England tour of India, 1st T20I: India v England at Pune, Dec 20, 2012
India won by 5 wickets (with 13 balls remaining)
20 December 2012 - night match (20-over match)

Time for the off then...Alex Hales and Michael Lumb opening the innings and Ashoke Dinda with the new ball...

6.50pm Jade Dernbach is in need of a big game for me. He took a bit of a spanking in the Super Eights of the World T20 and as variety-filled one-day specialist, needs to prove himself again. Think back to the UAE and he was England's matchwinner, especially in that decisive third rubber...

And for India, Gautam Gambhir needs to prove his worth. A long struggle in the Test arena, albeit with brief glimpses of form against England, but his T20 record isn't sparkling and he'll feel under pressure...

6.45pm "Have and go and see what happens" is the assessment of a few British pundits - I don't reckon they're giving England much of a chance today. And to be fair, the Indian line up is far superior on paper. But of course, sport ain't played on paper! Unless you manufactured a chess board out of paper. Is chess a sport?

6.35pm Here is the England team: 1 Alex Hales, 2 Michael Lumb, 3 Luke Wright, 4 Eoin Morgan (capt), 5 Samit Patel, 6 Jos Buttler (wk), 7 Tim Bresnan, 8 James Tredwell, 9 Stuart Meaker, 10 Danny Briggs, 11 Jade Dernbach

Buttler keeping in an international game for the first time. Two specialist spinners as Briggs plays. Debut for Meaker. Very interesting decision about Bairstow; missed Test selection now out of the T20 side.

Here's India: 1 Gautam Gambhir, 2 Ajinkya Rahane, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 Suresh Raina, 6 MS Dhoni (capt), 7 R Ashwin, 8 Ravindra Jadeja, 9 Piyush Chawla, 10 Ashok Dinda, 11 Parwinder Awana

6.30pm India have won the toss and will bowl first. MS Dhoni not sure about the impact the dew will have. He hopes the fresh legs in the team will help the fielders. He can't get much worse to be honest.

Eoin Morgan says he would have bowled, too. However, he doesn't think things will change much over three hours. "A lot of the guys have been here training so will be used to conditions," he says. Suggestion that Jonny Bairstow doesn't play. Will confirm shortly. That would mean Buttler to keep. Interesting.

6.15pm Hello everyone and welcome to our coverage of the first Twenty20 from Pune. The dust has barely settled on the Test series, but international cricket never stands still. Both teams will have some new faces, although it's England who are the most changed side - led by Eoin Morgan - and it almost has the look of a second XI. However, a good chance for the youngsters. Some early news from the ground is that James Tredwell, the offspinner, will make his T20 debut and was given his cap by Mushtaq Ahmed. Appeared to be the only cap handed out, so that means no game for James Harris or Joe Root. We'll have the other team and toss news shortly.

Dinda to Lumb, no run, length ball outside off stump, good lick, 87 mph, left alone outside off, like the Test series has never ended

Dinda to Lumb, 1 leg bye, movement into the left-hander there, strikes the thigh pad and runs wide of slip to get the innings underway

Dinda to Hales, no run, length outside off, pushed without moving the feet into the covers

Dinda to Hales, no run, full of length just outside off stump, pushed towards point

Dinda to Hales, FOUR, back of a length and quickly into position to pull to the square leg rope, timed very well

Dinda to Hales, FOUR, touch fuller but still short enough to swing away to the midwicket fence this time, another good strike

Couple of boundaries makes it a good start for England...

End of over 1 (9 runs) England 9/0 (RR: 9.00)

    • AD Hales 8 (4b 2x4)
    • MJ Lumb 0 (2b)
    • AB Dinda 1-0-8-0

Now R Ashwin...

    • AD Hales 8 (4b 2x4)
    • R Ashwin 1-1-0-0

Immediate change, Awana for Dinda...

Awana to Hales, 2 runs, back of a length and pulled, this races away, well saved on the wide long on fence, the umpire has signalled for the third umpire because Lumb was very lazy stepping back into his ground, nearly costly but just back

Awana to Hales, FOUR, beauty, down the wicket and driven in the air over extra cover, the timing was A1, that is smashed away

Awana to Hales, no run, tighter line, blocked on the crease

Awana to Hales, FOUR, too straight now though and it's flicked to the long leg boundary with the fielder up in the circle there

Awana to Hales, 1 run, better, length on off stump, driven into the covers for a sharp single

Awana to Lumb, 1 run, Lumb tries to come down the wicket now, ends up having a bit of a thrash at it and gets a bottom edge towards square leg

Another healthy over of pace for England, I don't think we'll see too much more quick stuff...

End of over 3 (12 runs) England 21/0 (RR: 7.00)

    • MJ Lumb 1 (9b)
    • AD Hales 19 (9b 4x4)
    • P Awana 1-0-12-0
    • R Ashwin 1-1-0-0

Ashwin to Lumb, OUT, swept at, missed, strikes the pad and given out lbw it looked pretty adjacent to off stump, he was a reasonable way down with a good stride so maybe it might have gone down with the angle but with a bit of grip it probably would have hit the stumps, a fair enough decision

MJ Lumb lbw b Ashwin 1 (15m 10b 0x4 0x6) SR: 10.00

Slip and a leg slip...

Ashwin to Wright, 1 run, length, tucked towards square leg

Ashwin to Hales, 1 run, back in the crease and pushed through midwicket to one of two deep fielders out on the leg side

Ashwin to Wright, 2 runs, deep square leg involved again as this is flicked from middle and leg over the infield

End of over 4 (6 runs) England 27/1 (RR: 6.75)

    • LJ Wright 5 (4b)
    • AD Hales 20 (10b 4x4)
    • R Ashwin 2-1-6-1
    • P Awana 1-0-12-0

As suggested, spin from both ends now as Jadeja comes into the attack...

Jadeja to Hales, no run, step away and slapping a length ball to cover

Both men out on the leg side again...

Jadeja to Hales, SIX, no-one in the stands though, lovely stroke this, couple of steps down and a gorgeous strike through the line, timing was excellent

Jadeja to Hales, FOUR, and again, swept from off stump, this races to the backward square rope

Jadeja to Hales, no run, now just carefully plays up on the off side coming forward

Jadeja to Hales, no run, just outside off, cracked to extra cover

Jadeja to Hales, 1 wide, well outside off, too wide and left

Jadeja to Hales, 1 run, again a forward press into the covers, this time they take on the fielder and get a run

End of over 5 (12 runs) England 39/1 (RR: 7.80)

    • AD Hales 31 (16b 5x4 1x6)
    • LJ Wright 5 (4b)
    • RA Jadeja 1-0-12-0
    • R Ashwin 2-1-6-1

Ashwin to Hales, 1 run, a delay before releasing on a length to off stump, clipped through midwicket

Ashwin to Hales, no run, full of length, just clipped back to the bowler

Ashwin to Hales, SIX, full length again, another clean strike down the ground, sails into the crowd

Certainly a pitch to hit through the line...long on goes back...

Ashwin to Hales, FOUR, full toss outside off, four more, cracked through cover, poor ball

Ashwin to Hales, no run, this is a leg break, bizarre, leg stump and Hales gets it to short long leg

A good Powerplay for England...

End of over 6 (12 runs) England 51/1 (RR: 8.50)

    • AD Hales 42 (21b 6x4 2x6)
    • LJ Wright 6 (5b)
    • R Ashwin 3-1-18-1
    • RA Jadeja 1-0-12-0

Now with the field out and spinners on it could be more difficult...Chawla into the attack...

Chawla to Wright, 2 runs, back of a length, cut past extra cover, a good bit of work on the cover rope sliding around

Still a slip in place...

Chawla to Wright, no run, goes to cut and misses outside off, skidded on

Chawla to Wright, FOUR, same ball but this time Wright plays with soft hands and dabs it behind square

Slip back into the ring...

Chawla to Wright, FOUR, another cut and beats the chase of deep cover, another excellent stroke

Chawla to Wright, 1 run, much better delivery, no width and forces Wright to flick to the heavily-protected leg side, deep midwicket fields

Chawla to Hales, FOUR, short and wide again, and again crashed to the point fence

Dreadful bowling, all those leg side fielders and he bowls wide of off stump...

End of over 7 (15 runs) England 66/1 (RR: 9.42)

    • AD Hales 46 (22b 7x4 2x6)
    • LJ Wright 17 (10b 2x4)
    • PP Chawla 1-0-15-0
    • R Ashwin 3-1-18-1

Here's something...Virat Kohli is going to wobble a few down...

Kohli to Wright, 1 run, length ball on off stump - already better than Chawla - pushed into the covers

Kohli to Hales, 1 run, wide again now and cut straight to point, never a single there but they go for the run, a direct hit and Hales is going, he missed but Kohli surely had chance to get behind the stumps, which he failed to do

Kohli to Wright, 1 run, full toss outside off, spooned over cover

Kohli to Hales, 1 run, off stump, soft hands towards extra cover

Kohli to Wright, SIX, full of length just outside off, Wright clears the front leg and slaps it down the ground, gets enough of it over the rope

Kohli to Wright, no run, full on off stump and pushed back up the wicket

Kohli giving it plenty of lip, Wright reminds him of the score in the Test series...

End of over 8 (10 runs) England 76/1 (RR: 9.50)

    • LJ Wright 25 (14b 2x4 1x6)
    • AD Hales 48 (24b 7x4 2x6)

Seven bowlers in nine overs for India so far...back to pace with Dinda...

Dinda to Hales, 1 run, good yoker, bit of pace this lad, blocked through cover

Dinda to Wright, no run, short of a length, goes to pull and it skids on quickly, bottom edge back towards the bowler

Dinda to Wright, 2 runs, another good yorker, this is dug out past short long leg and deep backward square has to come around

Dinda to Wright, FOUR, short again but this time the pull stroke connects and gets it over midwicket and long on can't cut it off

Dinda to Wright, 1 run, full now and slapped hard down to long off

Dinda to Hales, no run, full ball dug back to the bowler who throws down the striker's end stumps but Hales was back in time

Good progress from England, here's Monty...

    • Yuvraj Singh 1-0-5-0

Hello all. England's Ice Cream Boys going well ... Or maybe not

Yuvraj Singh to Wright, OUT, floated up and heaved down the ground, didn't get to the pitch and that will be safely pouched at long-off! Wright skipped out and tried to belabour Yuvraj over the fence, came off the toe of the bat and he knew that was going to the fielder as soon as he hit it

Yuvraj Singh to Hales, OUT, slides on, Hales plays slightly the wrong line and is bowled! Double strike from Yuvraj, this didn't turn much, Hales advanced for a big ole blow down the ground and effectively played around it to lose middle pole
