Rayudu replaces Tiwary in India T20 squad

Injured India batsman Manoj Tiwary has been replaced in the India squad for the Twenty20s against England by Ambati Rayudu. Tiwary's injury was diagnosed as a side strain. He had picked up the injury, which will keep him out of action for six weeks, during a Ranji Trophy game on Sunday, while batting in Bengal's first innings against Saurashtra.

Rayudu, who has played for Baroda in the Ranji Trophy since the 2010-11 season, has had a prolific run this year, with scores of 64, 85, 10, 54, 1, 131 and 58 in his previous five games. A bit-hitting middle-order batsman, Rayudu did not have too much success on his last Twenty20 assignment: October's Champions League T20, where he played for Mumbai Indians. But in IPL 2012, he was Mumbai Indians second-highest scorer behind Rohit Sharma, with 333 runs from 15 innings at a strike-rate of 132.14. He is yet to debut for India across formats.

For Tiwary, who captains Bengal in the Ranji Trophy, this is a second setback in quick succession - he had suffered a wrist problem earlier in the season. When fit, he had shown some good form, scoring 191 against Gujarat, and also making 93 against England for the Board President's XI last month.

India play two Twenty20s against England, on December 20 and 22, and that is followed up by limited-overs series' against Pakistan running into the first week of January. Later in January, England return for a one-day series.

10 years ago, when you played several magical match winning innings for junior India teams, we all thought here is a great India prospect who would carry the great Indian batting tradition. I know, you had major challenges in your career with the behemoth heading the HCA, putting is useless sons ahead of talented players like you. The result, Hyderabad hardly had any notable players to showcase. However, its a better late than never case for you. All the very best!!

We Hyderabadis here in India are rejoicing this chap's inclusion. First, we had the hot and cold chapter of Mohammad Azharuddin in the 90's, followed by the magical wrist-work and undying spirit of VVS Laxman in 2000's..and..look who's next! finally justice has been done to this exciting heck of a talent, Rayudu. Simplicity, technical class and elegance is a strikingly similar feature of all the three mentioned. After the ugly Shivlal Yadav episode, the ICL non-sense, his switch from Hyderabad cricket, all these years of perseverance on the sidelines and heroics with Mumbai Indians..finally he gets what he deserves. The praise that he's gotten before debut..he's undoubtedly destined for big things.A perfect evidence of how talent never goes unappreciated. And coming in at around a time when the Master's bidding farewell only makes it better. Hopefully Rayudu makes the most of his chances and lives up to the expectation and hype he generated. Can't wait to watch him in Indian colours.

I AGREE with BEN George - but with minor changes - All U-19 ex players like Kohli, Rayudu,Chand,Harmeet and some other excellent players from all other states should get a run of atleast 10 ODIs each to prove their mettle. Rahane ,Rayudu (wk), Kohli , Chand , , Raina, Yuvraj , IrfanPathan + 3 bowlers + Harmeet singh . Kohli to be captain with Manoj Tewary and Rohit Sharma to be reserve batters but should regularly be rotated with someone in team on regular basis.

Selectors should built a team for 2015 Worldcup. All U-19 ex players who have tasted Worldcup success need to be in team - like Kohli, Rayudu, Chand, Harmeet and some other excellent players from all other states should get a run of atleast 10 ODIs each to prove their mettle. This is only way we will be able to filter out battle hardened tough players. My gut feeling tells me 2015 World cup team should be as follows (unless of course some exceptional talent suddenly crops up) - Rahane , Kohli , Chand , Rayudu (wk) , Raina, Yuvraj , IrfanPathan + 3 bowlers + Harmeet singh . Kohli to be captain and Raina and Yuvraj the main seniors (both r good in ODI) . Manoj Tewary to be reserve batter.

Its a good thing that young rayadu is selected in squad. But the question is that will he get a chance or will be a water man like Ajinkya and M.vijay.

Sachin and sehwag should be ashamed of themselves. It doesn't expected from you to play 20-22 matches and then have a ton after that and also sealed that place for next 20 matches with that single ton.

Well guys this was long time coming and it took atleast 6 long years for the selectors to decide on this where as less talented players made it to the national team. Well I am pretty sure it was not just talent which got the selectors nod but to a certain extent his association with MI and corporate influence, but anyway better late than never, it has always been the case in India, better players get a raw deal whereas some mediocre guys get more than a fair deal. Well i would rather get guys like Munaf, Kamran, even shreeshant, dinesh karthic, Kaif, Mukund, Uthappa, Suryakumar yadav, Manish pandey, Unmukt, Aparajitha and other talented guys in the scheme of things. When the rock star Jadeja and Awana can be rewarded for their ranji performance, then there are scores of others who deserve to be in on the same basis like Kaif, Badri, Karthick. I am pretty sure Shivlal Yadav will be furious, that in spite of his trying everyithing to sabotage Rayudu's career god has given him this chance

I hear all and sundry praising Rayudu and hope he delivers....but from his statistics here he is not that prolific ! Have to see him play Test Matches...where some Boys remain Boys and some become Man...

  • POSTED BY on | December 12, 2012, 1:09 GMT

When he began, he was considered the next big thing after Tendulkar. He was not patient, lost his way and landed in ICL and thereafter the resurrection began. A good example how a talent could be wasted if not groomed properly in the early stages.

  • POSTED BY on | December 11, 2012, 18:22 GMT

Its easy to score runs in domestic Indian cricket. The real test is facing Stein or Anderson or Morkel etc. That's when the real talent shows. Jadeja we hear scored a triple century. The guy was such a dismal failure when playing the big boys of International cricket.

Dhoni has his pets...apart from that rest of the team to have luck to get into 11...

Dhoni's thinking is not aggressive or defensive... he don't go out of his comfort zone...he has to pick Ashwin, Raina, Jadeja, Kohli... he believes them only...if somebody else perform...he is just happy.

He is an exceptional player, better than even Rohit, Kohli, Raina, Tiwari... As they say "God knows the truth but waits"!!!! He should have picked 8 years ago but due to some politics he was not given a chance. But its better late than never...Remember guys..Uthappa, Irfan Pathan, Dinesh Karthik, Raina, R.P.Singh, Piyush Chawla, Shikar Dhawan, all of them played under the captaincy of Rayudu... Rayudu also played along with Gambhir, Dhoni etc for India A sides... Rayudu should be included in all formats...He is a brilliant fielder too. Jonty Rhodes once said that Rayudu's fielding is like the combination of Yuvraj and Kaif...

  • POSTED BY riprock on | December 11, 2012, 14:00 GMT

Gotta watch out for this lad. Preciously talented.. For all formats. Needs to make the most of his opportunities. He could well become the Master's successor. Sachin should in all probability hang his boots after the Aus series and IPL. He may have reached an agreement with the BCCI to play through the home season and retire. considering factors like broadcasters and trp's, experience in the failing squad and a reason to bring large crowds for IPL. The three ODI's coming up against Pak could be his last 3 ODI's if picked..and the home Tests against Oz may be his last international assignment. It'll also by then be one month short of his 40th b'day. He can conveniently end his contract with the Mumbai Indians in playing one final season of IPL and charming home crowds across various cities before bidding farewell. Rayudu's inclusion right there and possibly good performances forthcoming could well begin to ease Tendulkar's reluctance on retirement and quicken his decision to quit.

Senior players have lost the drive/motivation/desire to perform consistently , so better give chance to youngster even if they loose at start in future team will be gainer.

Dhoni as a leader is no more the same Dhoni. Has become very predictbale and traditional. Though talks of youth yet do not want weed out senior players.

India now need leader like Ganguly who could unearth budding talent and gets performance from them.

Exactly, whoever joins the Squad as new ones, they have to warm up the benches, Dhoni will always go with his old XI despite win or loss. Poor strategy, and the BCCI sitting silently and watching Dhon's autocracy, I don't know what DUNCAN FLETCHER is doing, Dhoni was quoted saying that he is only an advisor for batting techniques. BCCI is slowly losing their plot and only concentrating about making money, Where this guys get time to think abt Cricket

Dhoni is indeed blocking Dinesh Karthik like how Padmakar Shivalkar/Rajendra Goel was blocked by Bedi and later the fab 4 holding players such as Badrinath,Kaif, even Yuvraj to an extent.

  • POSTED BY on | December 11, 2012, 10:11 GMT

Dhoni should be happy hearing this news.

  • POSTED BY Sukumar_Kantri on | December 11, 2012, 10:04 GMT

At last a performance based selection, well done patil & co. Rayudu has been in sidelines right from his u19 days though he was performing consistently. He can be a part time keeper too. Hope he gets chance to play atleast 5-6 t20i's. Hope he gets into other formats too. He is an absolute talent unutilized at international level. He is a captaincy material too, proving for baroda ranji squad.

  • POSTED BY on | December 11, 2012, 10:01 GMT

Rayudu deserved his place... He is Flexible depends upon the pitch condition and Match situation... He is a Big hitter when required, he is consistent too.. Suresh raina, dinesh karthick, Uthappa, Dhawan played under his captaincy in U-19... He is best captain also.. He should take place... No politics PLS.. Indian Cricket missing him already 8 yrs.. He should get a chance to prove...

  • POSTED BY on | December 11, 2012, 9:52 GMT

he is very aggressive batsman...BCCI has taken good decision........it's a good replacement...he could have to show aggressive performance in the match to get opportunities..........

  • POSTED BY Biophysicist on | December 11, 2012, 9:46 GMT

@Mariakutty: Rayudu is coming in place of Manoj Tiwary, because Tiwary is injured. I am sure Tiwary cannot field well when injured!

INDIAN SELECTORS - have always been confused by the amount of talent we have. Really today if the entire Indian test squad were replaced we could find ample talent to make a NEW, YOUNG SQUAD from the following lot of players just to give a few:- RAHANE, BISLA, MANDEEP, PUJARA, KOHLI, RAYUDU, TIWARI, SHARMA,HAND, JADEJA, PATHAN, YADAV, PANKAJ. RAINA, AWANA the list goes on To create the best squad in India we need a good professional set up. This means nly the best play the best. There is a need for a two tier system. The domestic system needs a complete overhual.

Great Selection !!! Rayadu has right approch to the game. He plays always positive circket. Lets wait and see how he can transform the game to international level. All the best Rayadu

  • POSTED BY on | December 11, 2012, 9:24 GMT

After almost 4-5 years of hard work & night mares (fight with Arjun Yadav), Rayudu got opportunity. I am very very happy to see Rayudu in the list and would be elated if he is in the final 11. He is am under rated player and Selectors are now realizing the importance of players like Rayudu.

  • POSTED BY Ranta on | December 11, 2012, 9:15 GMT

Ecstatic ! Better late then never. I hope this will be start of things to come in future. Wish him very best. Way to go.

  • POSTED BY on | December 11, 2012, 9:09 GMT

All the best Rayadu. He could be the perfect replacement for MSD, who can bat agressively and sensibly also can keep wickets. Let MSD take some break, poor guy he should be tired of all criticism.

  • POSTED BY on | December 11, 2012, 9:08 GMT

Good pick from selectors.. I guess this is the only solitary & good selection happened on performance based from indian selectors since last few years..I ll prefer to select rayudu for one days too..so that he surely cement his place in indian team in t20 and one days..all the best rayudu..

  • POSTED BY Chetan007 on | December 11, 2012, 8:59 GMT

@Edassery: Same Rayudu. He might have got his chances by 2003 but being continuously being neglected by selectors led him join ICL. Anyway wish him luck.

  • POSTED BY on | December 11, 2012, 8:58 GMT

it is good decision i'm very happy to see rayudu is in indian squad

  • POSTED BY SachinSawant16feb on | December 11, 2012, 8:57 GMT

Is Sandeep Patil turning it ON, yes very good decision by selectors, when selectors are considering (only) IPL performance since last few years even for Tests, then why not for T-20, Raydu surely a good pick as he shown his class against lights of almost all big international bowlers, also he is wonderful fielder, by seeing current form of Yuvi, dhoni and others i guess Raydu is a perfect choice in middle order (provided poor fellow shows up in final 11), ALL D BEST dude....and congrats

  • POSTED BY on | December 11, 2012, 8:56 GMT

I wish Rayudu all success in his new assignment. I am confident that he will come good.

  • POSTED BY Mariakutty on | December 11, 2012, 8:55 GMT

Another NONSENSE. Manoj Tiwari in an excellent fielder who can save 10-25 runs. India will surely pay for this blunder. Replace, Gambir,Sewag or even Dhoni for a change to bring in youngsters.

  • POSTED BY on | December 11, 2012, 8:40 GMT

He deserves a chance. One of highly underrated player.

  • POSTED BY RapidChase on | December 11, 2012, 8:40 GMT

Wow!! now I can see who is on the selection team. I think India will come back to very good cricket very soon. What a PICK. Sandeep Patil looks as good as Vengsarkar.

finally Rayudu Gets in to India TEAM " ALL THE BEST "

  • POSTED BY on | December 11, 2012, 8:35 GMT

Really good work done by selectors this time. Bad luck once again for M Tiwari .

  • POSTED BY PhaniBhaskar24 on | December 11, 2012, 8:30 GMT

Very wise decision...Rayudu has maturity, aggresiveness, technique that will do well. He should be a permenant member in this indian squad, as Pranay_Bangalore, rightly pointed out, if not for dirty politics in Hyd..he would have already shown the world what he is capable of..

  • POSTED BY RapidChase on | December 11, 2012, 8:30 GMT

I think one of the best player against spin attack. class as luxman, risty as Azar, straight sixes like Singh Siddu, Cover drive like Dravid. Tough like captain Ganguly. He has enough talent but bad luck/ICL he got bit late this call. But his failure rate is very low. Give him a chance in Test or One day he will come best. One of the best U19 team India captain like Kohli/kaif. Can play in any position. Finally he can be a match winner on his day. Few matches are enough for him to cement his place unlike rohit sharma. I can take him any day in my team. Good luck mate.

  • POSTED BY on | December 11, 2012, 8:28 GMT

I am so happy for Rayadu, he needs to be a permanent feature of the T20 format as well as the one days( if there is an opportunity). A boy with immense talent finally gets his due.

  • POSTED BY fab4_india on | December 11, 2012, 8:17 GMT

No wonders will ge be able to do, apart from carrying water on the field...wont be preferred over STAR NO HIT SHARMA....of so sorry i spelled it wrong ROHIT SHARMA...

Finally....some one who is touted as next tendulkar eight years ago, now finally gets his due. Had it not been for murky hyderabad politics, this guy would have been a permanent member of indian team long back. I cant think of any other modern cricket player who was discriminated and suffered than Rayudu at the hands of heavily biased officials .

  • POSTED BY on | December 11, 2012, 8:09 GMT

good decision by the selectors.........atlast rayudu got the chance...........

  • POSTED BY Edassery on | December 11, 2012, 8:06 GMT

I feel happy for him. When he was in best of his form, he was continuously neglected for selection else he would have played 200 ODIs for India by now. There was nobody to campaign for him where as other overrated cricketers got opportunities. That's what resulted in his ICL stint.

Not sure if it's the same Rayudu now but he's shown grit and never-say-die attitude time and again.

  • POSTED BY Cricket_Lover-SARU on | December 11, 2012, 8:01 GMT

At last common sense prevails! Much deserved man than any other player. Fantastic commitment towards his team. All the best! Some good decisions by the current selection committee. For the first time i am starting to be a fan of them!

  • POSTED BY on | December 11, 2012, 8:00 GMT

finally ambati rayudu got the chance...i wrote on my facebok this issue 3 months ago.....he deserves a chance after so many great performances. the selectors now have to start giving chances to youngsters and start building the team like australia. even look at babgladesh....they are getting every year slowly.
