India have retained 15 players from the squad that lost to England in Mumbai for the third Test at Eden Gardens, beginning in Kolkata on December 5. Fast bowler Umesh Yadav, who did not play the second Test because of a back injury, was not fit and hence left out.

The BCCI had on Monday said the selectors would pick the squad for the two remaining Tests and the two Twenty20 internationals that follow, but today's release said the selection for the fourth Test, in Nagpur, and the Twenty20 games will be made later.

Yadav, the most effective of India's pace bowlers in the series-opener in Ahmedabad, was advised "at least 10 days' rest" by a specialist in Mumbai, and was not expected to recover in time despite the lengthy break ahead of the Test. "The injury is more serious than it was thought to be, so the team will have to make do without him for at least another Test," a source told ESPNcricinfo.

The India squad will assemble in Kolkata on December 2, after a few days' break, while England will remain in Mumbai before leaving for Kolkata on November 30.

Squad: MS Dhoni (capt), Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Cheteshwar Pujara, R Ashwin, Ashok Dinda, Pragyan Ojha, Ajinkya Rahane, Harbhajan Singh, Ishant Sharma, M Vijay, Zaheer Khan.

India will lose again to England.

The reasons for Dhoni's failure is his arrogance and backing up of fringe players like chawla,rp,vinay kumar, murali vijay, even raina who seriously lacks the skills for the test cricket. You cannot make everyone like joginder sharma.

A bowler like Irfan Pathan is required in the squad....

i thought that M vijay have offered mor chence then others.why manoj tiwary ,rahane not get enough chances.

I have been wondering why Dhoni did not bring on Yuvraj for such a long time when KP was batting. Any idea anyone? Was Yuvraj injured? If not, what explains not bringing on a bowler who has practically made his bunny the batsman at the crease?

Posted by Naresh28 on (November 29, 2012, 0:04 GMT)

Is Dhoni bored with the 5 DAY Test games? If he wanted it to turn from Day1 then maybe he is? Victory in a shorter time. If he is bored he should make way for a NEW TEST CAPTAIN. The last game was a disaster in planning. India needs to find another Anil Kumble type of fast leg spinner.

Posted by Naresh28 on (November 28, 2012, 23:55 GMT)

@nampally - I enjoy reading your comments and suggestions. I really wish you could be a se;ector instead of some of the lot we get/got. India should have made changes to the squad for next two games and did not. Your suggestion of variety from Rahul Sharma and once you mentioned Murali Karthik are the best two. Including Tiwari could have given Dhone the option of using Tiwari as a legspin option. Dhoni is just TOO STUBBORN. Little use was made of Yuvi and Shewag in last game Some bowlers were being overbowled.

Posted by Raj12345 on (November 28, 2012, 22:01 GMT)

I don't know why D Karthink is over looked. He is perfect middle order batsman better than Yuvi, Raina & Sharma. Dhoni has to support someone who can succeed him as a WK & Batsman. Poor DK since he got blessings publicly from Aussie coach that DK can lead team. After that statement selectors forced DK to live in dark.

Posted by Suryawanshi_ on (November 28, 2012, 21:57 GMT)

This is more of an inability to act than showing confidence. If Mumbai wasnt a big enough shock to make changes then be ready for more of it. Same squad would likely mean similar results assuming pitch conditions remain same.

It is sad that so many players do not justify their position in the 11. Something has to change, selectors cant be meek anymore.

Posted by akashchandran on (November 28, 2012, 18:42 GMT)

The selectors made a good decision despite the media pressure. The middle of a tight series is not the time to make drastic changes. Moreover the players who the selectors would have been concerned about/given another chance at the start of the series such as Gambhir, Sehwag and Yuvraj have at least one goods score to show out of 3 innings. No top class spinner seems to be knocking at the door that Harbhajhan or Ashwin can be replaced after poor performance in just one innings. As far as Sachin is considered it is hoped that he scores some runs in the next two Tests, otherwise the selectors might be forced to speak him into retirement. Ideally he should be back in form and be there in South Africa since the other three middle order players will be inexperienced in overseas conditions.

Yuvraj should be their..if he scores above 30 he can continue till 80 or 90..so yuvraj should be their in the side..as well as sehwag and gambhir also..pujara is in gud form and he also..msd,sachin,ashwin and zaheer should be their..ojha stills with 5 wickets in every match..now ishanth sharma should get a chance..and murali vijay to come for virat kohli...:)..that will be a good team Gambhir Sehwag Vijay Pujara Sachin Yuvraj Dhoni Ashwin Zaheer Ojha Ishanth sharma..

Posted by CricOr on (November 28, 2012, 14:24 GMT)

Dhoni had quoted after the first test match win against England in Ahmedabad this series "I don't even want to see this wicket," he said. "There wasn't enough turn and bounce for the spinners… Hopefully in the coming matches we'll see the wicket turn, right from start, or as soon as possible so that the toss doesn't become vital." It did not work in Mumbai hopefully it will work in Eden Gardens Kolkata for this Indian team. All the best!!

@ facebook (November 28 2012, 12:02 PM GMT) if Tendulkar's out of form then he should be dropped for someone who is form and can score runs. Then he can be considered for selection when he's back in form.

Posted by   on (November 28, 2012, 12:02 GMT)

If someone is to be blamed for all defeats its dhoni alone and not anyone else. He doesnt seem to understand what is Test Cricket all about. This is real form of cricket where you need skills . For those who talk about sachin please understand there is a great difference between form and class. Sachin is class player still and is just out of form.

Posted by DaisonGarvasis on (November 28, 2012, 9:43 GMT)

@Pradx - I dont know of any Hundred scored by Sachin in tests since at least the 2011 world cup. Buddy that is a loooooooooooong time. And if you are talking about any ONE side game he played and scored you really need help. Here we are talking about a guy who enjoys the place in National team by default. Remember he wanted the 100th International 100 be scored in tests but failed and then choose to score it against Bangladesh in an ODI. The signs were there for everybody to see. If you choose to be blind , good for you

Reports suggesting Sachin Tendulkar wants to end his career..the little master.....

Posted by   on (November 28, 2012, 6:59 GMT)

Its about time BCCI step-in and tell players like Zahir khan,Gautam Gambir,Tendulker, Yuvraj and virender sehwag that playing for India is not a job or a position which you have to hold till you retire,It is a privilage to hold the Indian flag in the battlefield of Cricket .This privilage is granted subject to their form in the playing field rather then the history of their past performence or the number of runs they might have scored in the past. You can not and will not be given a place of the team if you fail to deliver. Therefore take retirement with respect rather then getting kicked out of the team by not been able to deliver when the team needs them to take a stand,Harsh it might sound but thats the truth they will and should face and let the Young and fresh talent like Unmukt chand.Ajaikai Rahane,Murli vijay,Rohit sharma,Mohit Sharma,Shikhar Dhawan,P.A Reddy,gH Vihari,Manprit Juneja,Raina and others must be given chance to show their talents.

Apart from the debate about the players, there is an urgent need to look at the Indian coach. Fletcher inherited a team that was No.1 in tests and were the World Cup winners. His tenure has seen the team go steadily downhill. Apart from the player's performances, the coach is expected to improve tactical skills. However, the team is first getting beaten on tactical issues - like not asking Yuvraj to bowl at peterson during his long innings, wrong field placements etc. With young bowlers, the coach's role becomes more important. Fletcher was a spent force and should be allowed to spend his retirement years with his grand children. A younger coach who played in this century is required if the team is to progress.

Posted by sensible-indian-fan on (November 28, 2012, 6:31 GMT)

Guys, do you realize what our playing 11 would be if all selections are made based on 100% merit. Here's how it would be - Dhawan (Mukund/Vijay) Rahane Pujara Kohli Tiwari (Saha/Dinesh Karthick) Ashwin Zaheer (Ishant/Umesh) Ojha. In this case, we don't know who would be the captain. As Cpt Meanster said, we all think way too emotionally. Sachin is a liability (more so when he scores a century because he will play another series based on that). Gambhir, Sehwag perfrom just when they are about to be dropped. Sehwag in particular JUST CAN'T play balls that have even a hint of swing. Gambhir just CAN'T control his urges to play outside off stump. On current form, Ashwin is the 3rd best test batsmen in India (after Pujara and Kohli). Though its heartening to see that, his main job is to bowl well which he didn't exactly do. Seeing the way we select teams, sometimes I wonder if its better that India loses all its remaining matches. But then again, nothing really happened after 0-8, did it?

This selection panel proved that earlier selection committee was good. At least they have the guts to throw out the non performers like Ravindra Jadeja, Murali Vijay, A.Mukund, Harbhajan Singh, Sreesanth, Ishant, A.Mishra, Vinay Kumar, Dinesh Karthi, Robin Uthappa, Yusuf Pathan and Yuvraj Singh, yes, Yuvraj Singh, from the team

Posted by Natx on (November 28, 2012, 5:45 GMT)

I guess selfishkar is set to play until he turns 50! Another record that no one can beat. Crowds - don't stand up and clap in any faint hope that he's done yet. He has no idea of retiring and continue to "enjoy" his single digit game. If you're a bowler try to get in queue in kolkata, you have a good chance to get him bowled or lbw! Even the tiniest respect I had for that man is gone and the selectors (now headed by a Mumbaikar) have no guts to drop him.

Posted by   on (November 28, 2012, 4:53 GMT)

India should import Tim Southee and Trent Boult from New Zealand the way the two are bowling right now. They need all the bowling help they can get.

@Arpan Banerjee -- Your criticism of Dhoni and drumming up of Gambhir shows your limited understanding of cricket. Imran Khan recently described Dhoni as the "best thing to have happened to Indian cricket". You need to take a look at his awesome winning record before making such statements. And Gambhir is rated highly only by us Indians. Outside India nobody cares about him. He will probably be dropped sometime soon. Never seen any neutral commentators saying good things about him (unless of course they are commentating from India). Shane warne recently asked Gambhir to start playing for the team instead of just himself. Saha and Dinda should not be playing international cricket. Sorry. I agree with your other suggestions completely though.

Poor decisions on and off the field are hurting the team. Sachin will take a few teammates down with him. If Virat plays at #4 he can hit a century next game but Sachin's wicket is putting pressure on him. What a shame Sachin's not letting Virat bat ahead of him! No one in right frame of mind would bet for Sachin's return to form. A century or two will neither fill the void of the past nor serve the future of Indian cricket. Dhoni has lost his mind selecting Yuvraj in XI and not making him bowl 15 out of 100 overs. The whole purpose of playing him in the team is lost. It is a known fact KP's vulnerable to left arm spin and Yuvraj has got him a few times. But he enjoyed full support of Dhoni scoring 186. Dhoni bats like a novice compared to Matt Prior - pace or spin, England or India. Ashwin was selected as front-line spinner. He came a cropper in first test itself. The team is playing around a batsman, Pujara, and a toiling bowler, Ojha. Congrats everyone on re-selection!!

Posted by JustIPL on (November 28, 2012, 2:52 GMT)

Simply there are no replacements so they have to play the same eleven unlike England who have multiple combinations to get better of India.

Posted by jango_moh on (November 28, 2012, 2:43 GMT)

unless dhoni goes, none of the changes mentioned here will happen... we need a strong captain who asks for the right players.. nywys, hope ishanth plays the next game instead of either ashwin or bhajji, i actually feel that bhajji might just get back his mojo, ashwin is still kinda unproven against good teams... atleast now i hope they start considering a spinner like ojha esp outside the SC.... its such a no brainer, but they keep making stupid mistakes!!!

Doesn't Tendulkar realize that he is losing matches for India by playing in them???? Am I the only one in hoping that the great master should retire and not play any more matches for India?

Posted by Reggaecricket on (November 28, 2012, 1:50 GMT)

Harbajan Singh seems more of a spent force these days. He did nothing to justify his selection and has not done anything to justify being retained for the 3rd Test either. India is famous to make emotional selections of course!

Posted by challagalla on (November 28, 2012, 0:20 GMT)

@capt.meanster. Nice post. We certainly are emotional idiots [ lets hope we don't get arrested for that ] and we also tend to place too much importance to the past. I heard this guy Rajiv Shukla responding onTV [ regarding SRT's retirement ] and pointing out to SRT's records. Thats one way to look at it. You never know, Sachin may play a knock that could turn the match around or he could very well fail. The other way to look at it is to bet on a player hungry for success hoping he will come good. Thats preparing for the future now . I would rather give Tiwari, Rahane or Rohit Sharma a chance to play in India on our pitches than blood them in Perth or any one of the seaming pitches. Its a fair call either way with no guarantee of a win.

Regardless of what players step on the field for india the end result will stay the same i.e. India got hammered by England, Again. Ciao.....

Posted by Shan156 on (November 27, 2012, 23:16 GMT)

Not surprising. I believe India will continue to play the same XI. Harbhajan may have faded in recent times but he has a terrific record in Kolkata and I think India is banking on that. India has a terrific record in Kolkata as well. So, I guess they will be buoyant and will start as favorites. If there is one thing England cannot afford, it is complacency and I hope they work hard and fight hard. The 4-0 monkey is off India's back so they will play with less pressure too. While most people predicted that England will not even draw a single test leave alone win one, they have managed that in Mumbai. So, there will be some confidence and momentum on their side too. Hopefully, it will be a great contest and, as always, may the better team win.

Posted by indianpunter on (November 27, 2012, 23:04 GMT)

@Capt.Meanster. Spot on ! Couldnt have put it better myself. We are stuck in the dark ages, refusing to move forwards. whether its with making the hard calls on selection or our bone headedness about DRS. BCCI has become a hegemonious bully, with no accountability; top to bottom.

Posted by TKmachine on (November 27, 2012, 22:30 GMT)

@Rumy1...Are you sure you are not out of your mind..when you selected your ideal team?...You didn't include Kholi and Ashwin. They are the two young Indian cricketers achieved a lot in period of time. And you are putting Harbhajan ahead Ashwin, you must be out of your mind. Harbhajan couldn't even take a single Ranji trophy wicket. He spent 3 months in England to play county games and he couldn't take a single wicket. He is basically getting older and running out of varieties in bowling. Harbhajan was a good bowler but not right now. Ashwin has taken fastest 50 wickets (doesn't matter against which team). Why Ohja couldn't pickup lot of wickets against NZ, WI etc...For me..if they pickup Harbhajan in the team, india is gonna lose the game again. Same with Kholi...he has great Technics but he has to be patience

Posted by Nampally on (November 27, 2012, 22:00 GMT)

@Jitesh61: India definitely need 2 Pace bowlers for Kolkatta. Secondly, India had FOUR spinners for Mumbai out of which Dhoni calmly rested Yuvraj - the same guy who took 5 for --vs. England in the first match. Sehwag is a good off spinner but Dhoni never bowls him.So how do you deal with Dhoni's logic or lack of it? Your suggestion of 4 spinners which includes 2 off spinners failed in Mumbai. Why will it succeed in Kolkatta? If another spinner is needed it has to be Rahul Sharma with wristy leg breaks at around 100 KPH + lot of bounce. After seeing panesar's success I was shocked this one definite change missing from the Selection committee! This is just common sense. Both Ashwin & Harbhajan bowled very poorly- no length, direction or consistency- on a fine spinners pitch at Mumbai!.Kumble would have run thru this side like a hot kniofe thru' butter!. Lack of intensity is dominant in this team because half the team is "older & past it". Include Tiwary & Rahul to make India winners!

Posted by jb633 on (November 27, 2012, 21:49 GMT)

@Jitesh61- hmm I am an English fan but think that would be a huge mistake. I mean good bowlers are good bowlers whatever they bowl. And if you watched the 2nd test in colombo and here you can see that batsmen can adjust to spin bowling. In the tour of the UAE Ajmal was often coming on after Gul had already dismissed the top order. India need to prepare a pitch that may do a touch for the seamers on day one because if they lose the toss then they could be in trouble. I mean yes against Pakistan we faultered but they have spinners way beyond the level of any Indian bowlers. India should look to play 2 spinners Khan and a young quickie (not medium pace). I saw a guy in the IPL who looked good for the DD and with Yadav out I would give him a go. Picking 4 spinners will not work as spinners like to bowl long spells anyway and chopping and changing every few overs will disrupt their rhytm. India had it spot on in game one I felt but there was a lack of variety in game 2. Pick 2 seamers

Posted by SanjivAwesome on (November 27, 2012, 21:42 GMT)

Ah, our selectors are being consistent. Their salaries area not tied to Team performance.

Posted by 2.14istherunrate on (November 27, 2012, 20:52 GMT)

Looking at this dispassionately India need a new 'keeper. Dhoni can captain and he can bat but he's less than the best behind the timbers.cp to Prior. Calling for Tendulkar to retire may be obvious but look at the record and you understand why not. Anyway 39 is not old if you stay fit, and he is far more committed fielder than most of the team. I suspect he calls the shots still amd who can fill his shoes anyway, though Pujara has been a huge success at 3 replacing Dravid. @jitesh61- England are not so bad at spin in case you had not noticed. I think you are going to find them even better against your attack in Kolkatha and Nagpur- whether it's by roasting, toasting, boiling or baking your team is going to Cooked properly!!

Posted by wake_up_india on (November 27, 2012, 20:30 GMT)

The problem with the Indian team is its selection process, i.e. the BCCI. Only in India would you do the same thing twice and expect a different outcome. And through all this, SRT reamins a permanent fixture, like a tenured professor who has stopped publishing but cannot be fired. Compare this to the way in which Ganguly was hounded out of the team when his 1-year average was much higher than SRT's today -- it was still time for Ganguly to go, but that is another matter. There is too much reverence for seniority in India, which may be a cultural problem. Selection should be based on recent performance, not a 10-year average. Moreveor, Dhoni made a post-match comment that his bowlers were bowling the wrong length -- did he point that out to them or did he think it would hurt their feelings. A captain has to do something more than tossing a coin. So, this Indian team cannot play fast bowling that seams, spin bowling that spins too much and has brilliant but inconsistent batsmen

Posted by jitesh61 on (November 27, 2012, 19:59 GMT)

There is no need of fast bowler when you play against an opponenet which at times cannot play spin well & tht too on spiner friendly pitches. Go with 4 spinners of differnet styles. Captains wants to use spinner more & uses fast bowlers to give some rest period to spinner on the field. no need for fast bowlers .... This combnation shuld work. Ashwin + Ojha + Rahul Sharma/Piyush Chawala/Harbhajan.

Doing the same thing again and again and, yet, expecting different results is the sign of an insane person (or in this case, an insane selection team)!

I think the YOUNG Indians in India and overseas are demanding a NEW India; one which is proactive and emotionless compared to the TRADITIONAL India which is emotional, sentimental and at times delusional. The same applies to the cricketing culture of India. We simply are EMOTIONAL idiots !!! We act on the lines of 'respect', 'homage' and 'tributes' rather than acting practically in the favour of the best interests of the team. It's pathetic to look at the same squad that lost in Mumbai. They will NEVER learn. They didn't learn after an 8-0 drubbing.. so it would be ridiculous to expect any different now. Tendulkar will never retire in my lifetime. God bless him !

My team of fifteen for Kolkata Edens would have been:

Jaffer, Rahane, Sehwag, Pujara, Badrinath, Kaif, Dhoni, Harbhajan, Ishant, Dinda, Ojha, Akshath Reddy (Hyd), Umesh, Sachin and Piyush Chawla.

Abhishek Nayar of Mumbai, U.Kaul of Punjab as wicket keeper, Shami Ahmed of Bengal and S.Nadeem of Jharkhand can be kept as back up.

No surpise since there was not much options..shame that umesh yadav is out of eden test..he wud hv been useful in eden where ball does a bit specially after tea..we shd play 2 spinners+2 seamers-Zaheer & dinda & Ojha & Bhajji..not Ashwin..Bhajji was below par at Mumbai but should be tried at Eden where he has a good past record..ojha is the lone impressive spinner. Ashwin a major flop-he has taken bagful of wkts vs Windies & Kiwis- who can be bowled out by any club level indian spinner..his performances vs Eng & Aus -the heavyweights are extremely poor Avg 60 runs per wkt ! He bowled 40+ overs in last test for just 2 wkts-Bhaji only 25 ovrs(2 wkts). No change in batting..Viru needs to be more consistent..Virat shd be patient.& Sachin shd get runs now-eden will offer better pitch..Sachin looked good in 1st test briefly but was all at sea at Mumbai..the quality has started waning..he shd take a call soon.& skipper needs his bat to talk.W Saha is waiting-better kpr & fast improving batsman

Replace Dhoni with Gambhir as captain ASAP. Bring in Wridhiman Saha as the wk-batsman for tests. Also Yuvraj needs to be replaced with either Tiwari/ Badrinath/ Rahane. People criticize Gambhir a lot for his technique. But I think he is one character who is always willing to fight and a good fielder. Dhoni's either dominate or give up easily attitude is clearly not working. And using three specialized spinners approach is downright stupid in Kolkata where the ball reverses a lot in the evening breeze. Also Tendulkar should be given a ultimatum of two tests in this series. Final team Gambhir (c), Sehwag, Pujara, Kohli, Tendulkar, Tiwari/ Rahane, Saha, Ashwin, Khan, Dinda, Ojha

Posted by TRAM on (November 27, 2012, 19:22 GMT)

@Amit Desai, agreed. Except I will put Badri in place of R Sharma and take off Ishant. R Sharma & Ishant got soooo many chances including all formats. Also for now, I will make Ojha a certainty. So the revised team is (X/Y/Z meaning X, Y then Z being that order of our try): 1)Rahane/Vijay 2)Mukund 3)Pujara 4)Kohli 5)Badri/MTiwary 6)D Karthik/Saha 7)Irfan/Praveen 8)Ashwin 9)Ojha 10)Umesh 11)If pace track, Dinda/Ishant/Aaron OR If spin track, (PChawla/A.Mishra) Irfan is faar superior to Zaheer based on current form. Also, we have quite some captaincy materials too. (Kholi under 19 and Badri SZ, Mukund/DKarthik TNState/India A/B captains, etc). If above players for a reasonable length (not just one or two matches) there are many more youngsters waiting in queue.

Posted by Rumy1 on (November 27, 2012, 19:07 GMT)

I maintain that Ashwin is a good Ranji level offie who has a carrom ball in his armoury. It is absolutely clear that top international batsmen have already sorted him out.Look at the likes of Bravos /Chanderpauls / Cooks / Pieterson. If he can not get wickets against top class batting on monstrous turning tracks here in India what will he do abroad.Harbhajan is a proven talent who is going thru a rough patch and loss of form.Bhajji must be persisted with.He will rock again but needs the confidenc / assurance of captain /selectors.He doesn't have to prove anything now.He just has to get back his rythm.Bhajji and Ojha should be a good combo of skils + experience.Zaheer needs to go.I believe if someone is not fully fit he must not be in the team no matter who is he.Zak is well past his prime.Atleast on Indian pitches we need some pace.Umesh and Ishant must be persisted with. They look good.Dinda can be tried.Akshath Reddy (Hyd) looks much better than likes of Vijay/Mukund. He needs a call up

Posted by ixpress on (November 27, 2012, 18:58 GMT)

After winning the first test handsomely, India took England very lightly. This was evident in their body language. Batsmen were simply reluctant to apply themselves...Kohli played horrifying shot in the second innings..over confidence perhaps. I still don't understand how Yuvi (No disrespect.. of-course he is a fantastic ODI and T20 player) fits into the test team, with the kind of technique he has against both spinners and Pacers. I feel time has come for the selectors to apply serious thought into the selection process if we are to build a strong Indian test team....Lots of youngsters who are playing well at the domestic level should be given opportunities...players like Rahane, Bhuvaneshwar Kumar, Pankaj Singh, Manoj Tiwary, Rahul Sharma, Badri, Karthick etc. Revisiting test captaincy and good wicket keeper batsman should also become the top priority of the selection committee. Hope team India comes back strongly in the remaining 2 test.

Posted by Rumy1 on (November 27, 2012, 18:52 GMT)

More of same will not yield different result. The call for blooding the team with youngsters for future is also not a valid argument. Having the vision for future but keeping a focussed eye on the present, the team needs to be a blend of solid experience and youthful energy.Gambhir survived at least three times for lbw /spooked catches in his 60.He was no way comfortable on the crease till his last. I think selectors should have given him a break and brought in Wasim Jaffer who would have been back from Haj.If not, Rahane needs a chance. I still maintain that Kohli's game has serious technical weakness. He can not survive on either turning tracks or seaming fast bouncy pitches. The century that he scored in Austarlia was on a pitch that was complete dud. His failures on pacy and bouncy tracks down under are good examples . Even in England he couldn't do much and should be preserved for shorter versions. It is time now Kaif and Badrinath are brought in at No.5 and No.6 to provide solidity

When Kris Srikkanth was the chief selector there were so many cricinfo fans who singled out Srikkanth for the 'poor' team selections, in spite of Srikkanth bringing many youngsters which I dont see against Sandeep Patil. Both are my favorite players in those golden periods ('83). As far selection, I am yet to see any new youngster tried by Sandeep, though it is too short period to evaluate. If they are not going to try new players in friendly Indian pitches, when will they try?Selectors discarded Abinav Mukund after giving him touch opportunities in pacy abroad conditions, where he actually stayed at the crease much longer than other great Indian master players. I am sure Mukund would score centuries against these pretty ordinary oppositions. But then can we expect any fair deal with Indian selectors?

Sandeep Patil & Co. have been very disappointing in their 1st assignment. No tough decisions taken. Yuvraj, Harbhajan and Zaheer have to be under the microscope. Kohli, Tendulkar, Dhoni and Ashwin need to be given some more chances. We need to look at more options in the spin department. Chawla would be better than Amit Sharma due to his pace. Rahul Sharma lacks spin. Harmeet and Abdulla do not even make the Mumbai team. Negi is still work in progress. In the all rounder category, Jalaj Saxena has been given a raw treatment. They should have picked a unknown spinner or 2 who would be a surprise weapon/s against the poms.

It does not require an Einstien to point out that the India squad is totally unbalanced even for the mix of the players. Why does a team need 3 off spinners in Ashwin, Sehwag & Harbhajan. If Dhoni needs a second off spinner Sehwag is way above Bhajji as per Bedi.Ojha & Yuvraj bowl left arm orthodox spinners. There are 4 openers in Gambhir & Sehwag + 2 back up openers in Vijay & Rahane! Three seamers in ZAK,Ishant & Dinda. However there is no RH leg spinner. A wrist spinner is far more effective on a turning wicket. Dhoni lamented that Indian spinners are not as fast as Panesar. Rahul Sharma is close to 100 KPH with lot of bounce- bowls leg breaks & googlies. Why does Dhoni keeps on moaning about Indian bowlers deficiencies when he keeps dropping Rahul? Cook gets on with the job & completes it. AlsoTiwary as part time leg break bowler is far superior to Bhajji. My advice to Dhoni is stop complaining & giving excuses. It is much better to let your performance speak. This Squad is poor!

The refusal to admit that there are issues with the personnel (players) is very unfortunate. And so, the story continues...

Using same formula (same team) and expect different outcome will not work. As an Indian cricket fan, I am very disappointed by the selection. Brace to lose the series. BTW, I have boycotted IPL since the twin debacle of last year. More should do that.

The Indian Team management just has to demand performance from all 11 players. Nobody should be allowed to reserve a slot in the playing 11 by virtue of being a Legend...once upon a time, but a free wicket for the opposition today. By allowing alleged legends (read Sachin Tendulkar) a free run without demanding performance, the Indian Team management is setting a bad excample for the Ajinkya Rahane's, Pujara's, Kohli's .... of Indian Cricket. Message going out is - if you have performed last year, the rest of the team has to carry your dead, useless weight today - you don't need to perform. Replace Sachin with Rahane & see the difference. The entire batting line-up will get the message & surprise all of us by finding ways to demolish the English Bowlind attack. By keeping one non-performing batsman in the team for non-cricketing reasons, BCCI is creating a situation where the rest of the batsmen see a bad example & emulate.

wotever india does, the fact tht we lost 4-0 n failed to adapt while they only took one test to adapt n fought bck is going to hurt for a long time

Dhoni is a real hypocrite about the ball touching Gambhir's Grill and getting him out. His recent quote that its the umpire's job is ridiculous. I remember a similar Incident in a 2008? India in Sri Lanka Test Series where Ajantha Mendis debuted. One ball to dravid was caught but hit the grill of the helmet and the Indian team raised hell for the entire Test due to the dismissal. Bring the UDRS back. There were so many mistakes in the match and the UDRS would have helped all of them

Posted by PMKKR on (November 27, 2012, 16:37 GMT)

Thay should given the chance to Raina, opening should be between Sehwag & Vijay, Pujara, Virat, Raina,Yuvraj, Dhoni, Ashwin, Zaheer, Ishant/Dinda, Ozha. Sachin should be always in the dressing room and as a batting coach and some time he can play if captain wants. When regular spinners were not working Dhoni should use quite often Yuvraj, Sehwag, Raina as spinner which he has not used much in the second test.

Posted by   on (November 27, 2012, 16:24 GMT)

Make Yuvraj an opener, move Gambhir to the middle order, and put in Sharma for Harbhajan.

Posted by DerikRambo on (November 27, 2012, 16:17 GMT)

India knew they needed to protect their batsman on the 3rd day, so they had to think of sending a NIGHTWATCHMAN , yes we dont have a strong option, but the way Ojha defended it would have been a good idea to send him or may be Dhoni to put his hand up and come up and protect our main batsman as he took responsibility in the world cup final. He is no where close to the Clarks/Smiths in terms of batting or captaincy and thats where we lose the trick !!

Posted by   on (November 27, 2012, 16:12 GMT)

Give Bhajji another chance may be. But I guess if you are going in with 3 spinners, a leggie like Mishra/Sharma/Chawla will be useful. Rahane and Badri should be given chances in the middle (pun intended partly). And like Naveen Prince says - Kohli needs to relax; maybe take a leaf out of the Pujara/Cook book.

Posted by   on (November 27, 2012, 16:00 GMT)

My Eleven would be Sehwag, Yuvraj, Pujara, Sachin, Gambhir, kohli, Saha, Ashwin, Ojha, B kumar, R Dhawan. There is no place for Yuvraj in the middle order. I would rather play him as a opener. On their day sehwag and yuvraj win matches for India. Expect the last innings I hardly seen any resistance from Gambhir, since he is a good player of spin bowling we can give him a chance in the middle order. Yuvraj and Dhoni currently making middle order very brittle. Let Dhoni concentrate on shorter format. Pujara, sachin, Gambhir, Kohli, Saha will form a formidable middle order. Ojha is giving his best. Even though Ashwin is ranked well below Ajmal, swann, Vettori, Naraine, Herath, Mendis, Lyon we don hav any option to replace him. Ashwin has to show his class else we need to produce a good spinner. None of them is going to happen sooner. As far as pace dept is concerned selectors has to look at current form. Zaheer is not at his best. we need to give chances for our Ranji superstars.

Posted by   on (November 27, 2012, 15:27 GMT)

Things to change 1. We need a fast bowler like sreesanth, 2 get under the skin of batsmen(like he did to smith back in SA). 2. Ask Sachin to retire n bring Rahane @ his position. 3. Kholi must stop playing rash strokes 4. Yuvi not consistent in test,if he dont perform in nxt 2 test drop him n give poor badari a good run @ No 6(I know hes 30+ but I thing he dersve it, good 5 year left in him) 5. Drop harbhajan n bring a new spinner, i prefer Rahul Sharma r Mishra (both leggis). That wil provide some varity in our attack

Posted by   on (November 27, 2012, 15:24 GMT)

It seems both BCCI and selectors have no say in selecting the best team for India. Dhoni should become "Non Playing Caption", and Tendulkar should not be included in the playing 11 team. He should act as a mentor and moral support for the team. Tendulkar have peaked out, and is only downhill from here. Yes, he could make 100 runs, but at the cost of younger and brilliant players who are rusting to get a chance. In Australia, the senior players were rotated, so why not here in India. Rotate Gambhir, Sehwag, Khan and Yuvraj, include only 2 in the playing 11. For future: Let the selectors select the playing 11 side, and have 5 match series with the other best. Who ever wins the series is a better team to represent India. However sure a better team would advance, and not necessary the best players. Look at the First world 20 champion Indian team, they had many new faces.

I dont think present duo of off-spinners can create any more problems to england.selectors have missed a trick here.England generally performs bad against a new spinner. And england are extremely fast learners unlike india.in just one match, they worked out ashwin n even ojha somewhat.India could have selected some new spinner like rahul sharma or somebody else and sprang a surprise. Its strange how these things dont work in selectors' mind.bhajji was retained just because ashwin bowled as poorly as him,and dhoni will never drop ashwin.my view is that ashwin is gud, but england has completely worked him out and neutralised his effectiveness.if at all, they can do one thing, play ashwin as no6 batsman instead of yuvraj(he will prove to be better than yuvraj in tests) and take a new spinner.and manoj tiwary should have been called instead of murali vijay or yuvraj.

This theory of preparing of rank turner reflects the mindset of our captain and administrator. If you go to Australia every pitch from Gabba to Adelaide to SCG has a unique character. These characters have a history of their own. Adelaide is more like a Sub continental pitch, Gabba is bouncy and swings late in the day. SCG gets slow as the days goes by. The same is in England. Oval is rubber like bounce, which comes nicely to bat.Headingley and Edgebestan are typically English swinging conditions. In India over ambitions and ego hinders the understanding of Geography and climate. We have seen Mumbai pitch behave like a Bouncy and swinging late in the day kind of pitch. Even if you try to make it a loose pitch the good red dust over it the loose part will come out on the first day and from the second day it would again bounce and this is what happened. Respect Nature and Geography and don't tinker with the pitches.

Interesting calls for making Sachin Bat at Five or six. Dhoni can be pushed up and be asked to be aggressive , as his defense leaves a lot to be desired. Sachin can play with the tail and in the long run it could be beneficial for India in terms of producing competent lower order players.

Posted by ProdigyA on (November 27, 2012, 14:43 GMT)

One thing many people are loosing sight of is MS Dhoni. His captaincy has been under so much scrutiny that Dhoni as a player is happily forgotten. Forget as a captain, Dhoni does not deserve a place in the Test team even as a player. There are much better wicket keepers in India. He had a horrible time as a batsman in Eng/Aus and India was supposedly where he shold have come back. But he has been very bad here too. Ive heard people saying that there are no options as a captain apart from Dhoni. Seriously? Is the situation really that bad that we cant figure out a single player from the playing 11 to captain the team.

Posted by jimbond on (November 27, 2012, 14:41 GMT)

A few changes, Kumble could be persuaded to come out of retirement and play the remaining two tests. He could definitely get wickets on turners. I also hear recently about life ban on Azhar being lifted, he should be still below 50 and much fitter than the likes of Ashwin, and could also play spin. And in the bargain, also persuade either Dravid or Laxman or both to come back- at least with them, the team wont crumple the way they did in mumbai. If these are very radical suggestions, they can do the normal, try out Rahane who has rarely failed the selectors. And get Rayudu while he is still in form.

Posted by ProdigyA on (November 27, 2012, 14:37 GMT)

One thing i have noticed very closely is that Dhoni like to win or lose inside 4 days. He does not want to take the match into the 5th day at all, which is a reason why there are hardly any draws under him oflate. If the first and second day dont go in India's favour you can see that he shows no motivation at all to come back and resigns to the fact that if we are loosing anyway so better lose in 4 days and take the 5th day off. Is this only me?

It is good idea to bring a tall leg spinner into the squad (may be we can thing off Rahul Sharma) for indian condition. But still we can change the batting order bringing Sachin opening with Gambir followed by Sehwag and Yuvraj. Lets reduce the pressure for Pujara and Kohli where they both can change the game at any point. Poor performance by Zaheer the lead bowler who needs to think of his future in the Indian team. Thinking off new captaincy is not a good a idea as nobody can move the game like Dhoni. We got a better team but not able to utilize the talent in a right way.

Posted by phunny_game on (November 27, 2012, 14:25 GMT)

What is really amusing is that zaheer khan is sent higher in the order than pragyan ojha. I think ojha was defending well in the 4th innings... And that is what is required when an accomplished batsman is standing at the other end... And here we are, expecting changes in team when it cannot sort a batting order

It is most disappointing to see more of the same from the present Selectors for the Kolkatta Test.Players should be held accountable for their performance to ensure a degree of commitment. Comparison of 2 captains - Cook & Dhoni- is like chalk & cheese. Cook extracted the best out of limited talent England team whilst Dhoni did the opposite. Now India has lost at least 4 Test matches in the last 2 years under Dhoni'a leadership in <4days!. There is no intensity or fighting spirit in the team & they fold like 9 pins.Change needs to start at the top with a dynamic leader. Secondly, India needs a right arm leg spin bowler to give credibility to the spin bowling & to replace Harbhajan, who is wasting a spot. Inclusion of both Rahane & Vijay as reserve openers is meaningless whilst Tiwary is left to cool his heels. If the Indian play as poorly as at Mumbai, India will be 2-1 at the end of Kolkatta test with the present squad. A shake up was badly needed but the Selectors failed again!.

dinesh karthik in place of dhoni try piyush chawla or mishra in place of harbhajan my opinion remove dinda from squad(we need agressive fast bowler hello! sreesanth where are u we are missing the killer intinct just inject into our bowlers)

ENgland players plaing off spinners very well. Bad move by selectors. Pity thing is amit mishra (small fingers) floats too much. Pyesh chawla same category. We need Tall leg spinner who can flight the ball more.

Posted by Naeem578 on (November 27, 2012, 13:57 GMT)

I think the biggest problem for dhoni now is the kind of wicket he would want 4 the next match at kolkata. The option left is traditional flat track which will only produce a draw :-( of course 0% chance of a green top.

Posted by   on (November 27, 2012, 13:45 GMT)

good move..... it would have sent the msg to eng that they are not willing to change their team. just one change for kolkata. sehwag should come down at no 3 so that he can watch how the conditions are from the dressing room and then adjust his game accordingly. this is my team: 1.Rahane 2.Gambhir 3.Sehwag 4.Pujara 5.Tendulkar 6.Kohli 7.Dhoni 8.Ashwin 9.Khan 10.Dinda 11.Ojha

Posted by sivatejasharma on (November 27, 2012, 13:43 GMT)

my 11 from this team is ask sachin to open the only scope for him so that he can negotiate the spin also attack the fast bowlers along with sehwag, make gambhir bat at 4 so he can control effect of panesar,if you want yuv raj use him as a 3rd spinner (in my mind he should used as a attacking option against spin his hitting looks beautiful against spin but diffence the worst thing ) make track of tun no turn & bounce tracks

Posted by Anilr.82 on (November 27, 2012, 13:38 GMT)

The last match at Mumbai was more of a batting failure than a bowling failure. If we look at the first innings it was a collapse which we survived in the way of Pujara and Ashwin, but in the second innings we were not able to recover from that collapse. Off late, the batting has let us down than bowling. Any team, once they pile up a good score the opposition automatically will start feeling the pressure looking at the score. So called great batsmen (Sachin, Sehwag, Gambhir) have not been able to deliver. I guess it's been a while we saw a good batting performance from one of the best batting lines ups we have. It's high time they look at the batting and think more seriously than just criticize the spinners. Look at SA against Aus, what a match. Both teams were really good and had an intent to perform on that day, which produced a great game. I guess it's high time that we are aggressive on non-performers even though it's the most prominent player and take tough decisions.

Ishant/Dinda Have to drop and put a leg spinner in because there is some turn in eden gardens pitch.. from day one....

Posted by Feroz9700 on (November 27, 2012, 13:26 GMT)

England players are suspect against leg spin so Amit Mishra would have been a better choice instead of one of the pacers. More so b'coz the Kolkatta pitch is a slow and vicious turner and almost turns square from day one. Indian's are better of playing 3 spinners. India should have played an extra seamer in Mumbai however an extra seamer in Kolkatta would be a tactical blunder. Indian batsman r batting very defensively and instead should look to attack the English spinners, if anybody remembers how India played someone like Shane Warne when he toured India. Remember Sachin hitting him all over the park like he was net bowler. Instead English batsman like KP r doing the same to Indian spinners now. Got to be positive.

Albert Einstein : -Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. In our Indian team context it probably can be proved by the continous selection of Harbhajan and defeat for Indian team every time he is picked

Posted by onkar567 on (November 27, 2012, 13:05 GMT)

This is the best possible team that the selectors could select after a loss.Any changes would put the team in disarray and that is not what the indians are looking to.Also the selection of 'THE GOD or SACHIN' shouldn't be criticised.I have been his biggest fan and i still feel that a wonderful answer to all the critics is just round the corner in the next 2 tests in the form of hundred.SACHIN GO AHEAD.....U WERE,ARE,AND WILL BE OUR STAR...AND UR JUST AN INNINGS AWAY FROM GETTING BACK INTO FORM..HOPE TEAM INDIA WINS AT KOLKATA EMPHATICALLY AND PROVES TO ENG THAT THEY ARE THE BEST....

Posted by jb633 on (November 27, 2012, 13:05 GMT)

I can understand the calls to drop Sachin because India has plenty of good batsmen in the ranks but calls for Zaheer's head are ridiculous. I mean which seamers would you bring in. People having a go at him need to understand that these pitches have absolutley nothing in it for the seamers, yet in the first test both of your seamers bowled well. I think India should prepare a wicket with a touch more movement on day one. I mean surely you have the players to cope with a touch of lateral movement. And what if England win the toss you still need the seamers to contribute in some way. Personally I think the Mumbai pitch went overboard on the degree of assistance it was giving the spinners. I think a good test pitch should start turning by the last session of day at the earliest. India has a class swing/seam bowler yet the conditions are always stacked in favour of the average spinners. People will say they are nervous after the tour of England but surely class players can adapt.

This is what Ian Chappel said about Ponting: "I think the selectors should say to Ricky Ponting, 'Mate we're happy to give you a fond farewell in Perth, but you've got to announce your retirement before the game', for the obvious reason that the selectors could get badly embarrassed if he goes well," Chappell told ESPNcricinfo.

Can we replace the words "PONTING" and "PERTH" with "SACHIN" and "EDENS""?

Posted by sivatejasharma on (November 27, 2012, 12:56 GMT)

i think for india panesar is making more impact than swann a good left handed player can negotiate the effect of him but unfortunately there is no left hand batsmen with capablity of playing test matches so take mukund into side leave sachin and make mukund open gambhir at 4 thats it

@Kaushik Rokzz - Are you serious? Dropping Ashwin!! just look at his test average in bat and he just broken the record in the 1st Match by getting fastest 50 test wickets by an Indian. He is the second high run getter in the 1st innings in the 2nd match. Better open your eyes a bit more and decide!

Posted by   on (November 27, 2012, 12:52 GMT)

There should be enormous number of changes in the future test series to come,Zaheer, bhajji, viru, sachin, yuvi, mahi should be permanently dropped from the squad and gauti should be made interim test captain and after watching the capabilities of youngsters, new young captain like pujara or any other youngster should be selected as captain.batsmen like Dinesh karthik, manoj tiwary, suresh raina, rahane, vijay, baba aparajith or abhinav mukund, ambati rayudu should be tested in the future series.Bowlers like pankaj singh, rahul sharma, piyush chawla should be given an opportunity to prove their skills in test matches.Totally india need to select a team based on pitch condition and if a player is good in playing in bouncy track then he should be sent for abroad series while if a player is good in playing spinners paradise then they should be selected for sub continent series. Overall test squad should be revamped.

Yes, as someone pointed out, the photograph accompanying this piece is ironical. ... But apt. Is it not saying, that the wicket keeper could have 'bowled' better, and a bowler could have 'batted' better, than what we witnessed in Mumbai (may be, with the exception of Pujara's batting in the 1st innings)

Posted by phunny_game on (November 27, 2012, 12:44 GMT)

These two sides have so much in common A destructive batsman capable of winning a game all by himself: ENG-KP IND-Sehwag An over hyped off spinner: ENG-Swann IND-Ashwin (though swann is still way ahead) A left arm spinner who is better than the off spinner but still never quite in the limelight: ENG-Monty IND-Ojha A fast bowler who is better than his the other pacers in the team but still not always the preferred one: ENG: Finn IND: Umesh And a no. 6 Spot that is open to almost everyone in the domestic circuit BUT LOOK AT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THEIR RECENT PERFORMANCES... IND are far behind in each of those. I hope they improve before SA, or else that tour will just demolish the confidence of these boys and the belief of indian cricket fans.

Having watched Tendulkar since his debut , I have always been his fan and supported him when critics called for his head. But on seeing his performances since World cup final , even I the biggest fan of his has no option but to admit, its time he goes. Harby is a mystery spinner indeed. His deliveries never spin and he delivers once in a blue moon but he is always mysteriously in the team. Some better spinners like Murali Kartick , Iqbal Abdullah and now Harmeet can probably win matches on tracks where Bhaji cannot even take a wicket. Dhoni used to score in Tests at home at least but now even he has gone a protest strike of some sort. It seems time for few changes in team is here or else we will go back to 90s era when one star performer performed (then tendulkar ,Pujara nowadays) and other failed continously and as result team India failed more than they won.

Posted by   on (November 27, 2012, 12:32 GMT)

@Amit Desai. I fully concur with the team you are proposing. That is the kind of team for the future. Not a team including, Sachin, Zak, Sehwag, Gambhir, Bhajji, Dhoni, Yuvi and so on! Such a young team should be tried out in Indian conditions first, on traditional kind of test pitches, which favor pacers on Day 1, and spinners on Day 5, and going through the transition gradually from Day 2 through Day 4. These 8 tests, scheduled to play in India would have been the ideal ones to try out these youngsters (including replacing the non-performing ones and replacing them with others from the large pool of players of the same calibre, youth, fire within, and ambitions to play for India for a long time to come). If we lose with that kind of team, it is worth it. In any case it may not be worse than an innings defeat or losing by 10 wickets!

Posted by   on (November 27, 2012, 12:31 GMT)

I think they have selected the team only for 3rd test, to see the result. If India wins, then 4th test would be the same squad. Draw probably they will think of some changes depending upon the performace. Lose and then MS Dhoni retires.

I would take out ashwin ecause of his inability to play test cricket. My policy of bringing Sehwag down the order si that once the chips are down and the score is like 86/4, he can come in, show some positivity, counter attack and change the state of the game.

If selectors did not want to make any changes even after this big embarassing loss, they should have announced team for 3 or may be all 4 tests at first place. @ VIKAS BHUTANI: Even if saching makes 100 in next game, its not gone a resolve the problem. we don't want somebody making 100 after 2 yrs. We want someone consistent ( like he was before). Bottom line is, he is over now and shud retire right now indstead of loosing all respect which he has earned. currently he is just blocking a way for other youngsters.

Posted by phunny_game on (November 27, 2012, 11:52 GMT)

I don't expect radical changes, this team is fine... But the selectors need to talk to Sachin and also Dhoni. Sachin is past his prime, and Dhoni is simply not a good enough batsman in TESTS. Rest of the team is good. Also the three spinner theory was never a good one according to me. An ideal three spinner attack would have been an off spinner(ashwin), a lefty(ojha) & a leg spinner. Anyway, that test is gone now. Also all the other batsmen were beaten by the spinners in second innings, but what were KOHLI n ASHWIN thinking while playing those shots. It had nothing to do with the pitch or bowler... Just irresponsible.

Dhoni should retire from test cricket. His batting is never been top class in test matches. He is proving to be bad keeper too in recent times. he is not a good captain in this format either. he should only concentrate on playing ODIs. Tendulkar should retire from all kind of cricket with immediate effect. Zaheer should concentrate on test matches, and retire from ODIs and T20, Sehwag already retired from T20, should retire from ODIs too and only play test matches. I doubt Ashwin and Rahul Sharma as test bowlers. Probably Stick with Ojha, Harbhajan, and Mishra. Well fast bowling depends on who remains fit, also feel that Vinay Kumar or Dinda cannot be a long term solution, as they are small and almost 30 year old. Rather look for Shami Ahmed, MS Gony and Parwider Awana, if Ishant, Umesh, Aaron, Sreesanth, RP Singh, Munaf are not fit. WP Saha should come in as keeper batsman. Mohammad Kaif should come for contention. His last two years has been great. Rest looks alright.

So, in the 3rd Test also, there have a chance of same 11 that lost to England in Mumbai. Only chance will be for Dinda or Ishant if India want to play with 2 spinners. It will 100th test for Harbhajan if 3 spinner will be played. Sachin should retire in Nagpur Test. A ton will also not prove that he is in good form. Other youngster should get chance. There are lots of good player in India waiting for playing international cricket.

There is a lot of support for Tendulkar to carry on. As a Pakistani supporter, it is very clear that for them Tendulkar is bigger than India or that they are not capable of statisitical analysis. In his last 10 test innings, Tendulkar has scored average 15 with highest score of 27. How many of them are aware of this? Another point, India will continue to go down in test rankings and stay there as test cricket is a million miles away from t20. T20 requires short term thnking, short term execution, no need for sustainability, and a lock of luck. As t20 is financially far too rewarding and test cricket crowd is disappearing, test cricket has got to suffer. This is scientific.

In England 2011, i was gutted ! In australia 2011-12, i was devastated. Now, i am just resigned to my fate as an Indian cricket fan. Denial, obstinacy, selfishness, self above team.. as someone said here ... "god save the indian cricket fan" for the team not know, what they are doing to him !

I was expecting BRAVE decisions when they said they "meeting" to decide the team. Brave decisions such as DROPPING SACHIN AND ASKING HIM TO PROVE IN DOMESTIC GAMES. But this proved to be not a MEETING but a preparation for press conference to read out the same names again.

sachin one of the great batsmen in the world.. you don't retire now. you can bat well another two years..media creating this kind of complication......

If the selectors don't see any need for change, I don't know when they will see any need for change.

Posted by   on (November 27, 2012, 10:47 GMT)

Keep Harbhajan he has this knack of firing in Cal! Maybe a daring shuffle of Rahane as opener, push Viru to No 5 and axe Sachin, make Kohli bat at No 4. As for fast bowlers, Zaheer also struggling to achieve pace. Ashwin to stay out and Dinda to play.

England should axe Broad, and bring back Bresnan to partner Anderson. It is now sure that England will play Monty and Swann for the rest of the tour. Eden might bring out the best of KP again.

As expected, what is the option available? The worry is poor form of Sachin Tendulkar.Saurav Ganguly played 113 Tests between 1996-2008 and scored around 631 runs in his last 10 matches with an average of 37.11,Rahul Dravid(1996-2012) made 835 runs at an average of 46.38 in the last ten matches where as Laxman had an average of 31.61 in his last 10 Tests.Sachin Tendulkar averages 30.23 and has scored 514 runs only in the last 10 Tests that he has played.

Gambhir, Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh, Dhoni, Harbhajan, Zaheer should be replaced by all those under 19 world cup winning team members to make sure that india has a good team in the near future in tests.

Posted by cuteabu on (November 27, 2012, 10:28 GMT)

As per my View , the Selectors must look Sachin to bat No 5.The aggression is still there with sachin. These days not staying long time due to his aggression. He must try to defend few initial overs and then he can try to play his strokes. And one moer changes require in batting order .Just for few games he can come down the order and less pressure will help sachin to bat in different way.But I beleive just one knock sachin can shut up everybody. Instead of repeating batting at No4 just change the statics do something different in Kolkota Test. So schwag,Gambhi,Pujara,Kohli,Sachin,Yuvi,Dhoni,Aswin and rest.

Posted by   on (November 27, 2012, 10:27 GMT)

Sachin will come back strong and people who are talking crap about him they will shut up. I think selecters need to drop Yuvi and ashwin as Ashwin can't spin ball and Yuvi is not a test batsman. They don't need manoj he is just another batsman with no test batsman skill and if someone is suggesting rohit sharma than please go to mental hospital. May be under 19 captain. Ashwin basically thinking he is playing in nets and its ok to experiment during the match. Bhaji can be economical and take wickets as well 406 wickets explains everything.

Posted by satish_XI on (November 27, 2012, 10:26 GMT)

All those who are criticizing Dhoni for asking the spin track, use your brains and understand what he is saying ... he says one who plays well on that track should win it ..not a draw (it has to be a hard fought draw for that matter)... Atleast he is daring enough to ask for those pitches stating he needs a result out of a game.

Posted by   on (November 27, 2012, 10:20 GMT)

Not too much could have been changed in the team. Not much done.. Barring Tiwary not many options.... Badri badly out of form.... In the last game, things would have been different if either Sehwag of Pujara had fired in the 2nd innings. We might have been praising the captain and calling our spinners great. Some Englishmen would have said crazy pitches and farcical series. Ultimately it was one great knock- Pietersen and one bad session post tea which sunk us. Cant do much. India can come back in Kolkata which has seen many a great display in the past..... We do need openers to fire or 2 among the top 3. Virat has been off color hopefully he will come back here...If top 2 or 3 fire, Sachin and Yuvraj will do fine too.... 2 seamers, 2 spinners. Keep Bhajji out. Ask Ashwin to bowl full and not give room to cut. We hv to show heart and put a bigger price on their wickets. We can do it..... guys.... Fact is only 3 Englishmen Cook, Prior and Pietersen batted well.... Get them...

@sandy_bangalore: Agreed Buddy. Indian fans deserve performing players in the Team than the stat book readers like Gambir or Sachin

Posted by Thyagu5432 on (November 27, 2012, 10:14 GMT)

I think the team has to put their Mumbai defeat behind and get back to groove in the remaining series, which I think they will. I would have preferred a leg spinner (Amit Mishra) instead of Bajji. Zaheer was in such a great form in the world cup last year getting us wicket every time we needed one. But something has gone wrong and I hope he gets his touch back. Since Bajji is in the 15, it is better to bring Ishant in his place and leave the spinning job to Ashwin and Ojha with support from Yuvi and even Sehwag. The way things are, we will only have 10 batsmen (we start with 0 for 1, Sachin's wicket is given). Like somebody said, it is only Cook and Pitersen who have made the difference so far. I think we will play Panesar better from now on. Mumbai defeat has made this series interesting and I hope they now do not make it nervy.

may be every1 missed but see what difference geniune fast bowler makes, though umesh didnt got many wickets like ojha or ashwin he picked it at crucial junctures & surely team india sorely missed him.

poor rahane i think he'll soon forget hw to bat....may be dressing room chat will help him to become good commentator

Genuine test match players like Rahane , Tiwari should be given chances . look at how good Pujara is proving to be, who came in for a senior player . Although Yuvraj is a terrific stroke maker , you dont actually expect him to play a grueling innings in difficult conditions , especially abroad . May be Tiwari and Rahane wont take the world by storm by smashing 6 sixes a over or a 80 ball century ,they are more liable to score consistently and more importantly during difficult conditions . Sachin in the last year has looked absolutely horrible , atleast for such a great player .

Yuvraj, Harbhajan still in squad..this SUMS up Indian cricket perfectly! Emotions and past records are given far more precedence than current form and potential. And Gambhir is a flat track king who dosent give two hoots about the needs of the team. Its sad that despite being a one-sport nation, we still dont have a cricket team that the masses deserve

Posted by   on (November 27, 2012, 9:44 GMT)

The selection of Dinda seems to be politically motivated!! It would have been better to select either Balaji or Munaf. Dinda is more suited to ODI because in the test format, he will be quickly found out, due to lack of variation etc. Furthermore, Indian selectors should reward Cricketer's who are doing well in the domestic league because introduction of new players into the side always brings fresh perspective and enthusiasm so the side. Good luck to India.

the England side was a quick learner after their Ahmadabad test loss, but , i am afraid , the same could not be said about the Indian cricket board.they made no changes in the side that lost the test match at Mumbai. Now, England spin bowling department looks much more stronger than the Indian spin bowling department. they should have thought about the other options for the all important 3rd test match, that if England wins, will not only free them from an expected series loss, which was presumed at the beginning of the test series , but also highly boost up their confidence for the fourth test match of the series also . this is what i think, i don't know about the others, how they feel about it ?????????????????

Until, we have players like Yuvaraj,Dhoni who are not technically strong we cannot win TEST matches..Karthick,Saha,Patel are 10 times better batsmen than Dhoni in TEST matches.. also this is right time for sachin to take retirement (at least in one format)..

there are players who have performed consistently in Domestic level and still did not get a chance in the national side..Amol Mazumdar, Sharath, Bist, Abinav Mukundh, Rohith shrma, Shikar Dawan,Pankaj Singh.....etc...

current Indian TEST team players are simply surviving with past glory..

Posted by   on (November 27, 2012, 9:37 GMT)

This is ridiculous. Still Harbhjan Singh? Even he can't get single top order wicket in pitch that assist spinners.. even Panesar and Swann getting many wickets. What Kohli doing in the Test team. he is not test material. Tiwary should be selected in place of kohli. Murali Kartik is better spinner than Harbhjan. or Amit Mishra should be recalled as English players are not good against Leg Spin. I don't have faith on sachin perfom again as his time is over already.. Simply england will win the series 3-1.. Sorry for Indians... A Proud indian...

Posted by willwin on (November 27, 2012, 9:32 GMT)

Please try out Manoj Tiwari or Badrinath at no 6. Also keep a watch on Kohli. No great perfomances by him in tests to be certain of a place in the Test team

being an asian, its disturbing at the moment that all the asian teams are playing badly and getting humiliated. as all have rightly pointed out, the issue is carrying PASSENGERS in the team. india have to choose sooner than later between persisting with fired bullets(losing) or getting new ammunition. look at example of V-rat. he was given chance and proved. how can u judge a player by not giving him a chance to prove his worth. harbhajan should be given 1 more test as farewell and then he should be forced to retire. sachin should retire immediately. dhoni should give up captaincy and try to retain his place on merit and performance. zaheer has also passed his peak. need to give new FAST bowlers as much as games as possible. rohit sharma should be given extended run in all formats

Posted by   on (November 27, 2012, 9:17 GMT)

I was hoping Chawla would be given a chance..he caused problems for England in the T20 and a leg spinner instead of a second off spinner seemed logical....I don't think we should make sweepiong changes..maybe Rahane for Yuvraj..and give Sachin two more tests to prove himself..I'm not sure Dinda can trouble the English..so maybe the three spinner option again..I'm sure India will work out tactics for Panesaar and I think we'll bounce back..

why give chance again to H.singh? why not A. mishra or p chawla? what basis ishant selection? P.singh or P awana is in good form in last 4 ranji seasons?

Posted by   on (November 27, 2012, 9:07 GMT)

I am saying this from last many years that Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina are not test material but still we keep giving them chances in test matches. If anyone say that Yuvraj Singh can bat in test matches I would say that he does not know the abcd of batting. His technique is so faulty that he can only survive in oneday or T20. He may have fought and won the battle against cancer but it does not mean that he is fit to play test matches, whereas more deserving ones like Ajinkya Rahene and Manoj Tiwari are warming the benches. If selection would not have been faulty we would not have lost against england. We have 2 off spinners in the team who doesn't bowl off spin balls they keep trying doosra and teesra but they donot know that balling off spin is an art and one needs to entice batsman to play on front foot outside the off stump so that there is gap between bat and pad so that he get bowled or give a bat pad catch which Swan was doing beautifully, only Ojha bowled properly.

Posted by muthavimal on (November 27, 2012, 9:07 GMT)

I am indeed surprised tp see name of Sachin and Yuvraj in the squad declared tor 3rd test to be played at kolkutta. It is time to say good bye to Tendulkar. If selection committee will not take action in that case Tendulkar will choose to play for next more 10 years.

Posted by   on (November 27, 2012, 9:03 GMT)

About time to take a hard call on Dhoni. And though Gambhir was the lone hand in that second dig @ Mumbai, his innings can be thought of as very selfish in the context of the game. He didn't farm the strike and that looked pretty alarming given the match situation.

Posted by   on (November 27, 2012, 8:58 GMT)

Why not selectors pick Balaji-Munaf Patel or Vinay Kumar if Umesh is injured. Even Irfan may be considered. Are all these players injured? Also one or two young should be tested before starting Pakistan Series.

India have played 9 test against england at eden garden and won 3 while lost only 1, stats shows that this ground is good for team india but now situation is different and current english team has potential as they proved in mumbai so I think it will be difficult for team india to win here this time. While cook and peterson in great form.

Posted by dork29 on (November 27, 2012, 8:47 GMT)

This decision makes sense. You do not start changing and chopping just because we lost a test. True, there are question marks on a few players. Tendulkar has been abysmal and he is unlikely to take any part in Indian cricket after the English tour. Ashwin's bowling has been very ordinary and he seriously needs to get back kto the drawing board. Gambhir, though somewhat successful in the second innings of the Mumbai test needs to work hard to maintain his place in the eleven He has also been accused of not farming the strike enough to protect the tailenders. Bhajji is obviously lucky - he neither contributed with the bat or the ball. So, we need to keep the options open for the fourth test. Dhoni could have Pujara open with Gambhir and push Sehwag to number 4. Donedulkar could tramp in at number 5. That would probably give him some respite and help rediscover his form a bit. But he is slowly becoming an albatross around the neck - we need to accept it. I guess we will win at Kolkata.

Posted by   on (November 27, 2012, 8:46 GMT)

If Sachin is honest to himself, this should be last series for him. Selectors should choose rahane & dhawan for Oz series if the present openers not performed well in this series. Selection should be on performance based. Not by their past performance. If this method followed, all big names called sachin, sehwag, gambhir, dhoni, zaheer would lost their place. These guys are not performing well for past 12 months (esp.ly in tests).

Posted by PiyushD on (November 27, 2012, 8:46 GMT)

Team for tests in India should be around this Sehwag,GG/Rahane,Pujara,Sachin,Kohli,Manoj Tiwari,W Saha,Zaheer/Irfan, Umesh,Ashwin, Ojha. Dhoni has no place on his currrent batting/wicketkeeping/captaincy form. Manoj Tiwari is must looking at the kind of form he is in. Yuvraj is highly inconsistent in Tests.Zaheer is an excellent test bowler but IP should be a likely replacement. No place for chicken heart Bhajji, if he gets hit on a flighted ball, the very next ball is a flat, he needs to come out of mindset of being economical. I would have liked to have a 3rd seamer may be if India is playing Irfan and top 4 are in form I would have the 5th bowler. I think Dhoni is Test captain, days are numbered. Any result except 3-1 from here should be end of Dhoni in Tests.

Posted by Rogerunionjack on (November 27, 2012, 8:43 GMT)

Does the photograph accompanying this article show your skipper & wicket keeper practicing his bowling, with your medium pacer practicing his batting? On a more serious note to my Indian friends, it's not the end of the world. One needs to take both defeat & victory with grace. The series is still 1-1 so there is all to play for. If the situation were the other way around, we certainly wouldn't be calling for wholesale changes. Best of luck to both teams.

c'mon gme a brk sachin again nt retiring.it would have been perfect if he would have retird in mumbai his home ground.gambhir should have been dropped two years ago.he wasnt performing then neither nowm vijay would have been better option after he scored his maiden century he wasnt selected.selection is wayward really.the most amusing one is bhajji selection. atleast raina was performing well in domestics afetr india a matches n been selected. would have bbeen excellent gift for him as b'day. this selection panel sucks.but look at team right now the out of playing 11 9 should have been dropped.

Posted by   on (November 27, 2012, 8:42 GMT)

Selection for 3rd test is spilled-milk. So, no sense crying over it. Here are some questions for the 4th test & beyond:

Can Dhoni retire from Test Cricket and just focus on the two shorter formats? Can Sachin gracefully ride into the sunset? Can Sehwag play FOR THE TEAM, or opt out? Can Ashwin bat more like VVS (which he certainly can try) than try to play like Sehwag? Can Kohli regain the form he seems to have lost ever since this series started? Can Ashwin bowl like Swann, focusing on his strengths, than try to be an inventor of new things? Can Ojha, who already proved his worth, get turn & the accuracy like Monty? Can selectors show guts, for a change? Build a team for the future? Can they ignore history & reputation and select players based on the current form & fitness? Can they blood in at least ONE youngster, in every forthcoming test? There are 5 more tests coming up to be played in India. Can...? Can...? Can...? Too many questions. Answers, most probably is Won't! or Can't!

What is the point in picking 15, just like England and Aus does pick 13 and probably relase the 13th on the day of the match..while club players can be encouraged to do substitute fielding..what will Vijay, Dinda, Rahane gain other than some dressing room discussion? Vijay missed playing against Delhi who are in prime form, Dinda could have had impact in the Bengal match along with Shammi, only Rahane might have had another dud 100 on flat pitch and could have stayed back. SRT wont hang his boots until Aus series, may be even SA, so no point in fooling ourselves. Selectors wont talk to him, they dont have guts and he will live in denial mode. He may score 100 in Kolkatta but what point does it server if he quits after Aus and let a new player face Steyn, Morke, Philander in SA?? Even Pujara struggled the last time there, imaganie a Tiwary or Rahane suddenly put overseas.

Kohli or Pujara to captain Indian side. kick out the old dogs, they will play in IPL .. If you can not drop Tendulkar from the team, at least omit him from the final eleven. For Kolkata Test Indian Team Should be Gambhir-Rahane-Pujara-Yuvraj-Kohli-Sehwag-Dhoni-Ashwin-Ojha-Zaheer & Ishant

Posted by   on (November 27, 2012, 8:36 GMT)

It is time to rest Sachin,Gatam,Yuvi and Bhaji all does not have the stuff to play right now. If they play the current ranji and prove their best consistently by that time they will get some confidence to play international game.Till that time give chance for New pacers like Bhvaneshwar,Manoj tiwary,Rahane,Vijay or Badrinath.

Dhoni should always be more attacking than defence. If his strategy is attacking then he may do wonders and the same intention will take the team to a different level. We are missing the service of Wicket keeper batsmen who hangs arond and rotate the strke and get the maximum sae of the tailandors to explore a positive scores.

Gambhir & Yuvraj should be dropped from Test Team and Please give a chance to Rahanne ....

But as things are now, Sachin will keep playing till (1) he completes 200 Tests, (2) the sponsors who have contracted him allow him to retire ! (3) his son plays with him in a Test to create a world-record---and BCCI will happily oblige Sachin (4) he will fall flat on the wicket while getting bowled--like Ricky Ponting did recently and (5) till the entire Indian team protests against his being a passenger--no bowling, fielding at the deep to chase the balls to the boundary line and of course, not making runs! Of course, so long as this continues, Gambhir, Sehwag, Yuvraj, Bhajji and Zaheer will enjoy the benefit of such softness of BCCI. God save the Indian cricket fans !

hey common select raina and drop gambir.....suresh raina will be middle order ..........raina will bowl and bat and fielder......

Posted by Raggie on (November 27, 2012, 8:16 GMT)

Then y do they have selection meetings, they should have simple called the press and told them that they are retaining team, and why there is a 3rd spinner any way there wont be 3 spinners playing in kolkatta they should have picked a fast bowler like Shami Ahmed or another batsman to have a back up incase of injury.

Poor, in fact very poor, the worst i must say, to keep those losers around for another test, you will never learn india

Posted by Aaranya on (November 27, 2012, 8:11 GMT)

This is fine. Just need to have Dinda in playing XI instead of Harbhajan. Kolkata should be the last chance for Yuvaraj to cement his place in test squad. Yes, Sachin will retire on his own after this series, if he fails in remaining two tests. Vijay and Rahane to wait.

Do we need selectors? Let the sponsors decide whom they want to play. Indian team for long has been moving advertisement poles on the field. Indian cricket lovers need to unite to save Indian cricket from the clutches of BCCI and Corporates.

Why no Amit Mishra? He is much better in Indian conditions and better than Harbhajan. Also I m done with Sachin, failures even at home conditions are just not justifiable. I would play Kohli at 4, Manoj Tiwary can replace Yuvraj at 5.Stick with 2 seamers( Zaheer & Dinda) and 2 spinners(Mishra & Ojha)

Wow!!! I think this team is really strong and by just a defeat in one game we can't drop any player and i think this squad is really strong and the best.

I thing this is very good team that same side.we hope, we will win the next two test. All the best Indian Team.

Again Ajinkya Rahane is included only for substitute fielding!! Remove Sehwag and Gambhir.. All will be fine!!!

Posted by Dhanvanth on (November 27, 2012, 7:52 GMT)

This was always gonna happen! The bcci and dhoni never change their attitude and they ll pay the price for it in kolkata test. Hope India gets humiliated another time!!

Indian Team looking for a Fast Bowling Allrounder a for a long time. Why selectors are not giving an opportunity for players like RISHI DAWAN & BHUWANESHWAR KUMAR. Presently, both are young & performing well. If six batsman cant score runs, how can you expect from the seventh batsman do so? So always better to go with genuine/ specialist 5 batsman + WK who can bat + 1 allrounder (Spin or fast) + 2 Fast bowlers + 2 spinners.

Good thing that the selectors have maintained the faith in this team. India is sure to bounce back and win in Eden.

Please, if you don't have the guts to drop Sachin, because of pressure from sponsors, at least play Rahane in his place in the final XI. Including him in the playing XI will cost India the series, now.. not just one test. Manoj Tiwari should have been there in place of Yuvraj...

I was hoping Gambhir to be dropped the way he played in 4th day morning. I loved his aggression and always thought that he is right candidate to be captain of this Indian side. But the way he played, he gave every sense to Eng side that this Indian side just want to get over with it quickly. He did not even tried to farm the strike, he could have easily took the target to around 100 and probably completed his century too. That does not mean we would have won (Eng were far better and deserve their win) but Eng team would have sure doubts in mind. Selectors do not have guts to drop 'God' but they sure could have dropped Gambhir (Rahane), Bhajji (anyone, would be better than Bhajji), Dhoni (Parthiv is knocking doors big time). This was the right time, if there was any time, to instill young blood in this side. Dhoni is awkward captain in tests.

Pick second seamer. Allow Ishant and Dinda to bowl constant reverse swing in nets and pick one of them. Get rid of Me.Bhajji 99* soon. Pick M Kartik or even Mishra. They will be far far better cricketers than Mr.Bhajji. No retirement is rather hurting!! Not having Saha is rather bemusing. He should be the no.1 choice for tests. Wish Dhoni retires from the format sooner.

This is ridiculous. The selectors still think that sachin, harbhajan, gambhir will perform. Shocking to see the BCCI justifying sachin's performance and the president of it giving interviews about his past records. Who cares about those apart from sachin himself. The system must be changed like Australia no player is bigger than the game Indian cricket is an exemption from this, This team cannot be number one again unless performance based selection is done.

India looking for a bowling Allrounder for a long time. Why cant give opportunities to players like RISHI DAWAN & BHUWANESHWAR KUMAR. Presenty both are very good form in batting & bowling

Posted by JoieDeVivre on (November 27, 2012, 7:35 GMT)

Wasn't this expected? When have we seen Indian selectors make radical changes? Not that one defeat should, but the manner of the defeat is rude awakening and if selectors don't act now, God knows when. Ashwin is slowly but steadily going the Harbhajan way, if he doesn't get wicket in his first or opening spell tries million things. Gautam Gambhir & Virender Sehwag are quite frankly liabilities (despite Sehwag getting 100 in the 1st Test) and seriously the selectors should say regardless of what happens we will invest in youth and this is their final chance, same thing with MS Dhoni, he looks so insipid when the opposition is on top. I guess if we invest in youth now, worst result would be we lose the series and only a die hard optmist would believe India will win the series with this squad. Alas, will this ever happen in Indian Cricket? I'm afraid not and as supporters we continue to live on hope and tear our hair when the team pefrorms as woefully as they did.

I dont know why Bhajji is getting Place in 15 Players also... His Performance was bad in IPL & there is no such Good performance in Domestic Cricket to make comeback

Posted by Edassery on (November 27, 2012, 7:30 GMT)

Wow, the great men playing safe! They should have shown the guts to drop those who don't belong to the test cricket league at least - i.e. Yuvraj, M Vijay etc.

Then the oldies need to go - Sachin, Zak and Harbhajan etc who after playing so many tests don't seem to understand their respective roles.

Dinda due to his home advantage may be a good choice for Kolkata but I liked the way Pankaj Singh bowled his heart out in flat Ranji wickets this season. I expected a call for more solid people like Badarinath and Tiwari.

It is better to rest Sachin at least for this test match and provide a place for Rahane / Murali Vijay in the top order to make some useful runs.
