England in India ODI Series - 5th ODI

India v England

England won by 7 wickets (with 16 balls remaining)

Gambhir and Rohit Sharma down in the middle. Steven Finn to start. Two slips in place. Finn runs all the way to the crease and the umpire stops him, there is still a minute to start. 20000 spectators creating some noise.

Deep: "I m Not Against Pujara In Indian ODI Team...But Tell Me Honestly, Doesnt India Need A Test Specialist Like Dravid And Laxman ? Indian ODI Team Doesnt Look In Worrying Condition...But Test Team Certainly Is.... So Even If Someone Wants To Be Pujara A "Test Specialist"...I've Gotta Feeling Thats Gonna Be Blessing In Disguise....Remember Folks..It's Test Cricket That Makes You A "Legend" " Deep, but you remember this guy, Dravid, he made more than 10000 runs in ODIs too.

AB: "Was that Deep a name or Deep in terms of you know (philosophising) ;)"

Sanju : "I know CA is getting a lot of slack for their rotation policy, but if there is one thing they do correctly its to have just 12 men in the squad for any particular game with a 13th man as cover if necessary. this allows the rest of the squad to play in domestic games as necessary. India needing such a large squad for a HOME match is simply bewildering."

"The rationale behind Pujara not being picked for this particular match is understandable. He cannot be judged by this one performance whether he does well or not. Makes better sense to give Gambhir one last chance before deciding to drop," says Aswin. I wonder if Gambhir gets some runs here, would that solve problems or create newer ones...

"Based on Raina's comments that there would be a new line-up, I stayed up all night just to appease my curiosity. This cat is now killed and off to sleep," says Akshat. Akshat, I am not sure how seriously Raina is to be taken with things he says these days.

Toss: England have won the toss and they will bowl first. "Amazing place to be," says Alastair Cook. Only one change for England - Chris Woakes gets a game; Jade Dernbach sits out. India, surprisingly, are going with the same XI. No game for Pujara!

Well, surprises here. Tim Bresnan gets another game, so no Meaker. And for India, Pujara's wait continues.

His domestic team got bowled out cheaply in Mumbai; They would have loved the services of their key batsman. But with international cricket around, availability is always an issue. But Pujara is not playing in Dharamsala, he is not playing in Mumbai, he is not playing at all. What a waste. Sanjay Manjrekar is visibly upset by India's decision to leave Pujara out.

"Rubbing my eyes. Still no game for Pujara? Are they trying to mould him into a test specialist?" Kay, you are not the only one here.

Nakul: "Pujara might as well have played for Saurashtra to get some match practice ahead of the Aus tour instead of warming the bench in the indian dressing room, bewildering!"

Senthil: "More than pujara not playing I am more surprised that tim Bresnan is playing. Selectors didn't pick him for NZ series. What point is Cook trying to convey?"

Allen: "I don't understand the logic of the current selection... I don't think Indian Team Management would have woke up in the morning nd decided to play with the same XI... If not they should releved Pujara if not rahanne to play in India's major Dom final... His team needs his contribution desperately..."

8.45 am: A super-hard pitch with some moisture underneath on a sunny day in Dharamsala is ready for its first dig in international cricket. It is an early start here, so the ball may nip around early today. Field first pitch, reckons Paul Collingwood. Welcome to our coverage of the last ODI between India and England.

With the series decided, some experimentation is likely by the teams. As Suresh Raina said yesterday, India could come out with a new batting order today. He also said he wants to open cricket. I am not sure if we need to make any inferences out of that, but would be interesting if that happens. For England, Tim Bresnan is likely to sit out as he is not part of their limited-overs side for the upcoming tour of New Zealand.

What would be the call if both bails are dislodged by Mr. Finn in his delivery stride , the batsman then straight drives the ball, which contacts the bowler and goes on to hit the stumps finding the other batsman outside his crease. John: "England seem to have ended their woeful run of dropping easy catches that lasted their whole home summer and the first Test here. That said, while the chances they have put down today were all difficult, the ability to take such chances can often be the difference between two teams. India have pulled back from being at 79 for 5 in the 22nd over to a competitive 226 on a pitch that has something in it for both seamers and slower bowlers. Raina was the lynchpin of the batting..again.. as he scored an important half-century and revived the innings with a crucial partnership with Jadeja. But England kept chipping away with the wickets - Finn, Tredwell bowled excellent spells in which they were hard to hit and Bresnan ended the tour with a four-wicket spell. We will soon be back with England's chase.
