Parvez Rasool, the Jammu and Kashmir allrounder, has been included in the 14-member India A squad to play the warm-up one-day match against England on January 6 in Delhi.

Another notable inclusion in the squad is fast bowler Sreesanth, who returned to competitive cricket last month after nearly a year out with injury. The side will be led by Tamil Nadu opener Abhinav Mukund, and does not have any players from the teams that qualified for the Ranji quarter-finals, which start this weekend.

Rasool has been rewarded for a strong showing with both bat and ball in J&K's otherwise disappointing run in this year's Ranji Trophy. He finished on top of both batting and bowling charts for the team with 594 runs, including two centuries, and 33 wickets.

He thanked former left-arm spinner Bishan Bedi, who is J&K's coach, for playing a big role in his development. "Bedi sir has a huge role in my success," Rasool told PTI. "Initially, I was a batsman who could bowl part-time off-breaks but it was at his [Bedi] insistence that I began to concentrate more on developing my bowling skills.

"Bedi made us realise that we are here to compete and not just to participate. Earlier, J&K players used to play for the heck of it but now we believe in ourselves. We believe that we have the talent to be among the best."

Rasool has become the first cricketer from the Jammu and Kashmir team to be selected in an Indian team to play an international side and the fourth - behind Abid Nabi, Surendra Singh and Abdul Qayoom - to be picked in a national-level squad.

Qayoom was the first J&K cricketer to play the Wills Trophy (the Irani Trophy of the ODIs) for the Wills XI in December 1990 and also played in the Deodhar Trophy in 1996-97. Surendra represented North Zone in the 2000-01 Duleep Trophy and played for India B in the 2001-02 NKP Salve Challenger Trophy.

Rasool was detained for questioning three years ago in Bangalore in connection with a suspected presence of explosives at the Chinnaswamy stadium ahead of a Champions League match. He was given a clean chit a few days later.

Other Ranji performers who were called up include Ishwar Pandey, the Madhya Pradesh seamer, who is the top-wicket taker in the tournament this season. Haryana seamer Mohit Sharma, who is fourth on the wicket-takers list, has also been included.

India A squad: Abhinav Mukund (capt), M Vijay, Robin Bist, Kedar Jadhav, Ashok Menaria, Rohit Motwani (wk), Jalaj Saxena, Akshay Darekar, Ishwar Pandey, Sreesanth, Rishi Dhawan, Paras Dogra, Mohit Sharma, Parvez Rasool

Parvez rasool should be included as he came out as best all rounder in ranji ,,, he is group c player and giving him chance means trusting talent... hope he will be selected...

Posted by lonewarriorram on (January 5, 2013, 7:45 GMT)

Over all a very good selection. Good job done by selectors this time. I would have more happy to see other opener in place of M Vijay. This bloke has pathetic average and strike rate in ODIs he has played even when compared to Sir R Jadeja. Hopefully these players will perform against quality english attack and push the senior team members who are riding on past performances. All the best guys prove what you are made of.

Posted by SherjilIslam on (January 5, 2013, 6:14 GMT)

I would suggest selectors to include Rassool and Ishwar Pandey straightaway to the Indian squad against England as we have nothing to lose. Atleast we can can try rasool as an allrounder and pandey as pacer. Also Pandey can effectively use long handle.

Posted by sidatmums on (January 5, 2013, 6:11 GMT)

Good job done by sandeep patil and co.They had given a chance for some consistent performers in the first class level. Selecting sreesanth is a very good decision considering the all important southafrica tour later this year. Its nice to see rishi dhawan in the team, who has been brilliant with both bat and ball this season. He has the ability to be a very good fast bowling allrounder for india if nurtured properly. Our spin bowling bench is looking very pale and the inclusion of parveez rasool gives some hope. Abhinav mukund, sreesanth, rishi dhawan, ishwar pandey, parveez rassol and paras dogra are the players to watch out for. GO INDIA

Posted by   on (January 5, 2013, 6:02 GMT)

After the failure of india's best players, we now demanding for inclusion of second string of players. If it happens, it may sink us further. mindless emotion!. :-(

Posted by   on (January 5, 2013, 3:49 GMT)

Players like Munaf Patel, Yousuf Pathan, Robin Uthappa, Murali Vijay and R.P.Singh are often forgotten by selectors. These are potential world class players. Why Rohit Sharma was still included in the team?. Enough for him. Robin Uthappa an attacking batsman in the calibre of Sandeep Patil. Yousuf Pathan a game changer in limited overs must be included in the team.

Posted by spinkingKK on (January 4, 2013, 23:02 GMT)

Murali Vijay is an excellent batsman and a very good fielder. I just don't know why India don't play him often in ODI's. Even in tests, he will make a good opener. Good luck to him in this match. Hopefully, he can make a big century and cement his place in the Indian team.

Posted by rosh280 on (January 4, 2013, 16:22 GMT)

It is high time we need to concentrate on young players who can really push india forward rather than trying some players. To keep some performance in the test, we have to use Murali vijay, Cheteswar pujara, Mandeep singh,C gowtham, Dinesh karthik,Stuart binny all play big innings that is really required at test level. They are really matured enough to play best innings. Ashwin and bhuvanesh kumar are the great alrounders who can score big scores at the time of requirement. It is a great sign that ishant sharma is back with his form. We should find one more fast bowler who can really support ishant sharma and bhuvanesh kumar. Ishwar pandey, pankaj singh, parvez rasool and vikas sharma can really fill that vaccum. In one day Murali vijay,Pujara, mandeep singh, sarul kanwar are the consistent players they should get opportunity with bhuvanesh kumar and jalaj saxena.

what about players like Kaif, solid as wood, according to John Wright, not glamorous like Yuvraj, but much more value for money....

Posted by Arrow011 on (January 4, 2013, 7:29 GMT)

If Uttarakhand gets a Ranji team like Chattisgarh & Jharkhand it would fill atleast half of Indian team with brave players. Uttarakhand already has produced great player like MS Dhoni, then has given good players to other teams Manish Pandey (plays for Karnataka), Robin Bist ( Plays for Rajasthan), Pawan Negi & Unmukt Chand (Plays for Delhi). This shows the quality of players coming out of the hill state, but due to unfortunate politics the brave state has no Ranji team. J&K has cricket team but not more talented Uttarakhand.

Good selection execpt some points Mukund and Vijay was ordinary in this season but can select Dinesh Karthic then Ashish Reddy is the notable omission for me and as a youngster Unmukth Chand should have been there

Posted by   on (January 3, 2013, 21:45 GMT)

Selecting a good India A team is only half job done, but it's important to give the performers an international cap as well. For example Bhuvaneshwar Kumar was exceptional in the India A tour of the Caribbean but he only got a chance when luckily for him Irfan Pathan, Sreesanth, Varun Aaron, Umesh Yadav & RP Singh got injured!

Posted by   on (January 3, 2013, 18:01 GMT)

I don't understand why anybody needs to select 15 men squad for a warm-up game. Being a selector, one should select the second best 12 players in the country for a warm game.

Posted by passion4indiancric on (January 3, 2013, 17:16 GMT)

I thought CM Gautham and Mithun played very well in the Ranji apart from KL Rahul. Bowlers from Vidharba have bowled well. Why do we see Murali Vijay and Abhinav Mukund in most teams and they have been given enough chances. Mukund has grabbed it though, Murali Vijay seems a showman who had a dream run with NO RESULTS courtesy - Srikanth.Let us have a good breed of fast bowlers and show the world that we do have talent. Sreesanth is over the hill and the most consistently INCONSISTENT bowler we have.

Posted by   on (January 3, 2013, 14:34 GMT)

On what basis Sreesanth is in the team? His recent Ranji records is poor.. why selectors r doing this mistakes again and again stick on the old products

Posted by   on (January 3, 2013, 10:54 GMT)

Asish reddy from hyd should have been selected exceptionally in odi form

Posted by sony_sr on (January 3, 2013, 6:28 GMT)

Good selection considering ranji knock out selected team players and delhi players were not considered. being from kerala i feel sandeep warior and jagdheesh could have been selected. but still you can pick only 14 players. i hope those 2 will get chances in future considering they are really talented.

Posted by passionsoflife on (January 3, 2013, 5:26 GMT)

Teams based on Ranji performances in the league phase (takes into account absolute and relative performance; Ravi Jadeja is excluded as he is already in the test team): A team: 1.Jiwanjot Singh 2.Parthiv Patel 3.Yashpal Singh 4.Saurav Tiwary 5.Murali Gautam 6.Abhishek Nayar 7.Parvez Rassol 8.Rishi Dhawan 9.Bhuvneshwar Kumar 10.Shahbaz Nadeem 11.Ishwar Pandey B team: 1. Most of the players selected in india A nw will nt b even selected in the zone team for duleep trophy. Nw they hv bn selected bcoz 8 teams hv qualified for knockouts nd delhi players are nt selected bcoz they r playing 1 day match on 8th against england.....nd above all selectors dnt want eng team to hv practise with better players........

Posted by   on (January 3, 2013, 0:19 GMT)

Going back to Murali Vijay & Sreesanth? What madness. At this rate, Sandeep Patil should select himself and Vishwanath for a comeback, along with Suru Nayak, Kersan Ghavri and Munaf Patel all over again.

The likes of S.DHAWAN,U.CHAND AND P,AWANA are going to play england in the second warm up match

Posted by Dandy_s on (January 2, 2013, 18:58 GMT)

All my friends writing here please remember that they have not picked any players from the teams which have qualified for ranji knockouts and also from delhi ...so kindly keep that into mind while posting your comments

Posted by   on (January 2, 2013, 18:54 GMT)

agree with this selection but he needs to get chance i am sure he can prove he is better than others

Posted by Bathinda11 on (January 2, 2013, 18:10 GMT)

This is really a questionable team selection..The performers are there, but some prospects are still missing...Sandeep Sharma, Pankaj Singh shuld be there...specially pankaj..he is a great prospect for India, specially when India is looking for pacers... another person missing is Stuary Binny..he has been so consistent in scoring and picking wickets. he is one genuine allrounder india needs. Other key names include Jiwanjot Singh, C Gautam..the stars of their teams ! I hope selectors shud take care of the fact that now Team India is on the verge when we need a pool of players whom team could fall on anytime!!

Posted by   on (January 2, 2013, 17:39 GMT)

Looking forward to Pandey's and Sharma's performances. Would've loved to see Basant Mohanty in too. Good luck guys !

Posted by   on (January 2, 2013, 17:35 GMT)

Why dont they start looking for allrounders and fast bowlers we have plenty of batsmen, give them a chance and see how they do who cares if India A wins or loses. Abhishek Nayyar Stuart Binny Aparajith Pankaj Singh Sandeep Sharma

Posted by vamshiparuchuri on (January 2, 2013, 17:32 GMT)

Ridiculous selection ... where is future players.. why M.Vijay& A mukund... Unmukt, Gautam, Jeevanjot Singh, Pujara, Rayudu... include future players start building good team who can play in Australian conditions in WC 2015

Posted by Ganchu on (January 2, 2013, 17:20 GMT)

I dont know what else karnataka players have to do to get selected otherwise nobody can ignore the performance of Gautham and Binny.Ithink binny is ignored only because his father is a selector

Posted by bvnathan on (January 2, 2013, 16:39 GMT)

A very BOLD MOVE by the Indian Selectors and a great start to NEW YEAR 2013. It is great to identify star performers from the team not qualified for the Ranji QFs and encouraging them to showcase their skills. Parthiv Patel is one player who missed the boat in spite of his consistent performance as WK/Batsman and skipper of Gujarat team. For the bench strength I would like to add potential three U-19 world cup team members in Unmukt Chand, Sandeep Sharma and B Aparajith.

Posted by ToTellUTheTruth on (January 2, 2013, 16:15 GMT)

Nice to see J&K players being picked. But please do give them a chance in a playing XI so that encourages more. We do need our Kashmiri fast bowlers. Wonder whatever happened to Abu Nabi. I was excited when I saw him live.

Posted by We_Win_All on (January 2, 2013, 15:36 GMT)

May be selectors didn't want to pick players from qualified teams.... Nothing else explains the exclusion of players like Gautham, Binny, H.Shah, Rayudu, etc... But Pankaj Singh's exclusion is inexplicable...

Posted by mukesh_LOVE.cricket on (January 2, 2013, 15:34 GMT)

Sreesanth has to play tests and first class matches , he is a genuine wicket taker but not suitable for ODI , these limited over matches is only going to throw him off his rhythm , in same manner our selectors are blundering by making rohit sharma play in ODI and T20s whereas he is actually suited for Test where he will have the time to settle build his innings. and good luck to other new guys ..

Posted by   on (January 2, 2013, 15:18 GMT)

waiting for a Kashmiri to wear the blue uniform... it should have been Samiullah Beigh ! Lets wait for Parvez to open eyes of India that if they want a fast bowler it has to be from Kashmir ! inshaAllah

Posted by Dandy_s on (January 2, 2013, 15:02 GMT)

Ok Guys regarding dhawan and chand i think they might not have been picked because after playing India A the english team will play against Delhi so i think thats why nobody from delhi has been picked up for India A

Posted by Dandy_s on (January 2, 2013, 14:52 GMT)

Instead of Mukund and Vijay if Hyderabad's Akash Reddy and Shikhir Dhawan shld have been given the chance and also Shreesanth is just back from long injury lay off and havent had much match practice would have loved to see kerala's CP Shahid given a chance that lad is 28 now but he is a fine left arm pacer .

Other then that i think the team selection is pretty good.

Posted by atuljain1969 on (January 2, 2013, 14:38 GMT)

I am happy with inclusion of RISHI DHAWAN and ISHWAR PANDEY, however they should be persist with, to check that they have real potential.

Hard to know that Sandeep Sharma, has missed out, He is performing well for Punjab this season. As for Sreesanth, he is kind of a bowler if fully fit, need to play for country right away.

@cricket4every - "nd partiv is nt given chance bcoz of old age ..."

Was this meant to be a joke? FYI - he is only 27 years, and NOT 37 ...

Posted by RathishCochin on (January 2, 2013, 14:14 GMT)

Its not Senju Samson, its 'Sanju Samson'...http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/player/425943.html. He is a good talented young cricketer from Kerala... He score 2 century's from 5 matches in this season. And yesterday a heroic 51 from 36 balls in a fourth day pitch...

Posted by   on (January 2, 2013, 13:39 GMT)

I don't think there are many players left who could've warranted a place with their performance in Ranji, given that players from teams that have made it to the knock outs were not considered.. A case could be made for players like Parthiv Patel, Juneja, Saha, Jagadeesh.. Infact , instead of Abhinav Mukund and Vijay, it would've been better to have had Patel and Jagadeesh to open, since they both had some productive outings in the last few rounds..

If all the teams were considered, My pick would've been Jiwanjot/Jagadeesh , Shikhar Dhawan, Pujara, Rayudu, Mandeep, Nayar, Parthiv/CM Gautam, Ali Murtaza/Shahid/rassol, I Pandey, Sandeep Sharma, R Dhawan

This 15+ 2 more fast bowlers would be the team i would want to sent for a couple of A tours to England, South Africa, and Australia before the national team tours these countries..

Posted by cricket4every on (January 2, 2013, 13:28 GMT)

@vatsal it is true that players selected are from those teams, who didnt qualify for the knock outs.....nd partiv is nt given chance bcoz of old age....nw india hs to try new talents.....

Mulkund and Vijay are only good at Domestic level, they have perform poorly in India-A tours or with Indian Team. They should Have given chance to Chand and Chopra u-19 opening pair.

Good 2 c selectors giving domestic performers a go... Nice 2 c Ishwar Pandey and Robin Bist - who has had very good ranji seasons last year and b4 that. Ambati Rayudu deserved a place and so did Chand...

Posted by   on (January 2, 2013, 12:40 GMT)

Punjab"s Sandeep sharma should have been given a chance. He was the top performer for the last under 19 World Cup.

Rayudu should have been picked for the warm up match...

Posted by   on (January 2, 2013, 11:49 GMT)

Its sad that Sandeep Warrier, who is the top wicket taking fast bowler from Kerala is not given a chance. He is one of the top fast bowlers in India but seems not that lucky though.

Posted by KhemrajThakur on (January 2, 2013, 11:45 GMT)

Its nice to see two player from Himachal Pradesh Rishi Dhawan and Paras Dogra get selected in this team. Both had played brilliant cricket during this Ranji Season. Specially, Rishi whom I had seen working hard in nets when he was 16 at Paddal stadium (HP).He seems a geniun alrounder with 35 wickets and almost 500 runs with three centurys in this Season. I wish best of luck to him and hope he will make most of this oppurtunity.

Posted by prabha_cricfan on (January 2, 2013, 11:31 GMT)

I would have loved to see Unmukt chand & Baba Aparjith in this team. We should use chances like these to through the challenge to these youngsters ans how they respond to the situation.

Arup Das 26 wickets, Abu Nechim 22 wickets this season for Assam. I wonder if their name came into consideration ... should have tried someone else in place of Vijay & Mukund as they are already established names.

Posted by vatsal.goshaliya on (January 2, 2013, 11:12 GMT)

All the players selected r players from those teams who didnt qualify for ranji quarter final...... b'coz on 6th january ( date of match india a vs england xi) they played their ranji match. b'coz that was knockout so that match was important. otherwise many players are remaining. like - pujara, jiwanjot, jadeja, sandeep sharma, rayudu. and many more....

Posted by TATTUs on (January 2, 2013, 10:46 GMT)

Isnt it interesting that no wicket keeper with good performance is being picked? Parthiv Patel, C Goutham, Dinesh Karthik, and young Senju Samson from Kerala.

Posted by   on (January 2, 2013, 9:58 GMT)

Sreesanth deserves this selection. We need guys like hime with bold attitude. What he did wrong ? If somebody form other countries like Australia,South Arfica can show their attitude why an Indian can do that in replay.?

Dear All - before posting comments, please note that players from teams who have qualified for knowck out have not been included. And then this being India, with a huge population, naturally we do have a huge talent pool. Rather questioning why a certain XYZ is not in team, please look and evaluate if the selected is a desrving candidate or not, whether he has the talent, capacity nd will to succeed ..... I think the selcted team for this one match is a big incentive for all domestic performers .....

Posted by   on (January 2, 2013, 9:51 GMT)

Can anyone tell me on what basis "M VIJAY" is there in the squad.....he has done nothing in this Ranji.....same is with Mukund also, but atleast he is young, & can improve ....IMO Vijay & Menaria has done nothing to be selected for A tours...Aksath Reddy (Hyd) & Jiwanjot Singh (Punjab) should have got selected....good to see Mohit Sharma & Ishwar Pandey as the fast bowling options....Best of Luck to them

Posted by   on (January 2, 2013, 9:43 GMT)

Best of Luck for Ishwar Pandey.

Posted by Dandy_s on (January 2, 2013, 9:41 GMT)

I would say that although its good to see youngsters like Rasool, Dhawan, Pandey rewarded for there hard work but the selection process of BCCI has failed again. Why is Vijay and Mukund in the team is totally out of my understanding. There are many other youngsters who have done much better this season as long as this tradition of selecting players on the basis of past performances and on the basis of the zone of there residence continues india will never realise there full potential.

Its just sad to see BCCI ruining the sport

Posted by Sarobar on (January 2, 2013, 9:26 GMT)

@Sakthi Murthy: Manish Pandey, Mandeep Singh, Cheteshwar Pujara and Sandeep Sharma are going to play Ranji Trophy for their respective states, so they are not available. Harmeet Singh doesn't fit into Mumbai XI so it is yet to be seen whether he can perform at senior level. Though i agree Unmukt Chand & Baba Aparajith deserved a chance more than Murli Vijay or Ashok Menarea. And if Sreeanth was brought just 4 matches after injury without any notable performance this would have been a nice platform to test out young Harmeeet Singh. As for Manish Pandey he has not featured in Kartaka's last 2 rounds of Ranji matches; I am not sure whether he is injured or out of form.

Posted by   on (January 2, 2013, 9:26 GMT)

Sreesanth is a waste of a place With a poor attitude and track record his place should have been given to an aspiring pacer like Shami Ahmed who hasnt found a place in the main India XI Why Rohit Motwani has been selected over C M Gautam is a mystery What has Motwani done better than Gautam ? Gautam helped his captain take his team into the QF Motwani got his team relegated and Kedar Jadhav showed little of his promise Finally its clear which hidden Chennai hand pushes the selectors to repeatedly to include Vijay and Mukund and keep Shikar Dhawan out The choice of the spinners is again strange Who are these guys who are better than Iqbal Abdulla ? And if you think some of the pace aspirants apart from Sreesanth are future Indian prospects I will die laughing

Posted by   on (January 2, 2013, 9:19 GMT)

What about Manish Pandey, Mandeep Singh, Pujara, Harmeet Singh, U.Chand, Baba Aparajith, Sandeep Sharma. When and where they will get chance.

No Karnataka Player is included in INDIA 'A' team. Muralidharan Gautham is leading scorer of Ranji Season 2012-13 and also a wicket keeper. I don't think on what basis M. Vijay is included in this team. Please stop choosing their own players select talented players. Stop Rohit Sharma, Gambhir, Sehwag use Pujara, Manoj Tiwary etc

Posted by dakshinap on (January 2, 2013, 9:14 GMT)

Why the seletors did'nt select the young talanted Manpreet Juneja?. He tooks lots of runs in this on going ranji troupy along with 3 hundreds. His first class averge is more than 74. Any way, the selection of Parvez Rassol and Iswar Pandey is good sign.

Posted by Procter on (January 2, 2013, 8:59 GMT)

Remember this India A is selected from teams which are not in Ranji Quarterfinals which starts also on Jan 6 for obvious reasons. So stop cribbing about non inclusion of players from qualified teams.

Rishi Dhawan. I have no idea how he was ignored for the ODI/T20 happening now. He is on par if not better than Bhuv Kumar. But its great to see him in the India A. If there is a future pace bowling all rounderin the Indian tea, it is him.

Posted by baghels.a on (January 2, 2013, 8:38 GMT)

First of all logic of selecting players for 50 over based on Ranji performance is beyond me, but i guess we domestically play so little 50 overcricket that selectors didn't have an option, would have liked to have seen Unmukt Chand since Delhi is not in the knockouts any more, Chand didn't set the domestic scene on fire but was definetely no worse than the likes of Vijay,Mukund,Bisht,Menaria who scored as many runs as him. People before they start complaining about certain names not being there remember those players are involved in the knockouts.....

@KishorKumar25: CM Gautam was not selected because he has a ranji QF match from 6th

Again zonal quota in play. Where is Sandeep Sharma? What about Gautam? I am happy for Rassol though.

Rishi Dhawan. I have no idea how he was ignored for the ODI/T20 happening now. He is on par if not better than Bhuv Kumar. But its great to see him in the India A. If there is a future pace bowling all rounderin the Indian tea, it is him.

Disappointed at not seeing two of the finest young batsmen - Manprit Juneja and Ankit Bawne - not getting a chance yet again. Menaria and Dogra!!? Seriously? Have you seen their batting technique? Dogra might score heavily at domestic level but he is pathetic at the big stage..

Mukund and Murali Vijay.... give us a break.. if not to them .... tried and tested... and that too for a one day warmer ???

Why Rohit Motwani ???? Why not C M Gautam, better wiket keeper batsman by far

Good team. Nice to see new faces away from the tried and test ones. Am the first person to comment on this!

Other than the TN duo, this team seams to actually be selected on the basis of performance rather than name value. Therefore, kudos to the selectors. If only the senior team's selection were held along the same lines.

wow.. good to hear this.. probably first from kashmir..that too from Bijbehara. I am sure this small town is capable of producing many more players like Parvez.
