) that time they are saying bhajjiii is not in form and zaheer is not fit sachin should retire, sehwag is not in form should find some new talent but atlast they will pick same 11 playing past 1 yr and not performing

seriously don't understand the logic of announcing a 15 member squad for an home game.

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 8:39 GMT)

Apart from dropping Raina and bringing Harbhajan in I dont think this is a bad squad. U can't have a player going from in the team to out of the squad through one series unless they had an abysmally bad series (i.e. Shaun Marsh against India). Raina on the contrary didn't play so badly and even if he isnt in the starting line up he ought to be in the squad. In the mean time, what exactly has Harbhajan done to get a recall? Apart from that the squad seems perfect. Vijay more then deserved this chance as he has been stunning so far this season with the bat.

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 8:39 GMT)

Two off-spinners which is effectively one because both are half grade. Too bad India does not have a single quality spinner in this squad. Well they will do well on Indian pitches I guess. Irfan would have been better than Ishant Sharma. I think selectors have not much choice as Indian domestic circuit does not have even few good players.

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 8:38 GMT)

realy bad selection by comitte wht mvijay and ishanth doing instead of them irfan and some good batsman should selected its ridiculous the man in form in both bat and bowl irfan is dropped patel get bad impression in the beginning itself.

Posted by vensim on (November 5, 2012, 8:38 GMT)

Do the selectors have guts to bring Bajji on a tour outside sub-continent? Or do they have guts to drop him straight away after the home series irrespective of high well he performs? (Even if he has taken 15-20 wickets). He is not going to win you test matches outside India and whatever he achieves in India would be achieved by any spinner anyways. Don't get deceived by his performances in India selectors!!!

As expected lots of poor comments on M Vijay selection.

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 8:31 GMT)

Vijay Selection is totally Unfair even he not performed in practice matche and also rahane is there as reserve opener, they should pick Manoj Tiwari.Vijay Selection showed still zone wise selection is happing not talentwise.

Posted by symsun on (November 5, 2012, 8:29 GMT)

On behalf of all fans, i would say definitely all fans are fed up with these selections. Its high time BCCI and Selection panel to show some maturity. This just showed that we are no where planning for the future and the next world cups. We are focused only on putting faces of big names on screen and favor TV channels to generate as much revenue as possible. Poor Attitude!

Posted by cv-joglekar on (November 5, 2012, 8:29 GMT)

not a bad squad..Zaheer should be rested for 1 test to prove his match fitness. Harbhajan should be on stand by.. Murali Vijay hardly deserved the selection...Ajinkya will warm the bench till one of the opener fails for two consecutive test matches

Probable squad: Sehwag, Gambhir, Pujara at three, Tendulkar, Virat, Yuvraj, MS Dhoni, Ashwin (as an all rounder), Oza, Ishant, Umesh Yadav

Posted by WickyRoy.paklover on (November 5, 2012, 8:27 GMT)

Even our "UNDER.PRFORMING" UMAR AKMAL has a better test record than ovr.hyped Yuvi,Raina.lolz

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 8:27 GMT)

hahaha badri of csk replaced by murli of csk selectors are making amends for wat dey did in wt20 where there was not a single backup opener now we have 2 hopefully csk will play test series by nxt year so selector are making comfortable step by step

Posted by ksgcha on (November 5, 2012, 8:26 GMT)

terrific.....I think all the practice matches and domestic tournaments should be stopped because whatever tournaments are played and irrespective of the performances of budding youngsters, always typical "favorite" players will get selected....seriously can't imagine Manoj Tiwary is not even in the 15-men squad after his fantastic innings against England's serious bowling attack

Posted by Cricketfan101 on (November 5, 2012, 8:26 GMT)

Poor lad monoj tiwari how many runs does he need to score

Posted by Meteora84 on (November 5, 2012, 8:25 GMT)

why is Irfan not in the team- he has done very well in T20, ODI and Ranji- he deserves to be in the team more than anybody else- and he is the only genuine swing bowler and he can bat too. Other than that- I am happy with the team- except that in reality- we do not have good genuinely fast bowlers and please don't blame the pitches for this- as pakistan has similar pitches and produced excellent fast bowlers. also would have preferred Badrinath instead of M vijay

Posted by TJAPUKAI on (November 5, 2012, 8:24 GMT)

Too many back ups for batsmen whereas only three pace bowlers. How pathetic.Zaheer likely to get injured and Ishant Sharma likely to be part of the playing XI eventhough he didn't prove anything in the first class matches. What does Praveen Kumar and I Pathan need to prove to be part of Test XI squad

Posted by Rajeshj on (November 5, 2012, 8:23 GMT)

Looks like Chika was a far better selector than Sandeep patil... why was Harbajhan selected and how come Zaheer selected when he could not even bowl in Ranji matches because he was not fit.. look at Aussies, Watson had slight discomfort and he was immediately pulled out of first test... but we persist with a 35-year old bowler who could not he even bowl 6 or 7 overs in a practice match.. looks like we are heading towards even more illogical and worser days due to this selection panel..

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 8:23 GMT)

Load of bull... same team again... Harbhajan... what has he done of merit to be even in this team... poor selection.

Posted by half_blood-prince on (November 5, 2012, 8:23 GMT)

Selection of vijay and bhajji is bad.manoj tiwary will be missed..if they include bhajji then they should ve include irfan so that he can bat at no. 7 and we can play 3 spinners bt now i think bhaji will only warm the benches and good to see raina out of the team.first test should ve gone to tiwary and if he hadnt performed then yuvi should ve got the chance..at last vijay, rahane and bhajji..none of them will get chance in the first test..

Posted by WickyRoy.paklover on (November 5, 2012, 8:22 GMT)

Uncle bhaji stil gets to play?lolz

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 8:22 GMT)

this is so unfair with manoj tiwari,,that murli vijay has been prefered over him what kind of luck tiwari is carrying with himself for me he better choice for number six than yuvraj

Posted by Biswajitbangalore on (November 5, 2012, 8:20 GMT)

What this murli Vijay is doing!!! again chennai fever!!!. He never looks like confident in any format except CSK matches. That also happened past. Not sure when Rahane, Tiwar, Dinda will get chance. Just spoiling cricket ahead of Politics. this leads to de-motivational towards cricket fans.

Posted by mayank125 on (November 5, 2012, 8:19 GMT)

why murli vijay and harbhajan

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 8:19 GMT)

I dont know what the hell Ishant Sharma and M Vijay is doing in the team.....Lot of youngsters have performed and performing well in the Ranji.....I dont know what the selection committee see in Vijay and Ishant to let into the team......

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 8:19 GMT)

Why did they select both Vijay and Rahane? India should go with 5 batsmen + Keeper + 5 bowler attack. MS Dhoni, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj/Cheteshwar Pujara, R Ashwin, Umesh Yadav, Harbhajan/Ojha, Ishant Sharma and Zaheer Khan. Ashwin is a good batsmen too and if Dhoni can also bat, it's going to be a team with 7 good batsmen.

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 8:18 GMT)

Harbhajan's inclusion and retaining Zaheer Khan who is also in the injury list, Now also the selectors are sleeping.

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 8:18 GMT)

best team possible only with exception of irfan pathan..

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 8:18 GMT)

I am slightly disappointed by the selectors. Inclusion on Vijay & Harbhajjan baffles me. Selectors should have picked only 13 players. Which would give others chance of playing Ranji and fine tunning their games. Bhajji is not gonna get a game for sure than why pick him. I would also have liked to see Manoj Tiwary being selected. He would have given the team additional leg spinning role as well..

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 8:18 GMT)

Posted by anshu.s on (November 5, 2012, 8:18 GMT)

Why no Lionel Messi, why no Ronaldo, why no Salman Khan !! Billiant batting by Vijay for India A gets him a spot, great bowling by Bhajji against Hyderabad get him in the team !! why only stop at selecting 15 players why not 20 , new selection comitee your wisdom and rationale is just too much !!

Posted by kingcobra85 on (November 5, 2012, 8:17 GMT)

If Vijay is probably replacing Sehwag. Then it is a good decision. A right hand opener replacing a right hand batsmen. If India is looking for a future opener then it should be A.Mukund

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 8:16 GMT)

MS Dhoni (capt & wk), Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, R Ashwin, Umesh Yadav, Pragyan Ojha, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan

Not Impressed

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 8:16 GMT)

Why does India need an extra opener when they have Ajinkya Rahane? Why not a medium pace all rounder? Yeah, I am talking about Irfan Pathan!

Posted by TonOfTons on (November 5, 2012, 8:15 GMT)

I do not understand the point in picking harbhajan singh if he is not going to be in the playing XI. Ashwin/Ojha should be the two spinners selected based on their recent performances. Most lilely India will go with 6 Batsmen (Sehwag/Gambhir/Kohli/Sachin/Pujara/Yuvraj) and so there is place for only 4 bowlers (Zaheer or Ishant, Yadav, Ashwin, Ojha). So picking harbhajan does not make any sense and it also has the potential to create mistrust in the dressing room (Is dhoni pushing for harbhajan etc?) Also give the guy tiwary a chance? He deserves one.

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 8:15 GMT)

The selectors should have gone for 50 member squad to keep every fan happy.

Posted by colossalcricketer on (November 5, 2012, 8:15 GMT)

its a fine team except that they should have selected Tiwary in place of Vijay and they should have dropped Gambhir... Well I hope Gambhir regains his form cos that will be more than good for India...I guess Zaheer and Yadav/Ishant could chip in some wickets with the spinners doing the rest.

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 8:15 GMT)

XI Line up Should be

M Vijay, Gautam Gambhir,Cheteshwar Pujara, Sachin Tendulkar,Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh, MS Dhoni (capt & wk), R Ashwin, Umesh Yadav, Pragyan Ojha, Zaheer Khan

Posted by dork29 on (November 5, 2012, 8:13 GMT)

Ishant Sharma? why not Abid Ali?

Posted by adichd on (November 5, 2012, 8:13 GMT)

What great thing has vijay done. And thae guy who scored 93 in practice match is not there.Four openers????????Why??

Posted by binender123 on (November 5, 2012, 8:12 GMT)

Pretty good selection...the only thing is about M.Vijay, he has given lot of chances he get's off with loose deliveries....i dont think he deserve the place. M.Tiwary would've given chance he is a promising cricketer he has techniques and utilise the .oppertunity well... .

Posted by AjayyS on (November 5, 2012, 8:12 GMT)

Surely only 11 of these will b playing both matches. picking up 15 is a poor choice. should been a 12 member squad. Ishant, Vijay unnecessary pickings!

Posted by ashup on (November 5, 2012, 8:11 GMT)

Was shrikanth providing outside support - baffling selections of Murali Vijay and Harbajan.

Posted by bluebloodripper on (November 5, 2012, 8:09 GMT)

Crappy and safe selection. No clue what Harbhajan and Ishant have done to deserve a place in the squad. Vijay has been selected to carry the water and bats for the team. Good to see yuvraj back in the team, he's looking fit, scoring runs and taking wickets. I hope the team decides to play Rahane, Pujara as they need a little bit of a run to show what they are capable of. Overall its a safe selection with all the usual suspects in the squads. It seems selection happens depending on ur past record and how popular you are and not current form.

After along gap yuvi is back in the test team i am eagerly waiting for return to the tests

Posted by AnoMaLy on (November 5, 2012, 8:08 GMT)

I would have picked A Mukund in place of M Vijay. M Vijay does not deserve to be in this squad and wonder if Dhoni has pulled a favour here. Rest of the team is as expected. Should be an interesting contest cant wait!

Posted by sampad86 on (November 5, 2012, 8:08 GMT)

What is the reason Vijay and Ishant get selected? Both has not been in good form. where as Dinda, who is performing consistently well, is not in the squad. its a shocking selection.

Posted by Anshul1007 on (November 5, 2012, 8:08 GMT)

Why two opener and one 6th no. batsmen. They should have took another specialist middle other batsmen. Zaheer.. for what.. if Zaheer in playing 11, then India will play with 3 and 1/2 bowler. I guess now even child can pick playing eleven.

Poor team selection.

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 8:07 GMT)

Do we really need 2 back up openers, with one who has constantly failed ??? Bhaji ??? Really ???? Yes hes a fighter but cant bowl at the moment, has forgotten all about flight. Kartik and Powar are better bowlers. Feel for Badri and Tiwary. Badri career finished before it ever started and now selectors constantly go back to those who have failed and will never succeed abroad as they cant play the short ball or the moving ball. Flat track bullies !!! Very poor team. Would be nice if they took a punt with viru at 6 and rahane opening

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 8:07 GMT)

A great pity to see Manoj Tiwary out and a failed player like Murali Vijay in. Harbhajan gets selected for non-performance.

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 8:06 GMT)

zaheer khan is not fit so m............ may be 3 speener attack is in the mind of dhoni.............

Posted by ravikb on (November 5, 2012, 8:06 GMT)

What has Harbhajan done to come back to test squad? For going wicketless in 21 overs in Ranji? I was expecting some improvements in the new selection panel. It seems they are following their ex-team. Also, what's the hurry in bringing Yuvraj back so soon? Selection should be based on performance, fitness, etc but not emotionally. No wonder Indian team are always in decline. I foresee an English win this series. Go England go. Beat India in India. Hopefully, then we will see some strong selection.

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 8:06 GMT)

Welcome back Bhajji & Yuvraj, Gautam Gambhir, Zaheer & Ishant Sharma is a waste

Posted by Silver_Angels on (November 5, 2012, 8:06 GMT)

My XI: 1. Sehwag, 2. Gambhir, 3. Pujara, 4. Sachin, 5. Kholi, 6. Yuvraj, 7. Dhoni, 8. Ashwin, 9. Zaheer, 10. Yadav, 11. Ojha ---------- Vijay - stand by opener, both openers fit , Ishant - seeded below Yadav, Harbhajan - Ashwin get prefered, Rahane - unlucky, YV can also bowl lefty to KP.

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 8:06 GMT)

I don't know why and how was harbhajan selected. He has had no good game except for the 4overs against England in WCt20.Also in Indian pitches if UV is treated as a batsman who can bowl spin, why do we need bhajji. He doesn't deserve it.Ishant hasnt had a good season by any standards.Murali Vijay, well he is again a unwanted selection when we have viru and gauti as openers with rahane prodiving cover.Should have showed some faith in poor tiwary for he is young and is consistent. He will become a badrinath soon,a talented youngster who shall never play for India.

Posted by csr11 on (November 5, 2012, 8:05 GMT)

Grrrrr.. why is murali vijay in the side once again.. werent Mukund or Dhawan better options??

Posted by varkay on (November 5, 2012, 8:05 GMT)

One more observation is that A. Mukund is overlooked and M Vijay has been considered? Mukund is consistent and performing well in the recent matches. Moreover, why Ajinka Rahane if we are to select one more opening batsman. He could well utilise his talent in Ranji matches rathern than being in the squad and not playing any matches. If we are to consider Yuvaraj as an All rounder, is he fit enough to bowl atleast 20/25 overs in a day and field the entire day? I would not say this is the best selection unless the team comes back with a clarity on selecting M Vijay, Harbajan as we have already an Off spinner and Opening Batsment in the squad. It would have been nice to select a Leg Spinner to balance the squad.

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 8:04 GMT)

How the hell Harbhajan got selected?

Posted by Bilal_26891 on (November 5, 2012, 8:03 GMT)

Vijay's inclusion is a bit surprise but its good have specialist reserve opener in the squad.Though Rahane is a top order batsman, he is not a specialist opener but good to have an extra batsman other than top 6 and a wk in the squad.Rest was expected and looks fine.Cant get a more balanced team than this.Ind now just need openers to give a healthy start at the top...

Posted by the_blue_android on (November 5, 2012, 8:03 GMT)

I really hope Gauti and Sehwag get injured and Rahane gets a chance. Sehwag probably last made a match winning contribution 4 years ago and Gauti has not learned how to leave deliveries outside off stump and insists on giving catching practice.

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 8:02 GMT)

4 openers in Squad inclued rahane..Better Remove One And Replace Raina

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 8:02 GMT)

4 openers really ? Why was raina dropped?

Posted by sandy_bangalore on (November 5, 2012, 8:02 GMT)

Harbhajan, IShant, Zaheer..the same old faces back shows the dearth of talent in this so called "Cricket mad" or "One Sport" nation. Expect each of them to have one good performance in the series, thus booking their tickets for the next series.

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 8:01 GMT)

Selectors show neither vision not guts. :(

Posted by Edassery on (November 5, 2012, 8:01 GMT)

Ishant Sharma? Harbhajan Singh?? M Vijay???

I would have taken Mukund instead of Vijay - Vijay is a typical T20 player. Welcome the news of dropping Raina finally. Also, for home events there was no need to include Harbhajan Singh in the first list. We could have called him anyhow in case of injuries to others, although Bajji hasn't done enough to prove that he's still good

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 8:00 GMT)

Uv the real fighter <3 eagerly waiting to c him in whites :)

Posted by varkay on (November 5, 2012, 8:00 GMT)

Quite Interesting. Ajinkya Rahana is there still they have gone and selected Murali Vijay. Does this gives a messae that Sewhag has to bat down the order and M. Vijay to open with Gambhir? Moreover, no additional middle order batsmen means, Yuvaraj may sit in the dressing room and get himself familiar with test match situations? Could not relate to Harbajan Inclusion. He might play only when Yuvaraj plays as we may need to have left arm spin option if we are to go ahead with 2 off spinners. Hence, if Yuvaraj plays, Ojha may not get a chance and Harbajan might get one. Otherwise, Ojha and Ashwin will play and opening order woudl be changed and Sehwag might play in number 5 after Sachin. This is not bad option as Sewhag wicket is crucial and we should not lose out in the opening spell or with a one good ball. Anyway Good Luck.

Bhajji and M Vijay selection defies logic!!! Gambhir and Ishant should have been dropped !!

Posted by Love_Tanmay on (November 5, 2012, 7:59 GMT)

whats point behind droping raina??? what vijay doing in team?? i think they r try to replace csk's (badri) player with another csk's(vijay) player. And what abt anothers csk's(Raina).after all csk own by srinivasan so selector's dont wont to unhappy BCCI & CSK.amarnath failed to do this.thats y today he is not part of selextion panel.

What did Harbhajan do to be in the team? Someone please advise. He did not even take a single wicked in Hyderabad first innings

Posted by vensim on (November 5, 2012, 7:59 GMT)

This is ridiculous. Brining back Bajji on what basis? Zaheer?!!! you must be kidding. Can he bowl 16-18 overs? well may be they assumed spinner would do most of the bowling. Then why not rest him and give a go to new bowlers.

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 7:58 GMT)

where is Irfan and Parthiv ? What Bhajji and ZAK doing here? First Impression is bad Impression for New selectors

I can;t understand the stupiduty of selectors in showing faith over Muruli Vijay, when he failed against the one of practice match thanks to Touring England Vs India A..... Some uncertainty over Manoj Tiwary's selection looms now....

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 7:58 GMT)

It is a very good squad. We needed Yuvraj Singh as a batsman at number 6 and also as a bowling option. Harbhajan Singh should get a chance ahead on Ojha.

Posted by MerajusSalekin on (November 5, 2012, 7:57 GMT)

Its good to see Yuvraj back in all formats. But he needs to be consistent to cement his place in the team. Harbhajan has also shown some rythm recently, but the pace attack is looking weak and unfit.

Posted by the_blue_android on (November 5, 2012, 7:55 GMT)

I think M.Vijay is from a a very influential family. I wish Rahane opens for India soon. Sehwag's reflexes have deserted him 4 years ago and Gauti can't resist poking to third man and get out.

I dont know what is the role for murali vijay in the test Squad since sehwag and gambhir is already there. they should have dropped either of them before nclude vijay into the squad,, And i am happy to see raina out of the squad. Strange selection ....Vijay was a surprise .. mukund is technically more sound i believe.. What was the "Strong start' that Vijay had during the season ?........And also generally Hosts select a 12-man squad ( look at the aussies team selection ) ...this is a 15- man squad ....

Looks like a great squad but i seriously don't understand the concept of selecting 15 individuals even when it's a HOME SERIES. Select a squad of 12, if needed, an emergency replacement is right there in a nearby state!!!! BCCI needs to stop wasting precious individual practice time of the players...

Posted by ssenthil on (November 5, 2012, 7:45 GMT)

This is not at all good start by new selection panel. Dumbo Selection. What is the motivation to bring H Singh back who went wicket-less against a weak HYD team (except Lax) also??? Raina dropped means it's to make sure Yuvi plays not to give a headache to Dhoni selecting 1 b/w them? Not a great start by the new selection panel IMO perhaps they want to be defensive? It would be pity if P Ojha dropped for H Singh.

Posted by   on (November 5, 2012, 7:43 GMT)

As was expected, Yuvraj Singh has been named in the squad for the first two Tests against England, starting November 15. Harbhajan Singh was also recalled while Suresh Raina, the middle-order batsman, was dropped. M Vijay, the opening batsman, was included after a strong start to the domestic season.
