Pakistan in India ODI Series - 1st ODI

India v Pakistan

Pakistan won by 6 wickets (with 11 balls remaining)

The players are on the field. Gambhir will take strike against Mo Irfan. Two slips in place.
Mohan: "Sharjah 1998: Sachin plays a copybook straight drive for a six and Tony Greig says 'Straight down the ground, wonderful shot, all the way for a six, whatta playa'! Its sad that we wont get to either watch Sachin bat in an ODI again or Tony Greig providing with his sensational commentary! As Tony says, 'Its all over!'"

Tamoor: "With Gautam opening the innings, Hafeez might open the bowling as he's been a 'terminator' for the lefties recently. "

Toss: Pakistan have won the toss and they will bowl first. Azhar Ali, Younis Khan, Junaid Khan, Mohammad Irfan all in the team, Umar Akmal misses out and is replaced by Shoaib Malik. For India, Sehwag comes in to replace Ajinkya Rahane in the XI that played in Ahmedabad two days ago. MS Dhoni says, "I am not too sure about the new rules." India have relied on their part-timers in the recent times, but with five fielders inside the ring all the time, that strategy might be tested. Here are the new ODI rules. Sohaib quips, "Apart from Dhoni and Gambhir every bowler can go for runs."

The TV graphic that shows the teams would be ideal for a barber's shop - it has 22 different hair styles. I am sure Sehwag's wouldn't be a popular pick.

Vish:"I remember that match for Dravid's great reply. There was a point we needed about 100 odd runs at about 7 RPO. Jadeja and Robin Singh were the big hopes. WIll never know why Jadeja aired three easy chances...two of them prompty put down, and then he finally managed to get out on third attempt."

Nikhil: "So only Shahid Afridi, from both teams has played an India Pak match at Chennai before." Afridi is a timeless wonder Nikhil. But there is another guy who is still around playing cricket - Azhar Mahmood as Gav pointed out.

Back on the topic of India v Pak in Chennai, Stille adds: "Tendulkar took that wicket other wise that was surely 1st 200 in ODI." That was the last ODI Pakistan played in Chennai, but they played another match here - in 1999 - a thriller which was later lit up by the warmth of the crowd. Ramprasad was there: "I was there when Anwar hit those 'rain of sixes"... unforgettable! One good thing is that everyone of us around took it very sportively... that's the spirit of MAC!"

Anees: "Yes. I remember that innings by Saeed Anwar like it was just yesterday. Had just finished my exam the same morning and what first entertainment it was in the afternoon. "

Bilal: "It was a chance-less innings by Saeed Anwar. The only chance he gave took his wicket away. It was a half chance, Ganguly converted it into a full chance. " Yes Bilal, I remember how easily Anwar hit Kumble out of the attack that day - smacked him for big sixes as easily as only he could have done.

8.50 am: Right, so the big news is that the toss will be at 9.30 am and the play will start at 10 am with no reduction in overs.

While we wait to hear from the ground, how many of you remember this - Once upon a time in Chennai?

The umpires are already in the middle and we will get the news about the start time soon but Gowri from Chennai has some encouraging words - "From the looks of it and my experience here in these 7 years, its not gonna rain again but might get few drizzles later."

The match will be played under the new ODI rules which allow two bouncers and over among other things. That won't make a difference to how Mohammad Irfan bowls (if he plays this match, that is) - he got the ball to bounce off the length appreciably in the two T20 matches.

8.35 am: There will be an inspection of the pitch in ten minutes and we will know of the start time soon. The big yellow stands in Chennai which were not being used till recently have been opened.

Pitch report: It has been raining in Chennai last few days, so there is bound to be moisture in the surface. On top of that, it is an early morning start. The TV commentators say it's a win-toss-bowl-first pitch.

8.15 am: Good Morning all and welcome to ESPNcricinfo's coverage. After two cracking Twenty20s, the teams are ready for a dose of ODI cricket. We are 45 mins away from the start of the match and the good news from Chennai is that the rain is not around at the moment. We also have some known names joining in the squads - Misbah is back, so is Younis Khan. For India, Virender Sehwag is back too. Meanwhile, here is Kanishkaa's preview of the match.

Dhoni gets a standing ovation from the crowd. Even Pakistan players are walking up to him to congratulate him on what has been a great innings in severely testing conditions. India had slipped to 29 for 5 against some incisive Pakistan bowling, and Dhoni, first with Raina and then with Ashwin, constructed two contrasting partnerships to pull India to a respectable score. Junaid Khan was brilliant for his four wickets and so was Mohammad Hafeez during the middle of the innings. But in the end, Dhoni, dropped by Misbah when he was on 16, fought the sapping weather to take India past 200. We will be back with Pakistan's reply soon.

Mack: "Dhoni - today wearing Jersey No. 7, playing at 7th position, finishes 7000 ODI runs and becomes a 7th indian batsman to do so. (And also making 100 runs partnership for 7th wicket). What 7nastic day for him." and also 7 fours as pointed out by Hari. No wonder for someone born on 7th of July. When was Chris Martin born?

"Only thing left is Dhoni take 7 catches/stumping. Or even more astonishingly, 7 wickets!" says Bilal

Aftab: "Pakistan smashed India. But couldnt get past the Chennai Super Kings. India 29/5 - CSK 198/1."
