Sehwag keen to build on Ranji ton

ESPNcricinfo staff

Virender Sehwag, who scored a fighting century for Delhi in the Ranji Trophy match against Uttar Pradesh on Monday, refused to be drawn into the debate about his form. His innings of 107 - his first century in any form of cricket in 11 months and his first in Ranji Trophy in six years - couldn't prevent Delhi's defeat, but it allayed the doubts over his indifferent form. Sehwag said he was happy to have scored the century and hoped to bat well in the upcoming Test series against England.

"I am happy that I scored 100 against UP. Whether I am back in form or not, is not for me to decide but I thought I played well enough and hope to do well (against England)," he told PTI.

Sehwag, who scored 25 in the first innings, suffered a cut on his ring finger when a chance off Mohammad Kaif flew past him at first slip on the second day. He didn't take the field for the first two sessions on the third day and only came out to bat at No. 6 as Delhi's bid to save the match started faltering. He batted for almost four hours and faced 165 balls during his innings.

"My injury forced me to bat in the middle order," he said. "The doctor did not give me local anaesthesia on time. The team management decides [the move to] the middle order and not the player himself.

"My finger is getting better. It's fine at the moment."

There have been concerns over the form of Sehwag and his opening partner, Gautam Gambhir. But Sehwag, like Gambhir, believes they are still the best openers in India, and refused to comment on the selectors' decision to pick two more openers in the squad for England, Ajinkya Rahane and M Vijay.

"Yes, we are [the best opening pair in the country]. The decision [to include two more openers] is taken by the national selectors. They know it well."

Sehwag is also close to a personal milestone. He is just two matches short of becoming only the ninth Indian player to play 100 Tests. "It was my dream to play for my country. Since the time I achieved that, my next dream has been to perform well and play 100 Tests for India. I am very happy that moment is coming soon," he said.

Get out of the team mr.viru for the time-being ... u r not gonna be in the frame for future goals!!!U are not a gud fielder (except catching). U were certainly one of the most destructive batsmen in the game but still age is catching u up...U r attitude is really worrying.U and Gauti shud take a break and analyse wat is wrong and then perform well and then try to get into team!!! Pls don see personal pride at the expense of the team!!!! I still hav respect for u but pls take a brk and come back if possi

Guys. Shewag can still bat and score runs for India. but why should he put effort when he and bunch of others are automatic selection to India team? Tell him that you are dropped due to performance and go back to domestic and prove. You will see the different Shewag. Except Dravid, Sachin, VVS, Kohli everyone thinks they have achieved everything in cricket now they are automatic selection irrespective of their performance. They do not have fear about getting dropped. Fear gives better performance.

@barwala_vasi Sehwag's 300s do come in quick time, but you can't say they effect results more than others. Only one of his two 300s have ended in a victory for india, and that too due to a match bag of 8 and 6 a piece for Kumble and Irfan, respectively. About the 293 at Mumbai, it was a dead flat pitch which didn't even complete 3 innings. Sehwag has only got the better of Murali once or twice but never dominated him like Lara did.

@jontykumma: The difference between his 300s and the others is that more often than not you get a better chance of a result. In multan India beat Pakistan for the very first time. You cited a series in which Lara was successfull in Srilanka and how he dominated Murli. I say go and check his 201in galle and 293 in Mumbai and u will get the answer.

@JontyKumma sehwag get out to nobody. He is no lara. Lara and sachin put a prize on their wicket. Sehwag is more of beautiful slogger not ugly one like afridi and dhoni. why i say sehwag is a slogger because he rarely use brain when team needs him build inning in second inning , he threw his wicket away many many times. That said he is comfortable and do well in some settings. Great player like lara can do well when there is a challenge. Only Dravid and VVS saved india from loss many many times. They soak up pressure well . That said sehwag scored 150 in fast pacy perth when wickets were tumbling other side. So it is not he can't do it , it is purely mental. Sehwag needs lots of cajoling his ego. It needs lots of work ,return is less nowadays.

Sehwag can do anything if he puts mind to it. Question is he is all talk no show? Saying he plays the way he played won't cut it for me. He need to correct for his old age and eye sight and too much fat. So basically he needs to get busy , he needs to have new set of goals. There is no single person most talented than sehwag in Indian team. So question is only the motivation.

  • Tahir on November 7, 2012, 21:16 GMT

Sehwag is perhaps too excited. Recently, few senior batsmen have taken advantage of weaker bowling lineups in Ranji but it may be totally different against English pace and spin attack. Please don't read too much into Ranji scores as broad/bresnan are coming as well as swann, panesar and patel.

@Shivanadhuni Harinath : "those who criticize sehwag as flat trak bully. just check statastics". Here are your answers. 1. That was also on a flat track in a small ground in India. 2. The only INDIAN player to get 2 300s. Both on the flattest tracks in the sub-continent, Multan and Chennai. Only averages 22.73 in SA,AUS,NZL,ENG since 2008. 3. Brian Lara got 688 runs in 6 innings in a series in Sri Lanka in 2001. Murali only got him out once. When has Sehwag dominated Murali like that?
