Rahul Dravid's retirement earlier this year has spared the current selection committee major headaches as they sit together to pick their last Test team before the end of their term. After the eight straight losses overseas, the demand for change and youth was natural, but the vacancy created by Dravid's retirement will allow them to pick three new batsmen for the New Zealand series without having to make a tough call. Tough calls will be left for the team management who will prune the 15 to 11 on the eve of the first Test, which begins on August 23.

Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir are likely to continue as the preferred openers, VVS Laxman is almost certain to retain his middle-order place, and Cheteshwar Pujara will be the only addition to the batting group that toured Australia. Rohit Sharma, who was the next man in should India have made changes in Australia, is likely to retain his Test slot despite a desperately disappointing limited-overs tour of Sri Lanka. The selection of the XI is some way off, but Pujara's return from injury and his mature knocks on tough West Indies pitches during the A tour might have pushed him ahead of Rohit and Ajinkya Rahane in the pecking order. As expected, Sachin Tendulkar will make his return to international cricket after he last played in the Asia Cup in March.

R Ashwin and Pragyan Ojha, who formed a successful spin duo in home Tests against West Indies last year, are likely to be backed up by Rahul Sharma in the reserves. Zaheer Khan and Umesh Yadav will be the two first-choice quicks. Ishant Sharma, recovering from an ankle injury, is not expected to pass fit, which means Ashok Dinda might find a place in the reserves.

Although the BCCI's release didn't say so, the selectors are also likely to discuss the squad for next month's World Twenty20. They might or might not make the announcement tomorrow, but this is likely to be a more complex discussion. For starters, they will have to take a call on the emotional favourite Yuvraj Singh's return after his recovery from a rare germ-cell cancer. Yuvraj has been training in Bangalore, but is yet to test his match fitness, so he remains a long shot if only because of the risk involved and the magnitude of the tournament.

There is room for discussing various combinations in the Twenty20 squad, especially in the bowling department. They could look at other T20 specialists, but the 15 who played in Sri Lanka start off as favourites for retention.

Likely Test squad: MS Dhoni (capt/wk), Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, VVS Laxman, Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, R Ashwin, Zaheer Khan, Umesh Yadav, Pragyan Ojha, Rahul Sharma, Ashok Dinda

Likely T20 squad: MS Dhoni (capt/wk), Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, Manoj Tiwary, Irfan Pathan, R Ashwin, Zaheer Khan, Umesh Yadav, Pragyan Ojha, Rahul Sharma, Ashok Dinda

Great news about Chet Pujara, class Test Batsman back in the side.

Future is looking very good with all the young guns coming together to SHOOT up to No 1 position in all forms of cricket.

I question you all how well you all played cricket or playing till now . R u all enough to judge a player potential or his talent likes rohit or vvs. The tremendous hard work has let them to be part of a Indian team , not like us. Selectors are not baised they know how to take the India team ahead.Just watch them and please donot compare their skills with other opponents. On a given day any team can perform and do well. lets hope that we again attain the no.1 ranking in test's and ODI's. We need to just praise and support these guys who ever plays in 11. Enjoy cricket .....

I really feel that Rohit Sharma does not deserve to be in the 15 Man squad for the tests against the blackcaps considering his recent run of pin code scores against Sri lanka

Posted by Rahul_Acharya on (August 10, 2012, 9:26 GMT)

After a year of bad performance, if a proven performer like Laxman's place is debatable, then Dhoni's place is also debatable. He can't hold on just for being a captain material. His performance in overseas test is below par.

Posted by   on (August 10, 2012, 9:09 GMT)

Why cant you give a chance for Irfan Pathan on the test squad ?

Posted by Naresh28 on (August 10, 2012, 9:06 GMT)

In tests overseas we need WICKET TAKING BOWLERS. India do great at ODI/T20 but in tests abroad we fail because we do not have good bowlers capable of taking 20 wickets. BCCI should invest in this aspect - we may have good bowlers out there in rural areas waiting to bowl their hearts out. 90% of the time we lose due to our bowling and when we win it is because the batsman have given us a good cushion.

Guyyyzz relax..... rain is desperately waiting for these matches. So who plays who doesn't. Hardly matters!!

Posted by GouthaKarun on (August 10, 2012, 9:00 GMT)

SACHIN TENDULKAR should retire from all forms of the game and give chance to youngsters, because now he is not playing for COUNTRY,he is playing for SPONSORS and BIG money purse .

Posted by   on (August 10, 2012, 8:55 GMT)

VJGS, please think TEST cricket. Raina got millions of chances. Rohit has not made his test debut yet!!! So how can you say Raina should get chances and no more for Rohit? Rohit has yet to get a single chance. He will play no worse than VVS in Indian conditions against NZ.

Posted by baghels.a on (August 10, 2012, 8:53 GMT)

Manoj Tiwary a fine ,solid 50 over player but not a T-20 batter by any strech of imagination.... U-19 world cup will be on and so will European Football ,wow !! i might be able to catch only highlights of the test series :(

Posted by   on (August 10, 2012, 8:53 GMT)

India is playing New Zeland that too without Vettori(who is basically half their side). Gimme a break; I will sleep through this series and hope when I wake up, India is playing someone other than SriLanka..

Posted by   on (August 10, 2012, 8:51 GMT)

Rahul Sharma, Ojha & Dinda??? What have these 3 done to deserve test selection? Ahead of Irfan Pathan, V Aaron, Pankaj Singh and R Jadeja? I hope Mr. Monga you are wrong. I hope VVS quickly announces that the first test will be his last, against a weak NZ attack on a placid domestic pitch, he can go on a high.

Posted by GouthaKarun on (August 10, 2012, 8:49 GMT)

Badrinath and Pujara are right choice for test cricket, both made tons of runs in first class cricket.Dhoni should retire from test and selectors give choice for VVS LAXMAN as CAPTAINSHIP,he is one of tht legends in TEST CRICKET HISTORY

Posted by GRVJPR on (August 10, 2012, 8:40 GMT)

Pujara really deserve a good go in test arena. He was very unlucky to get injured playing IPL match when he was in form. Also I think it is time for sachin the politician to quit

Posted by   on (August 10, 2012, 8:35 GMT)

Its the time for the selectors to include a greaceful exit for v.v.s. Laxman as its time for him to bid aduie to international cricket.Let's laud him for his stupendous contribution to indian cricket, a true match winner perhaps never given his due.

And whoever is selected they should be given a long run,but i defenitly agree that Rohit Sharma has been given ample opportunities,My 11 will include Virat Kohli,Chetaswar Pujara and Subramanian Badrinath along with sachin in the middle order.Let's prepare for the england and australia series.

Posted by   on (August 10, 2012, 8:32 GMT)

why don't select yuvraj for t20's.he will be play t20.that the warm up for yuvi for t20 worldcup

Posted by   on (August 10, 2012, 8:17 GMT)

Why not give chance to SUBRAMANIAM BADRINATH?? , he is highly experienced in domestic cricket ..

Posted by   on (August 10, 2012, 8:16 GMT)

Likely Test squad: MS Dhoni (capt/wk), Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, VVS Laxman, Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, R Ashwin, Zaheer Khan, Umesh Yadav, Pragyan Ojha, Harbhajan Singh & Praveen Kumar

Likely T20 squad: MS Dhoni (capt/wk), Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh, Ajinkya Rahane, Manoj Tiwary, Irfan Pathan, R Ashwin, Zaheer Khan, Umesh Yadav, Pragyan Ojha, Rahul, Harbhajan Singh & Praveen Kumar

yuvraj singh should be included in t20 squad

Posted by ramli on (August 10, 2012, 8:08 GMT)

Rohit?? Still in contention??? If selected, then Mohinder Amarnath can eat his own words (selectors as bunch of jokers) ... Laxman should be told to retire in grace after this series whatever be his performance ... it is time that the youngsters are given their long due ... thank you

Posted by   on (August 10, 2012, 8:05 GMT)

hey i cant see irfan patha in test ,whats happening to Indian selection, irfan is better then umesh and others quicks more overhe can bat

Posted by D.Sharma on (August 10, 2012, 8:04 GMT)

Man, this has finally hit me. Five months after announcing his retirement, only now do I fully realise I won't be seeing Rahul Dravid in at number three. Dravid's match winning and drawing abilities when the chips are down will sorely be missed. India's batting now consists of one match drawing specialist (Gambhir), two match winning specialists (VSS and Sehwag), two guys who have to prove themselves in tests (Kohli and Sharma/Pujara) and one match losing specialist (Statchin). The quicker we get rid of the match losing specialist, the better it is for Indian cricket.

Posted by CRICKETPOWER001 on (August 10, 2012, 7:58 GMT)

Why Munfa Patel and Praveen Kumar not in Twenty 20 Squad, Munf did good job in world cup in pressure situation, in IPL he have taken 19 wickets, at big stage he will be good bowler, Indian spin attack looks cool, batting is awesome, we need to strengthen bowling with experience in big games like world cup Twenty 20, i prefer to see Balaji also for Twenty 20... His slow bounce is difficult to play.

Posted by   on (August 10, 2012, 7:58 GMT)

Even they can rest Shewag & make Rahane to open the batting vth Gambir. My probables are Gambir, Rahane, Virat, SRT,Laxman,Dhoni, Rohit/Pujara,Ashwin, Ohja/Amit Mishra, Zaheer, U Yadav, Praveen/Varun (if he is fit)

Posted by visweswar.p on (August 10, 2012, 7:55 GMT)

Could selectors suggest sachin to retire from test format to give a chances to youngsters. Sachin also understand that its not his own team to play as long as he play, he is playing to nation and need to give the options to youngsters

Posted by SoverBerry2 on (August 10, 2012, 7:44 GMT)

Why not considering M. Kaif for test cricket as Kumble said? He has been consistent in domestic cricket (scored 537 runs in the last Ranji at an average of 59.66) and he continues to be a brilliant fielder as MSD would like.

31 is not old for playing test cricket and you can play for 6-7 years (2012-2019)! Look at Trott and Misbah, some older ones are good and we need someone with "cool head" after Dravid, VVS and Tendulkar.

Posted by nyc_missile on (August 10, 2012, 7:33 GMT)

People screaming about Rohit's selection, pipe down will ya! Sehwag,Laxman&Sachin continue despite the utterly pathetic last 3 tours overseas but they still pick on him, very unfair..irrespective of their form, the following..Rahane,Rohit,Pujara&Tiwari along with Kohli who's a certainty in all formats.. must be persisted with ESP on home conditions and not throw them into the deep end abroad. The 'seniors' anyway get cozy home conditions to bat into form..Sachin the MP should now give up cricket if he has any sense of guilt or concern for Indian cricket future and give a youngster the chance.Laxman must have been dropped by now and Sehwag who had disastrous returns in all the overseas tours in last 3 years could be pushed down in Tests just as a final throw of dice.Gambhir due to his combative&captaincy skills and just 2 rare overseas failures deserves patience.

Posted by praveen4honestremark on (August 10, 2012, 7:30 GMT)

Sachin, Laxman removed for Pujara and Rohit/ Raina. But no seniors now. They are first of all unfit to play. Not future prospect too. Kohli with single hundred in Australia gained confidence and that's hepling him a lot in ODI's too. So let's not waste time. This is best oppurtunity to remove Sachin, Laxman and play youngsters and this trend will lead to great team for 2015 WC too. Think a while selectors.

Posted by sohaibahmad on (August 10, 2012, 7:28 GMT)

I think Kaif has to be there. Laxman cant field for long and when he does, cant bend... great player but past him best no doubt, give Kaif a regular place for a period of time and see what he can do..

Posted by   on (August 10, 2012, 7:26 GMT)

Rohit sharma must be given a break............and irfan must be included becoz he is pretty good with both bat and ball these days

Posted by love_4_the_game on (August 10, 2012, 7:25 GMT)

my T 20 squad will be : 1)Virender Sehwag, 2) Gautam Gambhir, 3) Virat Kohli, 4) Yuvraj singh 5)Suresh Raina 6) MS Dhoni (capt/wk) 7)Sharma 8) Pathan 9) Ashwin 10)Khan 11) Umesh/ Dinda Reserves : Uthappa(wk), Tiwary, Umesh/ Dinda, Ojha

Posted by furkhanhaq on (August 10, 2012, 7:24 GMT)

The final 11 on the home pitches which assist the spinners must be : Shewag / Ghambir / Kholi / Sachin / Laxman / Dhoni / Irfan / Ashwin / Ojha / Zaheer / Amit Mishra. Three spinners are needed with Zaheer and Irfan sharing the new ball. The top 5 batsmen with dhoni can take care of the batting and put up a big score aganist NZ bowling attack with support from Irfan and Ashwin who can bat down the order. The 4 reserves can be Pujara / Umesh / Dinda / Rohit.

Posted by   on (August 10, 2012, 7:21 GMT)

I can't understand all these hype about Rohit Sharma's talent? Is it the style, the backlift , and the arc in which his bat moves? If so, what is the use ... if it doesn't produce evn half the results, some one like Kohli has achieved, though Kohli started late. Shiv Chanders' batting style may "look" the ugliest in contemporary cricket, but to me Chanders is several notches ahaed of Rohit, when it comes to talents!

Posted by Night_Fury on (August 10, 2012, 7:11 GMT)

Nothing can succeed if Indian players dont play. Cant understand why T20 world cup is arranged in SL. There grounds are pathetic and hopeless. T20 world cup or for that matter any world cup should only be scheduled in India, End, SA or AUS. I also think that these 4 countres should be Tier 1 countries playing each other more often. The rest can be tier 2 and can compete amoung themselves. This will improve level of cricket. Every one watches Eng-SA matches...just tell me who watches NZ-WI test match. I think only 3 team can compete with India, thats AUS, SA and ENG. And all those cribbing about Indian whitewash in England and Aus, pls also remember what happened to England and AUS when they tour us.

Posted by   on (August 10, 2012, 7:09 GMT)

in the likely squad i will prefer suresh raina in place of rohit sharma on the merit of current form.

Posted by   on (August 10, 2012, 7:09 GMT)

i think home conditions suit our batsmen so why picking old Seniors pick Rahane kohli and pujara and give them opportunity for this 2 test series and according to their performance they can be selected for future tours

Posted by cricket-is-best on (August 10, 2012, 7:06 GMT)

guys like sehwag and vvs..may be performing the fact that they hav been performing wonderfully from the start of their carrier even in abroad and in ALL CONDITIONS..THEY ARE IMPACT PLAYERS..a team suddenly without them wil seem weak.they should remain a bit more in the team.presently there are very few youngsters with that much calibre.

Posted by   on (August 10, 2012, 6:57 GMT)

This is absolutely crazy. Rohit Sharma in test squad? You can select a player in ODI format on the basis of a club cricket T20 tournament (IPL), then why cant you drop a player in Test team on the basis of a ODI series? No wonder, Indian Cricket is at its lowest point. Rohit Sharma is completely flawed at this moment.

Posted by   on (August 10, 2012, 6:53 GMT)

Rohit Sharma needs to go back to the nets and iron out his flaws, if he is included in the test team it would be a travesty of justice. Laxman needs to be in the team, don't forget he has been our crisis man for many a season. My team would be : Sehwag, Gambhir, Laxman, SRT, Kohli, Pujara/Raina, Dhoni, Ashwin, Zaheer,Pragyan Ojha,Umesh yadav.

Posted by love_4_the_game on (August 10, 2012, 6:49 GMT)

Rohit shud be given a break for a while, so that gets back his confidence playin domestic matches. In mean while its a high time we shud give a chance to Pujara inthe indian side. he has reasonably fared better than Rohit in India A team tour to west Inides.. Neglecting him it'll really hit back his confidence.and shud also laxman in the test series with ne young player for atleast a test match. Indian selectors shud also keep an eye on the other spinning options also. My best 15 for this series and starting 11 are 1)Sehwag 2) Gambhir 3) pujara 4) Sachin 5) laxman 6) Kohli 7) Dhoni 8) Ashwin 9) Zaheer Khan 10) Ojha 11) Umesh yadaw reserves will be Rahane , Tiwary, Rahul, (Ishanth/ varun) if fit / dinda.

I was so heartened to see Rohit Sharma on the list. It gave me hope that my grandma would also appear later in the list. Alas, grandma wasn't selected.

Posted by   on (August 10, 2012, 6:45 GMT)

kohli should bat at no 3 in test.pujara is a very talented batsman so he gets d no.5 postion.laxman should be retained at least for the first test which is taken place in his home ground.after that not rohit but badrinath should get the no.6 position.a terrific test batsman,he is waiting in the que for the last 12 years.just dont think off rohit right now,if not badri, think of rahane.

Posted by   on (August 10, 2012, 6:44 GMT)

if laxman selected he made 1 century definatlyy in home series.....then he pick again foreign tour his bad form why pick laxman...give chance youngster like rahane, middle order sachin is perfect....for yungster dravid got his retirment but laxman when retired??

selector took good team for future of Indian team..

Posted by John_Mil on (August 10, 2012, 6:40 GMT)

Likely...Why not Irfan Pathan included in Test , he is still Good in all format of the game compared to other Quicks. His economy, average and the wickets he has taken for the current season would be a proof. Why Rohit Sharma has been offered chances still.Give him Rest for sometime.Let him prove himself in Domestic series. If he is good enough to play then you could consider him..Dhoni..It's too much considering the out of form player always like Rohit and rejecting the inform player like Irfan. What's happening with the team management..Come on.Think about India when selecting player.Do not think about individuals.

Posted by Narbavi on (August 10, 2012, 6:37 GMT)

@ sachinisawesome: And now you are disrespecting Dravid by saying he is suited only for test cricket, he has had a faboulous one day career too, and unlike tendulkar, he has always been flexible to bat at any slot as per the team's needs, he has also done well in the ipl and in his only t20 intl match he hit 3 consecutive sixes!!

Posted by MasterClass on (August 10, 2012, 6:35 GMT)

Personally I can't wait for the time the seniors retire. India need to start re-building now, and keeping VVS around is so stupid.

Posted by gannyboy on (August 10, 2012, 6:30 GMT)

Want Irfan and Badrinath in the test squad and if the selectors want to select a leg spinner then please select Amit mishra instead of the useless Rahul sharma atleast AM spins the bowl and by the way what is harbhajan doing these days i dont even see him in television programs anymore.

India news Kaif should be considered for Tests - Kumble

July 14, 2012

A Test century at last for Mohammad Kaif, West Indies v India, 2nd Test, St Lucia, 2nd day, June 11, 2006 Mohammad Kaif scored his Test best in his last series © AFP

Mohammad Kaif, who last played for India in 2006, has found support from former captain Anil Kumble. Kaif, Kumble said, could add value to an Indian Test team that is without Rahul Dravid, and will only lose out on more experience once the other seniors retire.

"Kaif is only 31, and I believe this is the time when, as a batsman, you are nearing the peak of your powers," Kumble told Wisden India. "He has been consistent in domestic cricket, had a good last season, and he continues to be a brilliant fielder. As much as anything else, he has great attitude, so I don't see why they should not look at him at the Test level. I really am

Posted by   on (August 10, 2012, 6:21 GMT)

Its good for Rohit to not get picked as he is woefully out of form. He should play one year in Ranji to regain the lost confidence. I would not write off VVS as he is too good to be left out in the sub-continent. His runs, records and match-winning innings speaks volumes about his importance on the side. If selectors have other ideas such as grooming talent keeping future in mind, then tough decision, keeping interest of the team in mind, should be taken. If it means chopping VVS, then they should do so. My 11 will be like this sehwag/rahane, Gambhir, Pujara, Tendulkar, Kohli, Laxman, Dhoni, Ashwin, Ojha, Zaheer, Umesh. I hope this combination will win us all the upcoming crucial test series.

To be frank SRT would have been retired two or three years from all forms of the international cricket. If RD retired as he has better fitness that VVS and SRT they would have been retired as well to give a way to form a better team for the future. Pujara and Kohli can cement their place but for Rohit he is not a international material, he doesn't have any consistency. We need to select the people for the places like top order, middle order and all rounder and all not based on the scores they are scoring at Ranji level. Most of the cases the top order batsman scoring heavily and if we select based on this you will find four or five openers in the team and you won't find any middle order batsman who can hold the innings together.

@ravi kohli baap of dravid ,it takes years to establish greatness to reach a stature of dravid, Dravid faced quality bowlers like murali, warne , donald , walsh, ambrose , tell u what its a long list. Kohli only had to face malinga . tthe same was said about irfan pathan, people started comparing him with akram and Kapil Dev,. Kohli stil has to stil go a long way to prove that he is even as close as possible to dravid @Dravid Gravitus Sachin has had a bad outing but i am sure the very best in the business ull see that in the upcoming series. I pulled up details of several matches when sachin wasent present we lost in almost all occasions

Sad to miss Dravid the only gentleman left in the cricketing world. This NZ series is guaranteed to be tepid. Only thing to look forward to will be four consecutive ducks for Sachin Tendulkar which might possiblly make him think of retiring!!

Very sad to see a Text XI without Rahul Dravid. The best Indian #3 ever. But life should go on.Hope to see the Great man in some capacity assisting Indian Cricket. We will miss RD.Period. Given the resources available, I feel the Test XI is good, regarding the T20 selection, I feel that Robin Uthappa should be selected. He serves both as an impact player & reserve WK also. Rest of the team looks solid.

I don't think, SEHWAG's ability needs to be tested in ASIA. I feel sorry for PUJARA, as his place is more likely to be robbed by ROHIT. In ASIA, it is more likely the spinners are going to win the matches, so whoever the pacers it is not going to matter much.

Atlest Dravid should return to indian team as mentor for test cricket because he has played in all the pitches in the world ... his experience and knowledge should not go in waste

Posted by Nadeem1976 on (August 10, 2012, 5:57 GMT)

India should go for kill and play their most senior players in this series to win over NZ and get some confidence back. Test cricket is not for young players it's the experienced players game so go for kill with legends and no experiments just add one youngster. Too many youngster in test cricket are not going to add any value. Rohilt sharma is not scoring runs in internationals so he is waste of a player. Don't even pick him in the squad. He don't have temperament for internationals. This is the time for india to rule at home for next 2 years and get back #1 spot in test cricket. Youngster are not going to get India to #1 spot at all.

Rahul Dravid has done exceptionally well in his test carrier and comparing any current player with him is just not right because all youngsters are just emerging and have less experience. Indian will certainly gain success in the upcoming series because they have done well in SriLanka and will come out with flying colors.

@ I agree that rahul dravid is the best test batsman we had in last 15 years but pathetic tendulkar??? Are u out of you mind. He still can play all three formats (as he has won so many matches for mumbai indians as well playing 20-20)and Wall is suited for only test cricket. So please watch your mouth. I really respect The Wall and yes we are allowed to give our opinions here but don't disrespect the greatest batsman India has ever produced.

Sehwag, Gambhir, Virat, Sachin, Pujara, Dhoni, Ashwin, Ojha, Dinda/Rahul Sharma,Zaheer, Yadav. Keep Laxman out, ditto Rohit.

Even i was one who wanted Rohit to be removed. But after a thought i felt playing Rohit in tests is worth trying to bring his confidence and form back as he may get some runs then that's useful for him and team now and in future .. These are the reasons why i feel Rohit can be given chance: 1) ODI games where he failed was because of also rash shots and shots played to fetch runs as run rate is important in ODI's and you cannot waste too many balls there. In tests he can leave those balls which he doesn't want to play and also play leisurely. 2) But question arises, will he not fail with new ball bowlers of NZ who can swing and bowl fast?? Well may be. But chances are very low. In Indian pitches we don't expect too much swing and bounce , so for him at least it may become a positive point so he can get confidence back. Pitch in Hyderabad too is relaid for IPL and it's no more a bowling pitch. So no demons for Rohit to worry. This tour will be a last chance for Rohit to find his form.

Rohit deserves a test spot, just on the basis on one ODI series his test spot cant be denied. He has done much better in first class cricket than Raina & Tiwary perhaps not Pujara though. For test matches only first class cricket should considered and not ODI or T20. In his 5 years for India all players except him have played test matches, some a lot more than they deserve especially Raina in England and Murali Vijay. Viraat straight way walks in after his delightful show in Australia and Rahane will make it to the squad. The bowlers look a worry though. Not sure how about ashwin's class at Test level and Ojha shall be the second spinner. Irfan still has not done enough to assure a test berth, hopefully he can come through in the later part of the season. Will be very surprised if its not 2-0 to India. All the best guys 10 tset matches ahead this season at home, do well!!!

We are almost certain of winning this series. So when on earth we should play lakshman. If inculded, am sure he would perform well in india. But the problem is when overseas tests start after nz and eng tests. He will be a sure failure in fast bowling pitches and that has nothing to do with his ability to play in fast/bouncy pitches but his aging body and lack of reflexes were clearly on view in last years eng and aus tours. So better give opportunity to a youngster and get him ready for overseas tour by next year. Also there is no problem in including rohit sharma in test squad. He is a long term test prospect. don't consider his complete failure in SL. We have to respect first class performances. So he definitely deserves a go in test cricket. At the same time I feel sorry for badrinath for all his performances in frist class cricket he deserves more opportunities. For that reason also it is very important to exclude lakshman from this squad.

PK - Just stay away , yaa its first time we lost in that meNNer but what about u r team , even cant win in our own back yard IN SL , more over what about u r white washes in AUS 3-0 , 5-0 , ENG-3-1 , u r s is the team , the number of times shot out with in 100 scores , even in sl , so think of u r team no batsmen even capable of playing HERATH .

We need to oust the Mumbai cabal from the BCCI, giving another chance to Rohit Sharma is downright outrageous. Badri utilized the only proper opportunity he got to post a half century ..... He should be considered. Other than him, Manoj Tiwary, Virat Kohli need to be on the radar .... Of course Pujara should be in the playing XI & Very Very Super (but lately Sloppy) Laxman must be retained and should be batted @ No.3, a position that he's yearned for & rightly earned ....

Considering the upcoming tours, age factor and the bench strength its appropriate to bench Sachin and VVS. Let the team's agenda be the priority. Imagine, Even if these two veterans scores a century in their every outing, neither these is no significance for the team and its future, nor going to add weightage for their career as they done enough. It is as simple as that, these two are blocking a deserving kid's chance!

Openers viru and Gauti, pujara sachin vvs virat msd ashwin zaheer yadav ojha will make the final eleven. After one year, our test eleven should be in this batting order

viru gauti pujara kohli rohit rahane msd ashwin yadav ishant and another young legspinner. In seaming conditions we should have a potent fast bowler in place of the second spinner. Sachin and VVS to be phased out during the coming season.

I don't understand Indian team's obsession with Rohit. Test cricket is all about consistency and this guy is currently in a reverse zone. Let him sort out his problems in domestic cricket, let him learn how to be consistent and then give him a chance in Indian team. We have no dearth of talent and selecting him ahead of others is demoralizing for players like Rahane and Tiwary.

Bandrinath should be given a chance. He is technicaly correct & have patience to play test cricket. He will become Mr.Cricket of INDIA. Suresh Raina also should get a chance in home series. Rohit Sharma has talent. But at the moment he his out of form. So immediate test debut gives more burden for him. Rohit needs a break & come back. What happened to Sreeshanth, Munaf, RP Singh, Mithun & Unkant?

Posted by   on (August 10, 2012, 4:43 GMT)

6 batsman 5 bowler in the test team. There is not much problem to choose batsman shewag, Gambhir, Virat kohli, Sachin tendulkar, Suresh raina, Mahendra singh dhoni, Bowlers : R. ashwin, Irphan pathan, Harbhajan singh, Zaheer khan, umesh yadav. I hope selector chooses harbhajan singh because he can bat really well lower down the order and he can help buid partnership at the end. Irphan pathan and R. ashwin can also build a partnership lower down the order. Since 3 bowlers can bat well so India can choose only 6 batsman and make bowling look more stronger than what they did while traveling to Australia or England.

Posted by SouthPaw on (August 10, 2012, 4:41 GMT)

The following players should not be picked for these reasons: Rohit Sharma: "He is currently out of form" - what?? When was he in form? For you to be out of form, you have to have been in form at least once! SRT: Over the hill. His schedule is Wimbledon, Rajya Sabha, etc. I don't want to see this great man struggle. Unfortunately he doesn't have the self-respect that RSD has to retire gracefully. VVS: A has been. Even if he scores a few, he will leak many with his "fielding" Zaheer: Poor work ethic, lazy and now, injured to boot! Yuvraj/Bhajji: Poor work ethic, lazy, narcissistic & arrogant without substance.

Now the rest of the field is a decent lot and picking a team is easy!

Posted by   on (August 10, 2012, 4:40 GMT)

Ravi Darira You r absolutely spot on.......... Kohli is far superior.............Dravid was worthwhile only in tests but he was also found out there as he got bowled 7 times out of 8 under 30 in Aus ..........Bowlers had missed a trick during Dravid's career otherwise his career would have ended lot earlier............. bcz he was weak against balls aimed at his stumps that is why he had poor avg in Ind and Sl where bowlers target stumps more often than not

I cant believe what I am reading.Rohit Sharma is still being considered?Wow,Rohit must have done some great things in his past life coz in this life no matter how many times he fails, still he keeps getting picked and the worst part is the media still says he is the next big thing.Guess a decade down the line,at the age of 35 he would still be called,"the best young bastsmand around and the next big thing".What a farce!Shame on the selectors and the captain that mediocre and bits and pieces players like Rohit and Ravindra Jadeja keep getting picked time and again at the expense of other talented youngsters.

Posted by cricmypassion on (August 10, 2012, 4:22 GMT)

@Dravid_gravitas : I have read some of your more perceptive comments, but your tirade against Sachin is tiring. He wants to play and is entitled to do so, the onus to drop him is on the selectors. The fact is that we don't have a player who is a patch on Tendulkar, so lets rest that argument against him, Shall we? Yes, in your opinion, Dravid is the greatest, Sachin is selfish.. we have heard that before, well done, lets move on shall we? @xylo : I would worry about setting your house in order. Let the Indians worry about replacing non-performing Sachin and Laxman. @_PK - You got a point, we did lose 0-8, but all things considered, we are still favorites against NZ especially in India. Lets not lose our cool, shall we?

Most importantly, there is no necessity to play both sachin and laxman this series anyway. If laxman and selectors are thinking to be competitive and mouling their future team, bench laxman and sachin for the series and try Badrinath at 5 and Rohit at 6 (if they want to see how he fares in test cricket before they make a decision) and Stick with Pujara and Kohli for 3 and 4 for this series. If atleast 2 of them perform well enough, you could bring in Laxman and Sachin for england series where laxman might make a decision to continue further or not. If he chooses not to and retires, we have two guys with couple of tests experience to play against australia. Doesn't sound bad, does it? Better than guys debuting against australia.

Posted by Riderstorm on (August 10, 2012, 2:44 GMT)

Rohit sharma might be exceptionally talented. But, at this stage with him struggling to even score double digit scores, he is blocking the opportunities for players who may not be as talented as him but more hungrier for a single opportunity. I hope the selectors test out Pujara, Rahane and Kohli for the available two spots before they think of bringing in Rohit sharma.

Reg, the squad, i would love to see Virat at 3 and VVS at six.. Pujara at 5 would be the best lineup.. Viru, Gauti, Kohli, Tendulkar, Pujara, VVS, Dhoni, Ashwin, Zak, Umesh, Ojha.. All i worry is about the tracks prepared for the series.. Usually, NZ gets very flat tracks and they usually hold good and draw the tests here in India.. Dull draw tests are not good at all.. Better to have dustbowls and result oriented games rather than high scoring dull draws.. Wish the curators do make the pitch with sense..

Posted by satish619chandar on (August 10, 2012, 2:14 GMT)

Rohit Sharma is in bad form. Playing him in every game and if he fails there too, it will not do any good to his mindset.. Better he can be given some time off and blast against smaller attacks to gain some confidence..

Posted by __PK on (August 10, 2012, 2:12 GMT)

"...the magnitude of the tournament." Excuse me? From the country which lost 4-0 twice within a year? What colossal arrogance! A team with a record like that doesn't get to look down on ANY nation. I hope NZ humiliates you. You deserve it.

Posted by   on (August 10, 2012, 2:10 GMT)

I think Sachin and Laxman should retire from international cricket after the test series with New Zealand. The older you get, the slower your reflexes, especially against consistent fast bowling and I doubt those two can perform to their maximum potential consistently for more than a year. It's time for the Pujara, Rahane, Kohli and company to form the nucleus of the team.

Posted by __PK on (August 10, 2012, 2:08 GMT)

Whoever gets picked will make runs - lots of them - against NZ in India, which means you'll be stuck with them for the next series. So choose wisely.

If he had been scoring like VVS, of course the clamour for him to step down would have been justifiedl. Please lay off and let the selectors do their job. it is about time cricinfo stop publishing anti sachin remarks. They just want to hog the limelight by their sachin bashing statements. I am a Malaysian and do not condone such ungrateful remarks for the sake of cheap publicity.

I hope this is only a prediction from media. It is ridiculous to see the so-called legends of cricket playing against No.8 team, instead of giving chance to youngsters. In addition, considering Rohit for Tests is the height of abusurdity. I dont know who is lobbying for his place in the team, despite his utterly poor form.

My Team-XI: 1. Sehwag, 2. Gambhir, 3. Virat Kohli, 4. Pujara, 5. Suresh Raina, 6. M S Dhoni, 7. Irfan Pathan, 8. Ashwin, 9. Ojha/Rahul, 10. Zaheer Khan, 11. Umesh Yadav/Ashok

Posted by   on (August 10, 2012, 0:53 GMT)

I dont know what happened to selectors. once again they are making a mistake by considering Rohit Sharma. Instead if they go for Irfan Pathan, he can bat and he can bowl. He can work for us like Shane Watson for Aus, Angelo Mathews for SL. At present He is a very good allrounder and can score some 30 to 40 odd runs which rohit cannot score and waste in the field. If they announce Irfan in place of rohit its good.

I am asking a question from all Indians as a Lankan. August and September are quite wet months in India right? I never heard of cricket ever being played in India in these months ever before as a big time cricket follower. Really will we get rain free cricket in the coming weeks when Kiwis touch town in India? I would love to see uninterrupted cricket. Actually July and August are relatively dry months in Sri Lanka and that is why we usually invite teams to come to our shores.

its just ridiculous wen few people here actually want laxman not to be in team ..if someone needs to be dropped it must be sachin n no one else ... my x1 - sehwag ,gautam, kohli, pujara, laxman, dhoni, pathan, ashwin, ojha, zaheer, yadav

Posted by   on (August 10, 2012, 0:00 GMT)

The test squad proposed here is likely to bring another whitewash for India. VVS is 38 years old and his reflexes are slower. Ishant has played for over 6 months when he was a total failure in both oversseas series. Yadav lacks line and length and is very expensive. Ashwin is over-rated. Ojha is ineffective. Zaheer is out-of-form. Sehwag as an opener is reckless.

Rahane should open with Gambhir and Sehwag should come lower in the order, like one down or two down. Irfan should be included as he is in form. Time to drop VVS.

Posted by   on (August 9, 2012, 23:25 GMT)

Selectors missing the trick here by not pushing VVS out. He has done a great service for Indian cricket, but 2 years of home cricket provides a wonderful opportunity to groom in 2 new youngsters in the middle order

Heard of a kid called Kohli???? He already has 13 centuries and 13 man of the match awards batting at #3 in just 80 matches. Your Dravid did not have that many 100s or Man of the matches in his career.

So stop that nonsense. Kohli is baap of Dravid.

I think @Jasdeep Bindra is right. Literally. Jadeja definitely deserves a couple of chances. He's scored 314 in a first class innings and taken 9 5-wkt hauls + 2 10-wkt match figures. Moreover, we should be experimenting with every bowling asset we've got at the moment. The bowling lineup we have is really dismal. It's extremely hard to put out faith on the present bowlers. They simply appear incompetent. I don't think Indian bowling has really ever been on track since Kumble retired. AND YES! Pathan deserves a test return, more than anyone!

Best Test team for Sub continent with now available resources. 1. Sehwag 2. Gambhir 3. Pujara 4. Sachin 5. Laxman 6. Kohli 7. Dhoni 8. Aswin 9. Zaheer 10. Umesh 11. Ojha 12. Raina 13.Rahane 14. Dinda 15. Rahul Sharma

Rohit despite his poor technique is more worthwhile than Laxman on any day..........1) Laxman is totally unfit player who doesn't even work on his fitness hence Rohit will save about 20 runs more than laxman hence Laxamn score starts from -20 so if rohit scores 30 that is worth 50 of Laxman...........Further Rohit finds it difficult to maintain high S/R in ODI as he is naturally a laid back player whereas at 6 you need agressive hitter like Raina or Yuvi whereas at 3 & 4 you need player with potive strong Defence so He is not fit in ODI at any position but in Tests at No 6 he fits quite well bcz that is the easiest position to bat coz ball has gone old and bowlers have tired and there is no pressure of run rate.

Posted by bigdhonifan on (August 9, 2012, 19:51 GMT)

@tushcmi , Sreesanth is not fit. and Rahane is an opener.

Posted by F_Gomez on (August 9, 2012, 19:49 GMT)

why are they still picking Rohit Sharma????? he is such a waste of wicket. he could keep his wicket for more than 3 overs over the past year. he is not in good form, and i think he shouldn't be picked over Pujara for the tests. Pujara has shown that he can cope with pressure, and is able to put a sizeable amount of runs on the board. if i were in the selection comittee, i wouldn't pick Rohit Sharma.

Posted by ROXSPORT on (August 9, 2012, 19:16 GMT)

Nohit Sharma, aka Rohit BeSharma, does not deserve any more chances. He should be dropped once & for all. It is no use having talent if you do not have the temperament (which Nohit BeSharma has amply proven by now). If talent alone is the criterion, yhen Sreesanth should be the first bowler in the squad. The wicket-keeper's slot should go to Dinesh Karthick & the spinner's position should go to Piyush Chawla.

I am a huge fan of V Kambli, the cricketer.. I just wish he got atleast half-the chances as Rohit is getting.

Posted by ImpressiveTeer on (August 9, 2012, 19:09 GMT)

I don't like Rohit either, but we must realize that kohli wen't through the same in Australia.. If Dhoni didn't persist with him in the 4th test, we probably would never have seen Kohli of today. If Rohit can get his confidence back via a test match, it can only be good for India. May be Rohit should be included in dead-rubber matches first and let others waiting in line for so long get a chance ahead of him.

To all those people who are going crazy about some people being there and some being left out...This is a probable line up....Not the actual one... :|

my test team... 1. Gambhir 2. Sehwag 3. Pujara / Rahane 4. Sachin 5. laxman 6. Rohit 7. Dhoni 8. Ashwin 9. Zaheer 10. Pragyan 11. Sreeshant.. 12. Ishant (if fit) / Umesh / for subcontinent...

for overseas drop pragyan.. get Irfan back... in overseas Irfab will be good option for 3rd seam bowler.. nd with irfan batting at 8.. opposition has 2 work bit harder....

My T-20 team.. 1. Sehwag 2. Gambhir 3. Kohli 4.Yuvraj 5.Dhoni 6.Raina 7.Irfan 8.Ashwin 9.Zaheer 10. Praveen 11.Prgyan

if yuvraj not fit.. bring yusuf to open with sehwag nd gambhir one down nd then follow the order

My ODI team

1. Sehwag 2. Sachin 3.Gambhir 4. Kohli 5. Yuvraj 6. Dhoni 7. Raina 8. Irfan 9.Ashwin 10. Zak 11. Praveen (in subcontinet)

in SUbcontinet this bolwing attck is good enough.. need 2 strengthen batting. but oversea we need 5 bowler.. with yuvraj as part timer there

1. Sehwag 2. Sachin 3. Gambhir 4.Kohli 5. Yuvraj 6.Dhoni 7.Irfan 8.Ashwin 9.Praveen 10.Zak 11. Munaf/Umesh/Dinda

Posted by Sadique.. on (August 9, 2012, 18:49 GMT)

I think Mohammad Kaif need to be consider. He is doing good in the test format. I don't know why BCCI is ignoring him even though he is most suitable player in the middle order..

Posted by US_Indian on (August 9, 2012, 18:47 GMT)

Again it is a screwed up selection- again going by the various comments and my own analysis. Noway for Nohit-Rohit atleast for now he should go back to his basics. Zak should only focus on Tests. There should be Rahane, Mukund, Rayudu, Uthappa either in tests or ODI's and even include Suryakumar Yadav. Kaif and Badri for tests (if they realy want to phase out SRT, VVS, Sehwag over a period of time and also Gambhir, Dhoni have also hit the 30 years mark so in 3-4 years they need to be phased out as well so the management better start planning accordingly and not repeat the same mistake as they did when the fab4 were there) As far as bowling Irfan should play all formats, Umesh just tests, Munaf for ODI's or may be a one off test, I am not yet sure about Dinda, You can bring in Awana or Shami in contention to groom them for the future and no more RP or Vinay or may be Praveen for ODI and let Aaron learn his trade for a year or two and Ishant a definite no no for the time being.

Posted by Paras.Rishi on (August 9, 2012, 18:41 GMT)

Irfan Pathan should be rewarded for his good form. Also, selectors should care to reward India A tour star bowlers, I very well remember our bowlers had put up fabulous performances throughout the tournament. I don't see any point in playing Zak against World no 8 team that too at home! I accept that I was a Rohit Sharma fan, but right now he really needs to gear up for the upcoming Ranji Season for Mumbai and not New Zeeland series or T20 World Cup!

Posted by Paras.Rishi on (August 9, 2012, 18:34 GMT)

Yuvraj Singh now declared fit should be given a chance in this home series, he needs some highly competitive cricket exposure after such a long break due to cancer. Playing him directly in the World Cup might turn out to be a tricky decision! That's my opinion, I'm sure my fellow Indian fans some better ones too.

Posted by   on (August 9, 2012, 18:31 GMT)

People say that Rohit is a talented bloke and a classy player, which is the reason why he should be kept around. But with all due respect, my maid can hit more classy shots with her broom stick than Rohit if given a chance...

Posted by   on (August 9, 2012, 18:22 GMT)

Still chances of Rohit Sharma?????????This is really ridiculous if he gets selected in the team leaving talented batsman like Raina...!!!!

Posted by   on (August 9, 2012, 18:17 GMT)

Rohit Sharma is the most talented player on Earth...He is a living legend...He should be given another 500 chances to prove that he is a great player...Others can wait...they are all club class, not so talented, gully cricket players...Nonsense

why is laxman in..??he doesnt deserve a spot...he played bad in eng & oz..

Posted by   on (August 9, 2012, 18:11 GMT)

In test India should plan to play 4 bowler + 1 all rounder and Irfan should bat at no 7.

Posted by   on (August 9, 2012, 18:09 GMT)

best part of article, selectors making there last selection before there term is over...Thank God, once again they make horrible selections, why are you going with sehwag still? why Rohit over raina? and why is irfan pathan not in there, if you have openers as sehwag and gambir you dont need a reserve, put irfan pathan in there.

Posted by   on (August 9, 2012, 18:09 GMT)

drop rohit sharma, and pick irfan pathan over ashok dinda

Posted by akashchandran on (August 9, 2012, 18:06 GMT)

If selectors are sane, they will not drop Rohit Sharma after having picked him in the Test squad based on great Ranji Trophy performances, without giving any opportunity to make his debut, just because he failed in some unimportant ODI matches. Remember he had scored a 94 in the only Test in which we won in the WI in June. Pujara lost his Test place mainly because of injury. Now he is fit and proved form in the WI. He should also be in the squad. If one more batsman is picked it should be from Rahane, Badrinath and Tiwary - Rahane has an edge since he can also fill the opener's slot. Raina should be sent with the India A team abroad to test if there is any improvement in his Test match skills.

Posted by sunaju on (August 9, 2012, 18:00 GMT)

why rohit sharma....why not BCCI choose me...instead of rohit...i am better than rohit....

Posted by Dashgar on (August 9, 2012, 18:00 GMT)

A lot of pressure on Kohli and Gambhir here to carry the geriatrics through. Not sure what the selectors think they'll get from Laxman, Sachin is clearly close to the end and Sehwag is past his best. Lucky for them New Zealand are in even worse shape so the problems won't be as glaring. Hope it's a competitive series. Test cricket doesn't need a blow out either way.

I don't think much of Ashok Dinda. He doesn't merit a place in any of the Indian sides.

Posted by   on (August 9, 2012, 17:55 GMT)

If I was on the selection panel, I'd be brave and take a real gamble and pick Irfan Pathan, and drop Rohit Sharma, since our current Test team is full of batsmen, and we are in serious need of an all-rounder. I would like to see how well Irfan Pathan does on a comeback to Test cricket, and I would want Rohit Sharma to feel hurt about his dismal performances over the last few months, so he will come back stronger. My feeling is that, the selectors have a long-term plan for Rohit Sharma and are persevering with him even though he is not doing so well at the moment. If Rohit Sharma was playing for another country, I'm sure the selection panel there would have been more ruthless and merciless towards him.

Posted by   on (August 9, 2012, 17:52 GMT)

We're s badrinath..For me he z our Mike Hussey I believe more people will accept me he scored tons of runs for State team he perform far to well in IPL.If they can give as many as chances to Rohit y can't Badri..who got minimal chances. All says chika Is so biased on TN players but that doesnt look the case here.Mike hussey started his carrier at 31 hope the same for Badri I vl be shocked if baddies don't make it..

Posted by jay_vkjay on (August 9, 2012, 17:51 GMT)

Why don't you even mention Irfan's comeback to the side? I rate Irfan Pathan (brought back his SWING) as second best bowler in India behind Zak. I don't support Rohit being retained in the test squad. My pick of test squad is: GAMBHIR, SEHWAG, KOHLI, SACHIN, LAXMAN, PUJARA, DHONI, RAHANE, ASHWIN, OJHA, IRFAN, ZAHEER, YADAV, PRAVEEN KUMAR AND MANOJ TIWARY. Also don't try Laxman at no.3. Virat Kohli should bat at no.3. Because Laxman proved that he can bat with tail effectively.

Posted by maddinson on (August 9, 2012, 17:46 GMT)

What is Laxman waiting for? To retire after getting bowled 7 times in 6 innings?

Posted by   on (August 9, 2012, 17:45 GMT)

This is the best chance for the selectors to pick a replacement of Laxman. Possible candidates are: Pujara, Rahane, Rohit, Manoj Tiwary, Mukund and Badrinath. Badrinath & Mukund deserve more chances to prove their credentials as the test batsman.

Posted by Azweer on (August 9, 2012, 17:44 GMT)

Suresh Raina is in a prime form waiting to get into Test XI, Apart from Pujara, Badrinath & Kaif are there to add experience, just like what Misbah did for Pakistan in his late 30's... Rohit shud be rested. he needs a break and let him go back to his yards to re-invent his form. even Mukund is valuable to make Strong opening batting order. In bowling dept,Irfan can make a come back. but that shud nt add up the work load for him.. Zak can rebuild his bowling aftr poor outing in SL. Umesh had lots of chances in ODI's. but i hope he is good in Longer version. Instead of Dinda, There shud be any other surprise newest addition into the dressing room. as anyhow the newcomer s going to wipe the bench for few series. this series can bring another bench warmer for future prospect...

Posted by   on (August 9, 2012, 17:33 GMT)

Gud but Irfan pathan should be tried in tests to see for the swing which he got wwith the White ball.. can he again deliver the the Red ball

Posted by   on (August 9, 2012, 17:28 GMT)

I understand and recognize the need to drop Rohit for failures, 2 series in a row. However, unlike VVS Lakshman who has had 8 consecutive failures, at least Rohit's fielding is a positive for the team. Under the circumstances, if the selectors choose to retain good-for-nothing Lakshman, they have no moral right to drop Rohit. They can of course, supported by the South Zone media find some good excuses to retain Good-For-Nothing Lakshman for a series, replace him with Murali / Badri & thereby, retain the South Zone quota which would otherwise go to Pujara / Rohit / Manoj.

Posted by   on (August 9, 2012, 17:28 GMT)

People are actually calling for Raina and Jadeja in the test squad! Lol.. Rahul Sharma's selection in the Tests with a bowling average of 40+ in FC cricket is strong proof of nepotism in the selection process.. Give Rahane and Pujara a chance.. they are India's Test future..

Posted by   on (August 9, 2012, 17:27 GMT)

Since Wimbledon & Olympics would be over, I (everyone else) knew that Tendulkar will be back! If BCCI desperately want Tendulakar to play in any international series, don't schedule it during Wimbledon! I also agree with Mr Rizvi. Even test sides can benefit a lot from an allrounder. Hope they pick & encourage Irfan

Posted by   on (August 9, 2012, 17:26 GMT)

Pujara might be a good selection.Hope Irfan makes a comeback in Test Cricket.

Posted by palla.avinash on (August 9, 2012, 17:25 GMT)

It is time to look at the future of Indian test team and time to send laxman even though it is hard.Best playing 11 Sehwag/rahane,gambir,pujara,sachin,kohli,manoj tiwary, dhoni, ashwin, ojha, umesh yadav rest others should dinda, rahul sharma/amit is time to leave rohit sharma as he needs to find consistency and do more hard work and change his attitude droping from team will help him to know the value of place in indian team, raina can be given chances later when he score runs consistently in 3 or 4 series he also need to improve his technique and should looking giving chances to pacers like dhawal kulkarni, shami ahmed, abu nachim, pradeep awana and also look at spinners like Nadeem and K Gautam. All the best India and selectors india's test future is in your hands.

Also, a chance should given to Suresh Raina for a home series. Still he is young. After a long failure Rohit get in to the test matches, it give more pressure to him.He has to get his confidence back before get into the international matches. What happened to Sreeshanth, Munaf, RP sINGH, Mithun?

Rohit - the new Jadeja ;)

Irfan is the man India is/was missing for so long. But not sure if he is test fit/interested. Ofcourse, he certainly needs to up his bowling (especially in subcontinent) in tests but better than Dinda any day!

Posted by   on (August 9, 2012, 17:17 GMT)

rohit ??? hmm... the way rohit is a favorite to all... he must go for state election. he will definately win. on any day i will prefer a bowler as a batsman over him.

Mr. Monga.. your likely team selection is a farce one.. indeed you looked greatly influenced by the superior form of Rohit Sharma.. He deserved to be in the state level championships to hone his skills again. no doubt he is an able bat but we need performers.. and he is in sorry form. . for a long long time..... great bit of Support he had in the selection committee . but for how long...????

Posted by   on (August 9, 2012, 17:12 GMT)

Why Irfan Pathan is not in squad? He is a swing bowler and in good form.Another time Rohit is getting chances. Why?I think he will fail again and will create pressure for other batsman.

Yes, i would consider Badrinath and Pujara as the new batsmen for our test squad!! Badrinath deserves it, if Rohit is selected ahead of Badri, then its just a disgrace!!

Posted by xylo on (August 9, 2012, 17:05 GMT)

Dravid's retirement relieved the selectors of headache? He might have failed in Australia as per his standards, but lets not forget that he was the lone shining star in the tour of England. The selectors' headache should be that non-performing seniors in the name of Sachin and VVS in that order are still demanding to be in the Test XI.

Posted by   on (August 9, 2012, 16:58 GMT)

Subramaniam Badrinath would be a perfect choice for No.3 Spot.

Posted by KannanSR on (August 9, 2012, 16:56 GMT)

Why Rohit Sharma?Definitely he would have made a record off the field by having more critics than supporters.Robin Utthappa OR Yuvraj Singh are better players. The number of dismal performances by Rohit Sharma definitely raises eyebrows and who is really backing him.BCCI raise above.

Posted by   on (August 9, 2012, 16:49 GMT)

When Sehwag and Gambhir are around keeping Rahane as reserve is not worthy enough. They should think about Yusuf or Ravindra Jadeja for balance in the team. As a reserve keeper Rayudu can be considered. In T20 cricket street smart bowler like Praveen Kumar should not be ignored. Rohit has been given fair run of two consecutive failed series so he can be rested.

Posted by alphonsesiddharth on (August 9, 2012, 16:48 GMT)

Seriously dont have any idea why selectors keep ignoring Badrinath. poor feelow, what wrong did he do apart from performing consistenly? he is 31 ok but still can play for another 4 yrs!

Posted by QingdaoXI on (August 9, 2012, 16:47 GMT)

Sorry But t-20 squad should be Dhoni, Sehwag, Gambhir, Uttappa, Raina, Kohli.Yuvraj (If not fit than Rayudu), Irfan, Yusuf, Ashwin, Dinda, Zaheer, Praveen, Rahul, Rohit/Tiwary. But i know what selctors will do if yuvraj is unfit they will select jadeja and drop ojha. Yuvraj and Irfan are neccessary for India in playing XI, if yuvraj is found unfit than yusuf should replace him, he will be useful in this conditions. Our bowling looks weak Zaheer, umesh and aaron are erattic in t-20s, Praveen is the same which he was before, Munaf sometimes ok, Vinay, mithun and aarvinda are not interantional calss bowlers and ishant and srresanth should never think beyond tests. One good thing is that Awana was very good in IPL,he should e taken as a surprise package, he will definately do better.

Posted by BetterReading on (August 9, 2012, 16:47 GMT)

Raina and Irfan are in great form. They should be in the Test squad also. Rohit Sharma should be excluded from both the squads. This test squad should be be a foundation for the future. Rohit is already tested and he has failed miserably.

as far as i m concern there is a need of an allrounder in the test Irfan must get a chance ahead of Dinda.. umesh is obvious choice because he is nippy and quick.. in batting order Pujara is much suited far Indian conditions, with all due respect Mr. Rohit lost his place in Indian 15...spin department have varity and freshness but miss Bhajji due to his ample experience. Last but not he least WELCOME GOD!!!!

I hope Suresh Raina makes the cut into the Test squad instead of Rohit Sharma. Just how many chances will he given? Raina is in form and is improving and most importantly, he is keen on building a Test career and has the thirst to do well in that area. In the sub-continent he is an immense batting talent.

Posted by Narbavi on (August 9, 2012, 16:15 GMT)

Rohit Sharma again?? Hope it doesn't happen, i would either play pujara at no.6 or make dhoni bat at 6 and bring in irfan in to the team at no.7, and as for the t20 squad is concerned,i believe we need a back up keeper in the form of Uthappa and then the erratic umesh should be replaced with Praveen kumar!!
