Parvez Rasool, the Jammu and Kashmir allrounder, has been included in the 14-member India A squad to play the warm-up one-day match against England on January 6 in Delhi.
Another notable inclusion in the squad is fast bowler Sreesanth, who returned to competitive cricket last month after nearly a year out with injury. The side will be led by Tamil Nadu opener Abhinav Mukund, and does not have any players from the teams that qualified for the Ranji quarter-finals, which start this weekend.
Rasool has been rewarded for a strong showing with both bat and ball in J&K's otherwise disappointing run in this year's Ranji Trophy. He finished on top of both batting and bowling charts for the team with 594 runs, including two centuries, and 33 wickets.
He thanked former left-arm spinner Bishan Bedi, who is J&K's coach, for playing a big role in his development. "Bedi sir has a huge role in my success," Rasool told PTI. "Initially, I was a batsman who could bowl part-time off-breaks but it was at his [Bedi] insistence that I began to concentrate more on developing my bowling skills.
"Bedi made us realise that we are here to compete and not just to participate. Earlier, J&K players used to play for the heck of it but now we believe in ourselves. We believe that we have the talent to be among the best."
Rasool has become the first cricketer from the Jammu and Kashmir team to be selected in an Indian team to play an international side and the fourth - behind Abid Nabi, Surendra Singh and Abdul Qayoom - to be picked in a national-level squad.
Qayoom was the first J&K cricketer to play the Wills Trophy (the Irani Trophy of the ODIs) for the Wills XI in December 1990 and also played in the Deodhar Trophy in 1996-97. Surendra represented North Zone in the 2000-01 Duleep Trophy and played for India B in the 2001-02 NKP Salve Challenger Trophy.
Rasool was detained for questioning three years ago in Bangalore in connection with a suspected presence of explosives at the Chinnaswamy stadium ahead of a Champions League match. He was given a clean chit a few days later.
Other Ranji performers who were called up include Ishwar Pandey, the Madhya Pradesh seamer, who is the top-wicket taker in the tournament this season. Haryana seamer Mohit Sharma, who is fourth on the wicket-takers list, has also been included.
India A squad: Abhinav Mukund (capt), M Vijay, Robin Bist, Kedar Jadhav, Ashok Menaria, Rohit Motwani (wk), Jalaj Saxena, Akshay Darekar, Ishwar Pandey, Sreesanth, Rishi Dhawan, Paras Dogra, Mohit Sharma, Parvez Rasool

It is a great selection done by sandeep patil before england series. he could select sandeep sharma, pankaj singh, sutart binny, c gowtham also. i feel c gowtham should really fit the bill for indian test side. future for indian test side is brighter. we should use murali vijay, pujara, gowtham, mandeep singh in the test side even stuart binny could be tried along with b kumar, jalaj saxena, ishwar pandey. it is great to watch sreesanth back in the side. he along with ishant sharma, b kumar would be a tough bowling line to any team. we could also try s s sarkar and ashok dinda also meanwhile as a testing bowlers. any way it is a great selection by sandeep patil and team. parveen razool is a great selection
To selectors of India - a challenge. From the teams of 29 across the three different groups, identify a list of 2-3 best performers (who were consistent and have exceeded the expectations) to form three teams and pit them against the team selected today to represent the country. The selection of the teams (of about 15 per team) to be comprised of 6 Batsmen, 2 All-rounders, 1 WK/Batsman, 4 Pace bowlers and 2 Spin bowlers. This will provide an additional pool of 18 batsmen, 6 All-Rounders, 4 WK/Batsmen, 12 Pace bowlers and 6 Spin bowlers as the bench strength, over and above the players selected to represent the country. This pool should be considered while selecting teams to be included in India-A team tour and also nurtured with the right coaching process. The BIG QUESTION to India selectors - ARE YOU GAME FOR IT?
Its refreshing to see Indian selection committee's choice of India A squad. It might have been helped by the quarter finals of Ranji but nevertheless a good one. Rewarding Pandey, Saxena, Rassol, R Dhawan, Mohit Sharma is a positive move. This would definitely boost the consistent performers in domestic cricket in not losing hope of a chance at higher levels. The selection could've been better if a chance had been given to D Karthick or Parthiv as they are the second best wicket keepers in our country. I guess Pankaj Singh is being seen as a test bowler and hence not given a chance. Overall it looked a good team and lets hope to see more bold and purposeful selections by the committee in near future at all levels.
Happy with MP's top performer selected in squad, Ishwar & Jalaj ...reward for good performance...also good to see Sri again in good touch given a chance to show his credential against England....also missing Akshath Readdy,Senju Samson & Sandeep Sharma , M Vijay ,A Mukund what selector want to prove with their selection are they are future for India............ if they want to increase a bentch strength for Team India so search in Rassol,Dogra,Dhawan,Jalaj,Pandey,Reddy,JJ Singh,Menaria,Mandeep Singh,Unmukt Chand,Bist,Darekar,Tiwary..etc...from Under-24 or spirited performer in every international level opposition outing.
All the players selected r players from those teams who didnt qualify for ranji quarter final......i think selectors could still hav given chance to those who has good record this ranji season...like cm gautham karnataka wicket keeper who is infact highest run scorer in ranji this season... rohit motwani selection is certainly i will not agree..gujarat didnt qualify so certainly they could hav given chance to parthiv who is second highest run scorer in ranji this season...but three players selection i really liked was rasool, ishwar and sreesanth...
A thoughtfully selected team - rewarding youngsters with a chance agaist touring teams is an excellent move. Feeling very happy for Darekar, Ishwar, Jalaj, Menaria, Parvez .... Go out there boys and show how it is done ... !
Parvez rasool should be included as he came out as best all rounder in ranji ,,, he is group c player and giving him chance means trusting talent... hope he will be selected...
Posted by lonewarriorram on (January 5, 2013, 7:45 GMT)Over all a very good selection. Good job done by selectors this time. I would have more happy to see other opener in place of M Vijay. This bloke has pathetic average and strike rate in ODIs he has played even when compared to Sir R Jadeja. Hopefully these players will perform against quality english attack and push the senior team members who are riding on past performances. All the best guys prove what you are made of.
Posted by SherjilIslam on (January 5, 2013, 6:14 GMT)I would suggest selectors to include Rassool and Ishwar Pandey straightaway to the Indian squad against England as we have nothing to lose. Atleast we can can try rasool as an allrounder and pandey as pacer. Also Pandey can effectively use long handle.
Posted by sidatmums on (January 5, 2013, 6:11 GMT)Good job done by sandeep patil and co.They had given a chance for some consistent performers in the first class level. Selecting sreesanth is a very good decision considering the all important southafrica tour later this year. Its nice to see rishi dhawan in the team, who has been brilliant with both bat and ball this season. He has the ability to be a very good fast bowling allrounder for india if nurtured properly. Our spin bowling bench is looking very pale and the inclusion of parveez rasool gives some hope. Abhinav mukund, sreesanth, rishi dhawan, ishwar pandey, parveez rassol and paras dogra are the players to watch out for. GO INDIA
